Can The Eagles Defy the Odds and Stop the Chiefs at Super Bowl LIX?

American football fans worldwide are tingling with excitement as the countdown to Super Bowl LIX continues. The Philadelphia Eagles face the Kansas City Chiefs at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on February 9, and the bookmakers can hardly separate the two National Football League (NFL) goliaths. The cream of the AFC takes on the best the NFC offers in a battle for the coveted Vince Lombardi Trophy and the right to call themselves the 2024 NFL champions.

Super Bowl LIX marks the fifth time the Philadelphia Eagles have navigated to American football's biggest stage. The Eagles have reached the Super Bowl for the third time in seven years and the first time since losing 35-38 at Super Bowl LVII to, ironically, the Chiefs in February 2023. Those who knew how to bet on Superbowl saw the Eagles favored by 1.5 points, but the roles are reversed this time; will the result be different, too?

Eagles' Confidence is Soaring High

The Eagles finished the 2024 NFL regular season with a 14-2 record, which was enough to secure the team's 13th NFC East divisional title and fifth Conference Championship. The Eagles regularly bulldozed their way to victory during the regular season, finishing the campaign with a +160 points differential, second only to the free-scoring Detroit Lions (+222).

Eagles fans saw their team blow away opponents despite having the third-worst passing offense regarding passing yards. Jalen Hurts enjoyed a career-best pass completion percentage (68.7%) and passer rating (103.7) but also his lowest total passing yards (2,903) since becoming the Eagles' starting quarterback in 2021. However, Hurts chipped in with 630 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns, showing why he is a dangerous dual-threat quarterback.

While the Eagles faltered in the passing department, their rushing game was deadly throughout the season. The 3,048 rushing yards and 29 touchdowns were the second-best in the entire NFL, trailing only the Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Bills, respectively.

Although the Eagles' rushing game is elite-level, primarily thanks to the often unstoppable Saquon Barkley, who racked up 2,005 yards and 13 touchdowns, the Chiefs' run defense was the eighth-best in the NFL, allowing only 1,731 yards. Barkley versus the Chiefs' defense could answer what happens when an unstoppable object collides with an immovable object!

Chiefs Could Write Themselves into NFL History

Kansas City Chiefs fans have grown used to watching their beloved team completely smoke their opponents, but that has not been the case throughout 2024. Despite finishing with an impressive 15-2 regular season record, the Chiefs only had a +59 points differential, the worst among all the teams with three or fewer losses since 1970.

Eleven of the Chiefs' wins were within one score, and the usually free-scoring men from Missouri failed to score more than 30 points in any of their 17 fixtures. They finally registered 32 points in the AFC Championship victory over the Buffalo Bills.

While it is safe to say that the Chiefs are yet to get out of second gear, football fans can see why bookmakers favor them. Andy Reid is a master tactician who has been there, seen it all, and got the T-shirt. Under his coaching, the Chiefs have won nine consecutive AFC West titles and are one game away from becoming the first-ever NFL team to win three consecutive Super Bowls. The Chiefs know how to get over the line when the going gets tough.

Quarterback Patrick Mahomes is coming into Super Bowl LIX off the back of his least productive season. That sounds ridiculous, considering Mahomes threw 3,928 yards and 26 touchdowns over 16 games. However, one must remember that Mahomes has been the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player (MVP) in each of the three Super Bowls he's played so far. Mahomes is another Chiefs player with a knack for getting the job done when his team needs a moment of magic.

Who Will Win Super Bowl LIX?

Two excellent teams contest Super Bowl LIX in the Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs. Who comes out on top depends on many ifs and buts, but the online sportsbooks slightly favor the Chiefs. The Chiefs are -1.5 in the handicap betting market, which is half of a field goal, a statistic showing how evenly matched the teams are.

The same bookies do not expect a high-scoring game despite their last Super Bowl battle being one of the highest-scoring in the Super Bowl era. The total points market is currently set at under 48.5, suggesting a tight affair in New Orleans.

If the Chiefs turn up and play how we know they can, they should prove too much for the Eagles to handle. However, if the Chiefs' run defense is not on the top of its game, the Eagles' Saquon Barkley could run riot. Barkely could be a good shout for the coveted MVP award if that happens.

Should the Chiefs excellent defense manage to stop the Eagles rushing game in its tracks, the Eagles will need Jalen Hurts to rediscover his 2023 form that resulted in a five-year, $255 million contract extension being thrust in front of him. Hurts' arm may not have been as effective this season as the previous one, but he has often been the difference for the Eagles in 2024 thanks to 18 rushing touchdowns and 752 rushing yards across the regular season and the playoffs.

Super Bowl LIX should be a fantastic game for the neutrals out there. Viewers will either see NFL history being made when the Chiefs complete an unprecedented three-peat or watch a jubilant Eagles team and their (sometimes) overpassionate fans celebrate wildly in the Caesars Superdome. Therefore, the real winner is anyone who watches this football game!
