GAME PREVIEW
Dec 06, 2017MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. -- Veteran quarterback Jay Cutler has never beaten the New England Patriots, and that trend is expected to continue Monday night. Cutler, while playing for the Denver Broncos (once) and Chicago Bears (twice), has lost by 34, 29 and 28 points in his three tries against the Patriots. On Monday, he will lead the Miami Dolphins (5-7) as they attempt to upset the Patriots (10-2) at Hard Rock Stadium. The Patriots are 11-point favorites in their game against the Dolphins, who have no hope of winning the AFC East and are long shots to return to the playoffs for a second straight year as a wild card. Miami, though, got a boost of confidence from last Sunday's 35-9 win over the Denver Broncos. "We're coming together as a team," Dolphins defensive tackle Jordan Phillips told the Miami Herald after Miami broke a five-game losing streak with a dominating performance. "We can only go up from here. " The Dolphins should be fairly healthy for Monday's game. Pro Bowl center Mike Pouncey, who left the Denver game after tweaking a hamstring injury is "all right," according to Dolphins coach Adam Gase. Cornerback Cordrea Tankersley is "OK" after suffering ankle and shoulder injuries. New England, which entered this week tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers for the best record in the AFC, will be without star tight end Rob Gronkowski, who was suspended for one game by the league for his intentional late hit last week against Tre'Davious White of the Buffalo Bills. Patriots coach Bill Belichick told the media that, in effect, Gronkowski was in the wrong on that play. "Some of the things that happened in that game, nobody wants to see," Belichick said. "Hopefully, it won't happen again. " Gronkowski has apologized for his actions, saying they came out of frustration at the referees, who he felt were not calling what should have been defensive holding calls on the Bills. Dwayne Allen, 27, will replace Gronkowski at tight end. Allen, a first-team All-ACC tight end at Clemson and a third-round pick in 2012, is a capable player, especially when paired with superstar Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. Still, Gronkowski, who has 55 catches for 849 yards, a 15. 4 average and five touchdowns, is a big loss. Allen has five catches for 40 yards and one touchdown this year. He has been targeted 13 times. The Patriots have been winning despite numerous injuries and issues. At wide receiver and tight end alone, the Patriots will be without five key targets on Monday: Gronkowski and Martellus Bennett (shoulder) at tight end; and Julian Edelman (knee), Chris Hogan (shoulder) and Malcolm Mitchell (knee) at wide receiver. Hogan, who has 33 catches this season, returned to practice this week, but he is not expected to be ready in time to play Monday. Even so, the Patriots should be fine with a receiver group that includes Brandin Cooks (53 catches, 886 yards, 16. 7 average, five touchdowns) and Danny Amendola (46 catches, 489 yards, 10. 6 average, two touchdowns). Former Miami Hurricanes speed-burner Phil Dorsett has lately become the third receiver, and Brady will also throw to his running backs, including James White (51 grabs), Rex Burkhead (24) and Dion Lewis (15). Brady, still at the top of his game at age 40, has thrown for 26 touchdowns and 3,632 yards with just four interceptions. The Patriots are averaging 29 points per game, which ranks first in the AFC and fourth in the NFL. Miami, on the other hand, is 26th in the league, averaging 17. 4 points, which is an improvement from its last-place standing just a couple of weeks ago. The Dolphins have not played well in prime-time games recently. For example, they are 1-7 in their past eight games on Monday Night Football. But the Dolphins have been a tough out for Brady at Hard Rock Stadium, where Miami has won three of the past four in the series between division rivals. New England, accustomed to the bright lights, is 16-3 in its past 19 night games. "There's a lot of excitement on Monday nights," Belichick said. "It's the only game in town that night. Everyone's watching. "

GAME PREVIEW
Dec 11, 2017 CHICAGO -- Back-to-back victories may not seem like the biggest of accomplishments, but in a season in which the Chicago Bulls are experiencing plenty of growing pains and toll-taking injuries, even small successes carry some weight. After a weekend in which Chicago managed to snap a 10-game losing streak and hold on for a pair of closely contested wins, the heavy lifting continues on Monday when the Bulls host the Boston Celtics at the United Center. The Celtics (23-5) boast the league's best record while the Bulls (5-20) possess the league's worst mark. Despite the disparity and all of the challenges that the Celtics present, Chicago's two-game winning streak has provided the Bulls with a renewed sense of confidence after dealing with the 10 consecutive setbacks. The Bulls slipped past the Hornets 119-111 in overtime at Charlotte on Friday, then posted a 104-102 home victory over the New York Knicks on Saturday.Chicago is benefitting from the return of Nikola Mirotic, who missed 23 games with facial fractures and a concussion sustained in a fight with teammate Bobby Portis. After returning to action on Friday, Mirotic sparked the Bulls with 19 points Saturday. The Bulls withstood a late-fourth-quarter surge by the Knicks and made enough plays late to win for the second straight night."We've got to keep hopefully building and gain a little confidence with finding a way to win two close games," Chicago coach Fred Hoiberg said after the Saturday victory. "Hopefully, we'll get a little rest for our guys (Sunday) and bounce back with good effort in what will obviously be an extremely tough game on Monday." For a team that has already endured its share of adversity, including the recent lengthy losing streak, using actual victories as a springboard is a sign that the Bulls haven't lost faith in themselves while navigating difficult times."We've been in a lot of tough games," Chicago guard Kris Dunn said Saturday. "It just shows that we're starting to get it together down the stretch (in games)." Now the Bulls will have to take another step forward against the league's top team. The Celtics have won seven of their last nine games, and they bounced back from a loss at San Antonio on Friday with a 91-81 road victory over the Detroit Pistons on Sunday.Boston avoided losing for the second straight game after building a 16-point, fourth-quarter lead. The Celtics weathered a late Pistons surge while Boston missed 12 straight shots, emerging on top while giving up season-low point total."We were locked in," Celtics forward Aron Baynes said. "Our offense wasn't as crisp tonight as we wanted it to be, but defensively we had a game plan and we stuck with it. We were trying to pack the paint and make them make plays from the outside. Last time, they really had whatever they wanted inside the paint. Tonight, we wanted to go out there and control it a lot better." The Celtics will look to avoid offensive lulls on Monday against the Bulls, who, despite their record, have impressed opposing teams with their effort. Playing on a short turnaround, Boston will again be without forward Marcus Morris, who didn't play on Sunday and who has already been ruled out for Monday due to a left knee injury.

