GAME PREVIEW
Mar 19, 2018 DeMar DeRozan and the Toronto Raptors are seething. Not only is its 11-game winning streak gone, Toronto's frustration with how it ended was evident for anyone to see.The Raptors hope to regain their composure and get their team-record ninth straight road win Tuesday night when they visit the Orlando Magic.Toronto (52-18) saw its second 11-game winning streak in team history ended with a 132-125 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday afternoon. The Raptors lost for the first time since a four-point overtime loss to the Milwaukee Bucks on Feb. 24 and the final 11 seconds saw the ejections of DeRozan, coach Dwane Casey and Serge Ibaka.DeRozan was miffed there was no foul called on Corey Brewer on a drive to the rim that missed with 30 seconds left. Ibaka was annoyed that he was called for a foul with 69 seconds left after getting thrown to the floor by Steven Adams while the big men jostled for position and Casey was thrown out for expressing dismay at the officiating crew of Mark Davis, Haywoode Workman and Brent Barnaky. After a game featuring 49 fouls and 57 trips to the line, DeRozan was not shy in voicing his displeasure."No, we're used to going against the odds every step of the way," DeRozan told reporters. "It's been like that. We fight through it, but as soon as we say something, we're the bad guys, we get fined, we get criticized. Every single night when we play we fight against all the odds. We still prevail, but we've all got a breaking point and it's frustrating. As for Casey, he said the Raptors intend on filing a formal complaint."Officials are going to miss calls but, at the juncture of the game when some of the calls were made, we've got to get it right around the league," Casey said. "Not just this game, the entire league." The Raptors now hope to avoid any controversies with officiating while also avoiding consecutive losses for the first time since a 127-125 defeat to Golden State on Jan. 13 and a 117-111 loss at Philadelphia two days later.Since those defeats, Toronto is 23-5 in its last 28 games and on Tuesday, the Raptors will be coming off allowing a season-high in points and their third-highest shooting percentage (55.7 percent) of the season."It was a four-point game, we got frustrated, we can't allow that to do that to us," Casey told reporters. The Raptors will hope to avoid any frustrating moments against a team they own 16 wins in the last 19 meeting against. Toronto's second win of its streak was a 117-104 win at Orlando on Feb. 28 when they pulled away in the final minutes.Orlando (21-49) is 3-6 since the last meeting with Toronto. After falling to Toronto, the Magic won home games over Detroit and Memphis before dropping six of the next seven. In four of those losses, Orlando has been held under 90 points and is coming off a 92-83 home defeat to the Boston Celtics on Friday. Orlando shot 39.1 percent and set a season low by shooting 17.9 percent (5 of 28) from 3-point range.Shelvin Mack led the Magic with 16 points but others struggled, including Nikola Vucevic. Vucevic scored 12 points but missed six of his first seven shots and was 6 of 14."We didn't get anything going tonight, one through 15, especially me in the first half," Vucevic told reporters after producing his lowest point total since returning from a fractured left hand on Feb. 22. "A lot of solid looks that I usually knock down, I just missed them.Vucevic scored 14 points in the last meeting with Toronto when Aaron Gordon and Evan Fournier played. Fournier (sprained knee) is expected to miss their sixth straight game and Gordon is expected to return from possibly his second concussion of the season.Gordon collided with Los Angeles Lakers forward Julius Randle in the third quarter on March 7. The Magic announced Monday Gordon cleared the league's concussion protocol."He's symptom-free," Magic coach Frank Vogel told reporters Friday. "He's frustrated, and he wants to play, and we're frustrated, and we want him to play."

GAME RECAP
Mar 20, 2018 ORLANDO, Fla. Kyle Lowry scored 25 points and Toronto used a strong fourth-quarter defensive effort to beat the Orlando Magic 93-86 on Tuesday night.Toronto limited Orlando to 3-of-19 shooting (15.8 percent) in the fourth quarter, helping the Raptors overcome an eight-point deficit and win for the 12th time in their last 13 games. Serge Ibaka had 14 points and Deion Wright and Norman Powell had 10 apiece for Toronto.Shelvin Mack led Orlando with 17 points. Aaron Gordon, returning after missing five games with a concussion, added 16 points. Nikola Vucevic had 15 points and nine rebounds for Orlando, which has lost seven of its last eight. The Raptors bench did most of the work in the final period. The reserves pressured Orlando all over the floor, forcing the Magic to miss their first 11 shots and commit four turnovers, opening the door for a Raptors comeback.Toronto had its own problems offensively, making just one field goal in the first five minutes of the period. The Raptors finally got it going when Lorenzo Brown's off-balance jumper in the lane started a 12-0 run that ended with Pascal Siakam draining a corner 3-pointer for an 84-78 lead with 4:52 to play. The Magic finally got a field goal when Vucevic hit a turnaround jumper in the lane to make it 84-80 with 4:34 left in the game. The Magic went scoreless over the next three minutes, allowing Toronto to stretch the lead to 91-80 on Lowry's 3-pointer with 1:39 to play. The Magic guards consistently beat Toronto off the dribble in the first half, leading to a nearly non-stop parade of layups and dunks and a 34-20 advantage on points in the paint.Toronto's guards countered from the perimeter, led by Lowry, who scored 16 points in the half. Four of the Raptors' last five field goals were 3-pointers, including one from Lowry that gave Toronto a 52-51 halftime advantage.TIP-INSRaptors: G DeMar DeRozan sat out the game with a thigh contusion. . G Evan Fournier missed his sixth straight game with a sprained knee. . The Magic had five dunks in the first quarter, including on four straight possessions.UP NEXTRaptors: Finish a road back-to-back at Cleveland tonight.Magic: Host Philadelphia Thursday.

GAME PREVIEW
Mar 19, 2018 NEW ORLEANS -- So now the fun begins and the oxygen masks rev up for the New Orleans Pelicans.Because their Feb. 7 game against the Indiana Pacers was postponed due to a leaky roof at the Smoothie Kings Center and rescheduled for Wednesday night, the Pelicans (40-30) face the rare challenge of playing three games in three nights, opening Tuesday night against the Dallas Mavericks (22-48).After hosting the Pacers on Wednesday, the Pelicans will conclude their three-day fitness test with a home game against the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday. With 12 games left and the Western Conference playoffs on the line, the Pelicans, coming off a 108-89 victory on Sunday over the short-handed Boston Celtics, realize that every game down the stretch becomes more critical. That victory snapped a string of four losses in five games for New Orleans."I think it is good for us because it was a good bounce-back game," said forward Anthony Davis, who had 34 points and 11 rebounds in the win over Boston. "You know, it was a tough one last night (a 107-101 loss to Houston) and then we come in (against) the No. 1 defensive team and score on them and then hold them to what they had, under 100. So it was good for us to kind of bounce back." The Pelicans held the Celtics to their lowest point total of the season and also limited Boston to a season-low 13 points in the fourth quarter. One of the highlights was the play of second-year forward Cheick Diallo, who continues to merit extra playing time by running the court and also blocking shots effectively. The second-round pick out of Kansas in 2016 was a raw, athletic talent when the Pelicans drafted him, and his season-high 17 points on 7-of-9 shooting against Boston indicated he could have a promising future. Diallo even sparked the crowd with some fiery hand gestures after several layups. He added six rebounds.Diallo is averaging 6.8 points and 4.9 rebounds per game since Jan. 30 while shooting 58 percent from the floor."It's a lot different now, because at the beginning of the season, I was not playing, so it's kind of frustrating," Diallo said. "To me, I feel like I'm growing as a player right now, defensively and offensively." "He did a great job," Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said. "When we were struggling a little bit, he gave us a big boost energy-wise. Just his running in our offense opened up everything. He did a great job of rim-running." Davis has taken notice of the young forward who is trying to pattern his game after his All-Star "big brother." "He's playing well," Davis said of Diallo. "He's coming in with a lot of energy. He plays hard. He plays well for us, so he just wants to come in and help the team any way possible, whether defensively or offensively." The Pelicans have won two of three meetings with Dallas this season, both on the road, but losing 128-120 at home on Dec. 29 when the Mavericks were blistering from long range, making 22 of 39 3-point attempts (.564).In three games this season against Dallas, Davis has averaged 28.7 points on .517 shooting, 10.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 2.0 steals and 2.0 blocks. Guard Jrue Holiday has averaged 19.7 points on .500 shooting and 6.0 assists. The Mavericks lost 114-106 on Saturday at Brooklyn, their third loss in four games. While 11 of the last 15 games against New Orleans have been decided by fewer than 10 points, Dallas will miss guard Dennis Smith Jr., who sprained his left ankle after scoring 21 points in 23 minutes. X-rays were negative, but he will not play against the Pelicans."We probably dodged a bullet," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said."I'm trusting their decision," Smith said. "I don't want to make anything worse. That's how I messed my knee up (in high school). So I'm trusting them."

GAME RECAP
Mar 20, 2018 NEW ORLEANS Anthony Davis scored 37 points, and the New Orleans Pelicans overcame the absence of second-leading scorer Jrue Holiday to beat the struggling Dallas Mavericks 115-105 on Tuesday night.Rajon Rondo added 19 points and 14 assists, and Ian Clark also scored 19 points for the Pelicans, who are in a tight, seven-team race for one of the final five Western Conference playoff spots.Cheick Diallo had his second straight game scoring in double figures for New Orleans to go with 14 rebounds.Davis made 15 of 21 shots, helped by Rondo setting him up for several easy baskets inside. New Orleans shot 52.7 percent (48 of 91) as a team.Dirk Nowitzki and Harrison Barnes each scored 19 for the Mavericks, who've lost three straight and four of five. Yogi Ferrell added 18 points, and Dwight Powell and Doug McDermott each scored 11 for Dallas, which kept the game competitive most of the way despite being out of playoff contention and without guard Dennis Smith Jr.The Mavs did not trail by more than eight points until Rondo's step-back jumper made it 112-103 with 1:45 left. Dallas even led late in the third quarter when Ferrell's 18-footer made it 80-77, but Davis tied it with a 3 at the horn.Dallas was still as close 106-103 after J. J. Barea's floater with 2:52 to go, but the Pelicans scored the next six points, highlighted Rondo's lob to Davis for an alley-oop dunk. The Mavericks led by as many as 13 points in the second quarter when McDermott's 10-foot jumper capped a 14-2 run. McDermott began the surge with a layup, and Kyle Collinsworth added eight quick points on a 3, three free throws and a 10-foot floater.New Orleans rallied to take the lead before halftime, however, thanks to a 15-2 run that began with Larry Drew's 3 and featured 10 points by Davis, including a one-handed alley-oop jam in which he spun away from Nerlens Noel to get open as Rondo released a lob from the perimeter.Davis' free throws completed the run and gave New Orleans a 50-49 lead, and the Pelicans led 54-52 at halftime after Diallo's jumper.TIP-INSMavericks: Smith was sitting out his 10th game this season and first since spraining his left ankle during a loss at Brooklyn on Saturday night. His absence meant Dallas was missing 15 points per game for the season, and 20 points per game in three meetings with New Orleans. ... The Mavs are 2-8 when Smith doesn't play. ... Barea finished with 10 points and Collinsworth eight.Pelicans: Holiday was sitting out his first game this season. Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said he was hoping for a quick recovery for Holiday, who averages 19 points and whose illness came as the Pelicans began a string of three games in five nights. ... Davis had averaged 28.7 points on 51.7 percent shooting in his previous three games against Dallas this season. ... Diallo's double-double was his third this season, his second in the NBA.UP NEXTMavericks: Host Utah on Thursday night.Pelicans: Host Indiana on Wednesday night.---More NBA coverage: https://apnews.com/tag/NBAbasketball

