GAME PREVIEW
Feb 12, 2019For the last two months, the Brooklyn Nets have drawn notice in a positive light due to their turnaround and emergence into the Eastern Conference playoff race.Even with a solid last two months, recent results show the Nets are slightly staggering towards the All-Star break. They hope to head into the break with a winning record Wednesday night when they visit the Cleveland Cavaliers, who entered Tuesday with the NBA's third-worst record (12-45).Brooklyn (29-29) hasn't been above .500 at the All-Star break since 2012-13, when it was 31-22, which was the only time since 2005-06.After watching Paul George hit a game-winning jumper and the Oklahoma City Thunder rally from a 23-point deficit on Dec. 5, the Nets were 8-18. They are 21-11 since, but since winning six in a row from Jan. 14-25, they've lost six of eight, including four straight road losses. One of Brooklyn's worst performances since its turnaround came in Friday's 125-106 home loss to the Chicago Bulls. The Nets followed it up with a difficult 127-125 loss in Toronto on Monday in a game that was decided by Kawhi Leonard's bank jumper with 4.4 seconds remaining."I just want to keep building on this game," Nets coach Kenny Atkinson said. "Sure we want to go into the break with positive momentum, but I want to play another high-level game. That doesn't always guarantee success in this league as you know, but I really liked our rhythm tonight. We had good chemistry. Everybody played well." The Nets continue to get stellar performances from All-Star D'Angelo Russell, who totaled 28 points and a career-high 14 assists Monday. Russell also had seven rebounds but missed the game-winning 3-point attempt as time expired.Russell has seven double-doubles and is averaging 21.6 points and 7.4 assists since the turnaround began.Joe Harris added 24 and Allen Crabbe contributed 22 in his third game back from missing 26 contests due to a right knee injury, giving the Nets depth as they attempt to snap out of an eight-game stretch where they have shot just 42.6 percent."I think you have to bring in the same mindset," Harris said. "I think we came in extremely locked in today, focused on the personnel, knowing what we need to do to have success. We have to bring that same approach to Cleveland -- regardless of record we are clearly aware that any team is capable of beating anyone. We learned that the other night against Chicago. Just because a team might have 10, 11 wins doesn't mean anything." Cleveland will be trying to win consecutive games for the third time this season. The Cavaliers also won consecutive games Nov. 23-24 and Jan. 27-29.Cleveland has won three of its last seven since losing 18 of 19 from Dec. 19-Jan. 25. The Cavaliers halted a four-game losing streak Monday night by holding on for a 107-104 victory over the New York Knicks.Rookie Collin Sexton scored 20 points against New York, while Larry Nance Jr and Jordan Clarkson added 15 apiece. Kevin Love played 16 minutes in the first half in his second game back from foot surgery and finished with 14 points and nine rebounds."I felt like the last game I wasn't able to open up my lungs like I was tonight," Love said. "It felt pretty good to get out there and feel like I got in some sort of rhythm." Love is expected to play again Wednesday and could see his minutes increase."I think he looks great," Cleveland coach Larry Drew said. "He's doing some things that we've really missed over his absence. He seems to be playing with a pretty good rhythm. More than I had anticipated him coming back this early just in two games." The teams split a pair of meetings earlier this season, with Brooklyn getting a 102-86 win in Cleveland on Oct. 24, and Alec Burks dunking the game-winning basket in Cleveland's 99-97 win in Brooklyn on Dec. 3. Since the last meeting, three players (Burks, Rodney Hood and George Hill) who appeared for Cleveland have been traded.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 13, 2019CLEVELAND D'Angelo Russell scored 14 of his 36 points in the third overtime and the Brooklyn Nets outlasted the Cleveland Cavaliers 148-139 on Wednesday night.DeMarre Carroll's desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer of the second overtime tied the game, and Nets carried the momentum into the third extra session.Russell, who is headed to play in his first All-Star game, had two points in the first half and scored Brooklyn's first 11 points in third overtime, including two 3-pointers.Joe Harris scored 25 points and Carroll had 18 as the Nets improved to 30-29 - above .500 at the All-Star break for the first time since 2012-13.Jordan Clarkson scored a career-high 42 points for Cleveland. Collin Sexton had 24 points and Marquese Chriss added 23.The teams were playing their final game before the break, likely a good thing after going 63 minutes in a contest that saw 23 lead changes.Cleveland seemed to have sealed the win when Clarkson made a go-ahead jumper in the final minute to put Cleveland ahead and added two free throws for a 128-125 lead in the second overtime.Brooklyn called timeout and Carroll was double-teamed in the corner after taking the inbounds pass. He took a couple of dribbles to his left and put up the shot to tie the game. Carroll fell to the floor and was mobbed by his teammates, who poured off the bench.Russell made two free throws with 16 seconds remaining to break a 116-all tie in the first overtime, but Sexton drove the lane and scored to tie the game with 2.8 seconds left.Cavaliers forward Kevin Love sat out to get additional rest following foot surgery. Brooklyn dressed nine players because of several injuries.Chriss, Larry Nance Jr, David Nwaba and Ante Zizic fouled out for Cleveland, which played its first overtime game of the season. The Cavaliers (12-46) were trying to win consecutive games for the third time this season.TIP-INSNets: G Spencer Dinwiddle (torn ligaments in right thumb) F Treveon Graham (personal reasons), F Rodions Kurucs (sprained left elbow), F Jared Dudley (strained left hamstring) and G Dzanan Musa (G-League assignment) are out.Cavaliers: F Cedi Osman and C Ante Zizic returned to the starting lineup. The Cavaliers resume play against Phoenix on Feb. 21.''I don't know minutes-wise what it's going to be like, but a good progression after that because I will be fully prepared to go,'' Love said.''He's in a really good place right now both physically and mentally,'' Cavaliers coach Larry Drew said.UP NEXTNets: Host Portland on Thursday, Feb. 21.Cavaliers: Host Phoenix on Thursday, Feb. 21.---More NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 12, 2019The Indiana Pacers appeared ready to wallow in a long, painful derailment after Victor Oladipo's season-ending knee injury. But they are certainly back on track and chugging along just fine. The Pacers (38-19) will try to match their season best winning streak of seven games when they host the Eastern Conference-leading Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday.Indiana dropped its first four games after Oladipo tore a quad tendon just above his right knee on Jan. 23, but has rebounded in impressive fashion. The Pacers recorded back-to-back road wins in Miami and New Orleans and have added four wins to start a six-game homestand. Among the victories were blowouts of the Los Angeles Lakers (136-94) and Los Angeles Clippers (116-92) as well as a 105-90 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers. The good times continued with Monday's 99-90 triumph over the Charlotte Hornets.Veteran guard Wesley Matthews made his team debut -- having arrived as a free agent after being bought out by the New York Knicks -- with eight points and five rebounds in 30 minutes. He will be counted on to make up some of the lost productivity of Oladipo (18.8 scoring average)."We obviously miss Vic, but Wes is able to step in right away and have an impact because of the things he does," center Myles Turner told reporters after Monday's victory. "He's not a guy who has to shoot the ball 20 or 30 times a game. He's not a guy who demands shots, a guy who's going to complain."He comes in with a businesslike mentality, he takes care of things on the defensive end of the floor and he hits shots. So he fits in right away." Tyreke Evans was moved to a reserve role to open a starting spot for Matthews, who was just 2 of 10 from the field."Part of the agreement was that he would start when he came, and we were OK with that because we thought bringing that type of talent to this roster and having a guy like that going down the stretch and in the playoffs with that type of experience, we were going to need it," Indiana coach Nate McMillan told reporters. The Pacers have won their last four home meetings against the Bucks, who are sizzling with 13 wins in their past 15 games.All-Star forward Giannis Antetokounmpo returned from a one-game absence due to knee soreness to contribute 29 points -- on just 13 field-goal attempts -- 17 rebounds, eight assists and three blocks in Monday's 112-99 road win over the Chicago Bulls.Milwaukee (42-14) finished the game with a 12-2 run to seal a victory, which kept it one game ahead of the Toronto Raptors in the East."I think we just trust one another and were playing with a lot of effort," Antetokounmpo told reporters. "Especially defensively, we tried to pick it up in the second half. We were just finding the open man offensively, and we were able to knock down some shots." The margin prior to the decisive surge was a bit too close for comfort for Eric Bledsoe. But the veteran guard scored 12 of his 19 points in the fourth quarter to help put away the Bulls."They tried to get us with a spoiler alert," Bledsoe told reporters. "We couldn't let it happen, especially going into the (All-Star) break. You know, these games are crucial games even though our record is what it is. These are crucial games we should win." Forward Nikola Mirotic (calf) has yet to make his team debut since being acquired from the Pelicans before the trade deadline. Coach Mike Budenholzer said a decision on Mirotic's availability will be made Wednesday. The clubs split two meetings earlier this season, with the home team winning on each occasion.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 13, 2019INDIANOLIS Giannis Antetokounmpo started fast and finished strong, picking up a triple-double to help the Milwaukee Bucks rally late for a 106-97 victory over the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday night. The three-time All-Star had 33 points, 19 rebounds and 11 assists, leading the Bucks back from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit. NBA-leading Milwaukee has won eight of nine overall and seven straight on the road - its longest road winning streak since 1984-85.Bojan Bogdanovic scored 20 points and Darren Collison added 14 to lead Indiana, which had a six-game winning streak snapped just before the All-Star break. The Pacers had no answers for Antetokounmpo in the opening quarter, when he made five of the Bucks' nine baskets and had assists on the other four. They couldn't stop him late, either - he scored 12 points in a game-closing 30-11 run.Indiana charged back from an eight-point halftime deficit to take the lead in the third quarter and extended the margin to 86-76 on Tyreke Evans' 3-pointer with 9:36 to go.Antetokounmpo answered with a layup to start the comeback and made back-to-back baskets to tie it at 95 with 3:50 to play. GAME PREVIEW
