Tigers set to welcome Indians for weekend seriesFLMThe Detroit Tigers enter the weekend with plenty of uncertainty. But the roles of primary setup man and closer seem stable for the time being. The Tigers host Cleveland on Friday night with no questions about what they'll do in the late innings if they have a slim lead.Shane Greene has been lights out this season, leading the American League with 20 saves. However, Joe Jimenez has bounced in and out the role of the eighth-inning setup man. He's back in that spot after helping to preserve a 3-2 win over Kansas City on Wednesday night."I'm tired of messing around with this thing," manager Ron Gardenhire told the Detroit News. "We're trying to find the right situations, well, we never have those situations. Just let Joe take the ball in the eighth inning and go shut it down." Jimenez has retired the last six batters he's faced over two appearances after allowing five earned runs in his previous three outings."It's all positive," he said to the News. "Nothing mechanical. Just the same thing, keep working. ... It's just getting that confidence again. It wasn't there the last few outings." Trade rumors hover over the club, with an MLB.com report indicating this week that Greene, ace Matthew Boyd and right fielder Nicholas Castellanos are available to contenders.Detroit lost to the Royals 7-3 on Thursday. Tigers center fielder JaCoby Jones exited early with a left elbow contusion. The Tigers' scheduled starter on Friday, Ryan Carpenter (1-3, 7.89 ERA), was roughed up in his last outing after collecting his first win of the season against Tampa Bay on June 4.Carpenter surrendered eight runs on 10 hits in 3 2/3 innings against Minnesota on Sunday. The 28-year-old left-hander lost his only career start against Cleveland last season while allowing five earned runs in five innings.Cleveland hits the road after going 5-3 on a homestand. The Indians won series against Minnesota and the New York Yankees 2-1 and split two games with Cincinnati.Following the three-game series in Detroit, they head to Texas for a four-game series before returning home to host the Tigers next weekend."We move on pretty quickly," manager Terry Francona told MLB.com. "I don't think (looking back) is productive. If it was productive, I'd do it. I think we're competing. We make some mistakes. But as long as they keep playing and trying to get better, we have to do that. And we will." Indians starter Adam Plutko (2-1, 5.19) will make his fourth start this season. The 27-year-old right-hander held the Yankees to two runs on three hits in six innings while collecting a victory on Saturday. He was aided that day by right fielder Jordan Luplow's spectacular catch in the sixth, which robbed Brett Gardner of a hit."That completely changed the inning" Plutko told MLB.com afterward. "He picked me up huge, where we're trying to shut down that inning after getting a lead, not trying to give them any life at all. If he doesn't catch that, all of sudden, they have a little bit of life. He caught it and changed the entire inning and maybe the entire game." Plutko has faced Detroit four times in his career, including one start, posting a 1-0 record and 4.50 ERA.Cleveland took two of three from the Tigers at Comerica Park from April 9-11.--Field Level Media
