Marlins' Yamamoto hopes perfect start continues vs. PhilsFLMIf he extends his major league stay, Miami Marlins right-hander Jordan Yamamoto eventually will face the other 14 National League teams. But in the first two weeks since his promotion from the minors, Yamamoto is familiar with only two opponents.Yamamoto will attempt to build on his impressive early big-league tenure Saturday when he makes his second consecutive start against the Philadelphia Phillies, this time at Marlins Park. After the Marlins recalled him from Double-A Jacksonville on June 12, Yamamoto made an immediate impact later that day. The 23-year-old pitched seven scoreless innings and won his debut against the St. Louis Cardinals. He followed the outing with another seven scoreless innings and a victory over the Cardinals in St. Louis six days later. The Phillies ended Yamamoto's scoreless string in his third start on Sunday, when he allowed two first-inning runs at Citizens Bank Park. Yamamoto shut down Philadelphia after the two early runs and finished a five-inning performance with seven strikeouts and four walks while allowing only two hits.Miami, which went on to win 6-4, provided Yamamoto (3-0, 0.95 ERA) with sufficient offensive support for his third consecutive victory.Acquired from the Milwaukee Brewers in the Christian Yelich trade before the 2018 season, Yamamoto became the first Marlins pitcher to win his first three major league starts."I knew that wasn't me in the first inning," Yamamoto said of his performance against Philadelphia, according to the Miami Herald. "I just came back into the dugout and said, 'One pitch at a time. Let it roll.'"The Marlins hope Yamamoto's roll continues Saturday. Miami ended a three-game losing streak by defeating the Phillies 6-2 in the series opener Friday night. The win also extended Miami's streak to four over the Phillies after a three-game series sweep last weekend in Philadelphia."You never know exactly how it works and why, right?" Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. "You have trouble with certain teams. Other teams we've been better against. In general, we've thrown the ball good and it has kept us in games." On Saturday, Phillies right-hander Zach Eflin will start against the Marlins for the third this season. Eflin (7-7, 3.26 ERA) split the first two decisions. He took the loss on April 13, giving up a season-high 10 hits and six runs in four innings, then pitched a complete-game seven-hitter, allowing one run on April 28 in a 5-1 win.Eflin is 3-2 with a 4.46 ERA against the Marlins in his four-season career.Philadelphia ended a seven-game slide with a four-game sweep of the New York Mets at home earlier this week. Now, the Phillies will try to snap their recent losing streak against Miami."I think one thing we've missed a little bit is consistency," Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said. "We're a talented club from top to bottom. We have arms -- we have strong arms. We've got a lineup that's deep. We need to put it together more consistently." Before Friday's series opener, the Phillies activated right-handed reliever Tommy Hunter from the 60-day injured list and optioned outfielder Adam Haseley to Triple-A Lehigh Valley. Hunter pitched a perfect inning of relief Friday."It was a really good outing for Tommy," Kapler said. "We knew we weren't able to take him past 25 pitches. It was really nice to see him come out and be efficient." --Field Level Media
