GAME RECAP
Dec 19, 2017 BOCA RATON, Fla. Lane Kiffin ended his first Florida Atlantic season with a flourish, with Devin Singletary running for 124 yards and three touchdowns as the Owls rolled past Akron 50-3 in the Boca Raton Bowl on Tuesday night. Singletary finished with 32 touchdowns this season for the Owls (11-3), who ended the year on a 10-game winning streak and matched the school record for wins in a season - set during the team's run to the Division I-AA semifinals in 2003. Jeff Driskel threw for 270 yards and two touchdowns, plus ran for two more scores for FAU. The Owls had a massive turnaround in Kiffin's first year and may have an even brighter future. Earlier Tuesday, a person with knowledge of the negotiations told The Associated Press that FAU and Kiffin have agreed to extend his contract six more years through 2027. Kato Nelson threw for 80 yards for Akron (7-7). The game was a perfect microcosm of FAU's season: Once the Owls got rolling, they never stopped. And Kiffin held nothing back. FAU got three touchdowns on fourth-down tries, unsuccessfully tried an onside kick in the first quarter, went for a 2-point conversion in the third quarter to make it 36-3 and even tried a halfback pass in the fourth quarter with a 47-point lead. The Owls didn't punt on their first nine possessions, getting seven touchdowns and two missed field goals out of those. Even on the last play of the game, FAU threw a pass - a 10-yard gain, one that gave the Owls a 582-146 edge in total yards. The Owls left no doubt: Only two bowl games since 2000 had a bigger margin of victory than FAU's 47-point romp in this one. Both teams missed field goals on their opening drive, and after that it was all FAU. Willie Wright's 4-yard scoring grab got the Owls on the board late in the first quarter, and Driskel went in from 3 yards out midway through the second quarter to make it 14-3. Both of those scores came on long drives - one 13 plays for 79 yards, the other 14 plays for 75 yards. The backbreaker might have come late in the half. Getting the ball 87 yards from the end zone with 1:35 left, FAU went to the big play and took total command. Driskel and Kamrin Solomon connected for a 63-yard gain, Singletary ended up going in from 6 yards away and the Owls took a 21-3 lead into the break. BIG PICTUREAkron: The Zips finished the season 7-0 in games where they led at halftime and 0-7 when they trailed at the break. . . . Akron is now 1-2 in bowl games since moving up to the FBS level, winning the 2015 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl and falling in the 2005 Motor City Bowl. FAU: The only players with more rushing touchdowns than Singletary in the last 50 years of major college football were Barry Sanders (37 in 1988) and Montee Ball (33 in 2011). He has 43 TDs in his first two seasons, and had only two in his first three games this year - before getting 30 more in the final 11 games. THE DADSKiffin and Akron coach Terry Bowden are, of course, the sons of football coaching legends. Monte Kiffin and Bobby Bowden were both at the game and took part in the pregame coin toss. ANOTHER STREAKKiffin got his first bowl win in three tries as a head coach, and now has been part of seven consecutive postseason wins. When he was Alabama's offensive coordinator, the Tide won the SEC crown and two College Football Playoff games en route to the national title in 2015, then repeated as SEC champions and won the CFP semifinal last year. (He wasn't there for Alabama's loss to Clemson in the CFP title game. ) This year, FAU won the Conference USA title game and the bowl. UP NEXTAkron: Nebraska's first game under Scott Frost will be at home against the Zips on Sept. 1. FAU: The Owls take their 10-game winning streak into 2018, which starts Sept. 1 at Oklahoma. ---More college football: https://collegefootball. ap. org and https://twitter. com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Dec 19, 2017 PHILADELPHIA -- Two teams in free fall will square off Tuesday night when the Philadelphia 76ers host the Sacramento Kings.Sacramento (9-20) lost 108-93 to the Raptors in Toronto on Sunday, its second consecutive defeat and its third in four games. The Sixers, meanwhile, fell 117-115 to the lowly Bulls in Chicago on Monday. They too have dropped two in a row, as well as six of seven, to slip to 14-15. Philadelphia, which rested center Joel Embiid, is under .500 for the first time since Oct. 30, when it was 3-4.Dario Saric scored a season-high 27 points to lead seven Sixers in double figures, and rookie Ben Simmons finished with 19 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists.Philadelphia turned a 12-point, third-quarter deficit into a 105-96 lead with 5:51 left in the game. The Sixers were still up 107-99 with 3:49 left, but the Bulls reeled off the next 13 points to go ahead for good. The Sixers had a chance to tie it in the closing seconds, but Simmons came up empty on a drive."You get Ben Simmons in a slot drive, I'll take that all day, every day," coach Brett Brown told NBC Sports Philadelphia.Simmons drew contact, to no avail."I knew I was going to take a shot (or was) trying to get to the rim or try to get a foul," he told the same outlet. "It's hard to get a foul in the final quarter of a game like that. The refs aren't going to call anything like that. It was a chance to win, but it didn't happen." Embiid is expected to return against the Kings, but Philadelphia still will be without forward Trevor Booker (ankle) and guard/forward Justin Anderson (shin splints).Philadelphia guard Markelle Fultz, the top overall pick in this year's draft, has not played since the season's fourth game because of a shoulder injury.Sacramento rookie guard De'Aaron Fox, who hit a game-winning jumper in a 109-108 victory over Philadelphia on Nov. 9, did not play Sunday against Toronto because of a bruised right thigh. His status for the Tuesday game was unknown.Veteran center Zach Randolph, who rested against the Raptors, will return to face the 76ers.Bogdan Bogdanovic and Garrett Temple had 18 points each for Sacramento on Sunday, which built a 63-61 halftime lead but faded."It was a high-scoring affair in the first half," Kings coach Dave Joerger said. "We made a lot of shots, they made some shots. They evened their game out by getting to the foul line a lot more than we did. ..."The game got away from us a little bit in the third quarter with some turnovers, but I also have to give them a lot of credit, their second unit came in with a lot of energy defensively, pushed us around the court, pressured some catches ... and kind of got us out of our rhythm." Vince Carter, the 40-year-old ex-Raptor, scored four points in what could have been his final visit to Toronto."I still love being here and there's nothing like it," Carter said afterward.Sacramento has been without rookie center/forward Harry Giles all season. He had surgery on both knees and is out until at least February.Guard Malachi Richardson also sat out the Sunday game with an ankle injury. His status for Tuesday was unclear.

GAME RECAP
Dec 19, 2017 PHILADELPHIA Zach Randolph and Vince Carter have been playing for so long that some of their teammates were toddlers when they broke into the NBA.That double dose of experience worked out quite well for Sacramento on Tuesday night.Randolph scored 27 points and Carter had two key plays late in the game, helping the Kings to a 101-95 victory over the slumping Philadelphia 76ers.Buddy Hield had 24 points and Frank Mason III finished with 16 for Sacramento, which came back from a 16-point second-half deficit.''Zach started us out and really carried us for a while,'' Kings coach Dave Joerger said. ''He was really, really terrific.'' The 36-year-old Randolph was rejuvenated after he rested during Sunday's 108-93 loss at Toronto. He made 12 of 19 shots and grabbed five rebounds.''He's an amazing low-post threat, for a long period of time,'' Philadelphia coach Brett Brown said.Besides putting up solid numbers - Randolph entered leading the team in scoring and rebounding at 15.2 points and 7 boards per game - he is enjoying his role as veteran leader.''We get along well,'' he said. ''These kids are working, they're playing hard, and it's showing on the court. We believe in them.'' Ben Simmons had 13 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists for Philadelphia, which lost for the seventh time in eight games while playing without center Joel Embiid for the second straight night due to a back injury. Robert Covington led the 76ers with 17 points.Philadelphia looked out of sync without Embiid and Sacramento took advantage.Hield gave the Kings a 79-78 lead with a 3-pointer with 9:48 remaining. Carter made a full-court outlet pass to Garrett Temple for a layup that made it 92-86 Sacramento with 4:18 left. The 40-year-old Carter made another crucial play down the stretch, hustling for an offensive rebound that led to Randolph's jumper with 1:59 to play.''Coach trusts me to be solid and consistent, not make mistakes and help our guys when I can,'' Carter said. ''I've been in big situations so I enjoy being on the court.'' Simmons answered with a driving basket that made it 96-92, but he couldn't convert the free throw after being fouled and the rally fizzled from there.''I don't think we've been focusing down the stretch - missing shots, not calling the right plays,'' Simmons said. ''It's just little things like that. It comes down to us focusing, and making sure we're committed to defense and offense at the same time.'' EMBIID'S ABSENCEEmbiid did not travel with the team to Chicago for Monday's 117-115 loss to the Bulls. He was expected to play against the Kings on the second night of back-to-back games, but Brown said the team's medical staff advised him to keep the 7-foot center on the sideline. The injury has kept Embiid out for four of the last six games. Brown said Embiid's back ''is still a little bit sore.'' BROWN ON OKAFORJahlil Okafor, whom Philadelphia traded to Brooklyn earlier this month, made headlines in New York on Tuesday for saying he was glad to be with an organization that had ''an actual NBA coaching staff.'' ''Jahlil knows what we did here,'' Brown said before the loss. ''It's a young person who gave a quote. ... I think everybody understands how we treat people here and the attention he received while he was here.'' TIP-INSKings: G George Hill (illness) did not play. ... Malachi Richardson had three points in 19 minutes after not playing Sunday due to an ankle injury. ... G De'Aaron Fox was back in the lineup after missing Sunday's game at Toronto due to a bruised right thigh, but he didn't return after re-injuring it in the first half. He had two points in 11 minutes.76ers: Embiid last played in Philadelphia's nationally televised game against Oklahoma City on Friday night, finishing with 34 points, eight rebounds and six assists in the 76ers' 119-117 triple-overtime loss. ... Prior to the game, the 76ers honored Philadelphia native and South Carolina women's basketball coach Dawn Staley. The Gamecocks play at Temple on Thursday night. ... J. J. Redick left after injuring his hamstring. He had eight points in 15 minutes.UP NEXTKings: Finish four-game road trip at Brooklyn on Wednesday night.Sixers: Host Toronto on Thursday night in the first game of a home-and-home series. Philadelphia will play at the Raptors on Saturday night.

GAME PREVIEW
Dec 19, 2017 WASHINGTON -- New Orleans Pelicans center DeMarcus Cousins and Washington Wizards guard John Wall have a bond that goes back to their playing days at the University of Kentucky. The pair has something else in common: Neither of their teams can quite get into a positive groove this season. The Wizards (16-14) enter the first meeting of the season against the Pelicans (15-15) coming off a 106-99 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday. Washington is 5-5 over its past 10 games with a handful of spotty performances mixed in with some uplifting outings. There is no shame in falling to the reigning Eastern Conference champions, especially since the Cavaliers have won 18 of 19 games and LeBron James is once again playing as a Most Valuable Player candidate. Tied after the second and third quarters, Washington lost steam late, scoring only 16 points in the final period while James finished with his fourth triple-double in five games."Shots just didn't go in," said Washington's Bradley Beal, who had 27 points in 43 minutes but finished 1 of 6 from the field in the fourth quarter. "I feel like there were a lot of good looks, a lot of open threes, a lot of easy ones at the rim. A few turnovers that hurt us. All in all, we feel like we had good shots, they just didn't drop." Injuries explain part of Washington's uneven season and why Beal played heavy minutes against Cleveland.Wall had 15 points and 10 rebounds in his third game back after missing nine games due to a knee injury. Washington played without Otto Porter (hip) and opened the second half with its other starting forward, Markieff Morris, being checked out after taking a blow to his neck.Yet maintaining effort and focus, particularly on the defensive end, also is playing a role. Cavaliers center Kevin Love scored 25 points and sank four of Cleveland's 14 3-pointers.Another challenge comes Tuesday against the Pelicans in the form of Cousins and fellow star big man Anthony Davis."I ain't going to lie, it's going to be a bloodbath, probably," Wizards center Marcin Gortat said after practice Monday, via the Washington Times. "It's going to be a very, very tough matchup for me and (Morris), for all of our bigs. It's going to be a challenge. These two are hands down the best in the league." There is no arguing that last statement. Cousins ranks top five in the league in scoring (26.2) and rebounding (12.2) while averaging 1.5 blocked shots per game. Davis isn't far behind in either category with 25.2 points and 10.6 rebounds.Yet there is a similar sideways story with New Orleans, which has alternated losses and wins over its past nine games. Part of the tale involves the grand experiment of playing two big men together in the increasingly small-ball NBA world. Recently a primary concern involves the defense. The Pelicans have surrendered at 100 points in 11 consecutive games.New Orleans fell in overtime to the Denver Nuggets 117-111 on Friday despite leading by 10 points entering the fourth quarter. Cousins, an unrestricted free agent next summer, scored 29 points.Davis, who played the final 3:33 of regulation and the overtime period despite rolling his left ankle, had 28 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks."I just wanted to play," Davis said.Denver sank 16 3-pointers while New Orleans committed 19 turnovers."We had turnovers and we have to run them off the line, they got hot from three," Davis said.New Orleans is tied for 27th in the NBA with an average of 15.9 turnovers per game. With Wall running the floor, Washington excels at turning mistakes into points."That's been our Achilles heel the whole season," Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said. "We must learn to protect the ball; we have way too many live turnovers. You know, there is just no way of defending a live turnover."

