GAME PREVIEW
Red Sox have Price armed to finish sweep of RaysFLMStarting pitchers Eduardo Rodriguez and Chris Sale have given the Boston Red Sox two great outings in Tampa Bay this week. Now it's former Rays pitcher David Price's turn.Price (7-3, 3.61 ERA) will be on the mound as Boston attempts to sweep the three-game series from the Rays on Wednesday. The series finale will be a matinee in St. Petersburg, Fla.Price is 1-1 with a 2.65 ERA in three starts against his former club this season, including a pair of 10-strikeout performances. In his career, the 2012 Cy Young Award winner has made 17 appearances (16 starts) against the Rays and is 6-5 with a 3.16 ERA. He will be looking to maintain the momentum established Monday by Rodriguez and Tuesday by Sale.During a mound visit in the sixth inning Tuesday, Sale talked manager Alex Cora into leaving him in the game with two outs and a runner on first.Cora yielded, and Sale induced Guillermo Heredia to line out to shortstop Xander Bogaerts to end the inning. When the Red Sox scored in the top of the seventh, Sale wound up the pitcher of record, and he got the win as Boston held on for a 5-4 victory.Reliever Marcus Walden was called on to close out the game, earning his second save in five chances, despite walking the first batter he faced to force in a run. Walden said Sale deserved the chance to get out of the sixth inning, which he did with his 116th pitch."I got up for the sixth," Walden said. "Sale wanted to go back out. You've got to give that man the ball." In the other dugout, Tampa Bay manager Kevin Cash isn't encouraged by anything he sees from his club right now -- whether it's at the plate or on the mound.Down 5-2 in the ninth inning, the Rays mounted a rally against reliever Brandon Workman, loading the bases and scoring a run to make it 5-3 and ending the night for Workman.Walden came in and walked Tommy Pham to make it 5-4, but he induced a grounder to first from Austin Meadows for the final out.Stranding the tying run at third base to end the game didn't thrill Cash, who said he wasn't encouraged at all by the two runs in the ninth."If you'd have asked me that two weeks ago, I'd have probably been more encouraged, but ... nah, I want to win the game. We need to win, so get the big hit, make the big pitch. We're just not doing it right now," Cash said."So no, there's not much encouragement right now." Travis d'Arnaud continued his torrid pace at the plate with his 11th home run of the season, a two-run shot off Sale that hooked around the left field foul pole in the third inning. The former New York Mets and Los Angeles Dodgers first baseman/catcher has 11 home runs and 30 RBIs since June 6.D'Arnaud has driven in 12 of the Rays' 26 runs over their past nine games.All-Star pitcher Charlie Morton (11-3, 2.61 ERA) will get the nod Wednesday. He is 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA in 12 innings over two starts this season against Boston. The right-hander has made six career starts against the American League East rival, going 4-1 with a 4.13 ERA.Tampa Bay is 13-8 in contests Morton has started.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Rays beat Red Sox 3-2 as Boston files protest over lineupST. PETERSBURG, Fla. Charlie Morton struck out 11 over seven innings and the Tampa Bay Rays avoided a three-game sweep by beating David Price and Boston 3-2 in a game that the Red Sox protested on Wednesday.Confusion reigned in the top of the eighth when a series of defensive changes involving reliever Adam Kolarek prompted Boston manager Alex Cora to protest the game due to the placement of subs into the Rays lineup after the designated hitter was removed.Kolarek replaced Morton and retired pinch-hitter Sam Travis on a pop fly. The left-hander then shifted to first base when Rays manager Kevin Cash brought in reliever Chaz Roe, who got a fly ball from Mookie Betts. After Kolarek then returned to the mound and Nate Lowe entered to play first base, Cora met with the umpires, which prompted around a 15-minute stoppage as the umpires discussed the matter. After the protest was made and the game resumed, Kolarek got a first-pitch grounder from Rafael Devers. An unhappy Cora again talked with the umpires after the third out, which delayed the start of the bottom on the eighth.Morton (12-3) allowed two runs and five hits in lowering his AL-best ERA from 2.61 to 2.60. Emilio Pagan pitched the ninth for his seventh save.Price (7-4) went six innings, giving up three runs, four hits and two walks while striking out eight. The Red Sox slipped back into third place in the AL East as they face the Yankees in a pair of key four-game series on consecutive weekends.Tampa Bay took a 3-2 lead in the fifth when left-handed hitting Joey Wendle, who got the start at shortstop in place of slumping Willy Adames, lined an RBI single to center off Price and scored on Guillermo Heredia's double.Tommy Pham got the Rays' first hit on a homer leading off the fourth.Devers put the Red Sox up 2-0 with a well-placed opposite-field single in the third. He has 29 RBIs this month.Brock Holt flared a single to left and went to third on Betts' double. Both scored when Devers beat an infield-in shift by slapping his hit through the vacated shortstop position.Morton retired 14 of his final 15 batters after Devers' single.TRAINER'S ROOMRays: Cash said CF Kevin Kiermaier (sprained left thumb) will need a short minor league rehab assignment before returning. The defensive standout, hurt last Saturday diving head-first into first base on an infield single, is hopeful of being back in the next couple of weeks. ... Reliever Jose Alvarado (right oblique strain) expects to have his first bullpen session next weekUP NEXTRed Sox: RHP Rick Porcello (8-7, 5.61 ERA) and Yankees RHP Masahiro Tanaka (7-5, 4.00 ERA) are Thursday night's scheduled starters in the first of four games in Boston. It's the first game between the teams at Fenway Park this year.Rays: Start a three-game series Friday night at Toronto.---More MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Rockies-Nationals PreviewAPErick Fedde has bounced around between the majors and minors and has also been a starter and reliever this year. However, he is scheduled to start for the Washington Nationals in the first game in a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday against the Colorado Rockies. The opener is a makeup from a rainout Monday night. The Nationals could have used a pitcher from the minors as the 26th man to start the first game, with Patrick Corbin (7-5, 3.40 ERA) going in Game 2."We looked at it," Washington manager Dave Martinez said before his team's 11-1 rout of the Rockies on Tuesday. "We wanted Fedde to pitch. That is why we are starting him." The Rockies will go with Jon Gray (9-7, 4.11 ERA) in the first game and Kyle Freeland (2-7, 7.62) in the second contest. Why use Fedde (1-1, 3.50) in the first game?"Just keeping Corbin on schedule," Martinez said of using the lefty in the nightcap. The Nationals hope that Max Scherzer (inflamed bursa sac below right scapula) can come off the injured list and pitch the series finale Thursday.Fedde is 0-2 with a 12.38 ERA in two career starts against the Rockies. Gray is an equally unimpressive 0-3, 8.20 in four starts against Washington.Washington recalled Fedde from Double-A Harrisburg on July 17 for a start against the Orioles at Baltimore. The right-hander turned in his best outing of the season: six innings of one-run, five-hit ball during a no-decision in a game that the Orioles won 9-2.Corbin has a history with the Rockies, mostly from his days with the Arizona Diamondbacks, producing a 9-4 record with a 4.73 ERA in 22 games (21 starts). This year, his first with the Nationals, the left-hander beat the Rockies on April 23 in Denver. He gave up three runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk with six strikeouts in six innings.Gray last pitched on July 17 against the visiting San Francisco Giants. In 5 1/3 innings, he gave up a season-high 11 hits, including two homers, and a season-high six runs in an 11-8 loss.Freeland will make his third start since being recalled from a demotion Triple-A Albuquerque. In both outings since his return -- July 13 vs. the Cincinnati Reds and Friday at the New York Yankees -- he lasted just four innings and gave up five runs.He is 2-0 with a 3.45 ERA in three career starts against the Nationals. Before Tuesday's game, the Rockies promoted Yonder Alonso from Triple-A Albuquerque. Alonso was with the Cleveland Indians last year, then was traded to the Chicago White Sox in December. The White Sox released him earlier this month after he hit .178 with seven homers in 67 games, and he subsequently landed a minor league deal with the Rockies."When we signed him, the hope was he could bounce back a little bit from the rough go he had this season and see if there's something that in the next couple of months he can help win games," Colorado manager Bud Black said of Alonso. He began proving his worth Tuesday night when his pinch-hit double in the ninth knocked in the Rockies' only run.In the series opener Tuesday, Washington's Trea Turner hit for the cycle for the second time in his career against the Rockies, and Stephen Strasburg won his sixth straight start with six scoreless innings."We just couldn't get a hit with a man on second; one of the better breaking balls I've seen him have," Black said of Strasburg.