GAME PREVIEW
Feb 15, 2020Basketball has become a more position-less game in the past 20 years, tilted toward perimeter play. However, Iowa's Luka Garza and Minnesota's Daniel Oturu are showing there's still a place for the big man to play big in the college game.Sure, the two are capable of facing the basket and hitting jumpers from 3-point range, but the strength of their game is working hard inside and helping their teams control the lane. On Sunday, when the 21st-ranked Hawkeyes (17-8, 8-6 Big Ten) and Golden Gophers meet in Minneapolis, the big men will be working to control each other.Garza is on the short list of candidates for the Wooden Award and other national Player of the Year honors. The 6-foot-11, 260-pound junior is averaging 23.7 points, 9.8 rebounds and 1.8 blocked shots per game. In Iowa's 89-77 loss at Indiana on Thursday night, Garza poured in 38 points while grabbing eight boards and rejecting four shots.Oturu, a 6-10, 240-pound sophomore, is coming off a 32-point, 16-rebound effort Feb. 8 in an 83-77 defeat at Penn State. He is averaging 20.1 points and 11.5 rebounds per game to go along with 2.7 blocked shots.A student of the game who once called coach Richard Pitino to ask how many points Pete Maravich might average in today's game, Oturu said during a recent feature on Big Ten Network that Garza is one of the players he tries to emulate because of how hard he posts up on every possession.Pitino loves Oturu's work ethic; he just wishes he didn't have to call on it so much. Oturu is averaging 36.5 minutes in Big Ten games because Minnesota (12-11, 6-7) can't afford to be without him for long stretches."He's probably playing too many minutes," Pitino told the Minneapolis Star Tribune. "That's something we have to evaluate. I think he and Marcus are playing too much. He's fought through fatigue, and sometimes we have to ... get him a breather." Marcus is 6-2 sophomore point guard Marcus Carr, who's playing a whopping 38.5 minutes per game in conference action. Carr is averaging 15.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 6.7 assists. His worst game of the year might have occurred in the Gophers' first meeting with Iowa in December, when he made just 1 of 10 shots and scored two points in a 72-52 beating.Oturu and Garza battled that night on even terms, Oturu scoring 22 points and grabbing 12 boards to Garza's 21 and 10. But Garza's teammates also supplied nine 3-pointers and forced 15 turnovers.Iowa's defense wasn't quite as stout Thursday night at Indiana. The Hoosiers canned 45.9 percent of their field-goal attempts, including a sterling 11 of 21 from 3-point range, and earned a 39-28 advantage on the glass, thanks largely to 16 offensive rebounds."The key was that they got to the offensive glass and it impacted the game that way," Hawkeyes coach Fran McCaffery said. "When you do get stops, you have to get the ball. They're big and strong; it's what they do, and they do it well." --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 16, 2020MINNEOLIS Luka Garza scored 24 points and Ryan Kreiner added 10 points and No. 21 Iowa came back to beat the Minnesota Gophers 58-55 on Sunday.Minnesota's Daniel Oturu missed the front end of a one-and-one free-throw attempt with a chance to tie the game with 3.8 seconds left and the Hawkeyes (18-8, 9-6) came away with a rare road win in the Big Ten.Iowa trailed by eight points with 5:25 remaining but finished the game on an 11-0 run. The Gophers had five of their 13 turnovers during the final stretch.Oturu scored 15 points and Marcus Carr added 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists for Minnesota. Gabe Kalscheur 12, but the Gophers (12-12, 6-8) lost for the fourth time in five games.Garza was in foul trouble throughout. But Kreiner, in just his fourth start of the year with CJ Frederick out with an ankle injury, and Connor McCaffrey helped Iowa come back. McCaffrey scored all six of his points in the second half.Bakari Evelyn hit a pair of free throws with 1:15 remaining to give the Hawkeyes a 57-55 lead, its first since leading 21-20 in the first half. The 58 points are the lowest total of the season for Iowa.POLL IMPLICATIONSIowa should stay ranked after going 1-1 on the road during the week. While No. 23 Creighton won twice, including against No. 10 Seton Hall, No. 22 Illinois lost twice. Texas Tech at No. 24 and No. 25 LSU lost their only games of the week.BIG PICTUREIowa: Road wins in the Big Ten are hard to come by and the Hawkeyes boosted their NCAA standing. They started the day 30th in the NCAA NET rankings, the primary tool used to determine the NCAA brackets and picked up their sixth Quad 1 win of the season on the road against Minnesota, ranked No. 40 in the NET rankings.Minnesota: The Gophers missed a big chance to boost their tournament credentials and they are running out of time for more impressive wins. Minnesota lost its second home game in Big Ten play and now might need to beat Maryland at home on Feb. 26 or Wisconsin or Indiana on the road.UP NEXTIowa returns home for one game against Ohio State on Thursday night. The Hawkeyes then go back on the road at Michigan State on Feb. 25.Minnesota will look to bolster its tournament standing with another home game on Wednesday against Indiana.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 15, 2020A break from Big East Conference play will not be much of a respite for No. 15 Villanova, which not only moves back into always-rugged Big 5 play, but it will be tasked with a road game at Temple on Sunday. The Wildcats (18-6) have compiled a 3-0 record in Big 5 games this season, while the Owls (13-11) have gone 2-1 against fellow Philadelphia-area schools. The three other schools that participate in the informal league are La Salle, Penn and Saint Joseph's.Villanova is working its way through a rough stretch. The Wildcats are coming off a 72-71 victory over No. 18 Marquette on Wednesday. Before that game, there were three consecutive defeats against Creighton, then-No. 19 Butler and then-No. 12 Seton Hall.Villanova led by 18 points in the second half against Marquette, but the Golden Eagles came back behind Wooden Award candidate Markus Howard, who had 24 points. Wildcats freshman Jeremiah Robinson-Earl hit a clinching free throw with 4.8 