Feb 13, 2019On Monday night, the New York Knicks broke the franchise record for longest single-season losing streak. On Wednesday, the Knicks may move another defeat closer to their all-time record -- while also getting a glimpse at an opponent that proves such struggles can lead to a positive end.The Knicks will look to snap their epic skid Wednesday when they host the Philadelphia 76ers at Madison Square Garden.New York's losing streak hit 17 games Monday night, when a late comeback bid fell short in a 107-104 defeat to the host Cleveland Cavaliers. The 76ers' two-game winning streak ended Tuesday, when they lost to the visiting Boston Celtics 112-109.The Knicks' defeat at Cleveland served as another mile marker in a forgettable season that has seen New York lose 25 of the past 26 as well as 30 of the past 32 games. While New York's 17-game losing streak isn't technically the longest in team history -- the 1984-85 and 1985-86 squads combined to lose 20 straight games spanning the two seasons -- it is the longest in the NBA since the Memphis Grizzlies lost 19 straight last season. The nearly six-week long skid -- the Knicks last won on Jan. 4, the day before the NFL playoffs started -- has also opened up the possibility that New York may threaten the longest losing streaks in NBA history, both of which have a 76ers connection. The 2010-11 Cavaliers and the 2013-14 76ers are tied for the longest single-season losing streak at 26 games. Philadelphia has the overall record, a 28-game drought that spanned the last 10 games of the 2014-15 season and the first 18 games of the 2015-16 campaign. The 76ers' epic losing streaks, of course, came during "The Process," the mammoth rebuild in which the club stockpiled young players while going 47-199 in the three seasons between 2013-14 and 2015-16.If all goes according to plan for the Knicks, they will lose a lot less often than the 76ers before turning things around. New York, which has the worst record in the NBA at 10-46, is positioned for a top-three draft pick and has enough cap space to sign two top-tier free agents.Of course, the Knicks can't quite say they are tanking with the hopes of being much better next year, so it's up to first-year head coach David Fizdale to put a positive spin on the mounting losing streak."A loss is a loss is a loss," Fizdale said. "Right now, all we're focused on is getting better for the next game and trying to win the next game. Again, the beauty of our team, they're not caught up in all that. They're going to keep trying to find a way back into games, back into a way to compete to win and at some point, we'll break and get our win." The 76ers finally began breaking out last year, when they went 52-30 and fell to the Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals.Philadelphia was active at the trade deadline, when it acquired Tobias Harris from the Los Angeles Clippers to go with a nucleus that features Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons and Jimmy Butler."As we have said, there is going to be ups and downs," Harris said after the defeat Tuesday. "It's just, when we do have a game like this that we lose, we make an adjustment from it and we understand how we need to play to be the best team that we can be. So I think there are things from this game that we can take and go back and look at and get better at, and just move forward from there." --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 13, 2019NEW YORK Joel Embiid had 26 points, 14 rebounds and one flying leap over an award-winning actress into the crowd, and the Philadelphia 76ers handed the Knicks their 18th straight loss with a 126-111 victory on Wednesday night.Tobias Harris scored 25 points and Ben Simmons had 18 for the 76ers, who bounced back from their 112-109 home loss to Boston on Tuesday, sending themselves into the All-Star break with a 37-21 record. They had times Wednesday where it appeared they'd win easily, and other moments where the game became much more difficult than necessary against the team with the NBA's worst record.Allonzo Trier scored 19 points and fellow rookie Mitchell Robinson had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Knicks (10-46), who remain mired in the longest losing streak during one season in franchise history. The 76ers made 14 of 18 shots (78 percent) in the first quarter, yet only led 37-33 after the Knicks outworked them on the offensive boards to get up nine more shot attempts. Philadelphia then pushed the lead to 71-55 at halftime.Philadelphia seemed headed for a rout when it scored eight straight points in the third to open an 88-62 advantage after a free throw by Simmons, but the Knicks put up 36 points in the period and were within single digits going to the fourth. It was during the third that Embiid gave the 76ers and plenty of people sitting courtside when he tried to chase down a ball going to the sideline. He went flying just over the head of actress Regina King , who won the Best Supporting Actress award at the Golden Globes, and crashed into the MSG Network statistician working next to broadcaster Mike Breen. The statistician somehow stayed in the game. The Knicks had their moments, highlighted by rookie Kevin Knox's powerful slam over Simmons . But they don't have the firepower to beat a team like the 76ers, or anyone else in the league over the last 2 1/2 months.TIP-INS76ers: Philadelphia has won the last eight meetings. ... Jimmy Butler had 13 points, eight assists and seven rebounds. ... Embiid had his 10th straight double-double.Knicks: Dennis Smith Jr. had 13 points and DeAndre Jordan, who came with him from Dallas in the Kristaps Porzingis trade, scored 12.KANTER'S CHANCECoach David Fizdale said he was happy for Enes Kanter, who announced Wednesday he was signing with the Portland Trail Blazers. The Knicks waived their former starting center last Thursday after they weren't able to find a trade for him.''Seriously, that's a great deal for him,'' Fizdale said. ''He landed with a playoff team.'' PAY UPEmbiid was fined $25,000 for his public criticism of the officiating, which included profanity, following Tuesday's loss. The penalty was announced just before 76ers coach Brett Brown's pregame interview with reporters.''He and I will speak privately,'' Brown said. ''It's probably not something I'd feel comfortable about talking to you all, but it's part of his competitive nature.'' GAME PREVIEW
Feb 12, 2019The Washington Wizards visit the Toronto Raptors Wednesday night for one final chance to salvage a victory in the season series.Toronto won the first three games of the four meetings between the teams, although two of them have been close. The Raptors defeated the Wizards 117-113 in D. C. on Oct. 20, 125-107 in Toronto on Nov. 23 and 140-138 in double overtime on Jan. 13 back in Washington. Both teams played Monday night. The injury-depleted Wizards lost 121-112 to the Pistons in Detroit, while the Raptors eked out a 127-125 home victory over the Brooklyn Nets. The Wizards (24-33) have been without John Wall, who was already out for the season with heel surgery before tearing his left Achilles tendon last week. Against the Pistons, they also were without Tomas Satoransky, for personal reasons, which meant they were without their two best point guards. That left Chasson Randle making his first NBA start against the Pistons, with backup help from Jordan McRae, the top scorer in the G League (30 points per game)."Definitely hurt not having Sato, but he has some family things he has to take care of," said Bradley Beal, who had 32 points, six rebounds and 10 assists in 41 minutes on Monday. "Chase did a good job. Jordan did a great job with his minutes as well. (Having one true point guard) changed a little bit, but not too much. I always say we have enough to get the job done." Randle had five points and one assist in 19 minutes, and McRae had 10 points and four assists in 19 minutes. The Pistons outscored the Wizards 56-40 in points in the paint."We gave away too many points in the paint, especially early on," Beal said.Jeff Green was listed as questionable for the game Monday because of left hip tightness, but he played 28 minutes, scoring four points with five assists. The Raptors, meanwhile, will be without guard Fred VanVleet for at least three weeks with a left thumb injury. The Nets gave the Raptors a tough time Monday, with Kawhi Leonard hitting a bank shot with 4.4 seconds left in the game providing the winning points. He had 30 points for the game."I asked if he called 'bank,'" Raptors coach Nick Nurse said. "He said he called 'game' when he shot it. That covers everything as long as it goes in, right?"Leonard has been in a bit of a slump by his standards recently, but Monday he also matched a career-best eight assists."He was good," Nurse said. "I don't know if he was dominating, but he was better than he has been. He wanted the ball, made some good plays and got into the thing." The Raptors (42-16) have won five in a row to get back within a game of the Milwaukee Bucks for the top spot in the Eastern Conference."I mean, we can be real good," Leonard said. "We have to come out with the same mindset and energy every night. That's the thing that we are working on, trying to be consistent and just knowing the game plan. Once we get that down and start making our shots, it's going to be very hard to beat us." Marc Gasol scored 16 points Monday -- 11 in the fourth quarter -- in his second game with the Raptors, and his home debut. He was obtained in a trade with the Memphis Grizzlies before last week's deadline."I definitely got more comfortable," Gasol said.--Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 13, 2019Following two miserable months, the Detroit Pistons are heading toward the All-Star break on a high note. They will try to collect their fifth straight victory when they play at Boston on Wednesday in their last game before getting eight days off.Not surprisingly, the surge has been led by All-Star power forward Blake Griffin and center Andre Drummond. Griffin is averaging 25.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 6.3 assists during the winning streak while Drummond is averaging 26.3 points, 16.3 rebounds and 3.0 blocks. Both players topped the 30-point mark in Detroit's 121-112 victory over the Washington Wizards on Monday. Drummond powered for 32 points, one shy of his career high, and grabbed 17 rebounds, while Griffin posted 31 points, nine rebounds and nine assists."Blake and I have really done a good job of communicating both on and off the court of things we can do to help each other," Drummond said. "It's a nightmare for teams. You've got to pick your poison, who you want to get going. And it's scary when we both get it going." Griffin believes his frontcourt partner should have joined him on All-Star weekend. The team's losing record made it tough for the league's coaches, who chose the All-Star reserves, to give two Pistons that honor."What happens if you lead the league in your record the second half of the season?" Griffin said to the team's website. "So now somebody got penalized for having a slow start or whatever it may be at the beginning? It doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I think Andre's taken that and really shown that he deserves to be there as well." The Pistons have their eyes on a team prize -- their second playoff berth in a decade. They are one of six teams vying for the final three Eastern Conference playoff positions."Obviously, every (game) from here on out is an important one for us, but we're 5-1 in the last six," Detroit reserve guard Luke Kennard said. "We've got one more before the (All-Star) break, and it's just as important. We can't take our break now. We've got one more to take care of." The Wednesday contest is the finale of a four-game season series. Boston won the first two and Detroit took the latest meeting 113-104 at home on Dec. 15.The Celtics will be playing the second end of a back-to-back set. They bounced back from two home losses last week by going on the road and defeating the Philadelphia 76ers 112-109 on Tuesday.Gordon Hayward scored 26 points off the Boston bench while Al Horford supplied 23 points and Jayson Tatum contributed 20 points and 10 rebounds. All-Star guard Kyrie Irving sat out due to a knee injury and is doubtful to play on Wednesday.Celtics coach Brad Stevens was pleased by his team's performance without its best player."Good teams have clunkers, but good teams respond to those with the right effort and approach," he said. "That was a good one ... I just thought the whole night we played the right way. We fought. And that's what you have to do." The Celtics committed just six turnovers, which is just what Stevens was looking for prior to the game."We have to play harder and better together," he said. "That's it. That's the bottom line." --Field Level Media

Feb 13, 2019BOSTON Jayson Tatum scored 19 points and Gordon Hayward finished with 18 to help the Boston Celtics hold off the Detroit Pistons 118-110 on Wednesday night.Hayward added eight assists and five rebounds in his first start since Dec. 21. Al Horford finished with 17 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists. Jaylen Brown had 17 points and seven rebounds. The Celtics have won seven out of their last nine. The loss ended the Pistons' four-game win streak.Blake Griffin led Detroit with 32 points and eight rebounds. Andre Drummond added 21 points and 17 rebounds. After trailing by 11 in the first half, Boston outscored Detroit 34-20 in the third quarter and led by as many as 28 in the fourth.Celtics All-Star Kyrie Irving sat for the second straight game with a strained right knee, and Terry Rozier was also sidelined with an illness.Coach Brad Stevens adjusted to their absences by starting Smart and Tatum in the backcourt and rounded out his lineup with Hayward, Horford and Marcus Morris.TIP-INSPistons: Were just 5 of 19 from the field (26 percent) and 2 for 9 (22 percent) from 3-point range in third quarter.Celtics: Improved to 9-2 this season without Irving. . Rookie Robert Williams (illness) also sat along with Aron Baynes (left foot contusion). . Smart's 3-pointer early in the third quarter ended his 0-for-20 slump from beyond the arc.RUN TIMEThe Celtics were energized early, jumping out to an 8-0 lead. But Detroit quickly negated it, responding with a 24-5 run to nudge back in front as Boston relied heavily on jump shots and went through a nearly five-minute scoring drought. But the Celtics settled down, ending the opening period on a 15-5 run. Boston controlled the pace in the second quarter and led 57-52 at the half.IRVING UPDATEStevens said Irving's status is officially ''day-to-day,'' but that he could theoretically be cleared to play if the Celtics had a game scheduled for Friday or Saturday. As far as Irving's availability for the All-Star Game, Stevens said he should only suit up if his knee is completely healthy.''I guess my thought would be, if he would have been cleared for us on Friday or Saturday, then he should probably play,'' Stevens said. ''If there's any issues at all and he's not 110 percent, I would not play.'' GAME PREVIEW
Feb 13, 2019The Chicago Bulls will try to avoid a winless homestand when they host the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night.Chicago has lost the first two games of its three-game home set and has dropped 18 of its past 21 overall. The Bulls are on pace to lose 63 games, which would be the third-worst total in franchise history. The outlook is not quite as bleak for Memphis, although the Grizzlies have plunged into second-to-last place in the Western Conference ahead of only the Phoenix Suns. The Grizzlies will be playing on short rest after losing 108-107 to the visiting San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night.Avery Bradley scored a career-high 33 points in the defeat. Jonas Valanciunas had 23 points and 10 rebounds in his first action since the Grizzlies acquired him and two others last week from the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Marc Gasol.Grizzlies coach J. B. Bickerstaff likes what he has seen from Valanciunas so far."We'll have to be patient with our expectations ... but the things that you can tell: intellect, the willingness to compete and an unselfish nature," Bickerstaff said. "(Those are) things we continue to preach to this group." The Wednesday game will be the first meeting of the season between the clubs. The Bulls went 2-0 against the Grizzlies last season, with both wins coming by single digits. This time around, Joakim Noah is a reserve big man for the Grizzlies. Noah started his career in Chicago, where he remains a fan favorite and is likely to receive a loud ovation whenever he enters the game on his old home court. The 33-year-old veteran has played against Bulls only two other times in his career.Otto Porter Jr. will make his fourth start since the Bulls acquired him from the Washington Wizards last week in exchange for Bobby Portis and Jabari Parker. Porter has averaged 17.7 points and 4.3 rebounds per game in his first three contests with Chicago, and he has drained 8 of 14 shots from beyond the 3-point arc (57.1 percent).Teammates are impressed."He doesn't even really know any of the plays," Bulls guard Zach LaVine said in comments published by the Chicago Tribune. "He's been doing great. We put him in pick-and-roll, and he took over part of the game (Monday against the Milwaukee Bucks). He was facilitating, making shots."He's a lot more than just a catch-and-shoot guy. I think his role is going to be a lot bigger than what it was in Washington. He's a lot better than that." Grizzlies point guard Mike Conley did not play Tuesday night against the Spurs because of an illness, and his status was uncertain for the game against the Bulls. Conley is averaging 20.1 points and 6.4 assists in 55 games this season.Bulls point guard Kris Dunn is questionable to play because of a bruised tailbone. The injury led the third-year player to miss practice Tuesday afternoon."He's very sore and stiff," Bulls coach Jim Boylen said.--Field Level Media