GAME PREVIEW
Mar 20, 2018 MINNEAPOLIS -- With every contending team in the Western Conference winning, seemingly, every night, any loss can seem demoralizing. The fourth through 10th teams in the West separated by a total of three games in the loss column, no one can afford a loss, let alone a poor stretch of games.Take the Minnesota Timberwolves, for example.Once sitting in third place in the West, Minnesota has tumbled without star Jimmy Butler. The Wolves started Sunday's game against Houston -- a possible first-round matchup -- in a tie for fifth place. New Orleans' win earlier in the day led to a true, four-way tie for fifth with the Pelicans, Utah, San Antonio and Minnesota all at 40-30.When the Wolves' comeback bid against the Rockets fell short in a 129-120 loss, they tumbled to eighth in the conference."We put ourselves into too big of a hole," Minnesota coach Tom Thibodeau said. "You can't do that. Where we are right now, the fight has to be greater." The Wolves host the Los Angeles Clippers (37-32) on Tuesday with Los Angeles clawing for any foothold in the climb to the playoffs. Just two games back in the loss column to Minnesota, the eight-place team, Los Angeles is lamenting its own slip.Sunday's 122-109 loss to streaking Portland was the Clippers' third in a row."We realize we don't have a lot of room for error," Los Angeles guard Lou Williams told the Los Angeles Daily News. "There's a lot of teams that don't have a lot of room for error. Dire is one word, but at the end of the day, we can only go out and play as hard as we can." After trading star Blake Griffin, the Clippers didn't seem like a playoff team. But Williams has continued his big scoring and Tobias Harris, who came over for Griffin, has averaged 20.1 points per game. Patrick Beverly, Avery Bradley and Danilo Gallinari are still out with injuries, but guards Austin Rivers and Milos Teodosic have gotten healthy.Williams scored 30 points Sunday against the Trail Blazers. DeAndre Jordan had seven points and 16 rebounds.Instead of health, travel might be the issue for the Clippers. Sunday's game in Los Angeles was their third in three cities in four nights. It was a one-game stop at home before beginning a four-game road trip at Minnesota. The Clippers are in a stretch of nine out of 11 games on the road."At this point, we've just got to win games," Austin Rivers told the Daily News. "I don't care if we have to play five games in five nights, we've just got to win games. Everybody's tired right now. Everybody's bruised. Everybody's trying to play catch-up."We've dropped a couple of games in a row. We've got to get it back going." Minnesota is hoping to draw on their comeback attempt against Houston and bring the same energy all game against Los Angeles. The Wolves trailed by as many as 25 to the Rockets before closing to within five points.Jeff Teague had 23 points and 11 assists. Andrew Wiggins scored 21 and Karl-Anthony Towns had 20 points and 18 rebounds.Newcomer Derrick Rose supplied a spark during the rally and finished with 14 points."He's just got to keep doing what he's doing," Thibodeau said of Rose. "He's playing great defense. I don't think people see it. He did it in the Washington game. We need everyone playing well." The loss was Minnesota's fifth in seven games."We wanted to win," forward Gorgui Dieng said. "Everybody likes to think about playoffs and every game matters. It was very disappointing."

GAME RECAP
Mar 20, 2018 MINNEOLIS Karl-Anthony Towns racked up 30 points and 10 rebounds for his NBA-best 60th double-double and Andrew Wiggins scored 27 points in an all-around performance, leading the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 123-109 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night that was critical for their push for the playoffs.Jeff Teague pitched in 20 points and 12 assists for the Timberwolves, who swept the four-game season series and sent the weary Clippers to their fourth consecutive loss on the commencement of a four-game, six-night trip.Jamal Crawford scored 20 points and Taj Gibson had 15 points and eight rebounds as the Timberwolves pushed their lead over the Clippers (37-33) to three games. With five losses in their last seven games, the Wolves (41-31) had fallen into eighth place in the Western Conference. Denver (38-33) is in ninth.DeAndre Jordan led the way for the Clippers with 18 points and 12 rebounds, but Tobias Harris played with flu-like symptoms and finished with only 10 points on 5-for-16 shooting, missing all five of his 3-point tries. Lou Williams and Sean Kilpatrick each had 15 points off the bench.Neither team led by more than six points until the Wolves awoke early in the third quarter and used a 13-0 run to build a 72-59 advantage.Just as they did on Sunday night to make a noncompetitive matchup Houston close in the waning minutes after the Rockets agitated them with some rough stuff, the Wolves snapped back when the Clippers engaged them in some extra-physical play. Towns took his share of hard contact underneath by the much burlier Jordan and Montrezl Harrell. Gibson and Teague each had blood drawn by inadvertent elbows or forearms to the face.Wiggins went 3-for-3 from 3-point range in the third, and he also matched his career high with three blocks while displaying energy and hustle on both ends of the floor. Wiggins has scored 20 or more points in nine of his last 11 games, going 21-for-45 from 3-point range in that span.CLIPPED OFFThe Clippers have recovered deftly from their 8-15 start, their record after a 113-107 loss at home to the Timberwolves on Dec. 6, and withstood the departure via trade of former franchise cornerstone Blake Griffin, but they've left themselves with no room in this postseason race for even a mini-slump.Coach Doc Rivers lamented his team's depleted roster before the game, with a total of 219 games missed by 11 players who've been injured. That includes 16 absences by Griffin but most notably still-missing Danilo Gallinari (51 games), Patrick Beverley (59 games) and Avery Bradley (14 games).''Every day it seems like something else,'' Rivers said.POSTSEASON POSITIONINGThe Timberwolves have the schedule in their favor in their quest to make the playoffs for the first time in 14 years, with eight of their final 10 games against teams below the cut for the postseason. They play Denver, one of their closest competitors, twice. But there are six other matchups against opponents whose next drama will be the draft lottery. The Clippers have 12 games left, with nine against teams on a postseason track plus one against the Nuggets. This matchup in Minnesota began a stretch of six out of seven games on the road.Denver also has a difficult remaining 11-game slate, with only two matchups, Wednesday at Chicago and April 7 at the Clippers, coming against opponents currently outside the top eight in either conference. The Nuggets, too, have five stops left on a seven-game road trip to finish the month.TIP-INSClippers: Jordan's streak of 15 or more rebounds ended at 10 straight games, which matched the longest run of his career and the most by any active NBA player. ... Harrell, who had 24 points against Portland on Sunday and was in double digits in 24 of his last 30 games, had nine points on 3-for-9 shooting.Timberwolves: Derrick Rose, who had nine points in six minutes, sprained his right ankle in the second quarter and didn't return. Rose, who joined the team less than two weeks ago, had 14 points in 19 minutes against the Rockets. ... The Wolves are 9-3 when Teague has 20 or more points. ... The Wolves improved to 30-15 against the Western Conference this season. They've swept the Clippers two other times in franchise history, in 1997-98 and 2003-04.UP NEXTClippers: At Milwaukee on Wednesday night.Timberwolves: At New York on Friday night.---More NBA basketball: https://apnews.com/tag/NBAbasketball

GAME PREVIEW
Mar 19, 2018 BOSTON -- Fresh off ending the Toronto Raptors' 11-game winning streak on Sunday in Toronto, the Oklahoma City Thunder bring their own six-game streak into TD Garden to face the short-handed Boston Celtics on Tuesday night.Russell Westbrook, who recently became the fourth player in NBA history with 100 triple-doubles, posted his 23rd of the season Sunday, amassing 37 points, 13 rebounds and 14 assists in the victory.Westbrook has averaged 25 points, 11.2 rebounds and 10.8 assists during the winning streak, capped by the show he put on north of the border Sunday. He also passed the 6,000-assist mark."I've been in that moment. You just feel everything is slowed down," said teammate Paul George, who had 22 points in the win. "He dictated the tempo. He dictated the game. And that's what it is, that's what it's like when you're a star player, a superstar player. You get in that moment." The Celtics have won their last two games against the Thunder, including a 101-84 victory on Nov. 3 at Oklahoma City. But OKC has won its last two visits to TD Garden -- and this time faces a depleted Celtics team coming off a loss at New Orleans on Sunday night."I am a man on a mission," Westbrook said. "We've got to take care of business. This time of year, you've got to turn it up a notch." Boston will not be getting healthier for this game as Kyrie Irving misses his fourth straight resting his sore left knee and Jaylen Brown is improving but still in the league's concussion protocol."I think he feels better and better," Celtics coach Brad Stevens, talking about Irving, said before Sunday's game. "He just doesn't quite feel 100 percent. So until that point then he'll be out."There was a chance that he would play (against the Pelicans). He just didn't quite feel that. And, again, we're going to make sure that he feels that way." Stevens reported that Brown was "getting closer." The Celtics have also lost Gordon Hayward (for almost the entire season), Marcus Smart (6-8 weeks with thumb surgery) and Daniel Theis (knee surgery, out for the year).Irving scored 22 of his 25 points in the second half to lead the Celtics to their seventh straight of what would be a 16-game winning streak at OKC in November.Westbrook scored 19 points and added 11 assists and six rebounds in that game but was just 7 of 20 from the floor.Anthony Davis scored 34 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help the Pelicans beat the Celtics on Sunday night, offsetting a big night by Boston rookie Jayson Tatum.Tatum scored 23 points, but the Celtics dropped their third in the last four games."For whatever reason, I thought we looked a step slow, but obviously, we are going to have moments where we struggle to score with this group right now," Stevens said. "We also rushed some shots and then they got into that rhythm and got it going. (The Pelicans) have been a good offensive team all year and they were hard to stop."

GAME RECAP
Mar 20, 2018 BOSTON Marcus Morris made a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left and the Boston Celtics stunned the Oklahoma City Thunder 100-99 on Tuesday night.Jayson Tatum led the Celtics with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Morris added 21 points as Boston snapped the Thunder's six-game win streak.Russell Westbrook finished with 27 points, eight rebounds and seven assists for Oklahoma City, which fell apart in the closing minute.Boston took an 82-81 lead in the fourth quarter on a 3-pointer by Shane Larkin, who finished with 17 points off the bench. The Thunder missed 15 of their first 21 3-point attempts before making four straight to go back in front 93-89.Boston closed to 99-97 on a 3 by Terry Rozier, and quickly fouled Carmelo Anthony with 7.7 seconds remaining. Anthony missed both attempts and the Celtics gathered the rebound.Out of the timeout, Tatum dribbled across the lane and found Morris on the wing for the go-ahead 3.Westbrook was able to get off a long 3-pointer on the Thunder's final possession, but it came up short at the buzzer. With Kyrie Irving sitting out for the fourth straight game nursing a sore left knee and Jaylen Brown still in the concussion protocol, Tatum and Rozier continued to pick up the slack for Boston. Both were active throughout. Rozier had probably the most electrifying stretch late in the second quarter when he scored eight straight points to give the Celtics their largest lead of the first half at 41-36.The series included Rozier picking up an errant pass by Westbrook and then gliding in for a one-handed dunk over Steven Adams on the ensuing fast break . Rozier finished with 14 points, six rebounds and six assists.Westbrook scored 12 points in the third quarter to give Oklahoma City a 75-65 cushion. But Boston closed the period with eight straight points, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer by Larkin.TIP-INSThunder: Went 10 of 27 from the 3-point line. ... Were outrebounded 52-44.Celtics: Tatum has scored 15 or more points in four of his last five games. He had only one such game in his nine previous games.INJURY UPDATESCeltics coach Brad Stevens said Irving will not accompany the team on its four-game road trip, which begins Friday at Portland.Instead, the All-Star point guard will be getting a second opinion on the knee, which has kept him sidelined since March 13.''That knee has been really sore, but he's worked really hard to manage it throughout the entire season,'' Stevens said. ''He's had some really good days recently. So I'm encouraged by it in the big picture.'' Brown did some light pregame shooting, though he remains in the NBA concussion protocol following his scary fall against the Timberwolves. Stevens said is to be determined whether he will go on the upcoming trip.UP NEXTThunder: Hosts Miami on Friday.Celtics: At Portland on Friday.---More NBA basketball: https://apnews.com/tag/NBAbasketball

