GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019MUNCIE, Ind. Caleb Huntley ran for three touchdowns and Ball State scored 27 points in the second half to beat Miami (Ohio) 41-27 on Friday. Miami (7-5, 6-2), which had its five-game win streak snapped, entered having already clinched the Mid-American Conference East Division title. The RedHawks will face Central Michigan in the conference championship on Dec. 7 at Ford Field in Detroit. Ball State (5-7, 4-4) concludes its season by snapping a four-game losing streak. The RedHawks built a 27-14 halftime lead, but Ball State's Drew Plitt threw a pair of 40-yard touchdown passes to Yo'Heinz Tyler. Huntley, who scored on a 3-yard run in the first quarter, added 5- and 30-yard touchdown runs in the fourth quarter. Huntley had 134 yards rushing on 24 carries. Plitt also threw a 7-yard TD pass to Justin Hall in the second quarter and finished 26-of-40 passing for 317 yards. Jaylon Bester ran for a 16-yard touchdown for Miami. Brett Gabbert added a 10-yard touchdown pass to Jack Sorenson and Lonnie Phelps ran 32 yards into the end zone off a blocked punt in the second quarter.

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019BUFFALO, N. Y. Sophomore Jaret Patterson rushed for a school-record 298 yards and a Mid-American Conference-record six touchdowns and Buffalo cruised to a 49-7 victory over Bowling Green on Friday. Patterson set the single-season rushing record for the Bulls (7-5, 5-3 MAC) with 1,626 yards, passing Branden Oliver's 1,535 yards set in 2013. Patterson also broke Buffalo's single-game rushing record, topping Jordan Johnson's 282-yard effort against Akron in 2016. Patterson raced 81 yards for a TD on his first carry and added scoring runs of 35, 30, 9, 1 and 1 yards. He had 272 yards on the ground with five TDs in the first half. Kevin Marks added 107 yards and a TD on 14 carries, giving him 1,008 yards rushing on the season and marking the first time Buffalo has had two running backs top 1,000 yards in a single season. Davon Jones rushed for 89 yards and a touchdown for the Falcons (3-9, 2-6). Buffalo had already qualified for its third straight bowl game and the fifth in school history. Bowling Green leads the all-time series 11-6.

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019YPSILANTI, Mich. Xavier Williams, Dustin Crum and Will Matthews combined to rush for 204 yards and three touchdowns and Kent State held off Eastern Michigan 34-26 on Friday. Williams ran for 79 yards and a TD on 12 carries, Matthews totaled 74 yards on 14 totes, while Crum had 13 carries for 51 yards and two scores for the Golden Flashes (6-6, 5-3 Mid-American Conference). Crum also completed 17 of 23 passes for 197 yards. Kent State took a 24-14 lead into halftime and the Golden Flashes quickly made it a 17-point advantage when Jamal Parker returned the opening kickoff of the second half 96 yards for a score. Mike Glass III finished 29-of-37 passing for 386 yards and three touchdowns, but he also threw two interceptions. Glass connected with Line Latu for a 30-yard score in the third quarter and hit Bryson Cannon for a 6-yard TD midway through the fourth quarter to get the Eagles (6-6, 3-5) within 31-26. Arthur Jackson III had four catches for 129 yards for Eastern Michigan, while Latu caught nine passes for 108 yards. Matthew Trickett added a 24-yard field goal for Kent State with 1:27 left to play to cap the scoring. The Eagles totaled 509 yards of offense, while Kent State finished with 450.

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019AUSTIN, Texas Sam Ehlinger passed for two touchdowns and ran for another to lead Texas to a 49-24 win over Texas Tech on Friday, guaranteeing the Longhorns will at least finish a disappointing season with a winning record. Texas fell behind 14-0 in the first quarter before Ehlinger and the Longhorns came roaring back. Ehlinger scored his first rushing touchdown in five games, and later connected on scoring strikes of 75 yards to Devin Duvernay and 26 yards to Jake Smith. Ehlinger finished with 348 yards passing and ran for 83 yards on 10 carries. Roschon Johnson added 105 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Texas (7-5, 5-4 Big 12) started the season ranked in the Top 10 after last season's Sugar Bowl victory, but stumbled badly over the second half of coach Tom Herman's third season. A loss Friday would have meant Texas had to win its bowl game to have a winning season. Texas avoided that kind of pressure thanks to Ehlinger and the Longhorns offense playing their best football since early October. Texas Tech (4-8, 2-7) jumped out early with two quick touchdown drives as quarterback Jett Duffey was carving up the Longhorns defense. But the Red Raiders also had three drives end on downs deep in Texas territory as Texas Tech's first-year coach Matt Wells chased an upset win to end the season. Duffey passed for 398 yards. THE TAKEAWAYTexas Tech: The Red Raiders were already suspect on defense and badly missed linebacker Jordyn Brooks, their leading tackler. Brooks is a finalist for Butkus Award given to the nation's best linebacker and he was a pregame scratch from the lineup. His absence was most notable every time Ehlinger took off running up the middle of the field. Texas: After a four-game slump, the Longhorns played the kind of offense that was on display at the beginning of the season when they started 5-2. Ehlinger passed for more than 300 yards for the fourth time this season and Duvernay topped 100 yards receiving for the sixth time. Texas hadn't scored more than 27 points the previous four games and had 28 by halftime against the Red Raiders. UP NEXTTexas Tech: The Red Raiders' season is concluded. Texas: The Longhorns await their bowl destination. ---More college football: https://apnews. com/Collegefootball and https://twitter. com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 25, 2019The championship of the Atlantic Coast Conference's Coastal Division all comes down to an in-state rivalry game. And No. 23 Virginia Tech knows it can claim the division for the seventh time by simply keeping its winning streak alive. The Hokies (8-3, 5-2) have won every meeting against the Virginia Cavaliers -- their hated upstate foe -- since joining the ACC in 2004. That's 15 up, 15 down in a series whose matchup is circled on the state's collective calendar each fall. Virginia Tech travels northeast to Charlottesville to face Virginia (8-3, 5-2) on Friday afternoon at Scott Stadium, with the winner earning a chance to face undefeated No. 3 Clemson in the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 7 in Charlotte, N. C. The Hokies' resounding 28-0 win over Pittsburgh last Saturday set up the winner-take-all scenario. A forceful defensive performance held the Panthers to just 177 total yards -- a minuscule 60 on 27 rushing attempts. The shutout showing was the second in two weeks -- they blanked Georgia Tech 45-0 in Atlanta -- and the defense has allowed just 17 points in its last three games, including a 36-17 victory over high-scoring Wake Forest. The defense has held the opposition scoreless on 32 consecutive possessions since the third quarter of the Nov. 9 win over the Demon Deacons. Virginia Tech's turnaround after an embarrassing 45-10 home loss to Duke on Sept. 27 has been striking. With a national audience watching on a Friday night, the Blue Devils pulled out all the stops and scored on a trick play right before halftime to cap a 91-yard scoring drive for a 21-3 halftime lead. The loss, which left the Hokies 0-2 in the ACC, was their worst at home since a 49-12 defeat against Houston on Sept. 28, 1974, and coach Justin Fuente said his squad was not ready to compete on Duke's level. But all that has changed after winning six of the last seven, dropping only a 21-20 decision in the last minute at Notre Dame. "They're a special group of young men," Fuente said after beating Pittsburgh. "They've been through special circumstances and stuck together. So my feelings toward them haven't changed because they're winning games now. " Virginia Tech is 3-3 in the ACC's title game, while Virginia has never reached the championship contest. Cavaliers coach Bronco Mendenhall immediately started focusing on the Hokies after his team defeated Liberty 55-27 on Saturday. The fourth-year Virginia coach showered praise on the Virginia Tech program that former coach Frank Beamer built and Fuente has maintained -- which has its foundation based in defensive coordinator Bud Foster's 25 years of stopping opposing offenses. "We're talking now about an opponent that has qualified for (27) straight bowl games and has made a commitment to football that has lasted for a long time," Mendenhall said. UVA appeared to be the Coastal frontrunner after winning four straight to open the season. However, a stretch of three losses in four games -- two to ACC opponents Miami and Louisville -- kept the divisional race tight. November wins over North Carolina and Georgia Tech set up Friday's Commonwealth Cup showdown. Virginia has failed twice at home against the Hokies with a chance to claim the division in the season-ending game, losing 33-21 in 2007 and 38-0 in 2011. --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Brian Delaney kicked a 48-yard field with 1:23 to play to put Virginia ahead and the Cavaliers sealed it with a defensive score, beating No. 23 Virginia Tech 39-30 Friday to end a 15-game losing streak in the rivalry and earn their first trip to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game. Bryce Perkins ran for two long touchdowns and passed for another for the Cavaliers (9-3, 6-2), who became the seventh different winner in as many years to claim the Coastal Division. Delaney also kicked a 25-yard field goal for Virginia, and his last kick made up for a missed extra point early. Hendon Hooker ran for one touchdown and threw for another for the Hokies (8-4, 5-3), who came in having won six of seven games to surge into championship contention. The Cavaliers' winning drive began with Noah Taylor's interception of Hooker's pass at the Virginia 35. Virginia moved steadily downfield, not facing a third down play until it was third-and-15 from the Hokies' 40. Perkins hit Tavares Kelly for nine yards and Delaney converted the kick, setting off a cautious celebration. On the Hokies ensuing possession, the Cavaliers sacked Hooker on three straight plays. Mandy Alonso had the last one, forcing a fumble that Eli Hanback recovered in the end zone, finally giving the Virginia faithful enough cushion to celebrate the end of the Hokies' decade-and-a-half of domination. Virginia led 13-6 after a defensive first half, but then the offenses took over. Hooker ran 34 yards to tie the game at 13. The next three series ended in punts before the Hokies drove 71 yards to take their first lead at 20-13 on Deshawn McClease's 1-yard run. Virginia answered with a 79-yard march, Perkins hitting Joe Reed early in the drive for 42 yards to the Virginia Tech 35 and later connecting with Billy Kemp for the last 30 yards and the tying touchdown. A 39-yard pass from Hooker to Tre Turner made it 27-20, and three plays into the fourth quarter, Wayne Taulapapa's 2-yard run tied it at 27. The ensuing possessions produced field goals for each team, making it 30-30 and setting up the finish. Perkins ripped of touchdown runs of 39 and 67 yards in the first half to make it 13-3. He had 137 rushing yards in the opening quarter. THE TAKEAWAYVirginia Tech: The Hokies had been 6-0 with Hooker as the starter, in part because of a surging defense and Hooker's efficiency. He came into the game having thrown for 10 touchdowns with no interceptions in those starts, and while his streak ended at 124 passes without a pick on a Hail Mary throw to end the first half, the interception by Taylor on a deep ball proved the critical play of the game. Virginia: Perkins started slowly throwing the ball but used those two huge draw play runs to cause the Hokies to have to adjust. He finally found his rhythm in the passing game and finished 20 of 33 for 311 yards. He also ran for 164 yards with 137 of those coming in the opening quarter. UP NEXTVirginia Tech will await it 27th consecutive bowl invitation, the longest such streak in the nation. Virginia will represent the Coastal Division against No. 3 Clemson in the ACC championship next Saturday in Charlotte, North Carolina. ---Follow Hank on Twitter: www. twitter. com/hankkurzjr---More college football: https://apnews. com/Collegefootball and https://twitter. com/-Top25

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. Quinten Dormady threw two touchdown passes, Kobe Lewis ran for two scores and Central Michigan beat Toledo on Friday to win the Mid-American Conference West Division title. The Chippewas (8-4, 6-2), who won one game and were winless in the conference last season, will face MAC-East champion Miami (Ohio) in the conference championship on Dec. 7 at Ford Field in Detroit. It's CMUs first trip to the title game since 2009. Dormady lofted a 48-yard touchdown pass to Tyrone Scott on Central Michigan's fourth play from scrimmage. The Chippewas scored on all five of their possessions in the first half and opened the second with a 10-play drive capped by Dormady's 9-yard score to Tony Poljan. Dormady finished with 250 yards passing. Lewis ran for 131 yards on 22 carries with scoring runs of 2 and 8 yards. Backup quarterback Tommy Lazzaro added a pair of touchdown runs and finished with 52 yards rushing for the Chippewas. Jonathan Ward added 88 yards on the ground and a 3-yard touchdown run. Bryant Koback ran for an 8-yard touchdown in the second quarter for Toledo (6-6, 3-5), which closed the season with three straight loses.

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019LITTLE ROCK, Ark. Third-string quarterback Taylor Powell came off the bench Friday and led Missouri to three scoring drives and a come-from-behind 24-14 win over Arkansas, snapping the Tigers’ five-game losing streak in both teams’ season finale. Powell, who had started one game for Missouri earlier in the season for the injured Kelly Bryant, had been relegated behind Connor Bazelak on Friday. Bazelak, in his first career start, left in the second quarter and Powell, a graduate of Fayetteville High School, then led Missouri (6-6, 3-5 SEC) on two go-ahead drives - one in the second quarter and another in the third - to beat his hometown team. Arkansas (2-10, 0-8), using its fifth starting quarterback of the season, had little luck offensively. Junior Jack Lindsey, who began the season as the fifth-stringer and only earned a scholarship in August, completed just 10 of 26 passes for 75 yards. Two of Lindsey’s completions were for touchdowns, both times giving Arkansas the lead. Powell responded by leading a go-ahead field goal drive in the second quarter and a go-ahead touchdown drive in the third. The Tigers’ defense, which allowed just 242 yards of total offense, twice snuffed Arkansas drives in Missouri territory in the fourth quarter. Powell finished 8 of 14 for 105 yards with a fourth-quarter touchdown pass to former Arkansas wide receiver Jonathan Nance. THE TAKEAWAYMissouri: The Tigers have been a thorn for Arkansas since joining the SEC. Missouri has won the last four meetings and six of the last seven between the two teams. Arkansas: Arkansas is in the midst of the worst two-year stretch in school history, having finished 2-10 in back-to-back seasons and riding a 19-game SEC losing streak. UP NEXTMissouri: The Tigers cannot play in a bowl game despite their . 500 record. The NCAA upheld a postseason football ban against the school on Tuesday after nearly a year-long appeal process. Arkansas: The Razorbacks will seek a permanent solution at quarterback after starting eight different bodies over the last two years, including five in 2019. They will also have to hire a permanent coach. Barry Lunney Jr. served his second game as interim coach after taking over for Chad Morris, who was fired on November 10.

