GAME PREVIEW
Feb 19, 2020The team with the league's best record returns from the All-Star break to face an opponent it has consistently dominated.Milwaukee visits Detroit on Thursday in its drive to clinch home court advantage throughout the postseason. The Bucks have disposed of their Central Division rival with regularity since the beginning of last season. They swept the four-game regular-season series, then duplicated that feat in the opening round of the playoffs. The first two meetings this season have continued that trend. The Bucks won at home 104-90 behind Giannis Antetokounmpo's 28 points on Nov. 23. The All-Star and reigning Most Valuable Player racked up 35 points in their first visit to Detroit this season, a 127-103 Milwaukee romp on Dec. 4.Things got testy in the last meeting, as six technical fouls were handed out. Antetokounmpo was angered by what he felt was over-aggressive play by the Pistons, particularly from star forward Blake Griffin. However, Detroit has a much different look than it did that night. Griffin is out for the season after undergoing knee surgery. Center Andre Drummond was traded to Cleveland early this month, and point guard Reggie Jackson reached a buyout agreement with the club on Monday.Antetokounmpo missed the last two Milwaukee games due to the birth of his first child. Milwaukee had a five-game winning streak snapped in its last outing on Feb. 12, losing at Indiana 118-111.The Bucks' superstar will be back in action at Detroit. The way this season plays out could have long-term implications on the franchise. He'll be eligible for a super-max extension this summer and could enter free agency following the 2020-21 season.Antetokounmpo addressed his future during All-Star weekend, saying that he plans to stick around as long as the team has great success."I can't think that far ahead. I'm just trying to focus on the moment and get better," he said. "But why not (stay)? I'm a guy that wants to be with a team for a while. As long as we're winning. And we're winning so far, so I don't think anything's going to change." Detroit's foreseeable future is all about rebuilding. The Pistons will be doing a lot of experimenting with their rotations the remainder of the season."Everything is going to be fluid because we're in a search-and-rescue mission right now," coach Dwane Casey said. "We want to see what we have." With Jackson placed on waivers after the buyout, the point guard position will be especially fluid. Derrick Rose will likely start Thursday's game but Brandon Knight, rookie Jordan Bone and Svi Mykhailiuk could also see time there over the remainder of the season.Casey doesn't necessarily plan to give his younger players heavy minutes. He feels playing time should be earned."The only way I think you build a championship-type team is to play the guys who produce," he said."If you just run them out there with no consequences for mistakes, no consequences for lack of discipline, no consequences for letting your guy blow by you, then you're not going to have very much when it's all ready to go (in future years). It's pretty simple from that standpoint." --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 20, 2020DETROIT Giannis Antetokounmpo had 33 points and 16 rebounds as the Milwaukee Bucks routed the Detroit Pistons 126-106 on Thursday night. The Bucks led 70-41 at halftime and by as many as 34 points in the second half. Detroit could never get enough stops to mount any significant rally in the final two quarters.Former Piston Khris Middleton added 28 points for the Bucks, who won for the 15th time in 17 games. Eric Bledsoe added 19 points and Brook Lopez scored 18.The Pistons have lost five straight since trading Andre Drummond to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Feb. 6 and were playing for the first time since buying out Reggie Jackson's contract. Christian Wood, one of seven players in the game who has played for both teams, had 18 points and 11 rebounds. Bruce Brown finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds. The game was lopsided early, with the Bucks leading by 14 at the end of the first quarter and 29 at the half. Detroit's 41 first-half points were only two more than Middleton (20) and Antetokounmpo (19) had on their own. The Milwaukee also had a 14-0 advantage in points off turnovers.TIP INSBucks: Antetokounmpo was called for a technical for arguing a third-quarter call with Milwaukee leading by 29. ... The win meant the Bucks still haven't lost back-to-back games this season.Pistons: Detroit had two former Bucks, Tony Snell and Thon Maker, in the starting lineup and three more (Wood, Brandon Knight and John Henson) on the bench. Middleton started his career with Detroit and Ersan Ilyasova has also played for the Pistons.BIG POSSESSIONThe Bucks had a chance at a 7-point possession in the third quarter, thanks to Wood committing a flagrant foul on a made basket. Donte DiVicenzo finished the three-point play and Antetokounmpo added a free throw after a technical on Pistons coach Dwane Casey. Because of the flagrant foul, the Bucks retained the ball, but Antetokounmpo was called for an offensive foul.UP NEXTBucks: Host the Philadelphia 76ers on SaturdayPistons: Visit the Portland Trail Blazers on Sunday

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 19, 2020Two teams with disparate goals will meet for the final time this season on Thursday when the Miami Heat visit the Atlanta Hawks. The Heat (35-19) start the final eight weeks of the season in fourth place in the Eastern Conference. Miami trails front-running Milwaukee by 11 games, but remains just 4.5 games behind second-place Toronto. Miami is 4-6 over the past 10 games. The Hawks (15-41) are in 14th place in the Eastern Conference. They start the stretch run with the third-fewest wins in the league, 9.5 games out of the final playoff spot. Atlanta is 4-6 its past 10 games and lost its final two games before the All-Star break. This will be the fourth meeting between the teams this season. Miami has won all three previous games and will try to sweep the series for the sixth time and first since 2012-13. The Heat won 135-121 in overtime in the most recent meeting on Dec. 10.Miami was represented by six players at the All-Star Weekend. Rookie Kendrick Nunn scored 16 to help Team USA win the Rising Stars Challenge. Derrick Jones Jr. won the Slam Dunk Contest, and Bam Adebayo won the Skills Challenge. In the All-Star Game, Adebayo finished with eight points and two rebounds and Jimmy Butler had four points and two rebounds."(Being an All-Sttar) hit me toward the end of the game," Adebayo said. "Just looking down the bench and on the court, you start to realize, 'I'm an All-Star.' It's a great experience for me. Just looking forward to being back in this thing. It's a good experience for everybody." Miami's Tyler Herro had to sit out the Rising Stars Challenge because of a right foot injury that caused him to miss the final five games before the break. Herro said last week that doctors said the boot he was wearing will be removed this week and his return will be sooner than expected."There's no more pain at this point," Herro said. "It's just being able to rest it and making sure the problem doesn't come back up." Atlanta's Trae Young is coming off a successful - and busy - All-Star Weekend. He had 18 points and a team-high seven assists in the Rising Stars Challenge, participated in the 3-point contest and posted a double-double (10 points, 10 assists) in the All-Star Game. He made a shot from halfcourt to end the first half and set off a raucous celebration."They were all hyped for me," Young said. "Then I saw Joel (Embiid) just start running toward me and I had to try to run away. I didn't want to get tackled by him." Young will try to pick up where he left off before the break. He is averaging 29.7 points, 9.2 assists and 4.4 rebounds in 50 games. Those numbers are better than those posted during his rookie season, when he averaged 19.1 points, 8.1 assists and 3.7 rebounds.Young's numbers against Miami haven't been great. In six career appearances against the Heat, Young is averaging 16.7 points and 7.7 assists. He is averaging 13 points in two games against Miami this season.