GAME RECAP
Dec 19, 2017 WASHINGTON Bradley Beal and the Washington Wizards put away the New Orleans Pelicans with one impressive stretch.Beal scored 14 of his 26 points in the third quarter, helping the Wizards top the Pelicans 116-106 on Tuesday night.Mike Scott had a season-high 24 points in 23 minutes and John Wall added 18 points and 10 assists as Washington won for the third time in four games. Marcin Gortat had 10 points, 14 rebounds and three blocked shots.New Orleans got another big game from Anthony Davis and DeMarcus Cousins, but the Pelicans dropped their second straight. Davis scored 37 points, and Cousins finished with 26 points and 13 rebounds.''They're great players,'' Washington coach Scott Brooks said. ''They're two All-Stars, two future Hall of Famers, but I thought our guys set the tone in the first quarter. It started with defensive stops.'' The Wizards led 36-19 after one and ran their lead out to 25 before the Pelicans closed to 61-55 at halftime. After New Orleans tied it at 61 early in the third quarter, Washington pulled away with a 24-5 run.''You may be able to do that one time in an NBA game where you're down 20, 25 points to be able to work your way back all the way to a tie,'' Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said. ''But you give them separation again and the chances are not very good that you're going to do that.'' Beal added two 3-pointers to make it 91-68 just before the end of the third.''The other team just came out and they wanted it more,'' Cousins said. ''I feel like we just kind of went through the motions tonight as a team. They just wanted it more, period. No effort, no effort.'' TIP-INSPelicans: Davis, who turned his left ankle late in the fourth quarter of Friday night's loss at Denver, injured his right wrist late in the second quarter. X-rays were taken at halftime, and he returned after missing the first four minutes of the third quarter. ... Gentry was assessed a technical foul midway through the second quarter.Wizards: F Otto Porter sat out for the second straight game with a bruised right hip. ... In the first half, New Orleans shot 24 free throws and Washington just five.TALKING TRASHWall, who played with Cousins at Kentucky, knows his friend likes to trash talk.''He's probably the worst in the league,'' Wall laughed. ''But that's him. That's how Boogie is. Boogie likes to talk junk.'' Just then, Cousins appeared on the threshold of the Wizards' locker room to remind Wall they had postgame plans and not to speak negatively about him.GREAT SCOTTScott was 11 for 15 from the field. The reserve forward has made 28 of his 39 shots (71.8 percent) in his last three games.''I have it going right now,'' Scott said.TIMELY TIME OUTThe Wizards' big third-quarter run came after Brooks called a timeout after New Orleans tied it at 61. He preferred not to share the message he gave his team.''I don't remember,'' Brooks said. ''I don't know. I do, but I don't know.'' UP NEXTPelicans: At Orlando on Friday.Wizards: At Brooklyn on Friday.---For more NBA coverage: https://apnews.com/tag/NBAbasketball

GAME PREVIEW
Dec 19, 2017 MILWAUKEE -- Dwyane Wade is expected to be back in the lineup Tuesday night when the Cleveland Cavaliers oppose the Milwaukee Bucks at the Bradley Center.Wade, who played in the arena while at Marquette, sat out the Cavs' game Sunday at Washington. It was the second half of a back-to-back set, and coach Tyronn Lue is managing the 35-year-old's workload.Tristan Thompson, who had been managing a left calf injury, played 14 minutes against Washington and is expected to see against the Bucks, too, as the Cavaliers (23-8) try to close the gap on the Boston Celtics (26-7) for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. The 106-99 victory over the Wizards was Cleveland's fifth win in a row, and it featured LeBron James' third consecutive triple-double. James finished with 20 points, 12 rebounds and 15 assists in 41 minutes, but that stat line wasn't enough to impress him."I actually played pretty bad tonight," James said. "I wasn't as strong with the ball: I had six turnovers. Kind of lazy with the ball, at times. And my teammates did a great job bailing me out." The Cavaliers have won 18 of their past 19 games, making them the league's hottest team at the moment. However, they have hardly practiced at all during that stretch, with Lue choosing to focus more on film work than running the NBA's oldest team through drills."He trusts in us that we're going to get our work done even when we're not practicing, which we do," James told the Cleveland Plain-Dealer. "Guys are in here on off days every single time we have an off day. When we don't practice, guys are in here working on their game, and he just trusts us that we're going to be ready to go in the games, because we don't have much practice time."That's huge for any team, but especially for a veteran ballclub, that you have a coach that trusts you." James is third in the league with an average of 27.8 points per game. In second is Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo (29.8 ppg). Antetokounmpo is averaging 32.7 points and 12.7 rebounds (4.3 offensive) with 5.0 assists and 2.3 steals during the Bucks' current losing streak, which grew to three games after a 115-111 loss Saturday at Houston.Milwaukee is still reeling from a list of injuries, especially on its bench. Mirza Teletovic (lungs) and Matthew Dellavedova (knee) both have been out for a month. Jason Terry has been sidelined because of a strained calf, and now Tony Snell has missed five games because of left knee tendinitis."Tony's a big part of what we do," Bucks forward Khris Middleton said. "People sleep on him all the time, thinking he's just that fifth guy out there. He's a great player for us. He spaces the floor, he's a smart player. You can't relax on him. ... We can't wait to get him back." The absence of that group has decimated Milwaukee's 3-point shooting. He Bucks were hitting 36.5 percent of their 24.3 attempts per game before the injury bug. Now with Snell out as well, they have dropped to 20th in the league with a 35.5 percent 3-point shooting rate."Right now for some reason we're just not making open shots, but we've got to keep getting those shots and hopefully they turn into makes," Bucks coach Jason Kidd said. The Cavs took the first two meetings with the Bucks this season and have won five in a row against Milwaukee overall.

GAME RECAP
Dec 19, 2017 MILWAUKEE The Milwaukee Bucks have blown big fourth-quarter leads far too many times this season, leading to disheartening losses. The Bucks wasted another sizeable advantage in the final period Tuesday night against the Cleveland Cavaliers, but fought back this time to capture a 119-116 win.''It was a big step for our team. It shows maturity,'' said Giannis Antetokounmpo, who led the Bucks with 27 points. ''Usually, in a situation like that, we give the game away.'' Eric Bledsoe scored 26 points for Milwaukee, which ended a five-game losing streak to Cleveland. Khris Middleton had 18 points and 10 assists, and Malcolm Brogdon finished with 16 points.''We kind of bent but we didn't break,'' Bucks coach Jason Kidd said. ''Giannis made plays down the stretch. We stayed together. We are playing against one of the best teams in the world.'' LeBron James scored 39 points for Cleveland, which lost for just the second time in its last 20 games. James had seven assists but grabbed just one rebound in the waning seconds. Kevin Love finished with 21 points. After a slow start, the Bucks got to the Cavaliers for 39 second-quarter points. Milwaukee cracked the 100-point barrier early in the fourth, but then stalled.Milwaukee led 103-83 when Cleveland launched a furious comeback with James on the bench. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Dwyane Wade put the Cavaliers up 107-105, capping a 24-3 run and giving the visitors their first lead since the second quarter.''Obviously, tonight (Wade) showed what he's capable of still doing,'' James said. ''It's a luxury having a guy like that coming off the bench.'' A 3-pointer by Brogdon put the Bucks back in front with 3:38 remaining. A traditional three-point play by James put the Cavaliers ahead 113-112 with about two minutes left.Tony Snell responded with a 3-pointer for Milwaukee with 58.9 seconds remaining. After a Cleveland miss, Antetokounmpo grabbed a loose ball, hit a short shot and was fouled. His free throw gave the Bucks a 117-113 lead with 5.9 seconds to go.Wade finished with 14 points for Cleveland, and Jeff Green had 13.Milwaukee took its first lead early in the second quarter at 41-40 with Love and James on the bench. The Bucks remained hot even after the duo returned and at one point extended their advantage to 14. They led 69-58 at the half, sparked by 17 points from Middleton, who had a four-point play, as well as a 14-2 advantage in fast-break points.UNTIMELY FOULSKyle Korver fouled Antetokounmpo as he attempted a desperation 3-pointer at the end of the first quarter. Antetokounmpo made all three free throws to pull Milwaukee within four points. Wade fouled Antetokounmpo with less than one second left in the third. He sank both free throws to give the Bucks a 15-point lead.BYE-BYE BRADLEY CENTER?Barring a playoff matchup, Wade likely played his last game at the Bradley Center, where he starred for Marquette, which shares the facility with the Bucks. The teams will move into a new arena next season.''I've had a lot of amazing moments here,'' Wade said. ''Every time I come here and look up and see that jersey up there in the rafters, I definitely know I did something special in this city and this arena. If this was the last game, I need a piece of this building because it's very special to me and to my basketball career.'' TIP-INSCavaliers: Wade was 5 for 10 from the field after sitting out Sunday night's game against Washington to rest. ''Something with his knee has been going on, and if he needs to take off, then we understand that,'' coach Tyronn Lue said. ... The Cavs scored at least 100 points for the 25th straight game.Bucks: Jabari Parker, who is recovering from ACL surgery on his left knee, practiced with Milwaukee's G League affiliate for the second consecutive day. Parker, who also tore his left ACL in December 2014, is not expected to be back on the court for the Bucks until February. ... Matthew Dellavedova, who missed 15 consecutive games with left knee tendinitis, returned to the active roster, as did Snell (left patellar tendinitis) and Jason Terry (left calf strain). ... G Sean Kilpatrick, signed to a two-way contract on Monday, dressed for the game. Kilpatrick appeared in 16 games for Brooklyn before being waived on Dec. 7.UP NEXTCavaliers: At home against Chicago on Thursday night. Cleveland won the first two games of the season series.Bucks: Host Charlotte on Friday night before playing the Hornets on the road on Saturday.

GAME PREVIEW
Time: 6:30 PM EST CINCINNATI -- The ninth-ranked Xavier Musketeers and the Marshall Thundering Herd are coming off exhilarating but taxing victories on Saturday, leaving barely two days to recoup before facing each other on Tuesday night at Cintas Center. The Musketeers rallied from a 22-point, second-half deficit to defeat East Tennessee State 68-66, while the Thundering Herd outlasted Ohio 99-96 in overtime." We were in a war on Saturday," Xavier coach Chris Mack said, "and we will find ourselves in another war (Tuesday) night." Xavier (10-1), which has won five consecutive games, had most of last week off for semester exams. Then the Musketeers were pounced on early by East Tennessee State before staging the largest comeback in Cintas Center history, capped by Trevon Bluiett's game-winner with seven seconds left." We have to learn from it," Mack said. "Every game isn't going to be a 15-nothing run to start the game. We have to gut some out." Marshall's duo of guard Jon Elmore and forward Ajdin Penava, both juniors, produced memorable stat-lines in the win over Ohio. Elmore had only the fifth triple-double in program history with 20 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists, while Penava scored 33 points and added 15 rebounds, nine blocks and three steals." I don't know in the history of Marshall that I've ever seen a stat line like that," Marshall coach Dan D'Antoni said, according to the Herald-Dispatch. Marshall (8-3) has won four consecutive games and leads the all-time series 13-11. The teams have played only twice since 1958. Xavier has won the last two meetings, including the most recent one, 69-46 at Cintas Center on Dec. 30, 2004. Mack was impressed by what he saw on film from the Thundering Herd." I love the way they play offense," he said. "Elmore is a special player. He's as adept shooting threes as he is getting to the foul line. He's surrounded by some really skilled personnel." Up until Saturday's slugfest with East Tennessee State, the Musketeers' offense had been rolling. Xavier still ranks fifth in the nation in offensive efficiency, according to kenpom.com. The Musketeers lead the Big East Conference while ranking third nationally in field-goal percentage. Xavier reached the Elite Eight last year and is ranked in the top 10 in both major polls for the third straight season. However, the Musketeers could have some depth concerns on Tuesday. J. P. Macura, the team's second-leading scorer and emotional leader, left the Saturday game with an apparent concussion. Kaiser Gates also exited injured. Reserve freshman guards Paul Scruggs and Elias Harden didn't play Saturday for disciplinary reasons." The freshmen practiced on Monday, the other two guys did not," Mack said. "We will see what happens over the past 24 hours." Xavier has won 38 consecutive nonconference home games at Cintas Center dating to the 2012-13 season. The Musketeers' only loss this season was to undefeated and third-ranked Arizona State. Marshall is unranked but has the 10th-best scoring offense in the country, averaging 90.2 points." We have a lot of respect for Marshall," Mack said. "They do a great job of spacing the floor and playing with space. They are difficult to prepare for. It's a big challenge."

GAME RECAP
Kerem Kanter had 16 points and 13 rebounds and No. 9 Xavier, playing the second half without three starters, held off Marshall 81-77 on Tuesday night. Xavier led by as many as 23 points but was outscored 50-34 in the second half. C. J. Burks buried a 3-pointer with 21 seconds left to make it a five-point game, but Kanter sealed the Musketeers' victory with two free throws 10 seconds later. Marshall's Jon Elmore hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Xavier didn't have starters J. P. Macura (blurred vision) and Kaiser Gates (dizziness) the entire game as both were being held out for precautionary measures. Freshman Naji Marshall, who was moved into the starting lineup, took a hard fall near halftime and did not play the second half. Tyrique Jones added 14 points and 11 boards for Xavier while Sean O'Mara and Quentin Goodin chipped in 14 points each as Xavier (11-1) foiled the Thundering Herd's bid to claim a first Top 10 win since 2006. Although Marshall (8-4) entered the game with the nation's eighth-ranked offense (90.2 points), Xavier held the normally frenetic juggernaut to a season-low 27 first-half points. The Herd found its rhythm after the break. A 10-0 run set the tone for Marshall's comeback bid, but the Musketeers persevered despite 29.2 percent second-half shooting. Ajdin Penava led Marshall with 25 points. Elmore entered the game averaging 24.2 points, good for third place in Division I, but finished with 16. Burks added 18. BIG PICTUREMarshall's four-game winning streak was snapped by Xavier, its only ranked opponent thus far. The Thundering Herd were out-rebounded 37-24. Xavier finished its non-conference home slate with a 9-0 record including back-to-back wins over ranked Baylor and Cincinnati teams. The Musketeers also capped a six-game home stand on a high note and extended their non-conference home winning streak to 39. UP NEXTMarshall returns to campus for a four-game home stand against Eastern Kentucky, Southern Miss, Louisiana Tech and Western Kentucky. The Thundering Herd are 7-0 at home. Xavier travels to Northern Iowa for Friday's non-conference finale. The Musketeers are 1-0 in true road games thus far, beating Wisconsin in Madison in November.---More college basketball: http://collegebasketball.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/-Top25

GAME RECAP
Oshae Brissett scored 25 points, Frank Howard added 18 and Syracuse outlasted stubborn Buffalo 81-74 on Tuesday. Tyus Battle added 13 points and Matthew Moyer chipped in with 12 points and nine rebounds for the Orange (10-1). Nick Perkins led the Bulls (7-4) with 18 points and Wes Clark added 15 in his first game for Buffalo. Clark, a transfer from Missouri, hadn't played in nearly two years. He left the Tigers in February 2016 for what he said were personal reasons. The NCAA cleared Clark to play early Tuesday after his grades were posted and submitted to the NCAA. Leading scorer C. J. Massingburg was held to 14 points, six below his season average, on 2-of-13 shooting. Buffalo fell behind 44-31 with 16:39 to go, but an 8-0 run, fueled by Jeremy Harris' floater and 3-pointer, pulled the Bulls to 44-39. A floater by Battle ended the run, but Buffalo pulled to within four on a goaltending call on Syracuse center Paschal Chukwu on a shot by Nick Perkins. Buffalo took a 53-52 lead on a short jumper by Clark with under nine minutes to go. The teams then went back and forth. A baseline jumper by Perkins tied the score at 62. A layup and foul shot by Brissett gave the Orange a 65-62 lead and a short jumper by Marek Dolezaj extended the Orange lead to 67-62. Two straight turnovers by Howard led to buckets by Massinburg and Clark and gave Buffalo a 68-67 lead with three minutes to go, but a 3-pointer by Howard, two foul shots by Battle and a Howard layup gave Syracuse a 74-68 lead. Buffalo got no closer than four the rest of the way. Syracuse shot 52 percent in the first half, but the Bulls hung tough, thanks to Clark's 11 points that included 3-of-5 shooting from beyond the arc and a 2-pointer at the buzzer. Perkins had seven, and leading scorer C. J. Massinburg had just six, all from the foul line. He was 0 for 5 from the field. Buffalo shot just 30 percent from the field and committed eight turnovers, which the Orange converted into 11 points en route to a 36-27 halftime margin. Moyer almost had a double-double to lead Syracuse in the first 20 minutes. The freshman had 10 points, including two putbacks and a sensational baseline slam, and eight rebounds. Brissett chipped in with eight points. The Orange were uncharacteristically efficient from the 3, making 3 of 7. BIG PICTUREBuffalo: It was a great effort by Buffalo, and the Bulls go on the road with some confidence, bolstered by the return of Clark. Syracuse: The Orange were severely tested by Buffalo, perhaps a letdown after their comeback win over Georgetown. Syracuse has another tough test Friday against a good St. Bonaventure team. UP NEXTBuffalo has a quick turnaround as the Bulls travel to No. 8 Texas A&M Thursday. Syracuse continues its four-game home stand Friday against another upstate New York team, St. Bonaventure.

