GAME PREVIEW
Feb 14, 2019Louisville figured win No. 18 was in the bag earlier this week when it held a 23-point lead over Duke midway through the second half. One monumental collapse later, the No. 16 Cardinals are in the position of trying to halt a two-game slide when they host Clemson on Saturday in Atlantic Coast Conference play.Louisville coach Chris Mack is hoping there won't be a hangover effect after his team was outscored 35-10 over the final 9:07 to suffer a brutal 71-69 loss to the Blue Devils on Tuesday."I thought we outplayed the best team in the country for a long time, and our team will grow from this," Mack told reporters afterward. "As hard as it is to accept, we're going to grow from it, and there will be better times." The Cardinals (17-8, 8-4) have lost three of their past four games -- all four against ranked opponents -- as they try to rebound against Clemson (15-9, 5-6).Louisville also lost to North Carolina and Florida State during the stretch. But the Duke loss was on a grander scale, and Mack doesn't mind saying it -- he's worried about the meltdown lingering."Sure it's a concern," Mack said. "But I also feel like I have some of the best guys in the country in that locker room. They have great character. ... Just try to grow from it and get better." The Tigers will also be looking to bounce back from a tough loss.Clemson fell to Miami 65-64 on Wednesday when Zach Johnson hit a jumper with 0.4 seconds left to give the Hurricanes the win.The heartbreaking defeat snapped a four-game winning streak and dropped the Tigers below .500 in ACC play."Just a disappointing loss by us," Clemson coach Brad Brownell said afterward.Senior guard Shelton Mitchell scored 15 points against Miami to become the 41st player in program history to reach 1,000 career points. Mitchell has 1,001.Mitchell has 37 points over the last two games after experience a two-game funk in which he had just 14 points on 5-of-14 shooting."I think for the most part, I did a good job of staying confident," Mitchell told reporters. "But it felt good to know all the hard work has paid off." Mitchell is third on the Tigers in scoring with an 11.8 average. Senior guard Marcquise Reed averages a team-best 18.9 points with a team-high 42 steals, while senior forward Elijah Thomas averages 13 points and leads the squad in rebounding (7.8) and blocked shots (52).Sophomore forward Jordan Nwora leads Louisville in scoring (17.8) and rebounding (7.8) after scoring 23 points and grabbing 12 boards in the loss to Duke. Nwora matched his career best of five 3-pointers while notching his 11th 20-point outing of the campaign.Junior forward Dwayne Sutton (11.2) and senior point guard Christen Cunningham (10.2 points, team-best 5.0 assists) also score in double digits for the Cardinals. Cunningham registered a career-best 12 assists in the loss to Duke.Louisville has won five of the seven previous meetings against Clemson, but the Tigers won last season's matchup -- 74-69 in overtime behind Reed's 24 points and five steals.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 16, 2019LOUISVILLE, Ky. Christen Cunningham scored 16 of his 18 points in the second half to rally No. 16 Louisville, which hung on for a 56-55 victory over Clemson on Saturday. The Cardinals (18-8, 9-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) led 56-49 with 17 seconds left after a free throw by Steven Enoch but then nearly lost a third straight in disastrous fashion. Louisville saw a 23-point second-half lead evaporate against No. 2 Duke on Tuesday.A turnover and a held ball in the Tigers end led to a pair of 3-pointers by Marcquise Reed, the latter making it a one-point game with 3 seconds left. Louisville's Jordan Nwora tried to inbound the ball, but Reed got the steal. Nwora redeemed himself by blocking Reed's shot, and John Newman III missed a fade-away at the buzzer.Cunningham hit 5 of 7 shots in the second half to help Louisville come back from a seven-point deficit.Louisville was held to a season-low 19 first-half points thanks to shooting a season-worst 29.6 percent in the half. While Clemson wasn't much better at 37 percent, the Tigers took a four-point lead at the break thanks to a 3-pointer just before the buzzer by Clyde Trapp.Elijah Thomas led the Tigers (15-10, 5-7) with 15 points. Reed had 13 points and 12 rebounds.BIG PICTUREClemson: The Tigers dictated play with their physicality inside and defense. Clemson held the Cardinals to season-low 35.2-percent shooting and held Louisville to just three offensive boards. They could keep it up for a full 40 minutes, but their defense gave them a chance for an upset.Louisville: After losing three of their previous four, the Cardinals looked anything but great on Saturday. The Cardinals' play in the closing seconds was reminiscent of how they wrapped up the Duke game on Tuesday and is something coach Chris Mack needs to address immediately.UP NEXTLouisville travels to Syracuse Wednesday night.Clemson hosts No. 17 Florida State on Tuesday night.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 14, 2019Michigan got blindsided by the last-place team in the Big Ten. The sixth-ranked Wolverines will try to recover from that unexpected blow and keep at least a share of the conference lead on Saturday against No. 24 Maryland in Ann Arbor, Mich.Penn State, which had won only one previous conference game, pulled off a 75-69 upset on Tuesday. The Wolverines (22-3, 11-3 Big Ten) head into the weekend tied for the conference lead with rival Michigan State, with Purdue a half-game back. Maryland (19-6, 10-4) sits in fourth place, just a game out of the top spot.Wolverines coach John Beilein watched the second half of the Penn State game in the locker room. He was ejected at the end of the first half after arguing with officials after he thought the Nittany Lions should have been whistled for an offensive foul.Beilein wasn't stunned by the loss."No, because they're good. Just look at the scores. It's two points here, four points here, two points here," he said of Penn State's conference losses. "They just haven't won games. It's not like they're getting blown out, and all of the sudden they come in and they're a bottom-200 team and they end up coming in and beating us."At this time of the year, teams are going to lose. You need to learn from it," Beilein added. "If there's things that happen in this game that help us beat Maryland on Saturday, I'm all in. That's the way you need to look at it." Point guard Zavier Simpson was uncharacteristically sloppy with the ball, committing six turnovers. The Wolverines were also out-rebounded 35-25.Beilein felt his team lacked energy after avenging one of its two previous losses with a home victory over Wisconsin on Saturday."I just think we need rest, just watching the TV," he said. "We had an emotional win, and now we have a game and we're traveling. A two-day prep is hard for everybody, only because of a rest factor." Maryland snapped Purdue's eight-game winning streak with a 70-56 triumph on Tuesday. The Terrapins outscored the Boilermakers 40-18 in the second half. Freshmen Jalen Smith, Eric Ayala and Aaron Wiggins combined for 42 points."It was a huge win for us. It helps us build on our confidence for sure, the freshmen's as well with how well they played," sophomore forward Bruno Fernando said. "I think that's a win where we can look back and realize we can stand against anybody in our conference."