Buenos Dias, Footballeros. Uncle Malcolm here. Or, if you’d prefer, “Nostradamus.” :-) We’ve been racking up W’s this week. Hope you’ve been reaping the benefits.

Quick story before I make these picks: When I was a free man I used to love going to the casinos in Biloxi and made the trip often between ’02 and ’05. This is before they had sports books. Most of my time—and money—was spent at the Blackjack tables and in the poker room. And I usually ended up driving back to Pensacola dead broke, coming down off cocaine, the morning sun in my eyes, worried that my house arrest officer might be waiting for me in the driveway when I got home (if I even had enough gas to make it home). What can I say? I am my father’s son.

But I noticed something interesting about myself way back then, and I’ve thought about it a lot over the years. Whether I won or lost in the casinos, my favorite part about Biloxi was never the winning. It wasn’t the comped food or the free drinks or the camaraderie of the people at the tables with the common goal of trying to beat the house... My favorite part was locking the car and walking through the parking lot up to those glass double doors, seeing the slots that lined the lobby along with whatever car they were giving away that month and feeling the night air bristle with possibility. Once I walked through those doors anything could happen! I might be driving home with 100k. You never know. This state of pure potential was my favorite part of the experience.

I had no idea at the time that this rush I was experiencing was dopaminergic in nature. It was all brain chemistry. Dopamine doesn’t care about the end result. It shuts down once we win or lose or attain the thing. (Think John Goodman’s character leaving the money behind and wandering off into the woods after the bank robbery in O Brother, Where Art Thou?) Dopamine is all about the buildup. Once the mission is accomplished or the journey is over or the chips are raked in, dopamine evaporates. And the emptiness that follows can leave you hungry for more. Not unlike a drug.

I’ve experienced a similar thing wagering on sports. I would place my bets, and then an hour later—before the games even started—place more. Why? Dopamine. I wasn’t really chasing money. I was chasing a feeling. I was chasing dopamine.

So... At the end of each of these posts there’s usually a little disclaimer about not being a sucker. I’m sure you’ve seen it. Sometimes I’ll riff about setting limits, only wagering what you can stand to lose, and how in-game wagering is the crack cocaine of the betting industry. But no matter what else I say, I always warn you not to be a sucker. Full disclosure: this warning is more for me than for you. And it has everything to do with dopamine. It’s a way of reminding myself that this is not a legit hustle, it’s really just rec, and that there is no such thing as a shortcut. (Or a lock for that matter.)

All right, now that we’ve got that out of the way—Cell Door Locks on deck. I’d say “Let’s kick Claude’s artificially intelligent ass a little more,” but we’re in agreement this time. As always, wishing you big momentum.