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 20, 2020ATLANTA Trae Young didn't attribute his first 50-point game to confidence gained from his first All-Star start.Belief in himself has never been a problem for the high-scoring guard with a fondness for 30-foot jumpers.Young had a career-high 50 points and the Atlanta Hawks scored the last 10 points of the game to beat the Miami Heat 129-124 on Thursday night.Young made 18 of 19 free throws and 8 of 15 3-pointers to set his scoring high in his first game after starting in the NBA All-Star Game.''I've always had confidence in myself,'' Young said when asked if he was boosted by the All-Star Game experience.Young scored 20 points in the final period.''A big game from our leader,'' said Atlanta's John Collins. ''... We got some big plays from our big-time guy.'' The Heat had no answer for Young's barrage of 3-pointers, many from well beyond the line.''He just got into such an incredible rhythm,'' said Miami coach Erik Spoelstra. ''He's pulling up from six feet behind the line. ... There's not a lot of things you can do about that.'' Bam Adebayo had 28 points and a season-high 19 rebounds for Miami. Adebayo, the NBA All-Star skills champion, added seven assists.Miami couldn't hold a 124-119 lead. After De'Andre Hunter's tying 3-pointer, Cam Reddish scored with 31 seconds remaining following his steal from Goran Dragic to give the Hawks a 126-124 lead. Young's two free throws increased the lead to four points.Kevin Huerter and Hunter each scored 17 points for Atlanta.Young hit a jumper for Atlanta's first field goal of the final period. On the Hawks' next possession, Young's crossover dribble had Andre Iguodala on his heels, and Young then sank a long 3-pointer for a 97-all tie.''He's shooting 50-footers,'' Adebayo said. ''At the end of the day you've got to live with that.'' With Hawks fans still buzzing after watching Young's knee-buckling fake on replays during a timeout, Iguodala answered with back-to-back baskets, including a 3-pointer, as Miami reclaimed the lead.Young wasn't finished. He kept the Hawks close by scoring 14 of Atlanta's first 18 points of the final period. Young's three-point play tied the game at 119-all.Miami led 36-32 after the first period before a shooting drought in the second quarter as Atlanta took the lead with a 15-0 run. After trailing 41-37, Atlanta led 52-41 after the run, capped by Hunter's 3-pointer.TIP-INSHeat: Fresh off winning the All-Star dunk contest, Derrick Jones Jr. was replaced in the starting lineup by Jae Crowder. The move was part of a roster adjustment with C Meyers Leonard (left ankle sprain) held out.Hawks: Young's previous high mark was 47 points at Indiana on Nov. 29. ... C Clint Capela (plantar fasciitis) has started some shooting practice and his recovery will be evaluated in two weeks. Capela and F Skal Labissiere (left knee) were acquired at this month's trade deadline. Labissiere also will evaluated in two weeks. ... Huerter's status was in doubt until pregame warmups following his allergic reaction to a meal.SLUMP FOR HEATMiami has lost five of its last six games. ''We'll figure it out,'' said Jimmy Butler, who had 17 points, nine assists and eight rebounds. ''We've got nothing but time. ... I'm confident in our group.'' ROAD WOESMiami is 22-3 at home but fell to 13-17 on the road. ''We've just got to win on the road,'' Adebayo said. ''Plain and simple.'' Spoelstra blamed the defense after the Hawks made 16 of 35 3s and 48.2% of their overall field goal attempts (41 of 85).''We have to focus in on closing games out and doing it on the defensive end,'' said Crowder, who had 14 points.UP NEXTHeat host Cleveland on Saturday night.Hawks host Dallas on Saturday night.---More NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 19, 2020Technically, the Chicago Bulls and Charlotte Hornets still have a chance to make the playoffs. However, either team would have to make a strong turnaround if it wants to avoid an early summer. After a week off, the clubs will begin the post-All-Star break portion of their schedules when they meet Thursday night in Chicago. It is the fourth and final meeting of the season for the teams, with Charlotte holding a 2-1 edge so far.The Bulls will try to bounce back after sliding into the break on a six-game losing streak. The Hornets won their past two games after winning just one of the previous 14.Chicago has been depleted by injuries but potentially could welcome back forward/center Wendell Carter Jr. against the Hornets.Carter, 20, has not played since Jan. 6 against the Dallas Mavericks because of a high ankle sprain. He is averaging 11.7 points and 9.9 rebounds through 37 games this season, his second in the league."We still have a chance to make it to the playoffs, but if not, all it's gonna do is help us set the tone for next year," Carter told reporters recently. "These last ... games we should take very seriously, and no matter what the fans, no matter what people outside this organization are saying, we still have a shot. So I feel like it's very important to play hard." The first two meetings between the Bulls and Hornets were decided by one point apiece. Charlotte emerged with a 126-125 win on its home court in the season opener Oct. 23. The teams met in Charlotte again Nov. 23, with the Bulls holding on for a 116-115 victory. In the teams' third meeting Dec. 13 in Chicago, the Hornets pulled away for an 83-73 win. Devonte' Graham scored 16 points to lead Charlotte, and Zach LaVine and Ryan Arcidiacono scored 12 apiece to pace the Bulls. One player who might feel especially good heading into tipoff is the Hornets' Miles Bridges, who is coming off winning Most Valuable Player in the NBA's Rising Stars game during All-Star weekend. Bridges helped Team USA rally for a win over Team World on the Bulls' home court. The Hornets entered the break with back-to-back road wins over the Detroit Pistons and Minnesota Timberwolves, but general manager Mitch Kupchak and others know that significant work remains in order to end a playoff drought that is three seasons and counting."I get a good feeling about this group going forward," Kupchak said in comments published by the Charlotte Observer. "Having said that, I wasn't brought here for us to have a good feeling. We've got to get somewhere." Carter is not the only player sidelined for the Bulls. They also have been without Lauri Markkanen, Otto Porter Jr., Kris Dunn and others because of injuries during the past couple months."I feel like before me and Lauri got hurt, we were on a steady pace to get in the bottom half of the playoffs, and now that we've been hurt, it's kind of put that to the side," Carter told reporters. "Now it's just more so getting the team healthy, just trying to get everybody right, and then we can focus on making it to the playoffs again." --Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 19, 2020The Philadelphia 76ers will be searching for their 26th victory in 28 home games when they host the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday. The Sixers also will be looking for their fourth win in a row.Philadelphia entered the All-Star break with some momentum as they defeated the Memphis Grizzlies, Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Clippers to snap a four-game losing streak.Despite a 9-19 record on the road, the Sixers continue to sparkle in Philadelphia, where they have the best home mark in the league."We love to compete and you see that from everybody on the floor," said Ben Simmons, one of the Sixers' two All-Stars along with Joel Embiid. "They (bench) love to come in and compete and hustle and make those plays and it's kind of just trickling down to everybody on the team. We're setting a standard for everybody and everyone has to hold themselves to that standard. If not, you're going to fall behind." Before the win over the Clippers, Sixers head coach Brett Brown shook up his lineup by sending veteran Al Horford to the bench. Aside from four games as a rookie, it was the first time in Horford's storied career that he entered as a substitute. The result was a win over a championship-caliber team."I said that this starting group has been struggling and that he had done nothing wrong," Brown said of Horford. "I keep myself up late at night trying to find ways to better coach it and fix and let it co-exist. To date, after 50-plus games, we've struggled a little bit. I feel like I can help Al play at the level that he can play at and that we have seen."I think it