Feb 13, 2019CHICAGO Otto Porter Jr. scored a career-high 37 points on 16-for-20 shooting, Robin Lopez added season-high 25 points, and the Chicago Bulls beat the Memphis Grizzlies 122-110 on Wednesday night.Lauri Markkanen added 21 points as Chicago ended a franchise-record 11-game home losing streak with their first win at the United Center since beating Orlando on Dec. 21. The Bulls also won for just the fourth time in 22 games.Avery Bradley scored 15 points for the Grizzlies, who lost for the second straight night.Porter scored at ease, getting the Bulls' first six points in the third quarter and capping it off with a dunk off a pass from Zach LaVine. Porter later set up LaVine for a three-point play to give the Bulls a 80-66 lead with 7:21 left in the quarter.Bradley got Memphis to 109-101 with 4:48 left, but the Bulls answered with a 10-0 run. Markkanen made a 3 to give the Bulls a 118-101 lead with 2:33 left.Mike Conley was back in the Grizzlies' lineup after missing Tuesday's loss to the Spurs with an illness. He finished with 12 points.Porter, who was acquired last Wednesday in a trade with the Wizards, shot 8 for 9 from the field and 3 for 3 from 3-point range for 21 points in the first half. The Bulls led 67-62 at the half. Jaren Jackson Jr. and Jonas Valciunas each had 10 points for the Grizzlies and they each finished with 12 points.TIP-INSGrizzlies: C Joakim Noah, who received a nice ovation when he checked in the first quarter, played against his former team for only the third time. Noah was the 2013-14 Defensive Player of Year with the Bulls. ''My years in Chicago were just so special and I feel I learned so much. In that 10-year span we were really going for it, we were going for a championship, and I thought there was a couple of years where we really had a chance,'' Noah said.Bulls: Former F Bobby Portis indicated in a HoopsHype article the communication with the Bulls leading to his trade to Washington at the deadline wasn't always direct. ''I just don't think it was done the right way,'' Portis was quoted as saying. Coach Jim Boylen didn't agree. ''At this level, a lot of times you get out of something what you put into it. Bobby had a great experience here that he's verbalized. Obviously, he's with a different team now. We did offer Bobby a contract to be here and it's his purgative to choose to not take that deal, part of the league too. Everybody here is being treated with respect. I'm direct and honest with what I want, who we are, who I think we can be,'' said Boylen. ... G Kris Dunn didn't play. GAME PREVIEW
Feb 12, 2019There was little reason to expect Rockets guard James Harden to allow left shoulder soreness to slow his charge toward history. He'd long ago confirmed his wiliness to play through ailments. With just two games remaining prior to the All-Star break, there was a window for Harden to rest his shooting shoulder, injured on Saturday in an early-game collision with behemoth Oklahoma City Thunder center Steven Adams. But on Monday against the Dallas Mavericks, Harden pushed through the discomfort and rode some late-game heroics to his 30th consecutive 30-point game and a 120-104 home victory.Harden scored 11 of his 31 points over the final 2:32 to stave off a Dallas rally and etch his name alongside Hall of Famer Wilt Chamberlain as the only players in league history to score at least 30 points in 30 consecutive games. As for his availability on Wednesday when the Rockets (33-23) visit the Minnesota Timberwolves, there is no ambiguity."He's going to play," Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni said of Harden. "You might as well get used to it, the guy's going to play. Hopefully, we can keep his minutes down a little bit; he had 35 (against the Mavericks) and that's where he should be. If we can keep him there he's fine."We've got to keep the load off of him. It's not the minutes, it's what he has to do in those minutes." The Rockets can advance that goal with continued complementary scoring. While Harden paced Houston in scoring for a 35th consecutive game, four others reached at least 17 points against Dallas, lessening the load on Harden as he struggled to find his shot through the pain.Injuries have stalled the Rockets' egalitarian approach. Of late, they're rounding into form."I think guys are doing a good job of playing hard with the minutes they're in there," Rockets guard Chris Paul said. "For us, it's not about tonight, it's about building for the playoffs, and in order for us to do that, everybody has to continue to be happy for each other and keep playing." The Timberwolves (26-30) found a salve for their injury issues on Monday, juggling their short-handed lineup before clawing out a 130-120 home victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.Minnesota relied on the makeshift combination of point guards Jeff Teague (19 points, 10 assists) and Derrick Rose (22 points, six assists), marking the first time both were available in 10 games. Teague had missed eight consecutive contests with a sore left foot before returning Friday, while Rose, who reached double figures in points for the first time since Jan. 20, had been sidelined in six of seven games with a sore right ankle. They shot a combined 15 of 33 overall. The Timberwolves were without forwards Robert Covington (ankle) and Andrew Wiggins (illness), and guard Tyus Jones (ankle). Veteran Luol Deng started for Wiggins, his first start since the opener last season when he made his lone appearance with the Los Angeles Lakers, and played 38 minutes, collecting 12 points and nine rebounds.Additionally, Minnesota coach Ryan Saunders inserted Dario Saric in the starting lineup ahead of veteran Taj Gibson, and Saric responded with 19 points, eight rebounds and a pair of steals."I've thought about it and I like how Dario spaces the floor, especially with (All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns) ... commanding a ton of attention down there (in the paint)," Saunders said. "And sometimes at this point in the season, you need to shake something up a little bit." The Timberwolves won the first meeting with the Rockets this season, a 103-91 decision at home on Dec. 3.--Field Level Media

Feb 13, 2019MINNEOLIS Jeff Teague scored 27 points, Karl-Anthony Towns had 25 and the Minnesota Timberwolves overcame James Harden's 42 points to beat the Houston Rockets 121-111 on Wednesday night.Harden had his 31st consecutive game with 30 or more points, tying Wilt Chamberlain for the second-longest streak in league history. The NBA's leading scorer passed the 30-point mark on his 15th four-point play of the season, getting Josh Okogie in the air with one of his trademark step-back 3s to put Houston up 74-67 midway through the third.Okogie had 16 points and sparked the Timberwolves to retake the lead with an 18-2 run. The rookie had a breakaway dunk and a 3-pointer to give Minnesota a 77-74 lead, but he brought some of the biggest cheers of the night with an emphatic block on Harden's 3-point attempt with 3:40 to play. After being stripped by Okogie a few plays earlier, Harden stepped back again behind the arc to attempt the 3. This time, the ball didn't even leave his hand before Okogie leaped forward and stuffed it, bringing the crowd to its feet.Derrick Rose completed a three-point play with 1:43 left in the third to give Minnesota an 85-76 lead.Harden's 12-footer made it 89-all in the fourth before the Timberwolves hit four 3-pointers to take a six-point lead. Harden hit three-straight 3-pointers to pull Houston within 115-111 with 1:52 to play. But Okogie dunked and forced Harden into an airball, and Towns hit a layup to give Minnesota just enough breathing room.TIP INSRockets: Coach Mike D'Antoni said C Clint Capela is expected to practice next week to determine if he can play next Thursday at the Lakers. GAME PREVIEW
Feb 12, 2019As the Dallas Mavericks welcome the struggling Miami Heat to town Wednesday night, the final game for both teams before the All-Star break, it's a story of the new guard -- precisely a 6-foot-7 point guard -- replacing the old guard.Even though Dallas (26-30) sports a sub-.500 record, has won all of six road games and is essentially on life-support as far as grabbing a Western Conference playoff spot, perhaps no team sitting outside the playoff bubble enters All-Star weekend with more optimism. That optimism can be summed up in two words: Luka Doncic. The 19-year-old rookie -- who turns 20 on February 28 -- has created optimism that Dallas might soon return to contender status. Dallas believes so highly in its young Slovenian star that it traded away its entire starting lineup to land 7-foot-3 Kristaps Porzingis -- who won't even play this season as he continues to recover from a torn ACL -- and to clear out salary-cap space to make a run at key free agents to build around Doncic. And if All-Star starters were still selected solely by the fans, Doncic -- who leads the rookie class in scoring (20.8 points per game) and ranks second in rebounding (7.1) and assists (5.5) and third steals (1.1), while often delivering in the clutch -- would be in the starting lineup in Sunday night's Game in Charlotte. But when votes from the media and players were factored in, Doncic was bumped from the starting lineup, and the league's coaches didn't select him as a reserve in the star-filled West."I wanted to go 1/8to the All-Star Game 3/8, and I was very disappointed when they told me I wasn't," Doncic said in a recent interview with EuroHoops.net. "What matters is the people who voted for me. I was impressed, and that's what matters most to me. Maybe next year I'll be there." Doncic will, however, command a large presence in Charlotte as the showstopper in Friday night's Rising Stars Challenge and then in Saturday night's Skills Challenge.Against the Heat, Doncic will share the floor with two players who will suit up Sunday as All-Stars one final time as honorary team members -- his Mavs teammate Dirk Nowitzki and Dallas nemesis and Heat star Dwyane Wade. While Nowitzki is receiving emotional sendoffs at every road arena he plays, even though he has not declared his 21st season in Dallas to be his last at age 40, Wade announced that he will retire at season's end.Dallas fans grew to loathe Wade after his free-throw parade led Miami back from a 2-0 deficit to win the 2006 NBA Finals over Nowitzki and the Mavs. In 2011, Nowitzki and Dallas got revenge by taking down Wade and LeBron James in the first of their four Finals