GAME PREVIEW
Mar 19, 2018 SALT LAKE CITY - Stingy defense is taking Utah to places no one expected the Jazz to reach earlier in the season. The Jazz enter Tuesday's clash with the Atlanta Hawks riding a nine-game winning streak. Utah has won 21 of 23 overall to move into fifth place in the Western Conference standings, and there's no sign of that momentum grinding to a halt any time soon. One reason behind the surge is a defense that's absolutely crushing opponents. In the last nine games, the Jazz have allowed an average of 89.3 points and held opponents to 40.2 percent shooting. They are outrebounding teams 49.2 to 38.8 per game.Rudy Gobert is a catalyst in the elite defensive numbers. He has posted three straight games with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds and is averaging 19.3 points on 68.5 percent shooting, 13.7 rebounds and 2.4 blocks during the nine-game winning streak.Jazz coach Quin Snyder said there's no question in his mind that Gobert is the best defensive player in the league right now."It's an empirical fact," Snyder said after Utah's 103-97 win over Sacramento on Saturday. "Empirical from the standpoint that, if you look at every number, he's dominant. Like, not just good. He has been dominant." There's some question whether Gobert could earn NBA Defensive Player of the Year honors at season's end, simply because he has missed 26 games with knee injuries. But if his impact on the Jazz defense is looked at, Gobert feels like he has the best case to win the award. His defensive real plus-minus rating is a league-best 5.52 through only 44 games."I don't like to make my own case, but there's nobody that impacts the game defensively like I do in the whole world," Gobert said. "I watch other games and I don't see anyone." The Hawks (20-50) are the latest team tasked with figuring out how to survive and overcome Gobert and Utah's defense.Salt Lake City is the second stop in a six-game road trip for the Hawks. Atlanta kicked it off in Milwaukee on Saturday, where the Hawks fell 122-117 to the Bucks.Milwaukee lost despite getting 38 points from Taurean Prince for the second time in four games. Prince was 13 of 26 from the field, collected eight rebounds and also had two blocks. The Hawks made a late rally against the Bucks but couldn't recover when Dennis Schroder picked up his sixth foul -- and a technical foul -- with 2:46 left."Just giving up points when it's that close -- when it's that tight -- it's hard," Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer told reporters after the game. "It's a learning experience for all of us." The Hawks have dropped six straight games and seven of eight since the beginning of March. Porous defense is the primary culprit. In its last 12 games, Atlanta has allowed 115.7 points per game. The Hawks have struggled the most in the third quarter. In its last five games, Atlanta has surrendered an average of 36.2 points in the third quarter. The Hawks enjoyed one of their few positive moments of a tough season in their last meeting with the Jazz. Atlanta beat Utah 104-90 on Jan. 22 behind 20 points from Schroder and 17 points from Prince. This game will mark the 100th meeting between the Jazz and the Hawks.

GAME RECAP
Mar 21, 2018 SALT LAKE CITY Dennis Schroder scored a career-high 41 points, including 17 in the fourth quarter, and the Atlanta Hawks stunned the Utah Jazz 99-94 on Tuesday night.Dewayne Dedmon had 15 points and 15 rebounds to help the Eastern Conference-worst Hawks snap their six-game losing skid and end Utah's winning streak at nine. Taurean Prince made four free throws in the final 11 seconds to clinch the victory. The Jazz, who won 21 of 23 games in between losses to the Hawks, made their final field goal on Gobert's basket with 2:33 to play and missed their last five shots.Schroder on a variety of drives and bested his previous career high of 34 points, set in a 110-105 loss to Brooklyn on Jan. 12.With 2:07 to play and after another of his driving layups, Schroder flailed his arm and caught Ricky Rubio with a hand to the face. He was assessed a flagrant-1 foul and Rubio hit both free throws. Joe Ingles followed with two foul shots for Utah's final lead.Donovan Mitchell scored 24 points and Rubio had 23 for the Jazz.Mike Muscala's 3-pointer gave the Hawks a 70-69 lead early in the fourth quarter. After the Jazz responded with an 8-0 run, capped by Gobert's dunk, the Hawks edged back in front on Dedmon's dunk and Schroder's 3-pointer to make it 87-83.After the Hawks beat the Jazz 104-90 on Jan. 22, Utah was nine games under .500, and many players have pointed to that loss as a pivotal moment in the season.''I don't think anybody saw what was coming,'' Atlanta coach Mike Budenholzer said before the game about Utah's run.On that same trip, the Jazz started a remarkable turnaround that has launched them into the middle of the Western Conference playoff race. The Hawks held the Jazz to 32 percent shooting in the first half, but only shot 34 percent themselves and trailed 42-41 at the break. Schroder and Rubio each had 15 points.TIP-INSHawks: Prince scored 11 points. ... Kent Bazemore, Atlanta's third-leading scorer, missed his fourth game with a right knee bruise. ... The Hawks, second in the league in causing turnovers, forced the Jazz into 16 miscues and converted them into 26 points. ... The Hawks scored 36 points in the fourth quarter.Jazz: Derrick Favors sat out with left knee soreness. Utah is 2-3 without Favors. ... The Jazz went 6-for-33 from beyond the 3-point line. ... Mitchell was 9-of-28 from the field and 1-for-10 from 3-point range.LEGENDS IN THE HOUSEHall of Famers John Stockton and Karl Malone attended the game to support Stockton's son David, who is the midst of a 10-day contract with the Jazz after playing most of the season with Reno of the G League. David's mother, Nada, and his siblings often played pickup games on the arena floor while the famous point guard got treatment, showered and dressed during his 19-year career in Utah.UP NEXTHawks: Continue their trip at Sacramento on Thursday night.Jazz: Visit the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night.---More NBA basketball: https://apnews.com/tag/NBAbasketball

GAME PREVIEW
Mar 20, 2018 PHOENIX -- When the Detroit Pistons hosted the Phoenix Suns the week after Thanksgiving, they had a lot to be thankful for. They were eight games over .500, riding high. Now the Pistons are just trying to find a way to sneak into the playoffs, a goal that has long since vanished for the hapless Phoenix Suns, who have the worst record in the league.Detroit (31-39) was 14-6 after drubbing the Suns 131-107 at home Nov. 29, but the loss of point guard Reggie Jackson to torn ankle ligaments a month later put a severe crimp in their style. The Pistons have not been plus-eight since then as they prepare to visit the Suns (19-52) in the fifth game of a six-game road trip Tuesday at Talking Stick Resort Arena, having taken a dramatic downward turn without Jackson, who took part in 4-on-4 work and could return this week.Detroit broke a three-game losing streak with a 106-90 victory at Sacramento while halting a 12-game road losing skid on Monday, but has lost seven of nine and 10 of 13.The Pistons are 17-33 since their first meeting with the Suns and are 8-13 since the acquisition of power forward Blake Griffin, the move that was supposed to push into the playoffs. They are six games behind eighth place Milwaukee in the Eastern Conference with 12 to play, although only four of those opponents have a winning record, a slice of hope.Griffin had 26 points, nine rebounds and seven assists against the Kings and Andre Drummond had four points and 18 rebounds. Both Griffin and Reggie Bullock had three 3-pointers, as did reserve guard Anthony Tolliver."This time of year, you take any way however you can get it," said Griffin, who won his first road game with Detroit. "You get one on the road after being on the road for eight nights already, it's always great. So we took care of business. Now we've got to do it again." The Suns have lost eight in a row, 18 out of 19 and 23 of 25 since beating Denver in mid-January. The only games they have won in two months were at home against Dallas on Jan. 31 and at Memphis on Feb. 28.The victory over the Grizzlies broke an 0-for-February skid; the Suns had lost their first 10 games of the month. They are 0-for-March in eight games, with five remaining in the month after facing Detroit.Once again, the Suns are likely Tuesday to be without their top two scorers, Devin Booker and TJ Warren. Warren suffered a left knee sprain in a 124-109 loss to a Golden State team playing without Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and Klay Thompson on Saturday, and Booker has been dealing with a sprained hand that was jammed in practice on Wednesday.Booker, averaging a career-high 24.9 points in his third season, has missed 17 games with various injuries this year.Rookie small forward Josh Jackson, 6-foot-8, has taken on much of the scoring load in the recent absences of Booker and Warren, and he had a season-high 36 points against the Warriors, often matched up against Draymond Green."It was great," Jackson said."I had a lot of fun out there. Talked to him a little bit. He actually knows me pretty well. He was actually calling out a couple of my moves before I did them. Yeah, it was real fun out there playing against him." Jackson's 36 points were the highest in franchise history by a rookie in a home game. Walter Davis scored 40, 39 and 38 points in 1977-78, all of them on the road. Amar'e Stoudemire had 38 on the road in 2001-02 and Dennis Layton had 37 on the road in 1971-72."A lot of it is communication, us understanding him and him understanding what we're looking for," Suns interim coach Jay Triano said of Jackson's development."He's a fast player, and he came in and was accelerating and tried to play super fast. And then he slowed down and got pace. He's continued to work on his shot. He stays after practice. And somewhere in January, he's just kind of taken off."I'm happy because it takes some guys a long time to figure this league out and what they can excel at and he did it very fast. And night-in and night-out, he's been pretty solid for us." Jackson, the fourth player taken in the 2017 draft, is averaging 17.3 points, 6.2 rebounds and 1.8 assists in his last 20 games.