GAME RECAP
All-American Bonzie Colson had his 30th career double-double - a career-high 37 points with 11 rebounds - and Notre Dame held off Dartmouth 97-87 on Tuesday. Fellow senior Matt Farrell added 22 points for the Irish (9-3), who fell out of the Top 25 for the first time this season following an 80-77 overtime loss to Indiana last Saturday. Rex Pflueger and Martinas Geben added 13 points each. A pair of 3-pointers and eight points total by the 6-foot-6 Colson highlighted an 11-0 Irish run over 1:51 for a 44-33 lead, their largest of the first half. The Irish led 46-39 at halftime as Aaryn Rai buried his third 3-pointer and Dartmouth's eighth 3 of the half that saw six ties and seven lead changes. Both teams shot over 50 percent, with the Big Green a sizzling 53.3 on 3-pointers. The Irish hit nine of their first 12 shots of the second half and used a 13-6 run, highlighted by consecutive slams by Pflueger and Colson and ending with a 3-pointer by T. J. Gibbs, for a 66-50 lead with 12:06 remaining. Miles Wright had 15 points on five 3-pointers to lead Dartmouth (3-6). Rai and Chris Knight scored 14 points apiece, Will Emery had 12 and Brendan Barry 10 with 12 rebounds. BIG PICTUREDartmouth: With a roster that includes five freshmen and five sophomores, the Big Green were picked to finish seventh in the eight-team Ivy League. The game with Notre Dame finished a 1-4 stretch away from home. Notre Dame: After reaching No. 5 after winning the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, the Irish had lost three of their last five. UP NEXTDartmouth: Big Green return home to face Bryant Friday afternoon. Notre Dame: Irish host Southeastern Louisiana Thursday night.

GAME RECAP
Marcquise Reed scored a career-high 25 points including four second-half 3-pointers to lead Clemson to a 64-48 win over South Carolina on Tuesday night. The Tigers (10-1) crushed their bitter in-state rival by closing down on almost all of the Gamecocks' shots outside the paint. South Carolina (9-2) scored 28 of its 48 points in the paint, shooting just 35 percent (19 of 54) from the field. Clemson never trailed in the game, but couldn't put the Gamecocks away either until the second half. Reed hit four of his five 3-pointers in the second half, including the 3 with 11:54 left that finally pushed Clemson's lead into double-digits for good at 43-32. Chris Silva had 12 points and nine rebounds for South Carolina, and was the only Gamecock in double figures. Gabe DeVoe scored 12 points and Shelton Mitchell added 10 for Clemson. And at the end, the crowd at Littlejohn Coliseum started chanting ''just like football,'' reminding South Carolina of Clemson's 34-10 win last month in that sport. BIG PICTURESouth Carolina: This was an ugly loss in an important game both emotionally and for recruiting for the Gamecocks. The theme in all three of South Carolina's losses has been poor shooting. They have shot at least 45 percent in each win and under 38 percent in each loss ... The 48 points were South Carolina's lowest in the Clemson rivalry since losing 58-39 to the then No. 8 Tigers in 1996. Clemson: South Carolina's defense is designed to allow some open looks from 3, and Clemson took advantage, making 8 of 20 from behind the arc. Reed was 5 of 9 on 3-pointers ... The Tigers received the third highest number of votes for a team that didn't make in the Top 25 this week. Clemson has not been ranked since January 2010, the season before Brownell took over. UP NEXTSouth Carolina: The Gamecocks host Division II Limestone on Dec. 27, then open up Southeastern Conference play Dec. 31 at Mississippi. Clemson: The Tigers host Louisiana Lafayette on Friday afternoon, then host North Carolina State to open up Atlantic Conference play Dec. 30.---More college basketball: http://collegebasketball.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/-Top25---Follow Jeffrey Collins at http://twitter.com/JSCollins . Kahlil Dukes scored 21 and hit a key 3-pointer with 2:17 left to help Niagara hold off Cleveland State 79-77 on Tuesday night. The teams traded 11-1 runs in the final 7 1/2 minutes. The Purple Eagles (6-6) used their run to build a 73-62 lead and the Vikings' response cut the deficit back to one with 3 1/2 minutes left. Dukes' 3-pointer ended Cleveland State's rally, making it 77-73. Niagara made 2 of 4 free throws to retain the lead and Marvin Prochet's block of Stefan Kenic and steal from Tyree Appleby - both in the final seconds - sealed the win. Matt Scott added 14 points and 13 rebounds and Prochet had 10 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles. Jamarcus Hairston had a career-high 17 points, and Anthony Wright and Kenny Carpenter added 16 each for the Vikings (3-7).

Jermaine Crumpton scored 16 points as Canisius built a double-digit lead in the first half and used it to hold off Elon, 67-51 in its final nonconference home game Tuesday night. Elon entered the game having won four of its last five games, but Canisius held the Phoenix to just 20 of 54 shooting from the field, including 8 of 26 shooting from beyond the three-point arc. Brian Dawkins converted a layup and drilled a 3-pointer in the final minute of the first half to cut the Canisius lead to 10 points at intermission, but the Griffins (5-7) pushed it to 17 points five minutes into the final period. Takal Molson hit a pair of free throws with just under four minutes to play that gave the Griffins a 22-point advantage. Malik Johnson added 13 points for Canisius and Molson contributed 11. Dawkins finished with 13 points for Elon (7-5).

GAME RECAP
Kam Williams and Keita Bates-Diop each scored 17 points as Ohio State won its fifth straight game with a 94-65 win over The Citadel on Tuesday night. C. J. Jackson added 13 points and Andrew Dakich 10 for the Buckeyes (10-3). Kaiden Rice had 14 points, and Alex Reed and Zane Najdawi added 11 apiece for the Bulldogs (5-7). Ohio State led 44-23 at the half and built the margin to 39 at 88-49 with five minutes left. The Bulldogs were 12th in the nation in scoring at 89.3 points per game but much of that is predicated on getting points from their press and hitting shots. They had neither working when OSU took a 21-point halftime lead. BIG PICTUREThe Citadel: The Bulldogs usually start two freshmen and two sophomores and have had as many as four frosh players on the court at the same time, so there continues to be growing pains. Six of the 12 players are freshmen. The Citadel is one of seven Division I schools without a senior on the roster. Ohio State: After making 3 of 14 3-pointers in the previous game against Appalachian State, the Buckeyes made some improvement by hitting 13 of 35 (37 percent) vs. the Bulldogs. UP NEXTThe Citadel: The Bulldogs take a holiday break before beginning Southern Conference play Dec. 30 with a home game against Western Carolina. The Citadel, picked to finish in a tie for seventh in the conference in the coaches' preseason poll, is 4-2 at home. Ohio State: The Buckeyes will take a major step in the level of competition when the play No. 5 North Carolina (10-1) at New Orleans in the CBS Sports Classic on Saturday. Ohio State's only game against a ranked opponent was an 86-59 loss to then-No. 17 Gonzaga on Nov. 23 in Portland, Oregon.

Desonta Bradford scored 21 points on Tuesday night and East Tennessee State led for the final 12 minutes in an 81-73 win over Detroit Mercy. Jalan McCloud added 14 points for the Buccaneers (7-4), who bounced back from their first loss in the last six. ETSU trailed 39-34 at the break but took the lead for good at 53-50 on a Jason Williams 3-pointer and pulled away with 10 straight to lead 67-55 on McCloud's layup with seven minutes to go. The Titans (4-8) got as close as 67-62 on Cole Long's 3 with five minutes left, but the Bucs stretched the lead back to 11, and Detroit lost its sixth straight. ETSU made just 3 of 14 from 3-point range and got outrebounded 33-31 but committed just seven turnovers to Detroit's 16. Kameron Chatman had 20 points and 10 rebounds, Corey Allen added 14 and Long finished with a career-high 10 for the Titans.

GAME PREVIEW
Time: 8:00 PM EST No. 11 Wichita State will try to bounce back from a loss to Oklahoma when Arkansas State visits Charles Koch Arena in Wichita, Kan., on Tuesday. The Shockers (8-2) fell 91-83 to the Sooners on Saturday, snapping Wichita State's four-game winning streak and dropping coach Gregg Marshall's team from No. 3 to No. 11 in the polls. Wichita State ran into a buzz saw in Oklahoma freshman guard Trae Young. The nation's leading scorer poured in 21 points in the first half as the Sooners built a 15-point halftime lead. Wichita State got back within six in the second half but couldn't string together enough quality possessions to complete the comeback, despite a 20-point, 12-rebound performance off the bench from Darral Willis Jr." It was one of those days where we couldn't sustain the positive plays," Marshall said. On Monday, Marshall acknowledged his team's shortcomings in the defeat while also praising Oklahoma. He encouraged his team to move forward with a strong performance against Arkansas State." Got to get the bad taste out of your mouth," Marshall said at a Monday press conference. "Obviously, Oklahoma was tremendous on Saturday, and we weren't. We've got to play well, hopefully get a win." Arkansas State (4-7) is coming off a dramatic 64-63 win at Florida Atlantic on Saturday. Rashad Lindsey's basket as time expired gave the Red Wolves their first road win of the season." This is a long time coming," Arkansas State coach Mike Balado said after the win over the Owls. "These guys have been resilient and trusting in the process by understanding what we are trying to do. These guys want to win so bad for the community and university, so it's been hard losing these close games on the road." I'm glad that we got our first road win, but I'm also glad we did it in this demeanor. We dealt with more adversity tonight because we couldn't buy a free throw for some reason." The Red Wolves went 7 of 17 from the foul line against Florida Atlantic. Lindsey hit just one of his first nine shots but came through on Arkansas State's final possession." That was probably my fourth or fifth career game-winner, but that one felt the best," said Lindsey, a senior guard. "I have to give a big shout out to my team, because they all played well. I made the last shot, but this is about my team. When the shot came, I felt like I hadn't hit a shot the whole game, but my teammates were telling me to stay with it because they believed in me. Deven (Simms) came up to me and said he knew I was going to hit a big shot for us." Balado added, "Everybody played great tonight and everybody gave something. (Lindsey) didn't have a great game until the last few minutes, but I had confidence in him like I do all these guys, and he stepped up and made the play. I'm happy for our guys because they deserved this win."

GAME RECAP
Samajae Haynes-Jones came off the bench to score 27 points and spur No. 11 Wichita State past feisty Arkansas State 89-80 on Tuesday night. Haynes-Jones, who had scored a combined one point in his last three games, had 18 second-half points for the Shockers (9-2), whose lead was trimmed as low as four in the final 3 minutes. Landry Shamet scored 15 of his 18 points in the second half for Wichita State, while Darral Willis added 14. Deven Simms scored 30 points for Arkansas State (4-8), a 29-point underdog. Ty Cockfield had 16 points for the Red Wolves. The Shockers trailed 57-48 with 17:11 remaining before rallying behind Haynes-Jones and Shamet. Arkansas State fired its way to a 50-44 halftime lead, marking the third straight home game in which the Shockers allowed at least 50 first-half points. The Red Wolves shot 62.1 percent in the half and were 10 of 16 from the 3-point line, including a missed desperation shot at the buzzer. Simms (15 points) and Cockfield (13 points) were a combined 10 of 15 from the field in the half. BIG PICTURE:Arkansas State: The Red Wolves are done with difficult non-conference road games and gained some confidence with a competitive effort. Wichita State: The Shockers did not ease concerns about their defense, a program pillar, but avoided a terrible loss. UP NEXTArkansas State: The Red Wolves begin a stretch of three straight home games with Culver-Stockton on Friday. Wichita State: The Shockers play host to Florida Gulf Coast on Friday night.---More college basketball: http://collegebasketball.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Time: 8:00 PM EST LUBBOCK, Texas -- Texas Tech seems to be using the calm before the Big 12 storm to put together a highlight reel of dunks. Last week, Red Raiders forward Zach Smith sent a ripple through the college basketball world with a dramatic windmill dunk in his team's 82-53 victory over Kennessaw State on Wednesday. Then on Saturday, guard Keenan Evans threw an alley-oop pass off the backboard that forward Zhaire Smith slammed home on Texas Tech's way to a 73-53 win against Rice. Those plays indicated that the No. 21 Red Raiders (9-1) are enjoying their tuneup for Big 12 action, which begins at the end of the month. Before that, Texas Tech hosts Florida Atlantic (6-4) on Tuesday night at the United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders overcame a slow start offensively as they shot just 36 percent from the field in the first half, and produced a poor 7-for-21 performance from the free-throw line in the win over Rice. But Texas Tech's defense wore down the Owls as it won the second half, 44-28. Although the Red Raiders made the most of a throwback game in which they wore 1990's-era uniforms and played in their old home, the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum, coach Chris Beard acknowledged his team didn't earn many style points in its latest victory." I kind of sense it in (the postgame press conference) even you guys don't think we played great," Beard said. "But that's expectations. There was a time not too long ago where, if Texas Tech won a game by 20-something points, it would probably be a great night. We're starting to raise the expectations of our team and I love it." Texas Tech will finish a quirky portion of the schedule in which it hosts three straight teams with Owl mascots. After dismissing the Kennesaw State and Rice Owls last week, the Florida Atlantic Owls get their chance to outwit the Red Raiders. On paper, Florida Atlantic poses the biggest challenge as its current RPI of 183 is significantly higher than Texas Tech's two opponents last week. But the Owls have had mixed results in nonconference play so far. Florida Atlantic posted a 92-88 win against Florida Gulf Coast during a recent four-game winning streak that ended on Saturday in a 64-63 home loss to Arkansas State. Texas Tech, which has 10 players averaging better than 13 minutes per game, has been able to wear down most of its nonconference opponents. However, Florida Atlantic can counter with good depth as the Owls have used an 8 to 10 man rotation. Guard Gerdarius Troutman is averaging 14 points to lead a trio of Owls scoring in double-digits. Florida Atlantic 7-foot center Ronald Delph is close to posting a double-double per game at 13.3 points and 9.7 rebounds. On the defensive end, the Owls will try to slow down Evans, who leads the Red Raiders with 17.2 points and 3.7 assists per game. But Texas Tech has shown it can produce on offense even if Evans doesn't score, as was the case in the Red Raiders' 103-69 win over Savannah State in November. Texas Tech has nine players who have scored in double digits at least once this season.