GAME PREVIEW
Dec 10, 2017 The Miami Heat will seek to be the next to take advantage of Mike Conley's absence when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night. The Grizzlies lost for the 14th time in their last 15 games Saturday night, falling 102-101 to the Oklahoma City Thunder in overtime. They've gone winless on a three-game homestand that ends Monday despite leading by 17 and 20 points in their last two contests."We have to figure out a way to close out these games," noted Andrew Harrison, who has taken over as the starting point guard with Conley out. "It's frustrating. Hard to sleep." Harrison didn't do much to help the cause against the Thunder, missing seven of his eight shots.Overall, while they were able to top 100 points for the third time in the last five games, the Grizzlies needed overtime to do it, managed only a season-low nine points in the third quarter while trying to protect a big lead and were held to 44.3 percent shooting overall.Forty-five percent has been a magic number of sorts for the Heat, who have gone 9-3 when limiting the opponent below that mark. They did that Saturday night in Mexico City against Brooklyn, holding the Nets to 40.7 percent shooting in a 101-89 win."A great game for us, especially defensively," Heat guard Goran Dragic observed afterward. "We know that they were going to try to play fast. They scored 89 points and shooting 40 percent from the field. That's in our wheelhouse. We want to play like that every night on defense." Dragic had 20 points and just one turnover against the Nets. The Heat helped their cause with just six turnovers, tied for the second-fewest in a game leaguewide this season. The Heat is swinging through Memphis on the way back from Mexico, having begun a three-game trip in San Antonio. A win Monday would give them just their fifth set of back-to-back wins this season.Defense had been a problem before going south of the border. The Heat had allowed five consecutive opponents to score 100 points or more, three to reach 115.The Heat have lost 10 of 13 games in which the opponent has reached 100 points this season.Fortunately for the Heat, they'll be seeing a team Monday that has struggled offensively since Conley was shelved because of Achilles soreness after the Nov. 13 game at Milwaukee.Memphis hasn't even reached 96 in nine of 13 games since, a run that would have become 10-in-13 if not for the overtime Saturday. The drought has occurred despite the offensive brilliance of Tyreke Evans, who has averaged 28.0 points on 23-for-43 shooting (53 percent) on the homestand. The teams have split their two-game season series each of the past two years. The Heat snapped a five-game losing streak at Memphis with a 90-81 win in a defensive struggle last November.Interestingly, then-Grizzlies coach David Fizdale picked that night to demote Conley to the bench and give Harrison just his third start of the season.Harrison missed all eight of his shots, but did record a game-high seven assists.

GAME PREVIEW
Dec 11, 2017 HOUSTON -- While there are many hurdles left for the Houston Rockets to clear en route to cementing their status as legitimate title contenders, the challenge they faced and conquered Saturday night in Portland could prove landmark as opponents continue canvasing methods to keep the Rockets' high-powered offense contained. The Trail Blazers' gambit was clear: Keep the Rockets inside the arc and siphon off their unique ability to bury foes with volume 3-point shooting.Singularly, that strategy worked as Portland limited Houston to just 25 3-point attempts, roughly 20 below the Rockets' league-leading average. Mix in a formidable challenge to the Rockets' improved defense, and the Blazers fashioned the makings of an upset, carrying a 14-point advantage into the fourth quarter. However, what Houston possesses is offensive versatility, and its ability to concoct adjustments again paid dividends as guard James Harden mounted a series of rim attacks to pace a 40-point final frame and a 124-117 victory, the Rockets' ninth consecutive win.The Rockets are 10-0 with guard Chris Paul in the lineup and proved once again that, perhaps when 3-pointers aren't an option and if their defense appears shaky, they remain a dangerous outfit."A little adversity when we needed it," said Harden, who poured in 48 points. "We needed it. We've been beating teams by 15-plus (points), so it was good to lock down when we needed to, get stops when we needed to and give ourselves the best chance at winning." As they prepare to kick off a season-long seven-game homestand on Monday night against the New Orleans Pelicans (14-13) at Toyota Center, the Rockets (20-4) appear primarily burdened with the chore of meeting their own elevated expectations. They survived a three-game road trip stretched over seven days, lingering in Los Angeles for nearly a week before and after their win over the Lakers, only to rout the Utah Jazz and outlast the Trail Blazers. Now, with so many games at home in succession awaiting them, complacency could be as dangerous an opponent as any of the teams the Rockets will actually face. Their ability to remain in peak form, or at least present some acceptable approximation of it, will be critical. The Pelicans, even given their inconsistent play of late, are certainly a viable threat. New Orleans continued its six-game run of alternating wins and losses with a 131-124 home victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday night, posting a season-high point total in the process.New Orleans has regressed defensively from where it ranked last season, but its offensive options are daunting. Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins have materialized into the frightful tandem many anticipated, but against the 76ers, it was Jrue Holiday who did damage with a season-high 34 points, 19 in the fourth quarter as the Pelicans erased an eight-point deficit."I guess it was just my turn at that time," Holiday said. "Obviously, we were down and I was having a rough time passing the ball, so at that point, when the starters came back in, I just had the hot hand and they just kept on feeding me." That skill and scoring depth has carried the Pelicans thus far. Their ability to summon that offensive punch against the superior teams in the league will forge their developing identity. And it doesn't hurt to have an in-form point guard. Rajon Rondo dished out a season-high 18 assists Sunday to go with 13 points.