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 25, 2019There won't be any championships or appearances in the Big Ten championship game at stake, but there still will be plenty for which to shop for both No. 19 Iowa and Nebraska when they meet on Black Friday in Lincoln, Neb. For Iowa (8-3, 5-3), it will be a chance to solidify positioning for a New Year's Day bowl game somewhere warm and a chance to get to the nine-win mark for the second straight year and just the third time since 2009. The Hawkeyes enter having won four of their last five games and has been stout defensively this year, having only given up 20 or more points in two games this season. Iowa earned a 31-28 win over the Cornhuskers last year in Iowa City. "It's going to be a tough game," Hawkeyes head coach Kirk Ferentz said. "It's a tough environment to play in. We had a three-point game last year that went down to the wire, so I expect the same kind of challenge this week. " Nebraska (5-6, 3-5) also has a lot at stake. The Cornhuskers are hoping to end what has been an otherwise disappointing season on a high note and gain bowl-eligibility. Nebraska snapped a four-game losing streak with a 54-7 rout at Maryland, in the process overcoming a virus that spread through the locker room and forced several players to sit out. "I was just really happy for the team and the enthusiasm they had and the way they played for each other and played together," Nebraska head coach Scott Frost said. "I think that was the difference. " This will be the third ranked team Nebraska has played this year, and the previous two haven't gone well at all for the Cornhuskers. Nebraska lost 48-7 to Ohio State (Sept. 28) and 37-21 at home to Wisconsin (Nov. 16) in the other meetings this year against ranked foes. But Frost said that he feels his team is due for some breaks this year, and hopes the good vibes after dominating the Terrapins will carry over to the home finale for his team. "We're playing a really good team on Friday," Frost said. "I've had a chance to watch Iowa and they are one of the best teams in the league. We are going to do everything we can to try and get ready for a really good team. A win (Saturday) gives us a chance. It gives me more enthusiasm for things to come. This team could have shut it down, shut it off, stopped caring and stopped playing hard. They're not doing that. " The game will offer a different challenge for each team because it will mean shorter preparation time playing six days later instead of seven. "It's a little tricky because it is shorter and we are at the end of the season, so we;ll have to be really careful about what we ask our players to do," Ferentz said. "The bottom line is you turn the page. " --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019LINCOLN, Neb. Keith Duncan kicked a 48-yard field goal with one second left, giving No. 19 Iowa a 27-24 victory over Nebraska on Friday that leaves the Cornhuskers out of the postseason for a third consecutive season. The Hawkeyes (9-3, 6-3 Big Ten) overcame a sluggish second half offensively to beat the Cornhuskers (5-7, 3-6) for a fifth straight year and second year in a row on a late field goal. Last year they won on Miguel Recinos' 41-yarder as time expired. Iowa, which had its 14-point lead wiped out in the third quarter, started its final possession at its 26 with 32 seconds left. Nate Stanley had a long pass to Nico Ragaini overturned to incomplete on video review, but then completed a pair of 22-yard passes to Ihmir Smith-Marsette and Sam LaPorta to bring on the reliable Duncan. The Huskers called two timeouts before Duncan drilled the winner down the middle and with plenty of distance. ''He's proven time and time again in practice and in games that he's going to perform for us,'' Stanley said. ''We knew we didn't have to score a touchdown. We feel confident with our guys that we're going to be able to make plays out there. '' Nebraska, down 24-10 at half, tied it with back-to-back touchdowns in the third quarter. Luke McCaffrey entered the game for a play in place of quarterback Adrian Martinez, rolled to his left and hit JD Spielman with a perfect 39-yard TD pass. After the Huskers forced a punt, Martinez was back in and the Huskers played some power football while driving 60 yards for the tying score. The Huskers ran on 12 of 13 plays, the only pass being an 11-yarder to Kade Warner to convert a fourth-and-6 before Wyatt Mazour ran up the middle into the end zone from 9 yards. Smith-Marsette scored on a 45-yard on a reverse run and ran back a kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown and Tyler Goodson broke a 55-yard TD run as Iowa got out to its lead in the first half. Iowa had 18 plays for 191 yards in the first quarter but just 131 yards on 38 plays for the remainder of the game. Iowa gained 11 yards in the second quarter and 7 in the third. Iowa rushed for 225 yards, its most since going for 351 against Middle Tennessee on Sept. 28, but 100 came on two scoring plays. ''It was about three plays on defense in the first half,'' Nebraska coach Scott Frost said. ''Our edge lost contain on the reverse, which can't happen. We got cut out of the backside of another. We missed tackle on another one. Aside from that, the defense held its own against the run game and did a great job against what probably will be an NFL quarterback, an NFL arm. Those two big plays and the kickoff return really hurt us. '' Stanley completed 11 of 24 passes for 99 yards, his lowest total since throwing for 86 against Maryland last year. Tyler Goodson ran 13 times for a season-high 116 yards. Iowa's Kirk Ferentz moved ahead of the man he replaced, Hayden Fry, on the Big Ten list for career conference wins. Ferentz now has 97 in 21 seasons, behind only Ohio State's Woody Hayes (153), Michigan's Bo Schembechler (143) and the University of Chicago's Amos Alonzo Stagg (115). This was the ninth straight Black Friday meeting between Iowa and Nebraska. A Big Ten scheduling change-up has the Huskers playing Minnesota on the day after Thanksgiving the next two years. Iowa-Nebraska will be back on Black Friday in 2022. THE TAKEAWAYIowa: This was a hard-fought win for the Hawkeyes and one they'll savor because it came against their border rival. Except for the big-play touchdowns, their offense continued to be middling. Nebraska: The Huskers dropped to 0-6 against Top 25 opponents over two seasons under Frost. POLL IMPLICATIONSIowa will stay in the Top 25 thanks to Duncan's late field goal. ---This version corrects attribution on Iowa quote to Nate Stanley instead of Kirk Ferentz. ---More college football: https://apnews. com/Top25CollegeFootballPoll and https://apnews. com/Collegefootball and https://twitter. com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 26, 2019No. 20 Boise State has already wrapped up a berth in the Mountain West championship game, so coach Bryan Harsin is ready to pull out the motivational tricks. The truth is, the Broncos' Friday road game against Colorado State has no bearing on the conference endeavors, but Harsin has found a nugget to wave in front of the troops. The Broncos (10-1, 7-0) are in their ninth season in the Mountain West, and they have never notched an undefeated conference regular season. "To have a chance to go undefeated in conference play for the first time in Mountain West history for Boise State, to me, that's a challenge in itself," Harsin said. "When you get a chance to talk about doing something for the first time, if that doesn't fire you up as a competitor, something is wrong with you. . . . "We're not playing the championship game this week. We're playing Colorado State. " The Broncos clinched the Mountain Division crown last Saturday with a 56-21 steamrolling of Utah State. They will host West Division winner Hawaii in the Dec. 7 title game. Staying sharp will be part of the focus against the Rams (4-7, 3-4). Dealing with the elements will be another, as the Fort Collins area is slated to receive more than a foot of snow this week. As for the quarterback situation, Harsin sidestepped questions pertaining to whether fifth-year senior Jaylon Henderson would make his third straight start, or if true freshman Hank Bachmeier (shoulder) might play for just the second time since Oct. 12 or if sophomore Chase Cord (hand) could return for the first time since Nov. 9. "No season-ending injuries. You can try and keep asking," Harsin said. "Guys are all available to play. That's where we are. One quarterback plays at a time, that's the reality of it. " Henderson was superb the past two weeks as Boise State averaged 49 points in routs of New Mexico and Utah State. He passed for three touchdowns in each game. Harsin said Henderson's performance was due to how he kept his preparation level high even when he was the third option. "Jaylon's performance against New Mexico told me he has just been sitting there waiting," Harsin said of a 292-yard passing effort on Nov. 16. "And when he got the nod, let's roll. " Colorado State has nothing to play for -- unless competing to keep coach Mike Bobo employed counts. The fifth-year coach is 28-34 with the Rams but is just 7-16 over the past two seasons entering the contest against Boise State, a team Colorado State has never beaten in eight attempts. "Any time you're playing somebody who is considered one of the best teams in the country, I think that gives you an extra incentive as a football team to go out and prove you can play with anybody," Bobo said. The Rams have lost their past two games, including a 17-7 setback at Wyoming last weekend in "The Border War. " Junior quarterback Patrick O'Brien has had his moments while passing for 2,514 yards, 11 touchdowns and five interceptions. O'Brien has topped 300 yards four times, twice exceeding 400. Junior wideout Warren Jackson is having a huge season with 69 receptions for 1,035 yards and seven touchdowns. The 1,000-yard campaign is just the 14th in school history. Jackson also happens to maintain that there is no such thing as a meaningless contest. He said there will be an all-out assault in search of a season-ending win. "We're not going to quit. We're going to give it everything we've got until the clock hits 0:00," Jackson said. "Last year, we would just get blown out, no hope. Just little mistakes and tiny errors are just hurting us. I can see it almost coming together, but just not yet. That's the tough part. " --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019FORT COLLINS, Colo. Jaylon Henderson accounted for three scores, defensive tackle David Moa came up with a big late sack and No. 20 Boise State beat Colorado State 31-24 on Friday to finish undefeated in Mountain West conference play for the first time. Henderson ran for a short score early in the fourth to give Boise State some breathing room. He also threw two TD passes, giving him eight over the past three games as he fills in for banged-up starter Hank Bachmeier and backup Chase Cord. Garrett Collingham hauled in one of Henderson's TD passes and ran in another as the Broncos head into the league's championship game with a head of steam. They host Hawaii next Saturday. This version of Boise State (11-1, 8-0 MW, No. 20 CFP) became the program's first to run through Mountain West regular season play unblemished. The Broncos have finished the conference portion of their schedule with one loss five times since joining the league in 2011. Patrick O'Brien threw for 289 yards and two TDs for the Rams (4-8, 3-5), who dropped to 0-9 all-time against Boise State. Rams coach Mike Bobo heads into the offseason on the hot seat after a second straight losing season. He's 28-35 in five seasons at Colorado State. With Colorado State on the move late, Moa sacked O'Brien to thwart the drive. Colorado State punted with just over 2 minutes remaining. The Broncos converted a third-down play on a diving catch by Khalil Shakir. From there, Boise State was able to run out the clock. The sparse crowd was announced at 12,324 on a chilly and overcast afternoon. Only the middle sections of the stadium were open following a blizzard earlier in the week that dropped around 15 inches of snow. Most of the upper deck and behind the south end zone were blanketed in snow. The Colorado State facilities management crews moved approximately two million pounds of snow from the playing surface to get it ready. O'Brien drew the Rams to within 24-21 with a 28-yard strike to tight end Trey McBride late in the third quarter. Henderson restored a 31-21 lead on a 1-yard TD with 11:26 remaining. After a 34-yard field goal by Braxton Davis and forcing a Boise State punt, the Rams got the ball back with 3:53 left but were forced to punt. There were no punts in the first half. Well, technically no punts as Colorado State was called for a running into the punter in the first quarter to keep a Boise State drive going. The Broncos capitalized by scoring on a 2-yard run from Collingham. O'Brien threw two first-half interceptions, including one that Broncos linebacker Curtis Weaver tipped at the line and dove to secure. THE TAKEAWAYBoise State: A methodical performance. The Broncos had two scoring drives that lasted at least 7 minutes. Colorado State: The Rams fell to 14-35 against ranked teams since 1993. POLL IMPLICATIONSBoise State should move up after spending the past two versions of the poll at No. 20. UP NEXTBoise State: Host Hawaii in the Mountain West title game Saturday. The Broncos beat Hawaii 59-37 on Oct. 12. Colorado State: Gear up for 2020. Will host Colorado on Sept. 5. ---More college football: https://apnews. com/Collegefootball and https://twitter. com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 25, 2019Cincinnati will be playing to secure home-field advantage in the American Athletic Conference championship game while host Memphis will be looking to clinch a spot in that affair when the teams collide Friday afternoon. The No. 19 Bearcats (10-1, 7-0 AAC) captured the East Division title with their 15-13 victory over Temple on Saturday, when the 18th-ranked Tigers (10-1, 6-1) romped past South Florida to set up what could be the first of back-to-back meetings between the division leaders. Memphis can clinch the West title with a win over Cincinnati, and thereby host the Bearcats in the AAC title game on Dec. 7. If the Tigers lose, they can still get into the championship game if Navy (8-2, 6-1) loses at Houston on Saturday night. Memphis and the Midshipmen then would have identical 5-2 conference records, but the Tigers hold the advantage in the tiebreaker. The Tigers also own the tiebreaker over Southern Methodist (9-2, 5-2) if the Mustangs make it a three-way tie, but the championship game would be played in Cincinnati. "This is a must-win for us," Memphis coach Mike Norvell said. He's not thinking of facing the Bearcats two weeks in a row. "If we have the opportunity to get them again, we'll focus on that when we get there," Norvell said. "But right now, it's all about this week and the opportunity in front of us. " The Tigers are coming off what Norvell called one of their "most complete" games of the season with the 49-10 win at South Florida. It ran their winning streak to five games and put them one victory shy of what could be a school-record 11-victory campaign. The Bearcats haven't lost since absorbing a 42-0 pounding at Ohio State in their second game of the season, a setback that "stung," according to Cincinnati coach Luke Fickell. "It cost us a lot at the time," Fickell said of the loss to the Buckeyes, "but it also allowed us to grow a lot. " The Bearcats' last two outings featured a field goal as time ran out for a 20-17 win over South Florida, and a blocked extra point attempt that cornerback Coby Bryant returned 98 yards for a critical two points against the Owls. Quarterback Desmond Ridder has been dealing with a shoulder issue that might have played a role in his past two games. He is 18 for 43 for 140 yards in that stretch. "We've got a group of guys that can just find a way," Fickell said. Norvell's Tigers rolled over South Florida behind quarterback Brady White, who overcame two early interceptions to finish 18 of 28 passing for 222 yards and a pair of scores. White is seventh nationally in passing efficiency with a 180. 