GAME RECAP
Keenan Evans led six players in double figures with 15 points and No. 21 Texas Tech blew out Florida Atlantic in the second half of a 90-54 victory Tuesday night. Davide Moretti scored 14 points, Tommy Hamilton IV had 13 and Niem Stevenson made four of six 3-point attempts for all 12 of his points as the Red Raiders (10-1) outscored the Owls 50-21 after halftime. Texas Tech has won four straight games since a loss at Seton Hall that knocked the Red Raiders out of the Top 25 just after they got in. They returned to the rankings after an overtime win over then-No. 22 Nevada and have followed that with three straight victories by at least 20 points. Justin Massey led Florida Atlantic (6-5) with 17 points and Ronald Delph added 16. Massey was held to three points in the second half, when the Owls shot 28 percent (8 of 29). The Red Raiders took control with a 25-6 run in the second half for a 70-43 lead with 10 minutes remaining. Jarrett Culver scored 11 points and Zhaire Smith added 10 for Texas Tech. Evans had six of the Red Raiders' 20 assists, and Hamilton had seven rebounds. Evans was 3 of 6 while Culver and Hamilton each made both of their attempts from long range, helping the Red Raiders to a season-high 14 3-pointers while shooting 54 percent from long range. BIG PICTUREFlorida Atlantic: The momentum of a four-game winning streak that included a win over Florida Gulf Coast is gone with consecutive losses as the start of Conference USA approaches. Texas Tech: Balanced scoring figures to be the identity of an experienced roster that included four senior starters along with a key freshman in Zhaire Smith. UP NEXTFlorida Atlantic: Non-conference finale Saturday at Minnesota before C-USA opener at Florida International on Dec. 30. GAME RECAP
Milik Yarbrough totaled 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists and Keyshawn Evans hit 3 of 4 free throws in the final 23 seconds to help Illinois State hold off Illinois-Chicago 71-70 on Tuesday night. Phil Fayne added 16 points and six rebounds for the Redbirds (6-6), who turned 20 Flames turnovers into 15 points. Evans, Illinois State's leading scorer at 19.2 points per game, made just 3 of 14 from the field and just 1 of 8 from 3-point range, but his free throws in the final seconds helped Illinois State win back-to-back games for the second time this season. Marcus Ottey led the Flames (4-7) with 23 points on 10-of-12 shooting. Dikembe Dixson scored 19 and Jordan Blount snared 11 rebounds as UIC controlled the boards 44-35. The game was tied 14 times and there were 14 lead changes. UIC led 29-25 before the Redbirds closed the half on an 8-0 run to lead 33-29. UIC led most of the second half, but Yarbrough's 3-point play put Illinois State up 64-62 with 3:46 remaining and his layup with 1:51 remaining was the Redbirds' last basket and gave them a 68-63 lead.

GAME RECAP
Jaylen Barford scored 18 points on 8-of-9 shooting to lead Arkansas to its fourth straight victory with a 104-69 win over Oral Roberts on Tuesday night. Barford, the fourth-leading scorer in the Southeastern Conference at 18.6 points per game, was coming off his first single-digit scoring effort of the season in a win over Troy. The senior had nine points in the first half against ORU and added a career-best five steals - part of a season-high 27 turnovers forced by Arkansas (9-2). Five players finished in double figures for Arkansas, with C. J. Jones adding 15 points on five 3-pointers. Anton Beard and Daryl Macon scored 14 each, with Macon scoring all of his points in the second half, and Daniel Gafford finished with 12. Emmanuel Nzekwesi led the Golden Eagles (4-10) with 22 points and was 10 of 13 from the field. R. J. Fuqua added 19 points and hit four 3-pointers, while Chris Miller finished with 10 points. BIG PICTUREOral Roberts: After losing nine of 10 games, the Golden Eagles came into Tuesday having won two in a row - over Missouri State and Florida Gulf Coast. They were no match for an Arkansas team that leads the SEC in scoring (88.1 points per game). After Miller made back-to-back baskets to pull Oral Roberts into an 8-8 tie early in the game, the Razorbacks closed the first half on a 44-15 run, led 52-23 at halftime and by as many as 40 early in the second half. Arkansas: The Razorbacks entered the game having forced 19 turnovers in a game three times this season. They nearly topped that in the first half on Tuesday, forcing the Golden Eagles into 16 turnovers in the half and 27 for the game - scoring 42 points off the Oral Roberts' miscues. GAME RECAP
Mike Daum grabbed 14 rebounds and scored 35 points on 14-of-24 shooting, and South Dakota State beat Drake 87-74 on Tuesday night. It's the fifth time Daum has scored 30 points this season and the second time in as many games. The 6-9 forward is the nation's highest-scoring junior. His career high is 51 points and 10 3-pointers. Drake twice closed to within nine points after Nick McGlynn opened the second half with a jumper and layup, but Daum hit a layup and a 3 amid an 8-0 run and the Jackrabbits pulled ahead. David Jenkins Jr.'s two free throws with 6:41 left put SDSU up by 20 and the Bulldogs got no closer than 13 the rest of the way. Reed Tellinghuisen scored 13 points, Jenkins had 12 with four assists, and Lane Severyn added 10 points for the Jackrabbits (10-5), who outrebounded the Bulldogs 42-24 and scored 14 second-chance points off of 12 offensive boards. Tevin King's jumper put the Jackrabbits up for good, 4-2, and SDSU led 43-32 at halftime. De'Ante McMurray scored 13 points, C. J. Rivers had 12 and Reed Timmer 11 for Drake (5-7).

Montell Goodwin scored 23 points, including the game-winning free throws, and Eastern Illinois rallied to beat Western Illinois 78-77 on Tuesday night to end a four-game skid. The Panthers trailed 68-57 after a 9-3 Leathernecks run capped by Dalan Ancrum's jumper with 7:02 left, but took a 74-73 lead with 1:48 to go after Goodwin's layup capped a 10-2 run. Kobe Webster's layup put Western Illinois back on top 75-74 before De'Angelo Jackson's go-ahead jumper. Goodwin hit two free throws with 24 seconds left. Ancrum missed a 3-pointer with seven seconds left, but C. J. Duff got the offensive rebound and made a layup with three seconds to go to make it a one-point game. Goodwin missed a free throw and Duff grabbed the rebound as time expired. Muusa Dama scored 21 points and blocked two shots and Jackson finished with 19 for the Panthers (3-7), who made 19 free throws. Webster scored 16 with seven assists to lead five Leathernecks (7-3) in double-digit scoring.

Paul Jorgensen notched 16 points and four assists, Tyler Wideman scored 15 and Kamar Baldwin added 12 points and eight boards for the Bulldogs (9-3), who shot 50 percent from the floor, had a 42-24 rebound advantage and won for the sixth time in seven games. Djimon Henson hit five 3-pointers and scored 22 to pace the Eagles (4-7), while Lamontray Harris scored 13 on 5-of-7 shooting. Butler led just 33-28 at halftime, but the Bulldogs found the range in the second half - hitting 20 of 32 shots from the floor (62.5 percent) - in upping their record to 7-0 at home. Martin did all the scoring in a 7-0 run early in the second half and Butler gradually pulled away and led by 21 points on Sean McDermott's 3-pointer midway through the half. Butler's lead never fell below 15 from there.

GAME RECAP
Yante Maten scored 24 points, including two baskets in Georgia's 13-3 run to open a dominant second half, and the Bulldogs beat Georgia Tech 80-59 on Tuesday night. Georgia (8-2) has won three straight games in the annual state rivalry game against Georgia Tech (5-5). Freshman Rayshaun Hammonds added 11 points as Georgia's only other scorer in double figures. Maten made 9 of 13 shots from the field and had six rebounds. Josh Okogie led the Yellow Jackets with 21 points before fouling out late in the game. Tadric Jackson had 17 points. Senior center Ben Lammers was held to four points, nine below his average, while making only 2 of 10 shots from the field. There were five first-half ties, the last at 17-17 before a 3-pointer by Juwan Parker started Georgia's 9-0 run. The Yellow Jackets answered with seven straight points, including a 3-pointer by Okogie, to keep the game close. The Bulldogs led only 36-34 at halftime. Georgia opened the second half with three straight baskets and continued to stretch the lead. A jumper by Maten, followed by Hammonds' 3-pointer, gave the Bulldogs their first double-digit lead at 49-37, forcing Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner to call a timeout. The Bulldogs' led 59-45 before Georgia Tech made a mini-rally, cutting the lead to nine points at 61-52. Georgia quickly pushed the lead back to double digits. Turtle Jackson's lay-in stretched Georgia's lead to 21 points at 77-56. Jordan Harris followed with a 3-pointer as the Bulldogs continued to pad the lead. BIG PICTUREGeorgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets took a 16-12 advantage in points in the paint in the first half, and 30-24 for the game, by consistently creating layup opportunities. That success was negated by unforced errors which led to nine first-half turnovers but only 11 for the game. With Lammers struggling, the Yellow Jackets had too little scoring help for Okogie and Tadric Jackson. Georgia: Maten, the senior forward and preseason SEC player of the year, was the Bulldogs' nearly unstoppable go-to scorer. Derek Ogbeide, who had nine points and five rebounds, and Hammonds, a freshman, provided good balance on the front line that made Lammers ineffective. Georgia's ball handling remains a problem with 17 assists and 16 turnovers. WOOF WOOFGeorgia's football team, headed for a Jan. 1 Rose Bowl playoff game against Oklahoma, took the court at halftime. The Bulldogs' new Southeastern Conference championship trophy and Governor's Cup trophy - from their win over Georgia Tech - also were shown off as fans barked and cheered. GAME RECAP
Kendall Smith scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half to help lead Oklahoma State to a 71-59 victory over Tulsa on Tuesday night. Three days after scoring 23 points in a win over then-No. 19 Florida State, Jeffrey Carroll recorded his first double-double of the season, with 14 points and 11 rebounds, for Oklahoma State (9-2). Junior Etou scored 18 points and had six rebounds for Tulsa (7-5), which saw its three-game winning streak snapped. Sterling Taplin added 14 points for the Golden Hurricane. Tulsa led for most of the opening half and by as much as eight early on. The Golden Hurricane went up 25-18 when Etou sank two free throws with 3:47 left, but Oklahoma State responded with a 20-5 run over the next five minutes to seize the advantage early in the second half. Tulsa pushed back with a 13-5 run of their own over a five-minute span to regain the lead at 43-42 when Curran Scott knocked down a 3-pointer from the right corner with 13:13 remaining. BIG PICTURETulsa: The Golden Hurricane played a strong first half, especially defensively, limiting Oklahoma State to just 26.7 percent shooting (8 for 30) over the game's first 13 minutes, and 35.3 percent for the opening half. Tulsa held the lead for most of the first half and certainly looked like they were able to compete with a good OSU squad, but they were unable to sustain it. Tulsa shot 56.3 percent (18 for 32) in the second half. Oklahoma State: The Cowboys experienced some offensive frustration for most of the first half, and then just when it looked like they found their stride early in the second, they allowed Tulsa back into the game. For much of the night, Oklahoma State looked like a team still tired after an emotional 71-70 victory over then-No. 19 Florida State on Saturday at the Orange Bowl Classic in Sunrise, Fla. But they say the mark of a good team is one that can still pull out the victory when not playing their best and the Cowboys did that. UP NEXTTulsa: The Golden Hurricane are off through the holidays, taking on East Carolina on Thurs., Dec. 28 at home. Oklahoma State: The Cowboys remain home, hosting UT-Rio Grande Valley in a Friday matinee contest/

GAME RECAP
Collin Sexton scored 21 points and John Petty added 18 as Alabama rallied past Mercer for an 80-79 victory on Tuesday night in the Rocket City Classic. Petty, a two-time Alabama Mr. Basketball as a Huntsville prep star, hit four of the Crimson Tide's six 3-pointers in his homecoming. Dazon Ingram added 11 and Alex Reese 10 for the Crimson Tide (8-3). Demetre Rivers had 24 points and Ria'n Holland added 21 to lead Mercer (6-6). Holland missed a last-second 3-point attempt after a Tide turnover. Alabama trailed at halftime 35-31, and was down seven at the 10-minute mark of the second half. But it went on a 15-2 run over the next four minutes, highlighted by a Petty 3-pointer with 7:27 to play, that gave the Tide the lead for good. BIG PICTUREAlabama: After going 10-for-24 shooting on 3-pointers in a six-point loss at Arizona, the Tide made just 1 of 16 3-point shots in the first half, and finished 6 of 28 from long range. Mercer: The Bears didn't figure on a potential buzzer-beater after Alabama enjoyed a six-point lead with 11 seconds to go. But some sloppy Tide play gave Mercer an inbounds play with one second remaining, and Holland's 25-foot desperation 3 hit the front rim and caromed away. UP NEXTAlabama's neutral-site game with Mercer was sandwiched between a visit to No. 18 Arizona (a six-point loss on Dec. 9) and a meeting Friday night in Birmingham with Texas (8-3). The Tide, with a schedule ranked 12th toughest in the nation, opens SEC play against No. 8 Texas A&M on Dec. 30. Mercer, the preseason favorite in the Southern Conference, hosts Kennesaw State on Dec. 28.