seconds remaining. The deciding point was one of a team-leading 17 for Robinson-Earl, who also had 11 rebounds. Collin Gillespie and Jermaine Samuels had 14 points each for Villanova."We're growing," Villanova coach Jay Wright told reporters after the game. "But what's tough at this time of year is these juniors and seniors in the league have been in the Big East. They know it's getting to be crunch time. They know what to do. Our guys are still learning. We just have to find a way to gut it out -- to improve as quickly as we can. We have a lot of room for improvement." The Wildcats can work on some of that improvement against the Owls, whom they have defeated six consecutive times, including a 69-59 victory last season. Samuels came off the bench to score a team-leading 15 points in that one.Villanova has won the outright Big 5 title in five of the past six seasons. They already have clinched a share of this season's Big 5 title, but Temple can earn a share of the crown with a victory Saturday. The Wildcats have won 27 Big 5 titles. The Owls have been better of late, winning consecutive games in American Athletic Conference play and three of their past four. Before that surge, they had a four-game losing streak that included a Big 5 defeat to Penn.Quinton Rose scored 23 points and Nate Pierre-Louis had 14 rebounds for Temple in a 72-68 victory at Tulane on Wednesday. The Owls rallied from a 13-point deficit with just over 11 minutes remaining. Temple shot 50 percent from the field in the second half."We're trying to make a statement from here on out," Temple coach Aaron McKie said. "We have seven more (games), and we have to want to make a statement ... each game. We don't want to get ahead of ourselves. We have (Villanova) on Sunday, and we want to focus on that game, and the goal is to continue to win." Rose is scoring 16.2 points per game while Pierre-Louis is producing 11.2 points and 8.1 rebounds for the Owls. Temple forward De'Vondre Perry has missed the past two games with a foot injury, but McKie hopes he can return Sunday.Saddiq Bey leads a balanced Villanova attack with 15.7 points per game while Gillespie is at 15.6. Five Villanova players average double-figure scoring.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 16, 2020PHILADELPHIA Faced with a halftime deficit, Collin Gillespie and Villanova didn’t panic.Gillespie scored a season-high 29 points to lead No. 15 Villanova to a 76-56 comeback victory over Philadelphia rival Temple on Sunday.Jermaine Samuels added 13 points and Jeremiah Robinson-Earl had 10 for Villanova (19-6), which won its seventh straight game over Temple while finishing 4-0 in the Big 5.The Wildcats, hurt by early foul trouble to starters Justin Moore and Robinson-Earl, trailed by four points at halftime. But they took over after the break, using a game-changing 20-2 run over the first 5 minutes, 46 seconds of the second half to take control.“We were good, we were positive, we knew we had to make adjustments and stick to our game plan,” Gillespie said of the feeling at the break. “In the second half we made stops at the defensive end, and it gave us easy opportunities at offensive end.”Villanova made 7 of 10 shots, including 6 of 8 3-pointers, during the stretch while Temple was 1 of 8 from the field, 0 for 3 from beyond the arc and committed five turnovers.“Great second half,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “We just made shots. When that happens, any team is tough to beat. It started with our defensive effort in second half and that led to making shots. That together was the difference.”Quinton Rose scored 22 points and Nate Pierre-Louis had 16 for Temple (13-12).Temple was in good position to pull off the upset after the opening 20 minutes. But Villanova quickly erased a four-point halftime deficit by hitting three 3-pointers early in the second half, the last by Gillespie with 17:41 remaining put Villanova up 35-30.And the Wildcats continued to pour it on.Moore's 3-pointer with 14:14 left gave Villanova a 46-32 lead.Temple got within seven at 49-42 on Rose’s drive with 10 minutes left, but never got closer.FROM DISTANCEOutside shooting was a big difference, as Villanova made 17 of 36 on 3-pointers while Temple was 2 of 16 from beyond the arc.“It’s really been our Achilles’ heel,” Temple coach Aaron McKie said.Gillespie had a career-high seven 3-pointers.“He trumped us this afternoon,” McKie said.BIG 5Temple and Villanova have been the standard bearers of the Philadelphia Big 5, the yearly city round-robin series that also includes La Salle, Penn and Saint Joseph’s. The Wildcats already had clinched at least a share of their 27th title with wins earlier this season over the other three Philadelphia rivals. They are now tied with Temple for most Big 5 titles.“I’m very proud of that,” Wright said. “It’s something we’ll talk about at the end of the season. We never spend too much time during the season. It’s just the next game; we really work on that. It’s great, I’m happy, but at the end of the year we’ll look back and be very proud of that.”The Owls last beat the Wildcats on Dec. 5, 2012, and Villanova increased its lead to 51-43 in the series that goes back to 1914.BIG PICTUREVillanova: The Wildcats are third in the tough Big East with six conference games remaining. Villanova has a chance to finish strong in the league, as five of its six remaining Big East games are against teams that are the bottom five teams in the league. Villanova’s other conference game is a rematch at first-place Seton Hall on March 4. The Pirates defeated Villanova 70-64 on Feb. 8 at the Wells Fargo Center.Temple: The Owls’ best hope to make the NCAA tournament is to win the American Athletic Conference tournament and Temple could help itself with a better seeding. The top four league teams get a first-round bye in the conference tournament. Temple is 5-7 in the AAC and three games back of fourth-place SMU with six games remaining. If the Owls can’t grab the No. 4 seed or higher, they’ll have to win four games in four days in the AAC tournament to grab the conference’s automatic bid.UP NEXTVillanova: At DePaul on Wednesday.Temple: Hosts Connecticut on Thursday.