GAME PREVIEW
Padres' Lauer looking for better effort vs. Rockies at Coors FieldFLMEric Lauer is brimming with confidence thanks to the six-week stretch he is on -- 3-0 in his last seven starts while yielding more than three runs in only one of them.San Diego's 24-year-old left-hander Lauer is establishing himself in the Padres rotation in his second season with the club, but he has one obstacle left to conquer -- pitching well at Coors Field.Lauer gets the chance when he takes the mound against the Colorado Rockies on Saturday night in Denver. Lauer (8-8, 4.41 ERA) will face Colorado rookie Peter Lambert (2-6, 6.86), who is looking for his first win in more than three months.Colorado hit four home runs, two by Trevor Story and Nolan Arenado's 40th, in a 10-8 win over San Diego in the first game of the series. The teams combined for 23 hits.Lauer and Lambert squared off in San Diego on Sunday, a 2-1 Padres victory in 10 innings. Both starters pitched well, with Lauer going six innings and giving up one run on four hits. His only mistake was allowing an RBI single in the third but he was able to shut down the Rockies after that.Lambert was nearly as effective, giving up one run on five hits in five innings. But his no-decision extended his winless streak to 16 starts. He won his first two, both against the Chicago Cubs five days apart but he has gone 0-6 with nine no-decisions since. Two of those nine starts have come against San Diego, the first in his third career start when he was roughed up for eight runs in three innings. Overall, he has allowed nine runs (10.13 ERA) in eight career innings against the Padres. In his start prior to last Sunday he was shelled in Los Angeles by the Dodgers, allowing six runs in 1 2/3 innings, but the rough outings haven't deterred the 22-year-old Lambert."The only way to learn is if you keep pitching," he told The Denver Post. "I'm learning a lot right now, and that's best for me." Lambert has gotten an extended stay in the rotation due to injuries and ineffectiveness by Colorado's projected starters. All five pitchers who began the season in the rotation are in the injured list.Like Lambert, Lauer is learning by pitching, and the lessons have been tough against the Rockies. He is 0-3 with an 8.75 ERA in six career starts against Colorado, but the numbers get worse when he pitches in Denver. His three losses have all come there, and he has compiled a 19.73 ERA at Coors Field. He has allowed 19 earned runs in just 8 2/3 innings and has never pitched beyond the third inning. That hasn't worried San Diego manager Andy Green, who has no problem trotting Lauer out to the mound in the second game of the series. He's hoping his pitcher can break through in a ballpark that has vexed him to date."I want to see Eric Lauer turn the page and have success here as well," Green said before Friday's game.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Blackmon homers in 6-run inning, Rockies beat Padres 11-10DENVER Charlie Blackmon homered to start a six-run inning, Daniel Murphy had four hits and 4 RBIs, and the Colorado Rockies hung on to beat San Diego 11-10 Saturday night in a game in which both the Padres' Eric Hosmer and manager Andy Green were ejected.Tony Wolters had a pair of hits and drove in two runs and Trevor Story doubled and singled and drove in a run. Manny Machado hit a three-run homer for San Diego.Hosmer, apparently upset over a check swing strike call in the Padres' fifth inning, argued with third base ump Carlos Torres and was ejected. Green came out of the dugout and also had words with Torres before being thrown out.The Padres grabbed an early lead on Wil Myers' two-run double in the first before Colorado took command on Murphy's first run-scoring single in the second followed by their big third inning. They sent 10 men to the plate and took advantage of a pair of fielding errors by the Padres.Trailing 11-5 in the eighth, the Padres put together a five-run inning capped by Machado's homer off Bryan Shaw, his 30th of the season. Machado became the 18th Padres player to have 30 home runs and 20 doubles in a season and the first since Myers in 2017.Peter Lambert (3-6) went five innings and allowed five runs on five hits in snapping a drought that saw him go 0-6 with a 7.79 ERA over 15 starts after winning the first two starts of his career, both against the Chicago Cubs, on June 6 and 11.Jesus Tinoco picked up his first career save, getting the last four outs. He did not allow a hit.Eric Lauer (8-9) went 2 1/3 innings and allowed six runs - four earned - in extending his struggles at Coors Field, where he fell to 0-4 with an 18.81 ERA.TRAINER'S ROOMRockies: LHP Kyle Freeland (left groin strain) threw his third bullpen since suffering injury Aug. 20. He threw about 40 pitches, and the Rockies remain hopeful he may be able to return to the mound before the end of this season. ''From what I saw, he looked great,'' Rockies manager Bud Black said before the game. ''(Threw) all his pitches with great effort and intensity. He's getting closer to a game. There's maybe a step or two to take care of, but he's going to pitch. He wants to pitch.'' UP NEXTPadres: RHP Cal Quantrill (6-6, 5.12 ERA), making his 17th start of the season, will be trying to break a string that has seen him give up eight earned run in three straight outings. He's one of five pitchers since 1908 to have given up eight or more earned runs in in three consecutive starts. Before the skid, Quantrill's second-half ERA stood at 1.79, fourth best in the majors.Rockies: RHP Chi CHi Gonzalez (1-6, 6.56 ERA) is coming off his first win as a member of the Rockies in which he pitched six innings of one-run ball in beating St. Louis.---More MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/-Sports