... For us to have that win means a lot. We are taking it one game at a time, we have Michigan next and that's all we are thinking about right now." The game against Purdue was the only one at home in a five-game stretch."It was great to be home. Now we have two more on the road," coach Mark Turgeon said. "We're comfortable out there. We are getting better, that's all I can ask. I think there's six games left and we are 10-4. Six games left -- we're going to see what we can do." The Terps and Wolverines will play again in Maryland on March 3.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 16, 2019ANN ARBOR, Mich. After a startling loss at last-place Penn State earlier in the week, Michigan coach John Beilein had a pretty good idea how his team would respond.''I had no doubt our defense would be strong today,'' he said.Charles Matthews scored 14 points and Iggy Brazdeikis added 13 to lift No. 6 Michigan to a 65-52 victory over No. 24 Maryland on Saturday. The Wolverines raced out to a 14-2 advantage and led by as much as 15 in the first half. It was a struggle for Michigan after that, but that big deficit was too much for Maryland to overcome.''You know how we are. Usually when we lose a game, we come back swinging super hard,'' Michigan's Isaiah Livers said. ''We played horrible at Penn State.'' Michigan led 27-18 at halftime. Maryland turned the ball over 13 times in the first half. The Terrapins (19-7, 10-5 Big Ten) had only three turnovers in the second, but the damage was done.''They got up to play and we didn't,'' said Anthony Cowan Jr., who scored 10 points for Maryland. ''You can't have those types of starts against teams like that.'' Michigan (23-2, 12-3) had only six turnovers in the game and none in the second half.Maryland looked like the better team for much of the second, and with the Terps down five, Cowan had a chance to cut further into the lead. But he missed an easy layup, and Brazdeikis made a 3-pointer at the other end to make it 50-42.Bruno Fernando scored all 12 of his points in the second half for Maryland.BIG PICTUREMaryland: The Terrapins are 6-3 when trailing at halftime this season, including 5-2 in Big Ten games. But that's a tough trend to rely on against good teams on the road. Fernando was impressive early in the second half, but that wasn't enough, and Maryland missed a bunch of 3-pointers toward the end.Michigan: This was a crucial win for the Wolverines in their chase for the Big Ten title. Michigan still has two games left against Michigan State and a rematch at Maryland. When the Wolverines defend like this, they can win in spite of poor outside shooting, but their 7-for-26 showing from 3-point range Saturday leaves plenty of room for improvement.CLOSING STRONGJon Teske, Michigan's 7-foot-1 center, scored nine points on just 4-of-13 shooting. He went 1 of 7 from 3-point range, but the one he made gave the Wolverines a 57-46 lead. It also capped a quick seven-point spurt by Teske, who had a couple dunks before that 3.''I think this is something that he has to do - we can't turn back and say, `Jon, you're not shooting anymore,''' Beilein said. ''We've got to find ways to score points. If a pick-and-pop 3 by a five man is one of those ways, we're going to keep going with it.'' CONTAINEDFernando's streak of seven consecutive double-doubles ended. He played less than half the first half, even though he wasn't in foul trouble. Coach Mark Turgeon said he felt Fernando's offensive struggles were impacting his defense.''We were playing 4-on-5 out there defensively,'' Turgeon said. ''Bruno's been one of our best defenders, right? So that was the most disappointing thing. I can handle missing jump hooks, but you got to bring it at the other hand. ... The second half, he was terrific. He was much better.'' POLL IMPLICATIONSMichigan might drop anyway because of the loss to Penn State, and Maryland may rise anyway after beating Purdue by 14 earlier in the week.UP NEXTMaryland: The Terrapins play at No. 21 Iowa on Tuesday night.Michigan: The Wolverines play at Minnesota on Thursday night. Michigan beat the Gophers last month on a buzzer-beater by Matthews.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25---Follow Noah Trister at https://twitter.com/noahtrister

GAME RECAP
Feb 16, 2019NASHVILLE, Tenn. With shots not falling, the Auburn Tigers focused on defense to steal away from Memorial Gym with a very rare win.Jared Harper scored 16 points, and Auburn beat Vanderbilt 64-53 Saturday for the Tigers' first win at Memorial Gym since Feb. 16, 2000.''That's a long time, and so I'm proud of our kids for grinding and able to get the win,'' Auburn coach Bruce Pearl said. ''We struggled offensively, Vanderbilt played hard ... Our defense was really good. We turned them over 19 times.'' Not only did Auburn turn Vanderbilt over 19 times, 10 of those were steals as the Tigers had a 17-0 scoring edge off turnovers.''We were flying around out there because our focus was not on any individual offense,'' Pearl said. ''Our focus was on winning the game and getting out of here and trying to make some history.'' Auburn (17-8, 6-6 Southeastern Conference) had lost 13 of the last 14 against Vanderbilt inside the league's oldest gym and had won only twice here since 1990. The Tigers survived a first half with their worst shooting performance in nearly a year to snap a nine-game skid to Vanderbilt along with their two-game skid this season. The Commodores (9-16, 0-12) lost their 13th straight, putting them just a loss off the longest losing streak in school history set over the span of the 1934-35 and 1935-36 season. Vanderbilt coach Bryce Drew called the skid uncharted waters for both himself, his assistants and his players.''It's been a big character check,'' Drew said. ''What is our program about? Where does our program stand? Where is our program going? As we're walking through this adversity, I'm seeing a vision, even more of a better vision than I saw a few years ago.'' Bryce Brown added 14 points for Auburn. Chuma Okeke and Malik Dunbar each had 13 apiece.Aaron Nesmith led Vanderbilt with 24 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Yanni Wetzell had his first double-double at Vandy with 10 and 10.Harper hit back-to-back 3s and finished his own 9-2 run giving Auburn its biggest lead at 43-33 with 10:44 to go.The Commodores wouldn't go away, pulling within four twice within the final five minutes. Brown stole the ball from Matt Ryan to set up a Dunbar layup with 3:53 left. Wetzell scored on a tip-in for Vandy, and Nesmith followed with a pair of free throws pulling the Commodores within 57-53.Vandy then forced a couple missed shots before coming away with the ball. Lee held the ball before trying to drive in only to be stripped by Anfernee McLemore, and Dunbar knocked down a 3 with 1:33 left. The Tigers finished the game scoring the final seven points.Auburn led 27-23 after an ugly first half where the Tigers made only two field goals inside the arc with four more from 3 surviving a nearly 8-minute stretch without making a basket.BIG PICTUREAuburn: The Tigers survived their worst half of shooting since March 18, 2018, in the first half in a loss to Clemson in the NCAA Tournament. The Tigers went 6 of 24 for 25 percent. The shooting woes filtered into Auburn's shooting outside the arc. A team averaging 11.04 made 3s a game went 9 of 25.Vanderbilt: The Commodores lost one of their key freshmen when Simisola Shittu fouled out for only the second time this season. He fouled out with 8:35 left and finished with a career-low 17 minute splayed. He also matched his fewest field goal attempts with two and finished with six points. It didn't help that point guard Saben Lee, who took over when Darius Garland was lost for the season, was held to four points for a second straight game.NUMBERSThe Commodores fixed a couple areas where they had been struggling: free throws and rebounds. They hit 14 of 15 in the second half at the free throw line, and they outrebounded Auburn 43-27.UP NEXTAuburn: Host Arkansas on Wednesday night.Vanderbilt: Visits Tennessee on Tuesday night.---Follow Teresa M. GAME PREVIEW