GAME PREVIEW
Dec 10, 2017 OKLAHOMA CITY -- Paul George said he learned from being on the bench for the Oklahoma City Thunder's last two games. The forward, in his first year with the Thunder, is still trying to figure out where he fits into the offense, as is fellow first-year Oklahoma City forward Carmelo Anthony.George, who is suffering from a right calf contusion, hopes to be back Monday when Oklahoma City hosts Charlotte."It's just about playing with one another, playing for one another," George told The Oklahoman. "The game will be extremely easy if we just create shots for one another. As good as we are, we got to do it together. That's what I took away from it.While George missed his first two games of the season, the Thunder experienced mixed results. On Thursday, the Thunder blew a 16-point lead to the Brooklyn Nets and were handed a 100-95 loss in Mexico City where they were the road team. Two nights later, Oklahoma City snapped an eight-game road losing streak by coming back from 20 points down to get a 102-101 overtime win at Memphis.George's two star teammates also experienced their share of mixed results in his absence.Russell Westbrook led all scorers with 31 points Thursday but shot 10 of 27 and scored five points in the fourth quarter. In Memphis, he recorded a triple-double with 20 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds despite shooting 7 of 29.Carmelo Anthony, who is averaging a career-low 18.3 points and shooting a career-worst 40.4 percent, scored 11 points on 5 of 20 shooting Thursday and led the Thunder with 21 points on 7 of 20 shooting Saturday."We kept working and grinding and gave ourselves a chance. That's good for the soul," Thunder coach Billy Donavan said. "This was a good boost for us." George last played in Tuesday's 100-94 win over Utah when he scored 21 points. The Thunder are in the midst of their most productive stretch of the season with four wins in their last five games. They would like to keep up momentum to reach .500 for the first time since Nov. 15 headed into a three-game road swing. The Thunder is just 3-10 away from home.Even though George's return would give the Thunder one of its better defenders back, they could be without another top defender, as Andre Roberson is questionable with a left ankle sprain.Hornets coach Steve Clifford is expected to miss his fifth consecutive game with an undisclosed health issue.Clifford hasn't been on Charlotte's bench since Dec. 1.With Stephen Silas filling in, not much has changed. The Hornets have struggled especially defensively in dropping seven of their last eight including three in a row. During their last eight games, the Hornets are allowing 106.2 point per game.Charlotte guard Nic Batum is listed as questionable as the effects from a torn ligament in his left elbow keep adding up.Batum has played in 12 of the last 13 games after missing the season's first 12 games. In Saturday's 110-99 loss to the Lakers, Batum was forced to the bench for the fourth quarter in a tight game due to pain in the elbow."Since I got back three weeks ago, it's really, really bothered my game," Batum told The Charlotte Observer. "It's (affected) my performance. I can't be myself." Batum, who is averaging 10.1 points, 4.4 assists and 4.3 rebounds, decided against surgery following the injury. His shooting numbers, both overall and from behind the 3-point line, are the worst in his 10-year NBA career."I know I can do more to help this team," Batum told the Observer. "But it really is affecting my performance every night. I can practice, I can go through treatment every day, but (in-game) contact is different." Frank Kaminsky and Jeremy Lamb are also listed as questionable. Kaminsky has missed the last two games with a sprained right ankle while Lamb missed Saturday's loss to the Lakers after suffering a shin contusion in Friday's overtime loss to the Chicago Bulls.Charlotte (9-16) is 1-10 away from home this season. The Hornets have lost their last eight road games since getting their win outside of Charlotte on Oct. 30 against Memphis.