appearances together. While Nowitzki has said he and Wade have mutual respect for one another, Dallas fans for Wade might not be so quick to give him a friendly sendoff in his final game there."Of course, like I said after '06, we had some frosty times, but I think that's way behind us. I always say he pushed me to become the player in '11 to ultimately win," Nowitzki told the Dallas Morning News. "There were some things said after the '06 Finals, and both sides in '11."There were some times when we didn't speak much, but like I said, I always watched from afar and he's one of the best two-guards to ever play the game." --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 13, 2019DALLAS Dwyane Wade scored 22 points in what figures to be his final game on the court where he won his first championship, helping the Miami Heat beat the Dallas Mavericks 112-101 Wednesday night. The 37-year-old who has already said this is his final season was a little better despite one of the stronger games of the season for Dirk Nowitzki, his two-time NBA Finals foe whose record 21st season with the same franchise has the feel of an unofficial farewell tour. The 40-year-old German finished two points shy of his season high with 12, although most of the highlights in their first meeting of the season came in the first half before the Heat outscored the Mavericks 32-16 in the third quarter and led by as many as 21 points in the fourth.Nowitzki and Wade, both added to this weekend's All-Star game to recognize their decorated careers, entered the final game before the break together midway through the first quarter, which eased the boos on a Wade farewell tour that has been well-received everywhere else. There were some boos as they took the court, but those were quickly drowned out when many in the crowd stood and cheered. That's been the consistent reaction from fans whenever Nowitzki enters games - home and road. The true reaction of Dallas fans to Wade came later when they booed the 37-year-old whenever he touched the ball. The Mavericks have always thought Wade was the beneficiary of questionable calls in the 2006 NBA Finals, which the Heat clinched with a Game 6 win in Dallas.Fans probably still remember the video of Wade and LeBron James faking coughs while leaving the Mavericks' arena after losing Game 5 of the 2011 Finals when Nowitzki, who was sick before the game, hit the winning shot. Dallas took Game 6 in Miami to win the series. For those who forgot, there were plenty of Twitter posts before the game noting the irony of Wade missing Miami's shootaround because of an illness in what should be his final Dallas appearance.Wade, who went on to win two more titles with James, was healthy enough to play, and had some vintage moments in the first half. He hit a 3 over Nowitzki before the 40-year-old answered him with his familiar one-legged fadeaway over Wade at the other end. Some of the loudest boos for Wade came with him dribbling out the final seconds of the first half isolated on Dallas rookie Jalen Brunson. Wade swished a jumper over the two-time NCAA champion from Villanova to finish the half with a team-high 14 points. The Heat took control without Wade in the third quarter, with Josh Richardson scoring six of the first eight points on a 12-0 run that extended a one-point lead and put Miami ahead by double digits for good.Richardson scored 14 points, and Dion Waiters had 20. Justise Winslow had 11 points and 11 rebounds.Dallas rookie sensation Luka Doncic had 18 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists. The only teenager in NBA history with multiple triple-doubles just missed his fourth. Tim Hardaway Jr. led the Mavericks with 20 points.TIP-INSHeat: Finished with seven players in double figures. The others were James Johnson with 12 points and Kelly Olynyk and Bam Adebayo with 10 apiece. ... Richardson and Winslow had six assists each.Mavericks: C Salah Mejri returned after missing three games and made his second start of the season. The 7-foot-2 Tunisian was re-signed after getting waived as part of the trade that sent Harrison Barnes to Sacramento. Brunson started the second half instead of Mejri, who had two points and one rebound in eight minutes.UP NEXTBoth teams are headed into All-Star break. The Heat return to finish the second of two season-long six-game road trips at Philadelphia on Feb. 21. GAME PREVIEW
Feb 12, 2019The Denver Nuggets have persevered through the first 56 games this season, spending time atop the Western Conference despite numerous injuries to key rotation players.Paul Millsap, Gary Harris, Will Barton and Jamal Murray have all missed chunks of time with injuries, yet the Nuggets (38-18) are in first place in the Northwest Division and off to their best start in their NBA history. Now, Denver is in position to come back stronger after the break and challenge Golden State, 2 1/2 games ahead entering Tuesday, for the top seed in the Western Conference.First the Nuggets have to focus on Sacramento, which comes to town Wednesday night before the league takes off for its midseason festivities. It won't be an easy task. The Kings (30-26) have won five of their last six and are adjusting to new faces on their roster.Sacramento acquired Harrison Barnes from Dallas, Alec Burks from Cleveland and Caleb Swanigan from Portland in three deals just before the trade deadline last week. Barnes has played 30 or more minutes in the Kings' two games since then, but Swanigan has yet to dress. The trades -- which saw Sacramento deal Justin Jackson to Dallas, Iman Shumpert to Houston and Skal Labissiere to Portland -- haven't disrupted the locker room. But Barnes, who is making more than $24 million a year, has yet to put up significant numbers. Head coach Dave Joerger is trying to figure out how to integrate Barnes into the system while trying to lead Sacramento into the playoffs."I'm still learning what to do," Joerger told the Sacramento Bee. "How much I do I want to play Harrison at (small forward)? How much at (power forward)? And what do the matchups look like? And I need to get it done sooner than later because we're not going to find a rhythm if I don't figure it out quickly." It's a tough adjustment to make during the season, and the Nuggets are in a similar position, albeit for different reasons. Denver didn't make any deals at the deadline, but it will add a player into the mix after the All-Star break.Guard Isaiah Thomas, who was signed in the offseason but has spent 10 1/2 months rehabbing from hip surgery, has ramped up his work in practice and could be available against the Kings after being upgraded Tuesday to questionable. ESPN reports the team will determine Thomas' status for the game early Wednesday, while Thomas told reporters Tuesday it'll depend on how he feels after his most extensive practice yet.Harris is expected to come back after the break, giving head coach Michael Malone plenty of options to choose from down the stretch."It's going to be a great problem to have," Malone said after Denver's win over Miami on Monday night. "Our depth is something that we think we can wear teams down with, and we've shown that we're more than willing and capable of playing small at times. So, you can throw a small lineup out there."So, we'll figure it out. But let's let them get healthy first, and then we'll figure out what the best lineup is to win that game." Malone has been able to figure out how to win without a lot of pieces. With the depth improving he will have more at his disposal for the stretch run.--Field Level Media

Hield's last-gasp 3-pointer was off the mark at the buzzer. The Nuggets head into the All-Star break with a 39-18 record and the top spot in the Northwest Division. They're trying to make the postseason for the first time since 2012-13.Thomas proclaimed his surgically repaired hip good to go prior to the game and was anxious to step back onto the court. He received a standing ovation when he entered the game late in the first quarter. The 30-year-old Thomas showed flashes of his talent in shaking off some rust. He played 13 minutes and scored eight points - all in the third quarter - in his first NBA game since March 22 when he was with the Los Angeles Lakers. The Nuggets signed the two-time All-Star to a one-year deal in the offseason and gave him plenty of space to recover from his hip operation.Hield led six Sacramento players in double figures with 25 points. De'Aaron Fox had 15 points and 10 assists.Jokic did a little bit of everything, including a pass off the backboard to himself for a layup and another full-length pass for an easy basket. The team is now 24-4 when Jokic goes for a triple-double, including 16-0 at home.Thomas scored his first basket of the season on a 3-pointer with 2:16 left in the third quarter. GAME PREVIEW