Thomas Welsh scored 19 points and Aaron Holiday added 15 to lead UCLA to an 85-82 victory over South Dakota on Tuesday night. Welsh, who is averaging a double-double this season, made 7 of 14 shots and pulled down 11 rebounds. Jaylen Hands and Gyorgy Goloman scored 12 points apiece and Chris Smith added 10 for the Bruins. UCLA (8-3) snapped a two-game losing streak and dealt the Coyotes its first loss in five games. The Bruins improved to 6-1 at home and South Dakota dropped to 11-4 and 4-3 on the road. Matt Mooney led the Coyotes with 23 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Brandon Armstrong scored 15 points and Tyler Peterson added 12. Trailing by three at halftime, the Bruins went on a 10-3 run to start the second half and Welsh's basket with 17:22 remaining put UCLA up 46-39. Chris Smith's back-to-back 3-point plays increase UCLA's lead to 69-52 with 7:59 to play and the Bruins led by as many as 20 before the Coyotes battled back to cut it to 84-82 with 1.7 seconds left following Armstrong's 3-pointer. South Dakota got the ball back with 1.5 seconds remaining following a UCLA free throw but Armstrong was unable to get off a 3-point attempt as the game ended. After a lengthy delay the referees reviewed the replay and officially ended the game. The Bruins led 7-2 lead but then went cold. The Coyotes countered with a 17-5 run to take a 19-12 lead following a basket by Mooney at the 8:46 mark. Hands' 3-pointer just before the buzzer cut the Coyotes' lead to 36-33 at the break. South Dakota, the reigning Summit League champions, entered the game with a 48.9 shooting percentage but shot 41.4 percent for the game. BIG PICTURESouth Dakota: Entering Tuesday's game the Coyotes are one of five NCAA Division 1 teams to reach 11 wins thus far this season (Duke, Purdue, Albany and Villanova are the others). UCLA has five players averaging in double figures this season: Holiday (17.6), Welsh (12.6), Kris Wilkes (12.3), Hands (12.0) and Prince Ali (10.4). UP NEXTSouth Dakota opens a 4-game home stand beginning Thursday night against Northland College. GAME RECAP
Kassius Robertson scored 23 points with a steal in the closing seconds, Jordan Barnett had 22 points and Missouri hung on to defeat Stephen F. Austin 82-81 on Tuesday night for its fifth-straight win. It was Robertson who missed two free throw with 13.5 seconds to play before his hustle led to a turnover with 2.7 seconds left. Aaron Augustin hit a 3-pointer with 48 seconds left to pull the Lumberjacks with 81-78 and after Johntay Porter made 1 of 2 from the line with 24 to go, Kevon Harris hit another three at 18 seconds to make it a one-point game. Missouri (10-2) started out efficient, making 10 of its first 11 shots, six of them 3-pointers, including the last four. But SFA stayed close, making 9 of 18, and only trailed 28-21 after Barnett's 3-pointer at the 9:23 mark. The Tigers finished the first half making 8 of 12 3-pointers and 14 of 21 overall - plus 12 of 13 free throws. Still, they only led 48-40. The Lumberjacks scored eight straight points, the last four by Shannon Bogues and turned that into a 18-6 run, closing to 66-65 on a free throws by Ty Holyfield with 5:56 to play. Leon Gilmore III made 1 of 2 free throws to tie the game at 70. Robertson led Missouri with 23 points, 15 of those points from 3-pointers. Jordan Barnett followed with 22 points. Kevon Harris scored 19 points and Holyfield added 18 to lead Stephen F. Austin (10-2), which was coming off an 83-82 win at LSU on Saturday. BIG PICTUREStephen F. Austin: The Lumberjacks stifling defense sets up well for a conference title run, and maybe a tournament appearance. They forced 21 Missouri turnovers with the team that is second in the nation in steals getting 11. Missouri: The Tigers continue to show they can compete without their star freshman, Michael Porter Jr., who is out with a back injury. Tuesday's game was no doubt a test for Missouri, and being able to learn from and overcome the Lumberjacks' stifling defense will help the Tigers later down the road. UP NEXTStephen F. Austin heads back home to face Arlington Baptist in its last non-conference game on Thursday. Missouri travels to St. Louis to face Illinois on Saturday. It'll be the Tigers last non-conference game before beginning SEC play at South Carolina on Jan. 3.

GAME PREVIEW
Time: 9:00 PM EST TEMPE, Ariz. -- After Shannon Evans II drained a 3-pointer early in Arizona State's game-deciding burst in the second half Sunday, he turned and joyously skipped down the sideline toward the defensive end." He's a comedian," teammate Tra Holder said. "He's great player and I'm happy for him." It has been that kind of season for Evans, Holder and the No. 3 Sun Devils, whose 76-64 victory over Vanderbilt pushed them to 10-0 for the first time in school history and moved them up two spots in the AP poll, matching their school-best ranking. Arizona State will attempt to remain one of the four NCAA Division I unbeatens in a home game against the Longwood Lancers (3-8) of the Big South at Wells Fargo Arena on Tuesday. Guards Holder and Evans lead the Sun Devils in scoring, averaging a combined 40 points a game, and 6-foot-8 freshman forward Romello White has given them a strong inside presence they lacked in coach Bobby Hurley's first two years. ASU added another piece Sunday, when Ohio State 6-7 transfer forward Mickey Mitchell had eight points and a career-high 13 rebounds in his first extended playing time since gaining his eligibility at the end of the first semester Dec. 10. At times during his team's decisive 49-18 run that spanned both halves against Vanderbilt, Mitchell was the Sun Devils' only frontcourt player alongside Holder, Evans and guards Kodi Justice and Remy Martin. Mitchell had 10 rebounds in the first half." Very pleased with Mickey tonight," Hurley said afterward. "Thought his rebounding was tremendous. Glad to see him look and appear to be more comfortable. He's a rugged, hard-playing guy. He's so physical." Mickey fits right in with our personality. He's a blue-collar guy. He's unselfish. He passes. He also brings a more physical element to our team. He gives me more lineup flexibility. He's just starting to get adjusted to playing." Mitchell also had two assists and two steals while playing 24 minutes in his second appearance. He saw six minutes in the 95-85 victory at Kansas on Dec. 10. ASU can be at its best with its small lineup, depending on the opponent. Vanderbilt went small most of the game Sunday, too." When everyone is making shots and going by the defender, it is very hard to guard us," Holder said of the four-guard group." It is hard to build a game plan against that. We are a flow offense, and I think that gives us an advantage. Everybody can shoot 3s and dribble, so it is like 'What do we do?' as a defense. We're a gritty team. We play taller that what we are. Coach Hurley gives us that grit." Longwood lost its first five this season, won three in a row, and has lost its last three. It has not beaten an NCAA Division I team since a 79-76 victory over Big South rival Presbyterian on Jan. 4, 2017. The Lancers broke a 21-game losing streak with a victory over Division III North Carolina Wesleyan on Nov. 26. Their other victories this season are against Division II opponents. They lost to Illinois 92-45 on Dec. 13 and fell to Cornell on Saturday. They will stay in the area to face WAC opponent Grand Canyon on Thursday. Junior guard Isaiah Walton (17.2) and senior guard D. K. Ashe (13.6) are the two Lancers scoring in double figures. Ashe had a career-high 31 and Walton had 22 in the 107-78 victory over North Carolina Wesleyan. Walton missed the 69-62 loss to Cornell with an undisclosed injury. The Lancers outrebounded Cornell and limited the Big Red to 39.7 percent shooting from the floor. Longwood shot only 35.3 percent from the field." I thought we were excellent at defending them and defending their sets, but we just didn't score enough points," Longwood coach Jayson Gee told reporters." We miss Isaiah. ... We just didn't shoot the ball well. Didn't shoot free throws well, didn't shoot jump shots well, didn't hit layups. We're just a better offensive team than that."

GAME RECAP
Tra Holder scored 20 points, Kodi Justice added 18 and No. 3 Arizona State overcame a shaky first half to extend the best start in school history with a 95-61 victory over Longwood on Tuesday night. Arizona State (11-0) struggled early for the second straight game, unable to find many seams in Longwood's zone or get shots to fall from the perimeter during the first half. Once the second half rolled around, Arizona State's quick-burst offense ignited. Pressuring the Lancers into mistakes and getting out in transition, the Sun Devils went on a 16-1 run to turn a five-point halftime lead into a 54-35 advantage in the opening 6 1/2 minutes. De'Quon Lake scored 16 points and Holder had a strong all-around game, finishing with six assists, six steals and five rebounds. Longwood (3-9) played without two starters, including leading scorer Isaiah Walton, yet scrapped with the No. 3 team in the country to keep it close in the first half. The Lancers struggled again Arizona State's defensive pressure in the second half and had a hard time keeping track of its bevy of shooters after shutting them down the opening 20 minutes. Kamil Chapman had 16 points to lead the Lancers, who had 16 of their 26 turnovers in the second half. The Sun Devils came out flat against Vanderbilt on Sunday, falling behind 13-0 in their first game as a top-5 team in 36 years. Arizona State kicked into a gear few teams have after that, rolling to a 12-point victory. That victory propelled the Sun Devils past Duke into the No. 3 slot, matching the highest ranking in school history (1981 and 1963). Arizona State got off to another slow start against the Lancers, the No. 344 team in the KenPom rankings, clanging one shot after another against their zone. The Sun Devils missed 13 of their first 17 shots and only improved marginally from there. Arizona State shot 10 of 30 from the field, 4 of 15 from the 3-point arc and clung to a 35-30 halftime lead. Arizona State started to solve Longwood's zone in the second half and caused problems for the Lancers with pressure of their own. A team that can put up points in a hurry , the Sun Devils did just that, going on a 12-0 run to take a 50-34 lead. Justice hit a 3-pointer during the run and made a nifty left-handed, no-look dish to set up Romello White for a basket inside on consecutive possessions. Arizona State continued to pressure the Lancers, stretching the lead to 35 with a 13-0 run that sent many of the fans to the exits. BIG PICTURELongwood lost, but can take a lot away from hanging with the nation's No. 3 team for a half. Arizona State could stand to get off to better starts, but again showed why it's one of the best teams in the country with a dominating second half. UP NEXTLongwood heads across the Valley of the Sun to play Grand Canyon on Thursday. Arizona State hosts Pacific on Friday.---More college basketball: https://collegebasketball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/-Top25

GAME RECAP
After four years, Joe Furstinger nabbed his first double-double, leading New Mexico to a 78-69 victory over Rice on Tuesday night. Coming off the bench, his 17 points and 12 rebounds were both career highs, while Troy Simons and Sam Logwood each added 15 as the Lobos (4-8) ended a four-game skid. Connor Cashaw had 16 points before fouling out for the Owls (3-9) and Bishop Mency added 15 points and 10 rebounds for his first career double-double. Leading 47-42, New Mexico went on a 9-2 run early in the second half, with Chris McNeal hitting a shot clock-beating 3-pointer to spur the Lobos' surge. It was a five-point game with 5:23 to play after Malik Osborne had a 3-point play for the Owls but a 10-3 Lobos surge sealed it. Dane Kuiper had 10 points and five assists for New Mexico and Osborne earned his first career double with 12 points and 11 rebounds for Rice. BIG PICTURERice: After wrapping up its non-conference schedule this week, the Owls open Conference USA play next week with road games at Texas-San Antonio and UTEP. Rice has now lost five of six. New Mexico: After losing eight of nine, the win gives the Lobos a chance to establish a little momentum with a winnable game up next against Prairie View before Mountain West play starts next week. The Lobos opened the season with consecutive wins before running into stronger competition. KEY Two numbers jumped off the page in the first half as the Lobos owned a 10-0 advantage in second-chance points despite just a 5-2 edge in offensive rebounding. And New Mexico had a 29-10 advantage in bench scoring, with Furstinger scoring 10 of his points before the break. UP NEXTRice is home for only the second time in the month on Friday against Texas State. New Mexico continues a five-game home stand with a game Friday against Prairie View.