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Rendon's shot lifts Nats over Rockies in doubleheader openerWASHINGTON The Nationals dug a daunting hole for themselves in the first 50 games of the season. Fifty games later, they're right where they expected to be - in contention for a playoff berth.Adam Eaton and Anthony Rendon homered, and the Nationals beat the Colorado Rockies 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader Wednesday to improve to 35-15 since a 19-31 start. They've been the best team in the majors since May 24.''A lot of people wrote us off and saying we need to make moves already, we need to do this, we need to do that,'' said Rendon, whose team has won 22 of its last 31 home games. ''You don't win the division, you don't win the pennant, whatever you want to call it, in the first 50 games of the season. Or the first 100 games of the season. Anything can happen.'' The matinee was a makeup of Monday's postponement. Wednesday's originally scheduled game will be played as the back end of a day-night doubleheader.Rendon smacked the first pitch from reliever Carlos Estevez (1-1) just over the wall in left-center for his 21st home run to open the seventh, a shot that was reviewed and upheld.''When you watch him hit, he gets ready to hit,'' Nationals manager Dave Martinez said. ''On every pitch, he looks like he's ready. He might be fooled with a slider, but he gives himself a chance to take a good swing on every pitch. No different today.'' Wander Suero (3-5) worked a scoreless seventh, Fernando Rodney escaped a two-on, one-out jam in the eighth and Sean Doolittle closed it out for his 22nd save in 26 tries.Colorado has dropped eight of nine and 15 of 18 to slide seven games under .500 for the first time since April 15.''You want to get and stay in contention, because that's our expectation, and right now it's not happening, so it's frustrating,'' manager Bud Black said. ''I think the best word is frustrating, but it's not going to take the fight out of this group.'' Ryan McMahon gave Colorado a 1-0 lead with a sacrifice fly off starter Erick Fedde in the fourth and added an RBI single in the sixth. Fedde gave up a run and three hits while striking out two in four innings.Rockies starter Jon Gray left after four innings, departing because of the effects of a right calf injury suffered when Brian Dozier's line drive hit his leg in the second. Washington pushed across its only run against Gray on Gerardo Parra's bases-loaded walk in the fourth.Eaton opened the fifth with a first-pitch homer to right off Chad Bettis.Left-hander Kyle Freeland (2-7, 7.62 ERA) will start the nightcap for Colorado, while Washington will counter with lefty Patrick Corbin (7-5, 3.40).TRAINER'S ROOMRockies: RHP Yency Almonte, who is 0-0 with a 4.02 ERA in 10 appearances, was added as Colorado's 26th man for the doubleheader.Nationals: Washington summoned INF Adrian Sanchez as its 26th man. Sanchez is hitting .200 (4 for 20) in 18 games with the Nationals this season. . Between games, Washington optioned Fedde to Double-A Harrisburg and recalled C Raudy Read from Triple-A Fresno.GRAY'S BLUESGray's injury limited him to his shortest outing of the season, and his five walks were a season high.''I was OK for a second,'' Gray said. ''I had some adrenaline going and pitched OK the next inning. But it got really stiff and I'm pretty sure it was evident. You could probably see I was missing pretty bad glove side.'' X-rays were negative on Gray, and he said he anticipates making his next start.ROOM TO SPREAD OUTWashington announced an attendance of 14,628, the smallest crowd to watch a Nationals home game since 14,520 saw the Nationals beat Houston on April 18, 2012.UP NEXTRockies: RHP Jeff Hoffman (1-3, 6.75 ERA), who was called up from Triple-A Albuquerque on Sunday, makes his first start for Colorado since June 20 as the four-game series concludes.Nationals: RHP Max Scherzer (9-5, 2.30) is scheduled to come off the injured list and make his first start since July 6.---More MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Tired Tigers hope to rebound after getting fill of PhillyFLMThere haven't been too many pleasant surprises this season for the Detroit Tigers.Second baseman Harold Castro has been one of the rare exceptions. Filling in for injured Josh Harrison, Castro has hit .295 in 43 games this season after spending most of the spring with Triple-A Toledo. He'll likely be in the lineup again on Wednesday afternoon when the Tigers close out a two-game home series with Philadelphia.Castro, 25, isn't considered a big-time prospect, but manager Ron Gardenhire believes he can at least be a versatile backup."I liked him in spring training. I always said the kid's got a great set of hands and he can hit," Gardenhire said to MLive.com. "He can play multiple positions. He's proven it up here." Castro hit .328 with four homers in 134 at-bats with the Mud Hens. He can play any position on the infield or outfield, which could keep him in the majors for years."You've got to keep working, you've got to create those opportunities to play in the bigs or play everyday in the lineup," Castro told MLive. "And that's what I do every time." Both teams will have to deal with fatigue. The opener ended after midnight, going 15 innings before the Phillies emerged with a 3-2 victory. Castro scored both Tigers' runs.Detroit's starter on Wednesday, right-hander Jordan Zimmermann, will seek his first win since September. Zimmermann (0-7, 7.51 ERA) has been brutal in his last three outings, only remaining in the rotation due to a lack of options for Gardenhire.Zimmermann has given up 20 earned runs on 28 hits in 11 innings during that stretch.Philadelphia is a familiar foe for Zimmermann, who pitched seven seasons for the Washington Nationals before joining Detroit in 2016. He has faced the Phillies 16 times, going 6-8 with a 4.17 ERA.Philadelphia's starter in the matinee, right-hander Vince Velasquez, has shuttled between the rotation and bullpen this season. He'll be making his 12th start.Velasquez (2-5, 4.87 ERA) hasn't taken the mound since July 16, when he gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits in 4 2/3 innings against the Los Angeles Dodgers.Velasquez was charged with the loss against Detroit in an early season start at Philadelphia when he gave up three runs on six hits in 3 2/3 innings. Tigers utility man Niko Goodrum tagged him for a two-run homer. In two career outings against the Tigers, he's 0-1 with a 7.04 ERA.Velasquez's continued presence in the rotation is contingent on what the Phillies do before the trade deadline. Unless the Atlanta Braves falter, their chances of winning the division are slim. However, they are in contention for a wild-card berth.Phillies general manager Matt Klentak told MLB.com and other reporters that he's in a buy mode but probably won't make any major trades."We're going to continue to push. We're going to continue to try," he said. "We wouldn't have made the moves that we've made in recent days if we weren't doing that. But as I have said to you before -- and I know 1/8manager Gabe Kapler 3/8 has said this before -- for this team to get where we want to go, the core players on this team need to perform well. ... We have the talent on the field to do that. Whether we get hot and pull that off in the next two months remains to be seen." --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Velasquez sharp as Phillies blank Tigers 4-0DETROIT The Philadelphia Phillies picked a fine time to rest Bryce Harper.Vince Velasquez pitched impressively into the sixth inning and the Phillies beat the Detroit Tigers 4-0 Wednesday to finish a quick two-game sweep. Harper sat out, but Philadelphia didn't need much offense.''This felt kind of like a double win, mainly because we were able to rest Harper,'' Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said. ''Also huge to get J. T. (Realmuto) off his feet.'' Realmuto played first base instead of catcher, and he homered in the fourth inning to open the scoring. Nick Williams also went deep for Philadelphia, which has won five of six heading into a matchup with NL East-leading Atlanta.''This is definitely a big series coming up,'' catcher Andrew Knapp said. ''We're rolling. We're pretty confident in the way we're playing right now.'' The Phillies won the series opener at Detroit 3-2 in 15 innings in a game that ended early Wednesday, shortly after midnight. The teams returned to the field for an afternoon game, and Velasquez (3-5) outdueled Jordan Zimmermann.Velasquez allowed four hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. He struck out nine.Zimmermann (0-8) allowed four runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. Detroit is 8-35 since the start of June.Realmuto opened the scoring in the fourth with a solo shot, his 12th homer of the season. Then Philadelphia added three more runs the following inning.Williams opened the fifth with a homer, and Cesar Hernandez added an RBI double. Rhys Hoskins hit a run-scoring single to make it 4-0, chasing Zimmermann.Velasquez was in a jam in the second but struck out Gordon Beckham with the bases loaded to end the inning. He left in the sixth with two on and two out. Ranger Suarez, the first of three Philadelphia relievers, struck out Christin Stewart to end that threat.''We never really got anything going offensively,'' Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire said. ''Some of that is their pitching - you have to give their guy credit - but we weren't doing anything. Maybe some of it was mental fatigue but we were chasing a lot of balls outside the zone.'' DRY SPELLZimmermann has made 13 starts this season. That's the most of any major league pitcher without a victory - with the exception of Tampa Bay's Ryne Stanek, who has made 27 starts as an opener, a role that rarely leads to a victory for the pitcher.Zimmermann, on the other hand, has simply been ineffective. The game Wednesday increased his ERA to 7.57.''I thought I was really in command for four innings and then boom, boom, boom, I'm out of the game,'' Zimmermann said. ''The slider to Realmuto was a well-executed pitch, but I didn't get it done in the fifth.'' BREATHERThis was the first game Harper has missed this season. He played in a career-high 159 last year with Washington.TRAINER'S ROOMPhillies: Philadelphia put IF-OF Brad Miller on the 10-day injured list with a right hip flexor strain.Tigers: Detroit put RHP Victor Alcantara on the 10-day IL, retroactive to Sunday, with a right middle finger contusion. ... The Tigers moved C Grayson Greiner (low back strain) to the 60-day IL.UP NEXTPhillies: Philadelphia has an off day Thursday before beginning its three-game home series against Atlanta. Jake Arrieta (8-7) is slated to start the opener for the Phillies.Tigers: Detroit begins a four-game series at Seattle on Thursday night. The Tigers plan to call up Drew VerHagen (1-0) from Triple-A Toledo to make that start. LHP Daniel Stumpf was optioned to Toledo after Wednesday's game.