I remember when I first came to prison back in the early ’90s and discovered the dopaminergic magic of playing parlay tickets. I was fascinated. Most of the older convicts who hit fairly regularly had USA Today Sports Weekly subscriptions and Phil Steele football previews with every stat known to man. They also all had their favorite self-proclaimed sports gurus who came on AM radio giving out “stone-cold, lead-pipe locks” after midnight. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, the yard would be abuzz with activity as everyone would gather under the pavilions getting their bets in. I was 19 years old and a sponge and it didn’t take long for me assimilate. After a couple seasons of winning and losing, it became obvious that the only dudes who won consistently were the ones running the ticket. So I became a ticketman. None of this has anything to do with this week’s Cell Door Locks. I’m just down to a few weeks on a long prison sentence and feeling nostalgic, I guess. The truth is that despite the gimmicky name and flashy logo, there is no such thing as a lock. Too many variables at play. Especially when pro athletes are getting indicted for point shaving every time you turn on the evening news. That said, instead of my normal five picks, this week I’m doubling up. And I’m taking my beloved Dolphins to beat the Commanders in Madrid. My time in prison is coming to an end. Might as well hang out a little. If I was home, I’d moneyline Jax and Det, buy a point and a half on everything else, and put ten bucks on a ten team parlay. (If this hits, I want my cut :-) May the force be with you my friends. Momentum!
