Amid 10-game skid, Orioles again face MarinersFLMThe Baltimore Orioles scored nine runs in the first four games of their West Coast trip. They matched that total Friday night -- and still suffered their 10th consecutive defeat.Kyle Seager's two-run homer broke a tie in the third inning and the Seattle Mariners eventually had to hold on for a 10-9 victory against the Orioles. The teams will continue their four-game series Saturday afternoon on Turn Back the Clock Day at T-Mobile Park, with the Mariners wearing the uniforms of the 1969 Seattle Pilots. The Pilots were the first MLB team in Seattle, staying just one season before moving to Milwaukee and becoming the Brewers. The Orioles took a 3-0 lead in the first inning Friday before Seattle scored the next 10 runs. Baltimore scored five times in the sixth and once more in the seventh to pull within a run, but struck out five times over the final two innings."We're not making it easy on ourselves. We don't tack on runs, and it's difficult to win that way," Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said before Friday's game. "We don't add onto leads. We don't add on runs. It seems like once we get down, these last couple weeks, we have a hard time getting back into it. We're having a hard time against major league bullpens that seem to be going through us as of late." The Orioles were without leading hitter Trey Mancini for the second consecutive game after he sustained a severe elbow contusion Wednesday when hit by a pitch in Oakland.Hyde said he hopes Mancini can return by the end of the weekend."He feels better, but still sore," Hyde said. "We'll talk about (Saturday) in the morning. I think he'll be back in the next day or two." Dylan Moore and Mac Williamson also homered, and leadoff hitter Mallex Smith went 3 for 4 with a double and scored four runs for the Mariners, who have won three consecutive games for the first time since April 18-20."We're streaking," Mariners manager Scott Servais said. "It was a crazy game." The Mariners are scheduled to use an opener Saturday before turning over the ball to veteran left-hander Tommy Milone (1-1, 3.03 ERA). The Orioles plan to start RHP Andrew Cashner (6-3, 4.48).Milone is 2-1 with a 2.23 ERA in six career appearances against Baltimore, including five starts; Cashner is 2-5 with a 4.22 ERA in 11 games (10 starts) against Seattle. In his past three outings with an opener, Milone has allowed just five runs on 10 hits in 17 2/3 innings, with one walk and 13 strikeouts.Milone, 32, has found success pitching up in the strike zone this season despite a fastball that is usually just shy of 90 mph."That's something I kind of started doing last year, and I've embraced it just because the analytics now tell you where your pitches play," Milone told MLB.com."For me, I had a higher spin rate, and the fastball plays up in the zone a little better. Obviously I'm not going abandon staying down because that's primarily where a pitcher like me needs to be, but to work the ball up in the zone as well has definitely helped," Milone said.--Field Level Media
