Marshall shocks No. 8 Notre Dame for first top-10 win since 2003 as Fighting Irish start 0-2

Marshall stunned No. 8 Notre Dame on Saturday 26-21 in South Bend, Indiana, in one of the most shocking upsets of the 2022 season. The Thundering Herd, which were three-touchdown underdogs heading into the matchup, got a three-yard touchdown pass from Henri Colombi tight end Devin Miller to cap off an 11-play, 94-yard to take a 19-15 lead with just over five minutes to play. Steven Gilmore picked off Tyler Buchner on the next drive and took it 37 yards the other way to make it a 26-15 game.

Notre Dame marched down the field, but quarterback Tyler Buchner left the game with an injury on the drive after throwing the pick six. Backup Drew Pyne was picked off by Owen Porter at Marshall's 19-yard line, which iced the game away.'

Marshall running back Khalan Laborn, a transfer from Florida State, rushed for 163 yards and and one touchdown on 31 carries, and was the centerpiece of a Thundering Herd offense that scored on all four of their red zone attempts and averaged 5.2 sack-adjusted rushing yards per carry.'

It's Marshall's first win over a top-10 team since since Sept. 20, 2003, when it topped then-No. 6 Kansas State 27-20. The last Power Five opponent the Thundering Herd topped was Purdue, when it topped the Boilermakers 41-31.'

Counting last season's Fiesta Bowl, Marcus Freeman is now 0-3 as the head coach of the Fighting Irish. That makes him the first Irish coach to ever start 0-3 and the first to open a season with two straight losses since Lou Holtz in 1986.
