GAME RECAP
Aug 16, 2019CHARLOTTE, N. C. Josh Allen completed 9 of 11 passes for 102 yards and led two scoring drives, Kevin Johnson returned an interception 71 yards for a touchdown and the Buffalo Bills defeated the Carolina Panthers 27-14 on Friday night. Allen, who was 5-6 as a rookie starter last season, led a 13-play, 63-yard drive that culminated in a field goal, and a touchdown drive capped by a 1-yard run by LeSean McCoy to put Buffalo (2-0) up 10-0 early before exiting the game. Five of Allen's completions went to Cole Beasley for 54 yards. Matt Barkley also looked solid, completing 8 of 10 passes for 110 yards, including a 9-yard TD pass to Duke Williams. The Panthers (1-1) struggled mightily on offense without Cam Newton, who didn't play for the second straight week. Buffalo's defense held Carolina to 132 yards in the first half after spending two days facing the Panthers in joint practices earlier this week. The Panthers didn't help themselves with five holding penalties before halftime. Panthers coach Ron Rivera said Wednesday all of his regular starters would play, but reversed course and rested several of his star players, including running back Christian McCaffrey, tight end Greg Olsen, and linebackers Luke Kuechly and Shaq Thompson. PANTHERS QBS STRUGGLEKyle Allen got the start for the Panthers for the second straight game and was ineffective, completing 4 of 11 passes for 32 yards while playing into the second quarter. Rookie Will Grier, the team's third-round draft pick, had a rough start, throwing his second pass into double coverage near the sideline, resulting in a pick-6 for Johnson, who made it 17-0 with 7:20 left in the second quarter. UP NEXTBills: visit the Detroit Lions next Friday night. Panthers: visit the New England Patriots on Thursday night in what could be Newton's first action of the preseason. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME RECAP
Aug 17, 2019EAST RUTHERFORD, N. J. Eli Manning pulled out a page from the Daniel Jones' playbook. He was perfect in a game in which the heir apparent faced adversity for the first time. The 38-year-old, two-time Super Bowl MVP threw a touchdown pass in a flawless series and the New York Giants had their way with the Chicago Bears' backups in a 32-13 preseason victory on Friday night. Jones also threw a touchdown pass, but the sixth pick overall in the draft finally looked like a rookie, losing two fumbles. Manning's performance came days after co-owner John Mara said a perfect season would be Jones not taking a snap, which would mean Manning and the Giants were doing well. ''John owns the team,'' coach Pat Shurmur. ''We are on the same page. Well you heard it from the owner and I think I have been saying that all along. '' Free agent rookie Jon Hilliman scored on a 10-yard run, Kyle Lauletta threw a 10-yard TD to Garrett Dickerson, Aldrick Rosas kicked a 47-yard field goal and New York (2-0) got a safety on a botched shotgun snap. Chicago coach Matt Nagy rested many key starters in falling to 0-2. Rookie Kerrith Whyte Jr. , who had a 103-yard kickoff return in the second quarter nullified by a late holding penalty, scored on a 1-yard run. Eddy Pineiro kicked field goals of 41 and 27 yards for the undermanned Bears. ''As a staff, we're trying to evaluate where our backups are,'' Nagy said. ''We had to make sure we handled things the right way. My biggest thing is to do what's best for the Chicago Bears. I feel good about our starters already. I'm not going to worry about that. This gives us a chance to check out our depth. '' Much like the preseason opener against the Jets, the focus for Giants fans was on Jones, the sixth pick overall in the draft and a young man many think will lead the team back to respectability. Jones looked good throwing the ball, hitting 11 of 14 for 161 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown to TJ Jones. The kid from Duke also showed some flaws, turning over the ball twice on fumbles. He failed to handle a snap at the Bears 19 and coughed up the ball when sacked by James Vaughters. ''That's the way the game goes sometimes,'' Daniel Jones said. ''You have to try to bounce back and try to score some points. '' Manning was very solid, leading the Giants on a 10-play, 79-yard drive that was capped with an 8-yard toss to Bennie Fowler III. He was 4 of 4 for 42 yards. ''Along the way he changed a route,'' Shurmur said. ''He really played quarterback well in that drive and got us in the end zone. That's what you evaluate quarterbacks on, getting the team in the end zone. '' Shurmur held out running back Saquon Barkley and tight end Evan Engram for the second straight week. Neither is hurt. FULLER OUTBears All-Pro cornerback Kyle Fuller did not make the trip. He had a fight in practice this week and was left home. ''We're going to handle that internally,'' Nagy said. ''I don't want to get into how we handled it or Kyle handled it. '' INJURY REPORTBears: OL Rashaad Coward left in the third quarter with an elbow injury. Giants: CB Antonio Hamilton left in the second quarter with a groin injury. NEXT UPBears: on the road again to face the Indianapolis Colts in their next-to-last preseason game on Aug. 24. Giants: at Cincinnati on Thursday night. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME RECAP
Aug 17, 2019TAMPA, Fla. Miami coach Brian Flores gave second-year quarterback Josh Rosen a shot against Tampa Bay's first defensive unit and liked what he saw. Rosen was a surprise starter and went 10 for 18 for 102 yards during the first half in the Dolphins' 16-14 loss to the Buccaneers on Friday night. ''I thought he played well, made some good decisions out there,'' Flores said. ''He was into the game. He was ready to go. I thought he did a good job in the huddle, getting the play calls in. I thought he played well from that standpoint. '' Rosen, battling with 15-year veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick for the Dolphins' starting job, helped Miami to a pair of field goals and a 6-3 halftime lead. He was sacked three times. ''I would like to not see him take as many sacks,'' Flores said. ''But I thought he threw the ball well, had some drops. That didn't help him. '' Fitzpatrick, who spent the previous two seasons with Tampa Bay, entered to start the second half and completed 3 of 9 passes for 20 yards before being replaced by Jake Rudock five minutes into the fourth quarter. Fitzpatrick is expected to start next week's game against Jacksonville. Tampa Bay rookie Matt Gay had two field goals, including a go-ahead 48-yarder with 6 seconds to play. Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston played one series for the second consecutive week, completing 2 of 4 passes for 24 yards. He is in the final year of his rookie contract at a salary of nearly $21 million. The Dolphins got within 13-12 on an 8-yard strike from Rudock to Patrick Laird with 34 seconds remaining in the fourth period. Rudock then put the Dolphins up 14-13 by hitting Trenton Irwin for the 2-point conversion. ''Most teams, when you give up that touchdown and 2-point conversion, you go in the tank,'' Bucs coach Bruce Arians said. ''Offensive guys had a plan, they were ready to go. They went and won the game. Winning is fun in this league. '' The Buccaneers had a no-pass-interference call overturned after a video review with 3:36 left in the fourth that led to a tiebreaking touchdown. After the penalty on Tyler Patmon for interfering Justin Watson put the ball on the Miami 4, Ryan Griffin connected with Tanner Hudson for a 13-6 lead on the next play. Arians opted to have his regulars play less than they might normally in a second preseason game because of the work done during joint practices with the Dolphins on Tuesday and Wednesday. Miami's Jason Sanders made second-period field goals from 45 and 49 yards, the final one coming with 1 second remaining. Gay kicked a 32-yard field goal in the second quarter. Cairo Santos tied it at 6 with a 23-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. GETTING THE ''W''Arians got his first win with the Buccaneers. He's back on the sideline after a year of retirement. FLAGFESTOne week after having 14 penalties for 112 yards at Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay had eight more for 81 yards Friday night. ''A continuation of the dumbest penalties by our second and third group,'' Arians said. ''They're lucky we don't cut tomorrow. '' The Dolphins lost 122 yards on 13 penalties. ROOKIE REPORTDolphins WR Preston Williams was targeted six times but made just one catch for 7 yards. The undrafted player had four receptions for 97 yards in last week's game against Pittsburgh. INJURIESDolphins: RB Kenyan Drake (right foot) didn't play. Buccaneers: LB Lavonte David (knee) remains out. NEXT UPDolphins: return home to play Jacksonville on Thursday night. Buccaneers: host Cleveland next Friday night. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/tag/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME PREVIEW