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 15, 2020With a Mountain West Conference championship clinched, No. 4 San Diego State begins its final stretch of the regular season on Sunday at Boise State. The Aztecs (25-0, 14-0 Mountain West) overwhelmed New Mexico in the second half of an 82-59 rout on Tuesday, remaining the nation's sole undefeated team. The win, coupled with Utah State's victory over Colorado State earlier in the night, locked up an outright regular-season conference title for San Diego State -- its first since the 2015-16 season -- and the No. 1 seed in next month's Mountain West tournament."The hardest thing in basketball, obviously other than winning the Final Four, is winning a regular-season conference title because you have to do it over the whole season," Aztecs coach Brian Dutcher said in his postgame press conference. "And to have the title outright already with four games to play is an incredible accomplishment." San Diego State has plenty of motivation to avoid a letdown with one goal already reached, however. The Aztecs were projected as a No. 1 seed for the NCAA Tournament in the midseason top 16 reveal on Feb. 8.But with an overall strength of schedule of No. 119, per KenPom.com, San Diego State's margin for error in reaching a No. 1 seed is narrow -- if not nonexistent. The upcoming stretch might be the Aztecs' most difficult in Mountain West play, pitting them against three opponents ranked in the top 100 of the NCAA's NET rankings.Boise State (17-9, 9-5) is one of four teams vying for the No. 2 spot in the Mountain West tournament, tied for second in the loss column with Utah State, Nevada and Colorado State. San Diego State faces the Rams and the Wolf Pack in their last two regular-season contests. The Broncos have a NET ranking of No. 89 after beating Air Force 74-57 on Tuesday. A 44-34 second half sealed Boise State's win."You saw the ball move in the second half, and that's why we made shots," Broncos coach Leon Rice said in his postgame press conference. "It's pretty simple. And when we get shots for each other, move the ball like that, we're hard to guard." On the season, Boise State is ranked No. 81 nationally in adjusted offensive efficiency, according to KenPom.com. The Broncos' 53.4 percent shooting from inside the 3-point arc was 54th best in the country through Thursday's games, as they are among the nation's top 25 in both free throws made and attempted. In an 83-65 loss at San Diego State on Jan. 11, however, Boise State committed 18 turnovers to the Aztecs' nine. The Broncos shot 60.7 percent from 2-point range, but their 6-of-20 shooting from beyond the 3-point arc, compared to 9-of-19 for San Diego State, was a difference-maker.Such as been the theme for San Diego State in its perfect run thus far. The Aztecs are one of college basketball's best 3-point shooting teams at 38.7 percent. Leading scorer Malachi Flynn has made 54 3-pointers, matching backcourt mate Jordan Schakel for the team high.Schakel is shooting 43.9 percent from deep, joining Matt Mitchell as Aztecs north of the 40 percent mark.Although Mitchell did not make a 3-pointer in the Tuesday win, his 22 points pushed him past Kawhi Leonard on the program's all-time career scoring list.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 16, 2020BOISE, Idaho No. 4 San Diego State keeps winning, forcing coach Brian Dutcher to dig deep for creative ways to keep his team focused. After the Aztecs beat Boise State 72-55 Sunday, he revealed some of his slogans that keep the team on task.''Early in the year, we had five games in eleven days, so we were like, `Let's win five in eleven,''' Dutcher said. ''And then we had five games the entire month of December, so we said, `Let's win five in December.' And we did it. I told our team they don't hang a banner for twenty wins, so we hung a banner with four to go.'' His mantra changed after San Diego State (26-0, 15-0 Mountain West) wrapped up the conference regular season title, though his message hasn't.''I told our team, `Let's get greedy. Let's play for perfection,''' Dutcher said. ''If we're this close, we might as well play for a perfect regular season. Why not win three straight as a mini-goal to chase something other than seeding in the tournament? Let's do something special.'' The Aztecs, which own the nation's longest active winning streak, looked special in handling a Bronco squad that hadn't lost a home conference game since Feb. 27, 2019.Malachi Flynn scored 22 points and dished out six assists to lead San Diego State in scoring, joined by all four of the team's starters in double digits. Yanni Wetzell added 14 points and seven rebounds.Boise State (17-10, 9-6) struggled to find any rhythm on offense and finished the game shooting 41.2% from the field.''They wanted it,'' Boise State coach Leon Rice said of his team. ''It's not like they didn't show up either. They wanted it too much in some ways and let it get away.'' After wrapping up the Mountain West regular season title on Tuesday with a victory over New Mexico State, San Diego State didn't show any signs of let down. The Aztecs went on an 8-2 run to close out the first half and take a 40-26 lead into the locker room.Justinian Jessup led the Broncos with 22 points, while Derrick Alston added 12.All five of San Diego State's starters finished with double figures in scoring.POLL IMPLICATIONSSince moving up to No. 4 in the poll on Jan. 20, the Aztecs haven't been able to climb up any further. And that won't change after the three teams ahead of them - Baylor, Gonzaga, and Kansas - kept winning this week. However, Kansas and Baylor clash on Saturday, which could give San Diego State a chance to push even higher next week if it continues its winning ways.BIG PICTUREWith San Diego State's tournament all but booked, the Aztecs continue to build their case for a top seed. And Sunday's victory kept that possibility alive. Their weak schedule - one that only has two wins over teams currently ranked - means an undefeated regular season is the only path for a No. 1 seed, but a very realistic one.Boise State's long shot hopes of earning an at-large bid hinged on pulling the upset at home. Now the Broncos' tournament fate rests on making a run in the Mountain West tournament next month.UP NEXTSan Diego State hosts UNLV on Saturday.Boise State travels to San Jose Sate on Wednesday.