can be a win-win. It was all class. He's a great teammate and he understood. It was a high-level adult conversation that I appreciate and respect." The Nets won their final two games before the break but go to Philadelphia with a subpar 9-16 road record. And they'll also be competing without star guard Kyrie Irving, who's out indefinitely after aggravating a right shoulder injury. Irving missed 26 games with this injury earlier this season has been sidelined for 33 of 53 games on the season."He's still having issues with his shoulder. He is going to see a specialist this week. That's about all I can tell you," Nets head coach Kenny Atkinson said. "I don't expect him to be available for Thursday. His shoulder continues to bother him. That's kind of the extent of it for now." Already without Kevin Durant, the Nets will have a daunting challenge without Irving to become just the third team to win at Philadelphia this season. But it's the only option they have - to simply play hard with their healthy players."Ky is one of the most positive people I've ever been around this whole process of me knowing him, meeting him since he signed. I'm sure it's just another testament to his book," Taurean Prince told the New York Post. "It's time for other guys to step up and be the players that they feel they want to be along with trying to help us win as many games as possible down the stretch." --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 20, 2020PHILADELPHIA Joel Embiid had 39 points and 16 rebounds, Alec Burks and Shake Milton added big baskets in overtime and the Philadelphia 76ers extended their dominance at home with a 112-104 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night.Playing without All-Star point guard Ben Simmons because of lower back tightness, Philadelphia improved its record at the Wells Fargo Center to 26-2 on the season. The 76ers are 9-19 on the road.Tobias Harris added 22 points and 12 boards for the 76ers. Burks added 19 points, including a pair of layups in overtime that gave Philadelphia the lead for good.Caris LeVert scored 25 points and Spencer Dinwiddie had 22 for Brooklyn, which announced before the game that Kyrie Irving would have season-ending surgery on his right shoulder. It was a night of extended runs that started with Philadelphia breaking out of the gate to a 22-6 lead, only for the Nets to follow with a 44-8 stretch that helped them to a 52-42 halftime lead.Embiid would start to assert more of a presence early in the second half, controlling the game from the paint and helping the Sixers get back within 78-77.Dinwiddie hit a fadeaway jumper with 30 seconds left in regulation to give Brooklyn a 103-101 lead, then fouled Embiid at the other end with 16.2 to play. Embiid hit both foul shots to even the score and Brooklyn played for the last shot, but Wilson Chandler's layup at the rim after a pass from Dinwiddie was knocked away by Embiid just as the horn sounded to send the game to overtime. After Dinwiddie hit one of two free throws to give Brooklyn a 104-103 lead, the 76ers went on a 9-0 run with Burks hitting two running layups and Milton converting a pass from Harris in the lane into an easy basket.TIP-INSSixers: Simmons played in Sunday night's All-Star Game in a reserve role for LeBron James' squad. Simmons is officially listed as day-to-day. In his place, Raul Neto started at the point guard spot. It is the third game this season that Simmons has missed. He injured the AC joint in his shoulder in November and missed two games.Nets: With the loss of Irving, the Nets will have to make a run to the playoffs with a starting lineup of Joe Harris, Taurean Prince, Jarrett Allen, LeVert and Dinwiddie. ''I think our players have done a great job with that,'' Nets coach Kenny Atkinson said before the game. ''I don't think they feel anything like that at all. They look at is as a challenge and an opportunity to do something special. I've been so pleased with the spirit and attitude. The spirit is really good in there and I think these guys want to surprise some people.'' GAME PREVIEW
Feb 19, 2020The Sacramento Kings hope to get on the right track and gain ground in the Western Conference standings Thursday as they host one of the hottest teams in the NBA and the current eighth-placed Memphis Grizzlies. The Kings are coming off a Feb. 12 loss to the Dallas Mavericks, and although they protected the ball and only committed five turnovers, their poor shooting and inability to play consistent defense was the deciding factor.Sacramento shot 41.4 percent to Dallas' 56.5 percent and a dismal 30.8 percent from 3-point range."For some reason, we didn't feel the need to try to play much defense tonight," said coach Luke Walton after the loss. "We couldn't stop their top guys and when we did, it just didn't feel like we had the passion and desire that it takes to win, especially on the road, in this league." Memphis hopes to stay the course with its winning ways. The Grizzlies are 8-2 in their last 10 games, and rookie sensation Ja Morant has scored 20 or more points in three of the last four games, including a 27-point, 10-rebound, 10-assist triple-double Feb. 9 vs. the Washington Wizards. The Grizzlies posted a 111-104 win over the Portland Trail Blazers right before All-Star break. In the win over Portland, rookie forward Brandon Clarke had a career-high-tying and game-high 27 points off the bench while shooting a remarkable 12-of-14 from the field."That's my job really: try to find a way to come in and help us out," said Clarke. "Running the floor, getting stops, and that's what the bench came in and did tonight." This will be the third game of the four-game season series between the Kings and Grizzlies. They are currently tied at 1-1, with each team winning on their homecourt. The Kings edged the Grizzlies 128-123 in their previous Jan. 2 matchup.Sacramento overcame a 20-point deficit, led by De'Aaron Fox's 27 points, and newly crowned 3-Point Shootout champion Buddy Hield added 26 points while shooting 5-for-9 from distance. On the other side, the Grizzlies had six players score in double digits, led by Morant's 23.After that matchup, both franchises sat at 13-22, but since then, the Grizzlies have gone 15-4 and turned into a competitive force. The Kings, however, have stayed even keel, going 8-11.On the Grizzlies injury front, Justise Winslow (back) has only played 11 games all season and has yet to make his Grizzlies debut since being acquired from the Miami Heat earlier this month. Winslow is expected to return this season.Meanwhile, Grayson Allen (hip) is still out and possibly could miss the remainder of the season. For the Kings, Jabari Parker (shoulder) is expected to make his team debut Thursday after being a full participant at practice Wednesday. Also acquired in a trade earlier this month, Parker last played Jan. 3 while still with the Atlanta Hawks.Alex Len (hip) has been ruled out despite being a full participant Wednesday. Len, also acquired from the Hawks, last played Jan. 24. Richaun Holmes (shoulder) is out and will be re-evaluated in 1-2 weeks.--Field Level Media

Harrison Barnes scored a season-high 32 points and matched his career high with seven 3-pointers, De’Aaron Fox added 26 and the Sacramento Kings beat the Memphis Grizzlies 129-125 on Thursday night.Buddy Hield added 20 points, including four free throws in the final seconds. Kent Bazemore scored 18 as the Kings won their fourth straight against the Grizzlies at home.De’Anthony Melton scored 24 and Ja Morant had 19 for the Grizzlies.Memphis trailed by 15 early in the fourth quarter but took advantage of Sacramento’s struggles at the free throw line and caught a break when Melton was fouled by Barnes attempting a 3-pointer with 7.5 seconds remaining.Melton made all three free throws to pull the Grizzlies within 125-124.After Hield sank two free throws, Morant made one then intentionally threw the second off the front of the rim but was called for a lane violation.Hield, who won the 3-point contest on All-Star Saturday night, made two more free throws to seal the win for the Kings. The Kings looked fresh coming off the All-Star break, particularly Barnes.Sporting a much more noticeable beard that he intends to keep until Sacramento gets to .500 or the season ends, Barnes made his first four shots and eight of 10 while going 6 for 6 on 3s in the first half, including a buzzer beater that made it 70-61.GOOD CHALLENGESacramento led 117-113 when Fox was whistled for his fourth foul. After Kings coach Luke Walton challenged the call and it was overturned, Fox made a step-back 3-pointer.TIP-INSGrizzlies: Memphis is winless in Sacramento since Dec. 31, 2017. … The Grizzlies are 8-2 when Kyle Anderson starts. GAME PREVIEW
