Young NorCal products take mound for Giants, PadresFLMSan Francisco Giants right-hander Logan Webb is scheduled to make his home debut Saturday night in a duel against another former Northern California prep standout, San Diego Padres left-hander Joey Lucchesi, in the continuation of a four-game series. Each team rode an impressive outing by a starting pitcher to a split in the first two games of the series. The Padres jumped on Chris Paddack's back for a 5-3 win on Thursday before Madison Bumgarner got the Giants even in an 8-3 triumph on Friday.Webb (1-0, 4.66 ERA) is considered to be one of the Giants' most promising home-grown products since Bumgarner debuted in 2009.The 2014 fourth-round pick out of the Sacramento suburb of Rocklin has made his first two big-league starts on the road, winning at Arizona before getting a no-decision at Oakland. The 22-year-old rookie right-hander has never faced the Padres.Meanwhile, the Giants will see Lucchesi (9-7, 4.11) for a fifth time this season.A product of the Oakland suburb of Newark, Lucchesi has gone 0-2 with an 8.10 ERA in two San Francisco homecomings this season. He wound up with a win and a no-decision in two head-to-heads in San Diego. The 26-year-old will take the mound on a two-start winning streak, having beaten Philadelphia and Boston, allowing a total of three runs and six hits in 11 innings.Lucchesi has started six times in his career against the Giants, going 2-2 with a 3.90 ERA.Lucchesi and Webb will get an opportunity to be fans in the series finale on Sunday, when the Giants are expected to give Pablo Sandoval what could be one final going-away at-bat.The popular 33-year-old currently is on the injured list with an elbow ailment that will require Tommy John surgery. The pending free agent who is staring retirement in the face got in some swings in the batting cage on Friday in hopes of being added to the lineup card when rosters can expand to 40 on Sunday."(He'll) test it out and see how it feels," Giants manager Bruce Bochy told reporters Friday. "If we have a spot and it works out, we'd love to have him off the bench. But we've got to make sure he's ready." Sandoval began his 12-year career as a Giant in 2008. He's played 9 1/2 seasons for the organization, recording 134 of his 148 home runs and winning three World Series rings.Padres manager Andy Green also found himself thinking ahead to Sunday, when he's likely to give starting catcher Austin Hedges a break. With San Diego placing backup catcher Francisco Mejia on the injured list Friday due to a strained right oblique, Green noted the door is open for just promoted Austin Allen to get some opportunities behind the plate.Allen, 25, has started 10 games this season and the Padres have lost all 10. Yet he remains in the club's long-term plans."How much opportunity he gets depends on how we play when he's back there," Green told reporters Friday. "He's done some really great things at Triple-A. He's worked incredibly hard behind the plate, swung the bat really well. For a little bit of time here, there's a window of opportunity to get on the field and play. We'll see what he makes of it." --Field Level Media