0 rating, having completed 204 of 304 passes for 3,074 yards, 30 touchdowns and seven interceptions. Kenneth Gainwell rushed for 128 yards in that contest, while fellow running back Patrick Taylor Jr. , who missed considerable time after suffering a foot injury, ran for 95 yards and three touchdowns. --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019MEMPHIS, Tenn. Brady White threw for 233 yards and two touchdowns as No. 17 Memphis beat 18th-ranked Cincinnati 34-24 Friday for the Tigers’ third straight American Athletic Conference West title and the right to host the league championship - and the Bearcats again - next week. This will be the first time that Memphis (11-1, 7-1, No. 18 CFP) will host a conference title game in program history. And the league championship will be a rematch between these teams after Memphis snapped a nine-game winning streak by the East Division champs. Cincinnati (10-2, 7-1, No. 19 CFP) hadn’t lost since being routed by Ohio State on Sept. 7. Joseph Dorceus and Bryce Huff had two sacks apiece, and Memphis finished with five. The Tigers came up with three turnovers, including an interception by Sanchez Blake Jr. with 1:35 left. Memphis also forced Cincinnati three-and-out after Ahmad Gardner intercepted White with 7:49 left with the Tigers up only 27-24. The Tigers led only 20-17 when they put together their longest drive, going 83 yards over nine plays capped by a flea flicker. Patrick Taylor took the handoff, handed to Kedarian Jones who flipped the ball to White, and he hit Damonte Coxie for a 46-yard TD with 13:22 left. Antonio Gibson scored on a 29-yard TD run with 3:16 left for the final margin for Memphis. Cincinnati started redshirt freshman Ben Bryant for the first time, snapping a 24-game streak of starts for Desmond Ridder whose ailing shoulder limited him to 140 yards passing combined over his past two games. Bryant had nearly that by halftime and finished with 229 for Cincinnati’s fourth-highest passing game this season. He threw a 4-yard TD pass to Leonard Taylor helping Cincinnati put together back-to-back TD drives in the second quarter to tie it up at 17 just before halftime. Michael Warren II followed with a 3-yard TD run. Bryant also ran for a 12-yard TD with 10:27 left as Cincinnati pulled within 27-24. Memphis led 14-3 after Chris Claybrooks took the opening kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown, and White hit Kedarian Jones for a 9-yard TD pass in the first quarter. THE TAKEAWAYCincinnati: The Bearcats came in leading the AAC in scoring defense, allowing just 19. 9 points a game. They held the nation’s eighth-best scoring offense below its average of 42. 2 points a game, and Memphis didn’t match its average of 488. 2 yards a game. Even with the offensive boost Bryant provided, it wasn’t enough. Memphis: The Tigers already came in leading the nation in special teams efficiency and with the most kickoffs returned for TDs in the past four years with 10. Claybrooks became the fifth different player to score at least once on a kickoff return. UP NEXTMemphis will host Cincinnati on Dec. 7 in a rematch for the American title with a possible spot in the Cotton Bowl also on the line. ---More college football: https://apnews. com/Collegefootball and https://twitter. com/-Top25---Follow Teresa M. GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019SEATTLE Jacob Eason threw for 244 yards and one touchdown and ran for another, Richard Newton added a pair of short touchdown runs, and Washington kept possession of the Apple Cup for a seventh straight season after a 31-13 win over Washington State on Friday. Eason was excellent using his tight ends to pick apart Washington State's defense in what could be his final home game after just one season with Washington. Eason seems destined for the NFL, the question is whether it will be after this season or if he'll return for his senior year. If this was it, he went out on a high note after Washington's offense that staggered through its past two games scoring just 19 and 14 points against Oregon State and Colorado. Eason was 15-of-22 passing and his favorite targets were tight ends Hunter Bryant and Cade Otton, who combined for nine receptions for 142 yards. Eason also hit Terrell Bynum on a perfectly placed 16-yard TD pass and Eason added a 3-yard score on a QB sneak. The seven straight wins are the longest in the series since the Huskies won eight between 1974-81. All seven have been by double-digits. After three straight years where the Pac-12 North title was at stake for one or the other in the Apple Cup, this year's clash had little buzz and no implications outside of potentially a slightly better bowl game assignment for the winner. But the Huskies (7-5, 4-5 Pac-12) have relished in their ability to stymie the Air Raid offense of Mike Leach and did it again. Washington State was held 28 points under its season average and didn't find the end zone after Max Borghi's 1-yard TD run on the opening drive of the game. Washington State quarterback Anthony Gordon - the leading passer in the country - threw for 308 yards on 48-of-62 passing, but nearly all his throws were underneath and the Cougars (6-6, 3-6) couldn't stretch the field vertically against Washington's secondary. He was held without a TD pass for the first time this season after entering with 45, including 11 in the past two. Despite the offensive struggles, Washington State twice had a chance to pull within one score early in the fourth quarter. The most crushing was Deon McIntosh's fumble at the Washington 10 with 12:57 remaining. The Huskies did nothing with the turnover, but Gordon made his worst decision of the day on the ensuing drive, throwing a careless pass while scrambling that was intercepted by Trent McDuffie. Peyton Henry's 22-yard field goal with 6:35 left provided the final cushion for Washington. EARLY LEADWashington State scored on its opening possession, going 81 yards in 13 plays and capping the drive on Borghi's 1-yard TD run. It was the first time the Cougars scored a touchdown in the first quarter against Washington since 2012. THE TAKEAWAYWashington State: Gordon reached 5,000 yards passing for the season, the 16th time that's happened in FBS history. He has 5,228 going into the Cougars' bowl game. . . . Borghi had just 50 yards rushing and the Cougars finished with 31 as a team. Washington: The Huskies sacked Gordon five times after the Cougars had allowed just 13 all season. Joe Tryon had two sacks. UP NEXTWashington State: The Cougars will wait a week to find out their bowl assignment. Washington: The Huskies will wait to find out their bowl assignment. ---More college football: https://apnews. com/Collegefootball and https://twitter. com/-Top25

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019FORT WORTH, Texas Jarret Doege threw a 35-yard touchdown pass to Isaiah Esdale with 2:10 left and West Virginia ended coach Neal Brown’s first season with a 20-17 win on Friday that kept TCU from getting bowl eligible. The game-winning drive by West Virginia (5-7, 3-6 Big 12) was extended by two huge penalties. There was a pass interference call on a fourth down, and then TCU defensive tackle Ross Blacklock was ejected for targeting for a hit on Doege on a third-and-12 incompletion. That shot came only two plays before the TD to Esdale, who managed to get his feet just inside the pylon in the front corner of the end zone. TCU (5-7, 3-6) isn’t bowl eligible for only the third time in Gary Patterson’s 19 full seasons as head coach. The Horned Frogs lost four of their last five games. All those losses were by a touchdown or less, including losses to Big 12 co-leaders Baylor and Oklahoma. Doege completed 20 of 35 passes for 158 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. The Bowling Green transfer will maintain his junior status next season after playing in only four games. Horned Frogs freshman quarterback Max Duggan was 15-of-36 passing for 144 yards with two interceptions as both teams had fewer than 300 total yards on a cool, damp day. TCU had 297 yards, and West Virginia 244. TCU went ahead 17-10 when Jalen Reagor had a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown early in the third quarter. Reagor initially took a step back and around to avoid a defender after fielding the ball, then charged forward and quickly past other defenders and the punter. It was an easy sprint to the end zone for his second punt return TD this season for the junior receiver, who could have played his last home game if he decides to bypass his senior season for early entry in the NFL draft. THE TAKEAWAYWest Virginia: The Mountaineers’ only other touchdown came on their opening drive, when they only had to go 14 yards after Tykee Smith’s interception and 39-yard return. Doege threw a 3-yard TD pass to running back Leddie Brown, who was wide open coming out of the backfield. TCU: The Frogs had last missed a bowl game in 2013. TCU had two more possessions after West Virginia’s go-ahead score. After one first down, Duggan had four incompletions in a row at his own 33. TCU used all three of its timeouts and got the ball back. Duggan hit Reagor for 18 yards before clocking the ball and then throwing three more incompletions. UP NEXTWest Virginia goes into the offseason, and will open the 2020 season Sept. 5 against Florida State in Atlanta. TCU goes into a longer than usual offseason with no bowl game. The Horned Frogs open the 2020 season Sept. 5 at California. ---More college football: https://apnews. com/tag/Collegefootball and https://twitter. com/-Top25

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019MOBILE, Ala. Sophomore Jalen Tolbert caught five passes for a school-record four touchdowns, Rocel McWilliams came up with a game-saving sack and South Alabama snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 34-30 victory over Arkansas State on Friday. The Jaguars (2-10, 1-7) picked up their first Sun Belt Conference win in their season finale as Desmond Trotter tied a school record with four TD passes. Trotter completed 20 of 31 passes for 279 yards with an interception. Tolbert finished with 144 yards, topping the 100-yard mark for the first time in his career. His scoring catches went for 21 and 30 yards in the first quarter and 31 and 26 yards in the fourth quarter. South Alabama took a 27-17 lead early in the fourth quarter after Trotter's third TD toss to Tolbert. But the Red Wolves (7-5, 5-3) scored on three straight possessions - a Layne Hatcher 1-yard TD run and two field goals by Blake Grupe - to take a 30-27 lead with 3:51 left in the game. Trotter answered with a nine-play, 61-yard drive that ended with TD pass number four to Tolbert for a 34-30 Jaguars' lead with 1:18 remaining. Arkansas State had one last shot after a 22-yard kickoff return by Jeff Foreman and a personal foul on South Alabama's Shawn Jennings gave the Red Wolves the ball at their own 40-yard line. But McWilliams sacked Hatcher on first down and teammate Jeffery Whatley recovered, allowing the Jaguars to run out the clock. Hatcher completed 23 of 38 passes for 342 yards and two TDs for Arkansas State, which saw a four-game win streak end. Kirk Merritt had nine catches for 121 yards. Tra Minter rushed for 106 yards and a TD on 21 carries for South Alabama.

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019ORLANDO, Fla. Dillon Gabriel threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns, Adrian Killins rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown, and UCF concluded its regular season with a 34-7 win over South Florida in the War on I-4 on Friday night. The Knights (9-3, 6-2) were never seriously tested, as they built a 24-0 lead by halftime with a 35-yard touchdown run from Killins and a 32-yard scoring reception from Gabriel Davis. They erased any lingering doubt as to the outcome when they drove 82 yards for another touchdown immediately after USF finally got on the scoreboard in the third quarter. UCF gained 495 yards to the Bulls' 181 through the first three quarters. The disparity narrowed to 539-250 after a fourth quarter in which the final margin was all that was left to be determined. The Bulls committed three turnovers, while the hosts committed none. For USF (4-8, 2-6), Jordan McCloud completed 9 of 21 passes for 116 yards and two interceptions. Johnny Ford added 58 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. THE TAKEAWAYUCF: The Knights' ascendancy as a program has coincided with a marked shift in results in the War on I-4 rivalry. While USF leads the overall series 6-5, UCF won for the fifth time in the seven meetings between the schools since the Knights became members of the American Athletic Conference. USF: The Bulls seemed out of sorts at times, committing four false start penalties in the first quarter alone. USF concluded 2019 with five losses in its final six games, falling to 4-14 since starting the 2018 season 7-0. As a result, coach Charlie Strong's job may be in jeopardy. UP NEXTUCF: Awaits the announcement of its destination and opponent for the program's 11th bowl game appearance. The Knights have earned a bowl bid in seven of their last eight seasons. USF: Awaits the start of spring practice, as its season ended with Friday's loss. ---More college football: http://apnews. com/tag/Collegefootball and http://www. twitter. com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 28, 2019Kyrie Irving was persona non grata by Boston Celtics fans Wednesday even if he was nowhere near the arena. The point guard received boos and derisive chants for leaving Boston to sign a max contract with the Brooklyn Nets in the summer.Irving's next chance at facing the team he left after two seasons may not be Friday afternoon when the Nets host the Celtics, who hope to get another big game from Kemba Walker.Irving has not played since Nov. 14 in Denver due to right shoulder impingement that he initially sustained Nov. 12 in Utah. The Nets are 5-2 since Irving last played and saw a four-game winning streak snapped with Wednesday's 121-110 loss at Boston on a night in which they hit 21 3-pointers on 56 attempts.Even though Irving was not in the building, fans constantly booed any reference to him and some even put up posters in the vicinity labeling the All-Star point guard "a coward". Afterward, Irving took to social media by writing a lengthy Instagram post that read: "It happens all the time and Tonight just shows how Sports/Entertainment will always be ignorant and obtrusive. It's one big SHOW that means very little in the real world." As for whether Irving will return from the injury Friday, the Nets did not commit one way or the other following the game.Spencer Dinwiddie has helped the Nets get by without Irving, averaging 23.4 points in the last seven games but he was held to 16 on 5-of-19 shooting Wednesday after getting at least 20 in a career-high six straight games. The Nets struggled without him on the floor, allowing a 24-11 run spanning the third and fourth quarters."We've got confidence in everybody's talent in this locker room so we're not really worried about that," Dinwiddie said. "Who plays and who doesn't, we can't control that. At the end of the day, we believe in the guys, one through 15." The Nets will hope to stop Walker, who torched them for 39 points in his return from a one-game absence following a scary neck injury last Friday following a collision with teammate Semi Ojeleye in Denver. Walker shot 13 of 24 and made six 3-pointers while often getting off mid-range jumpers against Nets center Jarrett Allen.Like the Celtics, Walker was hardly paying attention to the reaction toward Irving. Instead, he was more focused on returning after a short absence."I've been over it. I could have played last game, honestly," Walker said. "If I'm on the court, I'm on the court. That's really it. I wasn't thinking about anything. I wanted to win. I wanted to be aggressive, build the intensity." Walker is averaging 22.3 points in his first season with the Celtics and has four 30-point games. Jayson Tatum is not far behind at 20.2 points after getting 16 Wednesday while Jaylen Brown is averaging 19.4 after finishing with 22 Wednesday, his third straight game with at least 22 points. The Celtics are 3-3 since ripping off 10 straight wins Oct. 25-Nov. 15. The three losses are by a combined eight points and Boston is still waiting to get Gordon Hayward back from the broken left hand he sustained in San Antonio on Nov. 9.The Celtics lost both visits to Brooklyn last season but are 11-2 in the past 13 meetings with the Nets.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019NEW YORK Spencer Dinwiddie had 32 points and 11 assists while Kyrie Irving was again unable to face his former team, and the Brooklyn Nets beat the Boston Celtics 112-107 on Friday to split a home-and-home series.Irving missed his eighth straight game with a right shoulder injury but was at the arena to get an evaluation and watch from the bench along with Kevin Durant as Dinwiddie kept up his strong play in his place. The Eastern Conference player of the week last week matched his highest assist total of the season and was two shy of his best scoring performance of the season.Jarrett Allen added 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Nets, who bounced back from their 121-110 loss in Boston on Wednesday to win for the fifth time in six games.Jayson Tatum had 26 points and nine rebounds for the Celtics, who had won two in a row. Kemba Walker finished with 17 points and six assists.Boston coach Brad Stevens talked about the importance of a strong start with the early tip, but the Celtics couldn't deliver it. They were called for a double dribble and a 3-second violation during a six-turnover first quarter, when the Nets opened a 14-point lead. Boston was much sharper in the second, with Tatum making four 3-pointers, including one that cut it to 58-55 at halftime. The Nets extended it back to 14 in the third when Dinwiddie hit his second straight 3-pointer, but Boston got it back down to 87-81 by the end of the period. Again, Brooklyn pushed it back to double digits in the fourth and held on after Boston cut it to four in the final minute.TIP-INSCeltics: Tatum was 4 for 8 from 3-point range after going 0 for 11 in his previous three games. ... Marcus Smart scored 15 points.Nets: DeAndre Jordan had eight points and 11 rebounds after missing two games with left ankle soreness. ... Taurean Prince scored 16 points.MORE ON KYRIETwo days after Celtics fans taunted Irving even in his absence, and he responded with a long Instagram post saying sports and entertainment were ''ignorant and obtrusive.'' , a group of Nets fans chanted ''Kyrie's better! Kyrie's better!'' when Walker shot free throws. None of the anger in Boston toward Irving is coming from Stevens.''I like Kyrie, I appreciated Kyrie, wished him well and I think that him coming home has been something that he wanted to do and he was a free agent,'' Stevens said. ''You get to make that choice and we can't do anything but respect that and be happy for him.'' NEW LOOKThe Nets debuted their uniforms in tribute to the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of the borough that was home to The Notorious B. I. G. GAME PREVIEW
