GAME PREVIEW
Yankees, dominating AL Central, visit Tigers 14h ago• 2 min read The New York Yankees have enjoyed great success against the American League Central Division this season. They'll get two more chances to continue their dominance on Monday. The Yankees play a day-night doubleheader at Detroit's Comerica Park. They have a 10-1 record against Central Division teams, including their lone game against the Tigers. The Tigers will complete a season-high 12-game homestand with the makeup doubleheader. In the Yankees' only scheduled trip to Detroit in mid-April, two of the three games were washed out by rain.New York is 20 games over .500 and looking to extend its four-game winning streak."I think we do have a really good team," manager Aaron Boone said. "I also consider it very early in the season. A long way to go and a lot of things have to happen for us to be the kind of team we want to be. There's still a lot of areas where we can continue to improve." Ace Luis Severino will seek to stretch his personal winning streak to seven games in the first game. Severino has limited the opposition to three runs or less in each of his last nine starts. His outing against defending champion Houston on Wednesday was one of his most overpowering performances. He held the Astros to two runs on four hits and tied his season high with 11 strikeouts. In three career outings against Detroit, Severino is 2-1 with a 2.70 ERA.Domingo German (0-3, 5.45 ERA), the Yankees' other starter on Monday, will seek his first career victory. German was scheduled to start on Sunday in Baltimore but the game was postponed by rain. He has never faced the Tigers. He took the loss in his last start on Memorial Day, allowing three runs (two earned) and five hits in 5 2/3 innings to the Astros.Giancarlo Stanton broke out of a long-ball slump on Saturday with a two-run homer. He hadn't gone deep since May 19."Anyone can put a good game or two together," Stanton told MLB.com. "I need good weeks. Good months. But it's all right. You've got to stay positive and that's a good way to start it." Mike Fiers (4-3, 4.45 ERA) and Sandy Baez will start the doubleheader for Detroit, which saw its four-game winning streak snapped by Toronto 8-4 on Sunday.Fiers is winless in his last three outings, though he held the Los Angeles Angels to one run on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings on Wednesday.Fiers got pounded by the Yankees on April 13, when he surrendered six runs (five earned) on eight hits over 5 2/3 innings. Aaron Hicks homered twice off him, including an inside-the-park scamper. Fiers is 0-1 with a 6.20 ERA in four career starts against New York.Hicks has been hot lately as well. He's batting .340 with two home runs and eight RBIs over his past 13 games.Baez will make his major-league debut after being called up from Double-A Erie. Baez has made 10 starts this season and is 0-4 with a 3.90 ERA. His record is partially due to some tough luck, as he's given up two or fewer runs in half of his starts. The 24-year-old right-hander's last outing was his best this season, as he held Binghamton to two runs on two hits over seven innings on Tuesday.

GAME RECAP
Severino wins 7th straight as Yanks top Tigers 7-4 in opener4h ago• 4 min read DETROIT Aaron Boone's pitching strategy for the first game of Monday's doubleheader was simple.''We sent our ace out there for the first game and counted on him giving us a big performance,'' the New York Yankees manager said.Luis Severino did just that, striking out 10 over eight innings to win his seventh straight decision in a 7-4 victory that extended New York's winning streak to five games.''He threw 85 strikes in 112 pitches, which puts his percentage in the high 70s,'' Boone said. ''That's how he got through eight innings, which is huge for our bullpen.'' Austin Romine hit a three-run homer, and Gleyber Torres and Greg Bird also homered for the AL East-leading Yankees, who improved to a big league-best 38-17. New York is 21 games over .500 for just the second time since ending the 2012 season at 95-67; the Yankees were 91-70 last year before losing their regular-season finale. In the start of a doubleheader that made up rainouts on April 14 and 15, Severino (9-1) allowed two runs - one earned - and four hits while walking none. He is 7-0 in 10 starts since losing at Boston on April 10.''I've been able to execute all of my pitches almost every time out there this season,'' Severino said. ''Today, it took me a couple innings to get on top of my slider, but everything was good after that.'' Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild was impressed with Severino's ability to overcome early problems with his slider.''He's able to throw his changeup at two different speeds, so even when he doesn't have a great slider, he still has different offspeed looks for the hitters,'' Rothschild said. ''He's throwing some of them at 79 or 80 and others at 88 or 89, which makes it tough on hitters.'' Romine's home run was his fourth in 59 at-bats. New York's backup catcher is hitting .373 with 19 RBIs.''I'm so happy with way he's hitting,'' Severino said.Jonathan Holder allowed two unearned runs in the ninth, and Aroldis Chapman struck out Victor Martinez with a runner on second for his 14th save in 15 chances.''I would have rather not used Chapman in that one, but he told me he's ready for the second game,'' Boone said.New York is 15-1 against the AL Central since mid-September.Drew VerHagen (0-2) allowed seven runs, seven hits - including three homers - and two walks in 3 2/3 innings. Detroit has lost two in a row following a four-game winning streak.''I didn't get deep into the game, and I didn't give us a chance to win,'' VerHagen said after his first major-league start since August. ''There's not much to like about that game.'' Torres became the first Yankees player under 22 to hit 10 home runs in a season since Mickey Mantle from 1951-53.Miguel Cabrera hit an RBI double in the first, but Torres tied the game in the third when he became the fifth New York player to reach double digits in home runs this season; Jeimer Candelario leads the Tigers with nine.Bird led off the fourth with his second homer, Miguel Andujar and Clint Frazier had RBI singles and Romine hit his fourth homer for a 7-1 lead.''The bottom of our order has been great, and Ro has been a big part of that,'' Boone said. ''He's putting baseballs into places where our big guys hit them.'' Sandy Baez, a 24-year-old right-hander making his major league debut for the Tigers as their 26th man, pitched 4 1/3 hitless innings of relief.''We are proud of that young man,'' Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said. ''Eating up all those innings was huge in the first game of a doubleheader.'' Baez hit his first batter, Bird, then struck out Giancarlo Stanton.''I'm going to keep that ball wherever I go,'' Baez said. ''I'll have it when I'm driving and when I'm at home.'' SCHEDULINGBoone hopes there can be a schedule adjustment on July 8-9. New York is scheduled to play in Toronto at 8:05 p.m. on July 8, and last Thursday's rainout at Baltimore was rescheduled as part of a day-night doubleheader starting at 4:05 p.m. on July 9. ''Hopefully it is something that gets worked out,'' he said. ''But I also know it's way out of my hands and way out of my control.'' FLIGHT DELAYSThe Yankees were delayed briefly in Baltimore after a radar problem on their charter and arrived in Detroit at 8:30 p.m. Sunday. The Yankees activated RHP Adam Warren from the 10-day DL between games and optioned RHP Tommy Kahnle to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.Tigers: C John McCann sat out the first game after leaving Sunday's game with an intercostal strain. GAME PREVIEW
Royals, Angels open series in LA 6h ago• 2 min read The Kansas City Royals have played better lately, but they're still searching for improvements from their bullpen heading into a three-game series at the Los Angeles Angels on Monday night.Kansas City (21-38) came into Sunday ranked 28th of 30 major league teams with a 5.46 ERA from its relief corps. The bullpen then gave up two runs in 1 2/3 innings in a 5-1 loss to the visiting Oakland A's on Sunday."You're waiting for somebody to step up and take a role," Kansas City coach Ned Yost told reporters before the game. "Grab it. Take it. I'll gladly give it to you, but you've got to take it. I'm not going to hand it to you." Even with the loss on Sunday and a 16-0 blowout loss to the A's on Friday, the Royals are 7-5 since May 22.They'll look for left-hander Danny Duffy to build off his past two starts.Duffy (2-6, 5.71 ERA) was 1-6 with a 6.88 ERA after an 8-3 loss to the New York Yankees on May 19. It was the sixth time in seven starts he allowed at least five earned runs.Duffy, the Opening Day starter for the Royals, has bounced back with consecutive quality starts against the Texas Rangers and the Minnesota Twins. He allowed just one earned run and four hits in 7 2/3 innings on May 24 in Texas and the offense rewarded him in an 8-2 victory.Duffy came back Tuesday and gave up one earned run and four hits in six innings to visiting Minnesota. He was long gone by the time the Royals won 2-1 in 14 innings.Duffy is 2-1 in his career against the Angels with a 3.46 ERA. His last start against Los Angeles was April 17, 2017, when he allowed one run and three hits in seven innings of a 7-1 win in Kansas City. The Angels (32-28) will turn to right-hander Nick Tropeano, who has also strung together two good starts, both on the road. He also had success in Kansas City on April 12, his first major league appearance since undergoing Tommy John surgery in August 2016.Tropeano (3-3, 3.80) most recently allowed two runs and seven hits in 5 1/3 innings on Tuesday and came away with the victory in the Angels' 9-2 win. Five days earlier, he held the Toronto Blue Jays to one run and four hits in 7 1/3 innings of a 7-1 win by Los Angeles. He was even better against the Royals while helping the Angels to a franchise-best 13-3 start, blanking them for 6 2/3 innings in a 7-1 win.Tropeano told reporters after his last game that the team's potential to score a lot of runs is comforting."This is one of the most dangerous lineups in the league," he said. "It's going to be scary once everything clicks." Tropeano made one other appearance against the Royals in April 2016.

