Ailing Cain will likely sit again when Brewers host MarinersFLMThe Milwaukee Brewers were without center fielder Lorenzo Cain when they opened a three-game series against the visiting Seattle Mariners on Tuesday and they're expected to be without him again Wednesday.Cain made use of Monday's off day to fly to Los Angeles, where he underwent cryotherapy on his ailing right thumb Tuesday morning.Cain saw Dr. Vernon Williams, who has treated teammate Ryan Braun for a similar injury in recent years because of an overactive nerve in his hand.Cain has been dealing with the injury for weeks."It just got to the point where we have to do something a little more to give him a chance to get past the pain," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "He's dealing with it way too much. It has been affecting him, there's no question about it. So we'll take a try at this. It's been successful in Ryan's case a couple times."The goal is that (Cain) can swing a bat without thinking, 'I don't want to irritate my thumb.' Hopefully this procedure helps that." The Mariners took the series opener 8-3 as Marco Gonzales won his fourth straight start and Daniel Vogelbach hit a two-run homer.Seattle is scheduled to use a reliever as an "opener" on Wednesday before turning the ball over to veteran left-hander Wade LeBlanc (4-2, 5.44 ERA). LeBlanc is 2-0 in four appearances in relief of an opener, having allowed two or fewer earned runs in six-plus innings in three of those."Just give me the ball and I'll throw it," LeBlanc told MLB.com. "That's about all I can say." The Mariners have used four different pitchers as their opener, with a combined ERA of 19.50 in seven attempts. But LeBlanc, who is 4-1 with a 3.82 ERA in 12 career appearances against the Brewers, and fellow lefty Tommy Milone have pitched well backing them up."Everybody gets caught up in the first inning and what's going on there. And it's been a struggle for us," Mariners manager Scott Servais said. "We haven't found that guy yet to go out there and put a zero up there consistently. But overall, what you're looking for out of that is working. ..."At the end of the day, we get seven innings out of our starter and one other guy and it's two runs and we're right in the game. Go to the eighth and ninth inning guy and it's working."As far as Wade and Tommy being able to handle it, they've done a great job and it's helping them. We'll see where we're at going forward. It is a little frustrating right now in the first inning." Brewers right-hander Adrian Houser (2-1, 2.27 ERA) is scheduled to make his third start of the season. He has never faced the Mariners."Adrian is going to get a shot here to start. This isn't a one-time thing," Counsell said. "We're going to move him into the rotation and give him a shot to do this because he's earned it. He's pitched really, really well at the big-league level. That's how we see it. ... The goal was to get him back into the rotation and he's earned his way back." --Field Level Media
