Carolina Hurricanes re-sign depth forward Brendan Lemieux to $775,000 deal for next season

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - The Carolina Hurricanes have re-signed depth forward Brendan Lemieux to a $775,000 contract for next season.

President and general manager Don Waddell announced the new contract Monday.

Lemieux, 27, is the son of former NHL player Claude Lemieux and recently reached the 300-game milestone. He's in his first season with Carolina, recording three points and getting into three fights in 25 games.

"Brendan has brought an element of toughness to our lineup," Waddell said in a statement. "He understands his role with our club, and we're glad to keep him in Raleigh for another season."

The deal comes after a week in which the Hurricanes acquired two skilled forwards ahead of the trade deadline by getting winger Jake Guentzel from Pittsburgh and center Evgeny Kuznetsov from Washington in a pair of deals with Metropolitan Division rivals.

The Hurricanes have two home games against fellow Eastern Conference contenders this week, first against the New York Rangers on Tuesday and then the league-leading Florida Panthers on Thursday.
