Harvey to debut for Angels; Estrada hopes to rebound for A's Two veteran pitchers looking to make good first impressions go head-to-head Friday night when the Los Angeles Angels visit the Oakland Athletics for a second time in their four-game series.Right-hander Matt Harvey (7-9, 4.94 ERA in 2018) will make his debut for the Angels, while Oakland's Marco Estrada (0-0, 5.40 this season) will pitch in front of his new home fans for the first time, after each received a one-year contract in free agency.Harvey cashed the bigger check, agreeing to an $11 million deal with the Angels after splitting time with the New York Mets and Cincinnati Reds last season. He was able to salvage a decent season by going 7-7 with a 4.50 ERA in 24 starts with the Reds, after he'd had a disastrous first eight appearances (four starts) with the Mets, going 0-2 with a 7.00 ERA.Harvey, who turned 30 on Wednesday, hopes to pitch like he did earlier in the career, but respond better to those positive results."I wouldn't say I'm happy for the experiences I've gone through, but I think for the rest of my career it'll better me as a teammate and a player," he told reporters during spring training. "It will definitely help in my workouts and performance. In between starts, it's definitely lit a fire under my rear end and made me strive to be better." Harvey has never pitched in the American League, but he has made 13 starts in interleague games. He's gone 4-4 with a 2.58 ERA in those games. He's never faced the A's. In fact, he's gone up against just one team from his new division -- the Houston Astros -- and got bombed in that game (two innings, seven runs).Harvey will face an A's lineup that made the most of seven hits in beating the Angels 4-0 on Thursday.A double by Stephen Piscotty, a triple by Jurickson Profar and solo home runs by Marcus Semien and Khris Davis helped account for each of four one-run innings.A's fans who turned on their televisions early in the morning to watch their team open in Japan last week were able to see the type of pitching that got Estrada into trouble with the Toronto Blue Jays last season. The 35-year-old, signed to a $4 million deal, allowed just five hits in five innings. But two of them left the ballpark, including a two-run blast by former Oakland third baseman Ryon Healy.Estrada did not get a decision in the eventual 5-4 loss in 12 innings. The A's are hoping the spacious Oakland Coliseum helps keep a few more of Estrada's pitches in play this season. He gave up 60 homers the last two seasons for Toronto.Estrada has made five career starts against the Angels, going 1-3 with a 5.90 ERA.He's allowed six homers in 29 innings against Los Angeles, with Mike Trout going deep twice in 15 plate appearances. The A's, meanwhile, would love to see Kendrys Morales continue his powerful rate of home run hitting.Acquired on the eve of the home opener from Toronto, Morales has hit 79 homers the last three seasons and 211 in 12 major league seasons. He did not play in Thursday's 4-0 win, but manager Bob Melvin made it clear he wasn't acquired to sit on the bench."He's always a threat," Melvin told reporters before Thursday's game. "He'll fit in with our team and probably hit somewhere in the middle of the order against right-handers." --Field Level Media
