GAME PREVIEW
Nov 21, 2019ATLANTA In a way, the 2020 season has already begun for the Atlanta Falcons and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With six weeks to go, neither team has a realistic path to the playoffs. Sunday's game will be as much about the future as the present. The Falcons (3-7) want to keep building on their stunning turnaround the past two weeks. After a six-game losing streak, they bounced back with perhaps the most surprising result of the season - a 26-9 upset at first-place New Orleans - followed by a 29-3 rout at Carolina. Beginning a stretch of three straight home games, the Falcons can gain additional momentum heading into next season - and perhaps remove lingering doubts about coach Dan Quinn's job status. ''Yes, we wish we had been playing like this earlier in the season,'' Falcons safety Ricardo Allen said. ''But, man, we've just got to take it for what it is, know that we're doing it now, and try to finish out the season the way we know we can. '' Tampa Bay (3-7) has the same record but is heading in the opposite direction with five losses in its past six games. The Bucs' biggest issue is whether to stick with quarterback Jameis Winston, who is earning nearly $21 million in the final year of the contract he signed as the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2015. Winston has thrown for 300-plus yards in a franchise-record five consecutive games, but that's only part of the story. He was intercepted four times in last Sunday's 34-17 loss to New Orleans and leads the NFL with 22 turnovers, including 18 picks. The fifth-year pro knows that he's got to clean up his game - and he may be running out of time to do it in Tampa Bay. ''Whether (the turnovers are) coming from me, whether it's anybody else - it's always my fault,'' Winston said. ''I'm the quarterback. '' Coach Bruce Arians sent a message to a roster filled with younger players when he released 2016 first-round draft choice Vernon Hargreaves for failing to hustle on a long pass completion. ''Nobody likes losing, but I'll never stop fighting,'' receiver Mike Evans said. ''We're going to fight until the end and live with the results. '' Some things to watch for in Sunday's game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium:DYNAMIC DUOSEvans and Chris Godwin have combined for 121 receptions and 1,880 yards - the most receiving yards by a pair of teammates through 10 games since Demaryius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders (2,059) in 2014. Evans is second in the NFL with 993 yards, seven shy of joining Hall of Famer Randy Moss as the only players to begin a career with six consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. Godwin has 63 catches for 887 yards. Both have seven TDs, tied for fourth in the league. The Falcons have their own dynamic duo at receiver. Six-time Pro Bowler Julio Jones has 59 receptions for 882 yards, while 2018 first-round pick Calvin Ridley hauled in eight catches for 143 yards and a touchdown in the victory over Carolina. ''If you like wide receiver play, this is the game to watch,'' Quinn said. ''Both teams are capable of making explosive plays. '' ON THE BRINKAfter a 2-2 start, the Bucs are closing in on missing the playoffs for the 12th consecutive season. Only the Cleveland Browns, who haven't earned a berth since 2002, have a longer postseason drought. ''We know that we have the talent,'' tight end O. J. Howard said. ''We've just got to put it all together and stop beating ourselves. '' BARNER'S ROLEThe Falcons might look to Kenjon Barner to bolster the running game if Devonta Freeman continues to be hampered by an injured toe. Brian Hill got the start in Carolina but managed only 30 yards on 15 carries. Barner had a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown - earning NFC special teams player of the week honors - and got two carries for 15 yards in his limited time with the offense. ''I'm a versatile guy. I can run the ball. I can catch the ball. I can run routes out of the backfield,'' Barner said. ''I bring a lot to the table. '' SACK ATTACKThe Falcons will need to keep an eye on Tampa Bay linebacker Shaquil Barrett, who ranks second in the NFL with 11 1/2 sacks. ''On a team that has a very good front seven in a number of spots, he stands out,'' Quinn said. The Falcons have suddenly found a knack for getting to the quarterback after managing an NFL-low seven sacks through their first eight games. They piled up 11 sacks in their past two victories, led by Adrian Clayborn, Vic Beasley and Grady Jarrett. RICO'S NEW POSITIONThe Falcons improved play in the secondary can partly be attributed to a position change for Allen, who shifted from free to strong safety a few weeks ago. One of the team's most respected players and vocal leaders, Allen believes he's in better position to influence the game at strong safety. ''As a free safety, you're just like the anchor of the defense,'' Allen said. ''Sometimes, you don't get any work. Now, I'm more in the mix. I'm covering backs. I'm covering tight ends. I'm covering receivers. I'm blitzing. I'm playing zone. I'm showing how versatile I am. '' SHAKY SECONDARYWhile the Falcons have shown improvement against the pass, the Bucs' secondary is a mess. Tampa Bay ranks next-to-last in the NFL in both yards allowed (290. 9 yards per game) and TD passes surrendered (25). That doesn't bode well against Atlanta's Matt Ryan, who last week moved up to No. 10 on the league's career list for passing yards. ---Follow Paul Newberry on Twitter at www. twitter. com/pnewberry1963 His work can be found at https://apnews. com---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL--- Sports Writer Fred Goodall in Tampa contributed to this report.

GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019ATLANTA Vita Vea worked on the play during the final day of practice. Still, when he got the call from quarterback Jameis Winston, it was a bit of a shock. Even more stunning was the result. Vea, a 6-foot-4, 347-pound defensive lineman, hauled in a 1-yard touchdown with his first career catch, one of three scoring passes thrown by Winston to lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers past the Atlanta Falcons 35-22 on Sunday. ''I scored? '' Vea said, breaking into a hearty laugh. ''I thought it was a dream. '' Winston shook off two more interceptions to post his sixth straight 300-yard passing game, leading the Buccaneers (4-7) to just their second victory in the last seven games. Chris Godwin had seven catches for a career-best 184 yards, including a pair of touchdowns. Yet the scoring play everyone will remember was a little 1-yard pass in the final minute of the first half to Vea, a 6-foot-4, 347-pound defensive lineman who has been used as an extra blocker on offense, but never as an offensive weapon. Until now. ''The first thing I hear out there is the pass play,'' Vea said, relating how he got the call. ''Jameis looked at me and was like, `Hurry up and get set, Vita. ' And I was like, `Oh, damn, here it comes. '' 'After lining up at fullback, Vea slipped into the flat on play-action by Winston, going completely uncovered as he gobbled up the short pass. ''For some reason, I thought somebody was behind me,'' said Vea, who had not scored a touchdown since he played running back in high school. ''So right when I caught the ball, I kind of braced for impact. But no one was there. '' Atlanta (3-8) had pulled even with Tampa Bay at the bottom of the division standings with a modest two-game winning streak. But the Falcons couldn't keep the momentum going, dropping to 1-4 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in what has become a lost season for a team that reached the Super Bowl just three years ago. ''You've got to score touchdowns and we didn't do a good job of that today,'' said Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan, who has his lowest-rated game of the season. Winston has been picked off an NFL-high 20 times but completed 18 of 28 for 313 yards. His top two receivers, Mike Evans and Godwin, both went past 1,000 yards receiving for the season. But how about that big guy who now has a single yard receiving? ''I knew he was going to catch the ball no matter where it was, but it was big for team morale to get him a touchdown,'' Winston said. Godwin put Tampa Bay ahead 7-3 with a 71-yard reception in the first quarter, the first TD allowed by the Falcons in more than 10 quarters. He lined up in the slot and caught the Falcons in a mismatch, beating linebacker Deion Jones. Atlanta reclaimed the lead on Qadree Ollison's 1-yard leap into the end zone, but the Bucs took control with a dominating second quarter. Godwin reached back with one hand to make a brilliant grab for a 1-yard scoring play, and Vea's TD stretched the margin to 19-10 at the break. It should have been more, but Matt Gay yanked a couple of extra points wide left. Tampa Bay took the second-half kickoff and extended the margin, going 75 yards in nine plays capped by 4-yard touchdown run by Ronald Jones II. The Bucs again failed to convert the extra point, this time when Gay's attempt was blocked. The kicking woes became a moot point thanks to the Bucs' defensive dominance. Devin White had two of his team's six sacks, and Tampa Bay finished off the rout by knocking away the ball from Ryan on a fourth-down play in the closing minutes. Ndamukong Suh scooped it up and rumbled 6 yards for a touchdown. Vea also dumped Ryan in the fourth quarter, giving him a memorable sack-TD catch double on the day. ''I still don't believe it,'' Vea said. ''It still seems kind of surreal to me. '' SPECIAL CLUBEvans joined Randy Moss as the only players to begin their careers with six straight seasons of at least 1,000 yards receiving. It wasn`t a huge day for Evans, who was limited to 50 yards on four catches. Still, it pushed him to 1,043 yards for the season and part of a select club. ''He was a freak of nature,'' Evans said of Moss. ''He was so exciting to watch. To be in the same sentence as him is amazing. '' INJURY REPORTBuccaneers: LB White was able to return after being ordered off the field by the officials early in the second half after a helmet-to-helmet hit with teammate Andrew Adams. . . . DL Beau Allen (stinger) and CB Sean Murphy-Bunting (knee) were injured in the second half. Falcons: WR Julio Jones sustained a shoulder injury in the first half but finished with five catches for 68 yards, going past Calvin Johnson for 30th place on the NFL's career receiving list with 11,681 yards. UP NEXTBuccaneers: return home to face the Jaguars next Sunday, beginning a stretch of three games in four weeks against AFC South opponents. Falcons: short turnaround before they host first-place New Orleans on Thursday night. Atlanta will be going for its second straight upset of the Saints, having pulled off a 26-9 stunner in the first meeting between the NFC South rivals on Nov. 10. ---Follow Paul Newberry on Twitter at www. twitter. com/pnewberry1963 His work can be found at https://apnews. com---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 21, 2019ORCHARD PARK, N. Y. Buffalo Bills center Mitch Morse expressed a brief sense of satisfaction. He didn't have to spend yet another week addressing the same old questions regarding the offense's shortcomings. For once, Morse could point to actual signs of the Josh Allen-led unit approaching its potential following a breakout four-touchdown and season-best 424-yard outing in a 37-20 win at Miami that has Buffalo (7-3) off to its best 10-game record in 20 years. ''It's just fun putting points up,'' he said. ''It's satisfying. '' Morse, however, is well aware how one week's romp doesn't guarantee another, especially given his familiarity with Von Miller and the Denver Broncos coming to town Sunday. ''It's one game. We're very proud of it,'' said Morse, who spent his first four seasons with the Broncos' AFC West-rival Kansas City Chiefs. ''As quickly as we did well, we could get stagnant. So, for us, it's understanding we are playing a very good defense. '' The Broncos (3-7) have their issues, particularly when it comes to fourth-quarter meltdowns. Denver has now blown four fourth-quarter leads, including last week's 27-23 loss at Minnesota, in which the Broncos became the first team in five years to squander a 20-point lead entering halftime. And yet, the Broncos under first-year coach Vic Fangio are still dangerous enough to have held a lead over all but two opponents, and feature a defense ranked fourth in the NFL in yards allowed, and tied for seventh in points allowed. ''I don't have to convince them they were close. You were all there. It was close and it's been close a lot of times,'' Fangio said, referring to the loss to the Vikings. ''You can see the effort that we're giving on Sundays, so I think (a breakthrough) will happen. '' Denver is in jeopardy of going 3-8 for the second time in three years. Buffalo hasn't had at least eight wins through 11 games since 1996. STARTING TO BILL-IEVEAllen dismissed questions about whether the offense can sustain its success over Miami, with Buffalo entering the most difficult portion of its schedule. ''I definitely don't think it's a one-time thing how we played. We have a good sense of who we are as a team,'' said Allen, who earned AFC offensive player of the week honors. ''I really think we found our identity as an offense. '' He did concede, ''We have to go out and take it. The rest of the schedule, nothing is going to be handed to us. '' Buffalo's seven wins have come against teams entering this week with a combined record of 15-55. The next five opponents are 31-19, and include three division leaders: Dallas (6-4), Baltimore (8-2) and New England (9-1). PRESSURE POINTSMiller has just four sacks, one shy of his career low set in 2015, when he missed six games on suspension and one on injured reserve. In his other eight seasons, he's averaged 13 sacks. One reason is teams are focusing even more on stopping him with fellow pass rusher Bradley Chubb (knee) on IR. The Broncos are getting pressure from other players. Shelby Harris had a career-best three sacks last week, and Derek Wolfe's five sacks are one shy of his career high set in his rookie year, 2002. TORCHED TUBAQB Brandon Allen is Denver's sixth starting quarterback since Peyton Manning retired, and he's handling the pressure of the job just fine. His college career was also spent in a football-crazed town: Fayetteville, Arkansas. That's where, as Allen explained it, ''a couple of rogue fans, I guess'' torched his truck in 2014 because the Razorbacks were losing. A tuba player's car also was burned. ''A tuba player? Must have been playing the tuba really badly,'' Allen said. THE MAN UPSTAIRSBills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll doesn't believe his move from the sideline to call plays from the coaches' booth played a major factor in the win over Miami. Daboll instead credited his players for executing the game plan, which included a hurry-up wrinkle. ''I probably have a broader vision of it, but at the end of the day it's about the players,'' Daboll said. ''I'm happy for those guys. '' TALL TARGETSWith Emmanuel Sanders' trade and Tim Patrick's return from a broken hand, the Broncos feature one of the NFL's tallest receiving trios. Both Patrick and Courtland Sutton are 6-foot-4, as is rookie tight end Noah Fant. Patrick had 77 receiving yards in his return to action last week, while Sutton had 113 yards receiving, 38 yards passing and 10 yards rushing. Fant added 60 yards receiving, giving him 360 on the season, tops in the NFL among rookie tight ends. Buffalo has allowed just two touchdowns passing in its past three, and seven overall. ---- Pro Football Writer Arnie Stapleton contributed to this report. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019ORCHARD PARK, N. Y. Josh Allen threw two touchdowns passing and Shaq Lawson had two of Buffalo's four sacks in a 20-3 win over the Denver Broncos on Sunday that has the Bills off to their best start in 23 years. John Brown made a diving 34-yard touchdown catch, and Cole Beasley scored on an 18-yard reception. Allen finished 15 of 25 for 185 yards and threw his first interception in 172 attempts. Frank Gore had 65 yards rushing to up his total to 15,289 and move ahead of boyhood idol Barry Sanders into third on the NFL career list. The 15-year veteran also increased his total to 19,154 yards from scrimmage to pass Marshall Faulk for fourth on the list. Rookie Ed Oliver and Star Lotulelei had a sack apiece, while cornerback Tre'Davious White snuffed out a potential scoring drive by intercepting Brandon Allen at the Buffalo 8 in the final minute of the first half. Buffalo improved to 8-3, to match its best start since Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly's final season in 1996, while keeping the Bills firmly in position to secure their second playoff berth in three years. The Broncos dropped to 3-8 in Vic Fangio's first season as coach, and for the second time in three years. And it might be time for Fangio to look to the future after quarterback Brandon Allen went 3 of 14 for 4 yards in the second half and finished 10 of 25 for 82 yards passing with an interception. Brandon Allen dropped to 1-2 in three starts after Joe Flacco sustained a season-ending neck injury. And Allen's replacement is already waiting in the wings. Rookie second-round draft pick Drew Lock has spent the past two weeks practicing since being sidelined in August by an injury to his right thumb. Last week, Fangio said he wasn't any closer to targeting a possible return date for Lock, who would remain on IR the rest of the season if he's not activated by Dec. 3. Activating Lock would at least provide some substance to what's become a lost season for a team that was coming off a 27-23 loss at Minnesota in which the Broncos squandered a 20-0 lead. A week after managing a season-best 394 yards against the Vikings, the Broncos managed just 134 yards and nine first downs against the Bills. This was an important win for Buffalo, which now enters the toughest stretch of its season. Starting with a game at Dallas on Thursday, the Bills' next four opponents entered this week with a combined record of 28-12. This come after Buffalo built its 8-3 record by beating many of the NFL's pushovers. The Bills' previous seven wins - including two against Miami - came against teams that entered this week with a combined 15-55 record. Buffalo led from the start after settling for field goals on its first two drives. Stephen Hauschka capped a 17-play, 69-yard drive with a 39-yard field goal to open the scoring. And then he hit a 23-yard chip shot to cap a 12-play, 87-yard drive. Buffalo then broke the game open when Allen capped the opening drive of the third quarter with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Cole Beasley to put the Bills ahead 13-0. TURNOVERAllen threw his first interception in 172 consecutive attempts late in the second quarter, when he sailed a pass over the middle intended for John Brown. He was picked off by safety Justin Simmons. It was Allen's first interception since the third quarter of a 14-7 win at Tennessee in Week 5. And it was also Buffalo's first turnover in three-plus games. The Bills had never gone four straight without a turnover. SACK MASTERBroncos linebacker Von Miller picked up his sixth sack of the season, and 104th of his career, by bringing down Allen for a 5-yard loss in the first half. Allen became the 51st player sacked by Miller. INJURIES:Broncos: Linebacker Josey Jewell hurt his ankle. Cornerback Duke Dawson did not return after being evaluated for a concussion. Bills: C Mitch Morse did not return after hurting a finger on his left hand. Receiver Robert Foster did not return after hurting his hamstring following a 24-yard catch on the opening drive of the third quarter. UP NEXTBroncos: Host Los Angeles Chargers on Dec. 1. Bills: At Dallas for Thanksgiving Day matchup. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 21, 2019CINCINNATI Andy Dalton could barely protect himself as the Steelers poured through the line, sacking him eight times at Heinz Field in September - one of the quarterback’s worst moments in a nine-year career. Now it’s rookie Ryan Finley’s turn to feel the heat. The winless Bengals will see how their fourth-round pick fares against the Steelers’ hard-charging defense Sunday at Paul Brown Stadium, where thousands of Pittsburgh fans are expected to make it a challenging atmosphere for the home team. The psychological bruises from that 27-3 drubbing on a Monday night two months ago are still fresh. “As the game went, we were throwing the ball a lot and they were just teeing off,” first-year coach Zac Taylor said. “It turned into a bit of a horror show there and we’ve got to learn from that. ”Both Ohio River rivals are trying to get beyond a little horror. The Steelers (5-5) lost Ben Roethlisberger in the season opener and dropped four of their first five, but stabilized behind fill-in Mason Rudolph and a defense that’s been among the league’s best at getting the ball. The momentum was broken last week in Cleveland with a costly 21-7 loss. Top receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster sustained a concussion and a knee injury. Running back James Connor aggravated an injured shoulder. Rudolph had his helmet ripped off by Cleveland’s Myles Garrett, who then clubbed the quarterback with it, drawing an indefinite suspension. Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey punched and kicked Garrett and got a three-game suspension. It’s quite a challenge for a team that can’t afford to lose this one if it wants to make a playoff run. “We can’t let off the gas pedal at all,” linebacker T. J. Watt said. “We’re learning that this year. ”They’re heading to a place where they’ve had many season-saving moments. And things have never been more miserable at this side of the river. At 0-10, the Bengals have matched the worst start in their history and the longest losing streak overall - only the third to drop 10 in a row. In the bigger picture, they’ve lost 12 straight from last season, a club record. They’re starting a rookie quarterback who has completed only 47. 5 percent of his throws and could find himself back on the bench with another bad showing. “It’s a new week to reinvent ourselves,” Finley said. LOPSIDED RIVALRYNo matter how much it’s struggling, Pittsburgh usually get things straightened out against the Bengals. In addition to nine straight wins in the series, the Steelers have taken 12 of 13 and 17 of 20. They’ve won six in a row at Paul Brown Stadium, including an 18-16 victory in a first-round playoff game in the 2015 season when Vontaze Burfict’s hit to Antonio Brown’s head set up the winning field goal. Steelers coach Mike Tomlin is 20-5 all-time against Cincinnati. WHERE’S THE BEEF? The Steelers have one of the NFL’s most experienced offensive lines and have done an excellent job of keeping whoever is at quarterback upright. Pittsburgh has allowed 15 sacks on the season, the second-fewest in the league. The line, however, has struggled to generate much push in the running game. The Steelers are 28th in yards rushing and have had trouble all season converting short-yardage situations. The running game could get some reinforcement if rookie Benny Snell Jr. returns after missing three games because of a knee injury. “There is a certain meat-on-meat or bone-on-bone element of football that you can’t run away from and short yardage is one of them,” Tomlin said. FINLEY’S FATEThe Bengals benched Dalton after an 0-8 start so they could see whether Finley fits in their long-term plans. Taylor has left the door open for a return to Dalton if the rookie continues to struggle. The fourth-round pick is having a tough time in an offense with an undependable line and a group of receivers that lacks a deep threat with A. J. Green and John Ross injured. The Bengals have centered the offense on running back Joe Mixon the past two games, but the passing game has been ineffective all-around. Sometimes in the passing game when we've missed, we haven't been right on a route, we haven’t been great in the protection part, or the throw hasn’t been good,” offensive coordinator Brian Callahan said. “So there???s all these different things where we're just off there. We're kind of going round and round. ”OH! LINEThe Bengals will have a different left side of their offensive line for the rematch. Cordy Glenn is expected back at left tackle after missing 10 games with a concussion and team-imposed suspension. Billy Price has started at left guard for the past five games, replacing rookie Michael Jordan. --- Sports Writer Will Graves in Pittsburgh contributed to this report. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019CINCINNATI Devlin “Duck” Hodges took over for struggling Mason Rudolph and threw a 79-yard touchdown pass Sunday, sparking the depleted Pittsburgh Steelers to a 16-10 victory that kept the Cincinnati Bengals the only winless team in the NFL. Hodges connected with James Washington on the game-turning play in the third quarter, leaving Pittsburgh (6-5) with a quarterback decision as it moves forward without Ben Roethlisberger. The Steelers’ defense has steadied them through the transition, and it had a major impact in Pittsburgh’s 10th straight win over the hapless Bengals (0-11), who set franchise records for worst start and longest losing streak. Tyler Boyd made a catch and was stripped by Devin Bush at the Steelers 8-yard line in the fourth quarter, preserving the lead. Bud Dupree sacked Ryan Finley and forced a fumble that he recovered with 2:38 left, closing it out. What’s left of the Steelers’ offense - hollowed out by injuries and a suspension - struggled in the first half and prompted coach Mike Tomlin to switch from Rudolph to Hodges, who provided an immediate boost. His touchdown pass to Washington gave the Steelers a 10-7 lead and got thousands of Terrible Towels twirling at Paul Brown Stadium. Hodges filled in for one game after Rudolph suffered a concussion and directed a 24-17 win over the Chargers on Oct. 13. Tomlin went back to Rudolph as soon as he was healthy. Now, he’s got a big decision as the Steelers try to stay in the playoff chase. Hodges ran an offense missing three stars after a 21-7 loss to Cleveland that ended with ugliness - Myles Garrett clubbing Rudolph with the QB’s own helmet. Steelers center Maurkice Pouncey served the first of his two-game suspension Sunday for kicking and punching Garrett in the melee. Also, receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster was out with a concussion and running back James Conner had a shoulder injury from the Cleveland game. The Steelers got what they needed out of what was left, with Hodges leading the way. He went 5 of 11 or 118 yards with two sacks. Rookie Benny Snell Jr. returned from a knee injury and ran for 98 yards. If the Bengals were going to end that long losing streak against their Ohio River rival, this was their chance. Instead, they saw another one slip away in the end, just like all the others. The Bengals repeatedly dodged disaster in the first half and led 7-3, only their third halftime lead this season. They fumbled the opening kickoff but recovered. Finley was sacked and fumbled on Cincinnati’s second possession, but Giovani Bernard fell on the ball. Finley later was sacked just in front of the goal line, avoiding a safety. Finley was 12 of 26 for 192 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown pass to Boyd. INJURIESSteelers: CB Artie Burns was out with a knee injury. Bengals: Alex Redmond was expected to start at left guard but hurt his left elbow during pregame warmups and didn’t play. UP NEXTSteelers: Host Cleveland next Sunday. Bengals: Host the New York Jets next Sunday. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 21, 2019CLEVELAND As they walked out of FirstEnergy Stadium into the darkness more than a week ago, the Browns couldn’t celebrate their biggest win in an uneven season as a cloud of uncertainty hung over them. It burst open. They return Sunday a changed team. Myles Garrett’s jaw-dropping, helmet-swinging assault on Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph last week in front of national TV audience has altered everything for the Browns (4-6), who could move deeper into the AFC playoff mix with a win over the Miami Dolphins (2-8), a team that has had its own recent share of turbulence. Garrett won’t play again in 2019 - and it’s not known when he’ll be back in 2020 - after he was suspended indefinitely by the NFL for his attack on Rudolph. The star’s appeal was denied this week, leaving the Browns to move on without their top defensive player and further complicating a season filled with drama and adversity. It’s been one obstacle after the next. “I’ve had a tattoo on my arm since I was probably 18, ‘The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort and convenience, but where he stands in times of challenge and controversy,’” wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. said. “Adversity is a true test of character and we are going through it right now, we’ve been going through it. “We’ve stood firm and we’ve fought and we’ve battled and we’ve come out with scars and scratches. We’ve lost, but the main thing is we fought and we’re finding ways to overcome any kind of adversity So as long as we stick together as a team, I feel very confident in this group that we can go out and get a win this weekend. But it’s never going to be easy. ”The Dolphins have dealing with their own challenges. They’ve played well of late, winning two of three following an 0-7 start. But Miami took some roster hits this week with starting safeties Reshad Jones and safety Bobby McCain going on injured reserve and leading rusher Mark Walton being cut after his arrest on charges he punched his pregnant girlfriend. It’s been a tough swim for the Dolphins. “You try to make the best out of it,” said quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. “There’s a lot of those things that we don’t control as players. We just go out there and play. That’s kind of how we have to approach it. ”FISH STORYNo Browns player is more excited for Sunday’s game than receiver Jarvis Landry, who spent four seasons with the Dolphins before being traded. ???A lot of history,” he said. Landry performed at a Pro Bowl level for the Dolphins, but his personality clashed with coach Adam Gase and the team didn’t meet his demands for a long-term contract. “I don’t really hold onto it,” Landry said. “At the time when it happened, maybe then, just how things were communicated. Now I’m happy to be here. This is one of the games that I knew in two years I’d get a chance to have. I’m happy it’s here. ”GETTING GASHEDThe Dolphins rank next to last in the NFL in rushing defense, which could be a problem against Cleveland’s Nick Chubb, who went over 1,000 yards last week. Miami gave up 168 yards - 114 in the first half - to Buffalo last week. “That’s ridiculous,” said tackle Davon Godchaux. “I take full blame for it, being a captain on the team. I promise you we’ll get it fixed. ”DECIMATED DEFENSEThe Browns could be missing four starters from a defense coming off its best game this season. In addition to Garrett, Cleveland will be without tackle Larry Ogunjobi, who was suspended one game for shoving Rudolph and safety Morgan Burnett, who tore his Achilles tendon against the Steelers. Defensive end Olivier Vernon didn’t practice this week and has missed the past two games with a sprained knee. SACKEDFitzpatrick said he’s partly to blame for being sacked seven times in last week’s loss to Buffalo. He’s only been sacked more than that once in 15 seasons. “Every sack has its own little story,” Fitzpatrick said. “I have to get the ball out better in some of those situations. ”Fitzpatrick, who turns 37 on Sunday, feels good even though he has been sacked 24 times, his highest total since 2012. “Nobody’s going to write a book about my training regimen or my diet. I know that,” joked Fitzpatrick, 5-1 in his career against Cleveland. “But there are just some years for whatever reason you get bumps and bruises and stuff lingers all year long, and then there’s other years where you’re getting hit a bunch but nothing really lingers, and that’s kind of where I’m at right now. ”The Dolphins’ offensive line has allowed 42 sacks, tied for the most in the NFL. The Browns tied a season-high with four sacks last week. DOLPHINS TARGETSDolphins offensive coordinator Chad O’Shea is pleased with how receiver DeVante Parker has blossomed in his fifth season. But O’Shea would like more balance in the receiving group. “We’ve stressed the importance of other players contributing to the pass game as much as DeVante’s contributed,” O’Shea said. “That has been a real positive for us this year, and we’ll continue to use him, but I think it’s important for these other players to have opportunities as well. ”Parker is on pace for career highs in catches, yards receiving and touchdowns. --- Sports Writer Steven Wine in Miami contributed. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019CLEVELAND The distractions didn’t bother the Browns. The Dolphins didn’t get in their way either. Jarvis Landry caught two touchdown passes against his former team and Cleveland won its third straight Sunday, 41-24 over the Miami Dolphins in the Browns’ first game since losing star defensive end Myles Garrett to a season-ending suspension. Landry couldn’t wait to get back at the Dolphins (2-9), who had him for four seasons before they decided not to give him a long-term contract extension and traded him to Cleveland in 2018. He got his revenge, finishing with 10 catches for 148 yards. “It didn’t mean extra, but it was fun,” Landry said, flashing a smile while speaking at his locker alongside teammate Odell Beckham Jr. “It feels great to get a win and to finish the game on a positive with everything that’s been going on. ”Baker Mayfield had 327 yards passing and hit a TD pass to Beckham, and Joe Schobert had two interceptions as the Browns (5-6) continued their climb back into the AFC playoff hunt. The lopsided win capped an emotionally complicated week for the Browns in the aftermath of Garrett being banned by the NFL for pulling off Pittsburgh quarterback Mason Rudolph’s helmet and hitting him over the head with it. That touched off a wild brawl in the final seconds of Cleveland’s 21-7 win over the Steelers on Nov. 14. Garrett’s appeal was denied this week in New York, where he told the league Rudolph used a racial slur, something the league said it didn’t find any evidence of. On Saturday, the league fined Garrett and 32 other players from Pittsburgh and Cleveland for their roles in the ugly melee between the bitter rivals, who will meet against next Sunday at Heinz Field. Browns owner Dee Haslam showed her support for Garrett by wearing a stocking cap on the sideline during pregame warmups bearing his No. 95. The Browns managed to stay focused despite the endless talk revolving around Garrett and their upcoming rematch with the Steelers. “It was only a controversy in the media, not in our locker room,” said defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson, who had two sacks. “Next man up. I was proud of the D-line and proud of the whole team for coming out there and doing what we’re supposed to do. ”With Garrett gone, there was more pressure on Cleveland’s offense to produce, and the unit came through. The Browns scored on four of five possessions inside the red zone. Mayfield completed 24 of 34 passes, but threw his first interception in four weeks. Beckham had six catches for 84 yards, and AFC rushing leader Nick Chubb had 106 yards and scored on a 5-yard run. “When we got our chances we capitalized,” said Mayfield. “We still didn’t play good enough. ”Mayfield feasted on a Miami secondary missing three starters. He threw TD passes to Landry and Beckham in the first quarter, and hooked up with Landry again in the second quarter as the Browns opened a 21-0 lead. Later, Kareem Hunt scored on a 6-yard run for his first touchdown with Cleveland to make it 28-0. The Dolphins helped dig their hole. They were called for three pass interference penalties in the first half to extend Cleveland drives, failed to convert on a faked punt, and finished the first quarter with 7 total yards. “I’ve got to continue to do a better job,” said Fitzpatrick. “Overall we need more consistency and that starts with me. ”Miami quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick finished 21 of 39 yards with two TD passes and two interceptions on his 37th birthday. He threw an 11-yard TD pass to tight end Mike Gesicki, scored on an 8-yard run, and threw a 19-yarder to Allen Hurns to cap the scoring. Earlier this week , Landry said he’d be “lying” if he said he hadn’t circled the matchup with Miami on his calendar. He quickly got back at the Dolphins by hauling in a 7-yard TD pass from Mayfield to cap Cleveland’s opening drive. STEELERS WEEKThe Browns are already turning their attention to the Steelers, who benched Rudolph in Sunday’s win over Cincinnati. Richardson, for one, hopes Rudolph plays. ODDS, ENDSCleveland’s Austin Seibert made two field goals, but missed a 46-yarder. . . . Landry and Beckham scored TDs in the same game as Browns teammates for the first time. They hadn’t done that since Sept. 14, 2013, when they played together at LSU. . . . Landry is the first Browns wide receiver with a touchdown catch in four consecutive games since Kevin Johnson in 2001. INJURIES:Dolphins: Wide receiver Albert Wilson left with rib injury in the third quarter. . . . WR Jakeem Grant went out with an ankle injury following a 25-yard kickoff return. He did not return. He ran back a kick 101 yards last week against Buffalo. . . . CB Ken Crawley left in the second quarter with a shoulder injury, further weakening a thin secondary. Browns: None. GAME PREVIEW