Nov 28, 2019The Detroit Pistons have suffered two excruciating road losses to the Charlotte Hornets this season, and they will not have to wait long to seek some payback for the latest defeat.Charlotte won the first meeting 109-106 on Nov. 15 on Malik Monk's buzzer-beating 3-pointer. The rematch on Wednesday provided more heartbreak for the Pistons.Detroit had a chance to win in the final seconds but sixth man Derrick Rose, well-guarded in the lane, passed the ball as the clock ran out. The lack of clock awareness allowed Charlotte to hang on for a 102-101 victory. They'll play again on Friday, this time at Detroit.Charlotte outscored Detroit 31-20 in the third quarter Wednesday and hung on despite scoring just 16 fourth-quarter points. The Hornets have defeated the Pistons eight consecutive times."I don't really just look at the end," Pistons forward Blake Griffin said. "I look at the stretches that we had where we just couldn't put together a stop or really get what we want offensively. But it's most frustrating because when we wanted to, we got stops and when we wanted to, we got out and ran and got easy buckets. We just became stagnant at times." That was particularly apparent in their 3-point percentage, as the Pistons shot just 10 for 32 from long range. Griffin, who missed the team's first 10 games due to hamstring and knee injuries, scored a season-high 26 points but the poor third quarter and the failed final possession doomed Detroit."The great thing about the league is we got another game to win Friday," Rose said. "We have time to be with our family tomorrow and understand that Friday we have the same team, so we have a chance to correct all the errors that we had during the game and understand that this team thinks they got our number." The first meeting had a similar theme. The Hornets gained the upper hand by outscoring the Pistons 32-18 in the third quarter."Whether we change the lineup or whatever it is I am not sure what we have to do to get ourselves going in that period of time but whatever it is tonight it bit us in the behind," Pistons coach Dwane Casey said.Charlotte committed just four turnovers Wednesday as Devonte' Graham dissected Detroit's defense with 16 points and a career-high 15 assists."I really liked the way our ball moved tonight," Hornets coach James Borrego said. "Spacing, the shots we were getting were fantastic. They probably didn't drop as much as we would had hoped, but what sustained us, and has to sustain us, is our defense. This is back-to-back games against Detroit where we held them to 41 points in the second half and that's really what got this game tonight." The Hornets also got unexpected contributions from center Bismack Biyombo, who had a team-high 19 points and nine rebounds. He filled in for Cody Zeller, who sat out due to a hip injury. Nicolas Batum added a season-high 13 points off the bench."Obviously we missed Cody tonight, but Biz stepped in," Borretgo said. "He gives us rim protection, protects the paint, talks, he's active defensively. Nic did the same thing. I thought Nic did a great job on Derrick Rose." --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019DETROIT Langston Galloway’s shot from around midcourt rimmed out at the buzzer, and the Charlotte Hornets held on for a 110-107 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Friday night.Charlotte completed a home-and-home sweep of the Pistons this week. Detroit must be wondering what it has to do to beat the Hornets. Charlotte edged the Pistons 109-106 earlier in the month and 102-101 on Wednesday night. This matchup went down to the wire again. The Hornets rallied from an eight-point deficit in the final quarter and led by three with 8.9 seconds left. Detroit inbounded the ball, and Luke Kennard missed a 3-pointer from near the top of the key. Galloway was able to run down the loose ball, and his last-ditch shot looked on line, but it wouldn’t go in.P. J. Washington scored 26 points for Charlotte, and Terry Rozier added 23. The Hornets were without center Cody Zeller because of a left hip injury.Derrick Rose led the Pistons with 23 points. With the score tied at 95, Galloway got a very friendly bounce off the rim when he sank a 3-pointer while being fouled. That four-point play started an 8-0 run, but Charlotte rallied.Devonte’ Graham put the Hornets up 108-106 with a 3-pointer - the Hornets went 19 of 38 from beyond the arc.Blake Griffin had a chance to tie it with 1:29 remaining, but he made just one of two free throws, and the Pistons didn’t score again. Detroit finished 10 of 20 from the line.STRONG STARTRozier made his first five 3-point attempts and scored 17 points in the first half. Kennard helped the Pistons mostly keep pace, making four 3s of his own in the first quarter. The teams combined to make 21 3-pointers in the first half, the most in a first half in any NBA game this season. The Hornets led 62-57.TIP-INSHornets: Miles Bridges scored 16 points in front of a crowd that included Tom Izzo, his coach at Michigan State.Pistons: The Pistons were without G Reggie Jackson (lumbar stress reaction). ... Detroit was called for its second delay of game violation at the start of the second half, so the third quarter began with a technical foul free throw for Charlotte, which Rozier made.UP NEXTHornets: At Milwaukee on Saturday night.Pistons: Host San Antonio on Sunday.---More NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 28, 2019The Orlando Magic could not beat the Raptors in two visits to Toronto this season, but on Friday have their first chance to play the NBA champions at home. The Magic have had trouble winning anywhere on the road this season. Their 116-104 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Wednesday night was their first win in eight road games this season and ended a four-game trip."It's why I feel good about this team is that they play three games on the road in a short period of time and it's been a struggle," Magic coach Steve Clifford told reporters. "They could have put their heads down. They could have come in here, last game of the trip, mailed it in and a lot of teams in this league would have done it, and I thought we fought hard." The Raptors are coming off a 126-98 blowout of the New York Knicks at home Wednesday that gave them a chance to use all their players, including rookie Shamorie Ponds for the first time."You just want to play the right way, play the way that we want to play and (with) the things that we are working on," Raptors coach Nick Nurse said. "It's an opportunity for them. It was Shamorie's first NBA game, you know, and he got himself a couple of buckets. It's good, you have to do that stuff sometimes and it is nice to do it in a game like that." The Raptors defeated the Magic in five games in the first round of the playoffs last season after the teams split the regular-season series 2-2.This season, the Raptors beat the Magic 104-95 on Oct. 28 and 113-97 on Nov. 20.The second loss in Toronto was particularly damaging to the Magic. They lost Aaron Gordon and leading scorer and rebounder Nikola Vucevic with ankle injuries in a three-minute stretch in the first half.Gordon could return Friday night and Vucevic is expected to be re-evaluated this weekend. Reserve point guard Michael Carter-Williams has missed the past four games with a left hip irritation."The one thing we don't want with any of the three of them is we don't want one of those hurry back and then he's in-out and not able to play well or something where they get hurt again," Clifford said. The Magic have been using a starting lineup of Wes Iwundu at small forward for Gordon, Khem Birch at center for Vucevic, and regulars Jonathan Isaac at forward, Evan Fournier and Markelle Fultz as guards. The Raptors have continued to excel despite playing without Serge Ibaka (sprained ankle) and Kyle Lowry (fractured thumb). Both were injured in a road win over the New Orleans Pelicans on Nov. 8. They are both nearing a return to the lineup, but the Raptors are 7-2 without them.Pascal Siakam had 31 points Wednesday and Fred VanVleet had 15, with both sitting out the fourth quarter with two other starters, Marc Gasol and Norman Powell."We just did enough to pull away, give ourselves some room," VanVleet said. "And the guys off the bench kind of gave us the rest of the separation we needed to not go back in the game." --Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 28, 2019Giannis Antetokounmpo continues his pursuit of an NBA double-double record when he encounters the team that almost ended his streak the first time around, as the Milwaukee Bucks visit the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday night. The Bucks have won nine in a row, and the Cavaliers have dropped eight of nine entering the teams' second meeting of the season.Milwaukee won the first easily, 129-112 at Cleveland on Oct. 28, but did so with great balance rather than a great performance by the reigning NBA Most Valuable Player.Seven Bucks scored in double figures in the win. Antetokounmpo tied for fifth on that list behind Khris Middleton (21 points), George Hill (19), Pat Connaughton (17) and Brook Lopez (16).In what was the Bucks' third game of the season, Antetokounmpo kept his streak of double-figure scoring games alive, but he barely made the rebound threshold with 10 despite playing into the game's 46th minute.Fifteen games later, the 14 points stand as his fewest of the season, eight fewer than any other game. The 10 rebounds are tied for fewest with three other games.Antetokounmpo has posted double-doubles in all 18 of the Cavaliers' games. The record for most consecutive double-doubles to start an NBA season is 34, set by Bill Walton in 1977.Antetokounmpo had another of his 10-rebound games on Wednesday in Milwaukee's 111-102 home win over the Atlanta Hawks. He scored 30 points -- 20 fewer than the total he poured on Monday against the visiting Utah Jazz. There were fewer shots to be had Wednesday with the return of Middleton from a seven-game absence caused by a bruised left thigh. Middleton contributed 16 points to the win, making five of his 13 shots.Middleton also found time for three rebounds, three assists and two steals in 20 minutes, recording a team-best plus-13 plus/minus off the bench."He understands how to get people involved, can make reads and decisions," Bucks coach Mike Budenholzer said after the win. "He can play for himself or play for others -- he does a lot of things well. I think he just calms the group down and he's a smart, smart player (who) understands what we want to do. It's great to have him back." Few teams have as many double-double threats as the Cavaliers, who got 13 points and 15 rebounds from Tristan Thompson and 11 points and 10 rebounds from Larry Nance Jr. on Wednesday in a 116-104 home loss to the Orlando Magic.Throw in Kevin Love, and at least one of the three has recorded a double-double in 14 of the team's 18 games. Two of them have done it in the same game seven times, including the first meeting with the Bucks, when Love had 15 points and 16 rebounds while Thompson had 17 points and 13 rebounds.Like Middleton, Love returned from an injury -- a bruised lower back -- to play Wednesday against the Magic, but he had little impact with nine points and five rebounds. He was limited to 24 minutes.Love had two of Cleveland's 25 turnovers on a night when rookie coach John Beilein left the arena scratching his head over the high number of traveling calls."It's not even a judgment thing," Beilein told reporters, noting that teams have been warned it's a point of emphasis this season. "It's a thing you've been doing for years and now you can't do it anymore, and that's what really gets me frustrated." --Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 28, 2019On Monday, Joel Embiid experienced the worst game of his career, going scoreless on 0-of-11 shooting in a close loss to the Toronto Raptors. The response was a normal one from the star center, who torched the Sacramento Kings for 33 points and 16 rebounds Wednesday.Embiid hopes to enjoy another big night Friday when the Philadelphia 76ers visit the New York Knicks, against whom they have won the last nine meetings. The 76ers are 5-1 in their last six games since consecutive losses at Orlando and Oklahoma City on Nov. 13-15. The one loss in the recent run was a 101-96 setback against the defending champions, when Embiid played 32 minutes without scoring while getting 13 rebounds. On Wednesday, things returned to normal in a 97-91 win over the Sacramento Kings, when Embiid had a double-double by halftime, posted his eighth game with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds and 15th game with at least 30 points and 15 rebounds since the start of last season."It wasn't about proving anything and it was about making the right plays," Embiid said. "In Toronto, I had zero points, but I felt like I did, in the circumstances at hand, what I was supposed to. I play for myself; I always play for my teammates, and I always play to win. Whatever it takes, that's what I'm going to do, and tonight it was a different story. I was a little freer and I took advantage of it." Philadelphia is 7-3 when Embiid gets a double-double, and he had three straight double-doubles before the Toronto game. One of those was a 23-point, 12-rebound showing Nov. 20, when the Sixers rallied from 17 points down in Philadelphia to get a 109-104 victory.Ben Simmons had 18 points and 13 assists in the last meeting with the Knicks and had 10 points and 14 rebounds Wednesday. He has eight double-doubles so far and the Sixers are 6-2 in those games.New York enters with 14 losses in first 18 games for the second straight season under coach David Fizdale, who seemingly was placed on notice when team president Steve Mills conducted a postgame press conference following a 108-87 home loss to Cleveland on Nov. 10. The Knicks are 2-6 in their last eight games and enter with a four-game losing streak after absorbing a 126-98 loss at Toronto on Wednesday. The Knicks began the streak with close losses to Philadelphia, San Antonio and Brooklyn but took their most lopsided loss of the season after taking an eight-point lead through the opening quarter. New York shot 37.5 percent and took a season-high 41 3-pointers with only 12 going in.The Knicks enter averaging a league-worst 101.8 points and following their latest loss, Fizdale questioned if his players are trusting each other on the court and if selfishness is taking place."Message to the team is trust," Fizdale said. "Right now, we're still fighting that fight to trust each other defensively and offensively. First quarter, you saw the ball move without hesitation. We get to the second quarter guys were holding the ball too long. They have to trust the easy play and the pass."Same thing defensively. If you get beat, you have to trust a guy will be there to protect you and the next guy is going to protect the next guy. It's something we haven't done through a full game. We're constantly fighting for that trust for 48 minutes." Fizdale's blunt assessment occurred after the Knicks trailed by 34 at one point, allowed a season-high 21 3-pointers and were torched by Pascal Siakam's 31 points.--Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 28, 2019An Eastern Conference matchup of teams on starkly contrasting trajectories pits the struggling Atlanta Hawks against the host Indiana Pacers on Friday.Atlanta has dropped eight in a row. Indiana won its fourth straight game, and eighth in the last 10, with a 121-102 rout of the Utah Jazz on Wednesday.Domantas Sabonis and T. J. Warren both scored 23 points, Malcolm Brogdon added 22 points, Jeremy Lamb scored 18 points and T. J. McConnell's 12 off the bench rounded out the Pacers' leading production. The balanced scoring effort offered a snapshot of the team's approach this season. Indiana comes into Friday's game boasting five players who average between 12.1 and 19 points per game, led by Brogdon.Indiana also has gotten plenty of contributions from its subs. Justin Holiday is averaging 7.6 points and 3.8 rebounds per game; Aaron Holiday is posting 9.9 points and 3.5 assists per game. McConnell is adding 7.4 points and 4.9 assists per game."That's just how our team is. We genuinely care about each other and genuinely are excited about someone else doing well, and that's the key to having a good team," Justin Holiday told the Indianapolis Star. "We all know I've played on a lot of teams, and not every team is like that." Atlanta's has gotten more of its scoring from second-year guard Trae Young, who comes in averaging 26.7 points per game. The Hawks have other scorers sharing the workload, with Jabari Parker putting up 17.8 points per game. Rookie De'Andre Hunter (12.1 ppg.) has also come alive in recent outings. But a difference in surging Indiana and sagging Atlanta is that the Hawks' contributions beyond the top three-to-four scorers decline steeply. While the Hawks rank 27th in the NBA in points allowed at 117.7 per game, coach Lloyd Pierce told 92.9 The Game in Atlanta that improving the offense is central to bolstering the defense."The offense takes care of itself, there's different ways to improve the defense," Pierce said. "If we take care of the basketball, create great shot opportunities, and make the opponent work on defense, that's our best defense, because it slows the game down for us and it slows them down offensively." On its current streak, Indiana is scoring 118.3 points per game -- an increasing of nine points per game over its season-long average. Three of the margins in this spell have been by at least 12 points. In contrast, six of the eight losses during Atlanta's ongoing skid have come by double-digit margins. The Hawks held a 10-point halftime team on Monday against Minnesota before losing by 12.Atlanta played Milwaukee within nine on Wednesday, paced by a 33-point, 14-rebound effort from Parker. However, giving up 39 bench points to the Bucks while getting just 14 points from the reserves made the difference.Atlanta's depth concerns have been compounded with the ongoing suspension of John Collins, who was averaging just under 18 points per game when he received a 25-game suspension earlier this month for violating the NBA's drug policy.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019INDIANOLIS When the Indiana Pacers finally asserted themselves after a sluggish half, the Atlanta Hawks’ Trae Young continually made shots to remind nothing would be easy.Young tied a career high with 49 points, but the host Pacers overcame an 11-point halftime deficit as well as being pushed an extra five minutes for a 105-104 overtime triumph over the Hawks on Friday night.T. J. Warren hit the go-ahead 3-pointer with 1:13 remaining for the Pacers, and Jeremy Lamb had 20 points and sparked a quick start in overtime with a 20-foot jumper and an assist on a Myles Turner 3-pointer.“It was just a little adversity,” Turner said. “I feel like we faced it well.”But back came the Hawks, trying to avoid a ninth consecutive loss, as Young scored eight of his team’s 10 points in overtime, including a pair of 3-pointers.“I guess it was good individually,” Young said, “but people who know me know I don’t care at all. If we don’t win, none of that matters. I didn’t do enough.”Young’s 49 points tied for the fourth-highest, single-game total in Bankers Life Fieldhouse history. He finished 16 of 28 from the floor, hitting 8 of 15 on 3-pointers.“The head of the snake, Trae Young, he was great tonight,” Lamb said. “He was great, but we were able to get enough stops.”Warren’s only 3-pointer broke a 99-all tie. He finished with 16 points.“We just kept grinding and finally got the lead late,” Pacers coach Nate McMillan said. “They found a way to get this game.”After two quarters, McMillan was scratching his head with the Pacers trailing 54-43.“I was thinking it was too much turkey,” he said. “We looked asleep in the first half.”Turner, who along with Domantas Sabonis scored 17 points, sensed his team would respond based on how they’ve played recently.“These past couple of games, we’ve started to come together a lot more,” he said. “We came back and responded well.”Warren and Malcomb Brogdon had 16. Brogdon had a chance to win the game in regulation but his last-second bank shot was long. The Hawks’ DeAndre’ Bembry and Alex Len added 15 points apiece off the bench.Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce wishes his team had the balance of the Pacers. Aside from Young, the rest of the Hawks shot just 35.6 percent (23 of 63).“We needed every bit of (Young’s), whatever number, 49, 48, whatever he ended up with, we needed every bit of that,” Pierce said. “However, we’ve got to balance that. We were playing him heavy minutes.”TIP-INSHawks: Forward Jabari Parker is averaging 17.8 points on 51.8%t shooting, one of just four NBA players to average 17 points with 20 3-pointers on 50%tshooting. ... Young became the franchise’s second-youngest player, at 21 years and 69 days, to reach 2,000 career points on Wednesday.Pacers: Brogdon is shooting a league-leading 96% at the line. ... GAME PREVIEW
Nov 28, 2019The New Orleans Pelicans and Oklahoma City Thunder have been rather generous of late and the results haven't been pretty. The struggling teams aim to tighten up defensively on Friday when they open a home-and-home series in Oklahoma City. The Pelicans and Thunder will reconvene in New Orleans on Sunday.Oklahoma City lost for the sixth time in eight games with Wednesday's 136-119 setback in Portland, a contest in which the Thunder fell behind 40-17 before finding themselves chasing the game the rest of the way."We have to be better and communicate better," guard Chris Paul said. "I think early in the game I was late in all my rotations. We have to be better and if we get better defensively, I think we'll start seeing different results." Oklahoma City was unable to build off a 100-97 victory over Golden State, one that snapped the club's three-game losing skid. Portland's fast start from the perimeter put the Thunder on the defensive."We have to be better," Oklahoma City coach Billy Donovan said. "I don't know if it was sluggish, but we just didn't play well enough." Abdel Nader might be the exception to that statement, as the 26-year-old scored a career-high 23 points on 7-of-9 shooting -- including a 3-of-4 performance from 3-point range -- while playing just 17 minutes off the bench.Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who is averaging a team-high 18.8 points, finished with just 11 on 4-of-10 shooting against the Trail Blazers."We play so many games in this league that you can't dwell on a bad game or a good game," the 21-year-old Gilgeous-Alexander said. "You always gotta put the game behind you and get ready for the next one." The next one is a rematch with the Pelicans, against whom Gilgeous-Alexander collected 23 points and eight rebounds in the Thunder's 115-104 victory on Oct. 2.New Orleans has answered winning three in a row by surrendering an average of 125.3 points during its three-game skid. The Pelicans also were generous to former franchise star Anthony Davis, who scored a season-high 41 points in the Los Angeles Lakers' 114-110 victory on Wednesday.New Orleans had a chance at the end, but Jrue Holiday's attempted inbounds pass to former Laker Brandon Ingram was intercepted by Davis in the waning moments to effectively end the game."I just didn't meet the basketball," the 22-year-old Ingram said. "I think I was a little lackadaisical getting open a little bit. He saw that I was open. I just didn't meet the basketball." Ingram overcame a porous 4-of-21 shooting performance to finish with 23 points, marking the eighth straight game he has eclipsed the 20-point plateau. Prior to that, Ingram had a seven-point effort against the Thunder before exiting midway into the second quarter with an injury.Despite the loss, Pelicans guard Kenrich Williams took a positive out of the contest."We learned that we can compete with anybody in the league, no matter if it is one of the teams in the league with the best record, or anybody," Williams said. "We can compete." --Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 28, 2019Ja Morant outplayed Mike Conley the first time the two point guards shared the court.Morant will look to get the better of the former Memphis star for the second time in two weeks when the Grizzlies host the Utah Jazz on Friday night.Morant, the No. 2 overall pick in this year's draft, had 25 points and eight assists while spoiling Conley's return to town on Nov. 15. He also scored the go-ahead basket in Memphis' 107-106 victory.Conley didn't fare as well against the organization in which he spent the previous 12 seasons before being traded in the offseason. He had 15 points on subpar 5-of-19 shooting. The 32-year-old Conley felt he got caught up in the hoopla of his first visit back. He indicated he spent too much time meeting old friends and fielding questions from the media. In the aftermath, he said it would be different on the second trip back to Memphis."Next time I come back, it truly is all business," Conley said. "I'm not going to be talking to everybody." Conley will hope he can rediscover his shot on those familiar rims inside FedExForum. He is averaging 7.3 points on 6-of-27 shooting over the past three games.Conley had just five points on 2-of-8 shooting in Wednesday's 121-102 loss to the Indiana Pacers. The setback dropped the Jazz to 0-2 on a five-game trip.Meanwhile, Memphis hasn't won since the dramatic victory over the Jazz. The losing streak reached five with Wednesday's 121-119 home loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. The Grizzlies held a 10-point lead with 6:48 remaining before letting it slip away."We have to get better from it and we have to know this stuff is important for us to move forward and get better from it," Grizzlies coach Taylor Jenkins said after the defeat.Morant had 20 points and 11 assists against the Clippers for his second straight double-double and third of the season. The 20-year-old has scored 20 or more points in five of his past seven games. His court presence and flashy style have been a refreshing ingredient for the Grizzlies, who are rebuilding with Morant and forward Jaren Jackson Jr.Jackson has scored 20 or more points in three of the past five games. He tallied 17 against the Clippers but was just 5-of-17 shooting and missed two 3-pointers in the final 33 seconds, including an attempt that was blocked with 0.2 seconds to play."I have to do better with it," Jackson said afterward. "Two straight times I didn't get it done. Once I get it done I'll probably have a better reaction to it. I'm happy they go to me but I've got to finish the job for them." Memphis center Jonas Valanciunas starred against the Clippers with season highs of 30 points and 16 rebounds for his 10th double-double of the season.Utah will look to put forth a better effort on the third stop of its trip after allowing an average of 121.5 points in losses to the Milwaukee Bucks and Pacers. The Jazz typically pride themselves on defense, but it was in short supply against Indiana, which scored 32 or more points in each of the final three quarters."We need to be better," Utah coach Quin Snyder told reporters. "I thought they were the more aggressive team and that showed by the way they attacked the basket." Jazz shooting guard Donovan Mitchell scored 26 points and he has exceeded 25 in six of the past eight games.Utah center Rudy Gobert (ankle) returned from a two-game absence and had 14 points and 13 rebounds against the Pacers. The Grizzlies have won four of the past five meetings.--Field Level Media

Donovan Mitchell added 20 points, and Rudy Gobert had 13 points, 13 rebounds and a pair of blocks.Jonas Valanciunas led Memphis with 22 points and 17 rebounds, and Brandon Clarke scored 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting. The Grizzlies have lost six straight. The Jazz led 75-73 entering the fourth and depended on Bogdanovic in the final frame. Each time Memphis got within one possession, Bogdanovic scored to prevent the Grizzlies' comeback.Memphis saw a 15-point halftime lead evaporate quickly as the Jazz scored the first 12 points of the third quarter, the Grizzlies going almost four minutes without scoring against a much more active Jazz defense. The run would reach 16-2, allowing Utah to retake the lead. The game would level into a tight contest the rest of the third. The Grizzlies used a strong second quarter to build a double-digit lead as the Jazz struggled from the field. Utah was limited to 31% overall and 4 of 17 from outside the arc in the first half. Mitchell had 10 points, but was 4 of 12 from the field.Clarke had 11 for Memphis, hitting all four of his shots, while Valanciunas had 10 as Memphis carried a 55-40 lead into the break.TIP-INSJazz: Mitchell had scored at least 25 points in six of his previous eight games before recording 20 against Memphis. ... GAME PREVIEW
Nov 28, 2019The Miami Heat have been surprisingly good. The Golden State Warriors have been shockingly bad, especially given their championship lineage. On Friday night, these two teams will meet in Miami, where the Heat are 7-0 this season. Only three other NBA teams are still unbeaten at home this season."This is a step in the right direction," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said after Miami's most recent home win, a 117-100 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Monday. "Guys are taking (home court) to heart." The Warriors, who have won five straight Western Conference titles and also won three NBA championships during that span, have slumped this season to 4-15, which is the worst record in the league.Injuries and a major defection have hit the Warriors hard. Kevin Durant bolted as a free agent shortly after last season. Klay Thompson is likely out for the season due to a knee injury. Stephen Curry is inactive due to a broken left hand. And D'Angelo Russell is out due to an injured right thumb. But the Warriors got good news on Wednesday when Draymond Green returned after a three-game injury absence (right heel), contributing seven points, eight assists and five rebounds in a 104-90 home win over the Chicago Bulls."Having Draymond back is a big deal," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said of Green, who is known as Golden State's vocal, spiritual and emotional on-court leader. "Having nine instead of eight (players) matters. We have more options." Right now, Golden State's starting options include Green and rookie Eric Paschall at forward, 7-footer Willie Cauley-Stein at center, point guard Alec Burks and wing Glenn Robinson III.The Warriors bench consists of rookie shooting guard and first-round pick Jordan Pool, undrafted rookie point guard Ky Bowman, second-year forward Omari Spellman and veteran power forward Marquese Chriss.Of those nine players, eight of them are new to the Warriors this season -- everyone except for Green. Given the injuries and the roster upheaval, it's been a rocky start. But Friday marks the start of a five-game East Coast road trip. It's a new opportunity to bond and iron out any chemistry issues. One thing is for sure: Golden State still has tremendous pride despite its last-place record."The names have changed," Bulls coach Jim Boylen said. "But their soul and their spirit and the way they compete have not changed at all." Paschall, a second-round pick out of Villanova, leads Golden State's active players in scoring (17.0), and he had a team-high 25 points against Chicago on Wednesday.Spellman, who won a national title at Villanova in 2018 and was a first-round pick (30th overall) by Atlanta last year, had a double-double off the bench on Wednesday: 13 points and 11 rebounds.Meanwhile, the big question surrounding the Heat on Friday is whether Jimmy Butler can play. The talented wing missed Wednesday's 117-108 loss at the Houston Rockets due to an illness.Butler leads Miami in scoring (18.9), assists (6.7) and steals (2.6).The good news for the Heat is that Miami got point forward Justise Winslow (concussion) back on Wednesday, when he had 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Prior to Wednesday, he had not played since Nov. 5.