Feb 13, 2019The Golden State Warriors are on a roll, but they want it to continue for one more night. The Warriors stretched their winning streak to five games with a hard-fought 115-108 victory over the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night in Oakland, Calif. All that stands between the Warriors and a six-game tear heading into the All-Star break is a Wednesday night date with the Trail Blazers in Portland."That week off will be nice, but we have to finish the job," said Golden State guard Stephen Curry, who scored 24 points against the Jazz. "We want to finish on a high note. We have to go up to Portland and get a win." Golden State broke open a tight game against Utah with a late 20-4 run, but Curry liked that the Warriors held a 25-14 lead after one quarter."We won the game with our defensive effort in the first quarter," he said. "(The Jazz) came back, but we set the tone early. We've been having some terrible first quarters lately, but we rectified that tonight." Golden State has won 16 of its past 17 games overall and also is riding an 11-game winning streak on the road. The Warriors lead the NBA in scoring (119 points per game), field-goal percentage (.493) and assists (29.5 per game), and they rank third in 3-point percentage (.385).Warriors coach Steve Kerr is trying to incorporate center DeMarcus Cousins -- who returned last month after rehabbing from Achilles tendon surgery -- into the starting lineup. Cousins made only 4 of 17 shots from the field against Utah but contributed 12 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in 28 minutes. He is averaging 13.9 points and 6.8 rebounds in his 11 games.Portland returns home after back-to-back road losses to the Dallas Mavericks and Oklahoma City Thunder. The Blazers, who have dropped three of four overall, are only 10-15 on the road but 23-8 at Moda Center this season. The Golden State game is their only home date in a 10-game stretch that continues through March 5.The Blazers fell 120-111 on Monday at Oklahoma City go to 0-3 this season against the Thunder. Portland is 1-7 against the top three teams in the West, including 1-2 against Golden State and 0-2 against Denver."You want to at least split (a season series) with a division opponent if it comes down to home-court advantage in the playoffs," Portland point guard Damian Lillard said. "That was taken away from us (Monday). So for that reason, you put a little more on it. Tough loss." Blazers coach Terry Stotts continues to tinker with his rotation after the addition to Rodney Hood a week ago. Hood scored nine points on 4-for-5 shooting in 17 minutes off the bench against Oklahoma City."It's going to be a challenge for everybody," Stotts said of more players deserving of minutes. "It's going to be a challenge for me; it's going to be a challenge for the team. We had a rhythm to what we were doing, and that rhythm has been broken."Everybody is just going to have to be patient. One night it's going to be one thing, and maybe the next night it won't. That's just the way it's going to be until it changes." --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 14, 2019PORTLAND, Ore. Damian Lillard scored 29 points and the Portland Trail Blazers snapped Golden State's five-game winning streak with a chippy 129-107 victory Wednesday night that included the late ejection of Warriors coach Steve Kerr.Jake Layman added 17 points off the bench for the Blazers, who had eight players in double figures. The win snapped a two-game skid.Kevin Durant and Stephen Curry each had 32 points for the Warriors, who rested DeMarcus Cousins following a victory at home over Utah the night before. After a tight three quarters, Layman's long jumper gave Portland a 104-101 lead in the final period before Zach Collins blocked Damion Lee's layup on the other end.Collins and Klay Thompson exchanged words, and the frustration spilled over to players from both sides. The two players were given offsetting technical fouls.Portland led 110-103 before Draymond Green was called for a flagrant foul on Collins with 3:54 left. Kerr reacted angrily, throwing his clipboard to court and yelling at the officials before he was ejected.Lillard made the three technical shots and Collins made his free throws to give Portland a 115-103 lead. Layman added a 3-pointer to all but seal the win.In addition to Cousins, the Warriors rested guard Shaun Livingston and forward Andre Iguodala. Kerr said before the game that Cousins and Livingston got the night off because of the back-to-back games, and Iguodala was additionally a ''little banged up.'' The Warriors started Kevon Looney in Cousins' place.Earlier in the day, the Blazers signed center Enes Kanter. The New York Knicks, who decided to focus on younger players, were unable to deal Kanter before the trade deadline and waived him instead.Blazers coach Terry Stotts said Kanter will join the team for the Feb. 21 game against Brooklyn following the All-Star break. Kanter will back up starter Jusuf Nurkic.Durant led all scorers with 16 points in the first quarter, and Golden State led 33-31. Durant played just five minutes of the second quarter as the Warriors turned to their bench and finished the half with 20 points. The first half was close - Portland held a slim 64-61 lead at the break - and it stayed close in the third quarter. Looney's basket tied it at 75 with just under nine minutes to go in the period. The game first got testy midway through the quarter when Durant pushed Nurkic after the two appeared to exchange words, but the officials quickly diffused the situation.Curry made back-to-back 3-pointers and the Warriors took a 93-88 lead, but Lillard answered with a 3.It was the last game before the All-Star break for both teams.TIP-INSWarriors: Kerr said before the game the team would rely on its bench with three key players missing. Among those expected to see extended minutes was Jordan Bell, who went to Oregon. ''He deserves some action. I'm excited to play him. He's got his Oregon shoes on tonight, representing the Ducks.'' Bell had six points and nine rebounds in 16 minutes.Blazers: In addition to Kanter, Portland strengthened its bench prior to the trade deadline with the addition of Rodney Hood. Portland's second unit will now consist of Seth Curry, Layman, Hood, Kanter and Evan Turner.''The addition of Enes fortifies our front court for this critical late season push,'' said Neil Olshey, Blazers president of basketball operations. ''He's an impact player with playoff experience that will be an excellent fit with our style of play.'' GAME PREVIEW
Feb 12, 2019The Los Angeles Clippers will be looking to sweep the season series and extend the Phoenix Suns' misery when the Pacific Division rivals meet Wednesday night in Los Angeles. In the final game of the NBA's first half for both teams, the Clippers (31-27) find themselves in a logjam in the Western Conference playoff race, while the Suns (11-47) are shackled with one of the worst records in the league and riding a 14-game skid. The Clippers have alternated losses and wins in their last seven games as they attempt to adjust to a lineup that's undergone a serious reshaping since the trade deadline. They've gone 3-0 against the Suns this season, but that was before discarding Tobias Harris and Avery Bradley earlier this month.Garrett Temple, acquired from Memphis, and Ivica Zubac, picked up from the Los Angeles Lakers, have been starting in their place.Temple had 11 points and Zubac 12 when the Clippers shocked Boston 123-112 on the road on Saturday, overcoming a 28-point deficit. But they combined for just seven points in Minnesota on Monday, when Los Angeles was beaten 130-120.The Clippers also picked up Wilson Chandler, Landry Shamet and JaMychal Green as part of the three trades they made at the deadline.Shamet has helped strengthen an already potent Clippers bench with 17 and 15 points in his last two games, shooting 7-for-12 on 3-pointers. Green had his first double-figure scoring night for Los Angeles when he went for 11 points at Minnesota. Chandler, acquired from the 76ers, has yet to play for the Clippers because of a strained quad.Clippers president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank tried to put a positive spin on the deals during a town hall-type gathering last week, but admitted there will be nights like the one Monday in Minnesota."We're still gonna do everything we can to make the playoffs," he told Clippers fans, "but we're honest, we're realistic. There could be some short-term pain. But what we're hoping is we're able to then have a long run." Los Angeles also picked up an unprotected first-round pick -- Miami's in 2021 -- in its maneuvering. The Clippers have dominated the Suns not only this season but also to the tune of 11 straight wins dating back to April of 2016. They've won 10 straight at home in the rivalry, with Phoenix's last win in Los Angeles coming in December of 2013.The Suns will take the court Wednesday having lost not only 14 in a row and 10 straight on the road. Their last win came Jan. 12 against Denver, with the last road win Dec. 26 at Orlando.Phoenix also was active at the trade deadline, acquiring Tyler Johnson from Miami for Ryan Anderson. The Suns' debuted what they hope will be their backcourt of the future when Devin Booker returned from a hamstring issue for Sunday's 117-104 loss at Sacramento.Playing alongside Johnson for the first time, Booker had an efficient 27 points on 9-for-19 shooting. Johnson had three assists in the game to go with nine points and five rebounds.Booker admitted in the wake of the loss that he and Johnson need to get to know each other better."I'm going to be at All-Star weekend," Booker told reporters of his participation in the annual 3-point shootout. "But right after that, I've got to touch a basketball and still polish up on things. I hope that everybody has that same mindset." --Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 12, 2019On paper, the heavy lifting awaits top-ranked Tennessee. Over their final eight Southeastern Conference games, the Volunteers play ranked teams three times and face seven teams with winning records. A Saturday night visit to No. 5 Kentucky awaits. But coach Rick Barnes isn't concerned that his team will get caught looking ahead to the weekend showdown with the Wildcats when South Carolina invades Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville on Wednesday night."I think our guys have so much respect for South Carolina, and they understand where they are right now," Barnes said Monday. "They have a great respect for our league, and I thought they went out and competed hard against Florida."I expect them to understand that today's preparation is really important and get ready for Wednesday's game. That's always what we've tried to do, and that's what I expect from them." Tennessee (22-1, 12-0) has won a school-record 18 straight games, dating back to a Thanksgiving weekend overtime loss to Kansas in Brooklyn. The Volunteers made Florida their latest victim Saturday with a 73-61 decision that wasn't really that close.Tennessee used 12-2 and 9-0 bursts in the second half to build a margin as high as 16 points in the final eight minutes. Four players scored in double