Nov 21, 2019NEW ORLEANS Drew Brees and the Saints were reminded two weeks ago that even the last-place team in the NFC South can take them down. The Panthers (5-5) got the same reminder last week. So Brees could only presume a sense of urgency pervaded Carolina's preparations for Sunday's visit to New Orleans (8-2) in a matchup of the top two teams in the division. ''You could say it's very similar to the position we were in coming off (the previous) week, where you lose one at home and you didn't play your best football obviously, and there is a lot at stake,'' Brees said, relating the Saints' home loss to Atlanta in Week 10 to the Panthers' home loss to the Falcons in Week 11. ''Listen, these are divisional games,'' Brees continued. ''We're fighting to win the division. They are fighting to be in contention as well. This is one of those games. '' When the Saints offense struggled against the Falcons two weeks ago, a prime factor was the ability of Atlanta's defensive front to create pressure. Brees was sacked six times and the Saints never got in the end zone. Now New Orleans faces a Carolina defense that entered this week tied for the NFL lead in sacks with 39, and third in the league in interceptions with 12. Brees suggested that the Panthers' success in those areas stems in large part from linebacker Luke Kuechly. ''They have obviously one of the smartest, best players in the game - Luke Kuechly - and you see how active he is in his communication and leadership on that side of the ball,'' Brees said. ''They're doing a good job of getting pressure on opposing teams and taking the ball away. Again, for us, it becomes about our execution, our attention to detail in regards to the protection. '' The Saints are no slouches on defense, either. Panthers coach Ron Rivera, who was an All-America linebacker at California in the early 1980s before winning a Super Bowl as a player with Chicago Bears, was highly complimentary this week of New Orleans' defensive front. ''A lot of people talk about certain elements of defensive football, but I've always been one that believes it starts up front,'' Rivera said. ''When you feel really good about the way those guys are playing, to me, it just kind of permeates throughout the rest of the unit because they feel that and the impact those guys up front make. '' Rivera listed Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan, who has 9 1/2 sacks this season and also went to Cal, as one of his favorites to watch when he's reviewing video of Saints games. ''They've got a good tandem of outside rushers,'' Rivera said, referring to Jordan and Marcus Davenport. ''They get good push on the inside so guys can't step up, and that's why they've had so much success this year. '' The Saints also rank third against the run, which could prompt the Panthers to lean more on their passing game - one week after quarterback Kyle Allen threw four interceptions against the Falcons. SUPERDOME SUCCESSAllen downplayed the significance of beating the Saints in Week 17 last season at the Superdome in his first NFL start, largely because it was a meaningless game in which coach Sean Payton rested starters in the second half. ''The only thing I can really take from that game is playing in that stadium,'' Allen said. ''But (this year) is different. It's a new team and they run a little bit of a different scheme and they have some different players. And there is a lot more on the line. '' ON THE BRINKA loss to the Saints could be a significant blow to Carolina's waning playoff hopes. The Panthers enter the weekend three games back of the Saints with six games remaining, and 2 1/2 games out of the second wild-card spot. The Panthers have a chance to make up ground on the Saints because they have to play them twice. Panthers safety Tre Boston said ''this is not something that is impossible. But would I say our backs against the wall? I would say yeah. '' STOPPING McCAFFREYThe Saints' top priority on defense will be stopping Christian McCaffrey, first in the league in yards from scrimmage, yards rushing and touchdowns. Sean Payton said simulating for McCaffrey's speed in practice is extremely challenging, although he hopes his defense is prepared for him after practicing against Alvin Kamara, a similar style back, on a fairly regular basis. Payton says McCaffrey is ''playing exceptionally well. You are seeing gains of 30 and 40 yards and his speed gets him into the end zone. '' PROTECTING ALLENThe Panthers' first order of business will be protecting Allen on Sunday. The second-year quarterback was sacked five times last week by the Falcons and threw a career-high four interceptions. The problem for the Panthers is the inexperience at left tackle this season, where they have started rookies Dennis Daley and Greg Little. --- Sports Writer Steve Reed contributed to this report. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019NEW ORLEANS Wil Lutz kicked a 33-yard field goal as time expired, and the New Orleans Saints beat the Carolina Panthers 34-31 on Sunday to take a four-game lead in the NFC South with five games left. Drew Brees completed 30 of 39 passes for 311 yards and three touchdowns, and led New Orleans from its own 14-yard line with 1:51 left to the Carolina 15 with 3 seconds remaining to set up the winning kick, capping a contest filled with late momentum shifts and critical errors - none bigger than Carolina kicker Joey Slye's missed field goal from 28 yards with 2 minutes left. New Orleans scored on the game's opening possession and led until 9:23 remained in the fourth quarter, when D. J. Moore reached up with his right hand to corral a fourth-and-goal pass in the back of the end zone to tie it at 31. Soon after, Panthers safety Eric Reid stuffed Alvin Kamara on a run to the right side on fourth-and-1 from the New Orleans 45. That set up a dramatic sequence in which Carolina coach Ron Rivera successfully challenged officials' decision not to call pass interference on a third-down incomplete pass, setting up a first-and-goal at the 3 with 2:21 to go. Carolina squandered its opportunity, however, after Christian McCaffrey's run was stuffed and Kyle Allen threw incomplete on second down and was sacked on third down by Marcus Davenport, setting up the end of a difficult day for Slye, who'd also missed two extra-point kicks. Michael Thomas had 10 catches for 101 yards and a touchdown for New Orleans (9-2), including receptions of 14 and 24 yards on the game-winning drive. Allen passed for 256 yards and three TDs for Carolina (5-6), which saw its playoff hopes pushed to the brink. McCaffrey had 133 yards and two touchdowns from scrimmage on a balance of runs and receptions. The Saints took a 14-0 lead in the first 10 minutes on Latavius Murray's 26-yard run and Tre'Quan Smith's 13-yard touchdown catch on a play in which Brees froze Carolina's defense with a play-fake to Kamara. New Orleans' second score was set up by a muffed punt that was initially ruled to have been first touched by New Orleans. Saints coach Sean Payton challenged, and replay showed the ball hit Carolina's Rashaan Gaulden first, giving New Orleans the ball on the Panthers' 27, where J. T. Gray had recovered it. Carolina responded with Allen's 51-yard pass to Moore and cut New Orleans' lead to 17-15 at halftime with McCaffery's short touchdown catch as time ran out in the second quarter - but only after an unnecessary roughness penalty by Saints defensive end Cameron Jordan gave the Panthers a first down after Demario Davis' third-down sack. Jordan appeared to be trying to punch the ball from Allen, who had been wrapped up by Davis, but the whistle had blown and Jordan missed the ball, instead appearing to smack his forearm into Allen's head. The Panthers parlayed the first down into a 17-play, 68-yard scoring drive that consumed 6:30. POINT-AFTER FAILURESCarolina got no extra points after its first three TDs. In addition to Slye's two misses, the Panthers attempted to pass for a 2-point conversion after their second TD, but it was broken up. INJURIESPanthers: Defensive tackle Dontari Poe appeared to hurt his left leg in the first half. Guard Greg Van Roten also had an apparent left leg injury in the first half. Reid rolled his left ankle in the third quarter but returned to the game. Saints: Left tackle Terron Armstead left in the first half with an apparent leg injury. The Saints already were without left guard Andrus Peat, who normally slides over to tackle when Armstead is out, so Patrick Omameh subbed in at tackle next to guard Nick Easton, who was filling in at left guard. UP NEXTPanthers: Host Washington on Sunday as they try to snap a three-game skid. Saints: Visit Atlanta on Thursday night with a chance to lock up the NFC South. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 21, 2019EAST RUTHERFORD, N. J. Derek Carr and the Oakland Raiders got their season back on track with a three-game homestand sweep. They're hitting the road again this weekend, traveling to the East Coast to take on Sam Darnold and the rejuvenated New York Jets. ''These little road trips are nothing now,'' Carr said. ''We're flying all the way across to New York and we're like, that's half the flight from what we are used to, and it'll be good for us. '' The Raiders (6-4) are 1-3 on the road this season, having won at Indianapolis but lost at Minnesota, Green Bay and Houston. They also won a ''home'' game in London last month in the middle of a stretch in which they played five straight games away from Oakland. So, Jon Gruden's group has this traveling thing down. ''It's so funny, talking to our guys, we have a good routine of little games we play together, little team bonding things that we do,'' Carr said. ''Some of the guys are like, `Man! We get to go on the road this week! ' because they're excited to bond some more and play some of our little games that we play. ''And that's the makings of a group that gets along and loves being around each other. '' The Raiders' victories over Detroit, the Los Angeles Chargers and Cincinnati marked their first sweep of a three-game homestand since 1980. Oakland's 17-10 win against the winless Bengals last week matched the fewest points it has allowed in the past six seasons. A win Sunday at MetLife Stadium would set up a showdown for first place in the AFC West next week at Kansas City. But first the Raiders have to take care of a Jets squad that has won two in a row and has some newfound confidence after wins over the Giants and Washington. The Jets (3-7) haven't won three straight since Weeks 3-5 of the 2017 season. ''We can't let off of the gas,'' linebacker Jordan Jenkins said. DAZZLING DEBUTSThe Raiders can owe much of their success to the performance of their rookie class, led by first-round running back Josh Jacobs, whose 1,067 yards from scrimmage are the ninth most for a Raiders player through 10 games. Fourth-round defensive end Maxx Crosby is coming off a four-sack game; No. 4 overall pick Clelin Ferrell had 2 1/2 sacks two weeks ago; fourth-round tight end Foster Moreau has four TD catches; and fifth-round receiver Hunter Renfrow has 33 catches and two TDs. The Raiders have the most yards from scrimmage (1,676), TDs (14), yards rushing (937), receptions (73) and sacks (10) from the rookie class, and are the first team since sacks became an official stat in 1982 to get at least 10 TDs and 10 sacks from rookies in the first 10 games of season. ''We try to put more on them every week,'' Gruden said. ''We're not limiting anything. I think that's the key for their development. '' AWESOME ADAMSJets safety Jamal Adams had three sacks against the Redskins and two the previous week against the Giants. His six sacks are already the franchise's single-season record for defensive backs. He needs two to tie Arizona's Adrian Wilson (2005) for the most by a DB in one season in NFL history. Adams has his sights set higher. ''Am I going to beat the record? '' Adams said. ''Yes, I will beat the record. That's something that I will get. '' Adams made the Pro Bowl last year in his second season and could be playing his way to a return appearance and possibly a spot on the All-Pro team. ''I admire him a lot,'' Gruden said. ''I wish I had six of those. '' CARR IN GEARCarr is playing some of his best football of late despite throwing his first interception in four games last week. He's averaging an NFL-best 9. 2 yards per attempt over the past six weeks and is on pace to set career highs in completion percentage (72. 3%), passer rating (105. 2) and yards per attempt (8. 0). Carr will try to reverse a trend of cold-weather struggles this week when temperatures are supposed to be in the 40s. Carr is 2-8 in his career in games that started with the temperature below 50 degrees, with just a 66. 3 passer rating in those 10 games. ''I love it cold,'' Carr said. ''If I could have it 50 degrees in my house, I would. My wife would kill me, but I'd do it. So, I've never really minded the cold or anything like that. '' NOWHERE TO RUNThe Jets are allowing a league-low 79. 1 yards rushing per game after holding Washington to 54 last week. Opponents are also averaging a league-low 2. 98 yards per carry vs. New York. Only one player has rushed for 100 yards against the Jets this season: Dallas' Ezekiel Elliott, who had 105 on 28 carries in Week 6. New York will have a tough task this week in facing Jacobs, who has three 100-yard performances and ranks fourth in the NFL in rushing with 923 yards. ''He's playing about as well as anybody,'' Jets coach Adam Gase said. ''His yards after contact, the amount of missed tackles that have occurred against him, I think he's the best one in the league. '' IMPROVING DEFENSEAfter being picked apart by a slate of star quarterbacks such as Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson, Aaron Rodgers and Kirk Cousins to start the season, the Raiders defense has fared much better the past couple of weeks against some easier competition. Oakland ranked 30th in the NFL, allowing 6. 29 yards per play and a 114. 8 passer rating through the first nine weeks. The Raiders have held Philip Rivers and the Chargers, then Ryan Finley and the Bengals to 4. 52 yards per play the past two weeks, ranking 10th best, and a league-low 47. 9 passer rating in those two games. --- Pro Football Writer Josh Dubow contributed. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019EAST RUTHERFORD, N. J. Jamal Adams and the New York Jets heard all the rowdy Raiders fans during pregame warmups, booing them and acting as if they were in Oakland. Then the Jets silenced them quickly with a dominant home victory. Sam Darnold threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score, leading the Jets past the Raiders 34-3 on Sunday for their first three-game winning streak in over two years. “I’m not going to lie to you, when we came on to the field, we felt disrespected,” Adams said. “We got booed in our own home stadium by the Oakland fans. We came back into this locker room and it was a hell of a talk. ”Adams wouldn’t divulge what was said, but the playmaking safety acknowledged he “sparked it off. ”Whatever was said, it worked. Brian Poole returned an interception 15 yards for a TD and the rest of the defense made things miserable for Derek Carr, who was pulled by coach Jon Gruden with just under two minutes left in the third quarter. The Raiders (6-5) came into a rain-soaked MetLife Stadium on a three-game winning streak with an eye on a possible AFC West first-place showdown at Kansas City next week. Instead, they got outplayed by a suddenly resurgent Jets (4-7) team that pulled away in the second half. “We got our butts kicked,” Carr said. “There’s no other way around that. They got after us from start to finish. Hopefully, it’s an eye opener. ”Darnold was 20 of 29 for 315 yards - the fourth 300-yard game of his career - with TDs to Robby Anderson and Ryan Griffin in another efficient outing that helped New York to its first three-game winning streak since Weeks 3-5 of the 2017 season. The Jets didn’t punt until the 2-minute mark of the third quarter. Coach Adam Gase took Darnold out in the closing minutes and had backup David Fales finish. And all those boisterous Raiders fans? Most were gone by then. “I don’t want to sound very arrogant or too cocky, but I think they came in a little too happy,” Adams said of Raiders fans. “I think they thought it was going to be an easy game. ”New York took a 13-3 lead into halftime and came out quickly in the second half. On the Jets’ third play of the third quarter, Braxton Berrios took a short pass from Darnold on a slant and zipped down the field for 69 yards before being pushed out of bounds at the 1. Darnold found a wide-open Ryan Griffin for a touchdown on the next play. Griffin, signed to a three-year contract extension Saturday night, has a career-high five touchdown catches this season. The Jets’ No. 1-ranked run defense then came up big on Oakland’s first possession of the second half, stuffing Alec Ingold for no gain on fourth-and-1 from the Raiders 39. New York took over and used some razzle-dazzle, Darnold handing off to Bilal Powell, who flipped it to Jamison Crowder - who then tossed it back to the Jets quarterback. Darnold then threw to Anderson, who reached up for a 30-yard gain. Three plays later, Darnold connected with Anderson again for a 1-yard touchdown. On the Raiders’ next possession, Carr’s first-down pass was deflected by Neville Hewitt and landed in Poole’s hands. The Jets cornerback ran it in from 15 yards, giving New York a 34-3 lead. Carr lasted one more series before being pulled for Mike Glennon. Carr finished 15 of 27 for 127 yards with the pick-6. Rookie Josh Jacobs, fourth in the NFL in rushing, was held to 34 on 10 carries. The Jets came in allowing a league-low 79. 