Yankees look to make it 2 straight over A'sFLMAlthough things did not go in their favor on Saturday, the Oakland Athletics did not feel too downcast about losing to the New York Yankees for the first time this season.The Athletics will hope to get a lift from Sean Manaea when he makes his season debut after recovering from left shoulder surgery Sunday afternoon against the Yankees in the rubber game of a three-game series at Yankee Stadium.Oakland is 4-1 in the season series with New York. The A's won four straight over the Yankees before Saturday but stranded 15, went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and were handed a 4-3 loss when Lou Trivino allowed a homer to DJ LeMahieu on the first pitch of the 11th inning."We've played really well against a good team," Oakland starter Homer Bailey told reporters following the game. "They've got one of the best records in the league. So when you're playing a team like that and you got two teams that both really want to win every game, you're going to lose some. You're going to lose some tight ones. That's sometimes just how it goes." Manaea is returning to a team that is 42-21 since June 16. Despite Saturday's loss, Oakland is 11-5 in its last 16 games and 23-17 against teams currently holding playoff spots."We're playing good baseball, we're doing all the right things, we're having good at-bats," Oakland's Mark Canha said. "A lot of those at-bats are going deep into counts and guys are battling up there. That's what you want to see I think. It just didn't go our way today." Manaea was 12-9 with a 3.59 ERA in 27 starts last season while also pitching a no-hitter against Boston. He injured his shoulder in August and underwent surgery on Sept. 19.Manaea will return after going 3-3 with a 4.71 ERA in eight rehab starts. His last rehab outing for Triple-A Las Vegas went really well when he struck out 12 in seven scoreless innings on Aug. 23."We just got to the point where we need to get him in a game," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "He was really effective his last time out. He's shown he can be a really effective pitcher for us." Manaea is 1-1 with a 4.58 ERA in three career starts against New York.The Yankees ended August by hitting four solo homers and finished the month with 21 wins in 30 games. Besides LeMahieu's game-winning homer, Gary Sanchez homered twice and Aaron Judge hit a game-tying homer Saturday.Judge also is heating up of late. During a nine-game hitting streak, he is batting .432 (16-for-37) with six homers and nine RBIs. He has homered in three of his last four games and six of his last eight games."Every win's important," Judge said. "They've kind of owned us so far in the season. We haven't beaten them at all except for today so it was an important game for us." Lefty J. A. Happ (11-8, 5.57 ERA) starts for the Yankees, having not completed six innings since July 30 against Arizona. Happ is 3-2 in his last five starts but also has a 7.30 ERA in those outings.Happ last pitched in Monday's 5-4 win at Seattle when he allowed three runs on two hits in five innings and struck out seven with three walks.