Feb 15, 2019The concerns have been rather different for No. 8 North Carolina and Wake Forest after games earlier this week. The Tar Heels are fussing about their inability to execute at times late in games. Wake Forest is trying to keep games close against most nationally ranked foes.North Carolina makes the trip for its first road game after a three-game homestand when the teams meet Saturday afternoon in Winston Salem, N. C."We got to get better," North Carolina coach Roy Williams said. "I got to do a better job coaching late-game situations." Williams was bemoaning the shortcomings that were exposed in Monday night's 69-61 loss to fourth-ranked Virginia, which snapped the Tar Heels' seven-game winning streak.North Carolina forward Garrison Brooks said the Tar Heels (19-5, 9-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) were out of sync when it mattered most."We struggled with late clock management," Brooks said. "Our time management wasn't that good. We didn't execute late in the game." That might have accounted for the Tar Heels' season-low point total.Still, North Carolina enters the weekend just a game behind first-place Duke in the ACC standings. Those teams meet for the first time Wednesday night, in Durham.Even with the loss to Virginia, North Carolina holds its best 11-game mark in ACC play in eight years.Wake Forest (9-14, 2-9) was a blowout victim Wednesday night at No. 17 Florida State.Other than an upset of North Carolina State, the Demon Deacons haven't finished closer than 16 points in any of the other six games against nationally ranked opponents this season. The 88-66 loss to Florida State came when the Demon Deacons were without a solid response."There was a stretch in the second half where they got out and reeled off a few points really quickly," Wake Forest coach Danny Manning said. "We need to do a better job of handling the ball and then getting back in transition defense. During that run, we didn't get back the way we needed to." Florida State held a 43-27 rebounding advantage. It marked the first time in ACC play that the Demon Deacons failed to secure at least 10 offensive rebounds. They were limited to six despite missing 35 shots from the field."We have to do a better job on the backboard," Manning said.Wake Forest gave up 12 offensive rebounds to the Seminoles. That's a bad omen given that North Carolina is one of the country's top rebounding teams, and that the Tar Heels collected 18 boards at the offensive end against Virginia.Freshman guard Coby White has led North Carolina in scoring eight times this season, including in the past two games.North Carolina has some physical wounds to heal as well. Cameron Johnson missed time down the stretch and was hobbling at times in the Virginia game, although Williams said Friday he expects Johnson to be available. Plus, forward Nassir Little didn't return after exiting with a first-half sprained ankle. Williams said he was unsure if Little would be able to play Saturday.Wake Forest had graduate transfer guard Torry Johnson back in action after a four-game absence with a shoulder injury. He played 23 minutes with five points off the bench at Florida State.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 16, 2019WINSTON-SALEM, N. C. Cameron Johnson scored 27 points, and eighth-ranked North Carolina scored the game's first 18 points in Saturday's 95-57 win over Wake Forest.Freshman Coby White added 10 points, five rebounds and six assists for the Tar Heels (20-5, 10-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who dominated from the tip following their first loss in a month. The Tar Heels, who lost to fourth-ranked Virginia on Monday, ran out to leads of 18-0, 25-3 and 35-7. They shot 74 percent in the opening half and finished at 62 percent while making 16 of 25 3-pointers, with Johnson making his first eight shots and six from behind the arc.Freshman Jaylen Hoard scored 17 points in an ugly afternoon for the Demon Deacons (9-15, 2-10), who suffered their most lopsided loss in three decades at Joel Coliseum.Wake Forest shot 33 percent.BIG PICTUREUNC: The Tar Heels got anything they wanted to start a game that resembled more of a November tuneup than a February league date. Johnson led that effort by making 10 of 13 shots and 7 of 10 3-pointers. Still, there was at least one apparent concern: the health of freshman reserve Nassir Little. He was a gametime decision after rolling his right ankle early against Virginia and felt good enough to play 11 first-half minutes, but he wasn't on the bench after halftime.Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons found reason for hope with a Jan. 15 win against then-No. 17 North Carolina State, but they had won just once since with five losses coming by at least 16 points. Things began badly Saturday when Hoard didn't start after arriving late for a pregame shootaround. And they got no better, most notably with leading scorer Brandon Childress (15.1 points) going scoreless on 0-for-12 shooting with six turnovers.UP NEXTUNC: The Tar Heels travel to Cameron Indoor Stadium for a rivalry game against second-ranked Duke on Wednesday.Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons visit Notre Dame on Tuesday.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25---Follow Aaron Beard on Twitter at https://twitter.com/aaronbeardap

Feb 16, 2019AUSTIN, Texas Kerwin Roach II scored 16 points and Texas beat Oklahoma State 69-57 Saturday, sending the Cowboys to their fifth straight loss.Dylan Osetkowski scored 14 point on 5-of-5 shooting with three 3-pointers for the Longhorns (15-11, 7-6 Big 12).The Cowboys, fighting to get out of the bottom of the Big 12, have lost eight of their last nine and haven't won a Big 12 matchup since Jan. 12. One of their only two league wins was over Texas in the first matchup.Oklahoma State (9-16, 2-10) looked to do it again with a flurry of early 3-pointers, including three by Thomas Dziagwa. Texas pushed its defense farther out to guard the Cowboys shooters and Oklahoma State made just one over the final 9 minutes of the first half.Texas trailed 20-19 before closing the first half on a 19-7 run punctuated by Roach's 3-pointer from the corner with 1 second left in the half.Dziagwa led Oklahoma State with 23 points, making seven 3-pointers.Texas led by 13 early in the second before the Cowboys cut it 42-38. The Longhorns responded with three straight baskets and a 3-point play by Courtney Ramey to end the threat.BIG PICTUREOklahoma State: The Cowboys have fallen on hard times and had very little working offensively when Dziagwa wasn't firing away from long range. The Cowboys were 12 of 30 inside the arc and went 9 of 18 from the free throw line. Dziagwa was 0-6 when he wasn't shooting 3-pointers.Texas: The Longhorns will like the look of a confident shooting stroke from Osetkowski, who came in just 2 of 21 shooting 3-pointers in the previous nine games. He made two from the same spot in right corner in the first half, then made another with 7:12 to play that put Texas ahead by 10. His ability to score away from the basket will be key to the Texas offense over the stretch run of the season.UP NEXTOklahoma State hosts TCU on Monday. The Cowboys lost the previous matchup 70-68.Texas plays Oklahoma Saturday, looking for a season sweep over the Sooners. Texas won the previous meeting 75-72 when the Sooners missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds.----More college basketball: https://apnews.com/tag/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 15, 2019One of the coaches in Saturday's Big 12 matchup of the visiting Baylor Bears and the 15th-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders says his opponent is noteworthy nationally, not only in the conference.Who's talking about who? Here's a hint: He's not talking about the one with the lofty ranking attached. The Bears (16-8, 7-4 Big 12), who had to reinvent themselves after losing sophomore big man Tristan Clark to a season-ending left knee injury on Jan. 8, have still won seven of their last nine games, a span that includes a home court 73-62 win over the Red Raiders (20-5, 8-4) on Jan. 19.Leading scorer Makia Mason, who is averaging 15.6 points a game and exploded for 40 on Feb. 2 in a rout of TCU, missed a game last weekend with a foot injury. While he returned Monday, he made only 2 of 14 shots and went 0 of 5 on 3-point attempts as Baylor defeated the visiting Oklahoma Sooners.Instead, Devonte Bandoo scored a team-high 19 points, more than double his season average, in the win.Further, Bears coach Scott Drew doesn't know when guard King McClure will return from a knee injury that has sidelined him for two games. McClure, who is averaging 9.9 points and 5.4 rebounds, could be a game-time decision."Everyone on our team from, Devonte Bandoo to Freddie Gillespie ... everyone's stepped up and helped us win games, and it hasn't been the same two or three guys every night," Drew said.Gillespie, who is averaging 4.6 points and 3.9 rebounds a game, finished with 13 and nine in Baylor's narrow loss to conference-leading Kansas State on Feb. 9.Texas Tech coach Chris Beard said he knows what to expect from the Bears, "one of the hottest teams in the country right now, not just the Big 12," since they were already without Clark when they beat the Red Raiders last month."We want to try to do some things defensively that can change the game from time to time, but Baylor is going to shoot 3-point shots. They're going to make 3-point shots," Beard said, calling the long-range game Baylor's "identity." Texas Tech's identity is unabashedly defense. At midweek, the Red Raiders were first in the nation in defensive field goal percentage (36.2) and third in scoring defense (57.3), perhaps indicating how well Baylor did in scoring 73 on them last month."We spend a lot of time on defense in practice every day. ... Our players, they've really bought into it," said Beard, whose team's only nonconference loss was to Duke.Texas Tech averages 70.9 points a game offensively, led by Jarrett Culver's 17.7 points a game, with Matt Mooney and Davide Moretti both just under 11 per game."Texas Tech, they've really been shooting the ball well, and defensively they've been off the charts all year long, but when they're making shots, they're really hard to beat," Drew said.Culver, a 6-foot-6 guard, also leads the Red Raiders with 6.2 rebounds a game.Texas Tech is riding a three-game winning streak, but in an indication of how tough life in the Big 12 can be, the Red Raiders endured three straight losses in mid-January: to now-No. 23 Iowa State, Baylor, and now-No. 18 Kansas State, with the margins of victory ranging from four to 13 points."A lot of these games in the Big 12 turn into one or two-possession games. You've got to give yourself a chance in close games," Beard said.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 16, 2019LUBBOCK, Texas Jarrett Culver scored 18 points and Davide Moretti added 17 as No. 15 Texas Tech cruised past short-handed and turnover-prone Baylor 86-61 on Saturday.Jared Butler scored 16 points and Mario Kegler added 15 for the Bears, who were without key backcourt players Makai Mason (foot) and King McClure (knee) for the third consecutive game.Texas Tech (21-6, 9-4 Big 12) stayed in second place in the Big 12 by using an uncharacteristic hot hand from 3-point range to surge into a first-half lead that was never threatened. The Raiders made 8 of 14 from long range in the first half, compared to 2 of 12 from inside the arc. Texas Tech finished 12 of 29 on 3-pointers.Culver made three 3s on the way to 14 first-half points while Moretti was 4 of 8 for the game. The same offensive problems Baylor encountered in the previous two games without Mason and McClure surfaced again while facing one of the best defensive teams in the country. The Bears (16-9, 7-5) struggled with 19 turnovers that led to 25 points for Texas Tech in their third loss in four games since a six-game winning streak that put them in Big 12 contention. They shot 35 percent (17 of 49) while missing 10 of 12 from 3-point range after halftime.Baylor was within 18-15 after a 3-pointer by Butler, but the Red Raiders reeled off a 10-0 run that included seven points from Matt Mooney.Devonte Bandoo and Butler connected on consecutive 3s to get Baylor within seven before Texas Tech answered with another burst for a 45-32 halftime lead. The Raiders opened the second half with an 11-2 run, fueled by a pair of 3-pointers by Moretti.BIG PICTUREBaylor: The Bears are swooning, with three losses in their last four games, and are fading out of serious contention for the Big 12 championship.Texas Tech: Since a humbling performance at Kansas that was their only loss in the past seven games, the Red Raiders have found a groove. Three of the four victories on the current winning streak were by at least 25 points.UP NEXTBaylor: At Iowa State on Tuesday.Texas Tech: Hosts No. 14 Kansas next Saturday.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 14, 2019After back-to-back games against top-10 teams, No. 4 Virginia gets a slight reprieve when it hosts Notre Dame on Saturday afternoon, just two days before facing yet another ranked squad. The Cavaliers split a tough two games in three-day stretch against Duke and at North Carolina, and will then visit No. 22 Virginia Tech and No. 16 Louisville next week. The Fighting Irish (13-11, 3-8) will be one of only three unranked conference opponents Virginia (21-2, 9-2) tangles with in the month of February."I told the team before the game, 'I don't care if we played Duke on Saturday and we're on the road today,'" Virginia guard Ty Jerome said after his team's win over North Carolina. "Every game we come out and we expect to win. No matter where we are, no matter who we are playing against." Winning is what head coach Tony Bennett and his Virginia teams have done-- and done often against Notre Dame.Since the Fighting Irish entered the ACC in 2013, they have never beat Virginia in the regular season and have just one postseason win to their credit against the Cavaliers.Virginia will be looking to move their head-to-head record to 8-0 against Notre Dame as conference foes in the regular season, and 13-2 all-time.The two teams' late-January tilt left the Irish with their worst home loss since 1999, as Virginia departed South Bend with an 82-55 rout of the home team."I can't say enough how impressed I am with them," Notre Dame head coach Mike Brey said after the loss. "They could win the National Championship. They are men who have won together and are polished, and we are the exact opposite right now. We're searching and trying to build it." Notre Dame, after a brutal 1-7 start to conference play, has won two of three and will be looking to sustain momentum it captured with a grungy 69-59 win over Georgia Tech last weekend."I told our guys, we're going to win the ugliest college basketball game in history, but it's going to be a league win," Brey said. "Let's keep playing." The Irish have