Road-weary Nats turn to Hellickson vs. Mets The Washington Nationals return home after nearly getting no-hit on the final day of a 10-game road trip. The New York Mets hit the road after getting rained out Sunday against Miami, the victim of heavy storms in the Northeast over the weekend. The rain should clear out by the time the Nationals host the Mets on Tuesday night, as New York's Noah Syndergaard (2-3, 5.14 ERA) starts opposite Jeremy Hellickson (2-1, 5.52).Syndergaard is 0-3 with a 5.83 ERA in six starts at Nationals Park and is 3-6, 3.60 in his career against Washington in 14 outings.Hellickson was 1-0, 2.53 in two starts last season against the Mets, with both outings at Citi Field in New York. He is 3-4, 6.71 in his career in 10 starts against the Mets. Both teams were off Monday, a day after the Nationals didn't get a hit until one out in the eighth inning at Los Angeles against Dodgers lefty Hyun-Jin Ryu.Gerardo Parra, signed last Thursday by Washington after being let go by the Giants, had a ground-rule double to break up the no-hitter but the Nationals fell 6-0 and ended the road trip 3-7 against the Philadelphia Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers and Dodgers. The Nationals were also blanked Friday and have scored in one of the last 27 innings."We couldn't care less," Nationals second baseman Brian Dozier told The Washington Post. "A loss is a loss. It doesn't matter if you get zero hits and 20. At the end of the day, you chalk it up as a loss and move on." The Nationals won two of the first three games of the series against the Dodgers and may have taken some pressure off second-year manager Dave Martinez, who is coming under fire from many fans for the team's poor start. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic said Friday on MLB Network that Triple-A manager Randy Knorr and Mid-Atlantic Sports Network (MASN) analyst Bo Porter, the former Houston skipper, would be possible candidates to manage if Martinez was let go.Washington had been without four Opening Day starters before outfielder Juan Soto and third baseman Anthony Rendon came off the injured list during the road trip. Still on the IL are shortstop Trea Turner (finger) and first baseman Ryan Zimmerman (foot), not to mention backup first baseman Matt Adams (shoulder).Nationals outfielder Victor Robles has had his share of baserunning and fielding mistakes this year, but he is 3-for-4 off Syndergaard with two home runs. Soto is 4-for-10 (.400) and Rendon is 10-for-32 (.313) with two homers against Syndergaard.Current Mets hitters are 30-for-120 (.250) with seven homers off Hellickson. That includes Robinson Cano, who is 5-for-17 (.294) with two homers, and former Washington catcher Wilson Ramos, who is 3-for-11 (.273) with a home run.As for the Mets bullpen, MLB.com reported Monday that the team plans to active reliever Jeurys Familia off the IL. Familia had an 8.44 ERA with 11 walks in his previous 10 games before landing on the IL with right shoulder inflammation. Overall in 14 games he has a 6.28 ERA this year."We've got to get him back to the productive Familia that he's been in the past," manager Mickey Callaway told MLB.com.The Mets and Nationals have ranked at the bottom of the league in bullpen ERA for most of the season.-Field Level Media