GAME PREVIEW
Dec 11, 2017 LOS ANGELES -- The surging Toronto Raptors can extend their season-best winning streak to seven games when they face the Los Angeles Clippers at Staples Center on Monday. The Clippers, meanwhile, will look to win back-to-back games for the first time in two weeks and prove to themselves they can have some success without All-Star Blake Griffin. When the Raptors (17-7) defeated the Sacramento Kings on Sunday, their current six-game win streak matched their best from last season. It is also the longest winning streak for the Raptors since they won 11 consecutive during the 2015-16 season. The 102-87 victory at Sacramento was relatively tame for the Raptors' new up-tempo offense, but the club's first afternoon start of the season could have been to blame. On Monday, Toronto will have to face the rigors of a second game in two days."(The new offense is) coming along well," the Raptors' DeMar DeRozan said, according to the Toronto Star. "We're getting more and more comfortable, ball movement is getting much better and guys getting more comfortable handling the ball, pushing the ball in transition. Now everybody's getting a feel for the offense. That's a good thing. And we've still got a long way to go." That's not a good sign for a Clippers team that has struggled on defense without Griffin, likely out until the end of January with a sprained left knee. They also lost defensive-minded guard Patrick Beverley for the season to knee surgery. After dropping four consecutive games following the Griffin injury, the Clippers were able to finish off a last-second victory Saturday afternoon over the Washington Wizards, 113-112, when Lou Williams hit a 30-foot 3-pointer with just over a second remaining. Williams finished with 35 points. The Clippers did find a little more offense Sunday, as forward Danilo Gallinari improved in his second game back from a strained hip. Gallinari had 25 points on 8-of-19 shooting after struggling with his shot upon his return Thursday in a defeat to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The Clippers will consider it progress that they no longer are thinking about how to end a losing streak. They can now focus on how to build off success."When you're struggling, it's easier to lose one because you're thinking about the struggle instead of thinking about winning," Los Angeles coach Doc Rivers said after the Saturday victory. "It helps when you come into a game thinking about winning the game instead of thinking about losing and what you've done in the past. I thought overall we had a pretty good mindset (Saturday)." The Clippers will need more than positive thoughts playing against a Raptors offense that has averaged 117 points per game during the six-game win streak. DeRozan is not only coming off his first ever victory at Sacramento after nine years in the NBA, but he also is returning to his hometown of Los Angeles for the Monday game. The Raptors have won the first two games of their four-game West Conference road swing, and Dwayne Casey has his 500th game as Toronto head coach under his belt. Casey joked to reporters postgame that the milestone only means that he is "old." Toronto has listed guard Kyle Lowrey as "probable" for Monday due to an ankle injury. Center Lucas Nogueira (calf) and guard Delon Wright (shoulder) remain out indefinitely. While the Clippers will be without Beverley and Griffin, guard Milos Teodosic (plantar fasciitis) was upgraded to "questionable." Rivers said that if Teodosic does not return Monday, the guard should be back for the Wednesday game at Orlando.

GAME PREVIEW
Dec 11, 2017 OAKLAND, Calif. -- After getting outgunned at home by the top team in the Western Conference, the Portland Trail Blazers tip off a five-game trip against the West's second-best when they visit the Golden State Warriors on Monday night. In the Warriors, the Trail Blazers will encounter a team just home after a historic road trip of its own.Golden State went 6-0 on the 10-day journey, becoming just the ninth team in NBA history to have a perfect six-game trip. The Warriors have played 10 of their past 13 games on the road, squeezing a four-day, three-game homestand between four- and six-game trips.Golden State and the Orlando Magic are tied for the NBA lead in road games played with 16.Now the Warriors will play nine of their next 10 games at home. Being that the only road game in the stretch is against the Los Angeles Lakers, they will not leave the state of California again until Jan. 3."That's beautiful," Golden State forward Draymond Green said of the upcoming schedule. "We earned ourself this homestand. We have to continue to allow ourselves some more practice time, which is what I think we need. We'll continue to get better." The last time the Warriors played at home, they were beaten 110-106 by the Sacramento Kings. Golden State played without Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant that night.Curry will be missing again Monday, but for a different reason. His bruised thigh has healed, but he sustained a sprained ankle on Dec. 4 in New Orleans. The Warriors said at the time he would be out a minimum of two weeks, after which he would be re-evaluated.Golden State won its last two games of the trip without Curry, thanks in large part to Durant, who totaled 71 points, 21 rebounds, 17 assists and seven blocked shots in the victories at Charlotte and Detroit. The Trail Blazers know all about one-man wrecking crews. They were overpowered by James Harden's 48 points in a 124-117 loss to the Houston Rockets on Saturday night.Damian Lillard countered with 35 points in a prelim for his twice-a-season Oakland homecoming.Lillard has scored at least 16 points in all eight previous returns to Oakland, with high games of 37 and 38. However, Portland lost seven of the eight games. The Trail Blazers are taking to the road on the heels of a winless four-game homestand during which they lost to the Milwaukee Bucks, the New Orleans Pelicans and the Washington Wizards before Houston."I'm always excited about a challenge," Lillard said of facing the defending champions. "It was a disappointing homestand. You want to win at least two or three of them."But I feel like we're in a good place as a group mentally. On the last road trip, we went 4-1 and didn't play great. (Saturday) we played a good game. We turned it in the right direction. Hopefully we can play better on this trip." The Warriors have beaten the Trail Blazers in six consecutive meetings and 10 of 11 over the past three seasons.