1 yards rushing, and gave up 68 to Oakland. “You ever been on a boat that’s sinking? ” Gruden asked. “It’s not happy. It’s not pleasant. It’s adversity. It’s football. You’ve got to respond to adversity. We didn’t do a good enough job as coaches rallying our troops today. ”QUESTIONABLE CALLSTrailing 3-0 after Daniel Carlson’s 48-yard field goal, the Jets appeared to score a touchdown on their opening drive for a team-record fifth straight game. But Darnold’s 8-yard pass to Demaryius Thomas was wiped away by a questionable penalty when officials called Daniel Brown for offensive pass interference after a video review. New York settled for a tying 24-yard field goal by Sam Ficken. The Jets then benefited from what appeared to be another shaky call on their next drive. Darnold was sacked by Maxx Crosby from the 9, but Maurice Hurst was called for roughing the passer; officials ruled he dived on the pile late. Instead of a huge loss of yardage and down, it put the ball at the Raiders 4. Darnold faked the handoff to Le’Veon Bell, then kept the ball, ran up the middle and trucked through D. J. Swearinger for a 4-yard touchdown that gave New York a 10-3 lead early in the second quarter. “I had someone in my way at the goal line,” Darnold said, “and I just did what I could to get into the end zone. ”CARR STALLSCarr fell to 2-9 in his career in games that started with the temperature below 50 degrees. The temperature at kickoff at the Meadowlands was 43 degrees. INJURIESRaiders: Rookie WR Hunter Renfrow injured his ribs in the third quarter and didn’t return. Jets: Rookie RT Chuma Edoga will have an MRI on Monday after he left early in the second quarter with an injured left knee. He was helped off the field without putting any weight on the leg and didn’t return. UP NEXTRaiders: stay on the road to face AFC West-rival Kansas City next Sunday. Jets: take on the Bengals at Cincinnati next Sunday. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 21, 2019PHILADELPHIA Russell Wilson nearly ended up in Philadelphia instead of Nick Foles. Former Eagles coach Andy Reid wanted to select Wilson in the 2012 NFL draft but Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider beat him to it. So Reid took Foles 13 picks later. Both quarterbacks ended up winning Super Bowls for their teams, though Foles did it as Carson Wentz's backup after returning to Philadelphia following two seasons with two other teams. Now Foles is a Philly folk hero playing in Jacksonville. Meanwhile, Wentz and the Eagles (5-5) are struggling on offense heading into a difficult matchup against Wilson and the Seahawks (8-2) on Sunday in Philadelphia. ''Just watching him as a player and his ability to create is something that I really admire,'' Wentz said. ''His athleticism is something I tried to implement in my game a little bit. But at the same time, we're different players. He's way quicker than I am, way faster than I am, but a lot of respect for how he can improvise and make plays. '' Wentz was an MVP candidate the last time the teams played in 2017. A week later, he tore two knee ligaments. Foles stepped in and led the Eagles to their first Super Bowl victory. Wentz hasn't been the same since returning, though he's throwing to one of the league's worst group of wide receivers. ''I don't see any difference in what he is now then what he was before,'' Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said of Wentz. ''I think he's an amazing player. I love his competitiveness, his playmaking ability. You see his power and strength. He doesn't get knocked down easily. He can get out of problems. He causes the second play to happen with his scrambles. Eyes are down the field. He runs well when he needs to. I just think he's a fantastic player. '' DO IT AGAINIn a 27-24 overtime win at previously unbeaten San Francisco before the bye, Seattle's pass rush finally had the kind of impact most expected when Jadeveon Clowney was acquired before the start of the season. Clowney had one of the better games of his career with five tackles, five quarterback hits, one sack, one forced fumble and one touchdown in the victory over the 49ers. But Clowney wasn't alone in causing disruption. Jarran Reed, Quinton Jefferson and even Shaquem Griffin caused issues for San Francisco's pass protection. It was an impressive performance by the group as the Seahawks got five sacks. That could be tough to repeat against Philadelphia's offensive line, though the Eagles could be without the line's best player, right tackle Lane Johnson. THE OTHER ROOKIEThe Eagles passed on DK Metcalf in this year's draft and selected J. J. Arcega-Whiteside in the second round at No. 57. Metcalf went to Seattle seven picks later. Through 10 games, it seems like a big mistake for Philly. Metcalf has 35 catches for 595 yards, 23 first downs and five touchdowns. Arcega-Whiteside has three catches for 43 yards, one first down and no TDs. SAFETY BLANKETTyler Lockett has taken over the role of Seattle's go-to receiver for Wilson, so the bye week fell at the perfect time. Lockett suffered a severe lower leg contusion in the fourth quarter against the 49ers. He had to spent two nights in a Bay Area hospital before being cleared to return to Seattle. The bye gave Lockett extra time to recover and he is expected to play against the Eagles. He has 62 catches and six touchdowns so far. NEW NICKELSeattle could be breaking in a new nickel cornerback with the job likely falling to rookie Ugo Amadi. Seattle released Jamar Taylor earlier this week to clear a roster spot for tight end Ed Dickson. Taylor had been the primary option whenever Seattle added an extra cornerback, but Amadi seems the likely choice to take over the role. He may not get a ton of snaps as Seattle has used its base defense a surprising amount this season, even in passing situations. Safety Quandre Diggs also has experience playing the nickel spot. DEPLETEDWentz didn't have his top two receivers and leading rusher for the entire game in a 17-10 loss to New England last week and his best blocker left the game early. DeSean Jackson is out for the season, but Alshon Jeffery and Jordan Howard are close to returning. The Eagles need them to provide a boost. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/tag/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019PHILADELPHIA Rashaad Penny stayed patient on the sideline, waited for an opportunity and made the most of it. Penny ran for a career-best 129 yards, including a 58-yard touchdown, Russell Wilson threw one TD pass and the Seattle Seahawks beat the Philadelphia Eagles 17-9 Sunday. A 2018 first-round pick, Penny has 158 fewer carries than Chris Carson, who is closing in on 900 yards this season. ''It's been a big test,'' Penny said about his backup role. ''Just staying poised, waiting my turn and trying to prove I can play but I know I got a great running back in front of me in Chris. '' The Seahawks (9-2) remain undefeated on the road in six games. Missing their top three wide receivers, leading rusher and two Pro Bowl offensive linemen, the Eagles (5-6) couldn't do much on offense and hurt themselves with three turnovers inside Seattle territory and another near midfield. The Eagles didn't have wideouts DeSean Jackson, Alshon Jeffery, Nelson Agholor, running back Jordan Howard and right tackle Lane Johnson from the start. Right guard Brandon Brooks left the game in the first quarter. Rookie first-round pick Andre Dillard made his first career start at right tackle after playing the left side all season and was benched at halftime. ''I thought we had a good week of preparation, guys were focused,'' Eagles coach Doug Pederson said. ''That was no indication of the performance today. '' The Seahawks were without star defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. Philadelphia's defense did its best to keep it close, sacking Wilson six times. But Carson Wentz struggled again and the offense was awful. Wentz was 33 of 45 for 256 yards, one TD, two interceptions and lost two fumbles, including one on a handoff exchange. ''I gotta be better,'' Wentz said. ''No excuses. It starts with me. '' Wilson was 13 of 25 for 200 yards, one TD and one pick. ''I thought we played a great game in a sense that we were able to move the ball extremely well against a really tough defense, one of the top defenses we played this year with all their players, all their schemes and all the different things they do,'' Wilson said. Malik Turner made an excellent over-the-shoulder catch on a perfect toss by Wilson for a 33-yard TD and a 7-3 lead. Carson took the handoff on a sweep to the right, stopped and tossed it back to Wilson, who had Turner open down the middle. Penny broke loose up the middle in the fourth for his longest career run to give the Seahawks a 17-3 lead. The Eagles had a first down at the Seahawks 33 early in the second quarter but Wentz's pass to Dallas Goedert was intercepted by Bradley McDougald. They faced a third-and-3 at the Seattle 38 in the third quarter but Wentz's handoff to Miles Sanders resulted in a fumble recovered by Quinton Jefferson and returned to the Eagles 32. Rodney McLeod picked Wilson's pass on the ensuing series. Goedert lost a fumble at the Seahawks 32 in the fourth. Down 17-3, the Eagles got a break when Wilson fumbled on a handoff exchange and Nate Gerry recovered at the Seahawks 31. But J. J. Arcega-Whiteside couldn't haul in Wentz's pass on fourth-and-2 from the 23. Wentz tossed a 2-yard TD pass to Zach Ertz in the final minute. WINNING WILSONWilson is the first QB in NFL history to start his career with eight straight winning seasons. Wilson has started all 136 games since his rookie season, including 13 in the playoffs. Four-time All-Pro middle linebacker Bobby Wagner also began his career in 2012 and has started 126 games in that span. ''It's important to acknowledge the marvelous consistency that Russell has brought us and Bobby, too,'' Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. ''It's incredibly special to accomplish that. '' ROAD WARRIORSThe Seahawks are 6-0 on the road for the first time in franchise history. The six road wins match the club's single-season best set in 2013. INJURIESSeahawks: Clowney (hip) traveled to Philadelphia but was ruled out 90 minutes before kickoff. . . . DT Jarran Reed (ankle) left in the first half. . . . FB Nick Bellore (quadricep) left in the third quarter. Eagles: Brooks (illness) exited early. . . . Johnson (concussion), Howard (shoulder), Jeffery (ankle), Agholor (knee) and Jackson (abdomen) were inactive. UP NEXTSeahawks: Host the Minnesota Vikings (8-3) on Monday night Dec. 2. GAME PREVIEW
Nov 21, 2019LANDOVER, Md. Tom Brady thought it was ridiculous how many opposing fans there were at the Washington Redskins’ home stadium. Sam Darnold said his road game at Washington almost felt like a home game. The Redskins haven’t had much of a home-field advantage this season, with an infusion of visiting fans and tens of thousands of empty seats each week. At 1-9 and with the 3-6-1 Detroit Lions coming to town, their game Sunday could mark the peak of Redskins fan apathy and set another low in a lost season that’s playing out in embarrassing fashion at FedEx Field. “I'm guaranteeing that it'll be 25% Redskins fans Sunday, 25% Lions fans Sundays and 50% empty seats,” said Kevin Stroop, who has been a Redskins season-ticket holder since 2005. “It'll be a lightly attending friends and family affair, I think. ”Washington has lost nine consecutive home games, and the combination of on-field failures and a subpar game day experience has sunken attendance for a once-proud franchise with three long-ago Super Bowl titles. After the team conceded the end of a “sellout streak” in 2018, the average announced attendance in five home games so far this season is 67,364 in a stadium that seats just under 82,000. Cornerback Josh Norman early this season said of “fair weather” fans, “When things turn around, don't come back on the ship. ” Upon firing coach Jay Gruden after an 0-5 start, team president Bruce Allen was asked about the hordes of New England Patriots fans invading and responded: “I'm sure many of our fans put their tickets on the second (sic) market and made some money on it selling it to people from the Northeast. All we can do is try to improve our product. ”That product hasn’t improved. Washington is 1-4 under interim coach Bill Callahan, and even excitement about rookie quarterback Dwayne Haskins and some young offensive playmakers is muted by two decades of struggles since Dan Snyder bought the team and almost all bad years since Allen started running it. “You go to the stadium and the chants are either for the other team or 'Sell the team,’” said Eileen Williams, a five-year season-ticket holder. “Nobody cares anymore. ”Williams and Stroop are planning to attend the Lions-Redskins game Sunday, but each is on the fence about renewing for another season. Williams doesn’t want to waste the money she has poured into tickets and parking, while Stroop promised his family they’d all go to this game after selling his two seats to the home opener against the Dallas Cowboys in September. “It's kind of the culmination of things,” Stroop said of growing fan unrest. “Quite frankly, you saw the same thing with the Baltimore Orioles in the last 10 years, 15 years. Every year, you see a few more (empty seats), a few more, a few more and then what happens is you go to a game like I went to last year the last game of the year with the Philadelphia Eagles in town and it was 85% Eagles fans, and it was like, 'Who wants to be part of that? '”Stroop, 41 of Crofton, Maryland, knows now he could’ve waited and bought the same club-level seats for half of what he paid, and that’s not an exaggeration. StubHub and VividSeats have tickets available for around $10, with fees included, to witness what still qualifies as an NFL game. Williams has been to four of five Redskins home games so far this season but said she was disappointed when she realized they were back again Sunday. Her old tailgating crew of 12 has shrunk to three with so many canceling their season tickets, and the game day experience is to blame if the 37-year-old from Ashburn, Virginia, gives them up before 2020. “It's one thing if you have a fun experience,” Williams said. “But from getting your ticket scanned to parking to getting into the stadium to trying to get a beer - I have a friend that two games ago tried to get chicken tenders for her kid and it was over half an hour - that whole part, if that was the way it used to be four or five years ago, that would make it all a little bit better. ”It’s not any easier inside the Redskins locker room as players endure the pain of a season that has gone off the rails. “It’s tough,” veteran running back Chris Thompson said. “Guys have been doing the best that they possibly can in this situation. We've been just having our talks internally about everything that's going on. Obviously we are not of proud of what we've done out there. ”LOSING LIONSThe Lions have lost three consecutive games for the third time in Matt Patricia’s 26-game career as an NFL head coach. They are mired in the worst seven-game stretch of Patricia’s tenure with only one win - a 31-26 victory over the New York Giants - during the slump that followed a 2-0-1 start. “Certainly, always looking for better ways to coach,” Patricia said. “That has to be my job, and that’s what I’m always trying to figure out every single week. ”QB Matthew Stafford is expected to miss his third consecutive game with a back injury, which would mean another start for backup Jeff Driskel. NICHOLSON STILL INWashington safety Montae Nicholson is expected to play his second game since an incident involving a 21-year-old woman dying of a drug overdose after he and a friend dropped her off at the hospital. Nicholson played in a 34-17 loss to the New York Jets last week, has continued to practice and refused interview requests. Fellow safety Landon Collins said players don’t talk about Nicholson’s situation and are letting him handle it. “My understanding is that Montae is cooperating with the local authorities,” Callahan said Wednesday. “Right now, he is on the active roster and is scheduled to play. ”BY THE NUMBERSDetroit ranks 30th in the NFL in defense, giving up 412. 