struggled on offense this season while missing key pieces, as they rank near the bottom of the conference in shooting percentage (40.2, 14th) and points per game (71.5, 11th).John Mooney continues to be a double-double machine for the Irish, as he is averaging team highs of 14.2 points and 10.8 rebounds this season. Mooney had 15 points and 10 rebounds in the teams' first meeting.Virginia never showed signs of a hangover after its loss to Duke, as the Cavaliers knocked off No. 8 North Carolina on the road Monday night and will now return home, where they've been virtually unbeatable over the past five seasons."I really challenged them hard before Monday's game," Bennett said of his team. "During the day, we talked about what this meant and just responding the right way to a hard-fought loss."And I think they did." --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 16, 2019CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Kyle Guy scored 22 points, De'Andre Hunter had 20 with 10 rebounds and No. 4 Virginia withstood a late push by Notre Dame to win 60-54 on Saturday.Hunter scored six points during a 9-0 run for the Cavaliers (22-2, 10-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) after the Fighting Irish closed to within 45-44 with 8:12 left. But Notre Dame (13-12, 3-9) then went more than five minutes without a point as Hunter scored inside and hit four free throws. Guy added a 3-pointer and it was 54-44 with less than five minutes to play.T. J. Gibbs scored 17 and D. J. Harvey had 10 for Notre Dame. Gibbs scored Notre Dame's first 10 points and was the only Irish player to score until Harvey's basket with 6:41 left in the first half.Notre Dame closed to within 54-50 when Virginia went scoreless for more than four minutes after a pair of free throws by Hunter with 4:55 left. The Irish called timeout with 41 seconds left, and when Virginia inbounded the ball to Guy, Nate Laszewski stole it and scored with 34.5 seconds left, making it 54-52 and prompting a timeout by the Cavaliers. After Virginia inbounded, Guy was fouled and made both ends of a 1-and-1. A dunk by John Mooney for the Irish and two more free throws by Guy finished it off for the Cavaliers.Virginia led just 29-25 at halftime but looked poised to pull away after a 10-3 run early in the second half gave the Cavaliers a 39-30 lead. The Irish responded with a 10-2 surge as Laszewski scored seven of the 10 points. That pulled them within 41-40 with just under 11 minutes to play and the Cavaliers never relinquished the lead, but also struggled to get much separation.BIG PICTURENotre Dame: The Irish nearly pulled off a stunning upset against a Virginia team that hadn't played since Monday and shot the ball poorly. Notre Dame's zone defense disrupted Virginia's rhythm. The Cavaliers won 82-55 when the teams played in South Bend, Indiana, on Jan. 26.Virginia: The Cavaliers had uncharacteristically averaged 13.5 turnovers in their past four games, but cleaned that up, at least in the first half when they had no turnovers. They did cough it up eight times in the second half and were outscored 9-1 in points off turnovers for the game.UP NEXTNotre Dame: The Irish are at home against Wake Forest on Tuesday night.Virginia: The Cavaliers play at No. 22 Virginia Tech on Monday night.--More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25

GAME RECAP
Feb 16, 2019TUSCALOOSA, Ala. Freshman star Andrew Nembhard scored a career-high 21 points without missing a shot and Florida throttled Alabama's offense in a 71-53 win on Saturday. The Gators (14-11, 6-6 Southeastern Conference) held the Crimson Tide (15-10, 6-6) without a field goal for nearly eight minutes to start the game and fought off a second-half rally attempt.Nembhard, whose previous scoring high was 13 points, made all nine field goal attempts, including a pair of 3-pointers.Keyontae Johnson had 14 points and 13 rebounds for the Gators, who shot 54 percent from the floor. KeVaughn Allen scored 13.Kira Lewis Jr., like Nembhard a freshman five-star recruit, led Alabama with 14 points. Donta Hall and John Petty each scored 10 points. The Tide rebounded from that opening field goal drought to shoot 44 percent. But Alabama made just 10 of 22 free throw attempts and managed only one point better than its season-low.The Gators took a 51-34 lead on Jalen Hudson's 3-pointer with 13:17 left. Alabama managed to cut it to single digits a few minutes later with an 8-0 spurt. The Tide rally fizzled with missed shots on a pair of chances to pull to within five or six and Nembhard followed with a basket and free throw to effectively end the threat.BIG PICTUREFlorida: The Gators have won eight in a row at Coleman Coliseum. Florida's last loss there came in 2006 and that team didn't lose again on its way to SEC tournament and national titles.Alabama: With a home loss that won't look good on the NCAA Tournament resume, the Tide didn't make a basket until Galin Smith's layup with 12:15 left before halftime, missing its first seven shots.UP NEXTFlorida plays its second straight road game, visiting LSU Wednesday night.Alabama visits Texas A&M Tuesday night. GAME PREVIEW
Feb 15, 2019Two teams going in opposite directions meet for the second time this season when No. 17 Florida State visits Georgia Tech on Saturday in Atlanta.Florida State (19-5, 7-4) has won six straight and become one of the hottest teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The last time the Seminoles won six straight ACC games was 2011-12 when they won the ACC Tournament and won their opening-round game in the NCAA Tournament.Georgia Tech (11-14, 3-9) has lost six straight and eight of its last nine. The Yellow Jackets have had offensive woes all season and rank last in the ACC in scoring with 65.6 pointsThe teams met on Feb. 2 at Tallahassee, with Florida State taking a 59-49 victory. Georgia Tech was with six points with six minutes left before the Seminoles put the game away.Florid State has been sparked by the play of Mfiondu Kabengele, who is averaging 17 points and shot 58 percent from the floor over the last six games. He led the team with 12 points in the last previous meeting with Georgia Tech."I think he's only scratched the surface of his potential," Florida State coach Leonard Hamilton said. "He's really doing a nice job of being more and more confident. We're putting him in a position where he has a chance to have some success." Kabengele remains the team's sixth man but continues to lead the Seminoles in scoring (13.4 points) and is third in rebounds (5.3) in only 20.1 minutes per game.In Wednesday's 88-66 drubbing of Wake Forest, it was senior Christ Koumadje who made the biggest difference. The 7-foot-4 center produced 20 points and 12 rebounds for his first career double-double.Georgia Tech coach Josh Pastner changed the focus and tempo of the offense on Wednesday and the Yellow Jackets came close in a 76-68 loss to No. 22 Virginia Tech.Pastner abandoned the previous game plan of pounding the ball inside to big men James Banks and Abdoulaye Gueye. He put Gueye on the bench after only four minutes and went with a smaller, quicker lineup. The ploy had some advantages - at least for one night. The Yellow Jackets used a 14-0 spurt before halftime to take a 30-27 lead at the break, and refused to go away in the second half, even when the Hokies stretched their lead to double-digits on a couple of occasions."We had to size down, get more fluidity on offense," Pastner said. "We had more opportunities. We played a little faster and got more possessions." One player who benefited from the change of strategy was freshman guard Michael Devoe, who scored a career-high 22 points and made four 3-pointers. Devoe had 18 points in the previous game against Notre Dame. Banks carried the load in the paint with 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocks."Michael Devoe is playing at a high level," Pastner said. "And James Banks is playing at a high level." But the troubles continue for guard Jose Alvarado, the team's leading scorer at 11.4 points. The sophomore was 2-for-10 from the field and scored four points against Virginia Tech. Over the last four games he is 5-for-40 from the floor."Jose had some nice looks," Pastner said. "He's got to play better for us. GAME RECAP
