GAME PREVIEW
Sep 25, 2018 To say things have been going well for the Los Angeles Rams is an understatement. The same can't be said for the Minnesota Vikings as the two teams prepare to play Thursday night on the West Coast. The Rams are 3-0 for the first time since 2001, Jared Goff is playing like an upper-echelon quarterback, wide receivers Brandin Cooks, Cooper Kupp and Robert Woods have essentially been unstoppable and running back Todd Gurley II looks every bit as good this year as he did last year. Defensively, they have played solid to downright dominant football while giving the offense as much time as needed to run away from opponents. But that doesn't mean things are perfect, and from an injury standpoint, things are beginning to add up in a bad way. In Sunday's win over the Los Angeles Chargers, the Rams lost cornerbacks Aqib Talib (high ankle sprain) and Marcus Peters (calf) and punt returner JoJo Natson (broken hand), who was replacing the injured Pharoh Cooper. Prior to that game, kicker Greg Zuerlein was sidelined by a groin injury. Talib is scheduled for surgery Thursday. They have been able to manage the injuries to stay on the winning side of things, but the Rams will be tested to the fullest on Thursday against a potentially powerful Vikings pass attack that features quarterback Kirk Cousins, wide receivers Stefon Diggs and Adam Thielen and tight end Kyle Rudolph. The Rams will have to dip into their cornerback depth and rely on backups Sam Shields, Nickell Robey-Coleman and Troy Hill, among others. Said head coach Sean McVay, "I think it's going to be a combination. Nickell Robey has played excellent for us this year. Then, I think guys like Sam Shields and Troy Hill will be asked to step up. But we do have confidence that we're going to get those other guys ready to go and they played a lot of meaningful snaps (Sunday). " Meanwhile, an already turbulent week for the Vikings took a distressing turn Monday with the news that defensive end Everson Griffen has had two separate off-field incidents and is being evaluated for mental health concerns. The Vikings were handed an inexplicable 27-6 home loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday and now turn around for Thursday night's game on the road in which the Vikings will travel two time zones to face the undefeated Rams. They traveled to Los Angeles without Griffen, who is at a mental health facility for "evaluation and treatment. " A road game against one of the favorites in the NFC would have been tough enough on a short turnaround, but Griffen has been one of the team's inspirational leaders since he became a full-time starter in 2014. He's tallied 44. 5 sacks in 64 games in that time. Without Griffen, Minnesota has to face a Rams offense that is tied for third in the NFL at 34. 0 points per game. Los Angeles is third in yards with 439. 3 yards per game. Stephen Weatherly, a seventh-round draft pick in 2016, made his first career start in place of Griffen last week and had seven tackles, a sack and two quarterback hits. With Griffen out, Danielle Hunter takes his spot at right end with Weatherly starting on the left side. "Yeah it's a problem," Zimmer said of the Vikings traveling west on a short week. "We haven't had a home game on a short week since I've been here in five years. But it is what it is. You play the schedule how it is. I know the statistics about going to the West Coast on a short week and all that. " Road teams traveling through two time zones are winless in 10 previous Thursday games. The Vikings departed Minneapolis after practice Tuesday, and Zimmer said, "We did a study on preparing for a game on a short week and all those things and that's why we're going out tonight after practice. " Trying to control the Rams defensive line led by Aaron Donald, Ndamukong Suh and Michael Brockers will also be a challenge, as Zimmer acknowledged. The Vikings do hope to have running back Dalvin Cook available. He missed Sunday's game because of a hamstring injury. "Their front guys, obviously Donald and Suh and Brockers, they're get-going-up-the-field guys," Zimmer said. "Suh is explosive, powerful. They get to the spot on the quarterback. And then Donald is the quick, side-to-side (guy) and then use power to get to it. Yeah, it makes it difficult. " Goff has played well, completing better than 70 percent of his passes, and that will also be a challenge for Minnesota's defense. Goff credits his supporting cast. "They're all great," he said. Woody (Woods) getting 10 catches, it was awesome. "very week, it seems like another guy steps up. It kind of cycles. (Sunday) it was Robert, Brandin. Cooper played great. I mean they all played great. It's good to have all three of them and then Todd in the pass game is good as well. "

GAME RECAP
Sep 27, 2018 LOS ANGELES Jared Goff turned a phenomenal first half into the biggest game of his career, and it was still just barely enough to beat Kirk Cousins. Goff passed for career highs of 465 yards and five touchdowns, winning a scintillating duel with his Minnesota counterpart and leading the unbeaten Los Angeles Rams to a 38-31 victory over the Vikings on Thursday night. Goff hit Cooper Kupp with two of his four TD throws during a 251-yard first half in which the third-year quarterback flawlessly executed coach Sean McVay's offense. ''It was just great command by him,'' McVay said about Goff. Todd Gurley then finished with 83 yards rushing and 73 yards receiving while the Rams (4-0) held off the Vikings (1-2-1) and Cousins, who passed for 422 yards and three touchdowns. The Vikings got the ball back with 2:20 left, but Los Angeles rookie John Franklin-Myers stripped Cousins of the ball near midfield. The Rams recovered and ran out the clock on their first win in the franchise's last six meetings with Minnesota. McVay was Cousins' offensive coordinator in Washington before he became Goff's head coach on the West Coast last season. McVay's current and former prize pupils put on a show at the Coliseum, but Goff finished 26 of 33 with a perfect 158. 3 quarterback rating. Goff picked apart the Vikings' secondary in the first half with one pinpoint throw after another. The former No. 1 pick has three consecutive 300-yard games during the Rams' perfect start. Gurley and Brandin Cooks had first-half TD catches. The Vikings trimmed LA's lead to 31-28 late in the third quarter with Adam Thielen's 45-yard TD catch and a 2-point conversion, but Goff promptly surpassed his previous career highs for yards passing during a swift drive ending in Robert Woods' 31-yard TD catch. Both offenses came out firing at the Coliseum in front of a lively Coliseum crowd that included a healthy throng of purple-clad fans enjoying the Vikings' first game in Los Angeles since 1993. One week after giving up 27 points in the first half and getting blown out as 16 1/2-point favorites in Buffalo, the Vikings gave up 28 before halftime against LA. They still hung in with one of the NFL's best offenses thanks to a dynamic game from Cousins, who hit Aldrick Robinson for two first-half scores. Goff found Kupp with two beautiful TD throws in the first half, the first hitting Kupp in stride on a 70-yard sprint , and the second eluding two Vikings and dropping into Kupp's hands deep in the end zone. ''Jared put it in about a 6-inch box that only he could fit it into,'' McVay said. ''He had great command and poise all night. '' Less than 2 1/2 minutes later, Goff hit Cooks down the middle for a 47-yard score. Both of those throws beat Minnesota cornerback Trae Waynes, who missed the second half with a concussion. Goff's four TD passes were the most in a first half by a Rams quarterback since Kurt Warner did it in 1999. Sam Ficken, the replacement for injured Rams All-Pro kicker Greg Zuerlein, kept it close by missing a 28-yard field goal with 8:21 to play. Minnesota's Dan Bailey hit a 40-yard field goal with 3:46 left for the only points of the fourth quarter. GRIFFEN OUTMinnesota defensive end Everson Griffen posted a message on Instagram expressing his gratitude for support from his team and family. Griffen has been away from the Vikings while undergoing a mental health evaluation, and he didn't get to return to the Coliseum, where he starred for USC. Griffen said he doesn't know exactly when he'll be back in uniform, but he plans to ''return as a much-improved person and player. '' INJURY REPORTVikings: RB Dalvin Cook had 20 yards on 10 carries after missing last week's game with a hamstring injury. . . . Thielen appeared to be angry when officials sent him off the field to be checked for a concussion early in the second half. He returned later in the third quarter. Rams: TE Tyler Higbee injured his knee early on. He returned later in the first half. . . . CB Marcus Peters played after injuring his calf last week. UP NEXTVikings: At the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, Oct. 7. Rams: At the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday, Oct. 7. ---More NFL: www. apnews. com/tag/NFL and www. twitter. com/-NFL

