It is also possible it might not be the Twins who are the visiting team in the elimination game.New York (82-67) is four games ahead of the Twins for the first wild card. The Twins hold a two-game lead on the Los Angeles Angels for the second spot. The division also remains an option for the Yankees, who are three games behind the Boston Red Sox in the AL East. The division title is no longer available for the Twins after the Cleveland Indians clinched the AL Central on Saturday. The Yankees, who are 12-5 in their past 17 games, play 10 of their remaining 13 games at home. The Twins, 7-4 in their past 11 games, play 10 of their final 13 games on the road, where they are 39-32."We're facing a tough trip," Minnesota manager Paul Molitor said. "You go on the road in mid- to late September and have to play 10 games, it's going to present its challenges. You combine where we are at with that." New York hit 12 homers and scored 34 runs while taking three of four from the Baltimore Orioles. The Yankees nearly completed the four-game sweep, but Gary Sanchez struck out in the ninth representing the go-ahead run in a 6-4 loss Sunday."You lose today, on the day that the Red Sox lose, but I mean we're continuing to play well, even on a day that we lose," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We have an opportunity in the ninth inning, and that's what you want. We just need to continue to play well." The Twins head into their trip after rallying from a five-run deficit in a 12-7 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Sunday. Minnesota scored seven times in the second inning and hit four homers overall.Minnesota has homered in 16 straight games for the second this season to tie a club record. The streak is occurring while second-leading home run hitter Miguel Sano (28 homers) is recovering from a left leg injury.Eddie Rosario hit two homers Sunday, raising his total to 26. He has 15 homers and 36 RBIs in his past 39 games.Jaime Garcia, who made one start for the Twins before being acquired by the Yankees, will attempt to get his first win for New York on Monday. Garcia is 0-2 with a 4.60 ERA in six starts for New York. The left-hander came close to getting a victory Wednesday when he allowed one run on five hits in 4 2/3 innings in New York's 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays at Citi Field. Garcia was replaced when he needed one out to qualify for a win, as Girardi wanted to have him avoid facing Evan Longoria for the third time.Garcia (5-9, 4.35 ERA overall) will be making his second start in the past 20 days. Before Wednesday, his last start was five innings in a 2-1 loss to the Indians on Aug. 30.He is making his second career start against the Twins. Garcia faced them June 18, 2015, in Minnesota for the St. Louis Cardinals. He tossed six scoreless innings in a no-decision during a game decided by Kennys Vargas hitting a ninth-inning, game-winning home for the Twins.Ervin Santana, who might start a wild-card game for Minnesota, will oppose Garcia, trying to become the eighth 16-game winner in the majors. He also is two away from his career best for wins set in 2010 for the Los Angeles Angels. The right-hander is 4-0 with a 3.53 ERA in his last 10 starts since July 21. He took a no-decision Wednesday after allowing three hits in six innings during Minnesota's 3-1 win over the San Diego Padres.Santana (15-7, 3.35 ERA) is 6-9 with a 5.78 ERA in 19 career starts against the Yankees. GAME RECAP
Judge hits No. 44, Chapman saves Yankees' 2-1 win over Twins 43m ago• 3 min read NEW YORK Aaron Judge hit his 44th home run, Aroldis Chapman pitched out of big trouble in the eighth inning and the New York Yankees edged the Minnesota Twins 2-1 on Monday night to increase their AL wild-card lead.Todd Frazier hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the sixth, and Jaime Garcia gave the Yankees a splendid performance against the team that traded him this year after only one start. New York, still chasing first-place Boston in the AL East, won the opener of a three-game series that could serve as a potential postseason preview two weeks from now.The Yankees have built a five-game cushion for the league's top wild card with 12 to play. Minnesota is in the second spot, 1 1/2 games ahead of the idle Los Angeles Angels. So if the standings hold, New York will host the Twins in the one-game playoff on Oct. 3.Chapman replaced a wild Dellin Betances with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth. The left-hander struck out three-time batting champion Joe Mauer, who hit a grand slam Sunday, and retired No. 3 hitter Byron Buxton on an easy fly, needing only four pitches that all reached at least 100 mph.Chapman then worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 19th save in 23 chances. It was his third career regular-season save that required at least five outs - and first since August 2013 with Cincinnati. The fireballing closer also had one in the World Series last year for the Chicago Cubs.Judge homered to right-center in the first off hard-luck loser Ervin Santana (15-8), who won his previous four decisions. The All-Star righty gave up seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.David Robertson (9-2) retired all four hitters he faced, improving to 5-0 since the Yankees reacquired him from the Chicago White Sox in July.Garcia struck out five of his first six batters and did not permit an earned run in 5 2/3 innings. He finished with nine strikeouts, equaling a season high.Garcia was traded by Minnesota to the Yankees in late July, one day after a 6-3 win at Oakland in his lone start for the Twins - the team's only victory during an eight-game stretch. They had acquired the veteran lefty from Atlanta to reinforce their rotation, but quickly moved him again before the non-waiver deadline when that short-lived slump dropped them in the standings and below .500.Frazier made a diving stop at third base on an RBI groundout by Robbie Grossman in the fifth that tied it 1-all. Garcia then got Jason Castro to ground into an inning-ending double play.LEFTY LISTCC Sabathia (11-5, 3.85 ERA) starts Tuesday night for the Yankees on seven days' rest. He needs one strikeout to match Mickey Lolich (2,832) for third place all-time among left-handers. Sabathia is 2-0 with a 3.14 ERA in five starts since returning last month from a brief stint on the DL due to right knee inflammation.EASY WAY ONYankees center fielder Jacoby Ellsbury reached on catcher's interference for the fifth time this season, extending his major league record to 31 times in his career. Ellsbury, on a recent tear at the plate, also singled, stole two bases and was intentionally walked.TRAINER'S ROOMTwins: All-Star 3B Miguel Sano (left shin) is headed back to Minnesota on Tuesday after accompanying the team to New York for a personal matter. Sano is healing slowly, but the Twins hope to have him back before the season ends - perhaps only as a DH.Yankees: All-Star C Gary Sanchez was hit on the left forearm by a seventh-inning foul ball. He was checked by a trainer but stayed in the game. ... OF Aaron Hicks (strained left oblique) did some tee and soft toss work. He said he feels really good and is close to taking batting practice. ... DH Matt Holliday was rested in favor of switch-hitter Chase Headley, even though Holliday is 5 for 12 (.417) with two home runs against Santana. ''Part of me wishes I could have 10 players in the lineup today,'' manager Joe Girardi said.UP NEXTTwins: RHP Jose Berrios (12-7, 3.84) starts the middle game of the series. He beat the Yankees 6-1 in Minnesota on July 19.Yankees: Sabathia is 18-9 with a 3.16 ERA against Minnesota, including 6-1 in 10 starts for the Yankees.---More baseball: https://apnews.com/tag/MLBbaseball