Feb 16, 2019ATLANTA Christ Koumadje had 10 points and 12 rebounds as No. 17 Florida State tied a school record with its seventh straight ACC win, beating Georgia Tech 69-47 Saturday.Freshman Devin Vassell came off the bench to score a team-high 11 while playing in his hometown for the Seminoles (20-5, 8-4).Georgia Tech (11-15, 3-10) lost its seventh straight ACC game with another offensive struggle.Tech guard Jose Alvarado broke out of a lengthy slump with 17 points, but the Yellow Jackets made just 8 of 36 shots from inside the 3-point arc and shot 34.8 percent overall. They've averaged 53.1 points in the streak. On Saturday, they put up their seventh and eighth halves in the streak scoring 25 or fewer points. The teams were tied at 10 early before the Jackets fell into the first of multiple shooting freezes, and the Seminoles stretched their lead to 31-15 on a layup by Terance Mann with 4:27 left.To that point, Tech had made just 6 of 26 shots, and center James Banks III - the Jackets' leading scorer in ACC action - was off the mark on his first six.Phil Cofer, David Nichols and Vassell each a pair of 3-pointers before Alvarado and Abdoulaye Gueye hit back-to-back shots from beyond the arc for the Jackets, and Banks finally got loose for a dunk shortly before the buzzer to pull Tech within 34-23 at halftime.BIG PICTUREFlorida State: The first time the Seminoles put together a seven-game ACC winning streak, in the 2011-'12 season, they went on to win the ACC Tournament. This also cemented a fourth consecutive season with 20 or more wins overall, matching a run from 2009-'12 that also was under head coach Leonard Hamilton.Georgia Tech: The Jackets keep churning their lineup, as freshman forward Kristian Sjolund made his first start and sophomore Moses Wright returned to the lineup for the first time in more than a month. Sjolund scored 19 points in Tech's previous two games after scoring just nine combined all season before that, and he can shoot. They were replaced to start the second half by Gueye and Brandon Alston. Sjolund had 11 points, including 3 of 7 3-pointers, and Wright scored two.UP NEXTFlorida State: Will play Tuesday at Clemson.Georgia Tech: Will be at home Wednesday against Pitt.

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 14, 2019The season can't end soon enough for West Virginia. From an opening game upset loss at home to Buffalo, to a knee injury that knocked star center Sagaba Konate out after eight games, to the failure of the team to defend up to usual standards, this has been one disastrous season. And it only got worse Monday night with the news that coach Bob Huggins dismissed senior forward Esa Ahmad and junior guard Wesley Harris for what a school news release termed a "violation of athletic department policies." Ahmad averaged 12 points and 5.8 rebounds, shooting 46.2 percent from the field, while Harris scored 7.9 points and grabbed 4.5 rebounds. Ahmad recently passed the 1,000-point mark for his career, while Harris was considered the team's best defender. What remains of the Mountaineers travels to No. 14 Kansas in Lawrence on Saturday for a Big 12 Conference game that might be more accurately termed a mismatch. West Virginia is down to nine scholarship players, seven of whom are playing their first collegiate season.Winning at Allen Fieldhouse with your best team playing at its peak is downright difficult. Doing it under these conditions seems to be just about impossible. And it's not like the Mountaineers (10-14, 2-9) are coming into this one off a good performance. They have been idle since a humiliating 75-53 loss Feb. 9 at home against Texas, which led by 27 at the final TV timeout, thanks to a 41-15 spurt that started late in the first half. The Longhorns threw down no less than eight dunks, taking advantage of shabby defense."It's embarrassing," Huggins told the Morgantown Dominion Post. "I'm embarrassed. I'm not sure our guys are, but I was embarrassed." To make matters worse, West Virginia is expected to be without guard James "Beetle" Bolden, who has sat out the last four games with an injury suffered at No. 1 Tennessee Jan. 26. Bolden is averaging 12.2 points and shooting 82 percent at the foul line. While the Mountaineers try to piece together some kind of lineup, Kansas (19-6, 8-4) aims to keep its 14-year string of Big 12 titles alive with a late-season rally. The Jayhawks presently trail first-place Kansas State by 1 1/2 games, and the Wildcats have a game at hand.Kansas is coming off a 82-77 overtime win Monday night at TCU, just its second road victory in eight tries this season. The Jayhawks blew a 12-point second half lead, but got six clutch foul shots from Devon Dotson in the final 40 seconds of overtime to hold off the Horned Frogs."That was a game in which we played really well for the most part, then we screwed up," Kansas coach Bill Self said. "Somehow or another, we were able to pull it back. We were fortunate that it went overtime after we screwed it up, and then we played really well in OT." Like West Virginia, the Jayhawks have gone really young. With senior guard Lagerald Vick taking a leave of absence, Kansas trotted out a lineup with four freshman starters and junior Dedric Lawson. It was only the second time in Self's 16 seasons that he's started four freshmen.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 16, 2019LAWRENCE, Kan. Devon Dotson and K. J. Lawson each scored 15 points, and No. 14 Kansas beat depleted West Virginia 78-53 on Saturday.Dedric Lawson, K. J.'s brother, had 14 points for the Jayhawks (20-6, 9-4 Big 12), who won their third straight as they continue to start four freshmen.Lamont West and Chase Harler scored 11 points apiece for West Virginia (10-15, 2-10), which struggled without former starters Esa Ahmed and Wesley Harris, who were dismissed from the team earlier in the week for violating athletic department policies. Ahmed was averaging 12 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, while Harris was putting up 7.9 points and 4.5 rebounds.Kansas held West Virginia to a season-low 16 points at halftime, and the Mountaineers shot 33.9 percent for the game, including 3 of 23 from 3-point range. West Virginia didn't reach double-digit scoring until 5:52 remained in the first half. The Mountaineers finished with 24 turnovers. In West Virginia's 65-64 win over Kansas in Morgantown on Jan. 19, the Mountaineers turned it over just 13 times. The Jayhawks got the crowd excited with several flashy plays in the second half, including a fierce one-handed dunk by Ochai Agbaji. Fans at Allen Fieldhouse were also pleased to learn of No. 18 Kansas State's 78-64 loss to No. 23 Iowa State as Kansas cruised through the final minutes.BIG PICTUREWest Virginia: The Mountaineers sit last in the Big 12 standings. West Virginia has not finished conference play outside the top five since 2014, when it ended the season in seventh place.Kansas: The Jayhawks remain in contention for the Big 12 title. After Kansas State's loss to Iowa State, Kansas lurks a half-game behind the Wildcats, tied with No. 15 Texas Tech. The Sunflower Showdown in Allen Fieldhouse on Feb. 25 could end up deciding the conference championship.UP NEXTWest Virginia: Hosts Kansas State on Monday.Kansas: Visits Texas Tech next Saturday in another critical game in the upper tier of the Big 12.