Feb 19, 2020The Houston Rockets are expected to trot out an even newer lineup Thursday night when they return from the All-Star break to face the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco.Since last seen beating the Boston Celtics 116-105 on Feb. 11, the Rockets have agreed to terms with forwards Jeff Green and DeMarre Carroll, each of whom had been cut by a fellow Western Conference playoff contender.Green signed a 10-day contract Wednesday, giving him in essence a four-game tryout to see how well he fits into the Rockets' system. He practiced with his new team for the first time Wednesday in San Francisco.Green was waived by the Utah Jazz in December after averaging 7.8 points in 30 games.Carroll was waived by the San Antonio Spurs earlier this week after agreeing to a contract buyout. Carroll (2.2-point average in 15 games) had to clear waivers before signing with the Rockets. That announcement is expected by Thursday.Rockets coach Mike D'Antoni, whose team has the fifth-best record in the Western Conference (34-20), admitted there might be a feeling-out period for his rearranged cast."We're trying to get better. At the same time, we have to win games," he expressed to reporters Wednesday. "We want to get a good seed if possible. The most important thing is to get the team right and playing well as we go into the playoffs. The second thing is to get a good seed. Our objective is to do both." The Rockets went into the break having won five of seven to move 1 1/2 games ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Dallas Mavericks. They've gone 2-2 since trading big man Clint Capela to the Atlanta Hawks in a four-team deal that netted forward Robert Covington from the Minnesota Timberwolves.Covington averaged 12.3 points and 6.3 rebounds in those four games, shooting 11-for-32 (34.4 percent) from 3-point range. The Rockets have attempted 40 or more 3-pointers in nine straight games, including all four since Covington has been adding an average of eight per game to the total. They made 21 of 45 when they beat Golden State 129-112 at home in November but then made just 16 of 51 in a Christmas Day loss in San Francisco. The Warriors took a four-game losing streak into the break, and due in part to having had the past seven days off, haven't won a home game in over a month. They've gone 0-4 at their new home venue since beating the Orlando Magic on Jan. 18.Golden State (12-43), which has two fewer wins than any other team, enters the final 27 games counting the days until the arrival of three key players -- Stephen Curry from his broken hand, Klay Thompson from his torn ACL, and an expected high draft pick in June.Curry, who sustained his injury in the fourth game of the season in October, is scheduled for an examination next Friday. He is expected at that point to get a green light to return to practice, and shortly thereafter to games.Thompson probably won't be back this season. The recent addition of Andrew Wiggins and the upcoming draft pick, whoever it might be, had Warriors owner Joe Lacob gushing about a bright future during the All-Star break."You add one guy and it can change everything," he said. "We already happen to have two of the greatest shooters of all time. Look at the games. We've only been losing by six or eight points. But add those two guys, and we're already pretty good." While the Rockets were adding players over the break, the Warriors were subtracting. Jeremy Pargo and Zach Norvell Jr., signed to 10-day contracts earlier this month, were not retained.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 21, 2020SAN FRANCISCO Russell Westbrook vowed to better control his emotions down the stretch of the regular season. They sometimes get the better of him and he realizes he's under the watchful eye of referees because of his reputation, but he won't ever back down.James Harden had 29 points and 10 assists, Westbrook added 21 points and 10 assists before being ejected, and the Houston Rockets beat the cold-shooting Golden State Warriors 135-105 on Thursday night in the teams' first game back from the All-Star break.Things got testy with 6:04 to play when Westbrook tussled with several Warriors, including bumping Damion Lee but ''it wasn't on purpose.'' After a replay review, Westbrook received his second technical of the night and was ejected.''I'm always the one that gets painted to be a bad guy in the whole situation,'' Westbrook said, hinting he might review his technicals to see whether he has a case to get one rescinded.''... I'm in a position of like, `Oh well, Russ is being Russ,' which nobody knows what that means. But I've got to do a better job of holding myself accountable to a very, very high standard. I will make sure I leave no room for error to allow somebody and people to paint me out to be a guy that I'm not. I think it's unfair that after all that I'm the only one that gets a tech or kicked out. That's not fair''P. J. Tucker scored 15 points. He made all five of his 3-pointers as the Rockets knocked down 25 total - a franchise record allowed by the Warriors. Houston set an NBA record with 27 3s in a win against the Suns last April.Robert Covington added 20 points as the Rockets ran away with this one early after losing 116-104 at Chase Center on Christmas Day.Andrew Wiggins scored 22 points in the Warriors' fifth straight loss and also their fifth consecutive at home. Draymond Green dished out seven assists after getting nine in each of his previous two games.''He's one of those guys people have said he's overrated now for a couple years,'' coach Steve Kerr said of Wiggins. ''He's become underrated.'' The Rockets, missing guard Eric Gordon for a third straight game with a bruised left leg, raced to a 16-4 lead.Westbrook was hit with a technical foul at the 7:38 mark of the first quarter, when the Rockets made 8 of 12 3-pointers to take control. Harden shot just 6 for 16 from the field - 3 of 12 on 3s - but made 14 of 15 free throws.Golden State started 5 of 16 and missed its initial 11 3-point attempts. When Jordan Poole finally connected from deep with 4:52 left in first half, Houston already had 13 3s.THOMPSON UPDATEKlay Thompson will not play the rest of the regular season as has been the plan all along, though the Warriors said it definitively before the game.Thompson tore the ACL in his left knee last June 13 during the deciding Game 6 of the NBA Finals against Toronto and had surgery July 2. He was re-evaluated over the All-Star break and the team said Stephen Curry's Splash Brother is expected to be ready to go for training camp in late September.''It's been a very frustrating year for Klay but I think he's almost out of the woods,'' Kerr said. ''He's a couple months away from this season ending and him moving toward a summer of preparing for the next season with his teammates, so I think that's a much better place for him to be emotionally.'' An update on Curry's recovery and progress from a broken left hand is planned for Feb. 28 and he expects to be back on the court in March.TIP-INSRockets: Coach Mike D'Antoni hopes Gordon could be back as soon as Saturday at Utah. ... Houston has won the last two season series against Golden State after losing three straight. ... The Rockets have won seven of the last 10 in the series after losing 11 of 12 from February 2014 to March 2017. ... The Rockets also have won four of five on the road against the Warriors after dropping five of the previous six. ... Houston is 10-10 on the road vs. the Western Conference.Warriors: Wiggins notched his fourth straight season reaching 100 3s. He has scored in double figures for a career-high 65 straight games, all 46 this year and four with the Warriors since joining Golden State in a trade from Minnesota. ... The Warriors were looking to sign Dragan Bender to a 10-day contract, with Kerr noting, ''It's trending that way.'' ... Rookie Poole scored in double figures for a career-best fifth straight game. ... The Warriors stuck with their same starting lineup coming out of the break. Kerr has used 27 different starting rotations already, tied for the most in his six seasons with the 27 he used in 2017-18. ... Golden State plays at Houston in the teams' final meeting April 2.SMALL BALL A NECESSITYD'Antoni chuckled as he explained Houston's small-ball approach when asked about how he used to decide when to go big or small.''I don't have to worry about that now,'' D'Antoni said. ''I couldn't make that decision so I decided to just give me no choice. You're assuming we have a strategy, we're going to play small. We don't need to go big. Our team is better this way and if we're going to dive in we might as well go all the way in.'' UP NEXTRockets: Visit the Jazz on Saturday having won the last two in Utah and four of five on the road in the series.Warriors: Host the Pelicans on Sunday to continue a four-game homestand.