GAME PREVIEW
Mar 19, 2018 PORTLAND, Ore. -- The team with the NBA's best record -- the Houston Rockets -- comes calling to Moda Center Tuesday night, and the Portland Trail Blazers mean no disrespect. They're taking nothing for granted. But the Trail Blazers are, in a phrase popularized in an earlier era of Blazer basketball, "Red Hot 'n Rollin'." Portland (43-26) is riding the wave of a 13-game win streak. The Blazers haven't been on such a tear since December 2007, when Nate McMillan was head coach and second-year pros Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge were the team leaders."Really, it's all about us," forward Ed Davis said. "If we play well, we're going to win. We're not really worried about the opponents right now." The Blazers have won 18 of their last 19 games at Moda Center dating to before Christmas. They are in third place in the Western Conference, two games ahead of Oklahoma City (42-29)."During this entire run, a lot of the things we've done have been about us," point guard Damian Lillard said. "We're communicating, being on a string defensively, locking into the scouting report, trusting each other on offense and making (opponents) have to work to stop us. Those are things we control. If we do those things well, we've been on the winning end a lot. If we do those things, which I think we will, no matter who we play, we should be able win." Coach Terry Stotts was asked if the pressure has mounted on his players through an overall win streak that began with a victory over Golden State on Feb. 14. Portland's last loss was 101-82 against Utah at home on Feb. 11, five weeks ago."Not in our situation, because of the standings and how close the race is," Stotts said. "If this were in November or December, and (the Blazers were on) a streak? Maybe. But the emphasis on winning games and maintaining our position in the standings is paramount. So it's not that big of a deal right now." The Rockets (56-14) are on some kind of run, too, having won 22 of their last 23 games. James Harden is the leading candidate for the NBA's Most Valuable Player Award and backcourt mate Chris Paul is playing some of his best ball in recent years. But coach Mike D'Antoni knows another key has been the defensive play of small forward P. J. Tucker, who has started the last 18 games."He's one of the best defenders I've ever seen," D'Antoni told the Houston Chronicle.Asked if Tucker should make the NBA All-Defensive team, D'Antoni replied, "I don't know why he wouldn't. It doesn't get much better than him." Tucker would just as soon win an NBA championship as make the All-Defensive team."It would be cool, but for years, when I was mentioned as a Defensive Player of the Year (candidate), they said, 'Are you making the playoffs?' " the 32-year-old journeyman said. "We never did. I want to win." Another key piece is power forward Ryan Anderson, who has played the past two games after missing the previous eight with hip and groin injuries. Anderson scored 14 points in 17 minutes off the bench in Sunday's 129-120 win at Minnesota, sinking 4 of 5 from 3-point range."I just need to get my rhythm back," Anderson said. "There is no pain now. I'll get it pretty quick here."

GAME PREVIEW
Time: 7:00 PM EDT Venue: Capital One Arena, Washington, D. C., 20004 / WASHINGTON -- The Dallas Stars visit the Washington Capitals on Tuesday night hoping to salvage the finale of a six-game road trip and boost their standing in the Western Conference wild-card race. Dallas is 0-3-2 on the trip after dropping a 4-3 decision on Sunday in Winnipeg. Mattias Janmark and Jamie Benn scored for the Stars (38-27-8). Adding injury to insult, goalie Ben Bishop left the game midway through the first period with a lower-body issue and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. Kari Lehtonen came on Sunday and made 17 saves." He stepped up for us, made some huge saves," Stars defenseman John Klingberg told NHL.com. "We know we have two good goalies and they're probably our best players every night now, so we depend on both of them." The Stars trailed 3-2 after two periods and pressed until the Jets scored on an empty-netter. Despite the losing streak, Dallas is tied with the Los Angeles Kings for the second wild-card spot, but the Kings hold the tiebreaker having played one fewer game." We know we've got to win games, we know there is going to be movement," Janmark told the Dallas Morning News regarding the tight standings. "We're right there, and we've just got to stay alive here when we're going through this tough stretch. Then, I think once we can turn the page here, we can make a push." To do so, they will have to start putting the puck in the net more consistently. The Stars outshot the Jets 30-24 and had numerous quality chances to score. Dallas has just 16 goals in the last eight games and is 1-4-3 in that span." I'm not sure," Hitchcock told the Morning News when asked about the offensive problems. "I think whether it's squeezing our sticks or just going through phases where you're missing chances, I'm not sure. In these games, we've needed a goal at the right time, and it hasn't happened. That's how close it's been." Washington (41-24-7) holds two-point lead over Pittsburgh in the Metropolitan Division, but the Capitals squandered a chance to add the that lead on Sunday. Facing a Flyers team that played the night before, the Capitals dropped a 6-3 decision in Philadelphia. Three Washington turnovers led directly Philadelphia goals as the Capitals' four-game win streak came to an ignominious end." We shoot ourselves in the foot, obviously," Alex Ovechkin told the Washington Post. John Carlson had a goal and an assist, and Ovechkin and Chandler Stephenson scored for Washington. Philipp Grubauer made 29 saves." We have to start playing playoff hockey," Jay Beagle told NHL.com. "You have to start right now. Teams that are fighting for spots and teams that are a little more desperate, we have to match how desperate they are, and we have to go after them rather than sitting back and waiting for the game to come to us." The Capitals are expected to again be without injured center Evgeny Kuznetsov (upper body) and defenseman Brooks Orpik (lower body) on Tuesday night. Goaltender Braden Holtby, who was solid in Friday's win over the Islanders after sitting for four games, is expected to get the start Tuesday. Coach Barry Trotz indicated Monday that Holtby and Philipp Grubauer could split the final 10 games of the regular season." Whoever's going good and who we feel is the hottest at the right time we're going to go with," Trotz told the Washington Post. Holtby has struggled in limited action against the Stars, posting a 1-4 record with a 4.32 goals-against average (GAA) and an .854 save percentage. Lehtonen sits 12-10-3 this season with a 2.46 GAA and .913 save percentage. Against Washington in his career, he is 18-6-3 with a 2.61 GAA and .921 save percentage.

GAME RECAP
/ WASHINGTON John Carlson scored the go-ahead goal with five minutes remaining to help the Washington Capitals beat the Dallas Stars 4-3 on Tuesday night and extend their lead atop the Metropolitan Division. T. J. Oshie, Matt Niskanen and Alex Ovechkin also scored for Washington, which leads the tight Metropolitan by four points over Pittsburgh and Columbus. The Capitals are on pace for their third consecutive division title and playoff appearance with nine games remaining. Carlson's goal tied him with the Stars' John Klingberg for the NHL lead among defensemen with 61 points. It was also a dagger to Dallas' fading playoff hopes. The Stars finished their road trip 0-4-2 and sit outside the final playoff position in the Western Conference and could need 14 of a possible 18 points before the end of the season to get in. Braden Holtby stopped 24 of the 27 shots he faced to beat the Stars for just the second time in six career starts, a fine performance as the 2016 Vezina Trophy winner tries to get his game together before the playoffs. Kari Lehtonen, who could be counted on to start every game for Dallas down the stretch with Ben Bishop out, allowed four goals on 32 shots in the loss that included goals from Tyler Seguin, Jamie Benn and Alexander Radulov. A sluggish first period took a turn about 15 minutes in when Washington's Nicklas Backstrom tripped fellow Swede Klingberg to put Dallas on the power play. With the Capitals converging on the puck at the blue line, Seguin was left wide open and scored his 39th goal of the season 16:04 in. Two more Capitals penalties gave the Stars opportunities to build the lead, but when they couldn't - and Washington had better short-handed chances than it gave up on the power play - it was 1-1 at 4:07 of the second on Oshie's 16th. Washington took the lead less than 90 seconds later on Niskanen's harmless-looking point shot that deflected off Stars defenseman Greg Pateryn's raised stick and past Lehtonen. As good as the Capitals' penalty kill was in the second period, the Stars scored seconds after a power play expired as Radulov deflected Klingberg's shot into the net at 11:48. Klingberg's 61 points are the most among NHL defensemen. Ovechkin continued the back-and-forth scoring on the power play 14:31 into the second, his league-leading 44th goal this season and 602nd of his career to pass Jari Kurri for sole possession of 19th on the career list. It was his 22nd career goal against Lehtonen, tied for the most against any goalie with the New York Rangers' Henrik Lundqvist. A turnover by Washington's Lars Eller paved the way for Benn to tie the score again at 18:15 when he muscled by a defender to the net and waited out Holtby to score his 27th of the season. Carlson scored with 4:59 left to put the Capitals up and almost end the Stars' season. NOTES: Eller was benched for more than eight minutes after his giveaway. ... Capitals D Brooks Orpik returned after missing one game with a lower-body injury. C Evgeny Kuznetsov missed his second consecutive game with an upper-body injury. ... Stars D Marc Methot missed his fourth game in a row with a hand injury, while RW Brett Ritchie (lower body) and C Jason Spezza (back) were also out. GAME PREVIEW
Time: 7:00 PM EDT Venue: PNC Arena, Raleigh, N. C., 27607 / RALEIGH, N. C. -- The Carolina Hurricanes will have to be efficient to make the necessary elevation in the Eastern Conference standings to reach the playoff level. They play a team Tuesday night at PNC Arena that's in worse shape in the Western Conference. That's the Edmonton Oilers. Just about every time the Hurricanes look to be down for the count, they give themselves a chance." I think our group has got mental toughness, I really do," Carolina coach Bill Peters said. "We've had a few gut punches this year. We've had a few here recently. You have to pick yourself up off the canvass and keep going." Carolina snapped a three-game losing streak with Sunday's 4-3 road decision over the New York Islanders. That marked only the second victory for the Hurricanes during a seven-game stretch." I thought five-on-five we were real good," Peters said, noting that penalties have been troublesome. "If we clean that part of the game up, we'll be a better team coming down the stretch." The game might have produced the best performance of the season from center Victor Rask, Peters said. That's the type of emerging efforts the Hurricanes will require in order to climb back into playoff position. Carolina has only five home games remaining. The Hurricanes are 16-14-6 on home ice, so they must win their remaining games in front of their fans in order to win a majority of their home games for the season." Everyone knows how to play," said Peters, who gave the team Monday off. "If that's the matchup you draw, you have to go out and win that matchup." Edmonton has shown some recent life with a 4-2-1 stretch in its last seven games." I try to give this team a chance," Oilers goalie Al Montoya said. Yet frustration continues to mount for the Oilers because they've failed so often on power plays. They have the fewest power-play goals in the league, a situation that was magnified with the 0-of-5 performance in man advantages in Sunday's 3-1 loss at Tampa Bay." That's been the tale of the tape lately with the power play," Oilers coach Todd McLellan said. Yet McLellan isn't calling for an overhaul on the power-play units." Sometimes it's asking them just to relax," McLellan said. "Right now, we're squeezing the sticks a little bit in that situation. We're so desperate for a power-play goal that when we do create an opportunity we're not finishing it. ... The power play has to get better." It's certainly a topic that's festering." I don't know how much more we can do on the power play without scoring a goal," Oilers center Ryan Strome said. "We've been playing some good hockey lately, but (there's) a bad taste in our mouth." On Monday, the Oilers recalled defenseman Dillon Simpson on an emergency basis from Bakersfield of the American Hockey League. He has played three career NHL games with the Oilers. Perhaps Simpson can have a similar impact to right winger Ty Rattie, who was called up for Bakersfield last week and scored two goals in two games. For the Oilers, Tuesday's game is the third stop on a four-game East Coast trip. Carolina won the first meeting of the season with the Oilers, claiming a 5-3 decision on Oct. 17. That marked the team's first road victory of the season. Teuvo Teravainen registered two goals in that game.