GAME PREVIEW
Time: 8:00 PM EST MINNEAPOLIS -- The No. 14 Minnesota Golden Gophers host Drake on Monday to begin a stretch of six straight home games, the first four coming against non-conference opponents. It might have been looked at as a stretch to pad Minnesota's record before the beef of the Big Ten schedule begins. Perception now is much different than a week ago when the Gophers recovered from their first loss of the season to No. 10 Miami by beating Rutgers at home. Minnesota (8-3) returns home after two road losses to non-ranked teams, including Saturday's 95-79 loss at Arkansas. The Gophers, having lost three of their past four, could fall out of the top-25 rankings for the first time this season." We're not pressing the panic button right now," Minnesota guard Dupree McBrayer told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "But we've got to go back to being hungry on defense when nobody was talking about us. That's what has got to be our identity." The Gophers' defense has faltered in recent losses. Arkansas shot 57.4 percent from the field on Saturday and hit 10 of 23 from 3-point territory." People are telling us we're good. So the illusion of people telling us that we're good should not mean that we're good," Minnesota coach Richard Pitino told the Star Tribune last week. "We can't fall into the trap of the illusion that just because people tell us we're going to beat Miami at home because it's a great atmosphere. That's not really why you're going to win. So it is a challenge. I found it a lot easier when people told us we were going to stink to get everyone to band together." Pitino and Minnesota are facing different expectations last year. By returning five starters, the Gophers were ranked from the beginning of the season after reaching the NCAA tournament last year. This year's team is strong with its starting group, but doesn't have the depth it had last season. Minnesota was scoreless off the bench in the loss to Miami and had 13 points from reserves against Arkansas, eight coming from freshman Isaiah Washington." I'm not lowering expectations, but we are a different team than last year," Pitino told the paper. "Our bench is totally different. My first two subs were either Dupree or Akeem (Springs) or Eric Curry last year. We don't have those." While the Gophers try to recover, Drake (5-4) ended a three-game losing streak with a 93-74 win against Omaha on Saturday. Reed Timmer scored 27 points for the Bulldogs. It was Timmer's fifth game with 25 or more points this season and he's sixth on the school's all-time scoring list. More importantly for coach Niko Medved, his team had supplementary scoring against Omaha as freshman Jalen Gibbs scored a season-high 16. C. J. Rivers had 10 points, five rebounds and four assists." We've always said we are a really good team when we share the ball," Medved told the team's website. "I thought a lot of guys played really, really well tonight. Obviously, Reed and C. J. played well and I think the freshmen are really coming on. Jalen and Noah 1/8Thomas 3/8 are doing really well in practice and Jalen has been coming on defensively. It's nice to get a lift from those young guys."

GAME PREVIEW
Time: 7:00 PM EST Venue: Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY, 11217 / NEW YORK -- It took a little longer than expected, but the Washington Capitals are right where most forecasters predicted. Unfortunately for the New York Islanders, the same can be said for them. A pair of Metropolitan Division contenders will face off Monday night when the Islanders host the Capitals at Barclays Center. The Capitals earned their season-high fourth consecutive win Friday when they beat the visiting New York Rangers 4-2. The Islanders lost for the third straight game Saturday when they fell to the host Boston Bruins 3-1. The winning streak is the highlight of a six-week surge for the Capitals (18-11-1), who went 5-6-1 in October but are 13-5-0 since to move into second place in the Metropolitan Division, two points behind the Columbus Blue Jackets. Washington, which earned the Presidents' Trophy as the NHL's best regular-season team each of the last two seasons, is 8-2-0 since Nov. 16, when it fell to the Colorado Avalanche, 6-2. Defenseman Matt Niskanen told the Washington Post the loss to the Avalanche -- who finished last in the NHL last season with 70 fewer points than Washington -- served as the turning point for the Capitals, who were once again expected to contend for the Stanley Cup this season." I think we got our butts chewed a little bit (after the game), rightfully so, and guys stepped up, started playing better," Niskanen said. "Hockey's a lot more fun when you're playing well, playing hard for each other, like we are right now." The game hasn't been as much fun lately for the Islanders (16-10-3), who went 1-1-2 on a four-game road trip to fall into a tie for the two Eastern Conference wild-card spots with the Pittsburgh Penguins. New York and Pittsburgh are just one point ahead of the ninth-place Rangers. The Islanders, who missed the playoffs by one point last season and were projected by most to be in the wild-card mix this season, haven't helped themselves lately by allowing the opponent to score the game's first goal in each of the past five games. Perhaps a return home will help the Islanders get back on track. New York is 8-1-2 at Barclays, where it will play seven of the next eight games." Going to try to get the first goal one of these games," Islanders coach Doug Weight said during the team's postgame show Saturday night. "It's going to be good to get home. I think we've had 18 or 19 on the road, so our numbers are good. Now we've got to get home and be homers for a while." With the Capitals having enjoyed two days off, No. 1 goalie Braden Holtby likely will make his third consecutive start. The Islanders, who have employed an almost even split of the goaltending duties between Jaroslav Halak and Thomas Greiss, had yet to announce a starter for Monday. Holtby made 27 saves in the Friday win. He is 13-3-3 in 19 regular-season games against the Islanders. Halak made his second straight start Saturday, when he recorded 30 saves. He is 8-8-0 in 16 regular-season games against the Capitals. Greiss, who made his most recent start Tuesday, is 2-1-1 in four regular-season appearances against Washington.

