You know how you can tell that I’m not AI? (Aside from the fact that I pick against AI every week?) Because there is no way that AI could love my beleaguered Dolphins as much as I do. There is nothing artificial about the lifelong relationship I’ve had with Miami. My family moved down there from Alabama in 1983, the year Dan Marino was drafted. I played Pop Warner football with Buck and Maceo Morris, sons of the recently deceased RB Mercury Morris. Back when the stadium was called Joe Robbie, I watched legends like Mark Clayton and John Offerdahl as well as utility man Jim Jensen show out on Sundays with my dad. I’ve written essays about my diehard fandom too. One appears in my book Letters to the Universe. It’s called “Aqua and Orange.” And sadly, it’s one of the few essays where I have to backtrack and admit I was wrong. In that essay, I applauded the end of the Brian Flores era and vociferously welcome new head coach Mike McDaniel and the incoming free agent signees—most of whom turned out to be unimpactful, dealing with major injuries, or no longer on the team. Under Mike McDaniel, I’ve watched the Dolphins turn into the softest, most undisciplined, finesse team in the NFL. Even when we were winning, Colin Cowherd repeatedly referred to us as “that fraud Miami.” Now I see why. We have placed an emphasis on speed over toughness and it shows. Especially when it comes to run defense. There is nothing more debilitating for an NFL team than when an opponent can just line up and blow you off the ball, play after play. That’s who we’ve been all year. When we’re not turning the ball over on offense. And this weekend, unless the Falcons have not been watching any film, I look for Bijan Robinson to have another career day. We are a team badly in need of a blue collar mentality and a premium placed on toughness. For all his flaws and grievances, Brian Flores gave us that. And I miss it. But there is a guy out there who may love the chance to roam the sidelines that Don Shula once paced. He’d also probably jump at the chance to take back over the AFC East. I’ll reveal his name after I go 5-0 this weekend. Cell Door Locks on deck.
