Gray to make home debut for Yankees vs. Mets 2h ago• 3 min read NEW YORK -- Many things have gone wrong on the mound for the New York Mets this season.Jacob deGrom is among the few things to go well. The Mets will start deGrom on Tuesday against the New York Yankees, who will unveil Sonny Gray to fans at Yankee Stadium for the first time.DeGrom is 13-5 with a 3.21 ERA after allowing four hits in 6 2/3 innings of a 10-0 win at Philadelphia on Thursday. He struck out nine but exited early after getting hit with on the triceps by a line drive from Nick Williams.Manager Terry Collins confirmed the right-hander is ready to start. In his past 11 starts, deGrom is 9-2 with a 1.82 ERA. He has totaled 85 strikeouts while issuing 16 walks in that span, and his nine wins in that period are the most in the majors."We always talk and we have for a long time that if you are the number one guy, you step up, and Jake's done that all season," Collins said. "This stage, he's used to this stage. He's pitched in big games in the playoffs. He's pitched in huge games in the World Series and the All-Star Game. If there's one guy you feel comfortable sending out there on this stage, it would be him." The 2014 National League Rookie of the Year has pitched well for a team with a collective 4.89 ERA and one that is missing Noah Syndergaard (lat) and Matt Harvey (right shoulder).DeGrom made his major league debut against the Yankees on May 15, 2014, at Citi Field. He took the loss despite allowing one run and six hits in seven innings of a 1-0 defeat. He is 1-2 with a 3.12 ERA in three career starts against the Yankees. Since his debut, deGrom allowed six runs and eight hits in five innings at Yankee Stadium on April 24, 2015, and last year in Queens, he pitched seven shutout innings in a 7-1 win.Gray will be facing the Mets for the first time. He did not pitch at Citi Field when the Oakland Athletics visited the Mets from July 21-23 with trade rumors swirled around him. The A's dealt him to the Yankees on July 31.Gray will be making his third start since the trade. He allowed three runs (two earned) in six innings during a 4-0 loss at Toronto on Thursday."Clearly, I wasn't throwing enough strikes," Gray said. "I just gave them too many free passes and I just didn't throw enough strikes, definitely not enough quality strikes." He also pitched in a 5-1 loss at Cleveland on Aug. 3 in his debut for the Yankees.Despite the lack of run support, Gray is 4-4 with a 1.75 ERA in his past eight starts.Gray and deGrom will square off after the Yankees opened the series with a 4-2 victory Monday in a game that featured five homers.Aaron Judge hit his 36th homer on a night when he struck out for the 31st straight game. He is one shy of the record for position players set by Adam Dunn in 2012 with the Chicago White Sox.Aaron Hicks hit the go-ahead homer in the eighth, and Gary Sanchez matched his season total from last season with his 20th homer. Those blasts helped the Yankees win for the fifth time in eight games and move back to within 4 1/2 games of the Boston Red Sox in the American League East after two tough losses to their longtime rival over the weekend."We need to win games," Girardi said. "We're chasing in our division. You look up and Boston loses tonight, and basically we're right back to where we started on Friday." Curtis Granderson and Yoenis Cespedes homered for the Mets, who are 4-7 in their past 11 games and 4-9 in their past 13 games against the Yankees.