---More NBA: https://apnews.com/NBA and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 19, 2020Positioning in the top-heavy Big Ten Conference is at stake Thursday when No. 20 Iowa welcomes No. 25 Ohio State to Iowa City.Thursday's matchup is the only regular-season meeting between the Hawkeyes (18-8, 9-6 Big Ten) and Buckeyes (17-8, 7-7), and it could be an especially important one for conference tournament seeding. The top four teams in next month's Big Ten tournament receive an automatic bye to the quarterfinals, avoiding the extra game that comes with finishing fifth through 10th -- or two extra games, finishing No. 11 or worse.Heading into Wednesday night's action, Iowa was in a five-team tie for third-place. Ohio State was tied for eighth, but a win would pull it even with the Hawkeyes in the loss column."Winning is hard, especially in the Big Ten this year," forward Kyle Young said in the press conference following Ohio State's 68-52 win over Purdue on Saturday. The Buckeyes have experienced just how difficult it is to win in the Big Ten, which could have as many as 11 NCAA Tournament teams. Ohio State, which was ranked No. 2 nationally early in the season, opened conference competition 2-6.Ohio State has since won five of six games, including its past two. The recent surge elevated the Buckeyes back into the Top 25 and into the hunt for one of the coveted Big Ten tournament byes."This stretch has been great," Ohio State coach Chris Holtmann said following the Purdue win, before noting Ohio State's challenges in some road games. "But I didn't feel like ... we brought enough effort in (the 70-57 loss at Wisconsin on Feb. 9)." The Buckeyes are 3-5 in true road games, contrasted with Iowa's 12-1 mark at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The home-court advantage, as well as the play of national player of the year contender Luka Garza, present two of the stiffest challenges for Ohio State on Thursday.Garza is averaging 23.7 points per game, fourth-most in the nation, and 9.7 rebounds per game. He can score both inside, shooting 59.8 percent from inside the 3-point arc, and from long range with 38.8 percent accuracy (33 of 85) behind the arc. With Garza as the engine, and the consistent deep shooting of CJ Fredrick at 46.7 percent from 3-point range, Iowa boasts the country's sixth-most efficient offense per KenPom.com.Ohio State has college basketball's No. 14-ranked defense in adjusted efficiency, and is fourth-best at defending inside the 3-point line. Opponents shoot just 41.5 percent on 2-point field-goal attempts.Kaleb Wesson, one of the Big Ten's premier interior defenders and rebounders, counters the All-American candidate Garza. Wesson averages 14.1 points and 9.4 rebounds. For Iowa, Thursday's contest marks its first at home since Feb. 8. The Hawkeyes went 1-1 in back-to-back road games at Indiana and Minnesota. The 58-55 win over the Golden Gophers on Sunday continued a trend in which the Hawkeyes have not won or lost consecutive games since a five-game winning streak ended on Jan. 30."You cannot go on the road, get down eight with five minutes to go and panic, or it's going to go from eight to 13," Iowa coach Fran McCaffrey said in his press conference following the Minnesota win. "It went the other way and things changed, momentum shifts and we were a confident group." --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 20, 2020PHILADELPHIA Monty Scott scored 25 points and Nate Pierre-Louis added 23 points, both of which were career-highs, to help Temple to a 93-89 double-overtime win over UConn on Thursday night.Quinton Rose added 15 points and Alani Moore II scored 14 for the Owls (14-12, 6-7 American Athletic Conference).Christian Vital tallied 21 points and Isaiah Whaley had 18 points and 14 rebounds for the Huskies (14-12, 5-8). UConn was playing its first game without freshman big man Akok Akok, who tore his left Achilles’ early in Sunday’s 64-61 home victory over Memphis. The Owls, coming off Sunday’s 76-56 home defeat to Philadelphia Big 5 rival Villanova, went ahead for good in the second overtime on Pierre-Louis’ two free throws that made it 85-84. Temple’s lead was three, 89-86, after J. P. Moorman II’s layup with 57.6 left. After Alterique Gilbert missed a 3-pointer on UConn’s ensuing possession, Moore made a pair of free throws to put the Owls in front 91-86.UConn went up 80-77 on Jalen Gaffney’s two free throws with 28.9 seconds left in the first OT, but Scott tied it with a 3 from the top of the key seven seconds later. Vital’s jumper from the left elbow just before the buzzer rimmed out.Rose made it 65-57 with his first field goal with 3:40 left in regulation. Temple’s leading scorer had missed his first 10 tries from the field. UConn scored seven of the next nine points, capped by Vital’s follow basket with 1:33 to play, to pull within 67-63. Pierre-Louis then missed a 3-point try, but Moore dived on the floor for an offensive rebound.Scott then missed the front end of a one-and-one with 48.2 seconds left, and Whaley scored on UConn’s ensuing possession. After Moore’s two free throws put Temple ahead 69-66 with 34.1 to play, Brendan Adams made the second of two free throws.Rose then missed both free throws with 17.1 seconds left and, after a Huskies timeout, Whaley tied it at 69-all with a floater in the lane.Scott’s runner at the regulation buzzer from just inside the 3-point line hit the back iron.BIG PICTUREUConn: A perennial national powerhouse that won four national titles between 1999-2014 (1999, 2004, 2011 and 2014), the Huskies haven’t made the NCAA tournament since 2016. UConn will depart the American Athletic Conference after this season following seven seasons in the upstart league to rejoin the Big East. The Huskies’ only path to the NCAA tournament is to win the AAC conference tournament, something they’ve done just once –- in 2016.Temple: Like UConn, Temple’s only path to the NCAA tournament is by winning the AAC conference title. Not only have the Owls never won the league tournament, but they’ve never advanced to the conference title game. The Owls made six straight NCAA tournaments from 2008-13 under Fran Dunphy, but they have advanced to just two of the last six seasons.UP NEXTUConn: Hosts South Florida on Sunday.Temple: Plays at ECU on Sunday.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 19, 2020No. 24 Arizona is a half-game out of the Pac-12 lead as it enters what some might see as a revenge homestand. The Wildcats (18-7, 8-4) were swept on the road last month at the Oregon schools; now they host the pair in Tucson this week, starting with Oregon State (15-10, 5-8) on Thursday night. The Beavers blitzed Arizona late in the first meeting, turning a five-point lead at the midway point of the second half into an 82-65 victory in Corvallis. Arizona coach Sean Miller is focusing on improvement as a better motivation than payback."Somebody told me a long time ago that revenge kills you," Miller said. "You start thinking in those terms, it's not healthy in any way, shape or form. For us, especially as the calendar turns to late February, we just want to play well." Arizona did play well last week, sweeping Cal and Stanford on the road, although it didn't shoot well. Better 3-point shooting could be the boost the Wildcats need in the final six regular-season games to get a league title. They have shot 24 of 100 from beyond the arc in the past five games.Miller credited improving defense for last week's road sweep."We outrebounded Stanford. We took care of the ball, especially at Cal. And we were able to leave with two good road wins," he said. "This week, my hope is we can be a more efficient, better shooting team against both Oregon State and Oregon." Much of that attention in that area will be on Wildcats point guard Nico Mannion, who leads the nation's freshman in assists (5.3 per game) but is 15 of 57 from the field, including 4 from 23 from behind the arc, in the past five games."It's just a matter of time before Nico breaks through," Miller said. "He can't let what has happened over the last game or the last shot affect the shot he's taking, or the next game or the next week." The Beavers have four Quad 1 victories -- one more than Arizona -- winning at Colorado and Stanford, and beating Arizona and Oregon at home. They have one of the best stat-stuffers in the nation in Tres Tinkle (18.3 points, 7.