2025 NFL - Week 13 Cell Door Locks

Week 13...

I know I swore off talking about the Dolphins a month ago. Who wants to hear about a 1-7 NFL team with a coach that looks like Harry Potter, a defense that couldn’t stop the Florida Atlantic Owls, and an offense that is historically, well, offensive? I heard this story once on sports talk radio about a grizzled old Buccaneers coach who oversaw the abysmal years of that winless franchise back in the day. This is back when Steve Spurrier was the QB. Around that era. Anyway, when asked by a reporter how he felt about his team’s execution, he sarcastically quipped, “I’m in favor of it.” :-) I know the feeling. It’s hard loving a bad football team. But I do love my Dolphins. Unconditionally. I just resolved to stop talking about them on this page because we sucked this year. Until suddenly, we didn’t.

I think it might have taken a minute for some of the new players to acclimate to Anthony Weaver’s defense, but somewhere around the first half of the loss to Baltimore, I started seeing glimpses. Then we fired GM Chris Grier but hung onto HC Mike McDaniel. And despite the early noise and rumors about a lack of discipline, the team kept fighting. Tua stopped turning the ball over. The run D stiffened and the secondary got physical. Then we went on a three-game winning streak that included a thorough trouncing of perennial AFC East bullies, the Buffalo Bills. Now I’m looking back at the three games that we lost in the final seconds—Panthers, Patriots, and Chargers—and wondering how different things might be if the ball bounced in our direction at the end of those contests.

Regardless, we are now 4-7, fresh off a bye week, and home for the sputtering Saints. Even cooler, in the playoff graphic on TV this Thanksgiving, I saw where the Dolphins were listed as “in the hunt”(!) Are we going to the playoffs? Probably not. But at least we’re in the hunt and we’ll be playing meaningful football in December. “Something to love, something to do, something to look forward to.” This is what keeps a person moving forward during dark times. For me, that something is the Miami Dolphins. There were times during this long prison bid when it was just Momma and the Dolphins. Especially in the years before I started writing Consider the Dragonfly. Just wanted to acknowledge them here once more before I leave this place for good.

And by the way, next November, if the Dolphins happen to be on your television and you spot a bald, tattooed guy in a Jason Taylor jersey and a little old lady in aqua and orange ear-defenders roaring from the Hard Rock Stadium end zone, that’s me and Mom.