Ramirez, Indians look to pound Yankees againFLMAfter a sluggish start, the Cleveland Indians entered the summer with many wondering if the team -- and slugger Jose Ramirez in particular -- were in for a down year. But Ramirez and the Indians have been rolling since June 14. Never was that more evident than on Thursday, when Ramirez homered twice and tied a career high with six RBIs in a 19-5 laugher at Yankee Stadium. Now, the Indians hope to keep the good times rolling Friday night against the Yankees in the second game of a four-game series.Cleveland pounded out 24 hits, its most since April 18, 2009 at Yankee Stadium in a 22-4 win. The Indians also hit seven homers for the first time since April 30, 2013 at Philadelphia.Leading the charge was Ramirez, who is hitting .320 (47-for-147) since July 4. Ramirez hit a grand slam and a two-run homer Thursday and has 52 RBIs in his last 53 games since June 14."When he gets hot, he's something incredible to watch," Cleveland center fielder Greg Allen told reporters. On June 14, Ramirez was hitting .202 as the Indians were in the beginning stage of their 44-19 surge. His average was .218 by the All-Star break and is up to .248 entering Friday."When he gets on a tear, it's one of the crazier things in the entire league to watch," Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis said. The Yankees will attempt to rebound from one of their worst losses of the season. New York's 42nd loss on the year was only its third in the last 17 games.Aaron Judge was 0-for-5, and his 10-for-55 skid in the last 15 games has lowered his average to .257. Despite the slump, there are no plans to drop him from the second spot in the lineup."The game's hard, and over the course of the season, it gets the greatest of players, which certainly 'Judgie' is," Yankees manager Aaron Boone told the media. "So, I'm confident he'll grind his way through it, hopefully soon." Right-hander Masahiro Tanaka (8-6, 4.64 ERA), who has a 7.16 ERA in his last six outings, starts for New York and is coming one of his most dominant outings of the season. In Sunday's 1-0 win at Toronto, he allowed three hits in eight-plus innings while throwing 94 pitches -- two more than he did in 5 1/3 innings on Aug. 5 in Baltimore.Tanaka is 1-2 with a 4.25 ERA in five career starts against Cleveland.Fellow righty Aaron Civale (1-1, 1.00) will make his fourth career start for Cleveland.Civale last pitched Sunday in Minnesota when he allowed one run on four hits in six innings and took a no-decision. It was the third straight start he allowed one run or less and pitched at least six innings, making him and Cody Anderson (2015) the only Cleveland starters since 1908 to pitch at least six innings and allow one or fewer runs in each of their first three career starts.--Field Level Media

Gary Sanchez and Gleyber Torres each had an RBI single for the AL East leaders, who increased their cushion to 10 1/2 games over Tampa Bay. They won for the 15th time in 18 tries and bounced right back from a 19-5 defeat Thursday night in the opener of this four-game series.Jose Ramirez and Yasiel Puig homered for the Indians.Cleveland, neck-and-neck with Minnesota atop the AL Central and leading the wild-card standings, lost for only the fourth time in its last 19 road games. GAME PREVIEW
Phillies coming off big win, host Padres nextFLMThe Philadelphia Phillies will be looking for their fourth consecutive victory when they host the San Diego Padres on Friday. The Phillies swept the Chicago Cubs in dramatic fashion when Bryce Harper launched a walk-off grand slam into deep right field for a 7-5 win Thursday. They entered the ninth inning trailing 5-1.Before the three-game series against the Cubs, the Phillies fired hitting coach John Mallee and hired former World Series-winning manager Charlie Manuel to replace him."I'm excited about it," the 75-year-old Manuel told reporters. "I think it's a challenge, and I like that. I've never been scared of anything like that, especially when it comes to hitting. It's one of my favorite things to talk about. I'm looking forward to it." Harper has three home runs in his last two games and 25 this season. The Phillies will send right-hander Vince Velasquez (4-7, 4.30 ERA) to the mound to try to extend their winning streak.Velasquez is 2-4 with a 4.50 ERA in nine starts since returning from the bullpen back to the starting rotation. In Velasquez's last start on Saturday, he gave up three hits and three runs in five innings in a 3-1 loss at San Francisco. Two of the hits were home runs to Evan Longoria and Kevin Pillar."It was one of those days where you're kind of dealing with adversity and you're trying to find something that works," Velasquez told reporters. "You're going to have outings like this where things are not going to go your way. You're not going to feel great. You're not going to have a lot of life on your fastball. It's a matter of finding ways of getting outs." The Padres are expected to be without potential Rookie of the Year candidate shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. Tatis has been struggling with a sore back and is likely to land on the injured list.Tatis is hitting .317 with 22 home runs, 53 RBIs and 16 stolen bases."Sometimes with backs, you just don't know," Padres manager Andy Green told reporters. "You're always just crossing your fingers (and) hoping. He's obviously been a huge part of everything we've done this year." San Diego will send 23-year-old Chris Paddack to the mound for his 21st start of the season. Paddack is 7-5 with a 3.26 ERA.Last Saturday, Paddack tossed six innings and gave up five hits and three runs in an 8-5 win over the Colorado Rockies."I still felt like it wasn't my best," Paddack told reporters. "I'm never going to really settle for being all right when I know that I could've done a little better job of making some pitches." The Padres are 27-31 on the road and will be searching for their second straight win overall.Third baseman Manny Machado, who was coveted as a free agent by numerous teams including the Phillies, will enter this series with a .263 average, 26 home runs and 70 RBIs.