---Follow Noah Trister at https://www. Extra-inning win boosts A's entering finale in HoustonFLMOakland right-handed reliever Yusmeiro Petit delivered the sort of performance Tuesday that might yield benefits beyond the immediate result of the Athletics' 4-3, 11-inning win over the host Houston Astros. With closer Liam Hendriks unavailable, Oakland manager Bob Melvin rode Petit for two critical frames during extra innings. Petit worked around a Marcus Semien error in the 10th inning before returning for the 11th and retiring the side in order to seal the victory, squaring the three-game series ahead of a rubber match on Wednesday.By pitching so effectively in a high-leverage situation, Petit not only enabled the Athletics to survive without their All-Star closer, but he also allowed Melvin to preserve two other high-leverage relievers -- right-handers Blake Treinen and Lou Trivino -- to keep them fresh in the event they are needed in the series finale. The Athletics can cut the deficit in the American League West to five games in the loss column should they saddle the Astros with a second consecutive defeat."He's got ice in his veins," Melvin said of Petit. "It's a difficult decision with Treinen and Trivino down there, but he looked like he was locating really well and knew where his pitches were going, and nothing really bothers him. It was a great outing, probably the best of the year for him with the consequences." Right-hander Chris Bassitt (7-4, 3.96 ERA) will start Wednesday for the Athletics. He has pitched to a 5.14 ERA over his past 11 starts after going 2-1 with a 1.93 ERA over his first five.Bassitt is 1-0 with a 3.27 ERA over four career appearances (three starts) against the Astros, including a no-decision in his lone start against Houston this season. He surrendered three runs on six hits and one walk over six innings in Oakland's 6-4, 12-inning defeat on June 2.All-Star right-hander Justin Verlander (12-4, 2.99 ERA) will start the series finale for Houston. He is 13-6 with a 2.63 ERA over 21 career starts against Oakland.Verlander allowed one run on four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over eight innings in a 5-1 win at Oakland on June 1. He allowed a solo home run (to right fielder Stephen Piscotty, currently on the 10-day injured list due to a sprained right knee) in that outing and has surrendered 28 homers this season, two shy of his career high of 30 allowed in 2016.The 36-year-old veteran, who also allowed 28 homers in 2018, has posted only three starts this year in which he did not surrender a home run. Two of those appearances came away from Minute Maid Park. The gopher ball played a role in the Astros blowing a 2-0 lead in the ninth inning Tuesday, with closer Roberto Osuna allowing a three-run home run to Athletics first baseman Matt Olson after Houston starter Wade Miley carried a shutout into the ninth.Miley, who had not pitched beyond the seventh inning in his previous 20 starts this season, had thrown 98 pitches and was set to face the top of the Oakland order for the fourth time. He allowed the first two batters of the inning to reach base safely before being lifted for Osuna, who promptly coughed up the lead on an 0-2 fastball."Sometimes baseball will make you sick to your stomach, literally," Astros manager AJ Hinch said.--Field Level Media

Springer and Altuve homer to lead Astros over Athletics 4-2HOUSTON Jose Altuve and George Springer both hit two-run homers to back up another solid start by Justin Verlander and give the Houston Astros a 4-2 win over the Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.Houston bounced back after Tuesday's 4-3 loss in 11 innings snapped a six-game winning streak and improved to 9-2 against the Athletics this season.Verlander (13-4) allowed two singles and one run, which was unearned, while striking out 11 in six innings for his third straight win. Semien scored with one out when Matt Olson singled and reached second on an error by Josh Reddick in right field.Bassitt was rolling early and retired the first seven batters he faced, striking out the first five, before Robinson Chirinos doubled with one out in the third. Springer's two-strike home run came with two outs to put Houston up 2-1. Springer has 23 home runs in 71 games this season after hitting 22 in 140 games last year.Verlander had sat down nine straight when he walked Jurickson Profar with two outs in the fifth. Profar stole second base, but was left stranded when Verlander struck out Semien to end the inning.Bassitt plunked Chirinos on the hand to start Houston's fifth before Altuve homered to straightaway center field with two outs to extend the lead to 4-1.Mark Canha singled off Verlander with two outs in the sixth before he struck out Ramon Laureano to end the inning and his day.TRAINER'S ROOMAstros: SS Carlos Correa (fractured rib) will wrap up a rehabilitation assignment at Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday and is expected to be activated from the 60-day injured list on Friday.UP NEXTAthletics: LHP Brett Anderson (9-5, 3.82 ERA) will start for Oakland in the opener of a four-game series against Texas on Thursday night. GAME PREVIEW
Red-hot Suarez, Reds eye sweep of BrewersFLMThe good news for the Brewers is that closer Josh Hader should be fresh. Whether Milwaukee can actually get a lead to Hader is another story. The Brewers hope they can hand Hader a save opportunity or else win comfortably Wednesday afternoon when they host the Cincinnati Reds, trying to avert a three-game sweep.Milwaukee won five of six entering the series and utilized Hader three times. After using him for the final two games in Arizona over the weekend, the Brewers stayed away from him Monday and dropped a 6-5 decision when Jeremy Jeffress allowed a go-ahead two-run homer to Eugenio Suarez. It was Suarez's second home run of the game.Hader, who has 22 saves, a 2.27 ERA and 88 strikeouts in 47 2/3 innings, was not needed Tuesday because the Brewers could not get Suarez out in another loss, 14-6. Suarez hit a two-run homer, had an RBI double and reached base four times as the Brewers allowed 17 hits. The last two nights pushed Milwaukee into third place in the NL Central and came on the heels of losing ace Brandon Woodruff for possibly six weeks due to a strained left oblique."Who we're playing doesn't matter," Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell said. "You've got to play a good game to win. That's the big leagues, that's the National League. And we're not playing well enough in these games. We didn't come close to playing well enough tonight." The Reds lead the season series 8-7 and have won the past five meetings between the teams thanks to Suarez's hot bat. Eight of Suarez's 27 homers are against Milwaukee, and he is batting .295 (18-for-61) with 17 RBIs in the season series."He's very patient, aggressive when he needs to be, but stays within the zone," Davies said of Suarez. "He's a tough out. Good swing, strong guy. You can make your pitch, and he can still be able to get a hit out of it." Joey Votto and Jesse Winker also homered Tuesday for the Reds, who have won five straight over Milwaukee for the first time in a single season since winning seven in a row in 2010."It's a good team over there," Winker said. "That's a great lineup, good pitching staff. It's great to come in here and win the first two." Jhoulys Chacin (3-10, 5.67 ERA) will start for Milwaukee on Wednesday, seeking his first win since April 30. Chacin, who is 0-7 with a 6.22 ERA in his last 10 starts, allowed seven runs (six earned) on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings Friday in Arizona.Chacin is 3-4 with a 4.14 ERA in 13 career appearances (11 starts) against Cincinnati.Lucas Sims (1-0, 3.72 ERA) will start for Cincinnati in place of Tyler Mahle, who is on the injured list with a strained left hamstring.Sims is making his second start of the season, his first career appearance against Milwaukee, and he is pitching after making two relief appearances over the weekend against St. Louis.--Field Level Media

Grandal, Hader lift Brewers over Reds 5-4 to avoid sweepMILWAUKEE Before setting their sights on a weekend series with the NL Central-leading Cubs, the Brewers had a most frustrating skid that needed addressed.Ryan Braun and Keston Hiura homered, Yasmani Grandal hit a go-ahead single and Josh Hader made a lights-out relief appearance to lift the Brewers over the Cincinnati Reds 5-4 Wednesday.Grandal delivered his two-run single in the fifth, Hader struck out five over two scoreless innings and Freddy Peralta pitched the ninth for his first save as Milwaukee avoided a three-game sweep and ended a five-game losing streak against Cincinnati.Next up: three home games against Chicago beginning Friday.''There are still 60 games left, we're not down to the wire,'' said Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell. ''But it's an important series, for sure, it's against a team that's ahead of us. So, we want to keep ourselves right there.'' With two on and two out in the fifth inning, Reds left-hander Amir Garrett walked Christian Yelich to load the bases. Grandal grounded a 3-2 fastball into left field, scoring two and putting the Brewers up.Hader got the ball to Freddy Peralta, who pitched the ninth for his first save. Peralta has not allowed a run in his last five games, striking out 12 over 6 1/3 innings.Reds center fielder Nick Senzel led off the game with a single but was replaced by Phillip Ervin. Senzel appeared to be woozy, and the team said he left due to illness. Senzel missed games this season and last season because of migraines or vertigo.Josh VanMeter