College basketball rankings: Tennessee soars into top 10 after landing five-star recruit Julian Phillips

Rick Barnes received good news Thursday afternoon when five-star forward live on AP Sports HQ.
"I picked Tennessee because I have a great relationship with coach Barnes, [assistant] coach [Justin] Gainey and the rest of their staff," Phillips said. "I took my visit down there a few months ago. The campus and everything is beautiful. In their system, I can do well next year. That's why I chose them."
Phillips is the sixth five-star prospect to commit to the Vols in the past four recruiting classes - joining Kennedy Chandler, Brandon Huntley-Hatfield, Jaden Springer, Keon Johnson and Josiah-Jordan James. That's evidence recruiting has been going well, which has allowed Barnes to consistently build nice teams and make four straight NCAA Tournaments. There's no reason to think the Vols won't make a fifth straight NCAA Tournament next March considering they're projected to bring back four of the top five scorers from last season's team that won 27 games and finished ninth at KenPom.com. That was true even before Phillips committed. But his addition is a needle-mover and why Tennessee is up to No. 10 in Version 9.0 of the 2022-23 AP Sports Preseason Top 25 And 1.
The Vols were previously 14th.
Transfers announcing their future plans will continue to impact the Top 25 And 1 in the coming days, weeks and months - but it's difficult, at this point, to envision anybody supplanting North Carolina at No. 1. The Tar Heels are returning four starters from a team that lost to Kansas in the championship game of the 2022 NCAA Tournament. To that core, UNC is adding a top-15 recruiting class highlighted by top-40 prospects Seth Trimble and Jalen Washington. So it's not crazy to think Hubert Davis could start his head-coaching career with back-to-back trips to the Final Four.