Trout helps lift Angels to 9-6 win over Royals5m ago• 2 min read ANAHEIM, Calif. Mike Trout had three hits, including a tiebreaking RBI single in the eighth inning, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 9-6 on Monday night.Trout scored three runs and drove in two, Justin Upton and Albert Pujols also had two RBIs, and Jefry Marte hit a solo home run to help the Angels improve to 4-0 against the Royals this season. Los Angeles has scored at least five runs in each of those wins.Tim Hill (1-2) couldn't handle the bouncing comeback up the middle from Trout, and the ball had enough on it to carry to center field and allow Maldonado to score for the 7-6 lead. Upton and Pujols each added run-scoring singles to add to the lead.Cam Bedrosian (2-1) pitched a perfect eighth to get the win. Blake Parker got the last three outs, striking out Jorge Soler with a runner on first for his fourth save and the Angels' third win in four games. After Soler's two-run double pushed the Royals' lead to 5-2 in the fifth, Upton homered for the second straight game to pull the Angels within two in the bottom of the inning.Marte added his third homer to start a three-run sixth. Trout drove in Shohei Ohtani, who hit a pinch-hit single, to tie the score 5-5. Pujols gave the Angels a 6-5 lead on a single that scored Trout for his 1,949th career RBI.However, Salvador Perez tied it with a solo home run to left-center in the seventh.Mike Moustakas, Alcides Escobar and Jon Jay each had an RBI for the Royals.TRAINER'S ROOMAngels: With Kole Calhoun (strained oblique) on the 10-day disabled list, manager Mike Scioscia said he is comfortable rotating between Chris Young, Michael Hermosillo and Kaleb Cowart in right field. ''We can mix-and-match a little bit, and just hopefully hold the fort down until Kole gets back,'' Scioscia said.UP NEXTRangers: RHP Brad Keller (1-1, 2.13 ERA) will make his first career road start Tuesday. Keller gave up one run in three innings of an 11-8 win over Minnesota in his first start on Wednesday, and the 22-year old has a 2.19 ERA in 11 relief appearances on the road this season.Angels: LHP Andrew Heaney (2-4, 3.66) has lost two of his last three starts, giving up five runs and eight hits in five innings of a 6-2 defeat at Detroit on Thursday.---More baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball

GAME PREVIEW
Braves open West Coast swing at Padres 2h ago• 2 min read SAN DIEGO -- All that stands between the San Diego Padres and their best homestand of the season are the Atlanta Braves. And while that looks like a formidable challenge on paper, given the fact that the Braves just won three of four from the Washington Nationals to reclaim first in the National League East, it's even a bigger hurdle when you consider the way the Braves handled the Padres last year. The Braves won five of seven games against the Padres. And it wasn't really that close. But the Braves flew across the country from Atlanta on Sunday night to open a six-game West Coast trip to San Diego and the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Padres, meanwhile, are 5-2 after seven games of a 10-game homestand leading into a stretch where they play 19 of 21 games on the road. The Padres' recent run improved their record at Petco Park this season to 14-19."We've played better on the road (11-14) than we have at home," Padres manager Andy Green said recently. "We need to play better at home against the better teams." The Padres' recent successes at Petco Park could be a little deceiving. They won back-to-back series against the only two teams with worse records in the National League than the Padres -- the Miami Marlins and the Cincinnati Reds. The Padres-Braves series opens Monday night with right-hander Julio Teheran (4-3, 4.03 ERA) starting for the Braves and left-hander Clayton Richard (3-6, 4.74) going for the Padres.Teheran will make his 13th start of the season. He has allowed 30 runs, 52 hits and 30 walks with 54 strikeouts in 67 innings.Teheran has had success against the Padres in the past. He is 4-2 against San Diego in his career with a 3.76 ERA in eight starts. He picked up a victory last year in Atlanta in his only outing against the Padres, giving up two runs, five hits and four walks with five strikeouts in six innings.Meanwhile, Richard's overall statistics this season are a bit misleading. Given the fact that the Braves are from the NL East could work to Richard's advantage Monday night.Richard has made 12 starts this season:--In his six starts against teams from outside the NL West, Richard has allowed 13 runs, 35 hits and six walks with 33 strikeouts in 44 innings -- posting a 2.66 ERA and 0.93 WHIP. The Padres are 3-3 in Richard's starts outside the division, and he is 2-2. Richard has given up one home run to teams outside the division.--However, in his six starts against NL West teams this season, Richard has given up 27 runs (26 earned), 37 hits and 19 walks with 28 strikeouts in 30 innings -- posting a 7.80 ERA and 1.87 WHIP. The Padres are 2-4 in Richard's starts inside the division and he is 1-4. He has given up eight homers to NL West teams. But Richard has had almost no luck during his career against the Braves. He is 0-6 with a 6.75 ERA in nine games (six starts). He has given up 26 runs (25 earned), 53 hits and 11 strikeouts with just 17 walks in 33 1/3 innings against Atlanta.