hit his second homer and Joey Votto and Scooter Gennett had RBI hits to help Cincinnati build a 4-2 lead against starter Jhoulys Chacin. Braun kept Milwaukee close with a two-run shot in the first, his 15th homer of the season. The Brewers received a respite when Eugenio Suarez was given a planned day off, until he entered the game in the eighth and was struck out by Hader. Suarez has homered eight times in 16 games against Milwaukee this season, including two-run home runs in three consecutive at-bats over the first two games of the series.Chacin hasn't won since April 30. He was pulled after three innings with right ribcage discomfort. Matt Albers (5-3) got one out for the win.Reds right-hander Lucas Sims (1-1), making his second start of the season and his first since May 28, gave up five runs on three hits in 4 2/3 innings, including the homers by Braun and Hiura. He retired 10 straight batters between the two home runs.Sims made a flashy defensive play in the fifth, diving across the third base line to catch Tyler Saladino's foul bunt attempt.TRAINER'S ROOMReds: C Juan Graterol was replaced during the third after a foul tip knocked his mask off. A trainer appeared to be examining Graterol's jaw. Bell said the team is still evaluating GraterolBrewers: RHP Taylor Williams was recalled from Triple-A San Antonio, and RHP Burch Smith was optioned.KINGS OF KsBrewers batters entered Tuesday leading the NL in strikeouts. They struck out seven times Wednesday, pushing the team total to 987. ... Hader entered Wednesday with 88 strikeouts in 47 ? innings, most among major league relievers.HOT HITTERVanMeter recorded a career-high three hits, with two RBIs. He is 6 for 12 since being recalled from Triple-A Louisville last Thursday, with two home runs and four RBIs.UP NEXTReds: Luis Castillo (9-3, 2.36 ERA) faces Colorado in Cincinnati on Friday. His ERA is 1.69 over his last four starts. The Rockies hadn't named a starter.Brewers: The Brewers had not announced a starter to face the Cubs' Jose Quintana (8-7, 4.42 ERA) on Friday in Milwaukee.---More MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Orioles hope there's Means to an end vs. D-backsFLMThe Baltimore Orioles will send out their best starting pitcher Wednesday afternoon as they try to win a second consecutive series when they face the Arizona Diamondbacks in Phoenix.Baltimore split the first two games in the interleague series after winning two of three games at home against the Boston Red Sox.Rookie left-hander John Means (8-5, 2.95 ERA) picked up one of those victories over Boston by allowing two runs and four hits over six innings on Friday."He did what John Means has done all year, keep guys off balance," Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said. "I love that he flashed more breaking balls." Means enters Wednesday's rubber match on a hot streak, having given up more than two earned runs just once in the past eight starts. He is 3-1 in those eight starts, losing only when he yielded six runs in six innings to the visiting Tampa Bay Rays on July 13.Means will be opposed by another 26-year-old rookie -- right-hander Taylor Clarke (2-3, 6.50 ERA).Clarke struggled Friday against the Milwaukee Brewers, pitching for the first time since going on the injured list July 3 because of a back injury. The Brewers knocked him around for seven hits and four runs in 3 2/3 innings.Arizona has been in one-step-forward, one-step-backward mode for more than a month. The Diamondbacks have not been more than two games above or below .500 since June 18. Baltimore won 7-2 Tuesday night to drop the D-backs to 51-51."Couldn't really get anything going offensively," Arizona manager Torey Lovullo said. "This is one of those games we have to throw it out, because the turnaround is pretty quick. We have to wash this one off as fast as we can so it doesn't linger into a day game." Arizona optioned infielder Ildemaro Vargas to Triple-A Reno after the game, with a corresponding transaction to be announced Wednesday. The move could be the return of outfielder David Peralta (shoulder) from the injured list. He has been rehabbing in the rookie-level Arizona League. One of the issues for Arizona lately has been that it hasn't scored after the fifth inning in any of the past six games, posting a 2-4 record in that span. Baltimore took a 7-2 lead in the third inning Tuesday night -- and that was that."Was it a bad loss? Yes," Lovullo said. "I think after the seven runs were scored, we got a little flat-lined. No doubt about it." Baltimore's Renato Nunez has homered in each of the first two games of the series -- and in three of his past four games -- to give him a team-leading 24. He is usually the designated hitter for the Orioles but made his first start of the season at third base while playing under National League rules.Hyde wanted to keep Nunez's bat in the lineup, along with Chris Davis, who played first. Nunez has 10 starts at first base this season after starting 56 games at third last year. Hyde has indicated that Nunez could see more time in the field at the corner spots."It feels great to be back over there," Nunez said on MASNsports.com. "I'm going to practice a lot, take a lot of ground balls and just enjoy the time there." --Field Level Media

Kelly's homer lifts Diamondbacks over Orioles 5-2PHOENIX Taylor Clarke was essentially pitching for his spot in Arizona's rotation. The Arizona right-hander was good enough to keep it, at least for now.Shaking off a rough previous outing, Clarke pitched six effective innings and Carson Kelly hit a three-run homer, lifting the Diamondbacks to a 5-2 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday.''You don't want to put too much pressure on yourself,'' Clarke said. ''When it becomes too much, I just try to treat it like any other start.'' The Orioles won their first game at Chase Field since 2007 Tuesday night, beating the Diamondbacks 7-2 to end a six-game losing streak in the desert.Arizona closed out the series win with Kelly's homer off John Means (8-6) in the fourth inning, a bounce-back performance by Clarke (3-3) and a little late-inning drama.Arizona's Yoshihisa Hirano and Archie Bradley worked out of bases-loaded jams in the seventh and eighth innings.Greg Holland started the ninth, but was visited by Arizona's trainer after a walk, then was removed by manager Torey Lovullo following another walk. Yoan Lopez got the final three outs for his first career save.''I'm not sure what exactly was going on with the command,'' Lovullo said. ''He wasn't hurt - we went out there with the trainer - his stuff just wasn't what we've seen it. Those are hard decisions I have to make.'' Ketel Marte also hit a solo homer to become the first Diamondbacks player to hit 10 or more homers from both sides of the plate.Trey Mancini and Anthony Santander homered for the Orioles, who squandered multiple opportunities late. Baltimore went 1 for 9 with runners in scoring position and left the bases loaded twice in late innings to spoil the chance to win its first series after the All-Star break.''We didn't make enough contact late in the game with runners on base,'' Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said. ''We had them on the ropes a few times and just didn't do a good job of putting the ball in play.'' Clarke had a shaky return from the injured list because of back inflammation, allowing four runs and seven hits in 3 2/3 innings against Milwaukee on Friday. The right-hander had the Orioles guessing most of the afternoon, but made a couple of mistakes: Santander homered in the fourth inning and Mancini hit another, his 22nd of the season, in the sixth.Clarke allowed two runs and four hits and struck out seven in six innings.''He needed to step up and get the job done and he did,'' Lovullo said. ''There's a lot of toughness there.'' Means stranded runners in the second and third innings, quickly running up his pitch count. He ran into trouble in the fourth inning, when Kelly hit a three-run homer and was pulled after the next two batters reached base.Means allowed three runs and six hits and threw 95 pitches in 3 1/3 innings. He also legged out an infield single in the third inning for his first career hit.''I felt good in the beginning and then in that fourth inning, I was overthrowing pitches,'' Means said. ''I got out of my motion and there was a lot that went wrong.'' UMPIRE INTERFERENCEThe Diamondbacks appeared to have added a run in the seventh inning when Baltimore catcher Pedro Severino's pickoff attempt at first sailed into right field and Jarrod Dyson scored from second.Plate umpire Nic Lentz called interference on himself when Severino's arm hit him on the mask before the throw. Lovullo quickly came out of the dugout to argue with Lentz, but the call stood and both runners returned to their bases.''I was assuming called batter obstruction,'' Lovullo said. ''At that point, I backed down because in that case the umpire was right.'' TRAINER'S TABLEDiamondbacks: David Peralta was activated from the 10-day injured list and grounded out as a pinch hitter in the seventh inning. He had been out since July 5 with right AC joint inflammation. Arizona optioned INF Ildemaro Vargas to Triple-A Reno to make room on the roster.UP NEXTOrioles: RHP Tom Eshelman (0-2, 6.91 ERA), Thursday's starter against the Angels, is seeking his first quality start since joining the rotation at the beginning of the month.Diamondbacks: RHP Zack Greinke (10-4, 2.93) could be making his final start in an Arizona uniform Thursday at Miami. The two-time Cy Young Award winner is rumored to be on the trading block so the Diamondbacks can shed the $64 million remaining on his contract after this season.