GAME PREVIEW
Sep 24, 2018 Quarterback, quarterback, who's going to start at quarterback? That seems to be an issue for both teams as No. 16 Miami and unranked North Carolina meet in a nationally televised contest Thursday. Kickoff is 8 p. m. ET at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens with ESPN handling the telecast. Miami coach Mark Richt is employing a little bit of gamesmanship as to who will start at quarterback for the Hurricanes (3-1, 0-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) in their league opener, and he's not really all that certain who will be behind center for the Tar Heels (1-2, 1-0 ACC). It figures to be junior Nathan Elliott for the Tar Heels, but Richt also has an eye on sophomore Chazz Surratt. Surratt is coming off a three-game suspension and could be making his season debut. Surratt started seven games as a redshirt freshman last year but Elliott finished the season with three starts that resulted in two of Carolina's 2017 wins. Richt doesn't expect there to be a major difference in the duo's performance, but there could be subtleties in their approach. "Every quarterback has a little different skill-set," he said. "Every quarterback has a certain amount of pocket presence, certain amount of running ability, certain amount of accuracy. "I don't think the system would change dramatically, just like no matter who we play, our system is not going to change very much at all. Skill-sets are a little different. They might play one guy different than another. You just have to prepare for what they do. " Considering Elliott is coming off his best game of the young season by far, though, it would be a major shock if he didn't at least open the game. He completed 22 of 31 attempts for 313 yards in Carolina's 38-35 win over Pittsburgh with two touchdowns against no interceptions. "I think Nathan is really hard on himself," Tar Heels coach Larry Fedora said. "He wants to please everybody, he wants to be as good as he can possibly be for his teammates and for the university and for the fans and for everybody. "And so he puts a lot of pressure on himself and I think he probably relaxed a little bit, you know? And just said, you know what, I need to play ball. " Elliott said he felt great coming into the game. "I did a lot of things in the last two weeks to put myself in a better position," he said. "I felt like for the most part I did. I was a lot more accurate. There are still obviously some things to clean up, but I thought it was a good day. " The situation for Miami is more unsettled. Though senior Malik Rosier has started all four games for the Hurricanes, he gave way to redshirt freshman N'Kosi Perry on the third series last week -- the plan going into the game, Richt said -- and Perry delivered. He completed 17 of 25 passes for 224 yards and three touchdowns in engineering the 31-17 victory over Florida International. Rosier never got back into the game. But Richt was non-committal afterward on Perry's future status and remained that way as the Hurricanes began a short week of practices. "I'm going to continue to watch practice and let everybody know when it's time for them to know," Richt said. "But I'm not telling what's happening. " One bit of good news for whoever starts: Wide receiver Jeff Thomas, who has gotten his sophomore season off to a terrific start with 12 catches for 315 yards, 126 yards on three punt returns, and a 25. 8 average on eight kickoff runbacks, was back practicing. Thomas left the FIU game in the first quarter because of dehydration issues on the 87-degree afternoon and did not return. "He looks good," Richt said. But safety Jaquan Johnson and wide receiver Ahmmon Richards missed early week workouts because of knee issues. Their status is day-to-day.

GAME RECAP
Sep 27, 2018 MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. Miami tied a school record with three defensive touchdowns, N'Kosi Perry threw for a score in his first start and the No. 16 Hurricanes downed North Carolina 47-10 on Thursday night. Romeo Finley and Joe Jackson ran back interceptions for scores, Jonathan Garvin scooped up a fumble and rumbled in for another touchdown and the Hurricanes (4-1, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) wound up forcing six turnovers in all. Perry didn't have to do much, completing eight of 12 passes for 125 yards with one touchdown and one interception in his debut as the Miami starter. Deejay Dallas rushed 11 times for 114 yards and a touchdown for the Hurricanes, whose 12th straight home regular-season win matches the school's longest in 15 years. Chazz Surratt, making his season debut after serving a three-game suspension for selling team-issued shoes, relieved North Carolina starting quarterback Nathan Elliott early and rushed for a touchdown for the Tar Heels (1-3, 1-1). But Surratt was intercepted three times, the Tar Heels also fumbled the ball away three times and they were a combined 3 for 16 on third and fourth downs. Miami coach Mark Richt kept everyone guessing on his decision whether to start Perry or incumbent Malik Rosier right up until kickoff. The Hurricanes didn't even list a quarterback on the starting lineups that were shown on the in-stadium video boards shortly before the game. Perry went the whole way, sans for a last-play kneel-down by quarterback Cade Weldon - though Miami's defense was its best offense. The three defensive touchdowns were a first for Miami since a game against West Virginia on Sept. 23, 2000. The Hurricanes became the first ACC team with three defensive scores in a game since Boston College in 2006, and are now one of two teams nationally this season to do so - along with Akron, which did it against Northwestern earlier this month. It was Miami's first time forcing six turnovers in an ACC game since a win over North Carolina State in 2012. THE TAKEAWAYNorth Carolina: The Heels were their own worst enemies. Besides the five turnovers, they had goal-to-go situations twice and came away with a total of three points. A drive to the Miami 3 early in the game netted the field goal, and a drive to the Miami 7 in the third quarter became a third-and-goal from the 31. The result there was a missed 48-yard field goal try. Miami: The Hurricanes' 33 first-half points were their second-most by halftime of any ACC game, but the second half looked very ugly offensively. And a major storyline during Florida State week will be the status of LB Shaquille Quarterman, who appeared to twist an ankle in the first half, returned to start the third quarter - and aggravated the injury early in the third quarter. POLL IMPLICATIONSMiami will remain in the Top 25. The last time Miami was ranked going into three consecutive Octobers was from 2003 through 2005. UP NEXTNorth Carolina: Hosts Virginia Tech on Oct. 13. The Tar Heels had two weeks off because their game against UCF was cancelled because of Hurricane Florence, then played twice in five days, and now have another two-week break. Miami: Hosts Florida State on Oct. 6. The Hurricanes snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Seminoles with a dramatic win last season - and now will try to snap a six-game home