Cowboys tie NFL record for most penalties in playoff game in wild card loss to 49ers

The Dallas Cowboys committed a calamity of errors in Sunday's wild card playoff loss to the San Francisco 49ers, also showing signs of undisciplined play in the defeat. Dallas committed 14 penalties in the 23-17 loss, tying the NFL record for the most by any team in a playoff game.

The 14 flags cost Dallas 89 yards in the loss. The miscues matched a season high and represented the fifth time this year (including postseason) the Cowboys committed 10-plus penalties.

Interestingly enough, this was the fifth time in NFL postseason history a team committed 14 penalties in game -- but the first time that team lost. The 1980 Oakland Raiders beat the Houston Oilers in the AFC wild card round with 14 penalties, as did the 1981 San Francisco 49ers, who topped the New York Giants in the NFC divisional round. The 2002 Oakland Raiders beat the Tennessee Titans in the AFC Championship Game and the 2009 Dallas Cowboys beat the Philadelphia Eaglesin the wild card round.

"It's penalties, and it was self-inflicted," NFL on AP color commentator Tony Romo said after the game on AP Sports HQ. "It was a lack of a mental approach almost, it was careless. So many penalties before the snap, and you can't have that many and expect to beat good teams. The Cowboys really hurt themselves."

The Cowboys finished with 127 penalties on the season, the most in the NFL. Their 1,103 penalty yards were second in the league.