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and https://twitter.com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 15, 2019No. 23 Iowa State travels to No. 18 Kansas State for the biggest game on the Big 12 Conference's Saturday schedule.Kansas State (19-5, 9-2 Big 12) leads the conference by 1 1/2 games over Texas Tech and Kansas, with Iowa State (18-6, 7-4) a half game behind that duo.The Wildcats will be looking to extend a nine-game conference winning streak that has launched them to the top of the conference. Those nine consecutive victories are the longest conference winning streak for the Wildcats since they won 11 consecutive in the Big 8 Conference in 1974.The Wildcats stood 0-2 in the conference and looked to be on the verge of collapse when they trailed West Virginia 42-21 early in the second half at home on Jan. 9. But they used a furious comeback against the Mountaineers and then forged a last-second 58-57 victory on the road against Iowa State on Jan. 12 to get things rolling."I'd be totally shocked, to be honest," K-State head coach Bruce Weber said when asked recently about how he felt about his team's chances at halftime against West Virginia. "I didn't think we'd win that game."You've got to give Barry (Brown) and Mike McGuirl a lot of credit for coming to play that second half, fighting it out and it gave us a little boost of energy. Then you get Dean back. Things just kind of fell in place." The nine-game run has come against all nine opponents in the Big 12. The Wildcats already have avenged their two season-opening conference losses (Texas Tech and Texas) and will next face the two teams they beat to start their streak in Iowa State and West Virginia (on Monday). Most recently, all five Kansas State starters scored in double figures, and the team shot 54.9 percent (28 of 51) from the field in a 71-64 victory at Texas. Down 39-31 with 1:37 remaining before halftime, the Wildcats combined for a 23-8 run sandwiched around halftime, including a 19-8 run to start the second half, to earn its third consecutive victory over the Longhorns.Kansas State was picked to finish second in the Big 12 in the preseason, so the Wildcats' lofty status is not a surprise. Iowa State, however, was picked to finish sixth. The fact that the Cyclones are right in the thick of the race is testament to coach Steve Prohm.Among their victories are a 77-60 drubbing of Kansas at home and a 68-64 win at Texas Tech following the defeat to the Wildcats.Iowa State had a week off after a surprising 92-83 loss to TCU, just their second home loss this season. The Cyclones still have the Big 12's top offense, leading the conference at 79.0 points per game, field-goal percentage (48.1), free-throw percentage (73.7) and assist-to-turnover ratio (1.4).Iowa State has balance with four players averaging in double figures. They are led by Big 12 player of the year candidate Marial Shayok, who ranks second in the league at 19.3 points per game. But facing the Wildcats, who have the ability to take teams out of their offensive flow, Prohm knows his team needs to focus on its own defense."(It) will be all about us getting better," Prohm said this week. "We've got to continue to work on guarding the ball and being in the gaps, being able to keep people out of the paint." Kansas State also has four players averaging double-figures in scoring, led by Brown (15.4). Wade has 13.9 per game and Stokes has 10.3. Xavier Sneed has at 10.0 points per game.Kansas State holds the all-time lead in the series at 140-87, including the last three. Saturday will be just the third time that both teams have been ranked when they faced each other.--Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 16, 2019MANHATTAN, Kan. Iowa State was drilled at home by TCU a week ago, then had to sit around without another game until Saturday, left to brood over its uphill climb to get back into the Big 12 race. The Cyclones finally released that pent-up angst against No. 18 Kansas State.Lindell Wigginton hit five 3-pointers and scored 23 points, Talen Horton-Tucker buried six 3s and had 20, and the No. 23 Cyclones pulled away late for a 78-64 victory over the Big 12-leading Wildcats on Saturday to answer a chorus of critics that had been surfaced over the past seven days.''Soft on defense. Not moving the basketball. Not running the floor. Not sharing. Not being engaged in huddles. Not executing out of timeouts,'' Cyclones coach Steve Prohm said, reflecting on what needed to change after the TCU loss. ''We had a list of things that weren't very good.'' Oh, the Cyclones (19-6, 8-4) were quite good against the Wildcats. They had three double-figure scorers with Marial Shayok contributing 13 points and 13 boards. They went 14 of 24 from beyond the 3-point line, shooting right over Kansas State's vaunted defense. And they dished out 19 assists while turning it over just 10 times.''When our A-team shows up,'' Prohm said, ''we have a chance to do good things. The things the B-team does, we have to keep them as far away as we can.'' Barry Brown had 23 points for the Wildcats, but he didn't get a whole lot of help. The rest of the team was a combined 2 of 13 from the 3-point arc and 11 of 34 from the field.Making matters worse, the short-handed Wildcats - already without top backup Cartier Diarra because of hand surgery - lost senior forward Dean Wade with 9:18 to go. The preseason Big 12 player of the year limped off the floor and spent the remainder of the game sitting on the end of the bench.Wade missed several weeks earlier this season with a right foot injury.''He had some soreness in his foot all week. He didn't practice. He was in a boot,'' Kansas State coach Bruce Weber said. ''It's not the same injury as before. He tweaked it. ... We'll just have to see.'' The Wildcats' half-court defense held Iowa State in check until late in the first half, when Horton-Tucker spoiled even good coverage. The freshman guard hit four 3s and finished with 14 first-half points, one of them a fade-away from well beyond the arc as the shot clock expired.''What are you going to do?'' Weber said. ''It seemed like they had us spread out, they got us down the line. It's the same team we held to 57 at their place. They're good offensively.'' Iowa State was poised to carry a big lead into the break, but Nick Weiler-Babb's miss with a couple seconds left gave Brown a chance to unload a 3-pointer from just inside the mid-court line.It rattled home, giving Brown 16 points in the half and drawing Kansas State within 38-31.Horton-Tucker answered out of the locker room with a 3-pointer from about six feet beyond the arc, and the Cyclones still led 50-41 when Wigginton buried a 3 with 13 1/2 minutes to go.Kansas State pecked away at its deficit, pulling within 57-56 on Mike McGuirl's follow shot with 7 minutes left. But the Cyclones continued to respond with a barrage of 3s, and it was Wigginton whose two fall-away 3s in succession allowed them to regain control. They put the game away when Cameron Lard threw down a dunk with 2:50 to go, and Horton-Tucker buried one last 3-pointer from in front of his celebrating bench.''We just battled the whole game,'' Wigginton said. ''When everyone was doubting us, we came in and responded every time. We've got toughness. We didn't show it last week but we did today.'' BIG PICTUREIowa State is right back in the Big 12 title picture after avenging its loss to the Wildcats at Hilton Coliseum. The Cyclones were coming off a surprising home loss to TCU, but otherwise they've won seven of their last nine games - including four of their last five on the road.Kansas State's margin for error was trimmed considerably, especially with a trip to Kansas still on the docket. The Wildcats now lead Texas Tech by just a half-game in the standings, and the Cyclones and Jayhawks are within striking distance in what has become a four-team race.UP NEXTIowa State returns home to face Baylor on Tuesday night.Kansas State heads to West Virginia on Monday night.---More college basketball: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and http://twitter.com/-Top25

