Rockies, Giants hope to save tired bullpens in series finale Two pitchers looking to pick up worn-out teammates with their bats as well as their arms go head-to-head Sunday afternoon when the San Francisco Giants go for a home sweep over the Colorado Rockies.En route to clinching their first series win of the season, the Giants executed brilliantly in a 5-2 win Saturday, just 12 hours after an 18-inning marathon sent players back to their homes and hotels to get whatever sleep time would allow before a rematch.Interestingly, one of the guys who wondered aloud about getting enough rest between games turned out to be one of Saturday's big hitters, with catcher Chris Iannetta contributing a double and a single to Colorado's six-hit total. When last seen 12 hours earlier, Iannetta was pulling his foot prematurely off home plate in an attempt to force out Brandon Belt with what could have been the second out of the 18th inning.Instead, Belt was called safe -- a ruling that was confirmed by replay -- and the teams went their separate ways after a 3-2 Giants win."I tried to play it like a first baseman and my foot didn't stay on the base," Iannetta explained to reporters shortly after the 5-hour, 35-minute game had ended just short of 1 a.m. "I felt like I'd never played baseball before. I don't think I'll be sleeping much after this one." Surprisingly, the Giants looked very much awake in Saturday's win, doing just about everything right on their way to a third straight win in the four-game series."We just played the game well. All facets," Giants manager Bruce Bochy gushed at his postgame press conference. "Executed nicely ... (sacrifice) bunt, (three) sac flies, big two-out hit by Buster (Posey), tacked on (in the eighth inning), nice defense. ... Just a really well-played game."And that's saying a lot about these guys. Long night and short rest. They came out and played well." Despite depleted bullpens, the clubs had to use five more relievers in Saturday's game, putting Sunday starters German Marquez of the Rockies (1-1, 3.00) and Derek Holland of the Giants (1-1, 3.38) under the gun, just as Colorado's Kyle Freeland and San Francisco's Madison Bumgarner had been on Saturday.Neither has pitched well against Sunday's opponent, but each has enjoyed some hitting success against the other.Marquez went 2-for-2 with a double the last time he faced Holland in July of 2017, a game the Rockies won 12-4.Despite the good fortune at the plate, Marquez didn't hang around long enough to get the win in the game. In fact, he's never beaten the Giants, going 0-3 with a 6.33 ERA in five career starts. He's been especially troubled in San Francisco, where he's run up a 7.52 ERA in four starts, his highest ERA at any ballpark in the majors.Yangervis Solarte (4-for-6 with two home runs) and Belt (5-for-7 with a double and two triples) have done significant damage against the right-hander. And even Holland got to Marquez for a single in the 2017 meeting. How unusual was that? Holland has gone 3-for-58 since with 37 strikeouts.Ian Desmond (4-for-8 with a double and two homers) and Trevor Story (5-for-10 with a double) have fattened up their lifetime numbers against Holland, who is 1-2 with a 6.23 ERA in four career starts against the Rockies.--Field Level Media