figures, led by 16 points from All-America candidate Grant Williams. The most encouraging thing about last week's wins -- the Volunteers dumped Missouri 72-60 on Feb. 5 -- was improved defense. After a stretch of victories fueled more by offense than lockdown defense, Tennessee got back to its roots. It limited the Gators to three points for more than nine minutes during a dominant stretch, giving it the impetus to pull away."We talked long and hard about guarding the ball and spent a lot of time working on that," Barnes said. "We've talked about our ball-screen defense and rebounding. We are going to have to continue to emphasize. It goes back to what I always say -- it's about today. Can we get better today in those areas?"South Carolina (12-11, 7-3) clearly has gotten better across the board since SEC play started. After entering conference action with a losing record, the Gamecocks now have a winning mark and hold fourth place by themselves.Their latest success occurred Saturday at the expense of Arkansas. Overcoming a 13-point second half deficit, South Carolina dumped the Razorbacks 77-65 in Columbia behind 31 second-half points from freshmen A. J. Lawson and Keyshawn Bryant. While the duo combined for nine turnovers, they also helped the Gamecocks can 16 of their last 22 shots from the field, as well as 10 of 15 3-pointers."We didn't hold our head down about the turnovers," Bryant said. "It happens." The fourth place team in the SEC in mid-February would ordinarily be a lock for an NCAA at-large bid, but South Carolina's best non-conference win is over Coastal Carolina, ranked 153rd in the new NET rankings. The Volunteers are the only current top 25 opponent on the Gamecocks' remaining schedule. If they can pull off the upset and take advantage of a manageable final seven games, South Carolina might sneak its way into the four-letter tournament.--Field Level Media

Tennessee was 9 of 20 on 3-point attempts.Tennessee's superior accuracy from shorter range made the difference. Tennessee was 25 of 49, while South Carolina was just 12 of 40 on 2-pointers.Jordan Bowden scored 16 points for Tennessee. Kyle Alexander, Jordan Bone and Lamonte' Turner added 10 points each. Grant Williams had eight points, nine rebounds and seven assists with only one turnover.Tre Campbell had 19 points for South Carolina. The 14-0 spurt featured two dunks by Alexander and a 3-pointer from Bowden and Schofield.BIG PICTURESouth Carolina: The Gamecocks haven't figured out a way to slow down Tennessee's high-powered offense. In Wednesday's rematch, Tennessee shot 49.3 percent and dipped below the 50-percent mark only by missing eight of its last nine attempts.Tennessee: The Vols are about to enter the toughest stretch of their schedule. GAME PREVIEW
Feb 12, 2019Coming off its first Big East Conference defeat of the season, No. 13 Villanova still is on an upward trend heading into its second matchup with Providence on Wednesday. The Wildcats (19-5, 10-1) were edged 66-65 at No. 10 Marquette on Saturday in a marquee matchup that did not disappoint. Villanova got 19 points from Phil Booth and 17 more from Eric Paschall. But like everybody else in Big East play this season, Villanova was burned by 38 points from Markus Howard, the conference's leading scorer."You lose a game like that, you look at a lot of the little things you could have done better," Villanova head coach Jay Wright said, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer. "But that's what it is. You've got to learn from it. But I'm proud of our guys. I'm proud of Eric and Phil's leadership and the way the team stuck together. We weren't making shots, and we didn't let it affect our defense." The Wildcats do not figure to see as big of an individual scoring threat on Wednesday. Friars top scorer Alpha Diallo (17 points per game) pours in about eight points per game fewer than Howard.Diallo is also coming off a 10-point performance -- his lowest total since Jan. 5 against Villanova -- in a victory Saturday against St. John's, when he went 3-of-12 from the field. He still found a way to be a factor, though, with a career-high 15 rebounds.Adding to Villanova's sense of urgency for getting back on track is that Wednesday's home game will be followed by three consecutive road games at St. John's (Madison Square Garden), Georgetown and Xavier. The Wildcats have defeated each of their next four opponents already, all coming during an 11-game win streak after they opened the season with an 8-4 record. That 8-4 start included head-scratching losses to Furman and Penn, but defeats to Michigan, Kansas and Marquette are nothing to be ashamed about for the defending national champions.Providence (14-10, 4-7) heads into Wednesday's game knowing that it will have a different look than the first meeting, a 65-59 defeat to the Wildcats at home.Friars freshman A. J. Reeves (11.1 points per game), who did not play in that game because of a foot injury, is set to go this time. Wildcats freshman Cole Swider, who had 10 points in the first matchup, is out with a fractured bone in his right hand.Perhaps the biggest difference Villanova will see this time around is the new vibe coming from Providence head coach Ed Cooley."Today was one of the most joyous coaching games I've had in my 13 years as a head coach," Cooley said after the St. John's victory, according to the Providence Journal. "I woke up this morning and it's been an up-and-down year for us. It's been frustration and it's been anger but I told the guys, 'Hey, let's have some fun. Nobody expects us to do much, so let's have some fun.'"Diallo will still be the key, as the Big East's leading rebounder (8.3 per game) comes off his seventh double-double of the season and the 13th of his career. He also leads Providence with 3.2 assists per game. He has 10 games with at least 20 points this season. There have been 14 meetings between the teams since the new Big East Conference was formed, with Villanova holding a 12-2 advantage.--Field Level Media

Feb 13, 2019VILLANOVA, Pa. Eric Paschall scored 20 of his 25 points in the second half and No. 13 Villanova rebounded from its first Big East loss by running away from Providence 85-67 on Wednesday night.Fellow senior Phil Booth added 22 for the Wildcats (20-5, 11-1), who were fresh off a one-point loss to No. 10 Marquette after getting off to a program best 10-0 start in league play.Nate Watson led Providence (14-11, 4-8) with 18 points. The Friars have lost four of their last five but were coming off an impressive 14-point road win at St. John's on Saturday. After two straight 3-pointers from Paschall put Villanova ahead 53-45 early in the second half, Providence scored the next 10 points, culminating with a steal and acrobatic reverse layup from Maliek White, to take a 55-53 lead with 10:29 remaining. But Paschall delivered two more big threes - right in front of the 'Nova bench - to help the Wildcats close the game on a 23-6 run. Underclassmen Saddiq Bey and Dhamir Cosby-Roundtree helped seal the win with a 3-pointer and three-point play during the decisive spurt.Pashcall shot 10 for 13 from the field and 5 for 6 from 3-point range. Cosby-Roundtree finished with 12 points and didn't miss a shot from the field (4 for 4) or the foul line (4 for 4).Providence junior Alpha Diallo, the eighth leading scorer and top rebounder in the Big East, was held scoreless until an emphatic dunk and three-point play with 1:38 left in the first half followed by a 3-pointer with 2.5 seconds left. But fueled by perfect 14-for-14 free throw shooting in the first half, the Wildcats led 39-34 at halftime.Diallo finished with 11 points and seven rebounds while committing five turnovers.BIG PICTUREProvidence: The Friars, who have made the NCAA Tournament and won at least 20 games in each of the last five seasons, continue to struggle to gain traction in the crowded conference. They rank last in the league in scoring offense.Villanova: The Wildcats have a one-game lead on Marquette for first place in the Big East while no other team in the league even has a winning record. Villanova won the first four regular-season championships of the revamped Big East before Xavier took the title last season.UP NEXTProvidence begins a three-game home stretch vs. Xavier on Saturday afternoon.Villanova plays the first of three straight games on the road at St. John's on Sunday evening.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 12, 2019Florida State moved up five spots to No. 17 in the Associated Press' Top 25 poll this week after its gutsy, 80-75 overtime win Saturday against No. 16 Louisville. The comeback victory against the Cardinals also marked the Seminoles' fifth win in a row, inserting Florida State (18-5, 6-4 ACC) squarely back into the ACC race for one of the top four seeds with the conference schedule beginning to wind down."It's been an amazing feeling knowing where we've come from," senior guard Terance Mann told the Tallahassee Democrat on Saturday after the win against Louisville. "Being 1-4 and that feeling of being at the bottom of the league when you know you're not supposed to be there -- mustering up some confidence and being able to punch people in the face and get back is definitely a great feeling." Next up? A struggling Wake Forest team, which has lost five of its last six games and eight of 10 coming into Wednesday's contest in Tallahassee, where the Seminoles have only lost once this season -- a last-second heartbreaker to No. 1 Duke in early January.Florida State is in the midst of its longest ACC win streak in seven years. They won seven conference games in a row back in the 2011-12 season, the same year the Seminoles won their only ACC Championship. The Demon Deacons (9-13, 2-8), meanwhile, are second-to-last in the ACC, but they are coming off their first win in a nearly a month. Last Tuesday, guard Chaundee Brown drilled a 3-pointer with 31 seconds left in overtime to beat Pittsburgh 78-76, snapping a five-game skid.Wake Forest coach Danny Manning said the long break in