8 yards per game, and against the pass and on third down. The Lions give up 27-plus points per game, ranking 27th, and are 28th in the red zone defensively and 24th against the run. “Numbers don’t lie,” Detroit cornerback Justin Coleman said. “But the numbers don’t tell the full story of what this team is capable of defensively. ”--- Sports Writer Larry Lage in Allen Park, Michigan, contributed. ---Follow Sports Writer Stephen Whyno on Twitter at https://twitter. com/SWhyno---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019LANDOVER, Md. Dwayne Haskins picked up his first NFL victory but inexplicably didn’t take the final snap in victory formation. Haskins was celebrating the Washington Redskins’ 19-16 comeback win over the Detroit Lions by taking a selfie with a fan who was in the first row. The only problem: The game wasn’t quite over, and backup Case Keenum went on the field to kneel down and run out the clock in Washington’s second win of the season. “I was so hype I think I broke a water bottle,” Haskins said. “I look up and we were in victory (formation) and said, ‘Oh, I thought the game was over with already. ??? But I'll get it next time. ”The rookie quarterback made his share of mistakes on the field - and forgetting to get back on the field - during an ugly game against the Lions, but he was there when the Redskins needed him most. Haskins was able to brush off a wrist injury that contributed to some overthrows and the bad look of missing the final play in large part because he guided Washington into field-goal range to finally get in the win column. “Closer - it’s what I do,” Haskins said. The 15th overall draft pick was 13 of 29 for 156 yards and an interception and could approach it like all’s well that ends well after Dustin Hopkins connected on a 39-yard field goal with 16 seconds left and the Redskins snapped a four-game skid and won their first game at home in 13 months. Haskins scrambled for 11 yards and completed passes of 5 yards to Kelvin Harmon and 17 to Terry McLaurin to set up Hopkins’ go-ahead field goal. Cornerback Fabian Moreau’s interception of Jeff Driskel - the third thrown by the Lions quarterback - got the Redskins (2-9) the ball back with 2 seconds left and set in motion the weird ending that confused even interim coach Bill Callahan. “We were looking for him,” Callahan said. “I think he thought the game was over. I think he thought it was over. I'll have to find out a little bit more. ”Haskins drew criticism for overthrowing McLaurin and other wide-open receivers, and Washington had to settle for a field goal each time. He said his right wrist was pretty banged up, but responded “I’m good” when asked to elaborate. The Lions (3-7-1) lost their fourth in a row. “I absolutely hate losing,” Detroit coach Matt Patricia said. “I can't stand it. ”DRISKEL STRUGGLESIn his third start since taking over for injured Lions starter Matthew Stafford, Driskel was picked off twice by Moreau and once by Quinton Dunbar. The interception by Dunbar in the final minute hurt the most because it gave Haskins and the Redskins the ball back to win it in regulation. “We turned the ball over,” said Driskel, who was 20 of 33 for 207 yards, a touchdown and the three interceptions. “It really is frustrating, and you got to go in that locker room and take accountability and that's what I'll do. Those are on me. ”SIMS SHINESUndrafted rookie Steven Sims muffed the catch on his kickoff return early in the second quarter. Then he took advantage of the Lions’ blown coverage to go 91 yards for a touchdown. “I tried to catch the ball while I’m running forward so I hit it full speed,” Sims said. “I kind of was ahead of the ball a little bit. It hit off my shoulder. I knew once I picked the ball up, they were going to be in my face, so I had to go. ”It was Washington’s first kick return touchdown since 2015 and another bright spot in a lost season because Sims has shown he can be a difference-maker on offense and special teams. NORMAN BENCHEDRedskins cornerback Josh Norman was in uniform but only saw the field on special teams. After multiple reports Sunday morning that he’d be inactive, it was a bit of surprise Norman played at all. Callahan said he met with defensive coordinator Greg Manusky, secondary coach Ray Horton and Norman on Thursday when the decision was made to demote him. Callahan said it was Norman’s choice to be in uniform even though the 31-year-old was only set to play if another injury occurred. “Where you are today isn’t the determining factor of where you’ll be tomorrow,” Norman tweeted before the game. “But Everyday is its own starting point to create a dynasty that’ll last when you’re gone. ”Norman has drawn his share of criticism during a rough season, his fourth since signing a $75 million, five-year deal with Washington. Manusky said he “couldn’t tell you why” Norman has struggled. “I think from our situation, we're putting him in situations to make some plays, and we're just not making the plays,” Manusky said this week. INJURIESLions: DT Damon Harrison was injured late in the fourth quarter. . . . WR Marvin Hall left early in the fourth with a foot injury. Redskins: LB Ryan Kerrigan left with a concussion in the fourth quarter. . . . WR Paul Richardson was ruled out at halftime with a hamstring strain. Richardson missed the Jets game last week with a hamstring injury. UP NEXTLions: Host the Chicago Bears on Thanksgiving. Redskins: Visit the Carolina Panthers next Sunday. ---Follow Sports Writer Stephen Whyno on Twitter at https://twitter. com/SWhyno---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 21, 2019LAKE FOREST, Ill. The Chicago Bears are searching for answers in a season that began with such promise coming off an NFC North championship. New York Giants right tackle Mike Remmers isn't quite ready to write them off. ''They could flip a switch at any moment and turn it around,'' he said. ''They have more than enough talent over there. With five losses in six games and their postseason hopes all but extinguished, the Bears (4-6) will try to start salvaging something when they host the struggling Giants (2-8) on Sunday. Chicago has fallen out of contention after winning the NFC North at 12-4. They were banking on quarterback Mitchell Trubisky to make another jump coming off a Pro Bowl selection and an offense that showed some creativity to click in a major way in coach Matt Nagy's second year. Neither has happened. And last week's 17-7 loss to the Rams in Los Angeles was particularly bad. Not only did an offense that ranks among the league's worst stall again, Trubisky sat out the final drive because of a right hip pointer. And the Bears wasted another solid effort by a defense that still is one of the NFL's best, even if it's banged up and more vulnerable. ''It hasn't gone the way we wanted it to go,'' receiver Allen Robinson said. ''I think that's most of the frustration. We know that we have good players. We know the kind of ability that everybody has. It's pretty much the same players that we had last year. Seeing some of the success that we've had - even this season - it's tough to not be consistent. '' The Giants dropped six in a row prior to their bye last week and are on the verge of clinching their third straight losing season. They're 7-19 in two years under Pat Shurmur, and the coach and general manager Dave Gettleman could be on shaky ground. ON THE MENDTrubisky said this week his hip was improving and he sounded confident he would be ready to play. He was hurt taking a knee from the Rams' Michael Brockers as Troy Hill sacked him near the end of the first half, got treatment at the break and led an 80-yard touchdown drive early in the third quarter. But his hip tightened and the offense sputtered. Nagy turned to Chase Daniel for the final drive and would go with the veteran if Trubisky is unavailable. The hip problem is just the latest blow in a rough season for the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 draft. He missed the loss to Oakland in London last month because of a left shoulder injury that knocked him out of the win over Minnesota the previous week. His completion percentage, yards per game and rating are all lower than last season. And after throwing 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions a year ago, he has nine and four in nine games. Daniel, who has five starts in 10 seasons, passed for 285 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in an overtime loss at the Giants last season. He also got sacked five times in that game, with Trubisky sidelined by a shoulder injury. SLUMPING BARKLEYNo one needed the bye week more than Giants running back Saquon Barkley. In four games since returning from a high right ankle sprain, he has gained 72, 64, 28 and 1 yard rushing. The numbers have gone down and the 1-yard performance came on 13 carries against the Jets on Nov. 10. Barkley started the season with 120 yards against Dallas and 107 against Buffalo. ON POINTOnly three teams have allowed fewer points than the Bears (174). But when it comes to scoring, the Bears are near the bottom of the NFL. Chicago ranks 28th in total points (169) and points per game (16. 9) and 27th in touchdowns (19). BIG PLAYSThe Giants are having problems on defense for the second straight year. They have given up 289 points in 10 games, fourth worst in the league. Turnovers and big plays have hurt. The Giants have 24 turnovers - second highest in the NFL - including a league-worst 14 fumbles lost. The defense has allowed 41 pass plays of 20 yards or more, including a league-high 12 of 40 or more. Don't be surprised if cornerback Sam Beal, who missed his first season and a half with injuries, gets some of first-round pick DeAndre Baker's playing time. Rookie Julian Love may also see time in the nickel and at safety. Cornerback Janoris Jenkins is coming off a concussion as well. FOR KICKSChicago kicker Eddy Pineiro is struggling in a big way. He has missed three straight field goals and four of his past seven after making 9 of his first 10. Pineiro was wide on both attempts - 48 and 47 yards last week. He also missed two, including a 41-yarder as time expired, in the loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Oct. 27. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019CHICAGO Khalil Mack set up a touchdown with a strip-sack, Allen Robinson had a season-high 131 yards receiving and the Chicago Bears beat the struggling New York Giants 19-14 on Sunday. Trying to salvage something from a disappointing season, the Bears (5-6) bounced back from a loss to the Los Angeles Rams to win for the second time in three games. The Giants (2-9) dropped their seventh straight and clinched their third losing season in a row. Mack broke through in the third quarter for just his second sack in seven games. Held without a tackle at Los Angeles, the three-time All-Pro nailed Jones deep in New York territory, and Chicago's Nick Williams recovered at the 3. That led to a 2-yard touchdown run by quarterback Mitchell Trubisky to make it 19-7. New York cut the lead to five with 4:10 left in the game when Golden Tate hauled in a 23-yard pass on fourth-and-18. The Bears then went three-and-out before Pat O'Donnell pinned the Giants at the 6 with a 61-yard punt, and Chicago hung on from there. Trubisky threw for a season-high 278 yards, including a touchdown to Robinson, and two interceptions after missing the final drive the previous week because of a right hip pointer. Robinson had six catches, and the defending NFC North champions gave their frustrated fans something to cheer. Jones was 21 of 36 for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Saquon Barkley ran for 59 yards after rushing for 72, 64, 28 and 1 in his first four games back from a high right ankle sprain. Aldrick Rosas missed two field goals, and New York fell to 7-20 in two seasons under coach Pat Shurmur. The Bears took a 10-7 lead early in the third when Trubisky hit Robinson down the middle for a 32-yard TD after New York's Janoris Jenkins got flagged for holding on third down to keep the drive going. Robinson also caught a 49-yard strike with Chicago deep in its territory to help set up a 24-yard field goal by Eddy Pineiro midway through the third, making it 13-7. Mack then nailed Jones from behind for a strip-sack that Nick Williams recovered at the New York 3, and Trubisky plowed in to make it 19-7. A 2-point conversion pass to Taylor Gabriel got wiped out by a penalty against Robinson away from the ball. Another penalty by Chicago as Pineiro missed an extra point led to a 48-yard attempt by him that failed. INJURIESGiants: The Giants were without TEs Evan Engram (foot) and Rhett Ellison (concussion). . . . S Jabrill Peppers (hip) got banged up in the first half. Bears: S Sherrick McManis (groin) left in the second quarter after he was hurt getting blocked on Peppers' 40-yard punt return. . . . RT Bobby Massie (ankle) was hurt in the third quarter. GAME PREVIEW
Nov 21, 2019NASHVILLE, Tenn. Tennessee defensive tackle Jurrell Casey has been in this spot with the Titans more times than he wants to count. The NFL season's getting late, and the Titans find themselves in the playoff hunt despite a 2-4 start. Four of the final six games are inside the AFC South starting Sunday against Jacksonville, giving the Titans (5-5) another chance to add to their lone playoff berth in the past decade. ''We always find ourselves in a position where we can take control of our own destiny,'' Casey said. ''Now we just got to make sure we do it. I think past years we let time slip after time and we have to make sure we take advantage of this season. '' Casey is among four Titans who used last week's bye to heal injuries that kept them out of a 35-32 win over Kansas City on Nov. 10. They also have won four of the past five against Jacksonville. But the Jaguars (4-6) beat Tennessee 20-7 on Sept. 19 and are poised for their first sweep of the Titans since 2005. It would be just the third all-time in a divisional rivalry that stretches back to Jacksonville's inaugural season in 1995. The Jaguars have lost two straight and four of six coming off a 33-13 loss in Indianapolis that featured Nick Foles' first game since breaking his left collarbone in the season opener. They need a win if only to dispel any memories of last season when they went 5-11, which included a seven-game skid. ''Pressing can lead to worse things,'' Jaguars defensive tackle Abry Jones said. ''We just got to make sure no one's going out there panicking and feeling like they have to do things they don't have to do. '' DIFFERENT QBThe Jaguars piled up nine sacks of Marcus Mariota in Week 3, but the Titans benched him for Ryan Tannehill after an Oct. 13 loss in Denver. Tannehill is 3-1 as a starter and has helped the Titans score at least 20 points in each of his starts. Better yet, the Titans have scored touchdowns on their last 10 trips inside an opponent's 20 and lead the NFL by scoring TDs in that area 72% of their trips. SAY WHAT? Foles got ripped twice this week for how he responded to questions about Jacksonville's situation. He raised eyebrows after a lopsided loss at Indianapolis by saying ''we're blessed to play a game'' and urging teammates to go home and spend time with their families. He caught more grief Wednesday for saying ''we're figuring out who we are as a culture. '' ''We're going through our journey right now,'' Foles said, drawing fans' ire on social media because it's Week 12. ''Everyone wants you just to arrive at the end goal, but that's not how this thing works. We're in that tough time. This is really where you get tested and this is where you can either go this way or that way. Which one do you want to choose? ''CHASING KEARSEThe Jaguars rank fifth in the NFL with 33 sacks, led by defensive end Josh Allen with eight. He had two sacks the last time these teams met, and Allen is trying to chase down the NFL rookie record of 14 1/2 set by Jevon Kearse with Tennessee in 1999. The Titans, tied for 12th with 27, are led by second-year linebacker Harold Landry III with seven. Landry has 11 1/2 career sacks over his first 25 games. Since 1999, only Kearse (17 1/2) has had more in that span for Tennessee. FOURNETTE'S FRUSTRATIONLeonard Fournette is growing increasingly frustrated by the week. That's because Jacksonville's workhorse running back is barely touching the ball. The third-year pro was leading the AFC in rushing just a few weeks ago - and even campaigning for Pro Bowl votes - but he's dropped significantly after running for 40 and 23 yards, respectively, in back-to-back loses to Houston and Indianapolis. He carried just eight times against the Colts, and his angst was evident late in the game and in the locker room. ''I know Leonard's frustrated,'' coach Doug Marrone said. ''He wants to make plays and help us win the game. '' STOP HENRYThe Jaguars gave up 264 yards rushing last week to the Colts, dropping them to 29th in the league against the run, allowing 134. 6 yards a game. Now they must slow down Derrick Henry who had a record-setting game with a career-best 238 yards the last time Jacksonville played in Nashville. Henry is coming off his best game this season, running for 188 yards against the Chiefs. ---Follow Teresa M. GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019NASHVILLE, Tenn. The Tennessee Titans scored touchdowns so fast and furiously quarterback Ryan Tannehill needed a little help recalling the exact order. Call it a very fun blur of points. The Titans scored four touchdowns over six offensive plays in the third quarter, routing the Jacksonville Jaguars 42-20 Sunday for their second straight victory to keep themselves firmly in the AFC playoff hunt. ''That was a crazy stretch,'' Tannehill said. Tannehill ran for two TDs and threw two TDs to improve to 4-1 as Tennessee's starter. Derrick Henry became the first player in the NFL since 2006 to score two TDs within 20 seconds, and rookie receiver A. J. Brown capped the scoring spurt with a 65-yard TD catch that made it 35-3 with 6:57 left in the third quarter. ''I don't think I've been a part of something that quick,'' Henry said. ''But that's just credit to everybody on offense just being locked in and hopefully we can keep this momentum going and just build off it. '' The Titans (6-5) are tied with Indianapolis and Oakland just outside the AFC's final wild-card spot - their next two opponents with both on the road. Jacksonville (4-7) lost its third straight all inside the AFC South, the past two since Nick Foles returned to the lineup. The Jaguars had nine sacks in beating the Titans 20-7 in September with Marcus Mariota at quarterback for Tennessee. They sacked Tannehill only once, though they forced a pair of fumbles by Tennessee. Ranked 29th in the NFL against the run, the Jaguars gave up 219 yards as the Titans had a 471-369 edge in total offense. Jaguars coach Doug Marrone was left furious and dealing with more questions about his job security. ''Am I embarrassed? '' Marrone said. ''Yes I am that. I'm not speaking for anyone else. You're going to have to tell them. But I promised them that I am going to do a better job, and I'm going to work my butt off to get this thing right. '' Leonard Fournette had a pair of 1-yard TD runs and finished with 97 yards. Tannehill ran for a 21-yard TD, jumping over Jaguars cornerback Tre Herndon at the goal line for a 7-3 halftime lead. The Titans seized control scoring three TDs on consecutive offensive plays in the third with the fourth coming at the end of a three-play drive:- Offensive lineman Dennis Kelly caught a 1-yard TD pass from Tannehill. - After a three-and-out by Jacksonville, Henry went through the middle to the left sideline stiff-arming Jaguars safety Jarrod Wilson to the ground on his way to a 74-yard TD. - Linebacker Daren Bates stripped Michael Walker of the ball on the kickoff, and Henry scored on a 7-yard TD run on the next snap 16 seconds after his first TD. - Tannehill found Brown around the Titans 48, and the rookie ran to the end zone for a 35-3 lead with 6:57 left in the third. ''It was like we played one half of good football,'' Jaguars defensive lineman Calais Campbell said. Tannehill was 14 of 18 for 259 yards passing, Henry finished with 19 carries for 159 yards and Brown had four catches for 135 yards. The Jaguars recovered an onside kick after Fournette's second TD but touched the ball before it went 10 yards. Tannehill ran for his second TD four plays later. EXCLUSIVE COMPANYWith his two TDs 16 seconds apart, Henry was the first to score that quickly since Hall of Famer LaDainian Tomlinson scored two TDs in 15 seconds of Week 10 in 2006. Henry also joined Napoleon Kaufman (1997-99) and Robert Smith (1997-2000) as the only players in NFL history with a rushing TD of at least 70 yards in three consecutive seasons. Henry had a 99-yarder against the Jaguars last season, and he said his 74-yarder was similar going down the opposite sideline to the other end zone. ''I was trying to keep him away as I kept trying to stay inbounds and keep moving down the field,'' Henry said. ''You know it worked again. '' INJURIESJaguars safety Ronnie Harrison suffered a concussion late in the first quarter and did not return. Herndon was evaluated for a concussion after trying to tackle Tannehill. He was cleared and returned. Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan went down after taking an apparent shot in the ribs at the end of the first quarter. He missed the next play where Jaguars defensive end Yannick Ngakoue beat Lewan's replacement to sack Tannehill and strip him of the ball to start the second quarter. Titans cornerback LeShaun Sims hurt an ankle. UP NEXTJaguars: Host Tampa Bay on Sunday. Titans: Visit Indianapolis on Sunday. ---Follow Teresa M. GAME PREVIEW
