Brewers get another crack at Mets' Matz New York Mets left-hander Steven Matz and Brewers right-hander Brandon Woodruff will get a look at the opposing team for the second time in a week when they start the opener of a three-game series on Friday in Milwaukee.Matz (3-1, 3.68 ERA) helped the Mets salvage the finale of a three-game series in New York last weekend. He went seven innings on Sunday, allowing two runs and five hits with four strikeouts and no walks in the 5-2 victory. The 27-year-old New York state native has pitched well against the Brewers overall in his career, owning a 4-1 record and 3.16 ERA in five starts.Matz, who is trying to win his third straight outing, has enjoyed the best results so far this season on a starting staff that includes Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard and Zack Wheeler.Syndergaard was outstanding on Thursday afternoon at the Cincinnati Reds, however, throwing a shutout and accounting for the only run with a home run in a 1-0 victory.Matz's only bad outing of the season came when he failed to record an out against the host Philadelphia Phillies on April 16, allowing eight runs (six earned) and four hits, including two homers, before he was pulled."If you look up there, it's amazing he has the ERA that he does when he got no outs in a start and gave up that many runs," Mets manager Mickey Callaway said after Matz's start on Sunday. "He's pitched tremendously aside from that one start." Milwaukee third baseman Hernan Perez is 0-for-11 in his past five games, and he could be on the bench for a third straight game Friday. Perez is 2-for-14 in his career off Matz, though he does have a home run.Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun is 3-for-11 off Matz, and Mike Moustakas is 2-for-3, each with a home run.It is uncertain if Matz will face off with Brewers right fielder Christian Yelich, who has been sidelined since leaving Sunday's game with discomfort in his lower back. Yelich took some light swings on Thursday before Milwaukee closed out a four-game split against the visiting Colorado Rockies with an 11-6 loss."We'll ramp up the intensity a little more today," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said Thursday, according to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "I wouldn't say for sure he's (going to be ready Friday). I'd say there's a good chance you'll see him on the field (for a pregame workout), but I don't know if he'll be ready to play. I'm still hopeful for the weekend, but I don't know if that means (Friday) yet." Yelich, the reigning National League Most Valuable Player, is 5-for-18 in his career off Matz with no extra-base hits.Woodruff (3-1, 5.17 ERA) will look to build on an effective outing Saturday against the Mets, when he allowed one run on six hits in five innings during an 8-6 win. He struck out six and walked one while throwing 87 pitches in his first career appearance against New York. The Mets have alternated wins and losses over their past six games. The Brewers took the first two games of this week's series against the Rockies before they lost the last two by yielding 11 runs in each game.--Field Level Media