---More MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Rangers' Minor, Mariners' Leake face off amid trade talkFLMThe Texas Rangers' Mike Minor and Seattle Mariners' Mike Leake know that when they take the mound Wednesday afternoon at T-Mobile Park, it might be their last starts with their respective teams.Minor (8-5, 2.86 ERA) and Leake (8-8, 4.27) have both been mentioned as candidates to be moved by the July 31 trading deadline. What has been different is how the two veteran pitchers have reacted to the trade rumors."If it happens, it happens," the left-handed Minor told MLB.com after his last start, a 4-3 loss at Houston on Friday. "It's there, but it's more about staying in the routine and keep on pitching. I see it, you guys (reporters) talk about it. I've got to do my best to kind of keep it external, out of the clubhouse. I'm trying to do a job." At the All-Star break, it seemed as if the Rangers might be buyers at the deadline in their chase for an American League wild-card berth. But an eight-game losing streak since the break dampened those plans."It does make us mad," Minor said. "We've played well all season, then we lose a couple of games and we're supposedly ready to deal guys when we have 2 1/2 months left in the season. ..."I don't want to go anywhere. My name was talked about in the offseason, so I'm used to it. It seems like ever since I signed, I've been a topic. It's like I signed here just to be traded." First-year Rangers manager Chris Woodward said he understood the frustration."It is distracting when the idea of us being sellers gets thrown out there," Woodward said. "Players don't want to hear that. They still have the belief that we are going to win a World Series. I don't ever want to take that away from them." Leake perhaps enhanced his trade value in his last outing Friday, when he took a perfect game into the ninth inning of a 10-0 victory against the Los Angeles Angels. Luis Rengifo spoiled the perfect game and no-hitter with a single to right field leading off the final inning, but Leake finished with his second career shutout. As for the trade talk?"I think I've been talked about being traded for almost a year now. It's kind of normal right now," the right-hander told MLB.com.Leake said he felt his last start was more important because it might have been an audition for a playoff team."I was kind of forcing myself to think that way as well, especially since it really was (important) in a way," Leake said. "It was a perfect-game chase. I think that's similar to throwing in a playoff situation. If the opportunity presents itself, I would think about it. It might happen." Minor has defeated Leake and the Mariners twice this season, striking out a season-high 13 in seven innings of a 15-1 victory April 27 at Seattle. He fanned 11 in a 10-9 victory May 20 at Texas, allowing two runs in six innings.Minor is 3-3 with a 4.04 ERA in 10 career appearances (seven starts) against Seattle; Leake is 1-3 with a 4.60 ERA in eight career starts versus the Rangers. Both teams might be missing sluggers in the series finale, as Mariners outfielder Domingo Santana (right elbow) and Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo (right wrist) left Tuesday's game early.According to the Seattle Times, Santana is to have an MRI exam on Wednesday. An X-ray of Gallo's wrist, meanwhile, showed no broken bones, The Dallas Morning News reported, but he too could undergo an MRI exam on Wednesday.--Field Level Media

Leake outpitches Minor as Mariners topple Rangers 5-3SEATTLE Mike Leake outpitched Mike Minor in what could be the final start for each before the upcoming trade deadline, Daniel Vogelbach hit a pair of solo home runs, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 5-3 on Wednesday.Leake and Minor have both been the subject of trade rumors - Minor more than Leake - leading up to next week's trade deadline. But it was Leake with the better performance in his first start since taking a perfect game into the ninth inning last Friday against the Angels.Leake (9-8) threw seven innings, his only mistake giving up a two-out, two-strike home run to Roughned Odor in the sixth inning. Leake struck out seven, walked none and threw first-pitch strikes to 22 of 29 batters.Leake's streak of 14 consecutive scoreless innings ended thanks to Odor. After a pair of two-out singles, Leake left an 0-2 pitch to Odor elevated and the Texas second baseman didn't miss, hitting his 18th home run of the season and fourth of the series. Odor homered in the series opener on Monday and hit a pair of long balls on Tuesday night.Anthony Bass worked a perfect eighth in relief of Leake and Roenis Elias pitched the ninth for his 13th save. The Rangers lost for the ninth time in 10 games.Minor (8-6) has acknowledged all the trade discussions have been a distraction, especially with the Rangers' slide after the All-Star break that has seen them fall from wild-card contenders into likely sellers over the next week. Minor seemed fine for the first four innings before running into trouble in the fifth.Vogelbach started the big inning with a line drive shot down the right field line for his 24th homer. That was the start of four straight hits to start the inning, including an RBI infield single from Kristopher Negron. An error by catcher Jeff Mathis scored another run and J. P. Crawford capped the four-run inning with an RBI single.Vogelbach hit his second homer in the sixth, a towering shot to right-center. It was his third career multihomer game.Minor was lifted after the sixth, giving up eight hits and four earned runs. He struck out five.NO GALLOTexas slugger Joey Gallo was out of the lineup after leaving Tuesday's game with a sore right wrist that's bothered him for a while. X-rays were negative, but it was unclear if a stint on the injured list is needed.SANTANA WATCHSeattle is still awaiting the results of an MRI on the right elbow of outfielder Domingo Santana after he left Tuesday's game with discomfort in his arm. Santana said the elbow has been bothering him since the All-Star break and was aggravated making a throw in Tuesday's game. While Seattle has not made a decision on whether Santana needs to go on the injured list, it appears likely he'll miss several games.UP NEXTRangers: RHP Ariel Jurado (5-6) will start as Texas begins a four-game series in Oakland. Jurado will make his 12th start, but is 0-3 with an 8.31 ERA in July.Mariners: Seattle is expected to use an opener to be followed by LHP Wade LeBlanc on Thursday against Detroit. LeBlanc (5-3) has a 3.05 ERA in eight games after using an opener.---More MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/-Sports

Rampaging Giants shoot for sweep of CubsFLMTwo undefeated pitchers in July put their winning streaks on the line Wednesday afternoon when the San Francisco Giants attempt to close out a three-game sweep of the visiting Chicago Cubs. The Giants have won the first two games of the series by identical 5-4 scores, needing 13 innings on Tuesday to record the 10th win in the past 11 games.Five of those 10 wins came in extra innings, all in the past eight days. The Cubs, who lost the last game of a homestand on Sunday following a four-game winning streak, have now dropped three straight. The surging Giants will send right-hander Tyler Beede (3-3, 4.70 ERA) in search of the club's 18th win in 21 games.Beede is coming off the best performance of his two-year career, when he shut out the New York Mets on three hits over eight innings in a 1-0 win on Friday. The 26-year-old did not get a decision in that game after he went 2-0 in his previous two starts. He owns a 1.66 ERA in three July starts.Beede has never faced the Cubs. The Cubs' Wednesday starter, left-hander Jon Lester (9-6, 3.87 ERA), has gone head-to-head with the Giants six times in his career, producing a 5-1 record with a 2.00 ERA. That includes a 2-1 mark with a 2.70 ERA in three starts at San Francisco.Like Beede, Lester has two wins and a no-decision in three July starts, over which he's compiled a 3.79 ERA. The no-decision came in his most recent effort, a 6-5 home win over San Diego on Friday, when he gave up four runs on 12 hits in six innings. With the Cubs staring at a pair of three-game series at the sites of National League Central challengers -- Milwaukee and St. Louis -- after completing the San Francisco set on Wednesday, and the Giants dealing with five extra-inning games in eight days, both clubs spent Tuesday afternoon making pitching plans. The Cubs copied a move the Giants had made one day earlier, demoting Monday's starting pitcher, Alec Mills, in order to add left-hander Tim Collins to their bullpen. The Giants did the same with Sunday starter Conner Menez on Monday, sending him to Triple-A Sacramento so that right-hander Sam Coonrod could be available for the Chicago series. That moved proved to be a stroke of genius, as the Giants had to call upon Coonrod as a fifth reliever in Tuesday's game. He retired the Cubs in order in the top of the 13th, then was rewarded with his first major league win when Pablo Sandoval connected for a walk-off home run in the bottom of the inning. As Giants manager Bruce Bochy had the day before, Cubs manager Joe Maddon found himself basically apologizing to Mills after the transaction."He knows he did his job," Maddon said to reporters. "I really like the way he pitches and I told him so." Bochy, meanwhile, admitted his attention will be divided Wednesday between San Francisco and Arizona, where Giants right-hander Johnny Cueto will face live hitters for the first time in a workout since undergoing Tommy John surgery."I love the progress he's made," Bochy told reporters. "I'm not going to be surprised to see him pitch (for the Giants) in September." --Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Stroman again in shop window as Jays host IndiansFLMThe Toronto Blue Jays finally won a game against the visiting Cleveland Indians Tuesday night. Now they have a chance to win a series. After losing the first five meetings of the season between the teams -- including four at Cleveland in April -- the Blue Jays came back to win 2-1 in 10 innings on Tuesday. Each team has one victory in the three-game series.Justin Smoak tied the Tuesday contest with a ninth-inning home run and won it with a 10th-inning single. The Indians will send out right-hander Shane Bieber (9-3, 3.69 ERA) in