slide against their rivals. FSU last lost at Miami in 2004. ---More college football: https://apnews. com/tag/Collegefootball and https://twitter. com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Yankees visit Rays with home wild-card game in sight 4h ago 3 min read The New York Yankees were not able to wrap up home field advantage in the wild card game Wednesday night. But they won even before the game started when Didi Gregorius, feared lost for the season with torn wrist cartilage, was given the OK to resume baseball activities. He is looking to return sometime during the weekend series in Boston."Everybody plays through everything," Gregorius said. "That's why you want to keep going and be out there for the team. As soon as they let me play, I'm going to be in there." While nothing is certain, the hope is the shortstop can play before the end of the regular season."That would be ideal," manager Aaron Boone said. "We'll see how he responds and what the doctors are telling us, and then we'll go from there. Hopefully that means getting him in there this weekend, but we'll just have to wait and see how it all unfolds and how he's able to bounce back from the workload." As far as the game, Neil Walker hit a three-run homer in the first inning but that was it for the Yankee offense until a four-run ninth inning fell a run short in an 8-7 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays. The Yankees magic number for clinching home field for the wild card game remained at two after Oakland defeated Seattle 9-3 later Thursday.CC Sabathia (8-7, 3.77 ERA), who has not had tremendous career success against the Rays, nor in this September, will face Tampa "opener" Jamie Schultz (2-1, 4.55) in the series finale Thursday afternoon.Sabathia, who picked up his 245th career win in his last start and then announced he plans to play next season, is 16-16 with a 3.73 ERA in 47 lifetime starts against the Rays -- 7-9, 3.70 in 23 games at Tropicana Field. He lost back-to-back starts to Tampa Bay in June despite allowing four earned runs in 13 innings. His win against the Red Sox ended a five-game winless streak and he is 1-2 with a 7.02 ERA in September.Sabathia needs to work seven innings Thursday to get to 155 and receive a $500,000 bonus. While the news was good on Gregorius, Gleyber Torres, who sat out Tuesday with groin soreness, didn't start but played Wednesday, while Aaron Hicks (hamstring) remained out. Walker left the game after getting hit on the shin with a pitch. X-rays were negative and he's expected to be fine for Thursday. The news wasn't as good for the Rays, with Kevin Kiermaier, who has had a nightmarish season thanks to injuries, suffered a hairline fracture of his right foot when hit by a Masahiro Tanaka pitch. Matt Duffy also left the game, with a tight quad.Said Kiermaier: "It's just an unfortunate way for me to end the season but that's kind of my 2018 in a nutshell. I feel like everything that could've went wrong for me did.'' Ji-Man Choi, injured in a home plate collision Tuesday, felt much better but was rested -- and will be available Thursday.Tommy Pham's home run to centerfield broke a 3-3 tie, continuing his torrid hitting pace -- he has reached base in 28 straight games and has a 10-game hitting streak (.444), after a 17-gamer was snapped."Offensively, I'm still trying to figure out some things, and I think when I do figure it out, whether it be this year or the offseason -- because it will be figured out before next season -- I think I could truly be the player I think I'm capable of being," Pham said. "I just haven't figured out how to fix myself just yet.'' Duffy is 5-for-9 lifetime against Sabathia, while Carlos Gomez is 9-for-21 with a homer.Tampa Bay's Austin Pruitt is in line to get the bulk of the relief work in Thursday's game, which will decide a season series tied at 9-9.

Sabathia ejected, Yanks rout Rays, near home field vs A's5m ago 3 min read ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. CC Sabathia got his 246th win and moved the New York Yankees closer to hosting next week's AL wild-card game but may have cost himself a $500,000 bonus.Sabathia was ejected from Thursday's 12-1 win over the Rays in the sixth inning for hitting Jesus Sucre on a leg in retaliation for Tampa Bay reliever Andrew Kittredge throwing an inside pitch at Austin Romine. Making his final regular-season start, Sabathia had thrown 55 pitches and the five innings raised his season total to 153 innings - two shy of a $500,000 performance bonus in his contract for reaching 155 innings.New York (98-61) ensured its winningest season since going 103-59 en route to the 2009 World Series title and moved two games ahead of Oakland (96-63) for hosting the Oct. 3 wild-card game. The Yankees hold the tiebreaker, which means more Yankees win or Athletics loss ensures the game would be in the Bronx. The wild-card winner advances to a Division Series against AL East champion Boston.Giancarlo Stanton homered twice, raising his total to 37, and Miguel Andujar and Luke Voit also went deep for the Yankees. New York's 260 homers tied the 2005 Texas Rangers for the second-most in major league history, four behind the 1997 Seattle Mariners. With New York ahead 7-0, Sabathia hit Jake Bauers around a hand with two outs in the fifth.Kittredge threw his initial pitch in the sixth near Romine's head, and plate umpire Vic Carapazza issued a warning to both benches. In the Yankees dugout, an angry Sabathia had to be intercepted by Boone.New York opened an 11-0 lead and Sabathia hit Sucre the lower left leg on his first pitch in the bottom half, causing Carpazza to eject the pitcher and Yankees manager Aaron Boone.Sabathia stared and gestured toward the Tampa Bay side of the field while walking to the Yankees dugout on the third-base side after being tossed. Relievers in both bullpens stood up but the other players remained in the dugouts. The 38-year-old left-hander, likely the Yankees' fourth starter during the postseason, allowed one hit and lowered his ERA to 3.65. He has a $10 million base salary in his one-year contract.Luis Cessa and Jonathan Loaisiga completed a two-hitter, giving New York its third straight series win. Cessa gave up C. J Cron's homer in the seventh.Andujar hit a three-run homer during a four-run first off Jaime Schultz (2-2). Aaron Judge had a sacrifice fly and Voit hit an RBI double in a three-run fourth.New York's four-run sixth included back-to-back solo homers by Voit and Stanton, who had his 32nd multihomer game.Tampa Bay's Tommy Pham walked in the ninth to extend his on-base streak to 29 games, the longest active run in the AL.TRAINER'S ROOMYankees CF Aaron Hicks (left hamstring) should start Friday night and SS Didi Gregorius (right wrist) also could also return during the final regular-season series. Both ran the bases and took batting practice, while Gregorius took grounders. ''Looking good for both of them,'' Boone said. ... GAME PREVIEW