GAME PREVIEW
Time: 7:00 PM EST Venue: Madison Square Garden, New York, N. Y., 10001 / NEW YORK -- The Dallas Stars recently put together five straight wins and were feeling good about their performances. A week later, Dallas is seeking answers in the form of wins as it starts a four-game East Coast road trip Monday night against the New York Rangers. Dallas (16-13-1) scored 23 goals during a five-game stretch from Nov. 24-Dec. 3. It was part of a 7-1-0 run that saw the Stars score 32 times overall but they followed it up with three straight losses to Nashville, St. Louis and Vegas. The Stars are on their second three-game losing streak of the season. They also lost three straight when they scored a combined five goals Nov. 13-16 at Carolina, Florida and Tampa Bay. On Saturday, the Stars were handed a 5-3 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights. Dallas never led but tied the game twice before giving up two goals in a span of 2:25 during the second period." There's a sense of urgency through the team when you lose a couple of games," Dallas center Jason Spezza said. "You have to stop your losing streak as quick as you can in this league. We're not unaware of that, so that's why we had some urgency in our game tonight, but not enough finish and didn't keep enough out." We can't give them enough chances to get four goals either. So, there's things we have to work on to be a better team heading out on a tough road trip." To be a better team, the Stars are hoping their power play gets going along with some of their key scorers. Dallas is scoreless in its last 16 opportunities with the man advantage, and 2-for-42 in the last 13 games. Spezza scored in Saturday's loss and has four of his five goals since Nov. 18. Captain Jaime Benn also scored Saturday but only has two goals in his last 11 contests." You've got to lead the way if you're going to be the captain," Benn said. "I'm not doing it right now and I don't know who the team is supposed to follow if I'm not doing it." Tyler Seguin leads the team with 14 goals, but three were against Calgary on Nov. 24 and two were in a 7-2 win over Colorado on Dec. 3. He has taken 18 shots on goal in the last three games with nothing to show for it against three of the West's top teams." It's humbling looking in the mirror," Seguin said. "If I look at myself the last few games going against the big dogs, I wasn't big enough. So I've got to be a lot better." The Stars will hope to find their game in an easy road trip in terms of travel. After facing the Rangers, they will visit the New York Islanders on Wednesday, the New Jersey Devils two days later and Philadelphia Flyers Saturday. Then they will return to Dallas to play nine of 10 games at home and by the end of the trip, the Stars will be hoping not to be discussing regrouping. While Dallas is faltering of late, the Rangers (16-11-2) are 7-2-0 in their last nine games after getting a 5-2 win over the Devils on Saturday night. Saturday's game capped four straight against Metropolitan Division opponents and was deemed significantly more important after a disappointing 4-2 loss at Washington on Friday." This is what we needed," goaltender Henrik Lundqvist said after allowing two goals or fewer for the eighth time in 12 games. "That's the good part about this league, when you lose a game you don't a lot of time to walk around and think about it. You just regroup and focus on the next one. I kind of like this; you get a challenge right away. We played really well. I felt like this was one of our better games as of late." The Rangers also are 10-1-0 in their last 11 home games since Oct. 26. It is the first time they posted 10 wins in a span of 11 home games within one season since going 12-1-0 in a span of 13 home games from Oct. 20-Dec. 15, 1982. New York's 98 goals rank third in the Eastern Conference behind Tampa Bay and Toronto. Saturday was the 18th time in the last 23 games the Rangers scored at least three goals and 15th time in that span they tallied at least four times. Mats Zuccarello leads the Rangers with 24 points (seven goals, 17 assists) and scored twice Saturday. In his last nine games, Zuccarello has four goals and nine assists. Despite everything going right Saturday and their performances at home recently, the Rangers are still outside of the playoff picture thanks to their underwhelming 2-6-2 start. In the tight division race, five points separate first and sixth-place where the Rangers reside despite going nearly a month without consecutive defeats." Everybody knew we were playing four divisional games, so that part was important," Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. "Now we have to recover. We've played two back-to-backs here and now we're playing (at home against Dallas) on Monday. We need to get some rest and focus on that." The Rangers are 7-3-1 in the last 11 meetings with Dallas. Lundqvist made 27 saves in a 2-0 win at Dallas on Dec. 15, 2016, but Benn scored and had two assists in a 7-6 win in New York on Jan. 17.

GAME PREVIEW
Time: 7:00 PM EST Venue: PPG Paints Arena, Pittsburgh, PA, 15219 / PITTSBURGH -- A lot of teams talk about getting good starts, but it will really hit home Monday night when the Penguins host the Colorado Avalanche at PPG Paints Arena. The Penguins (16-12-3) were livid about their opening period Saturday, when they gave up two goals in the initial two minutes and three overall in the first of a 4-3 loss to Toronto." I just think it's a (lack of) readiness on our part. It's a lack of awareness," coach Mike Sullivan said. "It starts for me with a mindset and readiness and awareness to play the game hard and play the game with a certain level of commitment right from the drop of the puck, and for whatever reason we didn't have it." Several states south, the Avalanche (13-13-2) were satisfied with their start in a 7-3 win at Florida." We had a really good start," Colorado goaltender Semyon Varlamov said. "It gives you lots of confidence when the guys are scoring so many goals." The Penguins have won five of their past seven games, but poor starts have been a problem at times all season, and it is sticking in their craw." We've got to come out with the mentality to dictate the pace," team captain Sidney Crosby said. "We can't come out seeing what kind of game it's going to be. Before we know it, we're down 2- or 3-nothing. That's basically what it comes down to." We've got to be able to play the exact same way every night, home or on the road. We've got to establish our game." The contest against Colorado marks the final game of Pittsburgh's longest homestand, a five-game set. It is 2-2-0 through the first four, both losses being one-goal affairs. The Penguins, who were off Sunday, could get No. 1 goaltender Matt Murray back from a lower-body injury that has sidelined him the past five games. He participated with no limitations in Saturday's morning skate and indicated he was close to returning. Colorado, meanwhile, has followed up a 1-4-0 homestand by splitting the first two contests of a four-game road trip. The Avalanche dropped a 5-2 decision versus Tampa Bay before the win at Florida. Now come back-to-back games at Pittsburgh and Washington." They're two good teams. Both playing real well right now," Colorado coach Jared Bednar said. "But we like the way we're trending. We didn't like our homestand. There was a lot of good things out of the Tampa game. I know we lost 5-2, but you've got to take the positives out of that." And then there was that start and all those goals at Florida, with 14 players earning at least one point." I really liked our start. Loved our first period," Bednar said. It's the kind of thing that could be Pittsburgh's worst nightmare.