the rubber match Wednesday against Blue Jays right-hander Marcus Stroman (6-10, 3.06).As the July 31 trade deadline approaches, each start Stroman makes could be his last for the Blue Jays. He has been the subject of trade rumors all season, and he has talked as if a deal is inevitable, possibly to the New York Yankees or Atlanta Braves.Stroman took the loss in Cleveland on April 7 when he allowed three runs in six innings. In seven games (six starts) against Cleveland, he is 1-1 with a 3.15 ERA. He pitched seven shutout innings Friday in the 12-1 win over the Detroit Tigers. There are several other trade possibilities for the Blue Jays, one being closer Ken Giles, who pitched the top of the 10th inning Tuesday to earn the win. He was with the Houston Astros in 2017 when they won the World Series."I love it here," Giles said of Toronto this week. "My family loves it here. I would love to be here longer than most people probably expect me to, but that's out of my hands. So I'm just going to let it flow and let it ride." Giles has 14 saves in 15 opportunities this season and is 2-2 with a 1.59 ERA."I have something more important to think about, with a baby coming soon," Giles said. "My mind is on that and making sure my wife is taken care of. But when it comes to deadline stuff, that's not even in my head right now. ... I've already gone through the stressful levels in baseball, so it's already like, 'What's the worst that can happen?'"Bieber earned the win against the Kansas City Royals on Friday despite allowing five runs, seven hits and four walks in 5 2/3 innings. In two career appearances (one start) against the Blue Jays, he is 1-0 with a 3.65 ERA. He got a no-decision against Toronto on April 5 when he allowed two runs, two hits and two walks while striking out nine in six innings. The Indians are 29-12 since June 4, and one reason is that second baseman Jason Kipnis has been hot at the plate. Despite going 0-for-4 Tuesday as the designated hitter, Kipnis is batting .306 (34-for-111) with five homers and 22 RBIs in his past 30 games."That's when it becomes fun," Kipnis said, "when everybody's all in and everybody's got a hand in the wins and it's not just a couple guys that are carrying the team. We knew it was going to be a scrappy team and we were going to have to find our identity. They're not going to be the same roles that we had in the past or what they were in spring training." His next start at second base will be No. 1,000 in his career.--Field Level Media

Bieber tosses 1-hitter, fans 10 as Indians top Blue Jays 4-0TORONTO Shane Bieber pitched a one-hitter, allowing only a double by Eric Sogard in the seventh inning, and the Cleveland Indians kept up their surge by beating the Toronto Blue Jays 4-0 on Wednesday night. The Indians topped prime trade target Marcus Stroman and improved to 14-4 in July. They are 30-12 since June 4, the best record in the majors over that span.Bieber (10-3) struck out 10 and walked one in his second career complete game. The MVP of the All-Star Game blanked Baltimore on May 19 when he fanned 15.Sogard spoiled Bieber's bid when he opened the seventh when a drive that bounced over the right field wall. One out later, Lourdes Gurriel Jr. was hit by a pitch, but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. flied out and Justin Smoak struck out to end the inning.Bieber pitched a rain-shortened, seven-inning no-hitter at Triple-A in May 2018, less than a week before making his big league debut. He became the youngest Indians pitcher to throw a shutout while giving up no more than one hit and striking out at least 10 since a 22-year-old Dennis Eckersley no-hit the Angels in 1977, MLB.com said.Greg Allen had three hits and an RBI and Jose Ramirez had two hits and scored a run.Cleveland broke through in the in the fifth when Allen hit a two-out single and scored on Kevin Plawecki's double, sliding home just ahead of the tag. Toronto challenged the call, but home plate umpire Fieldin Culbrehth's call stood.Stroman (6-11) allowed one run and five hits in seven innings, further burnishing his credentials ahead of next week's trade deadline. Stroman pitched seven shutout innings to beat Detroit last Friday. The loss was Stroman's first since June 20 at Texas, ending a streak of five unbeaten starts.Cleveland doubled its lead against Daniel Hudson in the eighth. Francisco Lindor hit a one-out double, stole third and scored on Oscar Mercado's sacrifice fly.The Indians tacked on two more against right-hander Wilmer Font in the ninth. Jonathan Luplow hit an RBI grounder and a second run scored on Allen's single.TRAINER'S ROOMIndians: RHP Corey Kluber threw a 35-pitch bullpen session before the game. Kluber has been sidelined since May 1, when he was hit by a line drive from Miami's Brian Anderson and broke a bone in his forearm. Kluber will throw another bullpen Saturday. ... OF Tyler Naquin (right hamstring) was held out of the starting lineup for the second straight day, but did run on the field before the game.Blue Jays: RHP Justin Shafer was available out of the bullpen. Shafer left Monday's game because of a sore elbow.UP NEXTIndians: RHP Adam Plutko (3-2, 4.81) starts Thursday as the Indians begin a four-game series in Kansas City. LHP Mike Montgomery (1-3, 6.83) starts for the Royals. Plutko is 0-2 in four career games against Kansas City.Blue Jays: Toronto is off Thursday. GAME PREVIEW
Mets, Padres tangle in matchup of fringe contendersFLMJason Vargas and Robinson Cano each turned back the clock Tuesday night and did something their younger selves rarely or ever accomplished. It's going to take a lot more than one game, though, for the New York Mets to reset the clock on their 2019 season. The Mets envision building on the momentum created by Vargas and Cano when New York hosts the San Diego Padres on Wednesday night in the middle game of a three-game series.Noah Syndergaard (7-4, 4.36 ERA) is scheduled to take the mound for the Mets against the Padres' Dinelson Lamet (0-2, 5.14 ERA) in a battle of right-handers.Vargas and Cano lifted the Mets to victory Tuesday night, when Vargas earned by allowing only one hit in six scoreless innings and Cano enjoyed the first three-homer game of his career as he accounted for all of New York's runs in a 5-2 win.It was just the third time in 235 career starts that Vargas limited an opponent to one hit over at least six innings. Cano's three-homer game was the 14th in Mets' history and only the third in a home game.Unfortunately for the Mets, the big night by their two 36-year-old veterans did little to change the club's daunting long-term prospects. At 46-54, New York is tied with the Pittsburgh Pirates for the second-worst record in the National League. The two teams are seven games behind the second wild card, the St. Louis Cardinals."We're working hard to right everything that's gone bad, and that's what we'll always do," Mets manager Mickey Callaway said Tuesday night. "We wish our record was better at this point. Obviously, that's something we regret at this point." A poor start to the second half has left the Padres alongside the Mets as afterthoughts in the NL wild-card race. San Diego has lost eight of 10 since the All-Star break to fall to 47-53.But even if the Padres never get back into the race, the second half will be full of pivotal moments for one of the youngest starting rotations in baseball.Lamet, 27, is scheduled Wednesday to make his fourth start since returning from Tommy John surgery. He didn't factor into the decision on July 18, when he allowed three runs (one earned) over four innings as San Diego fell to the Miami Marlins, 4-3.Lamet, who went under the knife in April 2018, has struck out 19 but walked six in 14 innings over his first three starts."The more I'm on the mound, the better I feel," Lamet told reporters after his last start. "The more batters I face, the better I feel." Syndergaard didn't factor into the decision on July 18, when he gave up one run over seven innings as the Mets fell to the San Francisco Giants 3-2 in 16 innings.Syndergaard is 1-2 with a 4.88 ERA in four career starts against the Padres. Lamet will be facing the Mets for the first time since his major league debut on May 25, 2017, when he earned the win after allowing one run over five innings in the Padres' 4-3 victory.--Field Level Media

Craig Stammen got into and out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh before Andrew Munoz and Luis Perdomo tossed a hitless inning apiece. The Padres scored three times in third, helped by a pair of one-out walks by Syndergaard (7-5) and two misplays by Smith with two outs.Manuel Margot walked, stole second base and then swiped third as Manny Machado coaxed a full-count walk. Margot scored on a sacrifice fly by Eric Hosmer.Hunter Renfroe hit an RBI single and went to second on Smith's first error. Franmil Reyes followed with a double and took third when Smith's throw sailed off the glove of shortstop Amed Rosario. The Padres added insurance in the eighth when Austin Hedges doubled home a run and Tatis had an RBI single.Jeff McNeil hit a leadoff double in the Mets first and scored on Michael Conforto's single. Lamet retired Rosario on a flyball with the bases loaded to end the inning.Conforto doubled in the third on scored on Robinson Cano's groundout. A day after hitting three home runs and going 4 for 4, Cano was hitless in four at-bats.TRAINER'S ROOMPadres: OF Travis Jankowski went 1 for 5 Tuesday night for Triple-A El Paso. He missed the first 99 games of the season with a broken left wrist before he was activated from the injured list and optioned on Monday.Mets: RHP Zack Wheeler (right shoulder) felt fine after throwing off the mound Tuesday and is slated to come off the injured list to start Friday night against the Pirates.UP NEXTPadres: LHP Eric Lauer (5-7, 4.31 ERA) will look to snap a six-start winless streak. He is 0-3 with a 4.60 ERA since beating Philadelphia on June 3.Mets: NL Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom (5-7, 3.02 ERA) is aiming to win consecutive starts for just the second time this year.