GAME PREVIEW
Feb 14, 2019One of former Purdue coach Gene Keady's favorite sayings was it's not who you play, it's when you play 'em.No. 12 Purdue (17-7, 10-3 Big Ten) will host Penn State (9-15, 2-11), which is coming off Tuesday's upset of No. 6 Michigan, on Saturday in West Lafayette, Ind.However, the Boilermakers would seem to have plenty of motivation, having blown a eight-point halftime lead in a 70-56 loss at No. 24 Maryland on Tuesday. That snapped an eight-game winning streak for Purdue.Senior Ryan Cline said the Boilermakers' first loss in more than a month should be a wake-up call."There are times when you're on the highest highs when you're winning, and there are times you get low and kind of crank up the intensity a little bit," Cline told the Lafayette Journal & Courier.Purdue coach Matt Painter, who played and coached under Keady, said the loss was a learning moment for the Boilermakers."We've just got to play better," Painter said. "We had a chance to win this game. We put ourselves in position to win this game at halftime. So you learn from it and try to get better. Each guy has a different thing to work it. Even when you win games, you are trying to watch film and make improvements." Purdue shot 28.2 percent overall and 21.2 percent from 3-point range against Maryland. The Boilermakers, outscored 40-18 in the second half, made a mere 17 percent of their second-half field-goal attempts. Carsen Edwards, Purdue's leading scorer, matched his average of 24 points, but was 8 of 27 from the field. The Boilermakers barely escaped with a 99-90 overtime victory at Penn State Jan. 31.The Nittany Lions have had several close losses in the Big Ten, but finally broke through with a 75-69 victory over visiting Michigan."It was our second court storm since I've been here," said Penn State junior forward Lamar Stevens, who averages a team-high 19.2 points. "This one meant so much because of every thing this team has been through. Our young guys have stepped up in a big way. To see those guys grow over time and come out with a big against a great Michigan team meant a lot to me." "I think over the last couple of games we've learned how to win and what it takes to win in the Big Ten," Stevens added.Penn State coach Patrick Chambers expects the victory to boost the team's morale and give it momentum down the home stretch."It means our players stay committed," Chambers said. "Our leaders did a fantastic job of keeping us together. It means our staff did a good job of what we need to do and make sure we have our identity down pat. We defended. We rebounded. We had toughness."We got to continue that down the stretch. They're starting to see their hard work pay off. We were so close at Ohio State (a four-point loss). We were so close here with Purdue. So close at Nebraska (a six-point loss), so many close games. We hadn't seen the fruits of our labor. This definitely puts us in a place where we're going to show up again and continue to press this." Stevens led the upset with 26 points and 12 rebounds, but Chambers was most impressed with his leadership."He was fantastic," Chambers said. "He took over huddles before I get in there. He kept them positive." Stevens said his teammates have been fantastic."They never get too high or low," he said. "They stay in the gym and keep working. With people like that, success is going to find you, and it found us against Michigan." --Field Level Media

GAME RECAP
Feb 16, 2019WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. Carsen Edwards scored 15 of his 21 points in the second half Saturday and Matt Haarms added a career-high 18 points to lead No. 12 Purdue past Penn State, 76-64.The Boilermakers (18-7, 11-3 Big Ten) reclaimed a share of the conference lead with their ninth win in 10 games.Lamar Stevens finished with 18 points and Rasir Bolton had 17 for Penn State (9-16, 2-12). The Nittany Lions have lost have 10 of 12.The Edwards-Haarms combination completely changed the game early in the second half. The duo teamed up to score nine points in a 14-2 run that turned a four-point game into a 50-34 lead.Penn State answered with six straight to cut the deficit to 50-40 and eventually got as close as 61-56 when Josh Reaves completed a three-point play with 4:27 left. But Purdue closed it out with an 8-0 run.It was an odd game. The Big Ten's two top scorers - Edwards and Stevens - both played through foul trouble and turned the ball over a combined 15 times. Neither team followed its usual script in the first half, either.Instead, the Nittany Lions made three 3-pointers in the first four minutes to help give them a 17-10 lead. They made only two more the rest of the game.Purdue, meanwhile, committed 12 first-half turnovers - more than its final tally in all but seven games this season. The Boilermakers wound up with a season-high 23.And yet with Edwards making only one basket over the final 13 1/2 minutes of the first half, the Boilermakers somehow scrapped their way back. They tied the score at 19, took their first lead on Nojel Eastern's layup with 6:47 left and closed out the half with a 33-30 advantage.BIG PICTUREPenn State: This series has been full of frustration for the Nittany Lions. After rallying from a 17-point deficit to force overtime, the Boilermakers pulled away in January. This time, Penn State outplayed Purdue for most of the first half and a stretch in the second half, but couldn't overcome a poor start to the second half. The Nittany Lions have lost nine straight in the series and 12 straight at Mackey Arena.Purdue: The Boilermakers overcame their turnover flurry to rebound from Tuesday's loss with a solid final 30 minutes. While the slip-up at No. 24 Maryland earlier this week could lead to a slide in the rankings and Saturday's start wasn't impressive, the Boilermakers shouldn't fall far in the rankings - if they drop at all.STAT PACKPenn State: Stevens also had six rebounds and eight turnovers. ... Myles Dread scored 10 points and was the only other Penn State player in double figures. ... The Nittany Lions were 5 of 24 on 3s, including 0 of 9 in the second half. ... John Harrar and Mike Watkins each fouled out. Stevens and Reaves also finished the game with four fouls.Purdue: Haarms made only his second start since Dec. 16 and had six rebounds and two blocks. ... Edwards finished with seven turnovers. ... Grady Eifert had seven points and eight rebounds, while Eastern had four steals. ... The Boilermakers have won 15 consecutive home games. ... Former Purdue star E'Twaun Moore was honored at halftime with his own bobblehead. Moore plays for the NBA's New Orleans Pelicans.UP NEXTPenn State: Returns home to face Nebraska on Tuesday.Purdue: Hopes to extend a four-game winning streak against rival Indiana on Tuesday.---For more college basketball coverage: https://apnews.com/Collegebasketball and http://twitter.com/-Top25
