Toronto beats Boston 7-2; Red Sox win streak ends at 7 games

TORONTO (AP) - Kevin Gausman matched a season high with 10 strikeouts over seven innings, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit one of three Toronto home runs and the Blue Jays halted Boston's seven-game winning streak, beating the Red Sox 7-2 Monday night.

Guerrero hit a two-run home run, his 18th of the season, Matt Chapman also hit a two-run blast and George Springer added a solo shot as Toronto improved to 6-2 against Boston.

Gausman (6-6) snapped a four-start losing streak, winning for the first time since May 31 against the White Sox.. Three of the four hits Gausman allowed were singles.

Boston's only runs came off newly promoted right-hander Shaun Anderson in the ninth, when Trevor Story hit a sacrifice fly and Bobby Dalbec added an RBI single that struck Anderson on the foot.

The Red Sox, who came in 7-14 against AL East opponents, lost the opener of a stretch in which they face Toronto, Tampa Bay and the Yankees 20 times in 23 games.

Only five of Boston's previous 50 games had been against division foes, all of them against Baltimore. The Red Sox went 2-3 in those games, while going 31-14 against other opponents.

Boston hadn't faced the Blue Jays, Rays or Yankees since losing three of four in Toronto from April 25-28.

  • The Red Sox have 16 games remaining against both the Rays and Yankees.

    Making his first start of the season and the second of his big league career, Red Sox right-hander Connor Seabold (0-1) allowed seven runs and nine hits in 4 2/3 innings.

    Bo Bichette hit an RBI double in the first, and Springer made it 2-0 when he homered in the third, his 14th of the season.

    BIchette followed with a single before Guerrero homered to center.

    Lourdes Gurriel Jr. drove in a run with a fielder's choice in the fifth and Chapman made it 7-0 with a two-out homer to left, his 11th.

    The Blue Jays are 21-10 when they hit two or more home runs.

    TRAINER'S ROOM

    Red Sox: LHP Chris Sale threw a bullpen Monday and remains on track to make his second minor league rehab start at Double-A Portland on Thursday. ... RHP Garrett Whitlock (right hip) threw a bullpen session in Toronto on Monday. ... INF Kike Hernandez (right hip) played catch Monday but has yet to resume swinging, manager Alex Cora said.

    Blue Jays: RHP Trevor Richards (strained neck) threw a live batting practice session to a group of hitters including C Danny Jansen (broken finger). Richards has been sidelined since June 18.

    ROSTER MOVES

    Red Sox: Boston put RHP Tanner Houck and OF Jarren Duran on the restricted list, recalled Seabold from Triple-A Worcester and selected INF Yolmer Sanchez from Triple-A.

    Blue Jays: Toronto selected Anderson from Triple-A Buffalo and optioned RHP Jeremy Beasley to Triple-A. To make room on the 40-man roster, LHP Hyun Jin Ryu (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day IL.

    EXTRA BASE

    Rafael Devers got the only extra-base hit off Gausman, a ball that bounced off the second base bag and into shallow left field.

    WORK LOAD

    Gausman threw a season-high 110 pitches, fanning Bobby Dalbec with his final pitch.

    UP NEXT

    Red Sox RHP Michael Wacha (6-1, 2.34) starts Tuesday against Blue Jays RHP Ross Stripling (4-2, 3.08). Wacha is 3-0 with a 2.19 ERA in four June starts. Stripling has a 6.52 ERA in seven career games against Boston.