Feb 16, 2020BOSTON Derryck Thornton had 22 points, five rebounds and five assists, Jay Heath scored 16, and Boston College held off a second-half surge from North Carolina State in a 71-68 win on Sunday night.Nik Popovic added 14 points and eight rebounds and Jairus Hamilton scored 11 for Boston College (13-13, 7-8 ACC), which has won four of its last seven. The Eagles have not won back-to-back games since a season-high, four-game winning streak Dec. 7 to 21.Devon Daniels had 15 points and 10 rebounds to lead N. C. State (16-9, 7-7). C. J. Bryce and Jericole Hellems each scored 15 points, and C. J. Funderburk 10.The Wolfpack had won two straight on the road, but fell short of their first three-game ACC road winning streak in 16 seasons.Popovic was making his first start since Dec. 3 against Northwestern. BC guard Jared Hamilton missed his second straight game with an ankle injury.Popovic was making his first start since Dec. 3 against Northwestern. BC guard Jared Hamilton missed his second straight game with an ankle injury.N. C. State couldn't trim its seven-point halftime deficit under five early in the second half. Braxton Beverly's free throw made it 56-52 midway through the second and DJ Funderburk's dunk with 6:18 left cut it to 60-58.Daniels' 3-pointer with 3:45 remaining tied it at 6-all before Markell Johnson made a spinning layup 30 seconds later to give the Wolfpack their first lead since the game's opening minute at 66-64.After Thornton tied it with a pair of free throws, Steffon Mitchell got to the line and made 1 of 2 to put BC up by one with 2:02 left.Mitchell came up with a couple of key steals after that, both of which ended with Hamilton break-away dunks, to help seal the win.The last of Mitchell's steals came after Johnson lost the ball with 11 seconds left and the Wolfpack trailing 69-68. After a timeout, Bryce missed a desperation corner 3 as time expired.Boston College led 40-33 at halftime behind 11 points from Thornton.Thornton and Heath combined for 17 points to help BC take a 26-14 lead with eight minutes to play in the first. Daniels scored all seven of his first-half points in the final 6:11 to help N. C. State pull within single digits at the break. It was the only matchup between the Wolfpack and Eagles this season. N. C. State rolled to a 73-47 win in their most recent meeting last Mar. 9. The forty seven points were the fewest by an opponent in coach Kevin Keatts' two-plus seasons.BIG PICTUREN. C. State: An inconsistent stretch hasn't helped the Wolfpack's standing on the NCAA Tournament bubble. After three straight victories in late January and early February, N. C. State dropped three in a row before bouncing back with two straight wins before Sunday's setback. A tough back-to-back against No. 7 Duke and No. 8 Florida State could make or break the Wolfpack's dreams of a third straight postseason trip under Keatts.Boston College: With minimal hope of earning an at-large bid to avoid an 11-year NCAA Tournament drought, the Eagles' only hope is to finish strong and build momentum for an ACC Tournament run. GAME PREVIEW
Feb 15, 2020The 17th-ranked Oregon Ducks broke out of a mini-slump with a big second half on both offense and defense Thursday night in a 68-60 win over No. 16 Colorado, and they hope to ride the momentum to another home win when they face Utah on Sunday night. The Ducks (19-6, 8-4 Pac-12) reclaimed the top spot in the conference, sharing it with Colorado after the win. They've won all 13 games at Matthew Knight Arena this season, and they now have five wins when coming back from a double-digit deficit this season.Sophomore Will Richardson, who began the season coming off the bench, tied a career high with 21 points, and senior Payton Pritchard, Oregon's floor leader and a conference player of the year candidate, added 15 with a career-high 11 rebounds. The Ducks had to overcome a third straight game in which they went more than eight minutes without a made basket. That helped Colorado go on a 20-0 run to turn a 16-10 deficit into a 14-point lead in the first half.Oregon lost the other two games in which they went cold, against Stanford and at Oregon State. On Thursday, the Ducks still trailed by 12 early in the second half but turned things around."It didn't look good there for a while," coach Dana Altman said, "but the guys continued to grind it out and find a way." "All we did was put ourselves back in the hunt," Altman added, according to the Oregonian. "I told the guys it's right there, we have four at home, two on the road and nobody's ahead of us. You control your own destiny, and at this point in the season, that's what you hope for." Oregon edged Utah 69-64 on Jan. 4 in Salt Lake City, led by Pritchard's 19 points. Both Gach (24 points) and Timmy Allen combined for 43 of the Utes' points, with Allen collecting 19 points and 11 rebounds. The Utes had won two straight until being thumped 70-51 at Oregon State on Thursday night. Utah (14-10, 5-7) has lost seven consecutive games on the road.Branden Carlson's 13 points led Utah against the Beavers. Allen scored a season-low six points, well under his average of 17.9 points per game, which leads the team.Utah managed just 19 first-half points and trailed by 16 going into the second half."I thought we got complacent. ... A lot of standing on the perimeter," Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak said, according to the Salt Lake Tribune. "You can't score 19 points in a half, and we were in a little bit of a funk offensively. There's a different storyline for every game, and this one was a little new for us." Gach returned to action after missing four games with a right knee injury. He scored eight points coming off the bench, but as he gets healthier, he could be a factor on offense and defense, as he was before his injury. The sophomore is the Utes' second-leading scorer at 10.5 points per game.--Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Jason Zucker will play his third game for Pittsburgh on Sunday. His second game since joining the team has everyone in the franchise excited about the future.Zucker scored two goals in a 4-1 victory over Montreal on Friday. The 28-year-old forward was acquired from the Minnesota Wild earlier in the week in exchange for Alex Galchenyuk, Calen Addison and a conditional 2020 first-round pick. He'll get a chance to show off his offensive skills against the league's worst team, the Detroit Red Wings, in an afternoon home game on Sunday."