GAME RECAP
Myles Stephens scored a career-high 30 points and Princeton defeated Southern California 103-93 in overtime on Tuesday night in the second-ever meeting between the schools and first since 1972. The Tigers (5-6) outscored the Trojans 17-7 in overtime after Princeton blew all of an 11-point lead in the second half of its highest scoring game of the season. Devin Cannady added 23 points and Sebastian Much had a career-high 19 points for the Tigers, who won their third in a row. Amir Bell had 18 points - seven in OT - nine assists, seven rebounds and five steals. Chimezie Metu led the Trojans (6-4) with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan McLaughlin added 24 points and Elijah Stewart scored 20. The Tigers made 9 of 10 free throws in overtime, when Stewart fouled out and Jordan Usher picked up his third and fourth fouls for USC. The Trojans committed two costly fouls in the final seconds when Metu got stripped of the ball in the paint and Nick Rakocevic was called for a double-dribble. Princeton trailed by one when the Tigers launched a 20-8 run to take a 62-51 lead. Stephens and Much had eight points each, with Much hitting back-to-back 3-pointers, the first of which beat the shot clock. Much's five 3-pointers were a career high in a homecoming game for the native of Laguna Niguel. The Trojans refused to concede. Stewart and McLaughlin hit consecutive 3-pointers in the final 32 seconds of regulation, the last of which left USC trailing 85-82. McLaughlin's layup cut USC's deficit to 86-84 before Cannady turned the ball over on the baseline under heavy pressure. After a timeout, McLaughlin's layup tied the game at 86. Much missed a potential game-winning 3-pointer with 2 seconds left. Princeton came out firing to start the game, hitting five 3-pointers - three by Cannady - to take its largest lead of the first half, 23-16. The Trojans answered with an 18-2 run sparked by six different players scoring to take a 34-25 lead. BIG PICTUREPrinceton: The Tigers struggled to start the season, losing six of their first eight games. They head to Hawaii later this week on a roll, with three games remaining before the start of Ivy League play on Jan. 5. They were undefeated in league play last season. USC: The Trojans' up-and-down season continues. After opening as the No. 10 team and winning their first four games, they dropped three in a row before winning two and losing again. They have three games left in Hawaii before starting Pac-12 play on Dec. 29. UP NEXTPrinceton: The Tigers travel to Hawaii to play Middle Tennessee State in the Diamond Head Classic on Friday. If the Tigers win, they could potentially play the Trojans on Saturday. GAME PREVIEW
Time: 2:00 PM EST Venue: Air Canada Centre, Toronto, Ont., Canada, M5J 2X2 / TORONTO - While celebrating their 100th anniversary on Tuesday afternoon, the Toronto Maple Leafs would like to put some recent history behind them. The Maple Leafs have lost three in a row entering their game against the Carolina Hurricanes at the Air Canada Centre. They likely will be without star center Auston Matthews for a fifth straight game with what is listed as an upper-body injury. He has been skating, but a possible return date has yet to be determined." He's doing good, I don't know when they're letting him play, but he's doing good," Maple Leafs coach Mike Babcock said. The Hurricanes, meanwhile, have won three in a row." Time to get refreshed, both physically and mentally," Babcock said. "We've been in every game we've played the last three, but haven't found a way to win. We've been ahead, behind, in all scenarios. We have to find a way to get points." The Maple Leafs have added injury problems. Defenseman Nikita Zaitsev is out with a lower-body injury after he blocked a shot during the loss to the Red Wings in Detroit on Friday. He will be out for at least two weeks." You can ask me how he's doing in two weeks and we'll go from there," Babcock said. "The way I look at it, it creates an opportunity for (Connor) Carrick, who has been waiting all year. The ball's in his court and we get to watch him." "Zee is a big part of this club, it's my job to step in," Carrick said. "After a couple of practices at home, we should be gunned up and energetic." Dubbed, the "Next Century Game", the encounter on Tuesday commemorates the club's first game, played Dec. 19, 1917, when they were the Toronto Arenas and faced the Montreal Wanderers." I think it's fun," Hurricanes coach Bill Peters said Monday. "I think it's awesome to be a part of it, 100 years of the NHL. They're wearing the told Toronto Arena jerseys. I think it's going to be a fun afternoon." This will be third and final meeting of the season between the teams. The Hurricanes won 6-3 at the ACC Oct. 26 and the Maple Leafs won 5-4 at Raleigh, N. C. on Nov. 24. Peters said his team will need to play with energy against the Maple Leafs, who have had three days off in the schedule." (The Maple Leafs have) been off for a while and they'll be chomping at the bit," Peters said. The Maple Leafs (20-13-1) are 5-5-0 in their past 10 games, while the Hurricanes (14-11-7) are 4-3-3. In defeating the Columbus Blue Jackets 2-1 on Saturday, the Hurricanes won a game in regulation for the first time since defeating the New York Islanders 4-2 on Nov. 19." It's important to know how to win," defenseman Noah Hanifin said. "If you're going to be in the playoffs and be a tough team to play against, you have to know how to win, especially when you have leads. (Saturday), we had a lead in the whole third period and we found a way to hold it, so we're learning from that." During their three-game string of wins, the Hurricanes have had solid goaltending from Cam Ward and Scott Darling. Ward, 33, has the experience with 301 wins in 635 career games (622 starts), while Darling, 28, has 47 wins in 98 career games (86 starts)." I'm learning every day," Darling said. "I've been learning a lot from Cam, too. He's been showing me the ropes. It's not going to happen overnight, and I'm excited to keep working on it. He talks to me and keeps my confidence up. He's been through it all in his career. He's seen the highs and the lows. If he sees me down, he's quick to give me a pat on the back." Before the win Saturday, Darling was in a 0-3-2 drought. With Zaitsev on injured reserve, the Maple Leafs recalled defenseman Martin Marincin from the Marlies of the AHL. Marincin, 25, has two goals and five assists with the Marlies this season.

GAME PREVIEW
Time: 7:00 PM EST Venue: Canadian Tire Centre, Kanata, ON, Canada, K2V 1AS / OTTAWA -- While avoiding conversations about their owner's public complaints over attendance, the Ottawa Senators are attempting to do what they can to bring fans back to Canadian Tire Centre. And that, of course, is get themselves back into the playoff race. After the fifth-worst November (3-7-1) in franchise history and a December that saw the Senators win just one of their first six games, they are starting to show signs of life. By defeating the visiting Minnesota Wild on Tuesday, the Senators (11-13-7) will have their first three-game winning streak since the second week of the season. What remains to be seen is how many will be on hand to witness the attempt after almost 34,000 paid inflated ticket prices to watch Saturday's 3-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in the NHL's first outdoor game of the season -- and after Senators owner Eugene Melnyk suggested he could relocate the team or dramatically cut the payroll if attendance doesn't improve." That's none of our business," team captain Erik Karlsson said Monday when asked about Melnyk's comments. "That's what he worries about. We worry about playing hockey. That's all we can control. That's what we get paid to do. We show up here every day and do the best we can at what we do." Karlsson, the two-time Norris Trophy winner who has just one goal this season, did about everything anyone could ask in the victory over the Canadiens. Along with an assist on the game winner, he saw a season-high 32:55 of ice time, was a plus-3, had eight blocked shots and seven shots on goal. It was a performance that suggested his future is not his focus even though he is lined up to become one of the league's highest paid players when his contract expires at the end of next season." I'm happy right now, happy where I'm at, worried about making sure we get out of this slump we're in right now and making the postseason this season," Karlsson said. The Wild (17-13-3) will be playing its second of a four-game road trip that started with Saturday's 4-1 loss in Chicago. With No. 1 goalie Devan Dubnyk sidelined indefinitely by a lower body injury, Minnesota is relying on Alex Stalock between the pipes. Stalock stopped a season-high 42 shots in Saturday's setback, and in five game since Dec. 10 has commendable numbers, with a 3-2-0 record that includes one shutout to go along with a 2.10 goals against average and a .935 save percentage." He was awesome again tonight," Wild coach Bruce Boudreau told reports after the Chicago game. "The guy competes his (butt) off. You hopefully can get better results. This week, it's not all doom and gloom. We were 2-2. We didn't lose the week. We've got a chance to win two out of three before Christmas, or three out of three, depending on what goes on. And then we'll be back at it." With just seven goals in its last four games, Minnesota needs to get going offensively. Defenseman Matt Dumba has been carrying much of the load, scoring the lone goal Saturday to give him three in the last two games and five in the last eight." He's probably the only one with offensive confidence right now," Boudreau said. "What he's doing is he's starting to shoot the puck. He's got a great shot. If he shoots the puck a lot he's going to get a lot more of those." Senators coach Guy Boucher confirmed that Craig Anderson will get the chance to win his third straight on Tuesday, while winger Gabriel Dumont will sit with a foot injury. The team has recalled defenseman Ben Harpur from its AHL affiliate.

Karlsson scored his second goal of the game at 1:08 of the second on the power play, beating Stalock with a shot from the point. Pageau gave the Senators a 3-1 at 5:44 following a no-look pass from behind the net by Tom Pyatt. After Stewart got the Wild to within a goal just past the halfway point of the period, Stalock kept it a one-goal game when he stopped Nate Thompson on a short-handed breakaway and then Pyatt on the rebound. Koivu tied it at 19:05 when he tipped a point shot from Suter past Anderson just as a penalty to Senators defenseman Cody Ceci expired. The teams each scored once in the opening period with Karlsson sending a point shot through Stalock who had two players screening him just 2:08 into the game. The Wild got that one back at 11:11 when Suter took a shot that was going wide before hitting Staal in the midsection and redirecting through Anderson's legs. NOTES: Gabriel Dumont and Ben Harpur were scratches for Ottawa while Gustav Olofsson, Zack Mitchell and Devan Dubnyk were scratches for the Wild. ... Senators F Alex Burrows is one assist shy of 200 for his career. ... The Wild had killed 19 straight penalties before Karlsson scored on the Senators' first power-play attempt. GAME PREVIEW
Time: 7:00 PM EST Venue: Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY, 11217 / NEW YORK -- Two teams hoping to parlay some schedule certainty into sustained winning streaks will meet Tuesday night when the New York Islanders host the Detroit Red Wings at Barclays Center. Both squads enter Tuesday having enjoyed multiple days off since winning their most recent game. The Islanders overcame a two-goal first period deficit Saturday night to outlast the visiting Los Angeles Kings 4-3 in overtime. The Red Wings played their final home game before Christmas on Friday, when they beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 3-1. For the Islanders (18-12-3), the win snapped a two-game losing streak and provided an encouraging start to a five-game homestand that bookends the NHL's holiday break. New York, which has won just three of its last nine games (3-5-1), took its first lead against the Kings on Anders Lee's goal with 3:16 remaining in regulation and survived a goal by Los Angeles' Anze Kopitar with 13 seconds left in the third to earn the win on Jordan Eberle's tally 1:54 into overtime." This is a huge win for us," Islanders head coach Doug Weight said afterwards. "The fashion we were able to do it, a little emotion coming back from an early deficit. You can carry this. Momentum goes so far, but this is a good feeling and we've got three home games coming up before Christmas." The Islanders, who host the Anaheim Ducks (Thursday) and Winnipeg Jets (Saturday) before returning from the Christmas break for a date with the Buffalo Sabres (Dec. 27), will enter Tuesday tied with the New York Rangers for the two Eastern Conference wild card spots." I know as of late, it hasn't been the greatest, but we have a bit of a homestand here and we've played really well at home," Eberle said. "So we need to gather as many points as we can and start rolling. We've got, I believe, three more games until Christmas and we need six points." The victory Friday by the Red Wings (12-13-7) snapped a three-game losing streak (0-1-2) and was just their second in the last 10 games (2-4-4). Detroit needed the spark heading out on an east coast road trip in which it will visit the Philadelphia Flyers (Wednesday) and Boston Bruins (Saturday) before Christmas and the New Jersey Devils (Dec. 27) following the holiday." I do think, especially as you get close to the Christmas holiday, it can be a little bit of an advantage to get on the road and just have that bunker mentality and away from some of the commitments you have when you're at home," Red Wings head coach Jeff Blashill told the team's website. A point-filled road trip is a near-necessity for the Red Wings, who fell six points behind the third-place Boston Bruins in the Atlantic Division with the Bruins' 7-2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday night." It was a good win against Toronto and we want to continue the things we're doing well," Red Wings left winger Justin Abdelkader told the team's website. "We want to start to bank away some more points and get back up in the playoff race."

GAME RECAP
/ NEW YORK Trevor Daley scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third period and the Detroit Red Wings beat the New York Islanders 6-3 on Tuesday night for just their third win in 13 games. Martin Frk, Gustav Nyquist, Anthony Mantha, Mike Green and Luke Glendening also scored for the Red Wings, who entered 2-5-5 in their last 12. Henrik Zetterberg and Dylan Larkin each had three assists, and Petr Mrazek made 34 saves. The score was tied 3-all after two periods before Daley scored the tiebreaker into the top left corner with 9:57 left for his second goal of the season. Green scored into the top right corner to give the Red Wings a two-goal lead with 5:48 remaining, and Glendening added an empty-netter with 29 seconds left. Josh Bailey had a goal and an assist, and Anders Lee and Ryan Pulock also scored for the Islanders, who lost for the sixth time in their last eight games (2-5-1). John Tavares had two assists and Thomas Greiss stopped 16 shots. With the Islanders reportedly set to be awarded the right to build a new arena at Belmont Park in a news conference on Wednesday, there were brief chants of ''Bel-mont! Bel-mont!'' after the national anthem in Barclays Center. The Islanders are in their third season at the Brooklyn arena after spending the franchise's first 43 seasons at Long Island's Nassau Coliseum. Trailing 2-1 after one period, New York controlled play in the second, outshooting Detroit 23-4, including an 18-1 advantage through the first 12 minutes. Pulock tied the score on the power play at 2:03 as he received a pass from Jordan Eberle and fired a one-timer from the left circle past Mrazek. New York then took the lead with another power-play goal with 7:01 remaining in the second after some slick puck handling by Mathew Barzal. Bailey sent a pass to Barzal to the left circle, and as the rookie center skated forward he sent the puck back between his skates and then tapped it across in front to Bailey, who put it in for his 10th. Mantha tied it for the Red Wings with 4:45 left in the period. Zetterberg had a chance at an open net on the left side as Greiss was sprawled on the ice while stopping the initial shot. However, Zetterberg's backhander went across the crease, and Mantha knocked it in from behind the goal line off Greiss while the goalie was still sprawled on his stomach facing the goal. New York outshot Detroit 9-6 in the first period but trailed after 20 minutes. Lee got the Islanders on the scoreboard first 6:32 into the game. Tavares sent a pass from the right corner in front to Lee, who turned and beat Mrazek on the blocker side with his 21st. The Red Wings tied it three minutes later as Jonathan Ericsson sent a pass from the left side near the goal line in front to Frk, who deflected it past Greiss for his seventh. Nyquist then gave Detroit the lead with 3:11 left in the opening period as he took a pass from Zetterberg at the bottom of the left circle and beat Greiss between his right shoulder and the post for his ninth. NOTES: Zetterberg has points in four straight games (one goal, five assists). ... The teams play two more times this season - back in Brooklyn on Feb. 9 and at Detroit in the season finale on April 7. ... Tavares, Lee and Bailey have combined for 29 points in the last six games. Bailey has five goals and six assists, Tavares two goals and nine assists, and Lee four goals and three assists. ... Islanders D Thomas Hickey missed his fifth straight game. ... GAME PREVIEW
Time: 7:00 PM EST Venue: Madison Square Garden, New York, N. Y., 10001 / NEW YORK -- Mika Zibanejad is expected to return to the lineup when the New York Rangers host the Anaheim Ducks at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night. When Zibanejad left the lineup with a concussion in late-November, he was the Rangers leading scorer and driving force on team's top power-play unit. The Rangers are 5-3-1 without Zibanejad and have averaged 3.1 goals per game over that time. The power play, however, is just 5-for-27 (18.5 percent) in Zibanejad's absence, which is about four points below the season average prior to Zibanejad's injury. But he was back at practice Monday and expects to be ready to go against the Ducks." It's obviously tough to be out and tough to watch, but always fun, too, to come back," Zibanejad said to Newsday. "I think this is the right time. We took it step by step, and it was another step (Monday) to practice on my line. So far so good." Zibanejad's role on the power play is on the left side, where his right-handed shot is used to one-time pucks from the face-off circle. But the Rangers lacked a suitable replacement, which meant defenses didn't have to worry about one-timers from that side of the ice with the Rangers deploying four left-handed shots and defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk." I think he just makes our power play so much more dangerous instantly," Shattenkirk said to Newsday. "He's a huge weapon on that side, not only the way he shoots the puck, but he makes a lot of poise plays as well that seem to calm everything down when we need it. He does the same thing five-on-five." The Rangers (18-12-3) are coming off back-to-back wins over the weekend while the Ducks (14-12-8) lost 5-3 in New Jersey on Monday night to the Devils, marking the first time the Ducks failed to earn a point since Dec. 1. That statistic doesn't necessarily indicate a hot streak, as the Ducks were 3-0-4 before losing to the Devils. The Ducks squandered a 2-0 first-period lead against the Devils and rank 30th in the league in points percentage when leading after the first period and 29th when leading after two periods. Holding leads has been a problem all season for the Ducks, who will face a rested Rangers team that has the seventh-best record this season when trailing after two periods." I think we stopped skating and then we stopped sharing the puck," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "I thought we had opportunities to move the puck effectively in the second period and we didn't." "They kept coming," said Ducks center Adam Henrique, who scored a highlight-reel goal in his first game against the Devils since last month's trade to Anaheim. "We sat back in the second half of the game. We just have to manage that a little better." For all of their struggles holding leads this season, the Ducks are 3-0-3 in the second half of back-to-backs this season." We have to have more energy and play better than we did the last two periods, that's going to be our goal," Carlyle said. "If we focus on that, play for 60 minutes, we think we're going to be a pretty effective hockey club."