First-place Rockies go for sweep of reeling Phillies 17m ago 3 min read DENVER -- The Colorado Rockies will try to complete a four-game sweep Thursday of the Philadelphia Phillies after trampling them a third straight time as they steam toward the postseason.Rockies starter German Marquez tied a modern major league record Wednesday by striking out the first eight batters of the game, and the Rockies pounded the Phillies 14-0, scoring at least 10 runs for the third successive contest and giving them a 34-4 margin in the series that will end with Colorado's Antonio Senzatela (6-6, 4.52 ERA) opposing Jake Arrieta (10-10, 3.94).The win boosted the Rockies' lead to 1 1/2 games over the stumbling St. Louis Cardinals for the second National League wild-card spot. More importantly, the Rockies took over the lead in the NL West, moving a half-game ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Rockies, who are in their 26th season, are the only team in the NL West to have never won the division. The loss was the season-high seventh straight for the Phillies (78-80), who have allowed double-digit runs in three straight games for the first time since June 1-4, 1958. The Phillies are 6-18 this month and have gone 15-32 since Aug. 5, when their 63-48 record was the second-best in the NL."We're playing really bad baseball right now, really bad baseball," Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said. "There's no excuse for it, none at all, and we all have to look ourselves in the mirror, individually and collectively, and figure out how to be better. We need to do it right now. I think we can fight harder. I think we can grind harder. I think we can push each other harder." The Rockies have won six straight games. Wednesday's win was the Rockies' second-largest victory margin in a shutout in franchise history, trailing only a 16-0 romp against San Diego on Sept. 16, 2017.Outfielder David Dahl, who went 2-for-4, hit his 13th homer -- a three-run shot in the fifth that gave the Rockies a 5-0 lead. Dahl, 24, has homered in a career-high three consecutive games and is batting .309 with six homers and 21 RBI this month. The 10th player taken overall in the 2012 draft, Dahl has endured a slew of injuries, including a broken right foot that sidelined him for two months until early August."I think David has that inner confidence that he can handle it on this stage," Rockies manager Bud Black said. "He understands where we are, and I think there's a confidence that he believes where he is now, where we are as a team, that he's going to be a contributor. He's got a good heartbeat. Obviously, there's a skill set there that plays in a big league game, and he's shone it." Senzatela is 2-0, 1.50 in his past two starts, including Saturday at Arizona when he worked a season-high tying seven innings and allowed three hits and one run in Colorado's 5-1 victory. This will be Senzatela's first start against the Phillies. He has made one relief appearance against them Aug. 4, 2017 at Coors Field, when he gave up three hits and two runs in two innings. The Phillies are 14-16 in starts by Arrieta, who has given up four runs in five of his past six starts and is 1-2, 7.31 in those outings, a stretch of 28 1/3 innings in which he has yielded seven homers. In his last start Saturday at Atlanta, Arrieta pitched a season-low two innings and gave up four hits, four runs and three walks with two strikeouts, throwing 51 pitches and just 28 strikes. He's 2-2, 6.11 in five starts against the Rockies and 0-2, 14.54 in two starts at Coors Field, where he has allowed 22 hits in 8 2/3 innings.

Dahl homers in 4th straight, Rockies open 1-game lead6m ago 2 min read DENVER David Dahl homered for the fourth straight game, and the Colorado Rockies opened a one-game NL West lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday that extended their winning streak to seven.Trevor Story and Gerardo Parra also went deep for the Rockies (89-70), who matched their losing winning streak this season. Dahl hit a run-scoring triple and finished the four-game sweep with eight hits and 11 RBIs.Trying for the first NL West title in team history, Colorado closes at home with three games against Washington and already is assured its winningest season since going 92-70 in 2009.The second-place Dodgers (88-71) also are one game ahead of St. Louis (87-72) for the second NL wild-card berth and finish with a three-game series at San Francisco.Jose Bautista and Carlos Santana homered for the Phillies, outscored 39-7 in the series. Philadelphia (78-81), which struck out 14 times for the second day in a row, has lost a season-high eight straight and has gone 15-33 since moving a season-high 15 games over .500 on Aug. 5. The Phillies are assured their seventh straight season without a winning record, their most since 1994-2000.Scott Oberg (8-1) pitched 1 1/3 hitless innings in relief of Antonio Senzatela, who allowed one run and five hits in 4 2.3 innings. Oberg relieved with two on in the fifth and struck out Carlos Santana, then fanned two in a perfect sixth.Wade Davis gave up Carlos Hernandez's leadoff single in the ninth, struck out J. P. He had a 3.96 ERA, his highest since 2013, in his first season with the Phillies after agreeing to a $75 million, three-year contract on March 12, a month into spring training.Dahl hit his 14th home run in the first and Story hit his 35th in a two-run second that also included a run-scoring wild pitch that followed Andrew Knapp's passed ball.Bautista homered in the third, but the Rockies opened a 5-1 lead in the seventh when Parra homered as a pinch hitter and Dahl tripled.Santana hit a two-run homer in the eighth off Adam Ottavino, who walked Dylan Cozens and struck out his next three batters.TRAINER'S ROOMRockies: LHP Tyler Anderson is to throw a bullpen session Friday to determine whether he will beavailable Sunday as the starter or to come in as a reliever. Anderson had his last start scratched due to shoulder tightness.UP NEXTPhillies: RHP Jerad Eickhoff (0-0, 9.00) is slated to open a three-game series against Atlanta on Friday night.Rockies: LHP Kyle Freeland (16-7, 2.84) starts the series against the Nationals.---More baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball and https://twitter.com/-Sports

Cole goes for sixth straight win as Astros take on O's 9h ago 2 min read BALTIMORE--The defending World Series champion Houston Astros close the 2018 season with a trip to Baltimore this weekend, and the first game of their four-game series with the Orioles is set for Thursday at 7:05 p.m. ET at Camden Yards.Houston already has clinched the American League West and will play the Indians in the Division Series. That starts on Oct. 5, and the Astros get home-field advantage there. The only time Houston would not hold the home-field advantage is if it meets Boston in the AL Championship Series as the Red Sox already have that locked up.David Hess (3-10, 5.14 ERA) will start for the Orioles versus Houston right-hander Gerrit Cole (15-5, 2.92) on Thursday.Cole has given an already-strong Astros' starting staff even more punch this season. He has won five in a row and last lost on Aug. 10. This will be the first time Cole has pitched against the Orioles this season -- and in fact, he's never gone against Baltimore in his career.Hess has been up and down during this rookie season. The right-hander has gone 1-5 in the past two months but pitched effectively on several occasions. This will be the first time he's ever pitched against the Astros.Houston (100-58) is coming off of a 3-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday in a game that really meant nothing. The Astros actually clinched the division total very early Wednesday morning when Oakland lost to Seattle. However, Houston officially celebrated in the locker room after the loss in Toronto, and now will prepare for this four-game series in Baltimore that really holds little meaning except that the Astros want to go into the playoffs on a good note."We're the only team that can repeat, and our team needs to know that," Houston manager AJ Hinch told reporters. "It's important for us to have our moment and lock back in. In a week, we're going to play real baseball." Baltimore is starting the final series of an historically poor season. To make matters worse, the Orioles have run out of pitchers at times, especially in the starting rotation, which is a big reason they went with a committee approach in Wednesday's day-night doubleheader in Boston.Plus, most of the pitchers Baltimore is using do not have a lot of major league experience and are being hit hard as they get used to life at this level."There are better days ahead for those guys," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said of the young pitchers. "But it's a tough learning curve. (However) it's never as bad as it seems or as good as it seems." The Orioles are coming into this series after splitting a day-night doubleheader in Boston on Wednesday. Boston crushed Baltimore 19-3 in the first game -- the biggest margin of defeat the Orioles (46-112) have suffered in this forgetful season. However, Baltimore bounced back and pulled out a 10-3 victory in the nightcap, thanks to seven runs in the final three innings.