GAME PREVIEW
Time: 7:30 PM EST Venue: Little Caesars Arena, Detroit, MI, 48201 / DETROIT -- The outcomes were similar and the postgame comments were the same from both the Detroit Red Wings and Florida Panthers following their most recent performances. On Saturday, the Wings fell 6-1 to the St. Louis Blues to drop to 1-1 on their current five-game homestand, while the Panthers were humbled 7-3 at home by the Colorado Avalanche to end a three-game homestand. As the two Atlantic Division foes prepared to face each other Monday at Little Caesars Arena, both come into the contest sharing common assessments of their last outing." You don't want to lose at home 6-1, but the first two periods I thought we did a lot of good things," Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg said. "But the puck ended up in our net and not their net." Panthers coach Bob Boughner's postgame comments seemed to echo Zetterberg's words." Every team gets breakdowns," Boughner said. "That's when you need your goalie to make a big save. We didn't allow a lot of chances. We didn't. The ones that we did went into the net." Carrying the load for the injured Roberto Luongo (upper body), Panthers backup goalie James Reimer allowed four goals for the eighth time in 16 games this season. In Detroit, Wings goalie Jimmy Howard, who was brilliant through the first six weeks of the season, gave up four goals again for the fifth time in eight starts and the sixth time in his last nine appearances." Jimmy's been really good for us all year," Zetterberg said. "He probably wants a few back this game, but it happens." Howard wasn't about to debate his captain's assessment." I need to come (up) with saves for the guys," Howard said. "At the end of the day the guys did their job and I have to do mine for them." The Panthers, 1-2-2 in their last five games, have struggled to find the net, scoring more than three goals just three times in their last 12 games, but at least there's an excuse for the malady. They are without injured center Aleksander Barkov (lower body) and right wing Evgenii Dadonov (shoulder), who have combined for 17 goals between them this season." Not having Daddy and Barky in the lineup, sooner or later, it's going to catch up to you," Boughner said. As the Panthers begin a five-game road swing in Detroit, others have sought to pick up the slack. Defenseman Aaron Ekblad and forward Denis Malgin are each riding three-game goal-scoring streaks. The Wings have topped three goals just once in their last 10 games, but can't blame injuries for their goal-scoring woes. It starts with Zetterberg, who has gone a career-high 22 games without scoring. Center Dylan Larkin leads the team with 23 points, but has endured nine games in a row without a goal. Right winger Anthony Mantha is Detroit's goal-scoring leader with 12, but has netted just two in his last 10 games. Defenseman Mike Green, second on the team with 16 assists, has one point (a goal) in the last 10 games. Detroit coach Jeff Blashill believes his team is doing things the right way and if they stay with it, will ultimately produce results." Certainly through the first 40, I thought we played probably as good as we have," Blashill said of the loss to the Blues. "Unfortunately we didn't score. What I do is you've just got to keep playing like that." That's what you control, how you play, so you've got to come back on Monday and play the same way."