/ NEW YORK Henrik Lundqvist stopped 39 shots, Paul Carey scored twice and the New York Rangers beat the Anaheim Ducks 4-1 on Tuesday night. Kevin Hayes and Michael Grabner also scored for New York, and Nick Holden and David Desharnais each had two assists. The Rangers have won three straight. Ondrej Kase scored for the Ducks, who have lost three straight. John Gibson made 28 saves. The Ducks outshot the Rangers 16-10 in the first period and had several quality scoring opportunities. However, Lundqvist covered up a few defensive breakdowns, giving New York's offense time to get on track. The Rangers scored twice in 1:24 spanning the first intermission. Desharnais found a streaking Carey at 19:14 of the first period, and Hayes scored 38 seconds into the second for a 2-0 lead. Carey scored again at 13:00 of the middle frame. Desharnais stopped short near the hash marks and found Carey alone in the slot. Jimmy Vesey also assisted on the play. Desharnais had been playing well on the top line while center Mika Zibanejad missed nine games with a concussion, but Zibanejad returned Tuesday. Rangers coach Alain Vigneault slid Desharnais to the fourth line, but he still contributed and has nine points in his last 10 games. Grabner scored his 17th of the season at 16:37 of the third for a 4-1 lead. The speedy Austrian forward converted on his own rebound. The play was reviewed, but the referee's determined the puck completely crossed the goal line before an Anaheim defenseman batted the puck out of the air. Kase was able to sneak a wrist shot between Lundqvist's pad at 14:43 of the third period. Ryan Getzlaf and Josh Manson got assists. Anaheim scratched defenseman Brandon Montour, and Francois Beauchemin dressed in his place. Montour has played in 33 of 34 games this season, missing one game due to injury. GAME PREVIEW
Time: 7:30 PM EST Venue: KeyBank Center, Buffalo, N. Y., 14203 / BUFFALO, N. Y. -- Consistency remains a problem for the Buffalo Sabres as they look to turn things around for good. Buffalo will look to put forth a more consistent effort on Tuesday night in a nationally-televised home game against the Boston Bruins. The Sabres (8-18-7) are coming off one of their better offensive efforts of the season on Friday against the Carolina Hurricanes. In that game, former second overall pick Jack Eichel delivered his first career hat trick but the Sabres ultimately came up short in a 5-4 overtime defeat. Those outcomes are the story of the season in recent weeks for Buffalo. After a dreadful stretch in November that saw Buffalo lose 11 of 12 games, the Sabres have been better as of late but have yet to see it pay off in the standings. Buffalo has points in five of its last six games but has also lost four of its last five games (1-1-3)." There was a lot of good things, but at the end of the day, we only get one point," Eichel said after the loss to Carolina. "It stings a little bit." It's not good enough to get a point. It seems like it's been the reoccurring theme here of late. We've had good effort and put ourselves in games and had opportunities to win and we're coming out with overtime losses." Sabres coach Phil Housley continues to stress consistency, structure and urgency in Buffalo's play on the ice." It's just those little details and I continue to talk about it, our play without the puck," Housley said. "It's that urgency that something bad could happen, and (against Carolina) it did." With 28 points (11 goals, 17 assists), Eichel is second on the team in scoring. Evander Kane (14 goals, 17 assists) has been Buffalo's best and most consistent player this year and leads Buffalo in scoring. One bright spot for Buffalo has been the play of goalie Robin Lehner, who has really come on as of late. Lehner has a save percentage of .911 in 25 games played this year. The Sabres could get some help sometime this week as Jacob Josefson looks to return from an ankle injury. Josefson has missed much of the season due to injury but has performed well as a depth player when in the lineup. Boston (16-10-5) is entering a busy period of the schedule; the Bruins are in the middle of a stretch of three games in four days and seven games in 10 days. The Bruins head to Buffalo following a big 7-2 win over Columbus on Monday night at home. Improving on the power play was a focal point after struggling in a Saturday overtime loss to the New York Rangers and the Bruins came up with two power-play goals in the second period against Columbus to open the flood gates on offense." It was good to get the first goal," Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said after his team scored the first three goals. "It's always an advantage, especially at home, to get the other team chasing the game." Charlie McAvoy scored a power-play goal and added an assist. Fellow Bruins rookies Danton Heinen and Jake DeBrusk played key roles with a goal and two assists. Heinen has four goals and nine points in the last seven games. David Pastrnak leads the Bruins in scoring with 31 points (15 goals, 16 assists); Brad Marchand is second in scoring with 29 points (14 goals, 15 assists). Both Tuukka Rask (.912 save percentage) and Anton Khudobin (.915 save percentage) have excelled between the pipes.

/ BUFFALO, N. Y. Jake DeBrusk scored for the second straight night, Anton Khudobin turned away 36 shots and the Boston Bruins blanked the Buffalo Sabres 3-0 on Tuesday. Tim Schaller and David Backes added empty-net goals in the closing minutes of the game. After a 7-2 victory over Columbus on Monday, the Bruins beat the Sabres in a low-scoring affair to win for the seventh time in 10 games. The Sabres threatened to get on the board first in the second period, but Khudobin made a pad save on a shot from Evander Kane to keep the game scoreless. With 9:46 remaining in the period, DeBrusk carried the puck into the Sabres zone and fired a wrist shot over Robin Lehner's shoulder. DeBrusk has goals in consecutive games and four points in his last two. With less than two minutes remaining in the second, the Sabres narrowly missed capitalizing on two scoring chances. First, Kyle Okposo was late passing to Benoit Pouliot on an odd-man rush. Moments later, Pouliot had his shot blocked after Khudobin allowed a big rebound. Khudobin stopped all 10 Sabres shots in the third to earn his first shutout of the season. The Bruins are 8-3-2 when Khudobin starts this season. GAME PREVIEW
Time: 8:00 PM EST Venue: Bridgestone Arena, Nashville, TN, 37203 / It's hard to do any better than the Nashville Predators did on their road trip through Western Canada last week. They swept three games against Vancouver, Edmonton and Calgary by a combined score of 13-1. Juuse Saros and Pekka Rinne pitched consecutive shutouts in Alberta, while the power play kept clicking along and the penalty kill came up big in victories against the Oilers and Flames." We played a lot of good hockey," Nashville's Ryan Johansen said. "We started off right in Vancouver and found ways to win the last couple of games, so a lot of credit to every guy in here. Every guy was contributing throughout this trip, so it was a fun three games for us." Nashville will try to keep the fun going Tuesday night on its return to Bridgestone Arena, where it plays the Winnipeg Jets in a Central Division showdown. The Predators (21-7-4) are 6-0-1 in their last seven games and 16-2-2 since Nov. 3, giving them a tie for first place in the division with St. Louis. Winnipeg (19-10-5) is coming off a split of its home-and-home series over the weekend with St. Louis. After losing 2-0 Saturday night at Scottrade Center as Carter Hutton recorded a franchise record for saves in a shutout with 48, the Jets bounced back Sunday to win 4-0. The only difference between that game and Saturday night was that Winnipeg scored. It drove play in both games, pumping 46 shots at Jake Allen in the rematch and lighting the lamp twice in the second and third periods." We got a lot of offense in those games," Jets coach Paul Maurice said. "That's the real takeaway from it. Those guys expect themselves to score. You need to stay in the game, the style of game you play best and they did that." Winnipeg captain Blake Wheeler said Sunday's result validated the belief that this is a playoff team, mainly because it didn't let frustration color its efforts after Hutton's shutout. All but four Jets skaters put a shot on net Sunday, and two who didn't found the scoresheet, meaning their bus consisted of few passengers." The teams that have success when they're in the playoffs are teams that do that over and over again," Wheeler said of sticking to a game plan. "You just stick with it. We were able to take control of the game in the second period." It helped that Connor Hellebuyck (17-4-4, 2.45 goals-against average, .920 save percentage) was on point when faced with shots, turning away 24 of them for his second shutout of the month and season. He'll have to be as strong to turn away a Nashville attack that has scored at least three goals in 18 of the last 20 games. The Predators have been particularly explosive on home ice, averaging 3.9 goals in 15 home games. Filip Forsberg, who has 15 goals and 17 assists on the season, has scored at least a point in every home game. Rinne (18-4-3, 2.25 GAA, .930 save percentage) is expected to start after stopping 32 shots Saturday night in Calgary for his third shutout of the season.

/ NASHVILLE, Tenn. Brandon Tanev scored the tiebreaking goal with 1:26 left, sending the Winnipeg Jets to a 6-4 victory over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday night. Nikolaj Ehlers had two goals and Adam Lowry, Patrik Laine and Blake Wheeler also scored for the Jets. Tyler Myers added three assists and Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves. Calle Jarnkrok, Kevin Fiala, P. K. Subban and Yannick Weber scored for Nashville, which had won three straight. With time winding down in the third period, Tanev drove down the left side and beat goalie Pekka Rinne with a wrist shot to the short side. Wheeler added an empty-net goal in the final minute. Lowry scored the game's first goal at 8:05 of the opening period. Standing just outside the Nashville crease, he tipped Myers' wrist shot from the center of the blue line. Rinne stopped that attempt, but the rebound fell behind him and Lowry tapped the puck in for his sixth goal of the season. Jarnkrok tied it with 41 seconds remaining in the first. Mattias Ekholm carried the puck behind the Winnipeg goal and then shot the puck off the back of the net. Winnipeg's Kyle Connor tried to move the puck to the right boards, but it deflected off Jarnkrok's stick then Myers' stick and between the pads of a surprised Hellebuyck. Fiala's goal 21 seconds later sent Nashville into the first intermission with a 2-1 lead. In the right corner, Craig Smith forced a turnover by Jets defenseman Jacob Trouba. Smith quickly slid a pass to Fiala in the right circle, where his wrist shot glanced off Hellebuyck's right shoulder and into the net. The teams combined for three goals in a span of 1:31 early in the second. Inside the blue line, Laine slipped by Nashville defenseman Alexei Emelin before driving the slot and beating Rinne with a wrist shot low to the stick side at 6:54. Subban scored on the power play 1:01 later, but Ehlers got his first of the game 30 seconds later when he found a loose puck in the crease and converted. Ehlers struck again with four minutes left in the second from the left circle when the rebound of Myers' shot landed on his stick and he banked the puck in off Rinne for his 17th of the season. Weber tied the game at 4 half a minute into the third with a slap shot from the left faceoff dot that beat Hellebuyck on the short side. NOTES: Rinne finished with 30 saves. ... Weber's goal was his first with the Predators and broke a 56-game drought. ... Subban has a four-game point streak. ... Winnipeg is 16-1-4 when scoring first this season. ... Ehlers has six goals in his last seven games. UP NEXTJets: At the Boston Bruins on Thursday. Predators: Host the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday.---More NHL: www.apnews.com/tag/NHLhockey

GAME PREVIEW
Time: 8:30 PM EST Venue: American Airlines Center, Dallas, TX, 75219 / DALLAS -- After going 2-1-1 in their Eastern Conference road trip, the Dallas Stars get little respite as they return home to oppose the sizzling Washington Capitals on Tuesday at American Airlines Center." Yeah, they're a good team, obviously," Stars goalie Ben Bishop said of the Capitals following practice on Monday. "They've won 10 of 12, so they're feeling it right now. It's just going to be a matter of staying disciplined in our systems and with penalties. That's a very dangerous power play, so you don't want to be giving them any extra opportunities, so that's going to be a big thing." Washington has the NHL's seventh-best power play, converting 20.75 percent of its opportunities, so minimizing the Capitals' chances with the extra attacker is imperative for Dallas to have a chance of prevailing Tuesday. Dallas (18-14-2) concluded its road trip with a 2-1 overtime loss at Philadelphia on Saturday, a game in which both Flyers goals came on the power play. The Stars have been on the penalty kill this season more than all but three other teams, but first-year coach Ken Hitchcock doesn't see his team's rash of penalties as an area of concern." No, it comes and goes. Always happens to younger players," Hitchcock said of the Stars' penalties. "What has happened is it's been the younger players who are learning to play in the National Hockey League, but also quite frankly is what happens when you have a poor stick. There's not many young players that have good sticks. That's a learned skill that takes time. A lot of our younger guys are learning how to do that properly." Dallas, 10-4-0 at home and 10-0-2 in its past 12 games against the Capitals, continues to be without defenseman Marc Methot (knee)." He's not close. He lasted 30 minutes in instructional and 10 minutes with us, so he's not ready. He's not ready to join us on a full-time basis," Hitchcock said. "He might join (the Tuesday) pregame skate, but he hasn't gotten through a practice yet, so I can't give you an exact date. He was to go a little bit longer (Monday); he didn't, he wasn't able to. We'll review it (Tuesday) and start again (Tuesday)." Hitchcock named Bishop as the Tuesday starter in goal but declined to say which goaltender he would give the nod to in the two huge Central Division home games later in the week: Thursday against the Nashville Predators and Saturday against the Chicago Blackhawks." Both guys (Bishop and backup Kari Lehtonen) are playing awful well right now. That's an awful good sign," Hitchcock said. "We got confidence in either guy. These are heavyweight teams that we're playing that are on real long hot streaks right now, so goaltending's going to be a major factor here if we're going to win some of these games." The Capitals (21-12-1), who are 8-6-0 against the Western Conference, are one of the NHL's hottest teams. Washington, which defeated the visiting Anaheim Ducks 3-2 in overtime on Saturday to start a run of four straight against West foes, figures to get a nice boost from the return of forward TJ Oshie to the lineup. He missed the previous four games due to a concussion." I want to get back in there and join in on some of the fun," Oshie said after practice Friday. And if Oshie is fully recovered, Capitals coach Barry Trotz will be more than happy to welcome him back into the rotation." TJ's a real good player for us," Trotz said. "He's a big part of what we do, and if he healthy and ready to go, I have no problem putting him in the lineup." Washington is 7-7-1 on the road. Tuesday's game marks the start of a four-game road trip that will also take the Capitals to Arizona, Vegas and back East to play the New York Rangers before returning home. For whatever reason, Dallas is one place where Washington has had trouble getting wins. The Stars have earned points in their past 12 home games against the Capitals, who haven't won in regulation in Dallas since Oct. 17, 1995, when Washington won 4-3 at the Stars' former home, Reunion Arena.