Nov 21, 2019FOXBOROUGH, Mass. As a young football fan growing up in California, it didn’t take Tom Brady long to dislike the Dallas Cowboys. “I???ve really not liked the Cowboys since coming out of the womb as a Niner fan,” Brady joked this week. “They’ve got a lot of great players in their history. Guys that I just, as a Niner fan, you’d play the Cowboys and every time they’d hand off to Emmitt Smith would be a 5-yard gain and you would pull you hair out. ”It’s been more than 20 years since Dallas’ trio of Smith, quarterback Troy Aikman and receiver Michael Irvin helped propel the Cowboys to their most recent Super Bowl win. And since he entered the league in 2000 Brady has taken out his childhood frustrations on them every chance he’s gotten, beating the Cowboys in each of his four meetings against them as the Patriots’ starting quarterback. Dallas is hoping the team it’s bringing to New England on Sunday can change some of that recent history. Thanks largely to the play of quarterback Dak Prescott over their past three games the Cowboys (6-4) enter Week 12 as the NFL’s top-ranked offense, a position they haven’t held at the end of a season in more than 40 years. They’ll face a 9-1 Patriots team being led not by Brady’s arm but by the league’s top-rated defense. It is holding teams to just under 11 points per game to go along with an NFL-best 28 takeaways. “It’s exciting,” Prescott said. “You talk about wanting to win championships. You’ve got to beat the people that have won. ”The Patriots have given up only nine total touchdowns on defense in 2019, four of which came in their 37-20 loss at Baltimore in Week 9. New England has yet to allow a red-zone touchdown at home this season. While the Cowboys don’t have a dual-threat quarterback such as Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson, Prescott is having a career season. He leads the NFL with 322. 1 passing yards per game and has thrown for 1,098 yards over his past three games - the best three-game stretch in franchise history. “That’s who he is,” Dallas running back Ezekiel Elliott said. “That’s the type of player he is, the guy he is, the leader he is and he’s continuing to attack. He hasn’t let up, as we expect from Dak. ”Likewise, the task of trying to contain Prescott is high on the priority list for the Patriots. “They’re at the top of the league for a reason,” cornerback Stephon Gilmore said. “It’s a big challenge. And I’m looking forward to it. ”BENNETT’S BACKDallas defensive lineman Michael Bennett is set to play at New England exactly a month after the Patriots traded him for a conditional late-round draft pick in 2021. The former Texas A&M player has 3˝ sacks in three games with the Cowboys after getting to the quarterback 2˝ times in his only six games with New England. Bennett, who also had stints with Tampa Bay, Seattle and Philadelphia, is one of 11 players in NFL history to have multiple sacks with five franchises. Bennett didn’t have much to say about the prospect of facing New England. When he was traded, he had just returned from a one-game suspension over a “philosophical difference” with defensive line coach Bret Bielema. He also said there wasn’t any extra motivation to get a sack of Brady, and Bennett spoke highly of his former teammate. “It’s never personal in the NFL,” Bennett said. “It’s always business. ”RUNNING RUTThe Cowboys haven’t gone three straight games without at least 100 yards rushing in the same season since drafting Elliott in 2016. Dallas has two straight sub-100 games going into the meeting with the Patriots, who rank 19th in the NFL allowing an average of 97. 3 yards per game. The Cowboys had 50 yards rushing in a loss to Minnesota and 75 in a win over Detroit. “I think you do have to be patient,” Elliott said. “You can’t play outside of your game. You can’t play outside of this scheme, trying to force something. ”STREAK WATCHWith a victory, New England would extend its streak to 17 consecutive seasons with at least 10 wins, which would be an NFL record. The Patriots have won at least 10 games every year since going 9-7 in 2002. WYNN RETURNS? The Patriots’ offensive line could see the return of left tackle Isaiah Wynn to the starting lineup. Wynn played just two regular-season games before going on injured reserve with a foot injury. It was the second straight year he had spent time on IR after a preseason Achilles injury caused the 2018 first-round pick him to miss his entire rookie season. If he returns, he’ll rejoin a line that also previously had to adjust to losing starting center David Andrews in the preseason because of blood clots. The absences have particularly affected the rushing game. The Patriots ranked fifth in the NFL, averaging 127. 3 yards per game last season. It is just 24th in 2019, averaging 91 yards per game. --- Pro Football Writer Schuyler Dixon in Frisco, Texas, contributed to this report. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019FOXBOROUGH, Mass. The Patriots held the Cowboys’ top-ranked offense without a TD for the first time this season, Tom Brady threw a touchdown pass and New England beat Dallas 13-9 on Sunday. It was New England’s 18th straight regular-season victory at home. The Patriots (10-1) have won 10 games in 17 consecutive seasons dating back to 2003 and surpassed the San Francisco 49ers (16 seasons from 1983-98) for the most consecutive years with at least 10 wins. Dallas (6-5) had a chance to take the lead late. But facing fourth-and-11 on its own 25 with 1:50 left, Dak Prescott’s 20-yard completion to Amari Cooper was nullified after an official review. The Patriots, who struggled to move the ball in their win over Philadelphia last week, played without two key receivers after Mohamed Sanu and Phillip Dorsett were ruled out with injuries. Brady made the most of what he had, tossing a first-quarter touchdown pass to rookie N’Keal Harry and completing a 32-yard pass to rookie Jakobi Meyers. Brady finished 17 of 37 for 190 yards. Julian Edelman caught eight passes for 93 yards. Dallas struggled to move the ball for most of the game. Ezekiel Elliott rushed 21 times or 86 yards, but the Cowboys were just 2 of 13 on third down. Prescott finished 19 of 33 for 212 yards and an interception. Cooper was held without a catch for the first time as a member of the Cowboys. Dallas entered the game averaging 444. 6 yards per game on offense and had the league’s best passing attack, averaging 312. 7 yards. But the Cowboys looked pedestrian for most of the first half opposite New England’s top-ranked defense, which came in allowing just 152. 6 passing yards. The Patriots focused on taking away two of Prescott’s favorite targets in Cooper and tight end Jason Witten. Prescott threw in their direction just twice in the opening half, while mostly checking down to short passes to his other receivers. Elliott helped the Cowboys keep the ball moving, but his long gains were limited as New England stacked the box on first and second down. Dallas finally found some traction trailing 13-6 in the fourth quarter when Prescott connected with Randall Cobb for a 59-yard gain to get the Cowboys to the New England 25. The drive stalled on the Patriots 11 and the Cowboys settled for a 29-yard field goal by Brett Maher. New England got help from a special teams play to set up Harry’s TD. Matt Slater blocked Chris Jones’ punt on the Dallas 30, and Nate Ebner recovered on the 12. Two plays later, Brady hit Harry in the front of the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown - the first of Harry’s NFL career. Prescott was intercepted by Stephon Gilmore on Dallas’ ensuring drive. The Patriots took over on the Dallas 29, but quickly went three-and-out. They settled for a 44-yard field goal by Nick Folk that made it 10-0. RECORD WATCHHarry became the 75th player to catch a touchdown pass from Brady, extending an NFL record. Vinny Testaverde was second, with 70 different TD targets. A first-round draft choice from Arizona State, Harry made his debut last week after spending time on injured reserve with an ankle injury. It was the 15th touchdown pass of the season for Brady. That’s a record for a player after his 42nd birthday. WYNN RETURNSNew England left tackle Isaiah Wynn was activated off injured reserve after he suffered a foot injury in Week 2. He struggled, beaten multiple times by Cowboys defensive end Robert Quinn. He was also whistled for a false start. INJURIESDallas: S Jeff Heath was checked out on the sideline after delivering a hit on Meyers in the third quarter. UP NEXTCowboys: Host the Bills on Thanksgiving. Patriots: Visit the Texans next Sunday. ---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 21, 2019SANTA CLARA, Calif. When Green Bay coach Matt LaFleur started preparing to face San Francisco's stellar defense, he sent out a text message trying to get some inside information. ''Hey, would you give me a call? I have a couple of questions about your defense,'' LaFleur said he messaged 49ers coordinator Robert Saleh, his former roommate when the two were graduate assistants at Central Michigan. Saleh predictably didn't give up any secrets, although there should be few heading into Sunday night's game between the Packers (8-2) and 49ers (9-1) considering all the ties between the two coaching staffs. LaFleur considers Saleh one of his best friends, worked under San Francisco coach Kyle Shanahan in Houston, Washington and Cleveland, and has a brother, Mike, on the Niners staff. Shanahan spent a year as offensive coordinator when Packers defensive coordinator Mike Pettine was head coach in Cleveland, but said none of that will matter on Sunday. ''You don't really think about that much,'' he said. ''It's more fun that when you're going to hang out in the offseason or see each other down in Indy; it's a little more fun that night when you won the game so you can mess with the other a little bit more. '' LaFleur got his first NFL job as a quality control assistant in Houston when Shanahan was offensive coordinator after a recommendation from Saleh. He then worked as quarterbacks coach under Shanahan in Washington and Atlanta and has taken many of the lessons he learned during those stints into his first year as a head coach. ''There's so many things that I learned from him,'' he said. ''But I think just his detailed approach that he takes every day. He's a guy that has a great vision for what he wants to get done, how to use players, how to adapt and put people in the right position. A lot of my football philosophy has been shaped by him, so it's hard to sit here and just say one thing that I've learned from him because there's been so much. '' GOOD JIMMY, BAD JIMMYSan Francisco quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo showed off both sides of his game last week against Arizona. He threw two interceptions, giving him 10 on the season. But he also threw for a career-high 424 yards and four touchdowns, including the go-ahead score in the final minute. The ups and downs have been part of Garoppolo's game all season, but he hasn't let the bad plays affect him. Garoppolo is 32 for 35 for 378 yards, two TDs, no interceptions and a 130. 7 passer rating on the drives following his picks. ''That's just part of being a quarterback,'' he said. ''In football, bad things are going to happen at some point. No one's ever going to play a perfect game, so it's just how you react to those things. '' BEWARE OF BOSAPackers quarterback Aaron Rodgers has already seen enough of the Bosa family after the Chargers' Joey Bosa had 1 1/2 sacks against Green Bay earlier this month. Now he has to deal with the younger Bosa brother when he faces San Francisco's stellar rookie Nick, who has seven sacks already. ''That's a really good football family right there,'' Rodgers said. ''They're both super talented guys. Obviously, Nick is just getting going. But he's a force off the edge. '' RUN TO DAYLIGHTThe Niners relied heavily on the running game early this season, averaging 181. 1 yards per game through the first seven contests for the second best mark in the league. That aspect of the offense has gone missing the past three weeks as San Francisco has been held to 74 yards per game and ranks third worst in that span, averaging 2. 88 yards per carry. That has coincided with an injury to tight end George Kittle, who is one of the better blockers in the NFL. ''We're going to have to get better,'' right tackle Mike McGlinchey said. ''We will be better and it's going to start this week against Green Bay. '' ROUGH STRETCHThe game against the Packers begins a grueling three-game stretch for the Niners. San Francisco follows this with two more against teams currently in first place with trips to Baltimore (8-2) and New Orleans (8-2). If the Ravens and Saints don't lose before facing San Francisco, the 49ers will be the first team in the Super Bowl era to play three consecutive games this late in the season against teams with a winning percentage of at least . 800, according to ESPN. STAR VS. STARSome quarterbacks like to challenge 49ers cornerback Richard Sherman in a show of confidence. Rodgers has taken a wiser approach during his career. In the last six meetings between the two stars, Rodgers has thrown only 14 passes Sherman's direction, according to SportRadar, completing seven for 85 yards and one interception. ''He has that ability to lull you to sleep sometimes and still jumps on the ball, has fantastic ball skills,'' Rodgers said. ''He's a great player. I have nothing but respect for his career and what he's accomplished. '' --- Sports Writer Keith Jenkins contributed to this report---More NFL: https://apnews. com/NFL and https://twitter. com/-NFL

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 23, 2019In a flash, the Rockets went from riding an eight-game winning streak to suffering back-to-back losses against a pair of title contenders, results that have once again left some questioning how effective Houston can perform if All-NBA guard James Harden is in any way neutralized. The Rockets, set to host the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday at Toyota Center, were left prone last Wednesday when the Denver Nuggets worked diligently to make someone other than Harden beat them. They succeeded at that gambit. Harden had 37 points and 12 assists Friday against the Clippers, but in the waning moments, Los Angeles forced one of his teammates to take the decisive shot and Russell Westbrook clanked a 3-pointer in a 122-119 loss.Against the elite teams of the NBA, this will become protocol. How the Rockets adjust will come to define their season."The whole season they've been running double teams at me," Harden said. "I've never seen that in an NBA game where you've got really good defenders and other guys just running a person at the top of the key. Y'all let me know when was the last time y'all have seen that." The Mavericks extended their winning streak to four games by completing a 4-0 homestand with a 143-101 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday. It marked a second consecutive 40-plus-point win for Dallas and was another example of the Mavericks' burgeoning momentum."It was a successful homestand," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "We've done some good things but the schedule is going to get a lot more difficult now." Starting with the Rockets, Dallas will in succession face four teams off to strong starts this season, three on the road. The Mavericks haven't played a stretch this difficult yet, and what lies ahead will serve as another measuring stick for a roster that is meshing at an exceptional pace.Forward Luca Doncic is central to Dallas' ascent, averaging 33.3 points, 10.8 rebounds and 11.0 assists during the winning streak to boost his season averages to near triple-double heights. While Doncic playing at this level is mildly surprising, his continued growth was anticipated.Kristaps Porzingis' return from knee surgery has provided the Mavericks the boost to shoot up the Western Conference standings. Porzingis is averaging 18.1 points and 8.9 rebounds through 14 games and has offered the defensive impact that bolstered his two-way reputation."I really love the way he plays both ends, but defensively, he's a great pick-and-roll defender, he's a presence at the rim, he's a great rebounder and great outlet passer," Carlisle said. "Those are parts of his game that get overlooked because of his ability to score." But there is a reason Doncic has been so ballyhooed. His start to this season has been otherworldly, and while Dallas has thrived as a collective, Doncic has settled in as the fulcrum for everything that makes the Mavericks successful. Dallas' development is linked to his."It's special. It's consistent and special and I think he can keep going," Mavericks guard J. J. Barea said. "We need him to keep this going and ... it's going to help us get more wins." --Field Level Media