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019MIAMI A big lead had almost entirely slipped away, and the Miami Heat showed no sense of panic. With good reason.A 27-8 third-quarter run allowed the Heat to pull away and beat the Golden State Warriors 122-105 on Friday night. Goran Dragic scored 20 points, Tyler Herro added 19 and the Heat remained perfect at home - 8-0, tying the franchise's best home start to a season.''Being able to weather the storm is big,'' Herro said. ''It's a game of runs.'' Duncan Robinson scored 17 for Miami. Robinson and Herro were a combined 10 for 13 from 3-point range.Jimmy Butler scored 16, while Kendrick Nunn - who was with the Warriors' G League team last year - and Kelly Olynyk each had 15 for the Heat.''We're trying to build a consistent game,'' Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.Jordan Poole scored 20 for injury-ravaged Golden State, which was playing the opener of a five-game road trip. Eric Paschall scored 17 and Alec Burks finished with 16 for the Warriors. The Warriors are one of four teams without back-to-back wins this season, joining Chicago, Detroit and New York. They were down 20 after the first quarter, then clawed within 13 by halftime and eventually as little as six midway through the third quarter - before Miami recovered to put the game away with the 27-8 run over an eight-minute stretch.Draymond Green played only 19 minutes for Golden State, and Warriors coach Steve Kerr said he'll be on a minutes restriction going forward. The Warriors' injury woes - no Stephen Curry, no Klay Thompson, no D'Angelo Russell and more - have left them an NBA-worst 4-16.''We're obviously playing for the future, playing for next year and he needs to be out on the floor to help guide these young players,'' Kerr said. ''I know he wants to be out on the floor. So we've got to find the balance between allowing him to make his impact with this team and not wearing him down at the same time.'' Miami's lead was 82-75 after Poole made a pair of free throws with 4:37 left in the third. That's when the Heat took off, Herro connecting on a 30-footer to end the big run and give Miami a 109-83 lead with 8:40 left.It was the third home game this season that Miami has won without trailing. Opponents have led for 29:54 of a possible 384 minutes on the Heat home floor - just 7.8% of the time. The Heat have led for 339 of those minutes.TIP-INSWarriors: Golden State lost the first quarter 41-21 and has been outscored by 20 or more points in the opening period three times in its last 17 games. Before that, it happened three times in a span of 1,102 Warriors' regular-season contests. ... Kevon Looney (neuropathy) missed his 19th consecutive game, but the Warriors hope to have him back as early as Monday's game in Atlanta.Heat: Miami has led by at least 15 points in all eight of its home games - and didn't take long to extend that streak Friday, opening the game on a 21-6 run. ... This was the 10th and final game of Dion Waiters' suspension for conduct detrimental to the team, but the Heat have not revealed what's next. A conditioning period seems possible, and it's unclear if Waiters will fly with the team Saturday to start a three-game trip.ONLY TWOOf the 10 players on the court last season when Dwyane Wade made a desperation 3-pointer with no time left to beat the Warriors, only two played Friday. For the Warriors, Kevin Durant is in Brooklyn, Andre Iguodala is technically with Memphis, Jordan Bell is with Minnesota, and Curry and Thompson are injured. For the Heat, Waiters is suspended, Josh Richardson is with Philadelphia and Wade is retired. That leaves Kelly Olynyk and Justise Winslow, who played off Miami's bench.70, AGAINMiami had 71 points in the first half, making this the first month in team history with three games at least 70 by intermission. The others: a franchise-record-tying 75 against Cleveland on Nov. 20, and 71 against Houston on Nov. 3.UP NEXTWarriors: Visit Orlando on Sunday.Heat: Visit Brooklyn on Sunday.---More NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 28, 2019Kawhi Leonard will return to San Antonio for just the second time in the past two years when the Spurs host the new-look Los Angeles Clippers on Friday. The Spurs have bigger concerns than worrying just about Leonard, once the Alamo City's favorite son before a trade to Toronto last year and his free-agent signing with the Clippers before the season.San Antonio has lost 10 of its past 11 games including Wednesday's 113-101 setback at home to Minnesota. The Spurs (6-13) have gone 2-11 since beginning the season 4-2. San Antonio has dropped two straight since snapping an eight-game losing streak, its longest since the 1996-97 season, on the road last Saturday against the Knicks.Wednesday's loss, San Antonio's fifth straight at home, was doomed by a 5-of-29 shooting performance from 3-point territory and poor defense in the final quarter. LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan led the Spurs' scoring with 22 and 20 points, respectively."Both teams are going to make mistakes defensively, but we have to be perfect defensively if we are going to shoot like that," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "I felt (the players') effort was really good, and they got physical and we got after it." One of the highlights for San Antonio in the loss to Minnesota was the play of second-year guard Lonnie Walker IV, who scored a season-high 11 points."Lonnie was fantastic," Popovich said. "He has kept himself ready and we gave him a shot to play tonight and, obviously, he was up to the challenge. He did a really good job." The Clippers head to the Alamo City on the heels of a 121-119 win in Memphis on Wednesday that was accomplished without Leonard, who continues to sit out the second half of back-to-back games to protect his left knee.It was the seventh straight win for the Clippers (14-5).Los Angeles trailed by 10 points midway through the fourth quarter but rallied with crucial 3-pointers by Paul George and Patrick Beverley, before Montrezl Harrell tipped in the game-winner with 2.3 seconds remaining. The Clippers battled back behind their reserves as Harrell had 24 points and 10 rebounds, and Lou Williams scored 24 points."It's just fantastic," Clippers coach Doc Rivers said about having Harrell and Williams off his bench. "It's like you have the ultimate relief pitchers coming in the game." George added 22 points, highlighted by his second 3-pointer of the final 4:10 that gave Los Angeles its first lead of the fourth quarter."We don't panic, we run our stuff," Rivers said. "We're a gritty basketball team. I just thought you let a team (the Grizzlies) that hasn't been winning hang around, they start to smell it. We talked about it before the game. Obviously, no one heard it." The Clippers complete a three-game road trip in San Antonio on Friday night. The Spurs own a 128-43 all-time edge on Los Angeles, but the Clippers defeated San Antonio 103-97 in L. GAME RECAP
Nov 30, 2019SAN ANTONIO This trip looked a lot like Kawhi Leonard’s last game in San Antonio.LaMarcus Aldridge and Derrick White each had 17 points, and the Spurs beat Leonard and the Los Angeles Clippers 107-97 on Friday night.“They wanted it more and it showed tonight,” Clippers guard Patrick Beverly said. “You’ve got to congratulate them. They came in here with an edge, with more of a thirst, and it showed.”The Spurs stopped the Clippers’ seven-game win streak in Leonard’s second appearance in San Antonio as an opponent. Leonard finished with 19 points on 8-for-23 shooting.“This wasn’t just any old team,” San Antonio’s DeMar DeRozan said. “It’s a high-caliber team in our conference. We went out there and compete, compete, compete and the outcome came out our way.”San Antonio had lost two straight and 12 of 14, but it found its footing against Los Angeles and its former teammate.Leonard spent his first seven seasons in San Antonio before demanding a trade. He was shipped off to Toronto and won his second NBA Finals MVP last season before joining the Clippers as a free agent.Leonard’s initial return to San Antonio on Jan. 24 resulted in thunderous boos and a 125-107 loss for the Raptors. Friday’s game had a similar feel.“Uhm, didn’t make nothing of it,” Leonard said of the reception. “Felt like a normal away game.”It may have been routine for Leonard, but it was an exception for the Spurs (7-13) in their worst start in 23 seasons.“Everybody, right down the line, everybody was aggressive, picking up the way we need to,” San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. “We just need to do it more often and get more consistent.”Leonard received a chorus of boos during pregame introductions and whenever he touched the ball. The level of vitriol increased throughout the game, especially with the Spurs having by far their best game of the season.Leonard missed his first three shots before collecting a steal at the free-throw line and sprinting down court for an uncontested dunk as the Clippers led by as many as eight points in the first quarter.Marco Belinelli helped the Spurs move in front, making a 3-pointer and a no-look pass to Trey Lyles for a 32-30 lead with 11 minutes remaining in the first half.“We had a couple stretches tonight where we just put runs together,” Spurs center Jakob Poeltl said. “Really came out strong with energy on the defensive end. Then all of a sudden, the shots start falling and it really got us going.”Poeltl, who was acquired by San Antonio in the Leonard deal, continued the momentum with four points and three blocks in a pivotal run in the second quarter, including two blocks on Leonard that drew deafening cheers.“Whenever one guy hustles, makes a big play, that ignites us on the bench and on the floor and gets our crowd going,” said DeRozan, who also came over in the Leonard trade.Patty Mills’ 3-pointer with 10:32 remaining gave the Spurs an 81-71 lead, prompting a timeout from the Clippers. The Spurs made five 3-pointers in the final quarter, going 14 for 36 from beyond the arc for the game.DeRozan had 15 points, and Poeltl had six points, six rebounds and four blocked shots.Paul George had a season-low five points on 2-for-11 shooting for the Clippers.INSULT TO INJURYClippers coach Doc Rivers was locked out of the locker room after finishing his postgame press conference.“Fitting,” Rivers deadpanned. “That’s the kind of night it’s been for us.”KEEP SHOOTINGPopovich has encouraged White to shoot 3-pointers even though he has struggled at times this season. White responded with a career-high five on 5-for-7 shooting from deep.“I think I’m going to take like 20 next game,” White said. “Just try to get the looks that I get, let it fly, shoot with confidence.”TIP-INSClippers: Landry Shamet missed his 10th straight game with a sprained left ankle. Shamet, who has started all 10 games he has played, is averaging 9.1 points in 29.4 minutes.Spurs: The Spurs played their 700th game at the AT&T Center since it opened in 2002. They have the most wins at home of any team during that span with 564 victories.UP NEXTClippers: Host Washington on Saturday night.Spurs: At Detroit on Saturday night.---More NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 28, 2019Mavericks look to get back on track vs. SunsTwo teams that have moved up in the Western Conference pecking order this season hope to rebound from significant setbacks when the Dallas Mavericks oppose the host Phoenix Suns on Friday night. The Mavericks floundered in their rare shot in the national spotlight Tuesday in a 114-99 home drubbing at the hands of the Los Angeles Clippers. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak. One night later, the Suns fell under .500 for the first time this season with a 140-132 home disappointment against the Washington Wizards. The defeat was Phoenix's second straight and fifth in six games. The Friday game features a Dallas team that had put up 142, 143 and 137 points in its three contests immediately prior to Tuesday's debacle, and a Phoenix club that has allowed 116 or more in four of its past five games, topped by the Wizards' 140-point effort. The Suns' defensive skid has coincided with the loss of defensive-minded big man Aron Baynes to a hip injury. The veteran had been filling in for Deandre Ayton, who just recently passed the midpoint of his 25-game suspension.Suns coach Monty Williams inferred that changes could be in store, especially if Baynes, as expected, has to miss a sixth straight game Friday. The coach also threw himself under the bus for the defensive issues."Our defense, knowing who's hot, getting a hand up on guys who shoot 3-point shots ... That's inexcusable," he said after the Wednesday game. "A lot of it's on me. I have to get the guys and keep the guys in the game who are going to play the right way and bring the type of intensity we need to have in this organization." Mavericks star Luka Doncic had a similar reaction after the Tuesday loss to the Clippers. Only he didn't verbalize it until a day later. He was already on the freeway by the time the media was allowed in the Dallas locker room after the game."Not feeling great. I was (upset)," he said Wednesday of his early departure. "You just have to get through it. When we lose a game like this and I have a bad game, I feel like I let everybody down and I want to be alone."Next day, it's all better." Doncic had 22 points in the loss, but he missed 10 of his 14 shots, including all eight of his 3-point attempts. His seven turnovers more than offset six assists. The Mavericks and Suns will be meeting for the first time this season. They split their four-game series last year, with the home team winning every game by double figures.Doncic and the Suns' young star, Devin Booker, will be going head-to-head for just the second time. They faced off in the teams' first meeting last season, with Booker getting the better of Doncic 35-10 in scoring in Phoenix's 121-100 home win. That contest was Doncic's NBA debut. With Booker out of action, Doncic rebounded with 30- and 21-point efforts in Dallas' two home wins later in the season, adding 16 rebounds and 11 assists for a triple-double in a 120-109 victory on April 9.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 30, 2019PHOENIX Luka Doncic was in total control, getting into the lane when he wanted, getting the shots he wanted and getting the ball to teammates in places where they could do some damage.Because of that, the Dallas Mavericks got the result they wanted with an 120-113 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Friday night.Doncic tied a career high with 42 points, Tim Hardaway Jr. added 26 and the Mavericks bounced back from a disappointing loss to the Los Angeles Clippers three days earlier.''Great players have a short memory for tough games,'' Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said about Doncic's big night. ''They move forward. They're always thinking ahead and about the next challenge. He was spectacular tonight from start to finish.'' The second-year guard just missed a triple-double with 11 assists and nine rebounds. Hardaway shot 6 of 9 from 3-point range to help offset a quiet night from Kristaps Porzingis, who finished with two points. The teams entered the final quarter tied at 89. The Mavericks went on an 8-0 run midway through the fourth to take a 104-97 lead and never trailed again.Doncic was coming off a subpar outing Tuesday night in a loss to the Clippers, where he shot 4 of 14 from the field and missed all eight 3-point attempts. The 20-year-old was superb in Phoenix, making 12 of 24 shots from the field and 15 of 18 free throws. He said he didn't get too low after the Clippers loss and was no more motivated than normal on Friday, even if his performance suggested he had a little extra fire.''It's just one game - we lost one game,'' Doncic said. ''We shouldn't be worried about that. You go to the next game and pretend like nothing happened. I'm anxious to go out there every night. I'm excited about every game. That's me.'' Phoenix has lost six of its last seven games. Kelly Oubre Jr. led the Suns with 22 points and 10 rebounds, and Ricky Rubio added 21 points and nine assists.''We didn't play our game the last quarter,'' Rubio said. ''I think we got focused on the wrong things, things we can't control.'' Doncic had 14 points, six rebounds and six assists in the first quarter as the Mavericks edged to a 53-50 halftime lead. Oubre had 13 for the Suns.EMOTIONAL SUNSFriday's game was entertaining and a little emotional, with a handful of moments where Suns and Mavericks players had to be separated.Phoenix coach Monty Williams said his team struggled with composure.''Both teams were pretty emotional tonight,'' Williams said. ''But I just felt like it affected us more.'' HARDAWAY'S BIG NIGHTCarlisle recently moved Hardaway into the starting lineup and the 6-foot-5 guard has responded with a string of big games. Over the past two weeks, he's had 16 points against Cleveland, 31 against Houston and now 26 against the Suns.''It's seizing the opportunity and being prepared,'' Hardaway said.A FREE THROW ADVENTURESuns forward Frank Kaminsky inadvertently contributed to a rally with two of the worst free throws of his professional career.Kaminsky - a respectable 76% career free throw shooter - had a stunning air ball on his first of two free throws during the third quarter. He overcompensated on the second, pounding it off the backboard and rim before getting his own offensive rebound. The extra possession led to a huge dunk by Devin Booker to put the Suns up 69-63.TIP-INSMavericks: Porzingis and Phoenix's Aron Baynes both received technical fouls in the second quarter when they got into an argument coming off the court during a timeout. ... Doncic averaged a 30-point triple-double in November, becoming just the third NBA to accomplish that feat in a calendar month, joining Oscar Robertson (five times) and Russell Westbrook (twice). ... The Mavericks improved to 12-6 for their best start since the 2010-11 season when they won an NBA title. ... Porzingis missed all eight shots he took from the field, including six 3-pointers.Suns: Baynes returned to the lineup after a five-game absence because of a right hip flexor sprain. He finished with 17 points and seven rebounds in 25 minutes. ... Phoenix fell to 8-10.UP NEXTMavericks: At Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday.Suns: At Charlotte on Monday night.