Patriots sign OT Calvin Anderson, release veteran QB Hoyer

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) - The Patriots added some depth on the offensive line with the signing of tackle Calvin Anderson on Thursday.

The team also released veteran quarterback Brian Hoyer, ending his third stint in New England.

It's a bit of a homecoming for Anderson. The 26-year-old spent the past four seasons in Denver, but originally signed as a rookie free agent with the Patriots in 2019 before being released. He was briefly with the Jets before being signed by Denver, where he appeared in 41 games with 12 starts.

Anderson has experience on both the left and right side of the line and could be a candidate to earn a starting spot with Isaiah Wynn's status up in the air as an unsigned free agent.

The 37-year-old Hoyer also signed as an undrafted free agent with the Patriots in 2009 and spent his first three seasons in New England. He returned near the end of the 2017 season and was on the roster throughout the 2018 season. He returned for his most recent stint in 2020.

His 14 NFL seasons have also included stops in Arizona (2012), Pittsburgh (2012), Cleveland (2013-14), Houston (2015), Chicago (2016), San Francisco (2017) and Indianapolis (2019).

Hoyer made a total of 30 starts in New England, including two starts. Overall, he's appeared in 76 regular-season games with 40 starts, completing 902 of 1,518 passes for 10,688 yards, 53 touchdowns and 35 interceptions.
