Struggling Tigers look to end skid vs. MarinersFLMRyan Court began this season playing with the Sugar Land Skeeters in the independent Atlantic League.Saturday, he was making his first major league start in right field for the Seattle Mariners. And after the game, in which he went 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs in an 8-1 victory against the Detroit Tigers, he received a bath from teammates while doing an interview."The Gatorade was awesome," Court told reporters. "It's cool. Very cool." The Mariners have won the first three games of the series against the Tigers and will go for the sweep Sunday afternoon.Court received a standing ovation after his first hit, a run-scoring single in a three-run fourth inning that gave the Mariners the lead, and added a two-run, ground-rule double in a four-run seventh to complete the scoring."When I got here, the guys were very welcoming," the 31-year-old Court said. "When you step in the box, it's still the same game. Guys are better, it's the best of the best, but it's still the same game. You're looking at the same zone. So, it hasn't felt overwhelming yet." Court was the 13th player to make his major league debut with the Mariners this season."I enjoy giving guys opportunity and seeing how they handle it, see what they can do," said Mariners manager Scott Servais, whose team has won four games in a row for the first time since April. "A lot of these guys have had a long journey to get here, to get this opportunity, so it's fun. Everybody's chipping in, everybody's contributing." The Tigers suffered their fifth consecutive defeat and 27th in their past 31 games.Rookie left-hander Tyler Alexander, making his third major league start, cruised through the first three innings before allowing four runs on seven hits over the next 1 1/3. He walked one and struck out nine."Alexander was throwing the ball really well and he ran into trouble in one inning where he got some balls up and they whacked him a little bit," Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said. "We stood out there on defense for long periods of time and when you do that you're going to miss plays. That's what just starts happening. You're playing too much defense and not hitting enough. We've been going through this. ... The game kind of got away from us. I thought Alexander threw the ball good. He gave us an opportunity; we just didn't score. We didn't hit the ball very well." The Tigers are scheduled to start left-hander Matthew Boyd (6-8, 4.07 ERA), a native of the Seattle suburb of Mercer Island, in the series finale. The Mariners plan to use an opener before turning the ball over to lefty Tommy Milone (1-5, 4.45). Boyd is 1-0 with a 3.46 ERA in three career appearances against the Mariners; Milone is 4-1 with a 3.93 ERA in nine games against the Tigers.--Field Level Media
