GAME PREVIEW
Mar 09, 2020If the New York Knicks want to get ideas of how to contain Bradley Beal, watching film of how the Miami Heat recently defended him may be a good strategy.Coming off his first game of fewer than 25 points in nearly two months, Beal looks to get back on track Tuesday night when the Wizards host the Knicks, who are coming off one of their best defensive games of the season.Beal's 30.4 points per game ranks second in the league behind Houston's James Harden (34.3). He scored at least 25 points in 21 straight games from Jan. 20-March 6 and averaged 36.0 points in the streak. The streak ended Sunday night in a 100-89 home loss to Miami when Beal scored 23 points and shot 8 of 24 as the Wizards matched their lowest point total of the season."We just got stagnant. We've got to keep moving. I feel like, a lot of times, we were just kind of just watching me. We can't get caught up in doing that," Beal said. "They took away all my drives, everything pretty much toward the paint. They wanted to kind of force me to shoot jumpers all night." Beal is right as he attempted 16 shots from distances of 16 feet or more in Sunday's game when the Wizards shot a season-low 33.3 percent.Beal's streak was the second-longest by an Eastern Conference player since 2001 and during the run, the Wizards were 10-11. Overall Beal has 40 games of at least 25 points and the Wizards are 17-23 when he gets at least 25 points. Two of those games were in New York. He scored 30 on 13-of-38 shooting Dec. 23 when the Wizards posted a 121-115 win and then finished with 30 when he hit nine 3-pointers in a 114-96 win on Feb. 12 and scored 10 points in a decisive 24-8 run in the fourth quarter.New York is coming off a 3-2 homestand after getting wins over Chicago, Houston and Detroit sandwiched around losses to Utah and Oklahoma City. The Knicks won high-scoring games over Chicago and Houston and then used defense to post a 96-84 victory over Detroit on Sunday night. The Knicks produced some of their best defensive numbers Sunday as the 36.3 percent shooting allowed was their fourth-best total of the season and their 84 points allowed were their second-lowest of the season. New York also had 10 steals and outrebounded Detroit 51-35."One thing we talked about is that any defensive team has to have a set of rules and you play by those rules so you can play together," Knicks interim coach Mike Miller said. "I thought we were pretty connected tonight. I was pleased with the effort, staying with the defensive side and trusting that and allowing the defense to help create the offense." Julius Randle posted his 29th double-double with 17 of his 22 points after halftime to go along with 12 rebounds while Elfrid Payton delivered another steady game with 16 points and six assists.Randle has five double-doubles in his last six games while Payton is averaging 18 points and 7.7 assists in his last three games. The Wizards are 20-4 in the past 24 meetings with the Knicks, who claimed a 107-100 win in Washington on Dec. 28 when Beal sat out with soreness in his right leg.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Mar 10, 2020WASHINGTON Bradley Beal got back to his high-scoring ways with 40 points, lifting the Washington Wizards to a 122-115 victory over the New York Knicks on Tuesday night.Beal overcame a slow start and surpassed the 25-point plateau for the 22nd time in 23 games. His string of 21 such games was snapped Sunday when he scored 23 in a loss to Miami. The Wizards' win meant the Heat will have to wait at least one more day to clinch an Eastern Conference playoff spot. Miami can do so with a home win Wednesday against Charlotte.Beal scored 27 in the second half after connecting on five of his first 15 shots against the Knicks.Shabazz Napier added 21 points for the Wizards.Bobby Portis led the Knicks with 20 points against his former team, while Julius Randle added 16 before fouling out. Both teams squandered big leads. The Wizards lost a 14-point lead in the first quarter, and the Knicks blew an 18-point advantage in the third. The teams are out of the playoff hunt in the East, and it sounded as if there were more Knicks fans than Wizards supporters in the stands. When it was announced late in the first quarter that a 3-pointer by Frank Ntilikina was overturned by replay review, there were more boos than cheers in the more-than-half-empty arena. Chants of ''Let's go, Knicks!'' and ''MVP'' could be heard as rookie RJ Barrett shot free throws.TIP-INSKnicks: G Dennis Smith Jr. was cleared from the concussion protocol but did not play.Wizards: G Jerome Robinson was back in the starting lineup after missing Sunday's game against Miami with an Achilles injury. ... G Ish Smith missed his fourth consecutive game with left hamstring tightness. ... F Isaac Bonga did not play due to a groin contusion.CELEBRATION POSTPONEDThe Knicks have postponed their planned anniversary celebration of the franchise's 1970 NBA championship because of concerns about the novel coronavirus. New York is working with players from that title team to reschedule events originally set for Madison Square Garden on March 21, when the Knicks host the Golden State Warriors.RUI BOUNCES BACKWizards coach Scott Brooks said before the game the team planned to get struggling rookie Rui Hachimura involved early, and that's exactly what happened.Hachimura took a feed from Thomas Bryant on the game's opening possession for an uncontested dunk. He had been 0 for 14 from the field in the Wizards' two prior games. After being held scoreless in Sunday's loss to Miami, Hachimura connected on three of his first four from the field and scored 10 points of his 12 points in the first half.CLOSED LOCKER ROOMSBoth locker rooms were closed to the media in keeping with the league's new policy to help contain the spread of the coronavirus.Players and coaches spoke to reporters in designated interview areas.UP NEXTKnicks: Travel to Atlanta to face the Hawks on Wednesday.Wizards: At Boston on Friday.---More NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/-Sports