---More NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 29, 2019The Chicago Bulls continue a four-game road trip with a visit to Portland on Friday to play the Trail Blazers for the second time this week. The Bulls, who suffered a 14-point loss to the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday, lost to Portland 117-94 at United Center on Monday thanks to a season-high 25 points from Carmelo Anthony. The Blazers' newest addition continued his stellar play in a win over Oklahoma City on Wednesday, posting 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting. Anthony's performance drew chants of "Melo" from the crowd as the Blazers moved to 2-0 with Anthony in a fully healthy starting lineup."It's fun to see," Damian Lillard told reporters after the blowout win. "We've got another mega star, a Hall of Famer ... and the fans are excited about it, as they should be. I think it's a point in his career where he needs that type of support. He needs people behind him and to feel good about what he's doing. So it was great to witness. We all want to be a part of his comeback. We want to see it work out. We want to see him get the respect that he's due. So to see how the crowd responded to him, it's really good to see and be a part of." Portland has won two games by 20 points or more with a starting lineup of Lillard, CJ McCollum, Rodney Hood, Anthony and Hassan Whiteside. The Bulls will aim to slow down the Blazers' offensive production after falling by double digits to the short-handed Warriors.Lillard leads Portland with 27.3 points and 7.4 assists per game. Chicago is led by Zach LaVine, who is averaging 21.8 points per game this season. While the Bulls await the return of Otto Porter Jr. from a bone bruise in his left foot, the Blazers still will be without Jusuf Nurkic (leg) and Zach Collins (shoulder) for a few months. Gary Trent Jr. is nursing a hamstring injury and has missed Portland's last few contests.Bulls coach Jim Boylen told reporters the loss to the Warriors involved "no shame" despite being one of the low points of his team's season. Wendell Carter Jr. disagreed."Nah, it's some shame in this loss," Carter told reporters. "In my opinion, it's some shame in every loss -- especially to a very hurt and wounded Warriors team. I'm brutally honest. We should have won that game. Just looking at paper and looking at the players on the court, we should have won that game. No disrespect to them, because they're fantastic players. But we just didn't show up and play." --Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 29, 2019Lakers go for 10 straight vs. WizardsNo NBA team is hotter than the Los Angeles Lakers. Anthony Davis is a big reason why.The 6-foot-10 forward and the Lakers will attempt to extend their sizzling run Friday when they host the Washington Wizards. The Lakers are riding a nine-game winning streak after Davis scored 41 points and grabbed nine rebounds in a 114-110 win over his former team, the New Orleans Pelicans, on Wednesday night. It was the first matchup between the two clubs since the Pelicans traded Davis to the Lakers for Brandon Ingram, Lonzo Ball, Josh Hart and draft picks."Anytime you go back to a place where you've made a mark and you started your career and you've played significant minutes and gave a lot to the community and gave a lot to the franchise, you want to come back and play well and you want to win," said LeBron James, who finished with 29 points, 11 assists and five rebounds in the victory, according to the Orange County Register.A late steal and three free throws by Davis in the final seconds allowed the Lakers to capture their 16th win in 17 games."He performed unbelievably," Lakers coach Frank Vogel said of Davis. "It was a tough environment, getting booed every time he touched the basketball, playing against a bunch of guys that know him, playing against a coach that knows him. And he put all that stuff aside, blocked out the noise and rose to the challenge and had a great game." Davis has been crucial to the Lakers' run. He averages 26.1 points, nine rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. In his past five contests, Davis has averaged 29.8 points. The six-time All-Star leads the league in blocks at 2.8 per game and is tied for ninth in steals at 1.6 per game. The Wizards also are coming off a win, a 140-132 decision over the Suns in Phoenix on Wednesday. Bradley Beal scored 35 points on 11-of-18 shooting, including 4 of 6 treys, while Thomas Bryant, a former Laker, added 23 points and nine rebounds for the Wizards, the NBA's second highest scoring team at 119.4 points per outing behind the Milwaukee Bucks.Ish Smith scored 21 points and recorded seven assists off the bench. The Wizards bounced back after a 117-104 loss to the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday, a result that prompted Washington coach Scott Brooks to criticize his team's performance."It's probably the first time he's done it all year," said Beal, the NBA's fourth-leading scorer at 28.9 points per game, according to the Washington Post. "It was definitely well needed for everybody." The Friday game will feature another reunion of former Lakers. Moritz Wagner and Isaac Bonga were traded to Washington last summer to clear cap room to acquire Davis. Point guard Isaiah Thomas played 17 games for Los Angeles during the 2017-18 season.Wagner has been a key reserve, averaging 12.3 points for the Wizards' second unit, which is averaging 48.3 points per game. That ranks second in the NBA, with only the Los Angeles Clippers (52.7 points game game) getting more from their bench."We've got playmakers," said forward Davis Bertans, who scored 16 of the Wizards' 59 points by the reserves in the win over the Suns, according to the Post. "We get in the lane and have shooters, so I think that's good for us." --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 30, 2019LOS ANGELES Anthony Davis had 26 points and 13 rebounds, and LeBron James had 23 points and 11 assists before both superstars took the fourth quarter off in the Los Angeles Lakers’ 10th consecutive victory, 125-103 over the Washington Wizards on Friday night.Quinn Cook scored 17 points and JaVale McGee had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the steamrolling Lakers, who have won 17 of 18 to soar to the top of the overall NBA standings. Los Angeles went 14-1 in November, posting the most victories in a month for this 16-time champion franchise since March 2000.The up-tempo Wizards have been one of the NBA’s worst defensive teams this season, and the Lakers’ dynamic offense was far too much for them.Los Angeles outscored Washington 84-36 during a 24-minute span extending from midway through the first quarter until James’ jumper midway through the third put the Lakers up 88-51. LA made runs of 17-0 and 18-0 during that one-sided stretch, showing off the remarkable chemistry already established in just the 19th game of the season for this newly minted superteam.Bradley Beal had 18 points and nine assists for the Wizards, who have lost three of four. Washington got off to a solid start and had several good stretches against the Lakers, but committed 19 turnovers and lost for the second time in three stops on a four-game West Coast road trip.Washington actually opened with a 15-4 lead before the Lakers woke up and put together 24 minutes of dominance.Los Angeles jumped to a 21-point lead at halftime with 19 points from Davis, and the Lakers poured it on with an 18-0 run early in the third quarter, eventually taking a 90-51 lead with 7:15 left in the third quarter. The Lakers topped 100 points with 2:42 left in the third and cruised in from there.Isaiah Thomas scored 10 points to lead the four former Lakers on Washington’s roster. Moe Wagner had seven points and eight rebounds, and the German big man also committed a flagrant foul on Dwight Howard, who responded by hitting both free throws and then dunking on Wagner’s head on the ensuing possession.Wagner eventually went to the locker room favoring his left ankle with several minutes to play.DWIGHT’S REUNIONHoward had eight points, five rebounds and two blocked shots in his reunion with the Wizards, who signed him in July 2018. Howard played in just nine early games for Washington before a spinal injury forced him to miss the rest of the season, and his resulting long offseason of inactivity and soul-searching led to his decision to become a role player with the Lakers.Washington coach Scott Brooks has been impressed by Howard’s evolution, saying Howard has been “exactly what” the Wizards hoped he would be for them: “Unfortunately, he was hurt. I have nothing bad to say about him. He worked hard for us, but just unfortunately didn’t have the health to make a difference for us.”TIP-INSWizards: G C. J. Miles is out until at least next week with a left wrist ligament injury. He also missed Thursday’s game at Phoenix. Brooks didn’t speculate on the severity of the injury. ... Brooks’ jersey will be retired at UC Irvine on Saturday. The Northern California native spent two high-scoring seasons with the Anteaters from 1985-87 before his decade as an NBA player. “It’s humbling,” Brooks said. “It’s awesome. I love Irvine. It’s a terrific school.”Lakers: Avery Bradley will be re-evaluated this weekend in his return from a hairline fracture in his right leg. The veteran has missed eight games. ... Kyle Kuzma limped off the court at the third-quarter buzzer badly favoring his right ankle. He returned to the game for the fourth, but left for the locker room later in the quarter.UP NEXTWizards: Stay in town to face the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday.Lakers: Host the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.---More NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 29, 2019No. 5 Maryland will try to remain unbeaten when it plays Harvard for the first time in the Orlando Invitational semifinals on Friday. The Terrapins (6-0) needed to rally late for a 76-69 victory over Temple in a quarterfinal matchup.Harvard (5-2) topped Texas A&M 62-51 in another Thursday quarterfinal.Maryland senior guard Anthony Cowan Jr. led the way against the Owls by scoring a career-best 30 points and hitting 11 of 19 field-goal attempts.Cowan nailed a crucial 3-pointer from the left corner as Maryland took the lead in the back-and-forth game in the final minutes before pulling away. That was the most points a Terrapins player had scored in a game since Melo Trimble posted 32 against Northwestern on Feb. 15, 2017.Cowan and Eric Ayala came up big in the final minutes to help the Terrapins gain control against a stubborn Temple team."The bottom line is it's about winning," Maryland coach Mark Turgeon told the media. "We've figured out every game how to win. I was really proud of our guys this early in the season to execute the way we did down the stretch." As for Cowan, his 30 points pushed him past Derrick Lewis into 18th place in scoring in Maryland history. Cowan now has 1,470 points and also is ninth all-time with 464 assists. The 6-0 start is Maryland's fifth in the last six seasons. The Terps last made it to 7-0 three years ago and are trying to do it for the fourth time under Turgeon. The last time the Terrapins played an Ivy League team was nearly four years ago against Princeton.Harvard advanced at Orlando thanks to Justin Bassey's 16 points and Bryce Aiken's 15 against Texas A&M.The Crimson also helped their cause by sinking all 22 free throws as they grinded out a tough victory. Harvard built a 12-point lead and was able to hang on."Neither team played a pretty form of basketball, but it was gritty and it was tough, and I thought our kids were on the winning side of that," Harvard coach Tommy Amaker said after the game. "We probably made more of those plays, and we needed to." The Aggies shot just 31.4 percent against Harvard, but the Crimson made only 32.1 percent of their shots.Forward Robert Baker had just two points but pulled down 13 rebounds, a big reason Harvard held a 40-30 boards edge over the Aggies.Amaker said of the challenge of opposing Maryland, "It's obvious where they are ranked and the players that they have. They had a tough game earlier (Thursday), and we had a tough game. ... We expect them, obviously, to be at their best. They are playing for an opportunity to win a championship this early in the year, so we expect an outstanding team, which is what they are."We need to turn this around and get some rest real fast. They are an explosive team, they have all the pieces to the puzzle to be arguably a Final Four team. Senior point guard, big man inside, wing players that are physical and strong. We're going to need our best effort to have a chance to compete with this team." --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. No. 5 Maryland is answering the challenge against stronger competition in the Orlando Invitational.Coach Mark Turgeon's just wondering what it'll take to get Terrapins (7-0) going a little earlier in games, regardless of who they're playing.''I think we've beaten two NCAA tournament-type teams down here so far, and we get to play for a championship on Sunday,'' Turgeon said after Friday's 80-73 victory over Harvard in the semifinals of the eight-team tournament at Disney World.''I'm disappointed in myself that I can't get our team to play better at the start,'' the coach added. ''I don't what know it is. If I knew what it was, I'd have it corrected. ''Anthony Cowan Jr. scored 17 of his 20 points in the second half, and the persistent Terps gradually overcome another slow start to begin a season with seven straight wins for the first time under Turgeon.Cowan followed up on a 30-point performance in the previous day's come-from-behind win over Temple with 10 points and an assist during a 12-4 burst that sparked a game-closing surge for the Terps, who also got the job done defensively by holding Harvard (5-3) without a field goal for a six-minute stretch of the second half while Maryland was taking control.Jalen Smith had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Aaron Wiggins, Darryl Morsell and Eric Ayala scored 13 apiece for the Terps, who will play Marquette or USC for the championship.''I thought (Thursday) we really had energy. Today we had nothing,'' Turgeon said. ''We're a rah-rah team in the dressing room, a rah-rah team when we're stretching. I thought we were ready. We just didn't share the ball enough. I just want our guys to play a little more unselfishly at the start and I think we'll be a better team.'' Bryce Aiken led Harvard with 30 points, but the Crimson missed 18 of 26 attempts from behind the 3-point arc and didn't have enough muscle or firepower to hold off the Terps after leading by as many as 11 in the opening half. Noah Kirkwood finished with 12 points and Robert Baker had 11.''Bryce can score with the best of them,'' Harvard coach Tommy Amaker said. ''He had a pretty efficient offensive game, but he can be better than that, certainly in other areas of quarterbacking our team and leading our team.'' Amaker was impressed with Maryland, which - despite slow starts being a recurring theme - won its first five games by no fewer than 18 points.''The key word for me, and I think all good teams have this, is balance,'' Amaker said. ''I think they have a lot of pieces to the puzzle.'' THE TAKEAWAYMaryland: The Terps fell behind 9-0 in the opening minutes and trailed 35-31 at halftime. They also overcame a slow start against Temple on Thursday, but found a way to win despite not shooting well from the line. In addition to turning the ball over 16 times, the Terps made just 25 of 40 free throws.Harvard: The Crimson would have led by more at halftime if they hadn't gone 1 of 10 on 3-point attempts. After going 22 for 22 from the line in beating Texas A&M in the first round, Harvard only shot 17 free throws against Maryland, making 10.UP NEXTMaryland: Plays Marquette or USC in Sunday's championship game.Harvard: Plays the loser of the Marquette-USC semifinal for third place Sunday.