GAME RECAP
/ RALEIGH, N. C. Leon Draisaitl had a goal and three assists and the Edmonton Oilers rode three-goal first period to a 7-3 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night. Drake Caggiula, Matt Benning and Ryan Strome scored in a span of 4:24 in the opening period after Carolina jumped to a 1-0 lead, and Edmonton led the rest of the way. Pontus Aberg, Yohann Auvitu and Jesse Puljujarvi also scored as the Oilers got six goals on their first 22 shots. Cam Talbot made 28 saves for Edmonton. Brock McGinn, Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen scored for the Hurricanes, who have lost six of eight. Scott Darling allowed three goals on his first nine shots and six on 22 but was left in the game. He finished with 23 saves. The scoring began early in a wild, five-goal first period, including a few unusual tallies. McGinn opened the scoring with a no-look, through-the-legs backhand pass that was accidentally pushed in by Auvitu. Edmonton responded with its three-goal flurry. Caggiula tied it 23 seconds after McGinn scored, and Benning gave the Oilers the lead with an extraordinary goal two minutes later. After his initial shot went off Darling's leg pad and up onto the glass behind the net, Benning waited for the puck to come down, swung his stick like a baseball bat, and hit the puck off Darling's back and into the net. Strome finished the burst with another atypical goal. Darling stopped Strome's stuff attempt, but the puck wiggled free, and defenseman Justin Faulk pushed it into his own net. Aho kept the Hurricanes within one with a power-play goal late in the first, but the Oilers scored three times again in the second period to turn it into a rout. Just 1:32 into the period, Faulk inexplicably backhanded a no-look pass from the corner to the front of his own net. Draisatl took the free puck and sent a pass to Aberg, who buried it along the inside post for his first goal as an Oiler since being acquired at the trade deadline. Auvitu got in on the scoring midway through the second when he finished a 3-on-2 rush with a wrist shot past Darling's glove, and Draisatl joined the party with a one-timer from the right faceoff circle, his 23rd this season. Puljujarvi provided the finishing touch when he gathered his own rebound and pushed a backhander through Darling's legs. NOTESDraisaitl surpassed 200 career points. ... Aho and Teravainen extended their point streaks to six games. ... Oilers F Connor McDavid played in his 200th NHL game. ... GAME PREVIEW
Time: 7:00 PM EDT Venue: Madison Square Garden, New York, N. Y., 10001 / NEW YORK -- Now it's the New York Rangers' turn to try and do something that more than a quarter of the NHL has failed to do over the last two-plus weeks: Beat the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Rangers will attempt to slow the hottest team in the league Tuesday night, when the Blue Jackets visit Madison Square Garden for the final game this season between the Metropolitan Division rivals. The Blue Jackets ran their winning streak to eight games Monday night, when they came back from a two-goal deficit to edge the host Boston Bruins, 5-4. The Rangers last played Saturday, when they fell to the host St. Louis Blues, 4-3, in overtime. While the Rangers (32-32-8) are playing out the string after embarking upon a rebuilding project in February, the surge by the Blue Jackets (40-28-5) has dramatically enhanced their playoff prospects. Columbus, which was tied for the Eastern Conference's second wild card before its winning streak began on March 4, is now six points ahead of the Florida Panthers, who are in ninth place in the East, and tied for third place in the Metropolitan with the Philadelphia Flyers. The two teams are two points behind the second-place Pittsburgh Penguins and four points behind the first-place Washington Capitals. The Blue Jackets' streak appeared imperiled Monday, when they trailed the Bruins 3-1 late in the third period. The victory was the fourth one-goal decision over the eight-game run for Columbus." We're a resilient group -- I don't think we played nearly our best, found a way to just stick with it," said Blue Jackets right winger Cam Atkinson, who scored the game-winning goal 2:55 into overtime. "It was a huge two points." The Blue Jackets' No. 1 goalie, Sergei Bobrovsky, will likely draw the start after backup Joonas Korpisalo earned the win Monday by recording 34 saves. Bobrovsky last played Saturday, when he stopped 23 shots and was credited with the win in Columbus' 2-1 win over the Ottawa Senators. The Rangers will shift away from evaluation mode for at least one game Tuesday, when star goalie Henrik Lundqvist returns to the lineup after sitting in favor of rookie Alexandar Georgiev the previous three games. Lundqvist hasn't played since March 10, when he made 32 saves and took the loss as the Rangers fell to the Florida Panthers, 4-3, in the shootout." Ten games to go, we've got to make the most out of this stretch here," Lundqvist told reporters following practice Monday. "Nobody knows who's going to be here next year. But right now, let's make the most of it as a group and we'll see how many wins we end up with in the end." Bobrovsky is 7-10-2 in 20 career regular-season appearances against the Rangers. Lundqvist is 11-7-1 in 20 games against the Blue Jackets. The home team has won each of the first three games this season between the Rangers and Blue Jackets. Columbus earned a 3-1 win at Nationwide Arena on Oct. 13 and a 2-0 victory on Nov. 17. New York notched a 5-3 win at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 6.

GAME RECAP
/ NEW YORK Artemi Panarin had three goals and an assist, Sergei Bobrovsky made 29 saves and the Columbus Blue Jackets extended their winning streak to nine games with a 5-3 victory over the New York Rangers on Tuesday night. Markus Nutivaara and Alexander Wennberg also scored for the Blue Jackets, who have surged into a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. It is Columbus' longest winning streak since its 16-game run last season from Nov. 29, 2016, to Jan. 3, 2017. Chris Kreider and Mika Zibanejad scored power-play goals and Kevin Hayes had a short-handed goal for the Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist made 26 saves in his first start since March 10 against Florida. Lundqvist was briefly shaken up when Matt Calvert upended him and knocked his helmet off with five minutes remaining. With Columbus leading 3-2 in the third period, Lundqvist made a nice save as Cam Atkinson drove toward the net, but Panarin poked the puck free and in for his 24th goal at 11:19. Kreider scored his 14th with 1:52 remaining to get the Rangers to 4-3. Panarin added an empty-netter for the hat trick and his 25th of the season. Earlier, Panarin made it 2-0 in the second. Defenseman Ian Cole, acquired at the trade deadline, sent a pass to Panarin, who wristed it past Lundqvist at 9:28. Hayes then had three impressive scoring chances in the second half of the second period. Bobrovsky stopped him on a short-handed breakaway with about nine minutes remaining. A few minutes later, with the Rangers again short-handed, Jesper Fast grabbed a deflected pass and sent Hayes in on another breakaway and this time he beat Bobrovsky to make it 2-1 with his 21st goal of the season at 13:44. Hayes also hit the post in the final minute of the second. Nutivaara made it 3-1 in the third with his fifth of the season at 4:05. Zibanejad got the Rangers closer at 3-2 with his 25th goal of the season at 7:16. He has nine points (six goals, three assists) in a five-game point streak. Thomas Vanek, another trade-deadline acquisition, helped the Blue Jackets open the scoring. He sent a backhand pass from behind the net to Wennberg in the slot and he wristed the puck past Lundqvist at 14:05 of the first period for his eighth goal. Lundqvist briefly kept it a one-goal deficit when he stopped Vanek as the Blue Jackets came in on a 2-on-0 break less than four minutes into the second. NOTES: Defenseman Seth Jones has missed the past two games and is day to day with an upper-body injury. ... Former Rangers forward Brandon Dubinsky was a healthy scratch for Columbus. ... Zibanejad played in his 400th game. ... The Rangers are 5-3-2 since the trade deadline. UP NEXTBlue Jackets: Host the Florida Panthers on Thursday night. GAME PREVIEW
Time: 7:00 PM EDT Venue: Barclays Center, Brooklyn, NY, 11217 / NEW YORK -- The New York Islanders will get the first of two consecutive reminders of what once was and what could have been Tuesday night when they continue a five-game homestand by hosting the Pittsburgh Penguins at Barclays Center. The Islanders continued their months-long descent toward the bottom of the NHL on Sunday when they fell to the visiting Carolina Hurricanes 4-3. The Penguins last played Thursday when they beat the host Montreal Canadiens 5-3. While the two-time defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins (41-26-5) enter Tuesday in the thick of a tight race for first place in the Metropolitan Division, the Islanders (30-32-10) are left to wonder how much farther they can sink after losing three in a row and 11 of their last 12 (1-7-4). The skid has not only dropped the Islanders into last place in the Metropolitan, it could, by faceoff Tuesday, have them as close to last in the entire NHL as the second wild card in the Eastern Conference. Such a scenario was hard to envision earlier this season for the Islanders, who appeared to be on the rise after giving the Penguins all they could handle in a 2013 playoff series, advancing to the 2016 Eastern Conference semifinals against the Tampa Bay Lightning, whom New York hosts on Thursday, and missing the playoffs last season by one point." We take pride in what we do," Islanders center Anders Lee said after scoring two goals Sunday. "There's a lot of strong guys in this room. This is pretty painful. It sucks, but we come in and we work hard. We work extremely hard. We just don't have much to show for it, so that's why it feels as bad as it (does)." The Penguins, meanwhile, are looking to achieve something that has eluded them during their consecutive championships: a division title. Pittsburgh, which finished second to the Washington Capitals each of the previous two seasons, heads into Tuesday two points behind the division-leading Washington Capitals and two points ahead of the Philadelphia Flyers." I just think it's important for us to try to put ourselves in the very best possible position to succeed and that's the way we look at it," Penguins coach Mike Sullivan said after practice Monday afternoon. "We're going to control what we can. We're going to take each game as it comes and we're going to try to put our very best on the ice each and every game." For the Penguins on Tuesday night, that could include Matt Murray at goalie for the first time this month. Murray has been sidelined since suffering a concussion on Feb. 26, but Sullivan said he looked good in practice Monday and is a candidate to start against the Islanders. Pittsburgh has gone 5-3-1 with Casey DeSmith and Tristan Jerry splitting time at goalie in Murray's absence. Jarry had 17 saves in Thursday's win over the Canadiens. Islanders coach Doug Weight said Sunday that he didn't know if starter Jaroslav Halak or rookie backup Christopher Gibson would draw the start Tuesday. Halak took the loss Sunday when he stopped 35 shots against the Hurricanes.

