Chacin, Yelich gear up Brewers for visit with Reds Jhoulys Chacin, the Milwaukee Brewers' pitcher, will take the mound at Cincinnati on Tuesday trying to repeat on his Opening Day victory over the St. Louis Cardinals.Jhoulys Chacin, the Milwaukee Brewers' source of power in the opener, will see if his bat can make a difference again when he digs in against the Reds. Not only did Chacin start the season 1-0 when he allowed three runs over 5 1/3 innings against the Cardinals on Thursday, he also hit the second home run of his career when he took St. Louis' Miles Mikolas deep in the fifth inning to give his team what would ultimately be the game-winning run.Chacin did give up two home runs on the mound in his season debut so there remains a bit of room for improvement against a revamped Reds lineup that now includes Matt Kemp, Yasiel Puig and Jose Iglesias."Giving up two home runs, those weren't good pitches," Chacin said, according to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "But after that, I just tried to make pitches and used my slider a little more and just tried to make good pitches." Chacin did not have a decision in two outings against the Reds last season, posting a 4.82 ERA over 9 1/3 innings. He is 2-3 lifetime against the Reds in 10 appearances (eight starts) with a 3.86 ERA. The Reds' Joey Votto is 7-for-21 (.333) against him with two home runs.Christian Yelich hit a home run in each of the first four games against the Cardinals to tie a major league record at the start of the season. But the Reds stopped that run Monday behind Tanner Roark and four relievers, although Yelich did have a ninth-inning double and scored the go-ahead run in a 4-3 Milwaukee victory. The next starter who gets a chance to tame the hot bat of Yelich is Reds right-hander Anthony DeSclafani, who will be making his first start of the season. The Reds had a rain out over the weekend so they are just now getting to the fifth spot in their rotation.Yelich has two home runs against DeSclafani in 12 career at-bats.A healthy DeSclafani will be key in helping Cincinnati's rotation show improvement after a year when the starters delivered a combined 5.02 ERA. It was the second worst ERA in the National League from a starting staff last season, ahead of just the San Diego Padres (5.09).In August of last year, DeSclafani helped improve that number with a 2.62 ERA over the month. But over his final six starts he had a 6.75 ERA and did not win a game.Just making his first scheduled start of the year is a victory. DeSclafani did not pitch in 2017 with an elbow ligament strain and opened 2018 with an oblique strain. His goal in the early going is to improve on his curveball and changeup."Obviously, I would have liked to have those months reversed and ended on a solid note, but it wasn't the case," DeSclafani said, according to mlb.com. "It's confirmation that I needed to make some changes for sure, but last year is forgotten about. I'm not going to let one month, or a year, determine how I feel about the next." DeSclafani was 1-1 with a 6.00 ERA in three starts against the Brewers last season and is 3-3 lifetime against them with a 4.91 ERA in eight appearances (seven starts).--Field Level Media
