Tigers, Jays resume series with one shutout apiece Charlie Montoyo arrived at the interview room in a soaked uniform after the Toronto Blue Jays players and coaches helped him celebrate his first win as a major league manager Friday night. The question remains how many more wins his young, rebuilding team will get for their first-year manager after a 6-0 blanking of the visiting Detroit Tigers."I got a shower with beer, shampoo and everything else," Montoyo said. "That's what makes it so special, how happy they were for my first win in the major leagues." Montoyo replaced John Gibbons as manager in the offseason as the Blue Jays entered a full rebuilding mode. The Tigers and Blue Jays have split the first two games of their four-game series, which resumes Saturday with a pair of right-handers as the starters, Spencer Turnbull for Detroit and Toronto's Aaron Sanchez. Each win has come via a shutout. Jordan Zimmermann shut out the Blue Jays on one hit and no walks in seven innings on Opening Day on Thursday, although the Tigers needed a two-run homer in the 10th inning from Christin Stewart for the 2-0 victory.Matt Shoemaker returned the favor Friday night, and Freddy Galvis and Justin Smoak each supplied two-run singles in the Blue Jays' 6-0 win.Tigers hitters have struck out 24 times in the first two games and Blue Jays batters have whiffed 19 times."Hit the ball," Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said. "That always works. If you hit the ball, then you won't strike out. They're trying, the guys are into it. It's early here, you know. We've played two ball games and we're not going to be alarmed about too much right now. That's what happens early in the season, and hopefully we'll get to swinging a little bit better as we go along." Turnbull had made an Opening Day major league roster for the first time this season. In four career major league games (three starts), all in 2018, the right-hander is 0-2 with a 6.06 ERA, with 15 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings. In five games (two starts) this spring training, Turnbull was 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA with 15 strikeouts in 15 innings. He has never faced the Blue Jays.Sanchez won his only start last season against the Tigers, allowing two hits, one run and three walks while striking out seven in six innings. In seven career games (four starts) against the Tigers, he is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA with 30 strikeouts in 30 innings. After winning the American League ERA title in 2016, Sanchez has been limited to a total of 28 starts, including 20 last season, over the past two seasons.Sanchez was sidelined by a finger blister for much of the 2017 season, and last season he injured his finger in an accident with a suitcase. He had surgery on the right index finger in September.Sanchez, who said he had altered his pitching mechanics because of the finger problems, looked more like the 2016 version of himself during spring training when he was 2-0 with a 1.53 ERA in five starts, striking out 14 in 17 2/3 innings."I honestly had to relearn how to throw this year," Sanchez said during spring training."Obviously, my arm feels good, but it went through altered mechanics and creating bad habits and doing a ton of crazy stuff. ... It puts a toll on your body. It was just trying to get from Point A to Point B without hurting. I was just trying to get the pitch across the plate without there being any sort of discomfort." --Field Level Media