GAME PREVIEW
Time: 8:00 PM EST Venue: Bell MTS Place, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, R3C 5S5 / WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Pretender or contender? The Winnipeg Jets likely will find out what kind of team they have over the next week as they play four games against some of the toughest the Western Conference has to offer: the Vancouver Canucks, the Chicago Blackhawks and back-to-back contests with the St. Louis Blues. December is usually too early for crunch time, but with the Jets coming off a three-game road trip on which they garnered just a single point in an overtime loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning on Saturday night, they can either show they belong with the big boys or join the pack of middle-of-the-road squads. Winnipeg plays three of its next four at home, starting with a Monday game against the Canucks. Connor Hellebuyck will have a big say in which way the Jets go. The team's biggest surprise with his solid play through the first quarter of the season, the No. 1 netminder has seen the shine come off some of his numbers lately. In five of his past six starts, Hellebuyck produced a save percentage below .900. The lone exception was a 5-0 shutout against Ottawa, a game in which his teammates dominated in all zones, outshooting the Senators 49-21. The good news for Winnipeg is that Jets goalie Steve Mason, who sustained a concussion a couple of weeks ago, returned to practice this weekend and could return to the lineup this week. Despite the recent troubles, the Jets (17-8-5) are still 10-2-1 at Bell MTS Place this season. Winnipeg defenseman Josh Morrissey was disappointed in the start of the road trip, which included losses to the Detroit Red Wings and the Florida Panthers, but thought the Jets made huge strides against Tampa Bay, widely considered to be the best team in the NHL right now." I was pretty proud of the way we played. We battled very hard," Morrissey told the Winnipeg Free Press. "They're a really good team over there and a team that's had a great start. For us, we gave ourselves a chance to win. It was a great, gutsy effort for us, considering the last couple of games that we didn't really like the full 60 minutes." The Canucks come to town smarting from a 4-2 loss at Calgary on Saturday in which they gave up a trio of goals in the last nine minutes. It was the third time in as many weeks that Vancouver led after the second period and lost. The Canucks will be without the services of their third-leading goal scorer, Sven Baertschi, who took a wrist shot directly in the face against the Flames and returned home. Early speculation is he may have broken his jaw or cheekbone or shattered some teeth -- or all three. In addition to Daniel Sedin and Henrik Sedin stepping up to fill the void, Vancouver will also be looking for some help from forward Brock Boeser, who leads all rookies with 15 goals. Canucks coach Travis Green said he likes the fact Boeser has bulged the twine playing on different lines and in multiple ways." That's the key for any goal-scorer in this league," Green told the Vancouver Province. "Unless you have an absolute laser beam, which only a few guys in the league have, you have to find ways to score around the net."

GAME PREVIEW
Time: 10:00 PM EST Venue: Honda Center, Anaheim, CA, 92806 / ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Call it the battle of the downcast as the Anaheim Ducks host the Carolina Hurricanes on Monday night in Anaheim. Each team comes in having lost an overtime game despite notching the tying goal late in regulation time. Carolina (11-10-7) played Saturday night up the freeway in Los Angeles. The Hurricanes fought off a 2-0 deficit to tie the game in the third period, but the Kings emerged with a 3-2 overtime win. Scott Darling recorded 18 saves in the defeat. The Ducks (12-11-7) dropped a 3-2 home OT loss to Minnesota. Anaheim allowed two quick goals in the second period, then came back to tie the game late in the third period. The Ducks have not won any of their seven overtime contests this year." Yes, we're not happy we didn't win the hockey game, but we got a point and it's time to move on and get ready for Carolina," Anaheim coach Randy Carlyle said. The Ducks have gained points in five of their past six games with two wins and three overtime/shootout defeats." We played good at times," Ducks defenseman Francois Beauchemin said after the Minnesota game. "They capitalized off our mistakes. We didn't make too many, but just the little things." The Hurricanes are 3-4-3 in their last 10 games. Three of their past four went to OT, and they won once in that span." The guys were dialed in right from the drop of the puck," Carolina coach Bill Peters said after the Saturday loss. "I thought we were real good. I thought we had the puck lots. I thought there's lots of things we can build on and move forward with." Down 2-0, Carolina had every reason to go into the third period against Los Angeles discouraged. The Kings are the league's best team at goal differential in the third. The Hurricanes tied the game on two goals in the second half of the period, including one on the power play. Ultimately, it was a long rebound that buried Carolina after it dominated the five-minute extra period. Tanner Pearson shot from a distance, and Darling knocked it out with his blocker. Pearson followed the puck in and shot again, putting it over the goalie." Both teams didn't give up too much. We did a good job of fighting back and just staying with it," Hurricanes center Jordan Staal said. "We've been a little mentally soft the last few games, and tonight we could have easily folded it. The third period was big for us. It was a whole game of working hard, which is what we want to do, and (if) we play like that every night, we're going to be a lot better off." On Monday, Anaheim's approach largely will match what the new-look Kings showed the Hurricanes on Saturday. The Ducks stretch out the ice, using long passes, often bouncing the puck off the boards to get behind the defense. Even depleted with injuries, Anaheim has Corey Perry, Andrew Cogliano and Rickard Rakell to take advantage of any defensive slowness of foot. The Ducks may also see the return of captain Ryan Getzlaf and forward Jakob Silfverberg, according to the Orange County Register. Getzlaf has been sidelined 19 games, since Oct. 29, due to a fractured orbital bone. He skated with the team late last week, but Carlyle did not indicate a specific date for his return at that time. Silfverberg has been sidelined for five games because of an upper-body injury. The Ducks put right winger Jared Boll on waivers Sunday. He has been out since Nov. 7 with a lower-body injury. The club called up defenseman Andy Welinski from San Diego of the American Hockey League. Carolina's offense will counter Anaheim's speed with an aggressive forecheck that redirects the puck back to the center slot area. The Hurricanes were successful at that after a slow start Saturday, outshooting the Kings 9-7 in the first period and 34-21 in the game. They dominated overtime, keeping the puck in the Kings' end for more than two minutes in one stretch. Los Angeles' Jonathan Quick made acrobatic saves late in regulation and again in overtime to give his team a chance to win. The Hurricanes must gather the will to win that has been sapped from them on their California road trip. Against the San Jose Sharks on Thursday, they allowed two power-play and two short-handed goals, including the tying goal late regulation. Against the Kings, they charged back only to lose in OT. The Hurricanes imported a handful of Stanley Cup winners and some veteran leadership this year. The Ducks are slowly recovering a veteran core decimated by injury. Both are mid-pack squads right now. Each hopes that a win Monday could be the start of changing that.