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 24, 2019The Brooklyn Nets were the winners of the Kyrie Irving and Kevin Durant sweepstakes in July and are in playoff contention despite getting less than expected from Irving and nothing from Durant. On Sunday night, the visiting Nets will get a chance to remind the New York Knicks who they landed and how they're faring without them as the two Big Apple basketball teams clash at Madison Square Garden. The Nets were off Saturday after winning their second straight game Friday night, when they cruised to a 116-97 win over the visiting Sacramento Kings. The Knicks will be completing a back-to-back set at home after falling to the San Antonio Spurs 111-104 on Saturday night. The Nets posted their most lopsided win of the year Friday despite being without Durant -- who is expected to miss the season while recovering from the torn Achilles he suffered while playing for the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals in June -- as well as Irving and shooting guard Caris LeVert. Irving has missed four straight games -- and is expected to miss the next three as well -- due to a right shoulder injury, while LeVert is in the midst of a multi-week absence due to right-thumb surgery."It's hard having Caris and Kyrie out, they're two of our best guys," Nets enter Jarrett Allen said Friday night. "But we know it's our time to step up. We've always had the next-man-up mentality, and we're showing it now." The Nets, who are in seventh place in the Eastern Conference, are also showing a renewed focus on defense. Brooklyn has won three of its last four games and allowed 111 points or fewer in each of the victories after giving up fewer than 111 points just twice in the season's first 11 games."We've done a better job here lately defensively," Nets guard Joe Harris said. "I think a lot of that is in direct line to how we've been offensively as well. When you're able to get stops, things offensively come a lot easier." Nothing seems to come easy this century for the Knicks, who were expected to make a big push for Irving and Durant after clearing salary-cap space with the blockbuster trade of Kristaps Porzingis to the Dallas Mavericks in February. But the Plan B hasn't worked out for New York, which will enter Sunday tied for last in the Eastern Conference with the Atlanta Hawks. The Knicks seemed to be stirring a bit after a rousing 106-103 win at home over Porzingis and the Mavericks on Nov. 14 and then a 123-105 rout of the Cleveland Cavaliers on Monday. But on Saturday the Spurs raced out to a 32-16 first quarter lead and led the Knicks by as many as 28 while snapping an eight-game losing streak, the longest ever endured under 24th-year head coach Gregg Popovich."I don't know how to explain it," Knicks head coach David Fizdale said afterward of the loss. "We were in mud, and they were a desperate team. We got punched in the face." --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019NEW YORK Spencer Dinwiddie scored 30 points in another strong start in place of the injured Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets beat the New York Knicks 103-101 on Sunday for their season-high third straight victory.Irving continues to rest an injured right shoulder, and Dinwiddie is making sure they get by without him, scoring 20 or more points in a career-best five straight games after stepping into the starting lineup. He was 13 of 14 from the foul line, where the Nets had a whopping 27-9 advantage in makes.Jarrett Allen had 18 points and 10 rebounds for the Nets, and Taurean Prince added 14 points, 11 rebounds and five assists. Joe Harris scored 13 points, with four coming after the Knicks had cut it to one with 1:20 remaining.Marcus Morris scored 26 points for the Knicks, who lost their third straight. They played without rookie RJ Barrett. He was scratched after feeling sick before the game. The Nets have ruled out Irving for at least two more games, which would have included his return to Boston on Wednesday. But they have won four of five to even their record at 8-8.The Nets opened a 29-15 lead, but struggled when Dinwiddie and Allen went to the bench and let the Knicks quickly close the gap. It was down to 52-46 by halftime and tied in the third quarter, before Brooklyn pulled away again to open a 10-point lead entering the fourth.New York cut it to one after back-to-back 3s by Morris and another by Wayne Ellington, but Harris scored on a drive and later added a pair of free throws.TIP-INSNets: Coach Kenny Atkinson said Irving wouldn't travel with the team to Cleveland on Monday, but wasn't sure yet about Wednesday to Boston. The Cavaliers and Celtics were Irving's first two NBA homes. ... It was the most points Dinwiddie has scored in 12 games against the Knicks.Knicks: Mitchell Robinson was called for a sixth foul with 4:54 remaining, but David Fizdale challenged the call and it was overturned, allowing Robinson to stay on the floor. Not for long: He then picked up the sixth 42 seconds later and was given a technical foul after saying something to a referee on his way off the floor. ... Morris has scored 20 or more in four straight and six of his last seven games.KNOX'S CHANCEKevin Knox II had five points starting in place of Barrett. He not only hadn't started this season, but his minutes off the bench had been dwindling. He had been limited to 10 or fewer in the last two games, with Fizdale seeking a more consistent defensive effort from the 2018 lottery pick. So he was hoping to make the most of his opportunity Sunday, but picked up his fourth foul less than four minutes into the second half.''Like I say you've got to be ready when your name gets called,'' Knox said. ''My dad used to always tell me growing up: You're an ankle sprain away from that time.'' MORE NOISEThe sound around the Nets has changed - on and off the court - since the recent signing of Iman Shumpert, who began his career with the Knicks, won a title with Cleveland and has done some rap music.''I just see Theo (Pinson), DeAndre (Jordan), the communication is better because he talks a ton and his aggressiveness, he's pushing the other guys,'' Atkinson said. ''And then our music has definitely improved in the locker room. We've taken a step up in our music selection. Obviously, he's pretty sophisticated there.'' GAME PREVIEW
Nov 23, 2019Two losing teams playing winning basketball go head-to-head Sunday night when the Sacramento Kings visit the Washington Wizards. The game pits a Kings' team that has turned around an 0-5 start with a 6-3 run against a Wizards squad that's won three of four after opening 2-7.It also brings together two clubs missing their star point guards, with Sacramento's De'Aaron Fox out with a sprained ankle while Washington's John Wall is unlikely to play this season because of an Achilles injury. That hasn't stopped one of the two -- the Wizards -- from running up some big numbers this season. A big reason: Ex-Kings point guard Isaiah Thomas, who had a string of six straight games with double-figure points snapped in Friday's 125-118 home win over Charlotte. Two nights earlier, Thomas contributed 11 points and six assists to a 138-point explosion against the San Antonio Spurs, one of four times the Wizards have topped 130 already this season."A lot of people have counted me out, especially the last couple of years," Thomas proclaimed to reporters before Friday's game. "But I know what I've been through, I know what my body's been through. I know how good I feel, I know I'm ready and I know given the opportunity, I can play at an All-Star level again. And that's what I'm gonna showcase."I promise you I'm gonna be an All-Star, I'm gonna be an All-NBA basketball player again." The 30-year-old Thomas was closing in on that distinction when he averaged 20.3 points for Sacramento in his third season. He was dealt to Phoenix after that success, and two years later made his first of two All-Star appearances for Boston. The Kings probably would love to have him back, especially with their young star, Fox, out of action. Sacramento has been starting defensive-minded Cory Joseph in his place, and it's not a coincidence that defense has been the key to the Kings' recent roll. Before giving up 116 points in each of their past two games, they'd held five of seven opponents to 101 or fewer, winning four of those contests.Unfortunately, they've managed to put up 100 or fewer points in three of their past four games, a stretch during which high-scoring swingman Bogdan Bogdanovic injured his hip.He didn't play in Friday's 116-97 loss at Brooklyn, but he did warm up before the game and is considered probable to return to face Washington.Buddy Hield noted that the remaining Kings fragmented from team to individuals in their quest to take up the slack for the missing scoring sources in Friday's defeat."We had a rough shooting night because guys forced it," he observed to reporters afterward. "We were just out of whack." The Kings will be making the second stop on their second Eastern swing already this season. They won at New York and Atlanta on a three-game trip earlier. This four-game venture continues Monday at Boston and Wednesday at Philadelphia.Meanwhile, Washington will be attempting to complete a 3-0 homestand that began with the high-scoring wins over the Spurs and Hornets.--Field Level Media

Nov 24, 2019WASHINGTON Harrison Barnes matched his season high with 26 points on 7-of-8 shooting, Bojan Bogdanovic had 21 points and the Sacramento Kings beat the Washington Wizards 113-106 on Sunday night.Buddy Hield added 18 points, including a late 3-pointer that put Sacramento's lead at multiple possessions for good, and Richaun Holmes had 16 points and 10 rebounds. The Kings won for the seventh time in 10 games to improve to 7-8.Bradley Beal led Washington with 20 points, ended his string of 30 or more at a career-best five games. Isaiah Thomas added 17, and Moritz Wagner had 12 points and 11 rebounds. After each team led by as many as seven during a first half that finished tied at 57, The Kings built their lead as large as nine on a 17-8 third-quarter run. Bogdanovic scored eight points in the stretch, including an early 3-pointer, a driving reverse layup and then a free throw that stretched it to 88-79 with 1:41 left in the quarter. The Kings kept the lead at multiple baskets until Thomas' baseline 3-pointer cut it to 100-97 with 4:11 left.Hield immediately answered with a 3-pointer. The Wizards thought they had cut it to two points inside of 2 minutes, only to learn that Thomas' Bryant's apparent putback shortly after Hield's 3 had been overruled for a shot clock violation following video review.TIP INS:Kings: Went 2 of 13 from 3-point range in the first half and finished 11 of 31 . G Cory Joseph (heel) started despite being limited to 23 minutes in Friday's loss at Brooklyn ... Bogdanovic (hamstring tightness) was a game-time decision, having missed Friday with hamstring tightness.Wizards: Beal's 30-point streak was the fourth-longest in franchise history. With another game, he would've tied Bernard King, who scored 30-plus in six straight from Nov. 3 to Nov. 16 of 1990. ... Wagner's double-double was the second of his career. GAME PREVIEW
Nov 23, 2019The Denver Nuggets discovered something good in what was a disappointing outcome a couple of weeks ago. They can play defense.Denver was torched by Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks for 125 points in a home loss on Nov. 12 but has held three of its four opponents since to 95 points or fewer. The only outlier was 114 points scored by host Memphis, but the Grizzlies got many of those points in garbage time as the Nuggets scored 131 themselves. That defense will be put to the test when the Nuggets host the Phoenix Suns on Sunday night. The Suns are coming off a 100-98 win at Minnesota on Saturday afternoon that ended their three-game skid.Phoenix was hit by some injuries during its losing streak. Center Aron Baynes has missed three straight games with a hip injury and guard Ricky Rubio left a loss to Sacramento with back spasms and has missed the last two games, which has put a damper on the Suns' quick and somewhat surprising start to the season.Add to that the 25-game suspension to center DeAndre Ayton and Phoenix has had an uphill battle. But the Suns have persevered."I told our guys, 'Look we had a nice run,'" head coach Monte Williams, referring to the team's terrific start, told the New York Times. "'We've gotten hit in the mouth with injuries. Let's see what we're made of. The buzz has died down, and now we can just focus on getting better.' This is the NBA. Our guys are more than able to do what they need to do to get better." Baynes and Rubio would be two big absences when facing a surging Nuggets team. Denver has won four in a row and is coming off one of its better defensive weeks. The Nuggets held Houston, the top scoring team in the NBA, to 95 points and James Harden to 27 on Wednesday before putting the clamps on Boston in a 96-92 win on Friday night. After a rough couple of games where the defense has been suspect, coach Michael Malone has his team playing hard on that end of the floor, and the results have been positive."Our guys understand that when we defend like this, we can beat anybody in the NBA," Malone said after the 105-95 win over the Rockets. "Just imagine if we continue to defend at this level and the offense picks up." The biggest focus will be stopping guard Devin Booker, who is averaging 26.2 points a game in November and 25.6 overall. He finished an assist shy of a triple-double against the Timberwolves, putting up 35 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists. But Phoenix has other weapons on offense -- five other active players are averaging double figures in scoring through the first 15 games. The Suns will be looking for a measure of revenge against the Nuggets. The teams met in Denver on Oct. 25, with the Nuggets pulling out a one-point win in overtime.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019DENVER Will Barton wasn't happy with his energy in the first half, so he pledged to pick it up in the third quarter. He delivered on his promise and led the Denver Nuggets to their fifth straight victory.Barton scored 12 of his 22 points in a momentum-turning third quarter, Paul Millsap finished with 23 points in Denver's 116-104 victory over the Phoenix Suns on Sunday night.Jamal Murray had 22 points, and Nikola Jokic had just eight points, but grabbed 13 rebounds to help the Nuggets win their ninth in the last 10 games. It took a shutdown second half against a tired team, led by Barton's energy.''I felt like in the first half my energy wasn't there and I wasn't flying around on defense good enough so I told them I'm going to bring it the third quarter,'' Barton said.Denver held Phoenix guard Devin Booker to a season-low 12 points on 5-of-13 shooting. Booker came in averaging 26.2 points in November but showed fatigue in the Suns' fifth game in seven days.''I'm glad we got it out of the way,'' Booker said. ''Two back-to-backs in one week, I haven't heard of that before, but it's what the schedule presented to us.'' Cheick Diallo led Phoenix with a career-high 22 points and Dario Saric had a career-high 17 rebounds to go with 18 points.Booker had just seven points into the fourth quarter, but the Suns led most of the game until the Nuggets rallied. Phoenix was again without center Aron Baynes and guard Ricky Rubio, and the lack of depth showed in the third when the team combined for 7-of-22 shooting. Booker missed all four of his attempts.''Just missing shots,'' Booker said. ''I'm sure I'll be fine and I know getting Ricky and Aron back will help out to that.'' Denver used a 10-2 run late in the third quarter to take its first lead since the first quarter. Barton had 12 points in the period and Millsap seven before picking up his fourth foul.''He was getting offensive rebounds, putbacks, he was locking up,'' center Mason Plumleaid of Barton. ''He changed the game and he told us he was going to.'' The Nuggets led 88-87 early in the fourth, then used a 13-4 run to take a 101-91 lead. Malik Beasley, who had been out of the rotation, hit a 3-pointer with 5:11 remaining to make it 104-93.Booker hit his only 3-pointer of the night to pull Phoenix within eight, but Denver went on a 9-2 run to put it out of reach.TIP-INSSuns: Rubio has missed three of the last four games with back spasms and played only 16 minutes in the other game. ... Baynes has missed four straight games with a right hip flexor strain. ... Elie Okobo scored a season-high 14 points. He had 11 in the first half.Nuggets: Plumlee shook off a headache earlier in the day to score 14 points and Monte Morris added 10 off the bench. ... C Bol Bol was recalled from Windy City of the G League. Bol, the team's first-round pick out of Oregon in June, played four games for the Bulls, averaging 11.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in 16.9 minutes per game.SHORT-TIMERSuns coach Monty Williams played 456 games over 10 NBA seasons, including a short stint with Denver. The Nuggets signed Williams to a free-agent contract on Jan. 23, 1999, and he got into one game for six minutes before being cut 20 days after signing with Denver.''I wasn't here long enough to have a memory,'' Williams said Sunday. ''It wasn't anything worth talking about. I messed my ankle up real bad and tore a couple of ligaments and played on it. Should have been in today's environment; they would have let me sit out the whole year.'' Williams is in the stats book with the Nuggets. He hit one free throw and missed both of his shot attempts.UP NEXTSuns: Host Washington on Wednesday night.Nuggets: Host Washington on Tuesday night.

