D-backs' Leake, Giants' Samardzija set for rematchFLMTwo pitchers with the experience of having been traded into playoff races go head-to-head Tuesday night when the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks meet the San Francisco Giants in a game with National League postseason ramifications. As both teams fight an uphill battle in pursuit of an NL wild-card spot, the visiting Diamondbacks (66-66) moved a half-game ahead of the Giants (65-66) with a 6-4 win in the series opener Monday. The win allowed Arizona to tie the season series 9-9, with the final head-to-head meeting on Tuesday. The series opener didn't resemble a critical matchup of playoff contenders, with the teams combining for four errors, three wild pitches, a passed ball and five unearned runs.Hoping to face fewer such obstacles, the Diamondbacks will send right-hander Mike Leake (9-10, 4.77 ERA) to the mound to duel Giants righty Jeff Samardzija (9-10, 3.44) in a rematch of a 10-9, 11-inning San Francisco win at Arizona earlier this month.Neither pitcher got a decision in that game, but Samardzija posted the better results, allowing just two runs and five hits in 5 1/3 innings. He is 1-1 with a 1.77 ERA in his past three starts, and 4-5 with a 4.33 ERA in 20 lifetime games (15 starts) against the Diamondbacks.Samardzija is pitching in his third playoff race in the past six seasons, including having been acquired by Oakland from the Chicago Cubs at the trade deadline in 2014, when the Athletics earned an American League wild-card spot.Mike Yastrzemski belted three home runs, including one off Leake, in the Aug. 16 contest, but he was held out of the starting lineup Tuesday after getting hit by a pitch in the hand on Sunday. With Alex Dickerson being brought back slowly from a strained oblique, the Giants had to resort to starting utility man Abiatal Avelino in left field in the important game Tuesday. The rookie went 1-for-2 with a walk and his first career RBI before leaving the game as part of a double switch in the seventh inning."I could have put Dickerson out there, but I'm trying to pick my spots for him and I wanted to give (Avelino) some at-bats," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said pregame. "He's asked to move around and play different positions." Dickerson eventually entered as a sixth-inning pinch hitter and finished 0-for-1 with a walk. Yastrzemski pinch-hit in the ninth inning and struck out to end the game.Bochy hopes to have Yastrzemski available to start in the rematch with Leake, who was acquired from Seattle at the trade deadline. The Diamondbacks were looking to fill the big hole created when they dealt Zack Greinke to the Houston Astros for prospects.Leake was acquired by the Giants in a similar situation in 2015 as the club was attempting to defend its 2014 championship. The veteran, who came at the cost of Adam Duvall, went just 2-5 in nine starts for San Francisco. The 31-year-old veteran has gone 0-2 with an 8.02 ERA in four starts since joining the Diamondbacks, but he saw improvement in his most recent outing. He gave up eight hits -- all singles -- and five runs in five innings in a 7-2 loss to the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday."Sometimes balls through holes can beat you, and today was that," Leake said after the game. "Unfortunately, I wasn't quite missing enough barrel to where they could hit it to our guys." Including the meeting with the Giants earlier this month, when he was roughed up for four runs and eight hits in six innings, Leake has gone 5-2 with a 4.73 ERA in 12 games (11 starts) in his career against his old team.--Field Level Media