Astros-Orioles MLB's 54th ppd of year, most since '892h ago 2 min read BALTIMORE The Houston Astros aren't going to simply go through the motions while closing out the regular season.Houston's game against the Baltimore Orioles on Thursday night was postponed by rain, meaning the Astros will squeeze in four games over the final three days, including a doubleheader on Saturday. The 54 postponements in the major leagues this year are the most since 58 in 1989, the commissioner's office said.Houston will squeeze in four games over the final three days, including a doubleheader on Saturday. Not a problem for the AL West champions, who open the Division Series on Oct. 5 at home against Cleveland.Gerritt Cole (15-5), who was slated to start Thursday, will instead pitch Friday night. Justin Verlander (16-9) will start the opener on Saturday (the makeup of Thursday's rainout) and Dallas Keuchel (12-11) will pitch in the nightcap.''It's important to them to get their regular work because we'll have a week off,'' manager A. J. Hinch said. ''There are also personal goals. Gerrit is trying to get 200 innings and Justin is still in consideration for the Cy Young.'' The Astros have already clinched the second seed in the AL, already have 100 wins and need only to avoid injury through the weekend. But they can't afford to lose their focus, even against the worst team in the major leagues.''I have stressed to them not to get sloppy,'' Hinch said. ''You don't want to play like it's spring training, then go have to go back into playoff mode.'' Simply put, winning is still important.''I don't want them to get into bad habits,'' Hinch said. ''We have to play the games and you have to keep your edge. You can't not compete.'' Hinch said his starters will continue to see action, even if it's for just part of the game.Josh Reddick, Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman and Carlos Correa were among those in the starting lineup Thursday. The Orioles, meanwhile, are just striving to reach the finish line of the worst season in franchise history. Baltimore 46-112.TRAINER'S ROOMAstros: The wife of RHP Charlie Morton gave birth to a girl on Thursday. Morton could pitch the regular-season finale on Sunday.Orioles: RHP Miguel Castro (knee) remains sidelined. His status for this series is uncertain.UP NEXTAstros: Cole is 5-0 over his last seven starts. He stands 5 2/3 innings short of reaching 200 for the season.Orioles: Rookie David Hess (3-10, 5.14 ERA) starts Friday night. GAME PREVIEW
Braves, minus Swanson, conclude series with Mets 12m ago 3 min read NEW YORK -- The New York Mets head into Thursday hoping the Michael Conforto and Jason Vargas they have seen recently will be the Conforto and Vargas they will see in 2019. The Atlanta Braves are just hoping they will see Dansby Swanson next week. The Mets and Braves play each other for the last time this season Thursday night in the finale of a three-game series at Citi Field. New York evened the series Wednesday, when Jacob deGrom put a bow on his Cy Young Award candidacy by earning the win with eight scoreless innings of two-hit ball in a 3-0 victory. The left-handed Vargas (6-9, 6.25 ERA) is scheduled to oppose Braves right-hander Julio Teheran (9-8, 4.03) on Thursday. While the National League East champion Braves (89-69) would like to see Teheran pitch well as they try to figure out whether he will serve as their fourth starter in the NL Division Series, their more immediate concern is Swanson, a slick-fielding shortstop who left Tuesday's 7-3 victory in the second inning with what was diagnosed Wednesday as a torn ligament in his left wrist.Swanson, who missed time earlier this season with inflammation in the same wrist, flew to Atlanta on Wednesday and is expected to rehab there over the next several days."It sounded like a situation that we'll know a little better where he's at in a couple days, once they treat him up good and see," Braves manager Brian Snitker said following Wednesday's game. "I know Dansby's going to try like hell to get back." Snitker said the best-case scenario would have Swanson ready to swing the bat in games early next week. The NLDS is scheduled to start Oct. 4."Maybe towards the first of next week or whatever -- we treat him, he's good maybe fire him down to Instructional League and let him take live at-bats," Snitker said. "I think it's just going to be a day-to-day thing and we'll know more and talk to the doctor in a couple days." There will be no baseball for the Mets (74-84) after Sunday's season finale against the Miami Marlins, but the recent surges for Vargas and Conforto have given New York reason for optimism heading into next season.Conforto doubled and scored the Mets' first run in the sixth inning Wednesday before hitting his career-high 28th homer, a long solo shot, in the ninth. The 25-year-old outfielder, who barely worked out last winter while he was recovering from a left shoulder injury and opened this season on the disabled list, is hitting .282 with 17 homers and 52 RBIs since the All-Star break. He hit .216 with 11 homers and 30 RBIs prior to the All-Star Break.Vargas, whose spring training was shortened when he suffered a broken right hand after being hit by a comebacker March 16, is 4-1 with a 3.11 ERA in his last seven starts. He was 2-8 with an 8.75 ERA in his first 12 outings."Vargas rebounded very nicely, Conforto's rebounded very well and they're performing better now," Mets manager Mickey Callaway said Wednesday afternoon. "It's a tough thing to not have a spring training and to kind of do that stuff during the season, but it's probably made both of them mentally stronger because they had to do it." Vargas didn't factor into the decision in his most recent start Friday, when he gave up two runs over 5 2/3 innings in the Mets' 5-4, 12-inning win over the Washington Nationals.Teheran also didn't factor into the decision Friday, when he allowed four runs over 6 1/3 innings as the Braves beat the Philadelphia Phillies 6-5.Vargas is 1-2 with a 5.60 ERA in five career games (four starts) against the Braves. That includes his 1-2 record and 6.14 ERA in three starts against Atlanta this year.Teheran is 9-6 with a 2.42 ERA in 24 career games (23 starts) against the Mets, a team he has faced more than any other team. He tossed his lone big league one-hitter at Citi Field on June 19, 2016, when Conforto's third-inning single accounted for New York's lone baserunner in Atlanta's 6-0 win. This season Teheran is 1-1 with a 1.69 ERA in four starts against the Mets.