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, 2.0 steals) and another all-conference candidate in Ethan Thompson (15.1 points, 4.2 assists).Tinkle set a school record in Saturday night's 69-47 home loss to Colorado by reaching double-digit points in his 90th consecutive game.Tinkle and Thompson didn't get enough help against the Buffaloes as the rest of the team combined for just 20 points."Didn't see it coming," coach Wayne Tinkle said. "For whatever reason, we didn't scrap like we have been scrapping, didn't put up the fight we thought we would. ... We have to admit it. It was a woodshed job. We just didn't have enough people trying to respond and battle back."All we need to do now is get ourselves better the next couple days, prepare for our next opponent, and make sure we're that much more ready to go after it." Tinkle and Thompson combined for 38 points in the first meeting against Arizona, when the Beavers got needed contributions from others, including three teammates who were in double figures. Oregon State made 27 of 50 shots in that game, often succeeding on drives to the basket.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 21, 2020TUCSON, Ariz. Arizona rolled past an undisciplined Oregon State squad 89-63 on Thursday night.Josh Green scored 18 points and Nico Mannion scored 12 of his 16 in the second half for the 24th-ranked Wildcats (19-7, 9-4 Pac-12), Max Hazzard scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half and Zeke Nnaji added 13 points and seven rebounds for Arizona. The Wildcats made 10 more free throws than the Beavers (15-11, 5-9), with help from three technical fouls against Oregon State.“They shot 15 free throws and we shot 28," Arizona coach Sean Miller said. “It was about our aggressiveness.”Oregon State also committed 21 turnovers to lose for the third time in five games. The Beavers lost leading scorer Tres Tinkle to his second technical foul for a high elbow with 13:17 remaining and Arizona up 52-40. Oregon State coach Wayne Tinkle, Tres' father, was assessed a technical moments later.Wayne Tinkle didn't expect his son to lose his composure.“That was uncharacteristic,” Wayne Tinkle said. “But I tell you what, he's been ridden like American Pharaoh all of the stinkin' league (season). And he's got to be better. He's got to play through that, but I've told people that if the way the game is being called isn't changed, then something silly is going to happen. It's very unfortunate. He's not that kind of player. He's got to keep his head about him." After the technicals, the Wildcats took control with a 12-3 run to cruise to victory. The Wildcats won for the sixth time in seven games and are tied for second place in the conference.Arizona avenged an 82-65 loss at Oregon State earlier in the season.“It wasn't something we talked about, but I think as a group, we kind of had that in mind," Mannion said. “We owed them one.”Jarod Lucas scored 18 points and Kylor Kelley added 14 points and eight rebounds for Oregon State. Tinkle entered the night averaging 18.3 points per contest, but he was held to 10.The Beavers turned the ball over four times in the first four minutes. A steal and dunk from Green gave the Wildcats a 10-2 lead at the 16:01 mark.“My main goal coming into the game was just try my hardest on defense, bring energy to the team and do all the dirty work and energize,” said Green, who had four steals.Oregon State went almost five minutes between baskets early in the game, but trimmed an 11-point deficit to 19-15 on a layup by Ethan Thompson with 9:33 to go.Christian Koloko’s dunk out of a timeout gave Arizona a 35-22 lead, the Wildcats’ largest lead of the first half. Green scored 13 points before the break to give Arizona a 40-30 lead. Nnaji’s two free throws with 15:34 left gave Arizona a 47-34 lead early in the second half, and the Wildcats maintained control from there.BIG PICTUREOregon State: Plenty of observers felt the Beavers had the experience and talent to be an NCAA tournament team this season, but they will have to go on an epic run in February and March to get in. The opportunity is there for a strong regular season finish, with games at No. 14 Oregon, whom the Beavers beat once this season, and at home against struggling Stanford and California, before the Pac-12 Tournament.Arizona: The Wildcats are right in the thick of the regular season title race, with a home game against Oregon - which fell at Arizona State Thursday - and home games against Washington State and Washington to end the regular season.HIGHLIGHT REELMiller singled out freshman center Koloko for his play - five points and three blocked shots in 10 minutes. Soon after Tres Tinkle was ejected, Koloko swatted away a shot from Thompson, which led to Hazzard's driving layup at other end for 56-40 lead.UP NEXTOregon State: Heads north to face Arizona State Saturday night in Tempe, Ariz. The Beavers lost at home to the Sun Devils 82-76 on January 9.Arizona: The Wildcats get a chance to atone for a 74-73 overtime loss at Oregon last month when they face the Ducks at home Saturday night.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25

GAME RECAP
Feb 20, 2020LINCOLN, Neb. As far as Tom Izzo is concerned, a 21-point win over lowly Nebraska doesn't mean everything's OK now for Michigan State. The Spartans, who have been struggling for almost a month, had a good shooting night, dominated the boards and got big contributions from reserves Gabe Brown and Kyle Ahrens in the 86-65 win Thursday. But a season-high 22 turnovers and the inability to put away the Cornhuskers until well after halftime overshadowed the positives in Izzo's mind.''I can't be very excited about us even thought it looks like we shot well,'' Izzo said. ''What we did isn't going to get us where we need to get.'' Brown had career highs with 17 points and five 3-pointers, and Ahrens had a season-high 14 points in 22 minutes, his most action in the seven games he's been back from an Achilles' and ankle injury. The Spartans were 13 of 27 on 3s and shot 52 percent for the game.Cassius Winston led the Spartans (18-9, 10-6 Big Ten) with 23 points, but Izzo was troubled by Winston and Rocket Watts combining for nine turnovers.''We tried to get ball inside, they did a great job of doubling, and we did a poor job of passing,'' Izzo said. ''I was so disappointed in the turnovers. Everybody charts those differently. They had 16 points off turnovers. What did they score, 65? I thought it was 60 points off turnovers. That's what it felt like where I was.'' The Spartans finally busted open the game with a 22-8 run in the middle of the second half. Nebraska (7-19, 2-13) dropped its 11th straight game, the most consecutive losses in the same season in program history.Xavier Tillman, playing three days after his wife gave birth to the couple's second child, had 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Spartans.Dachon Burke led the Huskers with 21 points, and Haanif Cheatham added 14.Just when it looked like the Spartans might begin pulling away early in the second half, Nebraska converted three straight turnovers into two fast-break baskets and a free throw to pull within 48-46.Then the Spartans used an 11-1 spurt to take their first double-digit lead, and they went on to win easily.''It's kind of hard to find motivation, but we just keep trying,'' Nebraska's Yvan Ouedraogo said.BIG PICTUREMichigan State: The Spartans have been out of the Top 25 for two weeks and came to Lincoln off losses in four of