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Harper homers in third straight game to lead Phillies to winPHILADELPHIA Just like their laid-back new hitting coach, Phillies batters suddenly are relaxed. But they are doing some serious damage.Bryce Harper homered for the third straight game, Roman Quinn and J. T. Realmuto also went deep and Philadelphia's resurgent offense remained red-hot in an 8-4 victory over the San Diego Padres on Friday night. The Phillies had 12 hits, and tied their season-high winning streak at four in a row while pulling even with the Chicago Cubs for the second NL wild-card spot.Since Charlie Manuel arrived as the team's hitting coach on Wednesday, the Phillies are batting .337 with 35 hits, eight doubles, seven homers and 25 RBIs.Manuel, the folksy former Phillies manager and hitting guru who led the club to its second World Series title in 2008, replaced fired John Mallee. Since then, the team's offense has taken off.''Charlie has done a great job of keeping in loose, a real calming presence,'' Philadelphia manager Gabe Kapler said.Manuel's addition seems to paying off huge for Harper, as the slugger is 6-for-12 with four homers and 10 RBIs in the last three contests.''From top to bottom, it's pretty special,'' Harper said of Philadelphia's offense.Phillies fans reveled in Harper's performance as much as the Padres' Manny Machado's.Philadelphia coveted both high-profile free agents over the offseason, ultimately signing Harper for 13 years and $330 million after Machado inked for 10 years and $300 million with San Diego.Machado went 1-for-4 with a strikeout while also making an error and got serenaded by Phillies fans with chants of ''We got Harper! We got Harper!''Josh Naylor had three hits for San Digeo, which has lost four of five. After the Padres pulled within 5-3 with three runs in the sixth, Harper put Philadelphia ahead by five with an opposite-field drive to left off Michel Baez in the bottom of the frame. It wasn't as majestic as his booming, walkoff grand slam in Thursday's 7-5 win over the Cubs, but it was plenty to clear the wall to give Harper 26 home runs and 90 RBIs.''Gotta have a shutdown in the bottom of the sixth and we didn't have that,'' Padres manager Andy Green said.Harper just missed another homer in the eighth when his line drive landed several feet to the right of the foul pole in right.Vince Velasquez (5-7) allowed three runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and two walks.Philadelphia jumped out to a 5-0 lead with five runs off Padres starter Chris Paddack (7-6).Quinn led off the third with a towering, 439-foot shot pulled to the second deck in right that made it 2-0. Two batters later, Realmuto followed by driving a 76-mph curveball over the wall in right-center.Realmuto doubled and had three hits, and is batting .526 with four doubles, three homers and eight RBIs in his last five games.''We're just having a ton of fun, obviously,'' Realmuto said. ''We have a ton of confidence.'' PADDACK STRUGGLESPaddack allowed five runs on nine hits in 4 2/3.The 23-year-old rookie right-hander has struggled in his last five starts, in dropping to 1-2 with a 6.12 ERA while giving up 28 hits and eight home runs in 25 innings over that stretch.TRAINER'S ROOMPadres: SS Fernando Tatis Jr. was placed on the 10-day injured list with a back injury that ''most likely'' will end his season, according to Green. A rookie-of-the-year candidate, Tatis batting .317 with 13 doubles, 22 homers and 53 RBIs in 84 games. Green said the injury was the result of ''common usage'' and that it would require rest to heal. . The Padres also placed 2B Ian Kinsler on the 10-day IL with a neck injury that also will end his season. Green said Kinsler has a herniated disc and was weighing whether to have surgery.Phillies: Quinn came up lame while trying to run out a grounder in the eighth, and Kapler said he was being evaluated after the game for right groin tightness. . 1B Rhys Hoskins was not in the starting lineup after being hit on the right hand in Thursday's win over the Cubs. X-rays were negative. Hoskins took pregame batting practice and entered as a defensive replacement at first base in the ninth inning.UP NEXTPadres RHP Dinelson Lamet (1-2, 3.86) opposes Philadelphia RHP Zach Eflin (7-11, 4.49) in the second game of the three-game set on Saturday night.

GAME PREVIEW
Slipping Cubs face floundering PiratesFLMGoing into their weekend series, the visiting Chicago Cubs remain in the thick of the race for the National League Central title, while the Pittsburgh Pirates are fighting just to stay relevant.Chicago has hit a bit of a slide, losing five of six games, including a three-game sweep by Philadelphia that culminated Thursday with a blown five-run lead and Bryce Harper's walk-off grand slam as the Phillies won 7-5.The Cubs are dealing with what manager Joe Maddon described as flu symptoms among "six or seven" players lately. That includes Thursday when shortstop Javy Baez was a late scratch because of illness.Cubs reliever Brandon Kintzler (right pectoral inflammation) is expected to be activated from the injured list in time for Friday's game against the Pirates.Pittsburgh, firmly in last in the NL Central, took a little pressure off by winning back-to-back games earlier this week at Anaheim, ending an eight-game losing streak. But the Pirates are 6-25 since the All-Star break. In addition, the Pirates are coming off the news that No. 1 starter Jameson Taillon will miss not only the rest of this season but also all of 2020 after it was determined he needed -- and had -- Tommy John surgery in addition to a less serious elbow procedure. So Pittsburgh is feeling like it has to be perfect just to get by."We, as a team, we can't make mistakes," said Chris Archer, the starter who took the loss Wednesday in a 7-4 defeat at Anaheim that closed out a Pirates' road trip. "We (starters) usually throw around 100 pitches, and one or two of those is the difference in the game. We can't make mistakes on the pitching end, the defensive end, or on offense, base-running. We can't make any mistakes at all." Taking two of three from the Angels was the Pirates' first series win since the All-Star break."It's a step in the right direction," Pittsburgh manager Clint Hurdle said.In the weekend series opener, Chicago right-hander Kyle Hendricks (8-9, 3.48 ERA) is scheduled to face Pittsburgh right-hander Joe Musgrove (8-11, 4.71).Hendricks will be looking to bounce back from his last start, a 10-1 Cubs loss Saturday at Cincinnati when he gave up seven runs and a career-high 12 hits, including tying a career-high with three homers, in 2 2/3 innings. That pushed Hendricks' road ERA to 5.16 in 12 starts."It's just what's happening," Hendricks said. "Obviously, we're comfortable at home. I think that goes for the group, and myself included. I'm very comfortable at home. I've just had a couple blowups on the road that have inflated that, I think. I've had some good games on the road, too. I just need to be more consistent overall." He is 4-6 with a 3.25 ERA in 14 career starts against the Pirates, including 2-2 with a 3.34 ERA in seven starts at PNC Park.Musgrove took something of a tough-luck loss Saturday, giving up three runs in 5 1/3 innings in a 3-1 loss at St. Louis. He has lost three of his past four decisions, and he has given up 10 homers over his past seven starts, seven homers over his past four starts.Against the Cubs, Musgrove is 2-2 with a 1.23 ERA in five career starts. Two of those came this year, giving up two unearned runs in 6 1/3 innings in a 2-0 loss April 11, and pitching three scoreless innings July 2 before a long rain delay ended his outing.--Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Scherzer watch in effect as Nats host BrewersFLMThe streaking Washington Nationals are finding ways to win without ace Max Scherzer.Currently holding the National League's top wild-card spot, the Nationals are riding a four-game winning streak as they open a three-game series Friday night against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers.Scherzer (back muscle) has been on the injured list for the past five weeks and last pitched on July 10. The three-time Cy Young Award winner played catch at Nationals Park on Wednesday and tossed two innings in a simulated game Tuesday, declaring himself ready to pitch -- in the majors, not the minors.Washington has not confirmed the starters for Saturday and Sunday, and there's a good chance that Scherzer could be on the hill over the weekend."I want to get in a game now. I'm ready to get in a game. I think I'm ready to pitch in the big leagues," Scherzer said.In his absence, the Nats' bats have blasted away.Washington has tallied 34 runs in its past four games, winning the final game in its series against the New York Mets on Sunday, then sweeping Cincinnati in three. Half of the runs plated came in Wednesday's 17-7 victory over the Reds.Patrick