Teheran sharp in playoff audition, Braves fall to Mets 4-17m ago 2 min read NEW YORK Julio Teheran looked sharp in his last audition to become part of Atlanta's playoff rotation, pitching two-hit ball for six innings Thursday night in the Braves' 4-1 loss to the New York Mets. The NL East champion Braves didn't start first baseman Freddie Freeman and center fielder Ender Inciarte, and they were minus injured shortstop Dansby Swanson for the second straight game.Jason Vargas (7-9) tossed seven shutout innings in his best start of the season for the Mets. He helped New York blank the Braves for the second day in a row.Teheran (9-9) allowed one run, struck out five and walked two, exciting with a 1-0 deficit. His final regular-season start came exactly a week before the Braves are set to begin the postseason.Teheran won just one of his last 10 outings while often throwing better than his record indicated. The 27-year-old righty started for the Braves the previous time they made the playoffs in 2013 and has long been a key piece of their staff, but his place this October is uncertain.Manager Brian Snitker hasn't said who will pitch when in the playoffs. Mike Foltynewicz, Kevin Gausman and Anibal Sanchez are considered likely to lock down the first three starts in the best-of-five NL Division Series, perhaps leaving Teheran and Sean Newcomb to compete for the fourth spot.Teheran gave up a leadoff double to Brandon Nimmo in the first and a home run to Kevin Plawecki in the fourth.Pinch-hitter Devin Mesoraco connected for a three-run homer off Brad Brach in the seventh that made it 4-0.Ronald Acuna Jr. hit an RBI single in the eighth. The Braves beat New York in the opener of this three-game series for their sixth straight win. But Mets starters Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom and Vargas combined for 21 scoreless innings in the set, and New York finished 6-13 against Atlanta this year.Vargas gave up three hits, walked none and struck out six, pitching in light rain in the later innings. The 35-year-old lefty tied for the major league lead with 18 wins last season with Kansas City but struggled after signing a $16 million, two-year deal with the Mets.Robert Gsellman worked the ninth for his 13th save. He struck out Freeman with two on to end it.WRIGHT YOU AREMets third baseman David Wright didn't play despite scattered chants of ''We want David!'' Activated this week, he hasn't played in the majors since May 2016 because of neck, back and shoulder injuries. The Mets have planned for him to start Saturday night at Citi Field against Miami. The 35-year-old team captain left a spirited reminder of his days in the clubhouse before the game. A bottle of tequila was put in each teammate's locker, with his No. 5 and the message, ''Thanks for the memories.'' TRAINER'S ROOMBraves: No update on Swanson, diagnosed this week with a partially torn ligament in his left hand. A progress report is possible over the weekend. Swanson's status remains uncertain for Atlanta's playoff opener next Thursday. Charlie Culberson again took Swanson's place.UP NEXTBraves: Foltynewicz (12-10, 2.88 ERA) starts Friday night at Philadelphia in final series of the regular season. Last Saturday, he took a no-hit bid into the seventh inning against the Phillies in the division clincher.Mets: RHP Corey Oswalt (3-3, 6.08) starts at home vs. RHP Jose Urena (8-12, 4.07) and the Marlins.---More baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball and https://twitter.com/-Sports

Cubs sticking with it, seek series split with Pirates 3h ago 2 min read CHICAGO -- Just when it appeared the Chicago Cubs' offense had run out of bats with the two-time defending National League Central Division champions on the verge of falling out of first place, the Cubs showed their sticks still have some life.A 7-6, extra-inning victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday capped by Albert Almora, Jr.'s two-out single in the 10th inning allowed the Cubs to preserve their half-game margin for the divisional lead. The Cubs will attempt to move closer to their third straight Central crown when they wrap up their four-game series against the Pirates on Thursday. The Cubs also clinched a playoff berth Wednesday. The seven-run explosion arrived after the Cubs had struggled to score runs against the Pirates. After dropping the first two games of the series when the Cubs managed only two runs, Chicago gave its pitching staff some run support and pulled out the win after the bullpen blew a 6-1 lead."There's no pressure, no panic," Almora said in a postgame televised interview. Now, they'll look to continue the trend Thursday."If we could just get on the board early, that would be very helpful," Cubs manager Joe Maddon told reporters Wednesday."If we get a chance to get on (Pirates) starters early, we need to do that because they seem to get better games in progress." With a win Thursday, the Cubs will earn a series split and create a bit more distance between themselves and the idle second-place Milwaukee Brewers, who clinched their first playoff berth since 2011 on Wednesday. Milwaukee finished off a sweep of the St. Louis Cardinals with a 2-1 victory Wednesday. The Cubs hope to get third baseman Kris Bryant back in the lineup after Bryant missed Wednesday's game with a sore wrist. Bryant left Tuesday night's game after being hit by a pitch and sustaining a wrist contusion. Maddon told reporters that the swelling wasn't as bad as expected, but that it was enough to keep Bryant from playing.Jon Lester (17-6, 3.43 ERA) takes the mound hoping to give the Cubs some momentum heading into another tough test this weekend against the Cardinals. Lester has won three of his four September starts and has allowed five earned runs in the four outings. Lester is 8-6 with 3.38 ERA in 17 career starts against the Pirates, including 3-1, 3.72 in five outings this season.Trevor Williams (14-9, 3.04) will take the mound for the Pirates. Williams has also been impressive throughout September and has won three of his four starts with a no-decision. Williams has not allowed an earned run in three of his four starts and has struck out seven in each of his past two outings. Williams is 2-3 with a 3.41 ERA in seven career outings (five starts) against the Cubs, including 1-1, 1.38 in two turns this season.Williams has been among the Pirates' most effective performers in the second half but has done so while not gaining much notoriety for his efforts. While he isn't flashy or doesn't overpower hitters with his approach, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said Williams is one to simply get the job done."It's pitchability, it's pitch execution," Hurdle told reporters earlier this month, according to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "He's hitting spots. He's throwing his fastball where he wants. He's changing speeds. And it's really hard to hit. He's getting it done the old-fashioned way. He's flat-out pitching."

GAME PREVIEW
Twins host Tigers, reflect on disappointing season 4h ago 3 min read The Minnesota Twins had high hopes for the season after a surprising run to the American League wild-card game in 2017.They made a flurry of moves during an otherwise quiet offseason, adding Jake Odorizzi and Lance Lynn to a rotation that already included Kyle Gibson and Jose Berrios, and banked on improvement from younger talents such as Miguel Sano.None of those paid off the way Minnesota hoped. The Twins will miss the playoffs this season after a series of frustrations and setbacks, especially a rash of injuries.Byron Buxton, Ervin Santana and Miguel Sano were all expected to play big roles in 2018 but spent significant time on the disabled list while Jorge Polanco missed 80 games for a PED suspension. The personnel shortage led to the Twins dealing veterans Brian Dozier, Eduardo Escobar, Zach Duke, Fernando Rodney and Lynn at the deadline to restock the system with young talent.Manager Paul Molitor admits the shortage was frustrating but refuses to use it as an excuse."You don't ever want to sound like we're making excuses," Molitor said. "Every team has to deal with certain things along the way. We had some things that went not according to plan, and we had to make adjustments. Sometimes we did well and sometimes not so well."I think our guys learned, they're continuing to learn. There was an obvious fallback from last year what we were able to do, so expectations weren't met, but I still try to look for positives." Molitor will again turn to an opener Thursday when the Twins wrap up a three-game series with Detroit at Target Field in Minneapolis.Left-hander Gabriel Moya will fill the role for the sixth time this season and a fourth time against the Tigers, who haven't scored a run on him. Moya has six strikeouts in six innings while allowing three hits and two walks versus Detroit in 2018.The Tigers rolled 11-4 on Wednesday, roughing up Odorizzi for four runs and six hits while benefiting from five walks in three-plus innings."Truth be told, I'll probably forget about 2018 tomorrow," Odorizzi told reporters. "I'm going to focus on next year, improving and getting back to the pitcher I am and that this team deserves."Take the good from this season. I made all my starts. I remained healthy. It was by no means a year that I'm proud of, but a year that I learned a lot from. So if I can make the adjustments next year and stay healthy, I'm in for a lot better and will show the fans a lot better too." Another lefty, rookie Stephen Gonsalves, will serve as the primary pitcher while the Tigers turn to former Twins left-hander Francisco Liriano in what might be his final appearance as a Tiger.Lirano has recorded three consecutive quality starts, though he allowed three unearned runs over six innings in a loss to the Royals on Friday.Minnesota's Logan Forsythe is in a 1-for-18 slump but is 7-for-12 in his career versus Liriano.Molitor won his 300th game Wednesday against 343 losses since becoming manager in 2015."It snuck up on me a little bit," Molitor said. "Didn't realize it until Joe Mauer acknowledged it after the game, which was nice. I guess baseball likes round numbers. Would like to get to 300 wins already before you have seen 300 losses, but that hasn't been the case. Keep moving forward." The Twins won 10 of the first 18 meetings this season and have already wrapped up their second consecutive season series victory.