their previous five games, including a gut-punch defeat at home to Maryland on Saturday. They aren't all the way out of the Big Ten race, but now is the time for them to get some wins to enhance their seeding for the Big Ten and NCAA tournaments. Each of their final four regular-season opponents is ranked this week.Nebraska: The Huskers, who haven't won since Jan. 7, once again hung with their opponent for a half before wearing down over the final 20 minutes. It's not a question of effort. It's a matter of the Huskers being undermanned and undersized.JACK HOIBERG STARTSIzzo gave Jack Hoiberg his first start, a nod to the walk-on guard playing in Lincoln, with his dad, Fred, on the opposite bench coaching the Huskers. Jack took Watts' spot in the lineup and played the first two minutes. He returned with 2:59 left in the game and finished with four points, two assists and one rebound in five minutes.Izzo said he decided on the bus ride to the arena that he would start Jack ''because it's the right thing to do.'' ''This kid has given me three years. I'm big into memory-making moments. If we would have lost, it still would have been the right thing to do.'' Fred Hoiberg said he appreciated Izzo's gesture. Jack had his mom, two brothers, grandparents, aunts and uncles in his cheering section. ''Just a real special moment for all of us,'' coach Hoiberg said.Jack, a stalwart on the Spartans' scout team who typically plays only in blowouts, said it was a strange feeling being on the court in Lincoln.''I would look down at their bench and think this is my first time ever not rooting for my dad's teams, which is different,'' Jack said. ''It was fun. I'm sure it wasn't as fun for him. It was a cool experience.'' UP NEXTMichigan State hosts Iowa on Tuesday in the only regular-season meeting of the teams.Nebraska visits Illinois on Monday, the only regular-season game between the teams.---More college basketball: http://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and http://www.twitter.com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 19, 2020For the first time in nearly 10 years, the BYU Cougars are ranked in the Top 25.In his first year, head coach Mark Pope has guided the Cougars to a 21-7 record, and on Monday his squad was rewarded with a No. 23 ranking. The last time BYU was ranked was at the end of the 2010-2011 season, when the Cougars finished at No. 10.The Cougars (10-3 West Coast Conference) have won six straight and look to win their seventh straight game when Santa Clara visits Provo on Thursday night. The Broncos (18-9, 5-7) have lost three straight and are 3-5 on the road this season. BYU sports a 12-1 record at the Marriott Center.Fans around the country might not be familiar with BYU forward Yoeli Childs, but he's no secret to teams in the WCC.Childs averages 20.7 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. He makes 59.4 percent of his field-goal attempts. When the Cougars need a basket, Childs usually comes through in the clutch.Against San Diego on Saturday, Childs rescued the Cougars with an alley-oop dunk with 11 seconds left that gave BYU a 72-71 win over the Toreros."I'm just so proud of our guys. These guys deserve it. Just because you deserve something doesn't mean you're going to get it," Childs told the Deseret News. "That was a battle. San Diego came out swinging, and they played a great game. But I'm just proud of our guys and it feels great." BYU is making a habit of winning in the final seconds. The Cougars now have won three games this season on game-winning shots with 12 seconds or less left to play."I was super nervous about [the San Diego game]," Pope said. "With Dalt [Nixon] being out -- it's the first time we played a game without him -- and just where we are in the season right now. ... I'm just proud of my guys for gutting it out." Nixon was hurt in the win against LMU, and the Cougars will be without his 7.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game for a few weeks at least. The Broncos are coming off a six-point loss to Loyola Marymount. In a game that saw 15 lead changes, it was the Broncos who couldn't close out LMU in the final 10 minutes.Josip Vrankic led the Broncos with 17 points. Jaden Bediako had 11 rebounds."We have a balanced team, a team that does a great job sharing the basketball, moving the basketball," coach Herb Sendek recently said. "Our guys continue to play unselfish. Different guys have stepped up. But the key is guys are really playing together." The Broncos will need to get back to that style of basketball against a superior BYU team if they have a chance for an upset. BYU averages 80 points per game and 17.7 assists per game.BYU ranks No. 1 in the country in 3-point field-goal percentage at 42.6 percent, having made 304 of 714 attempts. The Cougars' 3-point acumen was on display in a win last week against LMU, when they set a school record by making 18 3-pointers.The Broncos average 76.1 points per game and make 36 percent of their 3-point attempts.Trey Wertz and Vrankic are Santa Clara's leading scorers at 11.9 points per game. Four others average between 10.9 and 8.2 points per game.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 21, 2020PROVO, Utah It turns out blistering 3-point shooting is not the only tool in BYU's arsenal. When the shots did not fall from the perimeter on Thursday night, the No. 23 Cougars settled into attacking the basket and it helped them eventually pull away from Santa Clara for an 85-75 victory.T. J Haws scored 28 points and had nine assists while keying that attack on the rim. The senior point guard scored or assisted on 17 of BYU's final 19 points. His efforts helped the Cougars break a 66-66 tie with 5:37 remaining.BYU made a season-low three 3-pointers on just 13 attempts.''Santa Clara made an all-out commitment to not double in the post and not give up threes,'' BYU coach Mark Pope said. ''Your poison there is T. J. Haws downhill. I don't know if anybody wants to see T. J. Haws downhill. He's just too good. He's unbelievable. He's really special.'' With Haws leading the charge, BYU took command behind a 15-3 run that gave the Cougars an 81-69 lead going into the final minute. BYU made four straight baskets, culminating in a 3-pointer from Yoeli Childs at the top of the key, to punctuate the game-clinching spurt.Haws ended up being the spark that lit the fire that burned Santa Clara's upset hopes. He scored a pair of baskets and made four free throws during the game-clinching run, while assisting on three other baskets.''We're a great 3-point shooting team and a lot of guys can go off any night,'' Haws said. ''But I think it shows a lot of who we are. If the three is not falling, we can win in other ways. This team, we fight to the end and we just find ways to win.'' Childs scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Jake Toolson added 20 points and 10 boards for BYU (22-7, 11-3 West Coast Conference). The Cougars won their seventh straight.Josip Vrankic scored 28 points and collected 11 rebounds to lead the Broncos (18-10, 5-8). Tahij Eaddy added 11 points, all in the second half.BYU finished with a 41-32 advantage on rebounds.''I don't think that this crew has it in our DNA to be a dominant rebounding team,'' Pope said. ''But we have to be able to compete and the guys did a nice job on the glass.'' Santa Clara opened the second half on a 10-2 run and made it a one-possession game when Trey Wertz and Keshawn Justice sank back-to-back 3-pointers to cut BYU's lead to 42-40.The Broncos took only their second lead of the game at 49-47 when Eaddy made a 3-pointer for his first basket. Santa Clara went 4-of-4 from long-distance through the first seven minutes of the second half after making only one 3-pointer before halftime.''I thought, for the most part, we played the right way throughout the game,'' Santa Clara coach Herb Sendek said. ''Early on, the ball wasn't going down for us. As we got more comfortable, we made more shots.'' The Broncos missed 12 of their first 15 shots from the field. It opened the door for BYU to surge ahead once the Cougars worked out of their own slow start. BYU scored on five straight possessions to carve out a 17-6 lead midway through the first half. Childs punctuated a 9-0 run with back-to-back layups. The Broncos scored their first 10 baskets in the paint before Jalen Williams broke the ice from the