Corbin (9-5, 3.41) has been a force at home, where he possesses a 1.78 ERA in 11 starts -- good enough for the second-best home ERA in the majors.Corbin is making his first start this season against the Brewers. The lefty has appeared in eight career games versus Milwaukee (seven starts) and has been hit hard, giving up 49 hits in 40 innings on the way to a 2-5 record with a 5.18 ERA.Despite being just 6-6 in August, the Brewers have played good baseball recently, winning six of their past eight as they chase the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs in the NL Central. On Wednesday, Milwaukee called up hard-throwing reliever Ray Black, a trade deadline acquisition from San Francisco, and sent down right-hander Jake Faria.Manager Craig Counsell will turn to Black and his upper 90s fastball to bolster the back end of the bullpen, which has struggled some with closer Josh Hader."It's my bread and butter," Black, 29, said of his fastball. "It's my go-to pitch. If I get beat, I want to get beat with that." The lefty Hader has been bitten by the home run, yielding long balls in four of his last six outings and 13 in 55 2/3 innings this season.Right-hander Adrian Houser (5-5, 4.00) will make his fourth start since returning to the rotation and 10th this season. In his lone career appearance against the Nationals, a start on May 7 at home, he pitched two innings and allowed two hits and no runs in a game the Brewers won 6-0.--Field Level Media

Jays, Mariners glimpse into future to start seriesFLMIn the first meeting of the season between two teams that have long been out of postseason contention, the Seattle Mariners will visit the Toronto Blue Jays on Friday night for the opener of a three-game series.Despite losing 7-3 Wednesday after winning the first two games of a three-game series with the Texas Rangers, the Blue Jays took Thursday off having won 12 of their past 19 games. But they are also 22 games below .500.The Mariners defeated the Detroit Tigers 7-2 Thursday in the rubber match of their first series of a nine-game road trip. Seattle is also 22 games below .500. The Mariners are 10-10 in their last 20 games, though the victory Thursday was only their third in the past 12 games. The main attraction of the series figures to be Toronto shortstop Bo Bichette, whose major league career has started spectacularly since his promotion from Triple-A Buffalo on July 29.Bichette has reached base safely in all 17 of his major league games. He has passed Ted Williams (15), tied Bill Russell (17) and is second to only Rocco Baldelli (24) for the longest on-base streak to open a career for a player 21 or younger."When it comes to Bo, I'm learning about Ted Williams and Mel Ott, and all these people," Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo told reporters. "That's pretty cool. I think it's amazing, and I don't take it for granted that I'm watching that. He's making history against good pitching." "Ted was someone my dad looked up to a lot," Bichette said, referring to former major-leaguer Dante Bichette. "They were actually relatively good friends before Ted passed away. When they mentioned on TV that I had passed Ted, my dad called me, 'Dude, I get you're passing some legendary players, but Ted Williams, that's crazy.'"Dante Bichette is a 2016 inductee of the Ted Williams Museum & Hitters Hall Of Fame in St. Petersburg, Fla.Mariners third baseman Kyle Seager will take a nine-game hit streak to Toronto after going 2-for-5 with three RBIs on Thursday. He is batting .406 (13-for-32) with five homers and 12 RBIs on the streak. The Mariners selected left-hander Taylor Guilbeau from Triple-A Tacoma for the game Thursday, which would be his major league debut. He was obtained in a trade with the Washington Nationals July 31. Right-hander Brandon Brennan (shoulder inflammation) was put on the injured list."With where we are at coming up on our schedule with a couple of games with an opener and a bullpen day, we really need all of our pieces functioning," Mariners manager Scott Servais said.Guilbeau would be the 62nd player and the 40th pitcher used by Seattle this season. The Texas Rangers hold the record for players used, 64 in 2014. The 2017 Mariners also used 40 pitchers."That's what it is now?" Servais said. "Forty pitchers. We aren't done. We'll have some more in September. It's the year of opportunity." Right-hander Jacob Waguespack (3-1, 4.31 ERA) will likely start for Toronto on Friday, with Seattle expected to use an opener followed by left-hander Wade LeBlanc (6-6, 5.14).It will be Waguespack's first appearance against the Mariners, his ninth career major league appearance and sixth start.LeBlanc is 4-2 with a 3.23 ERA in 11 appearances following an opener this season. The 35-year-old has no wins or losses but does have a 5.40 ERA in three career appearances (one start) against Toronto.--Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Red Sox ready to tee off against OriolesFLMThe Boston Red Sox will take their shots at the punching bag of the American League East as they host the Baltimore Orioles for a three-game series beginning Friday. The Orioles enter having just been battered by the New York Yankees in a four-game series. Baltimore has dropped nine of its past 10 as it makes its second-to-last trip to Boston this year. The Red Sox have gone 8-5 in the teams' previous meetings. Right-hander Rick Porcello (10-9, 5.67 ERA) will get the nod in the opener opposite Orioles righty Aaron Brooks (2-6, 6.35).Baltimore begins the series needing to give up just nine more home runs to break the Cincinnati Reds' 2016 record for most served up in a season (258). Orioles pitching was tagged for nine in New York this week as the Yankees finished the year 16-2 with a record 61 homers against the club."We don't have to play them anymore," starter Dylan Bundy said. "So I guess that's a good thing." Not much better is having to face the Red Sox, who trail only New York by having hit 23 homers against the Orioles this year. J. D. Martinez leads the pack with four homers against the division rival.Martinez has been on a tear of late, his 12-game hitting streak having come to an end in Wednesday's finale of a three-game road series with the Cleveland Indians. Despite an 0-for-5, he's hitting .389 with five homers and nine RBIs this month.Rafael Devers, meanwhile, has a streak of eight straight at-bats with a hit over his past two games as Boston escaped Cleveland with a series win. Devers homered in the finale, and Xander Bogaerts added two blasts -- including the 100th of his career -- in the 5-1 triumph."I completely forgot it was my 100th. For some reason, I don't know why I forgot," said Bogaerts. "All the weeks before I kind of had it in my head. I think it's kind of good that I got it out of the way. I just completely forgot. I think just being in the game in that moment, I just completely forgot about that." Despite all the offense, the Red Sox needed seven different pitchers to piece together the win. Desperate to get back into the wild-card conversation, manager Alex Cora has shown he's willing to get creative if it leads to wins."We put ourselves in a bad position, but we understand that we've got a shot to make up some ground," Cora said. "The season is not over. We've got a month and a half and we haven't been hot, so we'll figure it out. We've got a lot of off days and September is coming, too, so we just need people to get outs and keep moving forward." Porcello has been fairly consistent at giving Boston at least five innings this season, though his 5.67 ERA is now the highest in baseball among qualified starters. Porcello was tagged for five runs in five innings against the Los Angeles Angels his last time out, but he retired 14 straight at one point of the outing.Porcello is 1-1 with a 9.00 ERA in two starts against the Orioles this year. Lifetime, he's 7-12 with a 4.92 ERA in 22 outings versus Baltimore.Brooks, added in a waiver claim last month, is still looking for his first Orioles win, having given up 23 earned runs in his first 22 innings with the club. The Houston Astros roughed him up for nine runs in three innings in his last start.Brooks has faced Boston three times (two starts), going 1-1 with a 4.61 ERA.--Field Level Media

Betts' blast in the eighth capped the scoring.HONORING NICKThe grandchildren of late Boston Globe baseball columnist Nick Cafardo threw out a ceremonial first pitch and announced ''play ball'' before Red Sox players ran onto the field. Cafardo died at age 62 after suffering an embolism last February while covering Red Sox spring training in Fort Myers, Fla.CASH WOESAndrew Cashner's solid start with Baltimore - he went 9-3 with a 3.83 ERA in 17 starts - earned him a midseason trade to contending Boston, but the former Orioles starter has since been demoted to the bullpen with a 1-4 record and 7.52 ERA for the Red Sox.''Cash was wonderful for all of us here and (I) wish him the best after this series,'' Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said. ''I'd like to see him do well.'' ROYAL TREATThe Red Sox are offering free admission to fans under the age of 18 for Thursday afternoon's conclusion of their weather-suspended game against Kansas City, which will resume tied 4-4 in the 10th inning. An admission fee of $5 for adults will be donated to the Jimmy Fund.TRAINER'S ROOMOrioles: RF DJ Stewart went 0-for-4 in his return after not playing since June 5 at Texas, where he suffered a concussion after taking a ball off the head on a missed catch. ''He's had obviously a tough couple months physically and just some bad breaks,'' Hyde said. ''We're hoping he can stay healthy the rest of the year and get a lot of opportunity to play, prove what he can do.'' Red Sox: LHP David Price (left wrist cyst) played catch on flat ground before the game. Manager Alex Cora hopes Price will be able to throw off a mound in the coming week. Price went on the 10-day injured list last Thursday after receiving a shot of cortisone to treat the cyst. . 1B Steve Pearce (low back strain) has yet to resume running. He last played May 31 against the Yankees.UP NEXTOrioles: RHP Asher Wojciechowski (2-5, 4.84 ERA) had a career-high 10 strikeouts while allowing one hit over 7 1/3 scoreless frames against Boston on July 21.Red Sox: LHP Eduardo Rodriguez (13-5, 4.31) is 0-1 with a 5.60 ERA in three starts since matching his career high for wins on July 27 versus the Yankees.---More MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/-Sports

After day off, Rays seek bounce-back vs. TigersFLMThe Tampa Bay Rays had their road winning streak snapped on Wednesday. They'll get a gift upon returning home -- a weekend series against the floundering Detroit Tigers. The Rays had won nine straight outside of Tropicana Field before falling to San Diego 7-2 on Wednesday. Tampa captured the first five games of a West Coast swing."Five and one, you can't be mad at that," outfielder Tommy Pham said of his team's record in the six-game trip, per MLB.com. "We've been playing great. Now we have to take it home and play great there." They'll be without the services of outfielder Avisail Garcia, who was placed on the 10-day injured list with an oblique strain. The Rays are hopeful he won't be out much longer than that. Garcia was removed for a pinch hitter in the seventh inning on Tuesday after feeling some discomfort."We cannot have Avi go down for a significant amount of time," Rays manager Kevin Cash said, per MLB.com. "I'm optimistic that we got it early enough. We didn't send him back out there, obviously we pinch-hit for him. He felt a little tweak in there. (We) shut him down, and keep our fingers crossed that it's close to a minimum stay." Tampa Bay took two of three from Detroit in early June with the aid of a dominant performance by Charlie Morton, who will start Friday's game. The veteran right-hander held the Tigers to five hits in seven innings and struck out eight in a 4-0 victory on June 5. In three career starts, he's 1-1 with a 2.70 ERA against Detroit.Morton (13-4, 2.90 ERA) gave up four runs in six innings while striking out 10 at Seattle on Saturday. He's racked up 32 strikeouts while walking just two in his last four starts. He'll be opposed by left-hander Daniel Norris, who's struggled in his last two starts, allowing a combined eight earned runs -- including five homers -- in 8 2/3 innings.Norris lasted just three innings while throwing 80 pitches in a 10-2 loss to Kansas City on Sunday. The Royals took him deep three times as Norris couldn't command his changeup."I tried to change my grip just to see if I could find a comfortable way to throw it, but I couldn't find it," Norris told MLB.com. "They just eliminated the pitch and crushed the fastball. I couldn't get them off it." Norris (3-10, 4.94 ERA) has made five career starts against Tampa Bay, posting a 1-2 record and 4.13 ERA, including 01 with a 4.76 ERA in one start this year. The Tigers are beginning a 10-game road trip, making stops against three playoff contenders. Following the three-game weekend series, they'll play four games at Houston and three at Minnesota. They have a 19-39 road record, including a 3-14 mark since the All-Star break."We're getting into a hot box here," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "The teams we're playing are pretty good. Tampa, really good pitching, and Houston for four with one of the best teams in the game if not the best, and then up to Minnesota. They're right there in the race, too."This should be fun baseball for (us). These games mean a lot to those teams, and they should mean a lot to us as well. We're going to see where we need to get to and hopefully, we'll figure out a way to win some of them." --Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Division-leading Dodgers, Braves set for duel in AtlantaFLMThe Atlanta Braves cooled down the red-hot New York Mets on the front end of their homestand. Now they get the opportunity to slow the Los Angeles Dodgers, tied for the most wins in all of baseball, when the two division leaders open a three-game series on Friday at Atlanta's SunTrust Park.Atlanta took two of three this week from the Mets, who entered the series having won 15 of 17 games. Next up is a Los Angeles team that has won 12 of its last 15 games. But both the Braves and Dodgers enter their series on a losing note.NL West-leading Los Angeles (81-42) was beaten 13-7 by the Miami Marlins on Thursday, while NL East-leading Atlanta (72-51) dropped a 10-8 slugfest to the Mets to miss out on the sweep. This will be the second series between the teams this season, after the Dodgers swept a three-game set against the Braves in Los Angeles in May.Friday's opener will feature Atlanta rookie right-hander Mike Soroka (10-2, 2.32 ERA) against Los Angeles righty Kenta Maeda (8-8, 4.12).Maeda, 31, is in his fourth season since joining the team from a successful career in Japan. He is 2-0 with a 0.68 ERA in two career starts against the Braves. Maeda has allowed only two runs (one earned) and eight hits in 13 1/3 combined innings against Atlanta. He did not face the Braves in 2018 nor in their previous series this season. Before his most recent start, Maeda suffered through back-to-back shaky outings, touched up for 11 runs over 6 2/3 innings against the Colorado Rockies and San Diego Padres. That concluded a run in which Maeda was 0-6 over 10 starts, placing his status in the rotation in jeopardy. But he rebounded last Saturday, throwing seven scoreless innings against the Arizona Diamondbacks."I was able to bring myself up and get more confident," he told reporters after the game.Maeda relied more heavily on his fastball against Arizona and achieved better results. The change was obvious to Dodgers manager Dave Roberts."You can see the awkward swings they were getting," Roberts said. "He was striking the fastball, getting ahead, getting back in the count with the breaking ball. His fastball has life. When he throws it for a strike, located, it beats the bat and makes everything else play up." Soroka is coming off a strong showing at Miami. He fired seven scoreless innings against the Marlins last Saturday, but was victimized when the Atlanta bullpen squandered the lead and left him with no decision. Atlanta manager Brian Snitker opted to pinch hit for Soroka in the eighth inning, even though he had only thrown 82 pitches."He went far enough," Snitker told the media after the game. "If he goes seven innings, he's done his job. We have to be able to cover two innings this time of year." Soroka's last win was on July 14, even though his ERA in the ensuing five games is 2.56. He will be making his first career start against the Dodgers.Los Angeles first baseman Cody Bellinger hit his league-leading 40th home run on Thursday. The Dodgers lead the league in home runs, with the Braves second. Atlanta hit six home runs on Thursday."I wouldn't say it's putting any more pressure to hit homers," Bellinger said. "I'm trying to stay within myself every day and keep going." --Field Level Media

Bellinger hits 41st homer, Dodgers beat Braves 8-3ATLANTA Cody Bellinger hit his 41st home run, Max Muncy and Justin Turner connected against reliever Sean Newcomb in the seventh inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Atlanta Braves 8-3 Friday night in a matchup of NL division leaders. It was nothing new for the powerful Dodgers, who set a major league record with 22 homers in a five-game span when Will Smith launched a two-run shot off Jerry Blevins in the eighth.Los Angeles continued to dominate the Braves, too. The Dodgers improved to 18-6 against Atlanta since 2016, using Muncy's three-run homer and Turner's solo shot to lead 6-3 after Newcomb relieved starter Mike Soroka.Los Angeles led 1-0 in the second when Bellinger crushed a homer to right-center, his fourth in five games to take the NL lead. He began the night tied with Angels star Mike Trout for most in the majors. The NL East-leading Braves pounced on Kenta Maeda in the bottom half, going ahead 3-1 on Matt Joyce's two-run double and Ronald Acuna Jr.'s hard RBI single to left-center.Maeda avoided further trouble when Freddie Freeman lined out with the bases loaded. The right-hander struck out seven straight before Josh Donaldson singled with two outs in the fifth. The two-time defending NL champion Dodgers, who eliminated the Braves from the postseason last year and swept them at home in May, got a run back in the third off Soroka on Joc Pederson's RBI single.Soroka has gone six straight starts without a win, but was in line for his 11th when Newcomb replaced him with two outs in the seventh. Soroka allowed three runs and seven hits. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the sixth when Edwin Rios grounded into a double play.Muncy's go-ahead homer sailed into the seats in right-center as the sellout crowd moaned. Turner followed with a drive to the same part of the ballpark, the 14th time the Dodgers have gone back-to-back this season. The NL West leaders are 13-3 since July 30.TRAINER'S ROOMDodgers: Manager Dave Roberts said INF Chris Tayler (broken left forearm) and utilityman Kike Hernandez (left hand sprain) could return by the middle of next week's homestand against Toronto and the New York Yankees. Both are on rehab assignments.Braves: CF Ender Inciarte left after hurting his right hamstring while rounding third base to score a run. Rafael Ortega took his place. ... SS Dansby Swanson has missed 22 games with a bruised right foot and has no timetable yet for a rehab assignment.UP NEXTDodgers: LHP Hyun-Jin Ryu (12-2) pitched seven scoreless innings last Sunday against Arizona and leads the majors with a 1.45 ERA. In four career starts against Atlanta, he is 1-1 with a 1.98 ERA.Braves: RHP Mike Foltynewicz (4-5, 6.24 ERA) will face the Dodgers for the fourth time. GAME PREVIEW
Minor looks to stop Rangers' bleeding vs. TwinsFLMThe Texas Rangers have allowed 38 runs in their last four games, including 10 in the first four innings on Thursday night in an eventual 13-6 loss to the American League Central-leading Minnesota Twins in the opener of their four-game series in Arlington, Texas. The good news for Chris Woodward's club is that All-Star left-hander Mike Minor (11-6, 2.90 ERA) will be on the mound for Game 2. He will be opposed by right-hander Jake Odorizzi (13-5, 3.44) in what has the makings of a pitcher's duel.Minor is 4-1 with a 2.18 ERA in 12 career appearances (one start) against the Twins. That start came in a 5-4 win last season at Target Field, when he allowed one run on three hits over six innings.Minor has won his last three starts, including the last two by 1-0 scores at Cleveland and Milwaukee. He pitched a combined 15 innings in those two games and allowed just 11 hits and two walks while striking out 18.Now he faces a Minnesota team that is on pace to obliterate the major league single-season home run record of 267 set by the New York Yankees last season. The Twins clubbed three more homers in Thursday night's victory -- the 36th time this season they've hit three or more home runs in a game -- and have hit 236 homers this season."This is a team that if they get ahead in the count, they're the most dangerous team in baseball," Woodward told reporters of the Twins after Thursday's loss. "We've got to be willing to go after these guys, attack to certain areas. If we don't, they're going to take severe advantage of those counts. They did that today." Odorizzi is 4-1 with a 3.38 ERA in seven career starts against Texas, including 2-0 with a 2.08 ERA in two career starts in Arlington. He has won two of his last three starts this season, including a 4-1 victory over Cleveland on Saturday in Minneapolis when he blanked the Indians over 5 2/3 innings on six hits and four walks. He struck out six.The Twins pounded out 14 hits in the series opener while building an 11-0 lead, including home runs by standout rookie infielder Luis Arraez, Eddie Rosario and Miguel Sano. Marwin Gonzalez continued his hot hitting by going 4-for-5 with a double and two RBIs, while Jorge Polanco and Jake Cave each had two hits and two runs scored as Minnesota moved on from a tough 6-5 loss at Milwaukee on Wednesday."The game plan wasn't anything different than it has been all year," said Cave, who was called up from Triple-A when starting center field Byron Buxton went on the injured list with a shoulder injury. "Coming off a loss, you want to come back with a win, especially with a new series. We just wanted to get on (Rangers starter Pedro Payano) early, and the guys did a really good job." "The guys are swinging the bats well," Minnesota manager Rocco Baldelli said. "We started out pretty good the first couple of innings and just carried it out. There were good swings throughout the game all the way up and down the lineup. ... I thought we drove the ball well. I thought we impacted the ball well." --Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Royals' Montgomery tasked with slowing Mets, SyndergaardFLMFor the first time since back-to-back series -- separated by an offseason and a parade -- at the end of the 2015 season and the beginning of the 2016 season, the Kansas City Royals will host the New York Mets, beginning Friday night in the first of a three-game series.Right-hander Noah Syndergaard (8-5, 3.89 ERA) will get the start for the Mets, while left-hander Mike Montgomery (2-5, 5.19 ERA) will start for the Royals. The Royals defeated the Mets in five games in the 2015 World Series, then opened the 2016 campaign by raising the world championship banner in front of their vanquished foes. There aren't many players remaining on the two squads from the 2015 postseason. The only active player on the Royals' roster is left fielder Alex Gordon, who delivered a clutch home run in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie Game 1 at 4-4. The Royals eventually won 5-4 in 14 innings. The World Series MVP was catcher Salvador Perez, who has been on the 60-day injured list since spring training and will miss the entire season following Tommy John surgery.Left-hander Danny Duffy, who appeared out of the bullpen in Games 1, 3 and 4 of the World Series, is on the 10-day injured list with hamstring tightness. The Mets have six players still on the club: outfielders Michael Conforto and Juan Lagares, and pitchers Jacob deGrom, Jeurys Familia, Steven Matz and Syndergaard.Ruben Tejada, who was injured in 2015 NL Division Series against the Dodgers and missed the 2015 World Series, rejoined the Mets on Wednesday after being gone from the team since that injury.Syndergaard was the starter for the Mets in Game 3 in New York, the only game the Mets won in the series. He's riding a streak of six straight games with at least seven innings pitched, and he's 2-0 with a 2.25 ERA in two career regular-season starts against the Royals.Montgomery is coming off his best start since being acquired by the Royals in July. He pitched seven scoreless innings and set a career high with 12 strikeouts. He scattered four hits and didn't walk a batter.Montgomery is 1-0 with a 1.88 ERA in four appearances (two starts) in his career against the Mets, including 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief this season with the Cubs."It was pretty enjoyable to watch," Royals manager Ned Yost said of Montgomery's last start. "You could tell he was right from the onset. He was on top of his game. Twelve punchouts, no walks, commanding his pitches. I take it back, I think he went 3-0 on the first hitter, I thought, 'Oh man.' He ended up striking him out, striking out the second hitter, striking out the third hitter. He looked great." The Mets are hoping to continue a hot stretch that has them in the thick of the playoff race. They're 10-4 in August, including an eight-game winning streak.Rookie Pete Alonso, who has been the story for much of the year, has cooled a bit. But that's about to change, according to Mickey Callaway, the Mets' manager."He's getting kind of down about some of the outs he made," Callaway said Thursday before the Mets beat the Braves 10-8 in Atlanta. "We had a long talk after the game (Wednesday) about it, but he's performing better in the last 10 days than he did to make the All-Star team." In his first at-bat Thursday night, Alonso slugged homer No. 39, tying the National League rookie record set in 2017 by the Dodgers' Cody Bellinger.--Field Level Media

Montgomery outpitches Syndergaard as Royals top Mets 4-1KANSAS CITY, Mo. Mike Montgomery outpitched Noah Syndergaard, and the Kansas City Royals ended their scoreless drought Friday night in a 4-1 victory over the New York Mets. The hottest team in the majors until this week, the Mets have lost four of five after a 15-1 stretch propelled them into the crowded NL wild-card race. They dropped the series opener in a rematch of the 2015 World Series won by Kansas City in five games.Montgomery (3-5) pitched six strong innings and allowed just one unearned run on five hits while striking out three and walking two. It was the second consecutive start in which he didn't permit an earned run, following seven smooth innings Saturday in a 7-0 win over Detroit. The left-hander is 2-3 with the Royals since they acquired him from the Chicago Cubs.Ian Kennedy tossed a scoreless ninth for his 21st save in 24 opportunities. He retired Amed Rosario on a bases-loaded grounder to end it.The Royals, coming off back-to-back shutout losses to the St. Louis Cardinals, finally snapped a 22-inning scoreless string in the fifth. And it was the bottom three guys in the lineup who came through. After Ryan O'Hearn singled, Meibrys Viloria and Nicky Lopez followed with consecutive RBI doubles off Syndergaard to give Kansas City a 2-1 lead. The Royals added a couple of insurance runs in the eighth when Brett Phillips drew a bases-loaded walk from Edwin Diaz, and Bubba Starling singled home a run.Outside of the fifth, Syndergaard (8-6) gave up little else. He threw six innings and allowed just the two runs on five hits with six strikeouts, snapping a streak of six consecutive starts of at least seven innings. But after an RBI single from Michael Conforto in the third, the Mets couldn't generate anything else on offense.SOLER ON A TEARJorge Soler extended his torrid streak at the plate. The Royals' designated hitter reached base in all four plate appearances with a double and three walks. Over his last nine games, he is hitting .450 with a .639 on-base percentage and a 1.292 slugging percentage for a 1.930 OPS. In that span, Soler has eight home runs and 12 RBIs.TRAINER'S ROOMRoyals: LHP Danny Duffy (left hamstring strain) threw a two-inning simulated game and looked good, according to manager Ned Yost. The team will see how Duffy feels on Saturday, then decide whether to have him pitch another simulated game or send him out for a rehab assignment. ... SS Adalberto Mondesi (left shoulder) took batting practice on the field for the first time since getting hurt July 16.Mets: Left fielder J. D. Davis exited with a calf problem after beating out an infield single late in the game. ... RHP Robert Gsellman was unavailable due to triceps soreness he's been dealing with for a couple of days. ... Nimmo, on the 60-day injured list, hasn't played since May 20 because of a bulging disk in his neck.ROSTER MOVESRoyals: Designated OF Billy Hamilton for assignment and recalled outfielder Brett Phillips from Triple-A Omaha. The speedy Hamilton, who signed a one-year deal with the Royals in the offseason, hit .211 in 93 games and stole 18 bases. Phillips appeared in 36 games for Kansas City in 2018 after coming over in a trade with Milwaukee, but had spent all of this season at Omaha before making his season debut on Friday. In those 36 games, Phillips hit .188 with two home runs.Mets: Selected the contract of RHP Paul Sewald from Triple-A Syracuse and optioned RHP Drew Gagnon to their top farm club. In addition, RHP Tim Peterson was designated for assignment. This is Sewald's third stint in the big leagues this season.UP NEXTMets ace Jacob deGrom (7-7) faces Jakob Junis (8-10) in the second game of the series Saturday.---More MLB: https://apnews.com/MLB and https://twitter.com/-Sports

GAME PREVIEW
Rockies look to build off win as Marlins visitFLMIn a season that went from playoff hopes to now looking ahead to 2020, the Colorado Rockies got a ray of sunshine Wednesday afternoon.Staring at a third straight loss and getting swept at home by Arizona, All-Star third baseman Nolan Arenado came through with a two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to turn a potential one-run loss into a 7-6 win.It was a little reprieve for Colorado, which had lost 28 of 37 games before Arenado's blast, and it could provide momentum for a weekend series against the Miami Marlins. The Rockies will send Jon Gray to the mound on Friday to face Miami's Sandy Alcantara in a rematch from the first weekend of the season.Alcantara, the team's only All-Star, outdueled Gray on March 31 in a 3-0 Marlins win, pitching eight innings in what remains Alcantara's only time facing Colorado. Gray went 6 2/3 innings, giving up all three runs in a hard-luck loss. While Alcantara (4-10, 4.44 ERA) hasn't face the Rockies otherwise, Gray has a little more seasoning against Miami; in six career starts, he is 2-3 with a 5.14 ERA.Gray (10-8, 4.06) was scheduled to pitch Tuesday against the Diamondbacks before being a late scratch due to left ankle soreness, but he is well enough to be slotted into the opener of the three-game series. He has struggled in his first two August starts, going 0-1 with a 6.52 ERA in 9 2/3 innings after a solid July in which he posted an ERA of 3.99.The Rockies are hoping to ride the excitement of Wednesday's win, when Arenado hit the first pitch he saw from Arizona closer Archie Bradley down the line in left for his third walk-off homer of his career. Arenado and his teammates have been frustrated with the nearly two-month slide, and a win gave them a chance to enjoy an off day before facing Miami."It's been a grind for all of us individually and as a team," Arenado said