Spangenberg, Lopez lead Padres in 11-4 win against Braves9m ago• 2 min read SAN DIEGO Cory Spangenberg homered and tripled, Raffy Lopez had a homer among his career-high three hits and Eric Hosmer and Franmil Reyes also went deep to lead the San Diego Padres over the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves 11-4 on Monday night.Clayton Richard (4-6) pitched seven strong innings for the Padres, who have won six of seven and remain in last place in the NL West.Nine of the Padres' 13 hits were for extra bases. The Padres sent 11 batters to the plate in the fifth, scoring seven runs on a triple, four doubles, a single, two walks and a sacrifice fly. Spangenberg tripled in a run, Hosmer doubled in two and Travis Jankowski and Jose Pirela each had an RBI double. Lopez hit an RBI single and Freddy Galvis hit a sac fly.Braves starter Julio Teheran walked Pirela opening the fifth and then was visited for the second time in the game by the team trainer. He then came out with an undisclosed injury. Luiz Gohara came on and allowed six runs and six hits.Teheran (4-4) allowed four runs and five hits, walked three and struck out two.Teheran gave three homers. Hosmer went deep in the first, his seventh, and Spangenberg connected with one out in the second, his fourth. Lopez led off the fourth with his third.Reyes homered off Peter Moylan leading off the sixth, his fifth.Richard allowed three runs and six hits, struck out five and walked two. He gave up a two-run double to Charlie Culberson an RBI single to Ender Inciarte.OH WELLBraves first base coach Eric Young tried to throw a foul ball into the crowd in the third inning but didn't throw it hard enough to get it over the new extended netting at Petco Park. His second try came up short, too, so the smiling coach instead rolled it to a bat boy.UP NEXTBraves: LHP Sean Newcomb (6-1, 2.73) is scheduled to start Tuesday night. He beat San Diego 3-0 last year, allowing six hits in six innings while striking out eight.Padres: RHP Jordan Lyles (2-1, 3.65) is set to make his sixth start. It will be his most since making since making 10 with Colorado in 2015.---More baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball

GAME PREVIEW
Diamondbacks, Giants prepare for series opener, MLB draft 5h ago• 2 min read SAN FRANCISCO -- Two teams with more on their minds than just an early season baseball game begin a three-game series Monday night when the Arizona Diamondbacks visit the San Francisco Giants. Both teams are coming off 6-1 wins that completed three-game sweeps Sunday, the Diamondbacks over the Miami Marlins and the Giants over the Philadelphia Phillies. They will enter the series separated by 3 1/2 games atop the National League West, with the Giants (29-30) needing a sweep to catch the Diamondbacks (31-27) in the loss column. As both teams look ahead to a showdown between left-handers Patrick Corbin and Madison Bumgarner on Tuesday in the San Francisco ace's season debut, each will participate in the first day of the Major League Baseball draft before Monday's matchup.Befitting teams that finished 29 games apart last season -- San Francisco (64-98) had the worst record in the NL and Arizona (93-69) landed a wild-card playoff berth -- the Giants will pick early (No. 2) and the Diamondbacks late (No. 25) in the first round Monday.Interestingly, the Giants have been linked to Georgia Tech catcher Joey Bart, which could signal a possible move to first base by their current All-Star catcher, Buster Posey.Giants general manager Bobby Evans insisted he's not looking for a catcher, a pitcher ... anything in particular ... but just another great player."You can get a game-changing guy in any number of places, but your odds increase when you select as high, as we will," he said. "While the probability might change, even when not picking this high, your goal is still to get an impact player." For now, the Giants will stick with Posey, which isn't necessarily good news for Arizona's starter in Monday's series opener, Zack Godley (5-4, 4.38). Posey has gone 3-for-5 in his career against the 28-year-old.Godley held the Giants scoreless for seven innings in a 2-1 win in April. It was his first-ever appearance at AT&T Park. He's 2-1 overall in his career against the Giants with a 4.67 ERA in five games, including three starts.Giants starter Derek Holland (3-6, 4.94) will see a Diamondbacks offense that came to life during a 5-1 homestand. Those five wins all came against Cincinnati and Miami, which was considered a step in the right direction for a team that now figures to get a more serious test on the road."We didn't really have much farther down to go, so it was bound to get better," Diamondbacks star Paul Goldschmidt said of the winning homestand. "We have to keep it going. It's still really early in the year. There's a long way to go." Holland was the unlucky loser in the earlier matchup with Godley. He gave up a first-inning triple to Goldschmidt that scored one run and led to a second, the only runs he allowed in a six-inning stint. It was Holland's only career meeting with Arizona, leaving him with an 0-1 record and a 3.00 ERA.The hottest Diamondbacks hitter entering the series is David Peralta, who homered in each of the club's three wins over the Marlins the last three days.