GAME RECAP
/ NEW YORK Mathew Barzal and Adam Pelech scored in the first period and the New York Islanders went on to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-1 on Tuesday night. Anders Lee had a goal in the third period and Jordan Eberle added an empty-netter to help the Islanders snap a three-game skid with just their second win in 13 games (2-7-4). Christopher Gibson, pulled in his last start after giving up five goals on 12 shots against Washington last Thursday, stopped 36 shots and has both wins for New York in its recent stretch. Conor Sheary scored for Pittsburgh, which was 5-1-1 in its previous seven but fell four points behind first-place Washington in the tight Metropolitan Division. Columbus pulled into a tie with the Penguins for second at 87 points - Pittsburgh holds the tiebreaker over the Blue Jackets. Matt Murray, returning after missing nine games due to a concussion, finished with 36 saves for the Penguins. Pittsburgh, playing for the first time since winning at Montreal last Thursday, came in with the NHL's best power play at 25.8 percent and went 0 for 1 against the Islanders - last in penalty-killing at 74.9 percent. New York, which will likely miss the postseason for the second straight year, led 2-0 after one period and outworked the Penguins for much of the second before the two-time defending Stanley Cup champions picked up the pressure. Sheary got Pittsburgh on the scoreboard as he took a pass across the slot from Phil Kessel and one-timed it past Gibson from the right circle for his 15th with 2:46 to go in the middle period. It came on the Penguins' 26th shot on goal. Lee got a pass from Barzal and put it past Murray from the left side for his career-high 36th at 5:41 of the third to make it 3-1. Barzal's assist was his 55th, tying him with Nicklas Backstrom (2007-08) for the second-most by a rookie since 1995. Penguins star Sidney Crosby tops the list with 63 in 2005-06. Murray made a nice stop against Andrew Ladd on an Islanders rush to keep it a two-goal game with 4 1/2 minutes to go. Eberle capped the scoring with his empty-net goal, his 25th, two minutes later. Barzal got the Islanders on the board 5:10 into the game as he tipped a hard shot from the top of the right circle by Johnny Boychuk past Murray for his 20th. Riley Sheahan had a chance to tie it for the Penguins a little more than a minute later when he got the puck after Barzal fell down by his blue line. Sheahan skated in on Gibson, but the goalie denied his attempt from the left side. Pelech made it 2-0 with 9:27 left in the opening period as he got a pass from Tanner Fritz and fired it past Murray from straightaway for his third. Gibson also had a nice stop on Carl Hagelin from between the circles with about 2 1/2 minutes left in the first to keep the Penguins off the scoreboard. NOTES: Crosby's 13-game point streak against the Islanders was snapped. He had nine goals and 14 assists against them during that stretch. ... Sheary got his third goal since Jan. 20, including two at Philadelphia on March 7. ... Pittsburgh fell short of its first season sweep against the Islanders. The Penguins won the first three meetings, including two in overtime. ... Islanders D Thomas Hickey played in his 400th career game. ... New York D Nick Leddy celebrated his 27th birthday. Time: 7:30 PM EDT Venue: Little Caesars Arena, Detroit, MI, 48201 / The Detroit Red Wings will welcome an old friend back to town Tuesday when they face the Philadelphia Flyers. Flyers goaltender Petr Mrazek was traded to Philadelphia by the Red Wings on Feb. 19, and Mrazek is proving to be the gift that keeps on giving. Philadelphia's 6-3 win Sunday over the Washington Capitals was Mrazek's fifth in a Flyers uniform. That, coupled with a Philadelphia playoff appearance this spring, will bump the 2018 fourth-round draft pick the Red Wings got for Mrazek up to a third-round choice." Petr is playing really well and I wish him all the best," Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard said. Mrazek was plagued by inconsistency with the Red Wings and that has continued to be an issue during his brief tenure with the Flyers. He won his first three starts for Philly and then went 0-3-1 in his next four decisions. The win Sunday ended Mrazek's two-game skid. Mrazek was pulled from his previous start against the Columbus Blue Jackets after allowing four goals on 10 shots." I think Pete had lots of success on the way up to the NHL, being a competitor and his moxie and I think as the years here went along," said Red Wings coach Jeff Blashill, who also coahced Mrazek with Grand Rapids in the American Hockey League. "I think he realized he had to work at his technique and really work at making that better and I think he's made a concerted effort." It didn't always show, but I think over the last little bit it really started to come where his technique was starting to get himself to that spot." The Flyers have won two in a row, ending a 1-6-1 skid. Captain Claude Giroux has points in nine of his last 10 games and 11-15-26 totals in the past 19 games. Winger Wayne Simmonds scored twice in the victory over the Capitals. Philadelphia is 17-2-1 when Simmonds scores a goal. Second-year center Travis Konecny has four points in the past four games, and rookie Oskar Lindblom netted his first NHL goal in the win over Washington." That's what winners are made of," Simmonds told Philly.com. "That's the type of effort we're going to need out of every single guy in this dressing room." Nothing is going right for the Red Wings, who are winless in 10 games (0-9-1), the first time they've hit double digits without a victory since the 1981-82 season. Detroit is 0-8-1 in March, and the team hasn't gone an entire month without a win since November 1982 (0-8-5). Blashill cited a Philadelphia source -- Eagles quarterback Nick Foles -- when assessing what his team is currently up against." Nick Foles talked about it after they won the Super Bowl, how much adversity he's had to fight through," Blashill told detroitredwings.com. "You hope to come out stronger on the other side. That's what life's about." This isn't supposed to be easy. This is the National Hockey League. Sports isn't supposed to be easy, it's supposed to be hard. That's why it feels so good when you win. So we've got to find a way to keep fighting here."

GAME RECAP
/ DETROIT Frans Nielsen scored his NHL-record 22nd shootout winner and the Detroit Red Wings edged the Philadelphia Flyers 5-4 on Tuesday night to end their 10-game losing streak. Dylan Larkin scored twice, Luke Glendending had a goal and Evgeny Svechnikov got his first in the NHL for the Red Wings. Jimmy Howard made 27 saves through overtime and stopped all three attempts he faced in the shootout. Sean Couturier, Matt Read, Shayne Gostisbehere and Travis Konecny scored for the Flyers. Larkin gave Detroit a 1-0 lead 6:08 into the second period, whipping a wrist shot past ex-Red Wings goalie Petr Mrazek on the stick side. Glendening made it 2-0 just 1:51 later when he got loose down the right wing while killing a penalty and snapped a high wrist shot over the glove-side shoulder of Mrazek. Before the power play was up, the Flyers got one back. Claude Giroux's shot hit the post, but Couturier slammed the rebound into the net for his 30th of the season. The Red Wings restored their two-goal advantage at 9:57. Svechnikov corralled a loose puck and zipped it by Mrazek, who was then replaced by Alex Lyon. Mrazek stopped 16 of 19 shots before Lyon made 11 saves in relief. Read got the Flyers back within one when his shot found its way past Howard through traffic 7:46 into the third. Gostisbehere tied it on a Philadelphia power play at 9:40, wiring a wrist shot over Howard's glove-side shoulder. Larkin's quick shot from the slot put Detroit back in front at 14:06, but just 28 seconds later Konecny tied it when his shot crossed the goal line a split second before the net was dislodged. NOTES: Glendening's goal was Detroit's eighth short-handed this season and the 10th given up by Philadelphia. ... Flyers LW Michael Raffl (lower body) missed his first game of the season. . With three assists, Giroux moved past Eric Lindros (659 points) into fifth place on the Flyers' career scoring list. UP NEXTPredators: Host the New York Rangers on Thursday night. GAME PREVIEW
Time: 7:30 PM EDT Venue: Canadian Tire Centre, Kanata, ON, Canada, K2V 1AS / OTTAWA -- Once again creeping close to a playoff spot, the Florida Panthers simply cannot afford to lose another game to the Ottawa Senators. To that end, the Panthers are expected to go with backup James Reimer in goal when the teams meet Tuesday night at Canadian Tire Centre. Reimer was on the bench watching Roberto Luongo post his 76th career shutout in Montreal against the Canadiens on Monday, just as he was when the Panthers fumbled away two points in Florida when the Senators visited March 12 and walked away with a 5-3 victory. The Panthers, who are now three points back of the New Jersey Devils for the wild-card spot with two games in hand, are unlikely to go with the 38-year old Luongo in back-to-back games even if the Senators had not lit him up for five goals on 20 shots a week ago. Luongo made 28 saves to tie Tony Esposito and Ed Belfour on the career shutout list in Montreal." The focus, for me, isn't on reminiscing," Luongo told reporters when asked about his place in history. "It's about what's ahead of us right now and winning hockey games." Reimer, who had plenty of success at Canadian Tire Center when he played for the Toronto Maple Leafs, has a 12-5-2 lifetime against the Senators, including a 2.45 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage. His last game was a 46-save shutout over the Boston Bruins on March 15. The Panthers needed 40 shots to put two past Canadiens backup Antti Niemi on Monday." It was nice to see the guys stick with it and generating chances," Panthers coach Bob Boughner told reporters. "It was a big win." Ottawa had a three-game winning streak stopped in a 2-1 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Saturday. The Senators believe they literally dodged a bullet when 20-goal scoring winger Ryan Dzingel survived taking a shot from linemate Mike Hoffman in Saturday's 2-1 loss to Columbus without suffering a concussion. Dzingel will be held out of Tuesday's game nonetheless." It's Hoffman's shot, it's a bullet," coach Guy Boucher told reporters on Monday. "With the protection he had there, he was lucky, because if it was lower it probably would have been right in the middle of the neck and that wouldn't have been a good place." That's hockey. It happens and you hope it doesn't, but over the course of an entire year, there's definitely moments where you're scared, and that was one of them." The Senators recalled Filip Chlapik from their farm team in Belleville to take Dzingel's roster spot, but veteran Zack Smith is slated to step into his job on the team's top line with Hoffman and Matt Duchene. Craig Anderson is expected to tend goal for the Senators against the Panthers. In 25 career games versus Florida, Anderson has a 15-7-2 record with a 2.24 goals-against average and a .930 save percentage.

GAME RECAP
/ OTTAWA, Ontario Jared McCann had a goal and two assists to lead the Florida Panthers over the Senators 7-2 on Tuesday night as Ottawa captain Erik Karlsson sat out following the death of his son. The team announced the death of Karlsson's son before the game. Erik and Melinda Karlsson were married last year and announced in November they were expecting their first child in the spring. The team released a statement offering its ''collective thoughts and prayers'' and requested privacy for the family. Keith Yandle, Nick Bjugstad, Evgeni Dadonov, Jamie McGinn and Frank Vatrano each had a goal and an assist for Florida. Colton Sceviour had the other goal while James Reimer made 33 saves. Patrick Sieloff and Marian Gaborik scored for the Senators, who lost their second straight. Craig Anderson started in goal but was replaced by Mike Condon after allowing four goals on 17 shots. Condon made 19 saves. Florida had a 6-2 advantage after two periods. The Panthers led 2-1 after an opening frame that was broken into two parts as the final 2:10 was played after the ice was resurfaced and just before the start of the second. Both teams were sent to their dressing rooms at 17:50 as the ice crew worked to repair a broken pane of glass in the Senators' end. Before that, Sceviour gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead at 2:36 as he tipped a point shot past Anderson. Sieloff tied it at 12:48. His point shot hit the end boards, bounced back over the net and struck the crossbar before hitting Reimer in the back and going in. The goal was the second in two career games for Sieloff. He scored April 9, 2016 while with the Calgary Flames, the team who drafted him 42nd overall in 2012. NOTES: Ryan Dzingel didn't play for Ottawa while Alexander Petrovic, Connor Brickley, Radim Vrbata and Maxim Mamin were Florida's scratches. ... Panthers D Keith Yandle played in his 704th consecutive game, the longest current streak in the NHL. UP NEXTPanthers: Concluded a three-game trip in Columbus on Thursday night. GAME PREVIEW
Time: 7:30 PM EDT Venue: Amalie Arena, Tampa, FL, 33602 / TAMPA, Fla. -- On Saturday, the Tampa Bay Lightning were reminded that a short-handed team is still nothing to be taken lightly when they were soundly defeated 3-0 by the injury-depleted Boston Bruins. They face much the same challenge on Tuesday when the Toronto Maple Leafs come to town, trying to build momentum for the playoffs without several key players. Toronto (43-22-7) is in third place in the Atlantic, all but assured of a playoff spot with 12 games to play. But the Maple Leafs are still without star Auston Matthews, nearly back after a month out with a shoulder injury. They'll play Tuesday without center Leo Komarov and defenseman Nikita Zaitsev, and potentially goalie Frederik Andersen as well. The Maple Leafs have won four straight, scoring a combined 20 goals, but their next two are on the road against the top two teams in the NHL, with a game following Thursday at Nashville." A good test for us," Toronto coach Mike Babcock said Monday. "Obviously, we're going to have to get better. We know that. The urgency in our play has to be better if we're going to have success." Tampa Bay (49-19-4) still leads the Atlantic, though Boston lurks four points back with two games in hand, and Nashville now has the lead for the overall points in the NHL. The Lightning bounced back from a two-game losing streak with a 3-1 win Sunday over the Edmonton Oilers. That win saw a big step forward on special teams -- the Lightning went 5 of 5 in killing off Oilers power plays after giving up power-play goals in 11 of the previous 12 games. The penalty kill now ranks 26th in the league, a weakness big enough to help offset the NHL's No. 2 power play. Even the power play had struggled, going 4 of 24 in nine games before getting a key power play goal from Nikita Kucherov as the go-ahead goal Sunday. Kucherov continues to pace the league with 93 points, on 36 goals and 57 assists, and the league's top-scoring offense also has Steven Stamkos and Brayden Point with 27 goals each." Tonight, we won the special-teams battle, and we got a much-deserved win," said Stamkos, noting that the penalty-kill issues haven't been for a lack of effort but had remained a persistent struggle. If Tampa Bay was to stumble and be overtaken by Boston -- the teams play two more times in the final 10 games -- it could fall into an opening-round playoff against Toronto. The two teams have played close games this season -- Tampa Bay won 2-0 in January, Toronto won 4-3 in February, and the Lightning edged the Maple Leafs 4-3 in shootout later in February. Babcock said it's important not to look ahead in a challenging week, and just play the game directly in front of them." Some nights, the matchups are easier than others," Babcock said. "I can guarantee the next couple of nights they won't easy."

