Padres take on Braves without phenom Tatis The San Diego Padres were without rookie standout Fernando Tatis Jr. for the opener of their four-game series in Atlanta. It's not certain when the exciting shortstop will return.San Diego manager Andy Green said the club hasn't decided what to do about Tatis, who injured his hamstring on Sunday while making an awkward stretch to receive a toss on a force play. Tatis was able to get up and walk off the field on his own power.Tatis had a career-high three hits against the Nationals before his injury. He is batting .300 and leads the club in hits (30) and stolen bases (six)."He's on the active roster," Green said. "We prefer not to play him. We're not ready to make a final determination what it will be for the long run." Greg Garcia has taken the place of Tatis at shortstop. He started in consecutive games for the first time this season and Monday made his first appearance of the season at shortstop. Over the last four games, Garcia is 3-for-8 with a homer, two RBI, three runs scored and three walks. The pitching matchup for the second game is set. The Padres will start rookie Chris Paddack (1-1, 1.67) against veteran Atlanta right-hander Julio Teheran (2-3, 5.40).Atlanta won the series opener 3-1 on Monday. San Diego has won only one game in Atlanta since 2016, going 1-11 in that time.Paddack has been outstanding. Among pitchers who have thrown at least 25 innings, the right-hander's .112 opponent batting average ranks first among all National League pitchers and his 1.67 ERA ranks third.Paddack made his major league debut on March 31 in the series finale against San Francisco. In front of four family members, Paddack retired the first 10 batters he faced, but did not figure in the 3-1 win. He allowed only one run on two hits and struck out seven. The Padres expected this sort of results. In 37 career appearances in the minor leagues, Paddack had a 1.82 ERA with 230 strikeouts and only 20 walks in 177 2/3 innings. This will be the first time he has faced Atlanta.Teheran bounced back from a poor performance at Cleveland to throw six solid innings against the Reds in his last start. He allowed three runs on five hits and three walks, striking out seven. He lost both those starts. He tried to throw more two-seam fastballs against the Reds, particularly against left-handed hitters."When I try to throw it like my four-seamer, that's when it moves better," he said. "When I try to make it move, that's when it comes back to the middle of the plate." Teheran will be making his 11th career start against San Diego. He is 5-3 with a 3.73 ERA against the Padres. He was 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA in two starts against the Padres last season. The Braves made a roster move on Monday. They placed right-handed reliever Chad Sobotka on the 10-day injured list with a left abdominal strain and recalled left-hander Grant Dayton from Triple-A Gwinnett.--Field Level Media