---More MLB coverage: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Royals' Keller set for hometown debut in AtlantaFLMKansas City's Brad Keller will have extra motivation -- and a few additional fans in the seats -- when he faces the Atlanta Braves in the finale of a two-game series on Wednesday.Keller, who is from Flowery Branch, Ga., a northeastern suburb of Atlanta, will make his first career appearance against his hometown team at Atlanta's SunTrust Park. The right-hander was drafted and signed by the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2013 before being acquired by Kansas City in 2017.Keller (6-9, 4.18 ERA) will be opposed by veteran Atlanta right-hander Julio Teheran (5-6, 3.61).The Royals won the series opener 5-4 on Tuesday when they rallied for three runs in the eighth inning against the Braves' bullpen. It was the first meeting between the two clubs in Atlanta since 2013.Keller is enjoying a very good month. In three starts during July, he is 2-0 with a 1.80 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 20 innings. He beat the Chicago White Sox in his most recent start on Thursday, pitching 6 1/3 innings and giving up four runs, two earned, with seven strikeouts and two walks. He had allowed two combined runs in 13 2/3 innings in his two previous starts against Detroit and Washington.Keller has never faced the Braves. This will be his ninth interleague game, sixth start, and he is 1-2 with a 4.45 ERA against the National League. He has allowed just one homer in 32 1/3 innings in interleague competition."We're playing really good ball right now," Keller said of the Royals. "The offense is alive and killing it right now. The starters and relievers are doing their job. The (All-Star) break helped us, I think." Teheran has bounced back from a rough June to pitch well in three July starts. In his last appearance on Friday against the Nationals, Teheran allowed one run on four hits and struck out five in 5 2/3 innings. He has walked only three batters in 17 2/3 innings while compiling a 1.53 ERA this month.Teheran has faced the Royals only once in his career. He lost to them in 2016, despite allowing only two runs, one earned, in seven innings. This will be the 27th interleague start for Teheran, who is 6-13 with a 5.30 against American League opposition. He has allowed 33 homers in 149 1/3 innings in interleague games. The Braves will hope for more production Wednesday from center fielder Ronald Acuna Jr., who went 0-for-3 and drew a walk on Tuesday and has reached base in 28 consecutive games. His on-base streak dates, which dates back to June 19, is the longest active stretch in the majors. Acuna also stole a base Tuesday, giving him 22."Thirty-thirty is the goal," Acuna said. "Stealing bases is probably one of the favorite parts of the game for me. Any chance when I get on base, I'm going to try to steal one." Alex Gordon has been hot for the Royals. The left fielder was 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs and two RBIs on Tuesday, making him 10-for-25 (.400) over his past six games. Gordon has nine multi-hit games since July 2.The Royals improved to 4-5 in interleague games and the Braves fell to 4-3 against the American League. The two clubs meet again Sept. 24-25 in Kansas City.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Keller allows only 4 hits, has RBI as Royals top Braves 2-0ATLANTA Having a hometown cheering section gave Brad Keller a boost.Facing his hometown team may have done even more for Keller's adrenaline.Keller thrived in his Georgia homecoming, allowing only four hits in seven innings while adding a second-inning single for his first career RBI , and the Kansas City Royals beat Julio Teheran and the Atlanta Braves 2-0 on Wednesday night.Keller (7-9), a 2013 graduate of Flowery Branch High School north of Atlanta, won his fourth straight decision.''That was a blast to be able to come out here and pitch in front of my home team, I guess,'' Keller said. ''It was a lot of fun and a ton of adrenaline was going, especially in the first.'' Keller had been 2-6 with a 4.81 ERA in 13 road starts this season. There were no signs of those road struggles as he did not allow a baserunner to reach second base. The big, hard-throwing Keller (6-5, 230) ended the fourth by striking out Brian McCann on a 98 mph fastball. He ended the sixth by striking out Freddie Freeman with a fastball clocked at 97 mph.''He looked like a kid who grew up bailing hay,'' Braves manager Brian Snitker said of Keller. ''A big, strong guy. He was pounding his fastball. We didn't do anything with him.'' The Royals swept the two-game series, leaving the Braves 4-4 against the American League this season. Atlanta hasn't had a winning record in interleague play since posting an 11-9 mark in 2013.The Braves began the day 5 1/2 games ahead of second-place Washington in the NL East. The Royals have won nine of 12.An error by Freeman at first base contributed to Kansas City's two-run second inning. Jorge Soler, who walked, advanced to third on Bubba Starling's double. Nicky Lopez hit a sharp grounder to third baseman Josh Donaldson, who tagged Soler as he attempted to return to the base. With two outs, Meibrys Viloria's bad-hop grounder bounced past Freeman for an error, allowing Starling to score. Keller's single up the middle pushed the lead to 2-0. It was his second career hit and first RBI.After the hit, he said he told Freeman at first base it was all luck.''He said, `Was it that easy?' " Keller said. ''I said, `No, that was all luck.' Close your eyes and swing hard in case you get it.'' Through two innings, Teheran had thrown 52 pitches. Keller's count was only 19. Teheran (5-7) was more efficient the remainder of his night as he allowed four hits with two runs, none earned, in six innings.Teheran was helped by Ender Inciarte's catch of Alex Gordon's drive at the center field wall in the third.Ian Kennedy pitched a perfect ninth for his 19th save.TRAINER'S ROOMRoyals: RHP Jakob Junis, still listed as the probable starter for Friday night's game against Cleveland, was placed on paternity leave. His wife, Brie, gave birth to their third child, a son named Jett Boyd, on Tuesday night. RHP Jake Newberry was recalled from Triple-A Omaha.Braves: SS Dansby Swanson was held out with a sore heel. He banged the heel on first base in Tuesday night's game. Manager Brian Snitker said the team wanted to ''be smart about this'' and take advantage of Thursday's off day to give Swanson extra rest. ... LHP Max Fried (blister on his left index finger) is expected to start Saturday night at Philadelphia instead of Sunday's afternoon game. The Braves hope there will be less humidity to possibly aggravate the blister in Saturday night's game. ... Snitker said RHP Jacob Webb (right elbow impingement) will be on the injured list longer than first hoped.ON BASE AGAINRonald Acuna Jr.'s infield hit in the third inning extended his on-base streak to 29 games, the longest active streak in the majors. The hit was initially ruled a fielding error by third baseman Hunter Dozier. ... Soler's walk extended his on-base streak to 20 games.ROSTER MOVEBefore the game, the Braves optioned right-hander Wes Parsons to Triple-A Gwinnett and selected the contract of right-hander Jeremy Walker, who had a combined 2.84 ERA at Gwinnett and Double-A Mississippi this season.UP NEXTRoyals: LHP Mike Montgomery will make his second start since being acquired from the Cubs when Kansas City opens a four-game home series against RHP Adam Plutko (3-2, 4.81) and the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night.Braves: RHP Mike Soroka (10-2, 2.46) will start Friday night's series opener at Philadelphia.---More MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/-Sports

Playoff-like intensity continues for Yanks, TwinsFLMPlayoff-like intensity continues for Yanks, TwinsMinnesota right-hander Jake Odorizzi will try for his 12th victory of the season when the Twins face the New York Yankees in the rubber game of their hard-fought three-game series on Wednesday night in Minneapolis.Odorizzi (11-4, 3.18 ERA) is 7-8 with a 4.06 ERA in 17 games and 16 career starts against the Yankees. He shut out New York on two hits over six innings in a 7-3 victory at Yankee Stadium on May 4.Left-hander J. A. Happ (8-5, 4.86), who was the losing pitcher that afternoon, will start for the Yankees. Happ, who gave up four runs on seven hits in 5 2/3 innings in that contest, is 3-5 with a 5.04 ERA in nine career games and eight starts against Minnesota. However, in Target Field, the Twins' home since 2010, Happ is 3-2 with a 3.99 ERA in five starts. There has been a definite playoff atmosphere in the first two games of the series. The Twins won the opener 8-6 on Monday night, belting five home runs and turning a triple play in the process. The Yankees won Tuesday night 14-12 in 10 innings in a contest that included five lead changes in the final three innings and almost a sixth as center fielder Aaron Hicks made a highlight-reel, game-saving diving catch on a Max Kepler liner into the gap in left-center with the bases loaded to end the contest and preserve New York's win."Of course, for a game like this, it has to end in dramatic fashion," said Hicks, who also hit a two-run go-ahead homer in the ninth. "I was just running hard and wanted to make sure I made the catch, and I was able to." Hicks made a full-extension dive on the play, doing a belly-flop on the warning track."I knew Kepler hit it pretty well, but what an amazing play to end an amazing game," Yankees manager Aaron Boone said.Didi Gregorius became the first shortstop in American League history to have five hits and seven RBIs in a game. Gregorius finished 5-for-5 with a walk, a three-run home run and a pair of two-run doubles. The Twins, meanwhile, hit four more home runs to increase their major-league-leading total to 191, including two by Miguel Sano, the latter a 457-foot two-run blast off Zack Britton that gave