GAME RECAP
/ TAMPA, Fla. Alex Killorn broke a tie midway through the third period and the Tampa Bay Lightning scored the final four goals to rally past the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-3 on Tuesday night. Victor Hedman, Ryan McDonagh and Nikita Kucherov also scored as Tampa Bay reached 50 wins for the second time in franchise history. Yanni Gourde had two assists for the Atlantic Division leaders, who moved five points ahead of second-place Boston for the top spot in the Eastern Conference. Andrei Vasilevskiy made 27 saves and set a Lightning record with his 41st victory of the season. Killorn took a pass from rookie Tony Cirelli and fired in a shot from the slot at 9:14 of the third to put the Lightning ahead after they trailed 3-0 midway through the second period. James van Riemsdyk scored twice for Toronto, which fell to 28-2-2 when leading after two periods. Fredrik Andersen returned after missing two games with an upper-body injury and stopped 21 shots in the loss. The Lightning played the final two periods without forward Ryan Callahan, who exited at 16:04 of the first after getting tangled up along the boards with Toronto forward Josh Leivo. Callahan left the ice favoring his right arm and shoulder area. The Maple Leafs built a three-goal lead with the help of two from van Riemsdyk, the first at 15:06 of the first period during a delayed penalty call and his second 1:29 into the second while on a power play. Zach Hyman then took advantage of Tyler Johnson's turnover in the Tampa Bay end before beating Vasilevskiy with a wrist shot at 15:41. Hedman answered for Tampa Bay with his 13th of the season 59 seconds later to cut into the lead heading to the third period. The Lightning struck quickly in the third as McDonagh and Kucherov scored 2:08 apart to tie the score 3:32 in. NOTES: Tampa Bay activated LW Ondrej Palat off injured reserve after he missed 26 games with an ankle injury. ... It was the 600th career game for van Riemsdyk. ... GAME PREVIEW
Time: 8:00 PM EDT Venue: Bell MTS Place, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, R3C 5S5 / WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Here's something the Winnipeg Jets have never been able to say this late in a season -- they have the leading goal scorer in the NHL on their roster. Well, okay, tied for being the top sniper. Finnish phenom Patrik Laine scored his 42nd and 43rd goals of the campaign on Monday night in a 4-2 victory over the Dallas Stars, pulling him even with his boyhood hero, Alex Ovechkin of the Washington Capitals, who notched his 43rd earlier in the evening against the Philadelphia Flyers. Laine, 19, has the longest point streak by a teenager in NHL history at 15 games (18 goals and 26 points) and has been particularly lethal against the Stars, with 14 goals, including two hat-tricks, in nine career games." It's too bad that we're not playing against Dallas any more this season," Laine told The Winnipeg Sun. "I think I'm just pretty lucky against Dallas. I don't know why." The win solidified the Jets' position in second place in the Central Division with 96 points. But it wasn't all good news for the Jets on Monday. Defenseman Jacob Trouba, who had missed eight weeks with a high ankle sprain before returning to the lineup last week, didn't finish the game after colliding heavily with Stars captain Jamie Benn and possibly suffering a concussion. Trouba's legs buckled after he tried to get up and he had to be helped to the bench by defensemen Tyler Myers, Ben Chiarot and winger Joel Armia. Coach Paul Maurice told The Winnipeg Free Press that Trouba came to Bell MTS Place Tuesday morning feeling "pretty darn good" but that and a couple of bucks will get you a cup of coffee at Tim Hortons." That tells you nothing in these situations. We need to get a few days on him. Better to feel good than not, but it will take a few days before we fully understand the extent of it," Maurice said." He'll see the specialist (Monday) and they'll give us a good idea of where we're at. It's usually two or three days before you find out which direction it goes. Whether it's going to be longer term. Not always, but it's happened in the past." The Kings come to town on the heels of a 4-3 overtime victory against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday. Sniper Jeff Carter scored his second goal of the game with less than 34 seconds left in the extra period, ending a contest where the Kings had been up by two goals only to fall behind and then score in the dying seconds after pulling their goaltender." It was a roller-coaster game but for the most part we played really well," Carter said in a postgame interview. "We gave two (goals) back but we stuck with it. At this point in the year, two points is two points." The win moved the Kings up into a tie with the Anaheim Ducks for third place in the Pacific Division with 86 points but because they have more regulation wins, the Ducks are bumped down into one of the wild-card spots in the Western Conference. The Kings have been treading water all month -- winning one, losing one, winning one, losing one -- while in the midst of a dogfight with the Ducks, Calgary Flames, Dallas Stars and Colorado Avalanche.

GAME RECAP
/ WINNIPEG, Manitoba Kyle Connor scored his second goal of the game 1:37 into overtime to lift the Winnipeg Jets over the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 on Tuesday night despite losing Patrik Laine to a lower-body injury. Connor fired the winner past goalie Jack Campbell to help the Jets set a franchise record for wins at 44 (44-19-10). Winnipeg had 43 wins in 2014-15, and the Atlanta Thrashers hit the same mark in 2006-07 before the franchise relocated in 2011. Laine was helped down the tunnel to the dressing room about a minute and half into the second period. He wasn't putting any weight on his left foot after blocking a shot by Kings defenseman Alec Martinez that hit him in the lower leg. The injury halted the sophomore forward's 15-game point streak (18 goals, eight assists). That was the longest active streak in the NHL and a record for a teenager. Laine had also entered the game tied for the league goal-scoring lead with Washington's Alexander Ovechkin, but the Capitals star got his 44th of the season and two assists in a 4-3 win over Dallas. Connor scored his 26th goal of the season late in the second. It was Winnipeg's third straight victory. Dustin Brown scored his 23rd goal of the season for the Kings, who were coming off a 4-3 overtime win against Minnesota on Monday. The game featured a battle between backup goalies, each making their third career start. Rookie Eric Comrie stopped 16 shots for the Jets for his second career win. He had one start last season (a victory) and picked up a loss against Florida in December. Campbell made 36 saves for the Kings. The 26-year-old was a first-round pick of Dallas in 2010 (11th overall) and joined the Kings in 2016. His only win in six career games was last month in Las Vegas. Brown and Anze Kopitar played tic-tac-toe on a 2-on-1 to score the game's first goal at 8:42 of the second. The back-and-forth ended when Brown got the pass and easily flipped it into the open side behind Comrie. Winnipeg then had two power plays but couldn't beat Campbell despite some sustained pressure. Kings forward Jeff Carter missed an open part of the net while his team was short-handed. Connor tied it at 17:06 when he deflected Mark Scheifele's pass. Winnipeg held a 23-15 advantage in shots on goal after the middle frame. NOTES: Winnipeg won the season series 2-1. Kings: Visit Colorado on Thursday night. GAME PREVIEW
Time: 8:30 PM EDT Venue: United Center, Chicago, Ill., 60612 / CHICAGO -- The Colorado Avalanche will look to maintain a foothold in the top eight spots of the Western Conference playoff race when they visit the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday night at the United Center. Colorado (39-25-8) has won four of its past five games and is in position to claim a wild-card playoff berth with 10 games left in the regular season. The Avalanche are seeking their first postseason appearance since the 2013-14 season." We're not worried about anybody coming out flat or not bringing their best, which is nice," Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon said to the team's official website. "Everyone is very confident in each other. That's what makes for a very good team. Everyone really trusts each other on this team. We have a full group of guys committed to the same thing." For the past decade, such quotes have been common from Blackhawks players. But this season has been anything but common for Chicago (30-34-9), which will miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2007-08 season. The previous decade has included nine straight playoff appearances and three Stanley Cup championships. Despite the downturn, the Blackhawks insist they are determined to finish strong." A lot of guys this season have been humbled in a lot of ways with the way the season's going," Blackhawks right winger Patrick Kane said to the Chicago Sun-Times. "And for these young guys, they haven't really been around a winning culture yet. So it's important to try to keep that going, to try to keep winning games and get them to feel that feeling -- what it's like to win games in here and have that winning culture." I don't think that's anything we want to create in here, where losing is acceptable and it's OK if we lose a game because of the position we're in." Kane leads the Blackhawks with 69 points (25 goals, 44 assists) in 73 games. He needs one more point to reach 70 for the seventh time in his career and the third season in a row. Colorado is led by MacKinnon, who has 89 points (38 goals, 51 assists) in 64 games. The 22-year-old has set career highs in goals, assists and points and has garnered attention as a candidate for the Hart Trophy as the NHL's most valuable player." For me, if we get in the playoffs, he's the MVP," Avalanche coach Jared Bednar said. "I can't imagine there's another player that means more for their team and is doing more for their team than what Nate's doing for us. That's just the way I see it. I mean, he is the driving force to our offense." Avalanche goaltender Semyon Varlamov likely will make his 43rd start. He is 21-14-6 with a 2.73 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage. In 20 career games against Chicago, he is 11-6-2 with a 2.36 GAA and a .930 save percentage. The Blackhawks will counter with Jean-Francois Berube or Anton Forsberg in net. Berube is 2-4-1 with a 3.70 GAA and an .897 save percentage in 10 games. Forsberg is 9-15-3 with a 3.04 GAA and a .905 save percentage in 31 games.