He also added a two-run double in the fifth.Minnesota took two of three against Detroit in the final series between the teams this year. The Twins won the season series 12-7.Tigers starter Francisco Liriano (5-12) left after just 2 1/3 innings due to lower back tightness. The former Twin exited with the bases loaded and wound up being charged with four runs.Austin tied the game in the third with a double that scored Joe Mauer and Logan Forsythe. He also plated Forsythe in the fifth inning with a ground-rule double.Astudillo has quickly become a fan favorite since debuting in late June. Gonsalves was tagged for a pair of runs on three hits and four walks but earned his second career win.TRAINER'S ROOMTwins: Manager Paul Molitor didn't sound optimistic that 3B Miguel Sano (leg) would return in the team's final few games this season. ''Each day it's looking less and less,'' Molitor said. ''He's not really changing how he's feeling, and I'm certainly not going to be someone to push him out there if he's not comfortable playing.'' GAME PREVIEW
Indians wrap up regular season with series vs. Royals 2h ago 2 min read In a pitching matchup that is common in many major league games in September, two relief pitchers will start Thursday night as the Cleveland Indians and Kansas City Royals play the opener of a regular season-ending four-game series at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City.Cleveland's Josh Tomlin (2-5, 6.44 ERA) will face Kansas City's Glenn Sparkman (0-3, 4.86). The two American League Central Division teams are a study in extremes. The Indians (89-69) have won the division for the third consecutive year while the Royals (56-102) are in last place.Tomlin, 33, made six early-season starts before being moved to the bullpen. In 23 relief appearances, he is 2-2 with a 4.55 ERA. In eight starts, he is 0-3, 7.82.Tomlin's last appearance was a relief stint against Boston on Sunday in which he pitched two scoreless innings, allowing one hit and picking up the win in a 4-3 Cleveland victory. His last start came Sept. 20, against the White Sox when he got a no-decision in a 5-4 Indians loss. In that game, Tomlin pitched four innings, allowing four runs and eight hits, with two strikeouts and no walks.Tomlin's only appearance against the Royals this year was as a reliever Aug. 25, when he pitched one inning, giving up one run and three hits, with no strikeouts and no walks. The last time Tomlin started a game against the Royals was Sept. 14, 2017, when he got a no-decision in a 3-2 Indians win. In that game he pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing two runs and six hits, with four strikeouts and one walk.In 26 career appearances (21 starts) against Kansas City, Tomlin is 10-5 with a 3.93 ERA.Sparkman is at the other end of the career spectrum from Tomlin, who during his nine-year career has appeared in 182 major league games. The 26-year-old Sparkman has appeared in 16 major league games, mostly as a reliever. In 12 relief appearances for the Royals this year he is 0-2 with a 4.62 ERA. He has made two starts and is 0-1, 5.63. His last appearance came as a reliever in an 11-8 Royals' loss to Detroit in which he received no decision. He pitched four innings, allowing two runs and five hits.Sparkman's last start was a 4-1 loss to Tampa Bay on Aug. 21. He pitched four innings, giving up three runs and seven hits, with five strikeouts and three walks.Thursday will be his first career appearance against Cleveland.A big challenge for Sparkman will be Cleveland designated hitter Edwin Encarnacion, who after hitting 38 home runs with 107 RBIs last year in his first season with Cleveland, has hit 32 homers with 105 RBIs this year. Encarnacion has driven in at least 100 runs in six of the last seven years, including the last four years in a row."As long as he stays healthy, you can pencil him in for 100 every year," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "That's nice to know, at the start of the season, that you're going get 100 RBIs out of him." Cleveland leads the season series 10-5.