GAME RECAP
Giants beat Diamondbacks 10-3 to get back to .5006m ago• 2 min read SAN FRANCISCO Andrew McCutchen and Brandon Crawford opened a seven-run fourth inning with back-to-back home runs, and the San Francisco Giants got back to .500 on the season by beating the first-place Arizona Diamondbacks 10-3 on Monday night.Pinch-hitter Alen Hanson and Buster Posey each added two-run doubles in the big inning to help the Giants win their fifth straight game to move within 1 1/2 games of the Diamondbacks in the NL West.San Francisco gets a big boost Tuesday with ace Madison Bumgarner's return. Bumgarner is set to make his season debut after breaking the pinkie on his throwing hand at the end of spring training. The Giants managed to stay in striking distance in the division in 60 games without the 2014 World Series MVP and are hoping his return can keep them in contention.Pablo Sandoval and Nick Hundley also homered for the Giants.Pierce Johnson (3-2) pitched two scoreless innings to get the win after manager Bruce Bochy's decision to pull starter Derek Holland after just four innings paid off. With the game tied at 2, Bochy opted to pinch hit for Holland with the bases loaded and one out in the fourth. Hanson made his manager look good when he slapped a double down the third-base line against Zack Godley (5-5) to give the Giants a 4-2 lead.Reliever Fernando Salas allowed another run to score on a wild pitch, and then Posey's hit made it 7-2, with all seven runs charged to Godley.Holland struck out the first four batters he faced but ran into trouble in the fourth when Ketel Marte hit a two-run double to open the scoring. Marte has eight extra-base hits and eight RBIs in his past seven games.TRAINER'S ROOMDiamondbacks RHP Shelby Miller (elbow) made his second rehab start, allowing one run, four hits and four walks in 4 2/3 innings for Double-A Jackson. He struck out six and threw 79 pitches. ... OF A. J. Pollock had a CT scan on his injured thumb. The injury is healing but not enough to remove the soft cast.MOMENT OF SILENCEThe Giants held a moment for silence for former San Francisco 49ers receiver Dwight Clark, who died Monday at age 61 after a battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, otherwise known as Lou Gehrig's disease. Bochy recalled playing a golf tournament at Pebble Beach with Clark and said they had talked about Clark visiting the Giants before he was diagnosed with ALS.''I know he's going to be sorely missed,'' Bochy said. ''If you ever were around Dwight you had fun. He just enjoyed life and had a passion for it. It's a sad day today.'' UP NEXTBumgarner struck out 15 in 8 1/3 innings of two minor league outings. Bochy said he can probably throw about 90 pitches against the Diamondbacks in his first start of the season. Patrick Corbin (5-2) starts for Arizona.---More baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball

GAME PREVIEW
Time: 8:00 PM EDT Venue: Capital One Arena, Washington, D. C., 20004 / WASHINGTON -- The Vegas Golden Knights' storybook inaugural season is teetering on the brink. Given all they have accomplished thus far, they see no reason to panic. Trailing 2-1 in the Stanley Cup Finals, the Golden Knights must find a way to solve the Washington Capitals' defense in Game 4 Monday night at Capital One Arena." It's been said all year," forward James Neal told the Las Vegas Sun. "We know what we have in this room and we stick together. We got each other, we'll pick each other up, focus on the next one. We'll have our best game of the year and tie it up." The Golden Knights rallied from a 1-0 deficit in the Western Conference Finals to win four straight games. They have lost consecutive games for the first time in the playoffs and showed no signs of solving Washington's smothering defense during Saturday's 3-1 Game 3 loss. Vegas was limited to 22 shots on goal, its second lowest total in the playoffs. The Golden Knights attempted 62 shots. Braden Holtby made 21 saves and his teammates blocked 26 shots." Offensive teams have certain tendencies, certain routes that they take through the neutral zone, plays they like to make," Capitals defenseman Matt Niskanen told NHL.com. "So if you can be on top of them, turn over some pucks, stifle them, make it hard for them to gain entry with possession, that frustrates skilled players." The Knights have managed just three goals in the last two games. Washington's forecheck has disrupted the Vegas offense and forced turnovers like the one that led to Devante Smith-Pelly's goal game-clinching tally on Saturday. Washington has also been quick to turn broken Vegas plays into rushes." I think we can hang onto pucks more instead of putting it in the slot blindly," David Perron told NHL.com. "I think our line's been guilty, for sure, of throwing some pucks in the slot that don't result in anything other than transition for their team." The Capitals, playing their first home Finals game since Detroit completed a sweep in 1998, improved to 11-4 in the playoffs when scoring first as Alex Ovechkin's goal made it 1-0. It was his 14th of the playoffs and tied John Druce's 28-year-old franchise record. Center Evgeny Kuznetsov, who left Game 2 with an upper body injury, did return for Game 3 and provided a goal and an assist. In the first Stanley Cup Final of his storied career, Ovechkin is playing complete hockey: scoring goals, blocking shots and fighting for loose pucks." It's the Stanley Cup final," Ovechkin told the Washington Post. "What do you want to do? It's all in for everybody." Added defenseman John Carlson: "He's as engaged as anyone could ever be, I think. It shows in his game. And it shows in the effect it has on the rest of us." It is up to Vegas coach Gerard Gallant to find a way to stop Ovechkin and Co. and generate more good chances against Holtby." In the three games, we haven't been good enough," Gallant told NHL.com on Sunday. "If we don't step up our game, the same result's going to happen tomorrow night. So, we'll see what we're made of."

GAME RECAP
/ WASHINGTON The Washington Capitals are one win away from the first championship in their 43-year history after routing the Vegas Golden Knights 6-2 on Monday night to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the Stanley Cup Final. T. J. Oshie, Tom Wilson and Devante Smith-Pelly all scored in the first period to get the Capitals rolling against a determined Vegas team that had no answers early against Braden Holtby, who stopped 28 shots in another strong showing. The desperate Golden Knights outchanced the Capitals by a wide margin but fell apart after James Neal clanked a shot off the post instead of hitting a wide-open net early, and the expansion team's Cinderella run could be over in a matter of days. Evgeny Kuznetsov dished out four assists and John Carlson, Michal Kempny and Brett Connolly also scored as thunderous chants of ''We want the Cup! We want the Cup!'' rang out from the crowd. Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals will get their first chance to hoist the Cup in Game 5 on Thursday night back in Las Vegas. No team since the Detroit Red Wings in 1942 has blown a 3-1 lead in the Cup Final. The Capitals seem to be getting enough bounces to make up for nine previous first- or second-round playoff exits in the Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom era - and plenty more disappointments in the previous decades, too. While Vegas rang several shots off the posts, the Capitals seized just about every opportunity as they have throughout this surprising run. Kuznetsov padded his lead as the playoffs' leading scorer with primary assists on Oshie's power-play goal that made it 1-0 and Wilson's that doubled the lead. Smith-Pelly, who scored the insurance goal to ice Game 3, kicked the puck from his left skate to his stick and roofed a shot on Marc-Andre Fleury with 20.5 seconds left in the first period. Fleury came into the final as the Conn Smythe front-runner for playoff MVP honors but looked human again by allowing six goals on 23 shots at a defense that has often left him vulnerable. Kuznetsov leads all playoff scorers with 31 points, Ovechkin is tied for the goal lead with 14 and Holtby showed again Monday his ability to alter the course of a game. Holtby got some good fortune from the post on shots by Alex Tuch, Neal and Brayden McNabb. But he also made a handful of big saves early when the Golden Knights came out with a furious approach. By the time Vegas got third-period goals from Neal and Reilly Smith it was too late.---More Stanley Cup coverage: https://apnews.com/tag/StanleyCupFinals---Follow Hockey Writer Stephen Whyno on Twitter at http://twitter.com/SWhyno