between games has been good for his team, and he hopes the Demon Deacons can start fast Wednesday against Florida State -- something they didn't do in lopsided losses to Clemson (63-37), Louisville (82-54) and No. 3 Virginia (68-45) over the last few weeks."A lot of that is making shots. We've had opportunities to score the ball, we just haven't been able to score the ball early," Manning told 247sports.com "Even the Pitt game, in the first half we missed five to six layups, or what I consider layups. You make those and it's a little bit different spin. For us, we have to get better with the starts, but we also have to reward ourselves with our opportunities as well." Wake Forest is led by guard Brandon Childress at 15.3 points per game, followed by forward Jaylen Hoard (14 points, 8.4 rebounds) and Brown (10.9 points). Florida State is paced by forward Mfiondu Kabengele with 13.6 points per game, followed by Mann at 12.3. Mann also leads the team with 6.6 rebounds per game.Wednesday will mark the first of two late-season meetings between the Seminoles and the Demon Deacons. The rematch will come in both teams' regular-season finales March 9 in Winston Salem, N. C.Wake Forest also marks one of Florida State's final four home ACC games left on the schedule. After Wednesday, the Seminoles start an eight-day, three-game road trip: Saturday at Georgia Tech, Feb. 19 at Clemson and then a showdown with No. 8 North Carolina on Feb. 23.The Demon Deacons, meanwhile, get the Tar Heels on Saturday at home.Wake Forest leads the all-time series with Florida State 26-25.--Field Level Media

Rutgers was 1 for 10 behind the 3-point arc, while Northwestern went 1 for 8. Overall, both teams shot below 35 percent in the first half, resulting in a tie at 22 at halftime. The Scarlet Knights picked up their pace offensively early in the second half. GAME RECAP
Feb 13, 2019RALEIGH, N. C. Braxton Beverly matched a career high with 21 points and North Carolina State beat Syracuse 73-58 on Wednesday night.Torin Dorn had 16 points and 12 rebounds, and DJ Funderburk added 12 points to help the Wolfpack (18-7, 6-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) win their second straight.Frank Howard led the cold-shooting Orange (17-8, 8-4) with a season-best 21 points and Marek Dolezaj added 10. Syracuse shot just 35 percent overall while N. C. State was at 64 percent in the second half, pushing its lead into double figures to stay with a 14-0 run midway through the half keyed by Beverly. In his last home game - a 47-24 loss to Virginia Tech on Feb. 2 that set all sorts of futility marks - Beverly was 0 for 12 and missed nine 3s. He then hit 9 of 14 attempts from lone range in the two games preceding this one. Then, squaring up against the Orange's trademark 2-3 zone defense, Beverly hit four of the Wolfpack's five 3-pointers while matching the high he set last month in a home loss to North Carolina.BIG PICTURESyracuse: The Orange just couldn't hit anything, no matter where they shot it from. Syracuse was 5 of 25 from 3-point range and made just 11 of 22 free throws - only once all season has Syracuse been worse from the line, when they shot 39 percent in a loss to Buffalo. The Orange fell to 0-6 against power-conference opponents when its overall shooting percentage was in the 30s.N. C. State: The Wolfpack had an uncharacteristically lonely bench, because one of the ACC's deepest groups of subs was down a couple of men after Eric Lockett (personal reasons) and Blake Harris (illness) were unavailable. N. C. State's bench combines to average 31.3 points and the three reserves coach Kevin Keatts used in this one came through with 21 points.UP NEXTSyracuse: Returns home to take on No. 16 Louisville on Feb. 20.N. C. State: Makes the short trip across the Triangle to face No. 2 Duke on Saturday night.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 12, 2019A pair of teams searching for offense will meet on Wednesday when Georgia Tech travels to No. 22 Virginia Tech for a return match in their ACC series. Both clubs are having trouble scoring points, but for totally different reasons.Virginia Tech's offense was dealt a blow when All-ACC guard Justin Robinson injured his foot on Jan. 30 at Miami. Robinson, who is averaging 14.4 points and 5.4 assists, was on crutches Saturday when the Hokies lost at Clemson. The senior is out indefinitely, though it's unclear if he required surgery.Georgia Tech has a clean bill of health. The Yellow Jackets just don't have a go-to offensive player this year since Josh Okogie left after his sophomore year for the NBA. Georgia Tech has failed to reach 60 points in its five-game losing streak and twice failed to reach 50.Virginia Tech (18-5, 7-4 ACC) has lost two in a row, falling to No. 16 Louisville and at Clemson. But the Hokies have lost only once at home all season. Georgia Tech (11-13, 3-8 ACC) is 2-6 on the road.Virginia Tech won the first meeting between the two teams, 52-49 in Atlanta on Jan. 9.The Hokies are 1-2 since Robinson was injured, but guard Nickeil Alexander-Walker said his team must quit whining and regain its focus."We're going to find a way," Alexander-Walker said. "J-Rob is a great player, but I'm not going to sit here and just be like, 'Damn, we don't have J-Rob' every play. We've lost players before. From the beginning of the season, we've been losing players, so I'm not going to sit in the corner and cry about it. I'm just going to be a man and try to win games and compete with what we have on the floor." Alexander-Walker, a sophomore guard, leads the team with 17.3 points and adds 4.3 rebounds per game. Other top scorers on the team are forward Kerry Blackshear Jr. (13.3 points, team-high 6.7 rebounds) and guard Ahmed Hill (13 points). Hill scored 15 and Blackshear 14 to lead the Hokies in the first meeting with Georgia Tech.Georgia Tech guard Jose Alvardo led the Yellow Jackets in scoring with 20 points in the first meeting, but the sophomore is mired in a deep slump. He's 3-for-30 from the field over the last three games and 8-for-49 over the last five, and his team-leading average is down to 11.7 points. The Yellow Jackets have lately abandoned the 3-point shot, although freshman guard Michael Devoe dropped four treys on Sunday against Notre Dame en route to a season-high 18. Georgia Tech has instead been pounding the ball inside to 6-foot-8 junior James Banks III (10.4 points, 7.5 rebounds) and 6-9 senior Abdoulaye Gueye (7.4 points, 4.1 rebounds)."We play great defense, we just can't score the ball right now," Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner said. "There's just a lid on the rim. Been as draining as can be. Until that lid removes itself, it's going to be a struggle. We just have to find a way to score some points." The scoring woes have overshadowed Georgia Tech's excellent defensive effort. The Yellow Jacket are tied for No. 12 in the nation in field-goal defense (38.9 percent), No. 7 in the nation in 3-point defense (27.7) and No. 25 in scoring defense (64.0).Virginia Tech's defense is equally exceptional. The Hokies are tied for No. 26 in field-goal defense (40.2) and No. 7 in scoring defense (60.8).--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 13, 2019BLACKSBURG, Va. Ty Outlaw scored 20 points and No. 22 Virginia Tech defeated Georgia Tech 76-68 on Wednesday night.Outlaw hit six 3-pointers for the Hokies (19-5, 8-4 ACC), who rallied from a three-point halftime deficit and snapped a two-game losing streak.Kerry Blackshear Jr. and Nickeil Alexander-Walker each scored 16 points for the Hokies, who swept the season series and notched their sixth straight win over Georgia Tech (11-14, 3-9).Michael Devoe paced the Yellow Jackets with 22 points. After hitting just five 3-pointers in winning an ugly game in Atlanta on Jan. 9, Virginia Tech hit 13 in the victory. The Hokies shot just 34.6 percent in the first half (9 of 26), but heated up behind Outlaw and Blackshear in the second half, shooting 59.3 percent (16 of 27).The Hokies trailed 35-30 early in the second half, but a 3-pointer by Outlaw with 18:04 remaining started a 17-2 run in which Virginia Tech scored on six of seven possessions to take the lead for good. Georgia Tech missed three shots and turned the ball over twice in that span. The Yellow Jackets cut the lead to 49-48 on a 3-pointer by Devoe with 8:56 left, but the Hokies answered, with Blackshear converting a three-point play on the ensuing possession. Blackshear later added a free throw and Outlaw connected on a 3-pointer in a 7-0 run, and the Hokies never looked back.TIP-INSVirginia Tech: The Hokies had been struggling without star point guard Justin Robinson, who missed his fourth straight game with a foot injury. In three previous games without him, they had averaged 54 points and shot 35.6 percent from the floor (32.8 percent from beyond the 3-point arc), but they got well against the Yellow Jackets, who came into the game ranked third in the ACC in field-goal percentage defense (38.9 percent).Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets had failed to score 50 points in two of their previous three games, so 68 points and 11 3-pointers certainly were a step in the right direction. But their zone defense let them down in this one, as Virginia Tech's 13 3-pointers were the most against the Yellow Jackets this season.POLL IMPLICATIONSVirginia Tech: After sliding in the polls following Saturday's loss at Clemson, the Hokies have a chance to move back up with a win at Pittsburgh on Saturday. The Panthers were in last place with a 2-10 conference record heading into Wednesday night play.Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets aren't going to be in the national poll any time soon, but can play the role of spoiler, with games against ranked foes Florida State and Virginia remaining on the schedule.UP NEXTVirginia Tech: The Hokies play at Pittsburgh on Saturday.Georgia Tech: The Yellow Jackets play host to No. 17 Florida State on Saturday.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25