Perez's single in 10th gives Royals 2-1 win over Indians7m ago 2 min read KANSAS CITY, Mo. Salvador Perez slashed a two-out RBI single in the 10th inning to give the Kansas City Royals a 2-1 victory over the Cleveland Indians on Thursday night.Neil Ramirez (0-3) retired the first two hitters in the 10th before he walked Aldaberto Mondesi, who stole second and third to reach 30 steals on the season. Alex Gordon also walked before Perez hit Ramirez's first pitch into left field to score Mondesi for the walk-off win.Mondesi also homered for the Royals (57-102), who are no longer in danger of matching the franchise record of 106 losses, set in 2005.Jason Hammel (4-14) worked a scoreless 10th, following three Kansas City relievers who pitched four scoreless innings. The AL Central champion Indians (89-70) got their only run in the first. Francisco Lindor led off with a single, took second on a botched pickup attempt and went to third on a balk by Royals starter Glenn Sparkman. Lindor scored on Jose Ramirez's one-out sacrifice fly.Sparkman worked a career-high five innings, allowing five hits with no walks and two strikeouts.Josh Tomlin went 4 2/3 innings for the Indians, allowing Mondesi's homer in the third. The Indians had runners at second and third with two out in the eighth when Yandy Diaz chopped a slow roller between third baseman Hunter Dozier and shortstop Mondesi, who made a quick scoop and an off-balance throw to get Diaz.HITS LEADERThe Royals' Whit Merrifield had two hits and moved into the major league lead with 188, one ahead of Atlanta's Freddie Freeman. Merrifield has 53 multi-hit games on the season.TRAINER'S ROOMRoyals: The Royals are healthy except for four players on the long-term disabled list - 3B Cheslor Cuthbert (strained lower back), OF Jorge Soler (fractured toe), RHP Jesse Hahn (elbow surgery) and RHP Nate Karns (elbow inflammation). LHP Danny Duffy (shoulder inflammation) also has been shut down for the season.Indians: INF Erik Gonzalez entered the concussion protocol after getting hit in the head by a pitch against the White Sox on Wednesday. Manager Terry Francona said Gonzalez experienced some nausea after getting beaned, but ''is doing much, much better.'' Gonzalez traveled with the team but there is no timetable for his return. ... 1B Yonder Alonso got the day off. ... Francona said OF Michael Brantley, who left Tuesday's game after fouling a pitch off his right calf and then returned to the lineup Wednesday, sat for his regular day off and has no lingering effects.UP NEXTIndians RHP Mike Clevinger (12-8, 3.07 ERA) will make his final start of the regular season opposite Royals RHP Ian Kennedy (3-8, 4.59) as Francona gets his rotation set for the playoffs.---More MLB: https://apnews.com/tag/MLB and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Haniger enjoys life at top as Mariners host Rangers 19m ago 2 min read Mitch Haniger might not be a prototypical leadoff hitter. But his statistics since moving into the top spot for the Seattle Mariners indicate he might stay there. The 27-year-old outfielder, who made his first All-Star Game this summer, has hit .333 in 41 games in the leadoff role, with eight homers and 19 RBIs since replacing Dee Gordon, who was hobbled by a broken toe."He does it a little differently," Mariners manager Scott Servais said. "More the George Springer/Mookie Betts type where there's real pop at the top of the lineup, which isn't your traditional leadoff guy. I like having him there and it's been really good for our offense. The consistency he's had, just on his approach, has been really good from that spot." Haniger and the Mariners will open their final series of the season Thursday when they host the Texas Rangers. In Haniger's first game at the top of the order in the major leagues, he went 4-for-5 with two doubles and a leadoff home run in the first inning off Houston's Justin Verlander."It's the same approach," Haniger said. "Nothing changes. I've batted leadoff in college and the minor leagues. I've always liked it, but I really don't care where I hit. It doesn't really matter to me. As long as there are hits, it's fine." The Mariners (86-72) have a winning record against every team in the AL West this season except one -- the last-place Rangers (66-92), who are 8-7 against Seattle.Rangers rookie right-hander Ariel Jurado (4-5, 6.66 ERA) is scheduled to start the opener of the four-game series against Mariners left-hander Marco Gonzales (13-9, 4.12).Jurado beat the Mariners 8-3 on Friday with five innings of relief, entering after Connor Sadzeck pitched a scoreless first inning. Jurado allowed two runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.Gonzales is 3-1 with a 3.97 ERA in four career starts against the Rangers. He's 2-1 versus them this season, including a 13-0 victory Saturday in which he allowed one hit in six innings, with one walk and three strikeouts.Rangers outfielder Joey Gallo reached a couple milestones Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels as he hit his 40th home run, becoming the fourth player in franchise history to reach that total in consecutive seasons. In his next at-bat, Gallo struck out for the 200th time this season, the most in Rangers history."I'm trying to get better (at making contact), and I feel like I have gotten better, but that's me. That's what I kind of bring to the table," Gallo said. "When they make their pitch, they're probably going to get me, but when they make a mistake, that's when I have to be on my game and hit that pitch and be ready for it." Interim manager Don Wakamatsu greeted Gallo when he returned to the dugout after his home run."People don't know about his sense of humor," Wakamatsu said. "He came in after that 40th one and I said, 'We got it Joey.' He said, 'Good, well maybe I don't have to play the rest of the year.' It's just his dry sense of humor. But he doesn't know how good he can be."

GAME RECAP
Rangers break through in seventh, beat Mariners 2-08m ago 3 min read SEATTLE First baseman Ronald Guzman broke a tie with an RBI single in the seventh inning, and the Texas Rangers snapped a three-game losing streak with a 2-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday night.Guzman hammered reliever Zach Duke's sinking fastball into the right-center gap, scoring Ryan Rua, who reached base on a one-out double.Guzman scored after right-hander Shawn Armstrong plunked Isiah Kiner-Falefa in the helmet with the bases loaded later in the inning.Ariel Jurado (5-5) threw six scoreless innings, giving up just two hits and striking out three to win back-to-back starts against the Mariners in a six-day span. He won with five innings of two-run relief in an 8-3 victory on Sept. 21 in Arlington, Texas.Hard-throwing Jose Leclerc collected his 12th save with a spotless ninth inning, and has not been scored upon in his past 21 appearances, dating to July 28 (span of 21 innings). It is the second-longest scoreless streak in the major leagues behind Minnesota's Taylor Rogers (23 2/3 innings).Duke (5-5) gave up two runs in two-thirds of an inning after Seattle starter Marco Gonzales held the Rangers scoreless for five innings, giving up two hits and striking out six.Texas has won five of its past six games against the Mariners. It was Seattle's seventh shutout loss of the season.HANIGER JOINS AL ELITEIn his second full season with the Mariners, Mitch Haniger ranks eighth among AL position players with a Wins Above Replacement (WAR) of 6.0.It is the highest of any Seattle outfielder since 2009 when Franklin Gutierrez finished with a 6.6. The other two Seattle outfielders with a 6.0 WAR or better were Ken Griffey Jr. (six times) and Ichiro Suzuki (two).''I'm not surprised really by anything he's done because the work ethic, the discipline and structure he has,'' Seattle manager Scott Servais said. ''He's as good as anyone.'' LONG WAIT OVERRight-hander Adrian Sampson figured his first Safeco Field start would be with the hometown Mariners, the team that traded for him in 2015.But after a season-ending elbow injury on the road with the Mariners in 2016, he was released. And now with Texas, he has worked his way back to the big leagues, first as a reliever and now a late-season starter. His final appearance is Saturday.''It is a good story,'' said Sampson, who is from nearby Redmond, Washington. ''I have come a long ways, and to have this be the last start after the ups and downs earlier this year . to finish here is big for me.'' ROSTER RESHUFFLINGMariners: Servais confirmed LHP James Paxton will make his final start Saturday, but declined to name a starter for the season finale Sunday.TRAINER'S ROOMRangers: 3B Adrian Beltre (hip) was held out Thursday, but interim manager Don Wakamatsu expects the four-time All Star to serve as the designated hitter for the next two games before deciding if he plays in the field in the season finale Sunday. ''We will honor whatever he wants,'' Wakamatsu said.Mariners: OF Denard Span (leg) and INF/OF Dee Gordon (toe) were held out of the starting lineup Thursday, but Servais thinks they will be available for the final three games. Span did fly out to center field as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning.UP NEXTRangers: LHP Martin Perez (2-6, 6.13 ERA) wraps up his worst season as a professional. He seeks his eighth career win against the Mariners, which would tie Oakland for his most against any opponent.Mariners: LHP Wade LeBlanc (8-5, 3.55 ERA) has one final chance to win a career-best ninth game in a season. He won eight games in 2010 with San Diego. It will also be his 27th start for Seattle, which will be a career high. LeBlanc took the loss Sunday against the Rangers.---More baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball
