Postponement lets Tigers, White Sox mull wild opener The opening game turned into a wild ride. The weather got a little crazy the next day. That allowed the Detroit Tigers and Chicago White Sox to rest up for the finale of their abbreviated weekend series.Capped off by Tim Anderson's walk-off homer, the host White Sox rallied from a seven-run deficit to claim a 12-11 victory on Friday."It turned into a circus game -- and they hit the last home run and ended up on top," Detroit manager Ron Gardenhire said.Saturday's scheduled game was postponed until July 3 due to a freak snowstorm in the Midwest. The teams will return to action on Sunday with Detroit left-hander Matthew Boyd and Chicago right-hander Reynaldo Lopez the scheduled starting pitchers. It will be difficult to top the drama the teams produced on Friday, including one of the most bizarre occurrences in recent memory. The Tigers, who hit a season-high five homers, seemingly had things under control at the midway point. They were up 9-2 heading to the bottom of the fifth before the White Sox erupted for nine runs over the next three innings.Chicago should have scored another run, but Jose Abreu, who homered earlier in the game, passed Anderson rounding first base after hitting an apparent three-run homer in the seventh inning. Anderson was tagging up at the bag, and Abreu didn't notice until it was too late. The play went as a two-run single."That's the first time I've ever seen it," White Sox manager Rick Renteria said. The White Sox's prized rookie, left fielder Eloy Jimenez, exited in the third inning after jamming his right foot while trying to climb the wall chasing Grayson Greiner's home run. X-rays didn't show any broken bones, but he came away with a sprained ankle."Right now, there's a little bit more (pain) than normal," Jimenez told the media after the game, "but I'm going to be all right." Anderson has been red hot at the plate all season, and the homer was his fourth hit of the game. He is batting .402 on the year."I always want to be in that moment," he said. "Obviously, I've been feeling good, and I didn't miss my pitch." Lopez (1-3, 7.46 ERA) was a tough-luck loser in his most recent start at Detroit last Sunday. He gave up three runs, two earned, in six innings while striking out a season-high eight. He is 1-2 with a 3.20 ERA in eight career starts against the Tigers.Boyd (2-1, 3.16 ERA) won his latest start, holding the Boston Red Sox to three runs on three hits in seven innings on Tuesday. He is 2-4 with a 4.45 ERA in 10 career starts vs. the White Sox.With three of the Tigers' original starting staff on the shelf, left-hander Ryan Carpenter was expected to be called up from Triple-A Toledo to start Saturday. The postponement gave Detroit the luxury of waiting a little longer to bring up another starter. However, the unscheduled day off also gave the Tigers more time to stew over Friday's collapse."It's tough," Tigers catcher John Hicks told the Detroit News. "You get 15 hits, you expect to win. The ball rolls down hill and it starts heading down hill and it just picked up speed. We couldn't stop the bleeding. It happens. We move on." --Field Level Media