(Friday), he was flying," center Sidney Crosby said to NHL.com. "He created a lot and got a couple big goals for us. He looked comfortable out there." Zucker had spent his entire career with the Wild. He had 14 goals and 29 points in 45 games with them this season. His best season was the 2017-18 campaign, when he racked up 33 goals and 64 points while appearing in all 82 games."I just think Jason is going to get more comfortable with every day that he's here," coach Mike Sullivan said. "You can see his ability to finish. He had two real good goals (Friday). We're excited about having him. He's only going to get better. I just think familiarity is going to help him." Zucker made his first appearance for the Penguins in a 2-1 loss to Tampa Bay, one day after he was dealt. He had a little more time to settle in for his second outing with the club."It's great to have that practice (Thursday)," he said to NHL.com. "Trying to learn the system a little bit more and just try to learn these guys and the way they play hockey. It'll be a learning curve still, but I'm excited about how the game went (Friday)." Zucker scored a goal in Minnesota's 4-2 win over Detroit on Jan. 22. His multi-goal outing for Pittsburgh was his first since he produced a hat trick against Tampa Bay last March.Pittsburgh has won 10 of its last 14 games, including a 2-1 overtime triumph at Detroit on Jan. 17. Crosby scored the game-winner on a power play.Pittsburgh also won the first meeting 5-3 on Dec. 7. Evgeni Malkin and Jake Guentzel each had a goal and two assists that night. The Red Wings have lost three straight and 13 of their last 15 games. They were defeated by Boston 4-1 on Saturday afternoon and need a victory on Sunday to salvage the finale of a four-game road trip.Darren Helm scored a short-handed goal in the first period on Saturday but otherwise the Wings were dominated by the Bruins.Detroit was outshot 41-26 and went 0-for-3 on the power play. Boston scored three of its four goals in the second period."Our power play really let us down again and we shot ourselves in the foot with the third goal there," coach Jeff Blashill said in his postgame TV interview. "We got the puck in the O zone and 20 seconds later, it's in our net, so we've got to make sure we do a better job of that." The second period has been a major problem for the Wings all season, forcing them to consistently play from behind."Generally, it's been not getting out of our zone, turning pucks over too much and then not getting your people on and off the ice," Blashill said of the second-period issues.--Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
The New York Rangers are on their longest winning streak of the season as they attempt to inch closer to a playoff spot in the crowded Eastern Conference. The competition level will significantly increase Sunday afternoon when the Rangers host the league-leading Boston Bruins.New York is on its first four-game winning streak since Oct. 30-Nov. 6, 2018, and is attempting to win five in a row for the first time since Oct. 31-Nov. 11, 2017. After a 3-2 home loss to Buffalo on Feb. 7, the Rangers were nine points out of the second wild card, and they enter Sunday seven points out.The Rangers began the streak Feb. 9 with a 4-1 home win over the Los Angeles Kings and then swept a three-game trip through Winnipeg, Minnesota and Columbus. After coming back from a two-goal deficit Thursday, the Rangers posted a 3-1 win Friday when Chris Kreider scored with 3:11 remaining."We think we made some great strides and just continue to play good hockey at a clutch time right now," New York coach David Quinn said Friday. "Obviously, last night, coming back the way we did, and then tonight, scoring late to win the game. We've talked about the fact that we've had to come together as a team over the last few months, and it hasn't showed more than it has the last few games." Kreider, who is among several Rangers on a hot streak, is a pending unrestricted free agent, so the front office needs to decide whether to keep him or trade him by the Feb. 24 deadline. Kreider enters what could be his final week as a Ranger with seven goals in his last nine games and 29 points (17 goals, 12 assists) over his last 28 games.Mika Zibanejad set up Kreider's goal after getting the tying goal and scoring in the shootout Thursday, and he enters with at least one point in eight of his last 10 games. Artemi Panarin also had an assist Friday and he enters with 77 points, the most by a Ranger through 57 games since Jaromir Jagr had 86 in 2005-06.The Rangers will face the challenge of stopping one of the league's top goal scorers in David Pastrnak, who scored his 42nd goal of the season during a 4-1 home win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday. Pastrnak scored his latest goal after getting a hat trick in Wednesday's win over Montreal.Pastrnak's goal came after Charlie McAvoy, Patrice Bergeron and Charlie Coyle scored in a span of 4:29 during the second period. Brad Marchand added two assists, giving him 50 assists for the third straight season, and he has four assists in his last two games."We had it tonight," Marchand said. "We could tell. We came out so hard, and we really controlled the play the entire way through the game." The Bruins hold a one-point lead on Tampa Bay in the race for the Presidents' Trophy and are 12-3-1 in their last 16 games since dropping three straight from Dec. 31-Jan. 4. During the last 16 games, they have scored at least four goals nine times.Boston has won the last three meetings with the RangersBergeron had a hat trick and Marchand had five points in a 7-4 rout in New York on Oct. 27. Pastrnak scored the tying goal, and David Krejci scored the game-winner 1:40 into overtime in 3-2 win on Nov. 29 in Boston.--Field Level Media

GAMETRACKERBOX SCOREPLAY-BY-PLAYRECLIVEBOX SCOREPLAY-BY-PLAYTWEETSSurging Bruins earn 3-1 win over RangersNEW YORK A loss in the seventh game of the 2019 Stanley Cup Final could have carried over to the following season, except the Boston Bruins’ strong culture has helped them remain at the top of the Eastern Conference standings.Charlie McAvoy, Charlie Coyle and Patrice Bergeron each scored, and the Bruins began a four-game trip with a 3-1 win over the New York Rangers on Sunday.“We expect to play well every night," Bruins alternate captain Brad Marchand said. “When we play well, we are going to win a majority of the games. We just hold ourselves to a high standard. We don’t accept losing in the room, or in the organization.”Jaroslav Halak made 25 saves as Boston picked up its ninth win in 10 games.Mika Zibanejad scored, but the Rangers’ four-game winning streak was snapped. Alexandar Georgiev made his third start in a row for New York and had 31 saves in his team-leading 26th start.Coyle scored the winner with a short-handed goal at 18:42 of the second period. The forward stole a puck from Jacob Trouba at the blueline and outskated everyone on the ice before converting a breakaway for his 14th of the season.“It takes a while to pick yourself up from that,” Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy said. “That was the big boost for us." McAvoy opened the scoring at 19:18 of the first period after a puck took an odd bounce over Georgiev's head. McAvoy tossed a shot near the net and the puck bounced off two Rangers skaters before finding the back of the net. McAvoy also scored in the Bruins’ 4-1 win against the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday.“I knew I hadn’t scored, but I wasn’t losing sleep at night,” McAvoy said of his 51-game goal drought to start the season. “It is nice to get a couple in a short amount of time, more importantly we got two wins on this back-to-back.”Zibanejad ended Halak’s shutout bid with a power-play goal at 9:52 of the third period. Artemi Panarin and Ryan Strome assisted on the play. Bergeron added an empty-net goal in the final minute.“They are a hard team, they defend very well, they have a ton of experience, they are deep down the middle," Rangers coach David Quinn said of the Bruins. “There is a reason why they have the most points in the league." The Rangers had an opportunity midway through the second to even the score when David Krejci was penalized for a four-minute high-sticking infraction. The Rangers’ power play has been one of the top units in the NHL, but failed to come through in the middle period.New York defenseman Ryan Lindgren was forced to leave the game after the Krejci penalty but did return to action after receiving medical treatment.“We are not going to score all the time but we couldn’t even create any momentum from it,” Zibanejad said of the extended power play. “It wasn’t sharp enough, can’t allow that to happen in an important game like that." Henrik Lundqvist dressed as the backup goaltender for the seventh straight game and hasn’t started since being pulled against the Dallas Stars on Feb. 3. New York has carried three goaltenders since recalling Igor Shesterkin from the American Hockey League for the second time on January 29th.NOTES: The Bruins concluded their 10th of 13 sets of back-to-back games this season … Boston is 8-1-1 in the first game of those sets and 5-4-1 in the second half. … Boston scratched defenseman John Moore, forwards Anton Blidh and Par Lindholm. … New York defenseman Tony DeAngelo missed his second straight game with an upper-body injury although Quinn expects him to return Wednesday. … Shesterkin was sidelined for a third straight game because of an ankle injury.UP NEXT:Bruins: Visit Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday.Rangers: Visit Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday.---More NHL: www.apnews.com/NHL and www.twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
The Carolina Hurricanes have been going through a stretch where they have played well enough to stay in the thick of the playoff chase in the Eastern Conference. But they're waiting to put it into another gear."You've got to kind of get that swagger back a little bit," Hurricanes coach Rod Brind'Amour said. "It starts with getting back to the basics and trusting your game. To me, it's playing the right way. Goals will come." So next comes Sunday's game against the visiting Edmonton Oilers in Raleigh, N. C.The Oilers are in a grueling part of the schedule and are simply trying to maintain some sort of stability. The Hurricanes made what they hope is a crucial statement with Friday night's 5-2 home victory against the New Jersey Devils."That's a step in the right direction," Hurricanes right winger Nino Niederreiter said. "We have (24) games left in the season, and we have to do whatever it takes to get there. I think the biggest thing for us is to play simple hockey, and we did that." The Hurricanes are playing the back end of consecutive home games. They have only two sets of two-game homestands this month."It was a good feeling, and we responded well," Carolina defenseman Brett Pesce said. "We're in the final stretch here, and we have to put together a bunch of wins." Goalie Petr Mrazek has been inconsistent across the past month. He's hoping his performance Friday night gets him untracked, though he has been sharing duties with James Reimer in a recent stretch."Every game matters from the beginning of the year," Mrazek said.Edmonton is coming off Saturday's 4-1 victory at Florida. The Oilers, who are wrapping up a three-game road trip with the stop at Carolina, are 4-3-0 this month. Saturday's game is the first of seven across 12 days for the Oilers."We have a crazy amount of games coming up," defenseman Matt Benning said. The Oilers have had a wide range of recent results, everything from an eight-goal outburst to being shutout victims in the next game. They've learned to move on to the next task and not dwell in the past."You got to shake it off and keep playing," right winger Kailer Yamamoto said. "Leaders in here are really good at emphasizing that." The Oilers received a blow with the seven-game suspension handed to forward Zack Kassian for kicking a Tampa Bay Lightning player earlier in the week.Edmonton remains without Connor McDavid, who after 30 goals and 81 points in 55 games has missed recent games with a quad injury. This will be his fourth consecutive game out of the lineup.Carolina right winger Sebastian Aho has an eight-game point streak. Aho and left winger Teuvo Teravainen have assisted on the same goal 27 times this season."The Aho line seems to be going pretty good, but we need more," Brind'Amour said.Carolina posted a 6-3 road victory against the Oilers in December, with Aho supplying two goals.--Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
The Vancouver Canucks will try to maintain their slim lead in the Pacific Division when they host the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday afternoon. The Canucks came into Saturday with a three-point cushion over the Edmonton Oilers, Vegas Golden Knights and Calgary Flames. The game against Anaheim is the only one in a six-day stretch for the Canucks, making it likely Jacob Markstrom starts in goal for the sixth straight game. He's coming off a career-high 49-save effort in a 3-0 win against the visiting Chicago Blackhawks on Wednesday."We've got to tighten up. We can't give Marky that much work on a daily basis," Vancouver forward Bo Horvat told reporters after the win. "He's a brick wall back there and it's nice to have, but we have to clean it up a bit." The Ducks were on the other side of a stellar goalie performance in their last game. They sent 44 shots at Flames goalie Cam Talbot on Thursday night and he stopped them all in a 6-0 victory, ending a season-high five-game point streak for Anaheim."We've got to have more jam in those games," Ducks coach Dallas Eakins told reporters after the loss. "You've got to find a way to get one more body to the net, or one more puck to the net. We learn from these. As much as you want to keep point streaks going, I think a kick in the rear end is good for you every once and a while." Talbot's only shutout last season came against the Ducks, and the same for Markstrom, who had 29 saves in a 4-0 win against visiting Anaheim on Feb. 25, the