Braves' Teheran, Mets' deGrom set for showdownFLMJacob deGrom has feasted against the Atlanta Braves. Julio Teheran has done likewise against the New York Mets.Something will have to give on Tuesday when deGrom (3-6, 3.38) goes toe-to-toe against Teheran (5-4, 2.92) in the second game of a three-game series in Atlanta between the two N. L. East rivals.DeGrom, the reigning Cy Young Award winner, allowed two earned runs over seven innings while striking out eight against St. Louis in his last outing on June 13. In three appearances in June, deGrom has a 2.29 ERA -- allowing no more than two runs in a game -- with 25 strikeouts in 19 2/3 innings.The right-hander has a 1.86 ERA in 116 career innings against the Braves, his lowest ERA against an opponent from the N. L. East. In his last eight starts against the Braves, deGrom has allowed eight runs in 53 innings for a 1.36 ERA.In his last start against the Braves on April 14, deGrom allowed three runs on five hits and four walks, with nine strikeouts, in a 7-3 loss. He is 4-4 with a 2.31 ERA in 11 starts in Atlanta.The Braves won the first game of the series 12-3 on Monday and lead the season series 3-2. The loss dropped the Mets four games under .500 as they begin an 11-game road trip that could make or break their season."We need to get to .500," New York manager Mickey Callaway said. "We talked about it (Monday morning) as a group. We need to get to .500 and start adding on past that." DeGrom will be tasked with stopping an Atlanta offense that has scored double-digit runs six times in June. The Braves have won their last two games by a combined 27-4 and have scored at least five runs in 10 of their last 11 games.Among the hottest hitters has been center fielder Ronald Acuna Jr. He has a nine-game hitting streak and is 7-for-10 over the last two games. Acuna is hitting .409 (18-for-44) with three homers during the streak. He lifted his batting average to .301."Everybody in our lineup can do damage," second baseman Ozzie Albies said. "We just have to keep it going." That's good news for Teheran, who has beaten the Mets more than any other team in his career. The native of Colombia is 10-7 with a 2.35 ERA in 26 appearances, 25 starts, against New York.Teheran has pitched well over the last month. In his previous five starts, Teheran is 2-0 with a 0.98 ERA. He has allowed six runs, three earned, over his last 27 2/3 innings, without yielding a home run.Teheran beat the Mets on April 14 when he pitched six innings and allowed only one run on six hits and two walks, striking out six.In his last start on June 13 against the Pittsburgh Pirates, Teheran pitched six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on three hits and three walks. He had not surrendered a run in his two previous starts."It was very evident to me that he was on a mission," Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said after Teheran beat the Pirates.--Field Level Media
