Bashing Brewers open series at San FranciscoFLMThe Milwaukee Brewers slugged their way past the Houston Astros on Wednesday to earn a two-game series split, and they will look to overpower the Giants in a three-game series that opens Friday night in San Francisco. The Brewers' four-homer night, capped by a two-run shot in the 14th inning by Mike Moustakas, sent Milwaukee past the Astros 6-3.The win was a game of feast or famine for Milwaukee. Ryan Braun, Yasmani Grandal and Eric Thames all hit solo home runs, but Houston pitchers managed to whiff 24 Milwaukee batters before Moustakas finally put the game to bed with his extra-inning clout. While the Brewers rank first in the National League in homers, the Giants rank next to last in the league in long balls and last in batting average and on-base percentage entering the opener of a three-game series. The Brewers enter with five wins in their past six games.Brewers starter Zach Davies (7-0, 2.41 ERA) will look to win a third consecutive start when he pitches Friday. However, the 26-year-old right-hander matched his second-shortest outing of the season in his latest start, Saturday at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates.Davies allowed seven hits and three runs in just five innings, with one walk and three strikeouts. Only his May 22 start against the Cincinnati Reds (three innings, six hits, six runs) was shorter."I think I got away from my game plan a little bit," said Davies, who was hit hard by the Pirates and worked deeply into counts. "Trying to be too fine with things." The Giants, who are coming off a two-game home sweep of the San Diego Padres, will counter with Drew Pomeranz, whose record is almost the complete inverse of what Davies has posted.Pomeranz (1-6, 7.16 ERA) will look for a strong follow-up to his second-best start of the season. The southpaw escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the first inning June 7 against the Dodgers, and he wound up pitching five scoreless innings. Pomeranz allowed three hits and a walk while striking out seven in a no-decision, and the Giants defeated Los Angeles ace Clayton Kershaw 2-1.The outing by Pomeranz, 30, was reminiscent of his start in Toronto on April 24, when he spun six scoreless innings against the Blue Jays and allowed just two hits for his lone win of 2019.He said producing some good numbers for a change gives him a mental boost."I think confidence is huge," Pomeranz said. "Getting out of that first inning, when it seems like everything is not going your way and you start wiggling out of those jams, it's huge for you as a pitcher."Instead of feeling like you're not getting out of anything, you start rolling with those situations and focusing on one pitch at a time." Pomeranz is 0-1 with an 8.00 ERA in two career starts against the Brewers, a no-decision in 2012 and a defeat in 2017.Davies owns an 0-1 record and a 1.64 ERA in two starts vs. San Francisco, a loss in 2017 and a no-decision last year. In his only appearance at what is now Oracle Park, he gave up two runs (none earned) on six hits in six innings on Aug. 21, 2017.--Field Level Media