perimeter to cut BYU's lead to 34-26. Santa Clara could not get the deficit under double digits again before halftime. Haws hit four free throws -- interrupted only by a layup from Childs -- to push the Cougars' lead to 40-28.FREE THROW KINGHaws went 12-of-12 from the free throw line. He's made 28 straight free throws going back to BYU's 107-80 victory over Pepperdine on January 31. The senior made one fewer free throw than Santa Clara did as a team.He was converting 73.5 percent from the line for the season coming into the game and has seen major improvement on his free throws since the Cougars began WCC play.''I'm shooting extra ones after practice,'' Haws said. ''I think my confidence has gone up a little bit. Sometimes, you need to get into a rhythm at the free throw line.'' JERSEY SWITCHZac Seljaas had to change jerseys after ripping the chest on his jersey late in the first half. Seljaas subbed out with 5:38 left in the half and changed from No. 2 to No. 20 for the remainder of the game.THE BIG PICTURESanta Clara: The Broncos hung tough by getting to the basket after an early shooting drought. That opened things up on the perimeter, which allowed Santa Clara to stay in the game until the final minutes.BYU: A rare off-night from the perimeter put the Cougars into a dogfight for the better part of the second half. BYU dodged an upset loss by making stops at critical junctures down the stretch.POLL IMPLICATIONSBYU didn't hurt its spot in the Top 25 and can help it significantly if it can score an upset victory over No. 2 Gonzaga on Saturday.UP NEXTSanta Clara visits Pacific on Saturday.BYU hosts No. 2 Gonzaga on Saturday.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25-30-

The Sun Devils' only loss in this hot stretch came when Washington State's CJ Elleby made a step-back 3-pointer with four seconds remaining in a 67-65 road loss Jan. 29.The Ducks (20-6, 9-4) have won six of eight after a weekend home sweep of then-No. 16 Colorado and Utah. After a stop at No. 24 Arizona on Saturday, the Ducks will play their final three games at home, where they are 14-0."We're going to have to play our best down the stretch, and you're going to have to win on the road if you're going to win it," said Oregon coach Dana Altman, who passed John Wooden with his 665th career victory in the Utah game."It'll be an interesting last three weeks. We have a big road week. So we'll have to play really well." Colorado (20-6, 9-4) and Arizona (18-7, 8-4) also are tied for the Pac-12 lead in the loss column, and USC (19-7, 8-5) and UCLA (15-11, 8-5) are stalking. The Arizona and Southern California schools play in Los Angeles next week.Arizona State's resurgence came a couple of weeks after a 75-47 loss to Arizona in Tucson in the Pac-12 opener Jan. 4.The Sun Devils beat Utah 83-64 on Jan. 18 and then won the Arizona rematch 66-65 on Jan. 25, when Alonzo Verge Jr.'s driving layup with 10.9 seconds left capped a comeback from a 22-point first-half deficit. They beat USC 66-64 on Feb. 8 despite going more than 11 minutes without a field goal, missing 15 straight until Remy Martin's 15-footer broke a tie with 16.2 seconds left."We are not satisfied," said Verge, who has embraced his reserve role and is averaging 16.8 points off the bench in the past eight games."This is something we knew we were capable of doing, and something we are going to continue doing. We are going to keep working and pushing each other, and that's where it starts." The game features two of the top candidates for Pac-12 Player of the Year: Oregon senior guard Payton Pritchard and Martin, who are 1-2 in the league in scoring. Martin is averaging 19.56 points per game. Pritchard is at 19.50 while playing one more game. Each will enter as a reigning national player of the week. Martin was named Oscar Robertson national player of the week as chosen by the U. S. Basketball Writers Association after scoring 66 points on 67 percent shooting in the Sun Devils' road sweep of the Bay Area schools.Pritchard was recognized by the Naismith Trophy committee after scoring 40 points in victories over Colorado and Utah. He had his fourth career double-double with 15 points and a career-high 11 rebounds in the 68-60 victory over Colorado. Pritchard is the only player from a Power 6 conference averaging at least 19 points, four rebounds and five assists.Martin and Pritchard scored 29 points apiece in the Ducks' 78-69 victory in the first meeting this season Jan. 11.--Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 19, 2020Colorado is one of six teams separated by one game in the Pac-12 race.By coach Tad Boyle's count, that means the No. 18 Buffaloes need to win all five of their remaining regular-season games."They're must wins," Boyle told reporters. "If we want to compete for a league championship, they're absolute must wins." Colorado looks to begin that task when it faces Southern California on Thursday in Boulder, Colo. The Buffaloes (20-6, 9-4) are tied with No. 14 Oregon atop the Pac-12 standings with no breathing room to be found.No. 24 Arizona and Arizona State are both a half-game behind while the Trojans (19-7, 8-5) and UCLA stand one game out.Colorado routed USC 78-57 on Feb. 1 in Los Angeles, or the roles would be reversed entering the rematch. Then again, the Buffaloes could have been alone in first place, but they dropped a 68-60 decision at Oregon last Thursday night. So no matter how it is viewed, there is plenty at stake."We have got smart guys, we have veteran guys," Boyle said. "They know what's on the line. They know what position we put ourselves in. They get it. You don't harp on it. You just say, 'Hey guys, let's have no regrets.' That's the biggest thing you want." The Trojans are also in must-win mode, and their situation is complicated by a concussion suffered by star freshman big man Onyeka Okongwu.Okongwu has missed the past two games, and his status is unclear for Thursday's game. He leads USC in scoring (16.4), rebounding (8.9) and blocked shots (3.0).Freshman forward Isaiah Mobley has stepped up by averaging 9.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in the two contests. The Trojans won both games following a three-game slide, and Mobley sees more victories piling up down the stretch."Now we can get our minds ready for this road trip," Mobley said of an excursion that includes Sunday's game at Utah. "Obviously we want to win the Pac-12 and go to the (NCAA) Tournament. We have the talent and experience to do that and make a run." Senior guard Daniel Utomi stood out in last Saturday's 70-51 home win over Washington State by establishing season bests of 23 points and five 3-pointers.Utomi has scored at least 15 points in three of the past four games and is averaging 16.8 during the stretch. The transfer from Akron had averaged 3.7 points in the previous three contests.Senior guard Jonah Mathews (12.8 average) had just seven points against the Cougars after averaging 19 over the previous two games. Mathews has 236 career 3-pointers, third in school history behind Bennie Boatwright (243 from 2015-19) and leader Elijah Stewart (245 from 2014-18).Reserve freshman guard Kyle Sturdivant (bereavement) is expected to miss his third straight game. The Trojans had trouble defending Colorado junior forward Tyler Bey in the first meeting. Bey had 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting and also recorded seven rebounds, two blocked shots and two steals.Bey has 10 double-doubles this season, including in three of the past four games. He had 21 points and 15 rebounds in last Saturday's 69-47 road win over Oregon State to raise his scoring average to 13.5. Bey leads the Buffaloes in rebounding (9.3), steals (39) and blocks (32).Junior guard McKinley Wright IV recorded 13 points, 10 rebounds and six assists without a turnover against Oregon State for his fifth double-double of the season. Wright boasts team-best averages of 13.6 points and 5.2 assists.Bey and Wright have led the way as Boyle recorded 20 wins for the seventh time in his 10-season tenure. The Trojans are one victory away from reaching 20 for the fourth time in coach Andy Enfield's seven seasons. But that isn't the accomplishment he is worried about."We're a game out of first," Enfield told reporters. "We know how tough it is to go to the mountain schools. It's the toughest road trip in the Pac-12." --Field Level Media