/ DALLAS Andre Burakovsky scored his second goal of the game 1:51 into overtime, lifting the Washington Capitals over the Dallas Stars 4-3 on Tuesday night. Burakovsky had one goal in his first 14 games this season. He shot over goalie Ben Bishop from the left faceoff circle in OT, and also assisted on Brett Connolly's tying goal with 2:26 left in the third period. The Capitals have won four straight. Braden Holtby made 33 saves for Washington. Bishop stopped 24 shots. Both teams scored one goal in each of the three periods. Andre Burakovsky, Dmitry Orlov and Connolly scored for Washington. Jamie Benn had a power-play goal in the first period, Gemel Smith scored in the second and Alexander Radulov gave the Stars a brief 3-2 lead in the third. Connolly and Radulov each had a goal and an assist. Washington scored first at 10:35 of the first period. Connolly passed across the ice to Burakovsky in the right faceoff circle, and he beat Bishop with a shot into the upper left corner of the net. The Stars tied it eight seconds into their first power play at 15:14. Benn redirected John Klingberg's bouncing shot from the top of the slot past Holtby. Smith gave the Stars their first lead at 11:09 of the second period. In front of the net, he collected the rebound of a shot by Dan Hamhuis from the blue line, moved the puck to his forehand and sent it over Holtby's blocker. Orlov made a move to beat Klingberg and found himself alone in front of Bishop for the goal that tied it at 2 at 13:22 of the second. It was the fourth of only five shots by the Capitals in the period. At 15:53 of the third, Radulov took a pass from Greg Pateryn across the blue line and shot the puck into the lower left of the net from high in the slot. Just 1:41 later, Connolly put a wrist shot past Bishop from in front. NOTES: Dallas had been 2 for 39 on the power play in the previous 14 games and went 1 for 4 on Tuesday. ... Capitals RW T. J. GAME PREVIEW
Time: 9:00 PM EST Venue: Gila River Arena, Phoenix, Ariz., 85305 / GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Arizona Coyotes coach Rick Tocchet keeps searching for a way to turn around a club that lost its first 11 games and hasn't gotten much better since then. Pittsburgh Penguins coach Mike Sullivan's advice to his former assistant coach: Keep looking for those answers, because your hockey team is counting on you to find them." We've talked a lot about staying the course and sticking with your convictions," Sullivan said. However, in a season filled with disappointments for the Coyotes, their 4-2 loss to the Penguins on Saturday night in which Pittsburgh scored twice in the final 15 seconds might have been the most discouraging yet. It was a loss the Florida Panthers can relate to. The Panthers (12-16-5) wind up a five-game road trip in which they have won only once by playing the Coyotes (7-23-5) on Tuesday night. The matchup features two teams that certainly aren't in a holiday mood in December. The Panthers have dropped three straight and seven of nine during this busy month, while Coyotes have lost six in a row and nine of their past 10. The first-year head coaches for both teams are struggling to explain what happened in the third period of their last game. The Panthers were tied 2-2 at Vegas with less than eight minutes remaining Sunday -- after leading 2-0 -- when the Golden Knights scored three consecutive goals, all while outshooting Florida 20-2 in the third period. Panthers coach Bob Boughner almost couldn't believe what he was seeing." Our third period was probably, obviously, the most disappointing period for me in a long time, maybe the season," Boughner said. Similarly, Tocchet loved how his young team surged back to tie the Penguins after trailing 2-0, only to have Pittsburgh defenseman Olli Maatta's slap shot beat goaltender Antti Raanta for the game-winning goal with 14.5 seconds left. Raanta promptly broke his stick over the crossbar in a show of frustration that no doubt every one of his teammates could understand." He played well, and he feels bad," Tocchet said. "It's adversity, and he'll go back in there again and give us a chance again. That's the life of a Coyote right now, we have to build off these experiences." Tocchet must be wondering how many of these experiences his team must go through. The Coyotes have lost 28 of 35 games overall, and since a dominating 5-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Dec. 2, they are 0-5-1." It's been a season like that, and it's going to build character," Tocchet said. "We're going to weed this thing out and we're going to build character on these losses. But they're tough -- I tell you, they're tough." Tocchet, a Penguins assistant when they won the Stanley Cup the past two seasons, talked before the game with his former boss, who could offer only words of encouragement to a man he obviously respects." When you're a leader of a group like a hockey team, the players are taking their cues off you as the head coach, and you've got to make sure that you send the right messages and you have to be consistent with it," Sullivan said. "Toc has strong convictions on how he thinks the game should be played. He's a very good communicator. I think if anybody is up for the challenge that's in front of the Arizona Coyotes, it's him." Tocchet certainly hasn't resisted change. On Saturday, for example, he switched winger Max Domi to center -- a position he hadn't played since junior hockey -- and did it without warning on the day of a game. Domi drew three penalties but scored his first goal since Nov. 20." They're young kids, and (you have to) get them in tough moments and see how they do because that's the only way you're going to build it around here," Tocchet said of a team that has an average age of 25 years and 27 days, making it the NHL's youngest. Tocchet would like to get some home-ice momentum going. The Coyotes are 3-10-1 at Gila River Arena, and they have dropped the first two games of a five-game homestand. Boughner would like to get right winger Radim Vrbata going on a familiar ice surface to him. Vrbata has only four goals in 27 games after having 20 goals and 55 points with Arizona last season. However, Panthers defenseman Mike Matheson said it has been difficult for the whole group to find its way lately." It's tough to keep your confidence up when you're not getting W's," he said. "The last three games, we've been struggling to generate consistent zone time." The Coyotes can relate to that after being outshot 81-50 by Tampa Bay and Pittsburgh in the past two games. Arizona is expected to stay with Raanta (4-8-2) in goal because Tocchet wants him to get plenty of work after Raanta sat out three different stretches with injuries previously this season. James Reimer (6-9-4) is expected to start for Florida." We'll find a way in Arizona," Reimer said following the loss at Vegas.

GAME RECAP
/ GLENDALE, Ariz. Mike Matheson scored early in the third period and the Florida Panthers rallied from two goals down to beat Arizona 3-2 on Tuesday night, handing the slumping Coyotes their seventh straight defeat. Matheson got free while being hooked from behind and sent the puck past goalie Antti Raanta with 14:19 to play, as the Panthers took advantage of Arizona miscues in the defensive zone. Raanta didn't allow a goal for almost 40 minutes, but Florida took control by scoring three times in a six-minute span over the second and third periods. Nick Bjugstad and Denis Malgin also scored for the Panthers, who ended a three-game losing streak. Florida goalie James Reimer stopped 39 shots, and Evgenii Dadonov had two assists. Christian Fischer and Derek Stepan scored for the Coyotes. Raanta made 23 saves. Arizona outshot the Panthers 22-7 in the first period, and three minor penalties - two on Florida - were called in a span of 28 seconds. In a 4-on-4 situation, Fischer deflected Clayton Keller's shot into the net at 15:51 to give the Coyotes a 1-0 lead. It was Fischer's eighth goal of the season and first this month. The 22 shots in a period were a season high for Arizona. Reimer kept the Coyotes from taking a two-goal lead, for the moment, with a glove save on Alex Goligoski's try from right in front early in the second. Later in the period, he stretched his right leg to make a pad save on a breakaway by Keller. But Reimer couldn't stop Stepan's backhand of a loose puck with 1:46 left in the second, giving the Coyotes a 2-0 advantage. The Panthers cut the lead in half when Derek Mackenzie won a faceoff in the Coyotes zone and passed to Bjugstad, whose shot eluded traffic and Raanta 10 seconds before the second-period horn. Malgin was wide open for his goal after a pass from Dadonov. Seconds later, at the 16:06 mark of the third, Raanta thwarted Colton Sceviour's breakaway attempt to keep the game deadlocked. Matheson broke the tie, and the Panthers held on the rest of the way. Former Coyote Keith Yandle served four penalty minutes for two minors. New Coyotes forward Nick Merkley made his NHL debut. NOTES: The Coyotes acquired forward Josh Archibald and G Sean Maguire from Pittsburgh for goalie Michael Leighton. Archibald reported to the Coyotes and was a scratch Tuesday night. Archibald has scored three goals in 14 career games with the Penguins. ... The Coyotes assigned C Dylan Strome to Tucson of the American Hockey League. Strome, the third pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft, has scored one goal in 11 games with the Coyotes this season. ... Arizona will play in Gila River Arena, its current home, next season on a lease extension. ''We are absolutely planning to play next season at Gila River Arena and are focused on building a winning hockey team, positively contributing to our community, and achieving success in all aspects of our business,'' chief operating officer Ahron Cohen said in a statement provided by the team. ... The announced attendance of 10,203 was the lowest of the season at home for Arizona. ... Panthers G Roberto Luongo missed his seventh game with a lower-body injury. GAME PREVIEW
Time: 10:00 PM EST Venue: T-Mobile Arena, Paradise, NV, 89119 / LAS VEGAS -- The Vegas Golden Knights already possess an impressive tally of milestones during their inaugural NHL season, tying or breaking records for best start (3-0-0), win streak (five, twice), most wins in the first 12 home games (10) and fewest games to reach 20 victories (31). Perhaps the most impressive statistic for coach Gerard Gallant's expansion squad is this one: In five games against the four teams that played in last season's conference finals -- Stanley Cup champion Pittsburgh, Nashville, Anaheim and Ottawa -- the Golden Knights are a perfect 5-0-0. Now comes arguably their toughest test of the season when the red-hot Tampa Bay Lightning make their first visit to T-Mobile Arena on Tuesday night. The Atlantic Division-leading Lightning have the best record in the NHL (24-6-2), and they haven't lost a game in December, bringing a seven-game win streak with them to Las Vegas including a 6-5 victory at Colorado on Saturday." Everyone wants to play in the big game," Vegas defenseman Nate Schmidt said. "You want to be able to match yourself up against the best teams and players as well as you can. They've got some of the hottest players and are the hottest team in the league right now, and that's what you want to match yourself up against." Tampa Bay leads the NHL in scoring (3.8 goals per game) and power-play success (27.4 percent) and is third in goals against (2.5). Right winger Nikita Kucherov leads the league in points (46) and is tied with Washington's Alex Ovechkin for most goals (23) while center Steven Stamkos is second in scoring (43) and tied for second in assists (31). Lightning goalie Andrei Vasilevskiy leads the NHL in wins (21) and is third in both save percentage (.934) and goals against (2.11) while defenseman Anton Stralman leads the league in plus/minus (plus-24). The Lightning also own a league-best plus-43 in goal differential, which is 18 better than the second place Los Angeles Kings." They play a fast game," Gallant said. "I talk about our team playing fast. Well, this is probably the fastest and quickest team in the league. ... They score more goals than anybody, and they play a real good hockey game. They're a dangerous club." Tampa Bay spent the past two days in Las Vegas, and coach Jon Cooper gave his squad Sunday off to "check out the sights." Cooper, meanwhile, took in the Golden Knights' 5-2 win over Florida that night." I got to go to the game as a fan (Sunday) night and really enjoyed myself," Cooper said of the atmosphere at T-Mobile Arena. "But it will be a work day (on Tuesday)." Cooper also came away impressed with what he saw on the ice." They roll four lines out at you and six (defensemen)," Cooper told NHL.com. "Their team is really good. It was really impressive to watch." It feels like they're never out of a play. You fall asleep on them and they're going to get you. They're a team that plays for three periods." The game against the Golden Knights (21-9-2) ends a 10-day, four-game road trip for the Lightning that started with a 3-0 victory at St. Louis and also included a 4-1 win over Arizona before the Saturday victory over the Avalanche." We came on this trip wanting to win all four," Tampa Bay defenseman Jake Dotchin said. "We still haven't accomplished our goal. We've got to come in Tuesday ready to go and get ready to play a good team."

/ LAS VEGAS Shea Theodore snapped a tie with 2.3 seconds left and the Vegas Golden Knights scored four power-play goals Tuesday night, ending Tampa Bay's seven-game winning streak with a 4-3 victory over the NHL-best Lightning. It was Vegas' third straight win and seventh in eight games. This one came against the top team in the league - Tampa Bay leads the NHL with 50 points. The expansion Golden Knights are 14-2-1 at home, tying them with Washington and the New York Rangers for the most home wins in the NHL. Erik Haula, James Neal and Jonathan Marchessault also scored for Vegas, while Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 35 shots. The Lightning, who wrapped up a four-game road trip against Western Conference foes, dropped to 12-2-0 against teams from the West. Victor Hedman, Steven Stamkos and Vladislav Namestnikov scored for Tampa Bay, and Andrei Vasilevskiy made 32 saves. The Lightning took some time to set up the first goal, but after they lured Vegas' defenders to one side of Fleury, Stamkos one-timed Victor Hedman's pass to give Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead. Namestnikov made it 2-0 after he took a no-look pass from Nikita Kucherov, backed his way into the crease and reached around Fleury to punch it in. Neal cut Tampa Bay's lead in half midway through the second period when he took a feed from David Perron at the side of the net, spun and fired a wrist shot under the arm of Vasilevskiy to make it 2-1. It was Neal's fifth goal in his last seven games. Marchessault tied it late in the second period with his 50th career goal, a one-timer off a stunning pass from Perron. It was also Marchessault's 100th NHL point. Haula gave Vegas its first lead early in the third when he deflected Theodore's shot from the point past Vasilevskiy. Hedman tied it with less than four minutes left, sneaking one past Fleury from the circle. NOTES: Fleury is two games shy of 700 in his career. ... Stamkos has at least one point in 24 of 33 games this season. UP NEXTLightning: Host the Ottawa Senators on Thursday. Golden Knights: Host the Washington Capitals on Saturday.---More NHL: www.apnews.com/tag/NHLhockey