GAME RECAP
/ CHICAGO Nathan MacKinnon had two assists, extending his point streak to a career high-tying 13 games, and the Colorado Avalanche beat the Chicago Blackhawks 5-1 on Tuesday night. Alexander Kerfoot scored twice and Semyon Varlamov made 44 saves as Colorado won for the fifth time in six games and improved to 8-1-3 in their last 12. Mikko Rantanen and Tyson Barrie each had a goal and an assist, and Erik Johnson added an empty-netter. The Avalanche (40-25-8) snapped a tie with Anaheim for the top spot in the Western Conference wild-card race and moved within two points of Minnesota for third place in the Central Division. Chicago (30-35-9) lost for the sixth time in seven games. Defenseman Brent Seabrook scored his fifth goal of the season for the Blackhawks, and Anton Forsberg made 35 stops in his first start since he was pulled in the first period of Thursday night's 6-2 loss at Winnipeg. The last-place Blackhawks were eliminated from postseason contention with the loss. They had made the playoffs in nine straight seasons, winning three Stanley Cups. Seabrook's power-play goal put Chicago in front with 4:15 left in the first period, but Colorado responded with three in the second. With Andreas Martinsen in the box for slashing, a wide-open Kerfoot jumped on a rebound and beat Forsberg from the slot at 2:07. Kerfoot snapped a 14-game drought with his 16th of the season. The Avalanche then grabbed a 2-1 lead on their next shot. MacKinnon drew Forsberg over to one side of the net before playing it across to Rantanen for the easy one-timer at 5:01. Rantanen extended his point streak to seven games. The 21-year-old forward is tied with MacKinnon for most points in the NHL in March with 20 apiece. Rantanen and MacKinnon each picked up an assist when Barrie scored from the high slot on another power play, making it 3-1 at 12:40. Barrie extended his career-best point streak to 11 games, the longest run for an Avalanche defenseman since the franchise moved to Colorado. Chicago had three more power-play chances in the third, but came up empty each time. Johnson scored from the other end of the ice at 18:04, and Kerfoot made it 5-1 when he beat Forsberg with 57 seconds remaining. NOTES: MacKinnon has 13 goals and 13 assists during his point streak. ... Blackhawks C Matthew Highmore was scratched after he went hard into the boards during the second period of Sunday night's loss to St. Louis. Time: 10:00 PM EDT Venue: T-Mobile Arena, Paradise, NV, 89119 / LAS VEGAS -- After four consecutive home losses and a very shaky first period that saw them give up 20 shots, the Vegas Golden Knights seemed to finally regain their form in Sunday afternoon's 4-0 shutout of the Calgary Flames. William Karlsson scored the first natural hat trick in team history with three goals in less than nine minutes in the second period and goalie Marc-Andre Fleury, yanked for the first time all season after allowing four goals on 11shots in an ugly 8-3 loss to New Jersey four days earlier, bounced back to stop 42 shots for his 48th career shutout and 401st career victory, tying Chris Osgood for 12th on the NHL all-time victories list. With red-hot San Jose still within striking distance, the Golden Knights will try to end their four-game homestand with a .500 record when they face the Vancouver Canucks on Tuesday night at T-Mobile Arena. Vegas (46-21-5, 97 points) still holds an eight-point lead over the Sharks (40-23-9, 89) in the Pacific Division but still must play San Jose two more times this season, including a nationally televised contest on Thursday night at SAP Center. So the Golden Knights can ill-afford a slipup at home against the Canucks (25-38-9, 59), who are battling the Arizona Coyotes to avoid finishing in the Pacific cellar and have already been officially eliminated from playoff contention." Just the bounce-back," Fleury said when asked what he was most proud of after picking up his fourth shutout of the season. "We had a few tough games prior to this one. We had a good talk the past couple of days, and I thought we played good, especially that second period when we came out flying and had a lot of good chances (scoring four times)." "We weren't happy the way we played over the last couple weeks," Vegas coach Gerard Gallant admitted. "We had some real good games in there. We had some games where I thought we played okay and lost. ... It was important for us to bounce back, for sure." Vegas, which has as many home wins (25) as Vancouver has overall, plays a Canucks squad that has lost six straight games since losing standout 21-year-old rookie forward Brock Boeser to a potential season-ending back injury. Boeser, who leads Vancouver with 29 goals and 55 points, was stretchered off the ice in a 4-3 overtime win over the New York Islanders on March 5th after he fell into an open gate at the players' bench trying to make a hit on Cal Clutterbuck, fracturing a bone in his lower back in the process. The Canucks have scored just six goals in the six games since Boeser's injury and were shut out in three consecutive games. A power-play goal by Nikolay Goldobin at the 10:12 mark of the first period in Saturday night's 5-3 home loss to San Jose snapped a scoreless streak that covered 222 minutes and 57 seconds and 118 shots. This is the third of four meetings between the two teams. Vegas won each of the two previous contests, 5-2 on Nov. 16 at Rogers Arena and 6-3 on Feb. 23 at T-Mobile Arena. The teams also meet on April 3 in Vancouver.

GAME RECAP
/ LAS VEGAS Jonathan Marchessault scored his 23rd goal of the season and the Vegas Golden Knights beat the Vancouver Canucks 4-1 on Tuesday night. Cody Eakin, Pierre-Edouard Bellemare and Tomas Tatar also scored for Vegas, which ranks second in the league with 245 goals. Marc-Andre Fleury played just one period but was credited with the victory after making seven saves while improving to 27-11-3. The 14-year-veteran took over sole possession of 12th place on the NHL's all-time wins list with 402. Malcolm Subban took over in net at the start of the second period, making his first appearance since Feb. 2, when he lost in Minnesota. It was unclear why Fleury exited the game, although he took a shot from Brandon Sutter off the mask midway through the first. Subban made 22 saves. Vancouver got a goal from Sutter, and Jacob Markstrom stopped 24 shots. Markstrom dropped to 18-26-6 after losing his fifth straight start. Markstrom has allowed 14 goals during his skid. Vancouver fell to 6-17-1 against teams from the Pacific Division. It came into the game with the league's fifth-best road power play at 21.9 percent but was 0 for 1 Tuesday. Vegas picked up its 26th home win, one more victory than Vancouver has the entire season overall. The Canucks have dropped seven straight since losing 21-year-old rookie Brock Boeser to a potential season-ending back injury. Boeser leads Vancouver with 29 goals and 55 points. The Canucks have scored just seven goals in the seven games since Boeser's injury and were shut out in three consecutive games. Marchessault brought a personal drought to an end, scoring four minutes into the game with his 23rd goal of the season to give Vegas a 1-0 lead. Less than a minute later, Golden Knights defenseman Shea Theodore skated around Vancouver's Alex Biega, and after Markstrom poked the puck into the air, Eakin batted it in to make it 2-0. Bellemare beat Markstrom with his sixth of the year just before the end of the first period when Ryan Reaves was aggressive in digging out the puck behind the goal. He slipped it to Tomas Nosek, who fed Bellemare in front. Tatar smacked home his own rebound, extending Vegas' lead to 4-0 with 5:39 left in the second. Sutter got his seventh goal of the season when he used a wrist shot to squeak the puck through Subban's legs. Red-hot San Jose, which is still within striking distance of the Golden Knights in the Pacific Division, hosted New Jersey on Tuesday, and hosts Vegas on Thursday in a critical showdown. The teams play twice during the final stretch of the regular season. NOTESVegas coach Gerard Gallant is one win away from his 200th career victory. ... The teams meet one more time, on April 3. Vegas has won the first three meetings by a combined final of 15-6. ... Former Golden Knights forward Brendan Leipsic has six points (2 goals, 4 assists) over the past 10 games as a Canuck. ... GAME PREVIEW
Time: 10:30 PM EDT Venue: SAP Center at San Jose, San Jose, CA, 95113 / After a late-season stumble and a first-round playoff exit in 2016-17, the San Jose Sharks are trying to ensure that history does not repeat itself. The Sharks look for their fifth straight win and eighth in 10 games when they meet the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night. San Jose (40-23-9) returns to SAP Center after a three-game sweep through western Canada capped by a 5-3 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday." That was a huge trip coming away with six points," defenseman Justin Braun said. With less than three weeks left in the regular season, the Sharks are in the second place in the Pacific Division. This game starts a three-game homestand that includes a matchup with the Vegas Golden Knights on Thursday. San Jose trails the first-year Golden Knights by eight points -- and at least one player thinks there is a chance to come away with a division title. Last season, the Sharks dropped six in a row in the final weeks of the regular season and were sent packing by the Edmonton Oilers in six games. Perhaps all of that is something Logan Couture remembers too well." We're in a good spot, but there's still 10 games, there's still 20 possible points for us to go and get," the winger told the league's official website. First, the Sharks go for a sweep of the season series with the Devils. Martin Jones posted the first of his four shutouts this season with 28 saves in a 3-0 win over the Devils on Oct. 20. While with San Jose, Jones is 1-1-0 with a 1.01 goals-against in two career starts against New Jersey at SAP Center. He made 26 stops in a 4-0 win in San Jose in the most recent matchup on Nov. 21, 2016. The Sharks have 37 goals in their last nine games, and the play of Evander Kane has helped fuel that surge. Since coming over from the Buffalo Sabres, Kane has five goals and five assists in nine games. The fourth overall pick in the 2009 draft posted his first career hat trick after collecting four goals in Friday's 7-4 win over the Calgary Flames. Kane is one of three Sharks to score five goals after the trade, joining Tomas Hertl and Timo Meier. Joe Pavelski leads San Jose with 12 points (three goals, nine assists) since Kane joined the club. Pavelski has five assists in a four-game streak and 14 points (six goals, eight assists) in 16 career games against New Jersey. Hertl is also red-hot with three straight multipoint games, totaling four goals and three assists. New Jersey (37-27-8) is fifth in the Atlantic Division and holds the second wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. With 10 games to go, the Devils are just seven points behind the first-place Washington Capitals. After taking the first three games of a six-game road trip, New Jersey dropped a 4-2 decision to Anaheim on Sunday. Kyle Palmieri notched his 20th goal and Patrick Maroon scored for the Devils, who were outshot 36-17." I think this is the time of year where it is the best time to play. You should be ready every night. No excuses," said Maroon, who has two goals and five assists in eight games since being picked up from the Edmonton Oilers last month. One player who has slowed down some for New Jersey is winger Taylor Hall. He has a goal and two assists in five games after a 26-game points streak in which he logged 18 goals and 20 assists. Hall has six goals and seven assists in 12 career games in San Jose. Goaltender Keith Kinkaid has started every game on the road trip, surrendering nine goals on 152 shots. He needs one win to reach 20 for the first time in his career and had the first road shutout of his career on March 10, 2016, against the Sharks. If Cory Schneider starts, he will be looking to snap an 0-8-2 slide. He's 4-3-0 with a 3.60 GAA all time in the Bay Area. Regardless of who starts, Devils coach John Hynes has only one thing on his mind." We've got to find a way to win it. We got to find a way to be way better than we were (Sunday), and it' not about what's gone on the trip or 'what if.' Let's just be here to win hockey games," he said.

GAME RECAP
/ SAN JOSE, Calif. Jannik Hansen scored his first goal of the season and fellow fourth-liners Eric Fehr and Barclay Goodrow also scored to help the San Jose Sharks win their season-high fifth straight game, 6-2 over the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday night. Logan Couture added his 30th goal of the season, and Joe Pavelski and Mikkel Boedker also scored to give the Sharks a four-point lead over third-place Los Angeles in the Pacific Division with one game in hand. Brent Burns added three assists and Martin Jones made 26 saves. The scoring barrage by San Jose spoiled Cory Schneider's return to net for the Devils. Schneider allowed four goals on 14 shots before getting pulled midway through the second period of his first start since March 8. Schneider has lost 11 starts in a row since his last win for the Devils on Dec. 27. Taylor Hall scored his 32nd goal of the season and Blake Coleman also scored for the Devils, who lead Florida by just one point in the race for the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference. The Panthers have two games in hand. After Hansen and Fehr scored in the first period, Goodrow chipped one in midway through the second period on a surprising night of scoring from the fourth line when he beat Schneider on a 2-on-1. Couture then scored 40 seconds later on San Jose's first shot against Keith Kinkaid for his third career 30-goal season. Boedker added San Jose's second power-play goal of the night late in the second and the rout was on. The Sharks got off to a fast start in their first game back from a 3-0 Canadian road trip, scoring three goals in the first period and killing 1:20 of a two-man advantage for New Jersey. The teams traded goals to start with Fehr beating Schneider over the shoulder from a bad angle and Hall answering when he stole a bouncing puck from Justin Braun and beat Jones with a quick shot. San Jose then scored twice in a span of less than three minutes to take the lead. Pavelski tipped in a shot from Kevin Labanc on the power play to give the Sharks the lead. Then after Jones denied Damon Severson from in close at one end, Dylan DeMelo sent a long pass that Hansen chased down and then beat Schneider on a breakaway for his first goal since March 30, 2017. NOTES: DeMelo has 10 assists this month. ... San Jose D Brenden Dillon has a five-game point streak. ... Devils F Miles Wood (upper body) was scratched and Jesper Bratt played in his place.