only win for Vancouver in a three-week stretch.Vancouver was the hotter team when it hosted Anaheim in their only meeting this season on Nov. 1, but the Ducks pulled off a 2-1 overtime win. Markstrom gambled and came out of his net on a breakaway by Ryan Getzlaf in overtime, but the veteran center pulled the puck away from the goalie and scored into the open net.The Ducks would follow that victory with a five-game winless streak and it would be another 2 1/2 months before they won two games in a row again.Scoring has been their Achilles' heel again this season. After finishing last in the league in goals per game last season (2.39), the Ducks have only risen two spots this season (2.47)."We're a team that's challenged to score goals, so we have to be on point right away defensively, and to a man, and that includes all ages on our team," Eakins said. "Not just our young guys, who we talk a lot about here, but our veteran guys have to be much better." Vancouver seems to have solved its scoring issues this season. The Canucks are ranked 10th in scoring (3.22) after finishing tied for 25th last season (2.67)."Sometimes, I wonder where the goals are going to come from, but we scratch and claw," Canucks coach Travis Green said.--Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Losses Friday by New Jersey and Columbus helped tighten up the Eastern Conference wild-card race. The Blue Jackets hope to further muddy matters by snapping out of an untimely funk with a win Sunday night when they visit the Devils in Newark, N. J.Both teams were off Saturday, a day after the Blue Jackets fell to the visiting New York Rangers 3-1 and the Devils lost to the host Carolina Hurricanes 5-2.The loss was the second in as many nights (0-1-1) and fourth straight (0-2-2) for the Blue Jackets, who had vaulted into playoff position by collecting points in their previous 10 games (9-0-1) to cap off a 28-game stretch in which they went 18-2-5.Entering Saturday, Columbus was tied for the final wild-card spot in the East with the Philadelphia Flyers and two points ahead of the ninth-place Hurricanes. The Blue Jackets were particularly frustrated with Friday night's loss. Columbus outshot the Rangers 36-28 but frittered away a four-minute power play around the midway point of the second period. They then surrendered the game-winning goal by Chris Kreider with 3:11 left in the game and the insurance empty-netter to Ryan Strome exactly two minutes later."We've been a team that found ways regardless of what was going on," Blue Jackets left winger Nick Foligno said following the game. "That's why tonight was disappointing. We probably deserve better." The loss continued an offensive slump for the Blue Jackets, who have been outscored 11-6 during their losing streak and have scored just 20 goals in the last 10 games. Columbus has scored more than three goals five times in 19 games since Jan. 1."We've got to find a way to be comfortable with the sticks," Blue Jackets right winger Oliver Bjorkstrand said. "We're fighting it a little." The Devils were unable to build on one of their most resounding wins of the season, a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings on Thursday night when New Jersey scored four unanswered third-period goals in a span of just four minutes. On Friday, the Devils were on the other side of such a flurry. New Jersey allowed four unanswered goals in a span of more than 43 minutes bridging the first and third periods as the Hurricanes blew open a close game."I just don't think we competed long enough and hard enough to give ourselves a chance to win," Devils right winger Kyle Palmieri said following Friday's loss. "We started going off on our own page and that's what caused the disconnection. It wasn't a great last 40 (minutes)." The game Sunday is the third of four scheduled meetings this season between the Metropolitan Division rivals. The Devils host the Blue Jackets again on March 23. Columbus outscored New Jersey 10-1 in winning the first two meetings in Ohio.--Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
The Dallas Stars have managed to create a gap between themselves and the bottom four teams in the Central Division, and they have the chance to widen the margin this weekend in Canada. The Western Conference club is locked solidly into a playoff spot with the St. Louis Blues and Colorado Avalanche -- familiar opposition that also helps form the division's upper crust.Dallas concludes its three-game series through eastern Canada against the Ottawa Senators on Sunday.Coach Rick Bowness' squad opened the Canadian swing with a 3-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs, benefitting early from goals by Denis Gurianov and Radek Faksa, then getting the game-winner from Tyler Seguin while on the power play in the third period. In a game that featured a multitude of Stars storylines, Seguin said plainly, "Pick something," when it came to discussing the win's narrative."(Roman) Polak for 800 games, (Andrew Cogliano) for 1,000, (Jamie) Benn one goal away from 300," Seguin said. "I'm in a 17-game goalless slump, and (Jason) Robertson's first game. So many storylines." Throttling one of the highest-scoring clubs while tallying on the man advantage for the sixth consecutive contest would also be featured on Dallas' list of accomplishments Thursday. When the teams met in Texas on Oct. 21, backup goalie Anton Khudobin stopped 19 of 20 shots, and Faksa and Joe Pavelski provided the offense as Dallas won for just the third time in the season's first 11 matches (3-7-1).Times are better now for Dallas, which was on pace for 52 points after that win during the slow start last autumn. On Saturday night, Seguin backhanded home a dazzling, highlight-reel dagger past Montreal's Carey Price as the Stars rallied for a 4-3 overtime win after trailing by three goals. The Senators have produced only three wins since the Christmas break, and their play over the previous 20 games won't be earning them league-wide respect anytime soon. After beating the Buffalo Sabres two days before Christmas, Ottawa has backslid to a 3-10-7 mark under first-year coach D. J. Smith. The only wins were 5-2 over the Calgary Flames on Jan. 18, once again over the Sabres in Buffalo, 5-2, on Jan. 28, and 3-2 over the Arizona Coyotes in Ottawa.Ottawa fell behind 3-0 just after the first half of Saturday night's game against Toronto, but battled back to make it a one-goal game. The Senators lost when the Maple Leafs' Mitch Marner clinched the win an empty-net marker with 1:14 remaining.Connor Brown scored his 11th, Cody Goloubef his third for the Senators and Craig Anderson relieved Marcus Hogberg in goal after the starter allowed three tallies on 16 shots. Hogberg is expected back in goal against the Stars for back-to-back weekend starts. In the Eastern Conference standings, the Senators sit above just the Detroit Red Wings -- possessors of an NHL-low 32 points.Smith liked the play of his team and Hogberg in Tuesday's shutout loss in Denver, but added that the play in the other blue crease was better, as Philipp Grubauer denied all 34 Ottawa shots."(Hogberg) played like our team played tonight; that was hard, and he played hard," Smith said. "He gave us every chance to win. Unfortunately, (Grubauer) was really good down there." --Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