after the game. "It feels good to come out with a win right there." Miami hasn't done much winning this season, although a 13-7 triumph over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday salvaged the final game of the three-game series. The Marlins went 3-4 on their homestand before heading to Denver with questions about what the team will look like in 2020.Manager Don Mattingly, who is in the final season of a four-year deal, wants to stay on as manager beyond 2019, but his status is up in the air."I'd love to be back, especially if they want you back," Mattingly said Wednesday. "You don't want to be anywhere that you don't feel like it's the best situation. You don't want to get in the way of anything. If they think they want to go in (another) direction, then that's something you just deal with at the time." Chief executive officer Derek Jeter said Mattingly deserves to know his future sooner rather than later, but other priorities have taken precedence so far."There hasn't been a decision yet," Jeter said Wednesday. "To be honest with you, we've been so focused on getting through the trade deadline and seeing what we can do."At the end of every year, we sit down and evaluate all members of the organization, whether it's the manager, coaches, player development, scouting, front office." --Field Level Media

Both have been out since mid-June.WELCOME BACKThe Marlins activated Walker from the 10-day injured list before the game and designated infielder Deven Marrero for assignment. Walker missed 12 games with a right index finger sprain.''It's good to get Walk back, gives us a lefty, a switch-hitter and a guy who can play both corners,'' manager Don Mattingly said. ''It just helps our lineup, lets us stretch it different ways.'' UP NEXTMiami will send RHP Hector Noesi (0-2, 8.18) against Colorado RHP German Marquez (11-5, 4.57) in the second game of the weekend series on Saturday night. Samardzija, Giants aim to stay hot in ArizonaFLMThe San Francisco Giants' rise to contenders in the National League wild-card race has coincided with the resurgence of veteran right-hander Jeff Samardzija. The 34-year-old will try to continue his hot streak Friday night in Phoenix in the second game of a four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks.Samardzija (9-9, 3.55 ERA) is 5-2 with a 1.95 ERA and 0.81 WHIP in eight starts since the calendar flipped from June to July, when he started more prominently featuring his four-seam fastball and cutter, curbing use of his sinker and virtually eliminating the curveball. His last outing was a one-run, two-hit effort over eight innings in a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday."He's in a really good place as far as commanding the ball, all four pitches, both sides of the plate, pitches up," manager Bruce Bochy said after that game. The Giants were 11 games under .500 -- second-worst in the NL -- when Samardzija took the mound on July 1, but they moved into a tie with the Diamondbacks at 61-61 with a 7-0 victory on Thursday night."Different guy, but same confidence," Samardzija said on NBCSports.com, talking about his bounce-back season after an injury-plagued 2018. "Which feels good, you know, that you're going to go out there and get outs, and make it nice and quick and get your offense in the dugout."For a while, it was such a grind just to go out there and get an out, it didn't feel good. You never forget that." He'll face an Arizona lineup that was quiet Thursday night against starter Dereck Rodriguez and two relievers. The Diamondbacks had three singles and didn't get a runner to second base."I really don't know what to say about this game," said Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo. "Sometimes, things happen on a baseball field that leave you scratching your head. I thought we were playing good baseball -- and we are playing good baseball, with the exception of today's game. ..."I don't want to take anything away from the game planning that the Giants did, but we just didn't play up to our capabilities today." It certainly will help having All-Star Ketel Marte back in the lineup after he had Thursday off for a rare day of rest. Marte is hitting .320 with 24 home runs and a .947 OPS.Arizona will be looking for the first win from trade-deadline acquisition Mike Leake (9-9, 4.58 ERA).The right-hander is 0-1 with an 8.71 ERA in two starts after coming over from the Seattle Mariners. He has given up 21 hits and three walks in 10 1/3 innings, and he is 5-2 with a 4.62 ERA in 11 career appearances (10 starts) against the Giants.Samardzija is 4-5 with a 4.39 ERA in 19 appearances (14 starts) vs. Arizona, including two starts this season with a 1-1 record and a 6.35 ERA.Giants outfielder Alex Dickerson has pinch-hitting appearances in the past two games after missing 12 games because of a right oblique strain. The left-handed hitter figures to start Friday against Leake.Dickerson is hitting .378 with six homers and 24 RBIs in 32 games with San Francisco after being traded from the San Diego Padres on June 10.--Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
A's must beat Verlander, Astros to gain groundFLMTwo veteran pitchers who have had trouble keeping the ball in the park this season seek to cool hot-hitting opponents when the Houston Astros host the Oakland Athletics on Friday night for the second time in their four-game series. The second-place A's managed to chip into their large deficit in the American League West with a 7-6 win Thursday night in a series opener that featured 10 homers, five by each team. The Astros retained an 8 1/2-game cushion in the division despite losing a game in which the home runs outnumbered the non-homer hits 10-5.Right-hander Tanner Roark (7-8, 4.06 ERA) will attempt to get the A's a game closer in Friday's rematch, opposed by Astros ace righty Justin Verlander (15-4, 2.82).Roark has gone 1-1 in two starts since joining the A's in a trade at the deadline. He has served up two homers in 11 2/3 innings, raising his season total to 16.The 32-year-old has faced the Astros just twice in his career, going 2-0 with a 2.53 ERA.Having enjoyed some success acquiring 30-something pitchers with in-season moves the last two years, the A's announced Thursday the addition of Matt Harvey off the scrap heap. The 30-year-old right-hander had been released by the Los Angeles Angels after going 3-5 with a 7.09 ERA this season."I think we are a place that maybe even some of the guys who are free agents look to," A's manager Bob Melvin told reporters before Thursday's game. "We're not afraid to take a chance on a guy who's been banged up a little bit." While Harvey will begin his A's career in the minors, Astros manager AJ Hinch announced Thursday that his Saturday starter likely will have to be plucked from Houston's minor league system. He said it probably will be either left-hander Framber Valdez or righty Rogelio Armenteros, a decision that Hinch noted would be made Friday. The Astros have an opening in their starting rotation because Gerrit Cole sustained a hamstring injury earlier in the week. Hinch updated Cole's status Thursday, saying his 14-game winner is expected to return next week."We've also tossed around the idea of a bullpen-type day," Hinch added of Saturday's possibilities. "We're a little thin in the bullpen going into this series and we may or may not want to extend that in the Saturday game." The Astros used just two relievers for a total of 2 2/3 innings in Thursday's loss, and now turn to Verlander, who has pitched seven or more innings 13 times this season. He's also allowed homers in 19 of his 25 starts, but only one (to Stephen Piscotty) in 14 innings against the A's this season.Verlander has gone 2-0 against the A's this year, allowing just one earned run and six hits in those 14 innings. That ran his career regular-season totals against Oakland to 14-6 with a 2.52 ERA in 22 starts.Despite Thursday's loss, the Astros have beaten the A's in nine of their 12 meetings this season.--Field Level Media