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 29, 2019No. 6 North Carolina and No. 11 Oregon face a quick turnaround Friday when they meet in the third-place game of the Battle 4 Atlantis at Imperial Arena at Paradise Island, Bahamas. The 11:30 a.m. local time tip-off actually sounded good to North Carolina coach Roy Williams, who said he can't wait to try to have the Tar Heels play better."I've got to do a better job of getting the attention to detail taken care of a lot better and the toughness a lot better," Williams said. "And get the ball to go in the basket for us." North Carolina (5-1) is coming off Thursday's 73-64 loss to Michigan in the tournament semifinals. Oregon (6-1) suffered a 73-72 overtime loss to No. 8 Gonzaga in the second semifinal.Oregon will be facing a nationally ranked the team for the third time in three days. The Ducks rallied from a 19-point hole to defeat Seton Hall on Wednesday night.Ducks coach Dana Altman had pointed out the energy level for his team could be zapped after the Seton Hall game. Now, it could be a more extreme situation following an overtime game in which Oregon trailed Gonzaga at one point by 17 points."You just can't do that on a consistent basis," Altman said of the large deficits.Williams has been critical of his team during the opening weeks of the season. He took a partially different approach when looking at the big picture following the first loss of the season."This team has a chance to be a really good team," Williams said. "I really believe that." Yet Williams gave a critical self-assessment after six games."I've got to do a better job coaching my team," he said. "It's frustrating as all get-out, but I've been in the game a long time and it still pisses me off when I don't do a good job with my team so that's the bottom line." Michigan used a 19-0 run in the second half to produce a big margin."We just didn''t play team defense great," North Carolina swingman Brandon Robinson said. "It's not just the people on the ball guarding the screens, it's everyone on the court. We didn't do a good job of that." North Carolina's perimeter shooting has been troublesome. The Tar Heels were a season-low 2 of 13 on 3-point attempts in the loss to Michigan, which held North Carolina to its lowest point total of the season."I think we will make a lot 3s, but we haven't done it yet in games so it doesn't make any difference what I think," Williams said.Oregon has had problems with offense, too. The Ducks shot 34 percent against Gonzaga."It's on me to get them moving the ball better," Altman said. "Our offense has got to be much more efficient." In the meantime, a North Carolina opponent has made 10 or more 3-pointers in three consecutive games. There could be some question about the availability of North Carolina guard Leaky Black, who was limping at the end of the game. Williams said he didn't know the extent of the ailment. The game is a rematch of a 2017 Final Four semifinal, which North Carolina won on the way to the national championship.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas Armando Bacot controlled the paint. Cole Anthony turned in big late-game plays. And along the way, No. 6 North Carolina offered plenty of the toughness that its Hall of Fame coach wanted to see following the team’s first loss.Anthony hit a driving layup and four key free throws in the final 64 seconds to help the Tar Heels hold off No. 11 Oregon 78-74 in Friday’s third-place game at the Battle 4 Atlantis. The Tar Heels (6-1) were coming off Thursday’s defeat to Michigan in which they trailed at one point by 24 points. This time, UNC looked sharp in building a double-digit lead, then Anthony helped them hang on when the Ducks (6-2) got within a point.“It was probably a double good feeling because we had a 10-point lead and we got it there with our toughness and our attention to detail,” UNC coach Roy Williams said, adding: “Then all of a sudden it gets to be a one-possession game, and then I liked our toughness after that again.”Anthony had a baseline drive past Will Richardson with the Tar Heels up 70-69. He then hit four straight free throws to protect the lead in a game that went down to the final seconds. The freshman point guard finished with 19 points despite sitting for a chunk of the second half after picking up his fourth foul.“I want to win, so whatever that means I’ve got to do - whether I’ve got to get a rebound, got to get a steal, whatever was needed I was going to try to do that for the team.”Senior Brandon Robinson followed with clinching free throws with 0.8 seconds left.Bacot had 23 points, 12 rebounds and a season-high six blocks for UNC, strongly patrolling the paint after struggling against Michigan’s size a day earlier in a game that he said left him feeling “like I got my butt whipped.”“Today coming into the game, I knew I just had to make everything simple and just attack the offensive glass and do the moves we work on every day,” Bacot said.Payton Pritchard had 19 points to lead Oregon, which nearly erased a third double-digit tournament deficit in as many days. But this time, Pritchard couldn’t connect on a late tying 3 after Anthony’s first two free throws in what amounted to the Ducks’ last best chance.“We’ve just got to get a little tougher,” Oregon coach Dana Altman said. “I liked our effort. I thought we played as hard as we could. But you’ve got to be more physical on the boards. We took it weak to the basket a few times. You’ve got to really take It strong. We’ve just didn’t finish enough plays.”BIG PICTUREOregon: The Ducks had a wild tournament. First, they came from 19 down after halftime to beat No. 13 Seton Hall. Then they rallied from 17 down before losing in overtime against No. 8 Gonzaga. They made one more tough climb after doing down 10 with about five minutes left but fell a little short.UNC: The Tar Heels won their Atlantis opener against Alabama but Williams said after the Michigan loss that the team’s 5-0 start hasn’t been a “very good 5-0 compared to the way I think we should play and could play.” The response was UNC’s best overall performance this season.AT THE LINEOregon made just 12 of 20 free throws while the Tar Heels - who came in ranked 321st nationally at 60% - made 20 of 21.“They hit all their free throws, we didn’t,” Altman said. “It really hurts when you lose a couple of games to a couple of really good teams and you don’t do everything under your control.”BLOCK PARTYThe Tar Heels finished with a season-high 12 blocks, highlighted the 6-3 Anthony skying to stuff a first-half dunk attempt by the 6-7 Shakur Juiston.TIP-INSUNC’s Leaky Black didn’t play after halftime because of a foot injury. K. J. Smith played behind Anthony and had two assists. ... Williams earned his 877th career win to break a tie with Kentucky’s Adolph Rupp for fifth on the all-time men’s list. ... Oregon made 12 of 30 3s, though just four after halftime. ... UNC finished with a 47-39 rebounding advantage, though Oregon had a 22-19 edge on the offensive glass. ... This is the first time in Oregon history that the Ducks have played four ranked teams in the nonconference schedule.UP NEXTOregon: Hosts Hawaii on Dec. 7.UNC: Hosts No. 10 Ohio State on Wednesday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge.---Follow Aaron Beard on Twitter at https://twitter.com/aaronbeardap---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019PISCATAWAY, N. J. Rutgers came into a season with high expectations but got off to a sluggish start. The last two games the Scarlet Knights have appeared to turn a corner, winning back-to-back games by at least 25 points.Geo Baker had 17 points and four assists and Ron Harper Jr. had 15 points and seven rebounds to lead Rutgers past Massachusetts 82-57 at the RAC on Friday.''The chemistry seems really good,'' Baker said. ''I think all the guys are on the same page and everyone's playing their roles - we're doing really well.'' Rutgers (6-1) took the lead for the first time on a layup by Paul Mulcahy with 13:34 remaining in the first half to make it 8-7. UMass (5-3) would retake the lead at 15-13 a couple of minutes later on a 3-pointer by T. J. Weeks. Harper would give Rutgers the lead for good when he hit a layup to make it 21-20 with 6:32 to go in the half. The Scarlet Knights would take a 34-27 lead into intermission and continue to build on the lead throughout the second half.''When our defense is locked in like that, we'll keep leads,'' Rutgers coach Steve Pikiell said. ''When our defense gets a lapse, it becomes a problem, but I think they're all learning.'' UMass was led by Weeks with 19 points and seven rebounds. Sy Chatman came off the bench to score 16.Caleb McConnell and Jacob Young each added 10 points for Rutgers, while Myles Johnson grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds.''I feel like we're taking more pride on the defensive end. We're preparing better in practice,'' Harper said. ''This team's just trying to create a defensive identity, and if we do that, we're going to be a good team.'' BIG PICTUREUMass: After a 5-0 start under third-year coach Matt McCall, the Minutemen have lost three straight games. They have five more games and the month of January to get right before Atlantic 10 play begins in January.Rutgers: Now things get real for the Scarlet Knights. While they're off to a good start, every game but one - a loss - was in the cozy confines of their home arena. They travel to Pitt before opening conference play at No. 3 Michigan State and hosting Wisconsin before playing in-state rival No. 13 Seton Hall.PUSHING THE PACEThe Scarlet Knights look best when they get out and run. Rutgers had 34 fastbreak points, while UMass managed only six.''The way UMass plays, and we only had two days to prepare, we wanted to be really aggressive. We have a lot of ball handlers, so it plays into what we want to do,'' Pikiell said.SPREADING THE WEALTHRutgers had four players score in double-figures for the fourth straight game.UP NEXTUMass: The Minutemen host South Carolina on Wednesday night.Rutgers: The Scarlet Knights play Pittsburgh on the road in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Tuesday night.

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 29, 2019No. 8 Gonzaga and ... surprise! ... Michigan will play Friday in the Battle 4 Atlantis title game at Imperial Arena on Paradise Island, Bahamas.Picked to finish fifth in the preseason Big Ten Conference poll, Michigan (6-0) has used the Battle 4 Atlantis to make an early statement under first-year coach Juwan Howard.Howard replaced John Beilein, and stars Jordan Poole, Charles Matthews and Ignas Brazdeikis also are gone from last year's 30-win team."Granted, they've been very successful in the past," Howard said following Thursday's 73-64 semifinal victory against No. 6 North Carolina. "But to embrace a new staff and to be all in, I'm very thankful for that -- because each and every one of them, they didn't have to. It was a choice, but it was a choice because they trusted the staff, they trusted us as men to help lead them and teach them and develop them." Michigan's style under Howard, who returned to his alma mater with NBA credentials as a longtime Miami Heat assistant, has pushed offensive tempo. The win over North Carolina marked six straight in which the Wolverines scored at least 70 points. The Wolverines are third in the nation in field-goal percentage and No. 31 in adjusted offensive efficiency, per KenPom.com advanced metrics. Some new faces have also responded when asked to step up, as was the case Thursday when senior Zavier Simpson fouled out. Eli Brooks scored 24 points and David DeJulius added 11."Zavier Simpson is a great player and a leader of our team," DeJulius said. "Me and Eli said we were going to lead the team." Gonzaga (8-0) is coming off a 73-72 overtime victory in Thursday's semifinal against Oregon. The Bulldogs led by 17 points in the early going against the No. 11 Ducks, and by five points with a minute left in regulation, before having to rally in overtime.Center Filip Petrusev grabbed 15 rebounds and scored four of his 22 points to fuel Gonzaga's overtime rally from down four points. He also showed off his versatility with a perfectly placed assist out of a double-team to a wide-open Corey Kispert, who made a critical 3-pointer late in regulation.Gonzaga coach Mark Few has the option of countering a fast Michigan team with a big lineup, a strategy the Bulldogs employed against Oregon. Few often paired the 6-foot-10 Killian Tillie with 6-foot-11 Petrusev, utilizing the former in the high post and wing and Petrusev on the low block.Having a healthy Tillie is a welcome luxury for Gonzaga after he sustained a knee injury in 2018. Tillie did not play in the Battle 4 Atlantis opener against Southern Miss."I think the main thing to put us over the top would probably be Killian's health," Kispert told the Spokesman Review before the season. "He's just so lethal for us, you saw that two years ago. He's so unbelievably talented and makes a big difference for us and the way we run offense." Tillie went out in the first half of a Sweet 16 loss to Florida State in the 2018 NCAA Tournament that, if it had won, would have matched Gonzaga up with Michigan.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 29, 2019PARADISE ISLAND, Bahamas Isaiah Livers scored 21 points and Michigan again overwhelmed a highly ranked opponent with its flowing offense to beat No. 8 Gonzaga 82-64 on Friday in the championship game of the Battle 4 Atlantis.Jon Teske added 19 points and 15 rebounds for the Wolverines, who beat sixth-ranked North Carolina on Thursday and finished a memorable three-game run to the title by giving first-year coach Juwan Howard another marquee victory. This one had a similar feeling to the UNC win, too, with Michigan's offense kicking into a hot-shooting gear midway through the second half to take control and build a huge lead.Michigan (7-0) led just 38-36 when the shots started falling from just about everywhere: a 3-pointer from Zavier Simpson, two drives from freshman Franz Wagner, a 3 from Livers and two more from David DeJulius. It was a burst of 10 straight scoring possessions - with Michigan moving the ball to get good looks on just about every one - that put the Wolverines up 62-43 by the midway point of the second half.Gonzaga (8-1) never got the lead below double figures again.Michigan shot 54% for the game, including 12 of 23 from 3-point range.Killian Tillie scored 20 points for the battered Bulldogs, who dealt with numerous injury concerns over the three-day tournament. Gonzaga just couldn't keep up with the Wolverines operating with confident efficiency, and finished the game shooting 40%.BIG PICTUREGonzaga: The Bulldogs fought through a semifinal win against No. 11 Oregon as their highlight of the Thanksgiving-week tournament. But coach Mark Few would probably love to use the coming days to get healthy, with Tillie missing the opener as he continues playing his way back from an October knee surgery while Gonzaga again didn't have Anton Watson due to an ankle injury.Michigan: Howard took over for John Beilein and inherited a team that lost its top three scorers to leave uncertainty even with several experienced players returning. But the Wolverines shot 50% or better in every game, handled two top-10 teams with ease - and likely secured themselves a strong debut in next week's latest Top 25 college basketball poll.UP NEXTGonzaga: The Zags host Texas Southern on Wednesday.Michigan: The Wolverines visit No. 2 Louisville on Tuesday in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in what has just become a very big game on the national schedule.---Follow Aaron Beard on Twitter at https://twitter.com/aaronbeardap---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25

Nov 29, 2019MINNEOLIS Charlie Moore scored 21 points, dished out 12 assists and had five steals on Friday as DePaul defeated Minnesota 73-68.Jalen Coleman-Lands added 11 points for the Blue Demons (8-0), while Paul Reed had 11 points, nine boards and a career-high seven blocked shots.Daniel Oturu led the Golden Gophers (3-4) with 19 points, 18 rebounds and four blocked shots. Payton Willis scored 16 points, Alihan Demir added 14 and Gabe Kalscheur chipped in 11.DePaul led by as much as 11 and kept Minnesota at arm's length for most of the game, but when an 8-0 Minnesota run cut the Blue Devils' lead to 65-63, Moore went to work.First, he ended the DePaul scoring drought with a floater in heavy traffic. A minute later, he stole a pass at midcourt and went the distance for a layup to put DePaul back up 69-63 with just over 4 minutes to play. The Gophers had their chances down the stretch. With a minute to go and trailing by five, a Minnesota steal sprung Willis for a breakaway, but he ended up missing a contested layup that would have made it a one-possession game. Then with the score 71-68 and 10 seconds to play, Minnesota's Bryan Greenlee stole an inbounds pass. After a timeout, the Gophers drew up a play to get it to Kalscheur for a potential game-tying 3, but Jaylen Butz blocked the shot.DePaul led for most of the first half, and when Romeo Weems converted a layup in transition with 2 minutes to go, it gave the Blue Devils their largest lead of the half at 35-24. Minnesota countered with a 9-0 run to close the half. Two baskets by Oturu led to Willis' third 3-pointer with just 3 seconds left to pull the Gophers to within 35-33 at the break.BIG PICTUREDePaul: The Blue Demons' 8-0 start is their best season-opening run since 1986-87, when they bolted out of the gate 16-0. It'll be hard for Top 25 voters to ignore DePaul after their third road victory over a Power 5 conference team in the past three weeks.Minnesota: Instead of fattening up on cupcakes, Richard Pitino put together a tough nonconference schedule. Three of the Gophers' losses so far have been against Power 5 teams - and the fourth was at Butler. They've got one more big nonconference test on their hands next week before opening Big Ten play at Iowa on Dec. 9.UP NEXTDePaul: The Blue Demons host Texas Tech on Wednesday in the first year of the Big 12/Big East Battle. The schools have met just twice, with the Blue Demons winning both, the most recent being a home-court victory in 2011.Minnesota: The Golden Gophers host Clemson on Monday as part of the annual Big Ten/ACC Challenge.
