Red Sox look for key hits vs. RangersFLMIn a game that began with a moment of reflection for the recovery of gunshot-wounded Red Sox icon David Ortiz, Boston manager Alex Cora couldn't help but think of the slugger -- his former teammate -- Monday night when his players had chances to win in both the ninth and 10th innings."This is kind of like what David used to do," Cora thought to himself. But while Ortiz was known for coming through in the clutch, the Red Sox failed to do so Monday, a continuation of a trend that has haunted them for most this season. Now Boston will look to bounce back after a 4-3, 11-inning loss when it hosts the Texas Rangers for Game 2 of a four-game series Tuesday. The Red Sox carried a 2-1 lead into the ninth inning Monday night before the Rangers rallied ahead on a two-run single by Nomar Mazara. Boston would tie the score on a pinch-hit single by Brock Holt in the bottom of the ninth, but Holt ran through a stop sign and was thrown at home trying to score on a double to end the threat. The Red Sox loaded the bases with two outs in the 10th but once again came up empty. Elvis Andrus drove in the game-winning run for Texas in the 11th, and Boston went down in order in the bottom of the inning for its fourth loss in five games."We had a chance to add on throughout the game, and we didn't," Cora said. "It's been the story of us the last month -- we haven't been able to put teams away offensively. We've got to do a better job." Including their weekend series with the Tampa Bay Rays, the Red Sox are 6-for-44 with runners in scoring position over their last five games. They will call up left-handed prospect Darwinzon Hernandez to take the mound for his first major league start Tuesday. The Rangers counter with right-hander Ariel Jurado (3-2, 2.78 ERA).With Monday's comeback victory, Texas has won 10 of its last 14 games. Danny Santana was square in the middle of the rally with his second four-hit game of the season."This win speaks to how this team has played all year," Andrus said. "We know we can pressure teams. We know we can come back. But every game is important. We know it's a great win, but not the fight. We have to stay focused on that." The victory was the Rangers' first at Fenway Park since 2016, while the defeat dropped the Red Sox to 15-16 at home.Jurado enters having won his last two starts. He gave up three runs in six innings against the Baltimore Orioles last time out, his third straight quality start. The 23-year-old will face the Red Sox for the first time in his career.Hernandez made his major league debut earlier this season when he pitched 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief against the Detroit Tigers on April 23. He is the team's seventh-ranked prospect, according to MLB Pipeline.Ortiz, who was shot in the back Sunday in the Dominican Republic, landed in Boston late Monday night and will receive further treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital. He was in stable condition.--Field Level Media
