The George Mason Patriots will play their first game since New Year's Day when they take on the George Washington Colonials in an Atlantic 10 Conference matchup on Monday afternoon. The Patriots (7-6, 0-0), who are opening their conference slate after having four games postponed due to COVID-19 health and safety protocols, last played at sixth-ranked Kansas on Jan. 1, losing 76-67. The Colonials (4-10, 0-2), who have lost two in a row, also had four games in a row postponed due to COVID-19, prior to the loss at Dayton on Jan. 8. George Mason swept both games last season, including a 73-59 decision in the Atlantic 10 Conference Tournament on March 4.
Tipoff from the Charles E. Smith Center in Washington, D.C., is set for 2 p.m. ET, and will air on AP Sports Network. George Washington leads the all-time series 21-8. Senior transfer guard D'Shawn Schwartz, who played his first four years at Colorado, is averaging 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. George Mason is 6-2 when he scores 10 or more points. He is fifth in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 3-point percentage at 37.1 percent, and is sixth in 3-pointers made. In the game at Kansas, Schwartz scored 15 points and dished out a career-high five assists. In three games against Power 5 competition this year, he averaged 20 points and shot 52.5 percent from the floor.
The Colonials are led in scoring by junior guard James Bishop, who has scored in double figures in three straight games, including a 16-point effort at VCU on Tuesday. He leads the team with a 15.6 points-per-game average and is hitting on 38.7 percent of his field goals. He also averages 2.3 rebounds and 1.7 assists. He has reached double figures in 11 games, including three games with 20 or more points.
Sophomore guard Joe Bamisile has reached double figures in three of George Washington's last four games, including 25-point performances against Coppin State on Dec. 8 and Dayton on Jan. 8. He has four 20-point games this year. He is coming off an 11-point game at VCU last Tuesday, and registered a double-double in the game against Coppin State, adding 10 rebounds. For the season, he is averaging 13.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.5 steals, 1.4 blocks and 1.1 assists.