Minnesota an 11-10 lead in the eighth."Every game matters," said Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge, who finished 3-for-6 with two doubles, two runs scored and two RBIs."Even though it's still July, that's a postseason game right there. They're going out there and giving their best, and we're going out there and giving our best. It just came down to who wanted it more at the end. We battled and clawed and came out with a win."We'll see them again down the road (in the playoffs) for sure." "I think it was a tremendous effort by our players," said Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli, who was ejected for arguing balls and strikes in the eighth inning. "I don't think we could be any prouder of the effort that we got from our players. Our players do not quit. They never quit." Tuesday night's win could be a costly one for the Yankees, however, as catcher Gary Sanchez left after the eighth inning with a groin injury suffered while trying to beat out a grounder. Boone said Sanchez, who has 24 home runs and 58 RBIs, will get an MRI before the game on Wednesday and that a trip to the injured list was "possible." --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Gregorius leads another Yankee hit parade, 10-7 over TwinsMINNEOLIS Didi Gregorius and the New York Yankees started this road trip in Minnesota and turned Target Field into a private batting cage.Next stop for this hitting machine? Fenway Park.Didi Gregorius drove in three more runs with two of New York's nine extra-base hits, and the Yankees clobbered Minnesota's pitching staff again in a 10-7 victory over the Twins on Wednesday night.Aaron Hicks, Gleyber Torres and Edwin Encarnacion each hit solo home runs for the Yankees, who outscored the Twins 30-27 to win this back-and-forth three-game series with a total of 48 hits, half of them for extra bases. Torres became just the second player in Yankees history with consecutive 20-homer seasons at age 22 or younger, joining Hall of Fame member Joe DiMaggio.Yankees manager Aaron Boone's description of the series? ''Hitterish.'' After ravaging Twins relievers during a split of the first two games, the Yankees turned on All-Star starter Jake Odorizzi (11-5) this time. He finished four innings, with 10 hits, nine runs and two walks allowed.Gregorius, who went 8 for 10 with 10 RBIs in his two starts, hit an RBI double to ignite a four-run second. Mike Tauchman added a two-run triple before the inning was over. Gregorius tacked on a two-run triple in the fourth and finished with three hits , one day after going 5 for 5 with seven RBIs.''Every single game was a battle, from pitch number one to the end,'' Hicks said.Eddie Rosario hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Marwin Gonzalez and Nelson Cruz later went deep for the Twins, who also got a big boost for their beleaguered bullpen from rookie Devin Smeltzer's five innings and one run allowed that helped them stay within striking distance. But after forcing the exit by Yankees starter J. A. Happ with only one out in their three-run fourth, the Twins tailed off against the bullpen. Despite totaling 12 home runs out of 32 hits themselves in the series, they emerged with just one win and watched their once-cushy lead in the AL Central over surging Cleveland drop to two games, the smallest since May 5.''Our guys all know we can compete and beat all these teams,'' Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. ''There were nights where we weren't playing our best baseball, maybe weren't clicking in every way, but we were still going out there and competing well.'' Nestor Cortes Jr. (4-0) picked up the victory after being recalled from Triple-A, Tommy Kahnle stranded two runners when he entered to finish the seventh inning, and Aroldis Chapman pitched a hitless ninth for his 26th save. The Yankees, meanwhile, took a 10-game lead in the AL East race to rival Boston to finish this trip.''Every time you get a chance to play them, you get a chance to bury them,'' Gregorius said. ''That's all you want to do, so keep expanding the lead.'' After the Twins turned a triple play and hit five home runs to hang on for an 8-6 victory on Monday, the Yankees responded with a 14-12 win on Tuesday that was even more of a rollercoaster ride featuring erasure of a six-run deficit after five and go-ahead rallies in the eighth, ninth and 10th innings before Hicks ended the five-hour game with a diving catch in center field with the bases loaded.According to research, that was just the second major league game in the last 40 years with blown leads in the top of the eighth, bottom of the eighth, top of the ninth and bottom of the ninth. The other was on July 17, 2000, between Colorado and Oakland.Producing an encore in the series finale that matched the entertainment value of the first two games was going to be awfully difficult, but the sellout crowd of 40,127 - the largest since the 2016 home opener - still saw plenty of action. And another Yankees win.''If you don't go out there and continually bring it to them, it's probably not going to work out well for you,'' Baldelli said.SUMMER SLOGHapp has logged only 33 innings over his last seven starts, with 45 hits and 12 walks allowed and a 6.82 ERA. Odorizzi's ERA has spiked from 1.92 to 3.84 over his last seven turns.POWERING THROUGHEncarnacion's homer off Smeltzer in the ninth came after he painfully fouled a ball off the top of his left foot. He was grimacing as he gingerly jogged around the bases for his 17th home run at Target Field. It marked his eighth straight year with at least 30 home runs and he's tied with Salvador Perez for the most by a visiting player in the 10-year history of the ballpark.TRAINER'S ROOMYankees: With Gary Sanchez going on the injured list with a strained left groin , the Yankees were also without LF Brett Gardner for the fourth straight game because of a sore left knee, still favoring precaution. Tauchman, conveniently, is 8 for 15 with seven runs and five RBIs over those four games in his place.Twins: CF Byron Buxton was given another day on the injured list, his 10th straight game missed following concussion-like symptoms and then wisdom teeth being pulled, but Baldelli hinted that he could be activated on Thursday. Buxton probably could've caught both triples that Jake Cave didn't in CF.UP NEXTYankees: RHP Masahiro Tanaka (7-5, 4.00 ERA) pitches the opener of the four-game series in Boston on Thursday night. RHP Rick Porcello (8-7, 5.61 ERA) takes the mound for the Red Sox, who are in third place, one game behind Tampa Bay.Twins: RHP Jose Berrios (8-5, 2.96 ERA) starts a four-game series in Chicago on Thursday night, with RHP Lucas Giolito (11-4, 3.12 ERA) taking the mound for the White Sox in a matchup of AL All-Stars.---More MLB coverage: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Moncada, White Sox aim for series win over MarlinsFLMThird baseman Yoan Moncada knows the ways of a nomad in the Chicago White Sox lineup, having batted first, second, fifth, sixth and seventh this season. When Moncada's debut in the cleanup spot Monday yielded two hits and four RBIs -- including a three-run home run -- first baseman Jose Abreu lobbied for all the shifting to stop.Abreu, Chicago's regular No. 3 hitter, would love to see Moncada batting behind him for not only Wednesday's home interleague series finale against the Miami Marlins, but well beyond."I can't control that, but if I would have that decision, I would put him in the cleanup spot for the rest of the season," Abreu said through an interpreter. "Everybody knows the talent he has and the importance for him to be that kind of player." A key acquisition in the trade that sent left-hander Chris Sale to the Boston Red Sox before the 2017 season, Moncada began his White Sox career as a second baseman before moving to the other side of the infield for the 2019 campaign.Whether it's his defensive position or spot in the batting order, Moncada leaves those things to manager Rick Renteria."I'm just ready to hit in whatever spot that Ricky and the team need me to," Moncada said through an interpreter. "That's my mindset. There's not too much of a difference if I hit fourth or second." Moncada also batted cleanup on Tuesday, going 0-for-4 with a strikeout as the Marlins evened the series with a 5-1 win. Moncada wasn't the only Chicago hitter to struggle, though, as Caleb Smith and two Miami relievers combined on a two-hitter.It wasn't enough for Abreu to change his view."If someone is happy that we finally found a cleanup hitter, it's me," Abreu said. "Nothing that (Moncada) does surprises me because I know all the talent he has. I know that he still can do more. He has been working hard. What he did (Monday) is not a surprise for me. I still know he's a great player, and I think we've seen that throughout the whole season this year. He's going to get better." The White Sox are set to face Marlins rookie right-hander Zac Gallen (0-2, 3.63 ERA), who will be making his sixth career start. Gallen has not pitched against Chicago or appeared in interleague play. His most recent start marked his longest in the major leagues to date. On Friday, Gallen scattered two runs -- one earned -- and three hits in 5 1/3 innings during a 2-1 road loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers."I thought it was pretty good against if not the best, then one of the best offenses in baseball," Gallen said. "We talked about last time the attention to detail. I think it's even more heightened when you come into a place like this (when) you're on the road and you play those guys." Right-hander Reynaldo Lopez is slated to get the call for the White Sox as he aims to continue a solid second half. Lopez (5-8, 5.76 ERA) has delivered two quality starts in as many outings since the All-Star break. On Friday, he earned a 9-2 win at Tampa Bay, allowing two runs over seven innings.Lopez has faced the Marlins once in his career, allowing two runs on three hits in two-thirds of an inning in a 2016 relief appearance.--Field Level Media