The Toronto Maple Leafs have a chance to win their second game of the weekend Sunday night when they visit the rested Buffalo Sabres. The Sabres did not play Saturday night, while the Maple Leafs were defeating the host Ottawa Senators 4-2."The emotions will automatically be there because it's Toronto," Sabres captain Jack Eichel said. "The environment should be a good one. It's an important game for both sides. Obviously, we're trying to find points any way we can and put ourselves in the best position moving forward, and they're the same way. We just have to be ready to play. We know it's going to be a tough night." Jack Campbell played in goal for Toronto on Saturday night, and Frederik Andersen is scheduled to play on Sunday in his second game since returning from a neck injury.Since coming to Toronto in a trade with the Los Angeles Kings on Feb. 5, Campbell is 3-0-1, and seems to have solved the team's backup goalie situation."I think the boys have played really well, and we've gotten some big points," Campbell said after the game Saturday. "With Freddie coming back, it just gives us a lot of momentum. We've got a pretty busy schedule here, so we've just got to hit the reset button tomorrow and be ready to go." Campbell made 25 saves Saturday, some of them difficult."He made some huge saves," said Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews, who scored his 42nd goal Saturday. "I mean, you see him in there, and he's having so much fun. He just loves to compete and loves to battle for the guys. He came up with some big saves and obviously a big two points for us to pull out." The Maple Leafs have won two of the first three meetings with the Sabres this season, including one in overtime.Sabres coach Ralph Krueger was uncertain about his goaltender for Sunday.Carter Hutton, who has started six of eight games since Linus Ullmark suffered a lower-body injury Jan. 28, missed practice Saturday for what was termed "maintenance." The Sabres recalled goaltender Andrew Hammond from Rochester of the American Hockey Association on Saturday.Krueger said Hutton's situation was not related to a collision in the third period in the 4-3 overtime win over the Columbus Blue Jackets on Thursday."Carter, we're quite optimistic about his rehab day today, and there was a different action, actually," Krueger said. "It wasn't the hit that caused the situation we're battling with right now." Hutton posted an 0-8-4 record and .872 save percentage from Oct. 24-Jan. 30. He is 4-2 with a .902 save percentage since. He won his first six starts of the season, including two shutouts.Jonas Johansson would probably make his third career start if Hutton is unavailable. The Sabres assigned defensemen Zach Bogosian and Lawrence Pilut to Rochester and recalled defenseman John Gilmour. Sabres left winger Marcus Johansson (upper body) returned to practice and could be in the lineup Sunday. Right winger Michael Frolik (illness) missed practice and his availability was to be determined.--Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
The Winnipeg Jets recorded their fourth three-game winning streak of the season with a victory over the Chicago Blackhawks before falling short in each of their last two outings. The Jets aim to get back on track Sunday when they face off against the Blackhawks in the fifth contest of their season-high-tying six-game homestand.Captain Blake Wheeler scored to ignite a four-goal third period in Winnipeg's 5-2 victory over Chicago last Sunday. Wheeler added a goal and assist five nights later, although the Jets dropped their second straight decision with a 3-2 setback to San Jose.Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice told reporters Saturday that he is toying with the idea of moving Wheeler from center to his more traditional wing position. The 33-year-old shuffled to center on Nov. 8 in the wake of the injury to Bryan Little, whose season came to an end with a perforated eardrum."There's a certain energy burned for him at center ice," Maurice said of Wheeler. "You spend more (energy) especially with the style of game that he plays. Your wings get in on the forecheck especially if you change sides. Wings are far more important on the forecheck."At center, you've got to be patient in the defensive zone bringing the puck up the ice, so you're slowing your game down a little bit so you're getting your exit and into the entrance. So you miss that size on the walls." (Wheeler is 6-foot-5, 225 pounds.)Kyle Connor scored a highlight-reel goal on Friday to boost his team-leading total to 29 tallies. The 23-year-old has nine points (four goals, five assists) in the past five games overall and four (two goals, two assists) in four games against Chicago this season.Patrik Laine erupted for nine goals in nine games before being held off the scoresheet in consecutive contests.Laine told reporters Saturday that he thinks his team is pressing to create opportunities on offense."I think we're just skating with the mentality that we've got to make plays. Like (Friday) night, I think we would just turn the puck over too many times," the 21-year-old Laine said. "We should just get it deep and play in their end. But now we're trying to make plays at the blueline and in the neutral zone, and that's not the way we need to play." While Winnipeg sits three points out of the final two wild-card spots in the Western Conference, Chicago received a much-needed spark on Saturday as it snapped a five-game skid with an 8-4 victory at Calgary. The season-high goal total matched the sum total of the Blackhawks' previous five contests.Patrick Kane collected a goal and two assists to give him 25 points (six goals, 19 assists) in his last 18 games. The former Hart Trophy recipient has recorded six points (one goal, five assists) versus the Jets, highlighted by his four-point effort (one goal, three assists) in the Blackhawks' 4-1 win at Winnipeg on Dec. 19.Captain Jonathan Toews matched Kane with a three-point performance on Saturday. The 31-year-old is starting to heat up, with five points (two goals, three assists) in his last four games after being held off the scoresheet in each of his previous four."It's nice to see all four lines get on the offense tonight. I think that helps everyone's confidence," Toews said. "So we'll stick with playing the right way, doing the things that we know we have to do and playing with energy." --Field Level Media