GAME PREVIEW
Nov 24, 2019Depth is one of several strengths of the Los Angeles Clippers. They'll attempt to use it to their advantage again when they host the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday. While Paul George struggled for much of Friday's contest against Houston, Kawhi Leonard and Lou Williams took over down the stretch, as the Clippers beat the Rockets 122-119 in Los Angeles for their fourth consecutive win. Leonard hit the go-ahead bucket with 15 seconds left for the Clippers, who trailed by five with a minute left before rallying."Guys on this team don't shy away from the moment," said Leonard, who converted 9 of 16 shots from the floor for 24 points. He also collected six rebounds and recorded three steals and three assists. "They want to play their best basketball in the fourth quarter. Everyone is trying to execute and make shots and play great defense." No one executed better than Williams in the second half, when he scored all of his 26 points for the Clippers, who are 10-1 at home for the first time in franchise history. Williams, who also finished with eight assists, missed his initial four field-goal attempts in the first half before connecting on 9 of 12 in the second half. He was 4 of 6 on 3-point attempts."That's what he does," Leonard said of Williams. "He was just being patient with the game tonight. He made the right plays in the first half, and the second half he got some open looks, knocked them down, got into the paint. That's how the game is. It's not perfect. Some nights you're going to score all of your points in the first quarter or the fourth quarter, but you just have to keep being solid. We trust him." George managed just 4-of-15 shooting from the floor and misfired on 7 of 10 3-point attempts to finish with 19 points. Montrezl Harrell scored 18 points and grabbed seven boards off the bench to provide the Clippers another boost. The Clippers' reserves led the league in scoring at 50.9 points per contest through Friday's games. The Pelicans will be playing the second end of back-to-back contests. They had their three-game winning streak snapped in a 128-120 loss in Utah on Saturday.Brandon Ingram, who entered the Utah contest averaging 25.6 points per game and shooting 51.7 percent from the floor, scored 33 points on 12-of-24 shooting to lead New Orleans. Jrue Holiday had 12 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter to go along with four steals, while JJ Redick added 20 points. Lonzo Ball, who played his second game since returning from a groin injury, contributed 13 points in 25 minutes. The Pelicans trailed by 20 at the break before rallying in the second half. They closed the gap to 10 after outscoring Utah 34-24 in the third quarter.Ingram's 3-pointer with 37.9 seconds left cut the deficit to 124-120 before the Jazz clinched the win with free throws.Pelicans forward Derrick Favors (back spasms) missed his fourth consecutive game. He isn't expected to play against the Clippers, either. The Pelicans also played without center Jahlil Okafor (ankle) and guard Josh Hart (ankle), who were sidelined for the sixth straight contest. They could return against Los Angeles.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019CONWAY, S. C. Tulane won two games in Myrtle Beach this week - or, half as many as the Green Wave won all of last season.Teshaun Hightower scored 16 points and hit the go-ahead layup with a minute left, and Tulane rallied past Utah 65-61 on Sunday in the fifth-place game of the Myrtle Beach Invitational.K. J. Lawson added 14 points and Jordan Walker finished with 12 to help the Green Wave (5-1), who trailed by eight points with 4 1/2 minutes left and continued their turnaround under new coach Ron Hunter by closing on a 10-0 run while hitting nine of their final 11 shots to finish the tournament 2-1.''How were we going to handle adversity? In the past it's been a struggle at Tulane,'' said Hunter, who came in from Georgia State. ''Our kids could have folded then. They just kept grinding on the defensive end and I thought defensively we were unbelievable today.'' Timmy Allen and Branden Carlson each scored 14 points for Utah (4-2). Freshman Rylan Jones finished with 11 points and hit a 3-pointer to put the Utes up 61-55 with 4 1/2 minutes left - but they didn't score again.Walker hit two jumpers during the decisive run, including one that tied it at 61 with just over two minutes left. He rimmed out a jumper on the next trip downcourt but Hightower cleaned it up with a left-handed layup that put the Green Wave ahead to stay. The Utes had two chances to tie it in the final minute. Jones' baseline jumper bounced off the rim with about 16 seconds left and his contested jumper from the left wing hit off the front of the rim and went to Hightower with 5.5 seconds left.Christion Thompson iced it with two free throws with 2.0 seconds left.BIG PICTURETulane: The Green Wave - who went 4-27 last season under Mike Dunleavy - will leave the Myrtle Beach area feeling pretty good after beating Middle Tennessee and Utah in their final two games. They got back to doing what they do well, forcing 20 turnovers and turning them into 18 points, to give Hunter his 450th career victory.Utah: This 1-2 finish to this cross-country trip will wind up being one of those tough lessons the young Utes needed to learn before getting into the heart of Pac-12 play. With 12 new players, an adjustment period was certainly expected.''You can try to find these big-picture elements, but to me, at the end of the day, it's about being a little bit crisper on the next possession, to not put yourself in a position where another team's going to go on a run to finish a game like that,'' Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak said. ''There's a lot of chicken we left on the bone, I thought, at different spots.'' GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019CHARLESTON, S. C. UConn needed a pick-me-up after its double overtime loss to No. 18 Xavier on Friday night, perhaps no one more than junior point guard Alterique Gilbert.Huskies coach Danny Hurley said the whole team was down Saturday and especially Gilbert, the target of social media after he lost control of his dribble on UConn's final chance against the Musketeers. So no one was happier than Hurley with Gilbert's steady, solid play in an 80-55 win over Miami on Sunday as the Huskies captured third place at the Charleston Classic.''I just couldn't be prouder of how he led this team,'' Hurley said.Josh Carlton had 16 points while freshman James Bouknight continued to make himself indispensable to the Huskies with 13 points. Christian Vital had 14 points while Brendan Adams had 13. Gilbert led UConn with seven assists and directed his teammates throughout. At one point, Gilbert threw a perfect pass to Akok Akok as he soared high for an alley-oop finish. Hurley was so thrilled with Gilbert he rushed out to bear hug him on the next time out. At the end with 90 seconds and UConn up big, Hurley called time out so Gilbert could hear the cheers of UConn fans as he came off the court.''After that loss, it was Alterique that helped us bounce back,'' Carlton said. The Huskies capped a week that started last Sunday with a win over then-15th-ranked Florida and continued here with two more wins and that oh-so-close defeat to Xavier.''I don't think anyone's had a week like us in college basketball'' this season, Hurley said. The Huskies might have a few more surprises ahead after handily topping the Hurricanes (4-3) in the first meeting between the former Big East Conference rivals in 11 years. The Huskies' youth was on full display, led by Bouknight, the highly regarded freshman who made his debut this week in Charleston after missing his team's first three games with legal problems.Bouknight, the 6-foot-4 guard from Brooklyn, New York, led UConn with 19 points against Xavier and continued his solid play in this one. He made six of seven field goals and added three rebounds, two assists and a steal - all off the bench.Another freshman, 6-9 Akok, had seven boards and six of his team's nine blocked shots.Miami dropped its second straight after an opening win Thursday against Missouri State. The Hurricanes fell to state rival Florida on Friday.Dejan Vasiljevic led Miami with 11 points.''I don't think it's a secret that we're not there'' yet defensively, Miami associate head coach Chris Caputo said.BIG PICTUREMiami: The Hurricanes struggled in the second half of their past two losses. They were outscored 33-13 over the final 15 minutes of the Florida defeat and 62-35 the last 25 minutes against UConn.UConn: The Huskies are returning to the Big East next season and look ready to make an immediate impact with the young talent they're developing. Bouknight, Akok, Brendan Adams, who also had 13 points off the bench, and Jalen Gaffney are underclassmen who are improving. Christian Vital had 14 points for UConn.LARRANAGA PLAYING HURTMiami coach Jim Larranaga dealt with a pulled muscle this week that limited his mobility, including on the bench where he would sit while Caputo filled the role of walking the sidelines, talking to players and officials.CHANGE OF FORTUNEThe arena interview room has large glass windows to the outside where fans can see coaches and players talking to media. Several pounded the glass and cheered as Hurley began speaking. It wasn't that way Friday night after Xavier, Hurley joked, ''I was pretty lonely.'' UP NEXTMiami is off next week and plays at Illinois on Dec. 2.UConn returns home to play Maine on Dec. 1.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25

GAME RECAP
Nov 24, 2019IOWA CITY, Iowa Iowa has proven it can handle low-major teams. The Hawkeyes are about to find out if they're equipped to deal with a month-long stretch featuring nothing but heavyweights.Redshirt freshman CJ Fredrick had a breakout game with a career-high 21 points, hitting all five of his 3s, and Iowa overwhelmed Cal Poly 85-59 on Sunday for its third straight win.''He's a complete player, and as impressed as I am with him, I'm not surprised,'' Iowa coach Fran McCaffery said of Fredrick.Luka Garza had 18 points with nine boards for the Hawkeyes (4-1) in their final tuneup ahead of a stretch featuring significantly tougher opponents.Iowa plays No. 12 Texas Tech on Thursday, either Creighton or San Diego State the following day, Syracuse, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa State and Cincinnati over its next seven games. The Hawkeyes got rolled by DePaul 93-78 at home on Nov. 11, its only matchup against a fellow high major so far.''It should be a great barometer for us,'' McCaffery said of Thursday and Friday's games, which will be played in Las Vegas.Garza opened the second half with short banks shots on back-to-back possessions that gave Iowa a 39-25 lead, its biggest to that point. Cal Poly, which entered play ranked fourth in 3-point percentage at 45.3, hung around with three quick 3s. But Fredrick's fifth consecutive 3-pointer became a 4-point play that made it 55-42 Iowa. The Hawkeyes stretched out their lead at the line, where they shot 18 of 29 and Garza's 3 with 5:15 to go put them up 74-50.Sunday was likely the last time Iowa will have such an easy go of it in the second half though.''We're about as ready as you could be for this (upcoming stretch),'' Iowa's Ryan Kriener said. ''It's really early in the year, and traditionally you don't have this this early in the year.'' Tuukka Jaakkola scored 18 points for Cal Poly (1-5), which was just 3 of 22 on 3s. The Mustangs have dropped three in a row.THE BIG PICTURECal Poly: It was a tough trip to the Midwest for the Mustangs, who lost at Creighton in nearby Omaha, Nebraska, 86-70 on Friday night.Iowa: Senior guard Jordan Bohannon sat out as a precaution due to hip soreness. Bohannon had offseason surgery on that hip, and it's unclear if he'll play the whole season or request a medical redshirt. Bohannon has played in four games so far, averaging seven points and two assists. Jack Nunge also didn't play in the second half after suffering a knee injury late in the first half. McCaffery said Nunge will get an MRI. ''Jordan was pretty sore. We'll see how he does this week,'' McCaffery said.FREDRICK'S TIME?Joe Wieskamp, who scored all 10 of his points in the second half, isn't having the breakout sophomore season many expected quite yet. But if Fredrick can emerge as an option on the wing, the Hawkeyes won't have to be so reliant on Wieskamp. Fredrick, who redshirted last season after being named Kentucky's player of the year as a prep senior, added five assists and a steal, and he was turnover-free. ''It just felt like myself again. I felt like the past couple of games, I was not as aggressive as I usually am,'' said Fredrick, who had just 11 points in his last two outings. ''I cam out here (thinking) if I'm open, I'm going to shoot it.'' THE NUMBERSIowa outrebounded the Mustangs 43-32. ... Cordell Pemsl had 10 points in 15 minutes off the bench for the Hawkeyes. ... Connor McCaffery had seven assists and three steal. ... Iowa was 7 of 16 on 3s.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/tag/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25
