Mets hope to get deGrom back on track vs. Reds The New York Mets would be thrilled if reigning National League Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom began regaining his form Wednesday when he faces the visiting Cincinnati Reds in the third game of a four-game series at Citi Field.DeGrom (2-3, 4.85 ERA) will be looking to avoid losing a career-high fourth straight start when he opposes the Reds' Anthony DeSclafani (1-1, 4.26 ERA) in a battle of right-handers.The Mets grinded out a surprising 4-3, 10-inning win Tuesday night, when Pete Alonso's sacrifice fly gave New York its first walk-off win of the season.The victory, which kept the Mets from falling below .500 for the first time this season, came on a night in which struggling fifth starter Jason Vargas carried a shutout into the sixth inning.However, the Mets still had to survive a blown save by fill-in closer Jeurys Familia, who was asked to get the last six outs by manager Mickey Callaway because closer Edwin Diaz was unavailable after throwing the previous three days.The Reds had two outs and nobody on in the ninth when they scored twice by drawing a walk and hitting three straight singles off Familia."It was a good comeback. It would have been a great one to win," Reds manager David Bell said afterward. "To come back right there, when you're almost out of it and battle back and give us a chance to win, we're happy about that. But it didn't work out." DeGrom hopes he's worked out whatever has been ailing him the last three weeks. The 30-year-old, who picked up where he left off in 2018 by throwing 13 shutout innings in winning his first two starts, has lost his last three outings, a span in which he's given up 14 runs in 13 innings. It is the second three-start losing streak for deGrom, who also lost three in a row from June 7 through June 19, 2016 and July 23 through Aug. 3, 2018.DeGrom battled strep throat before and after his start against the Atlanta Braves on April 14 and took a precautionary trip to the injured list on April 19, one day after his right elbow hurt following the resumption of his usual daily throwing program.DeGrom spent the minimum 10 days on the shelf and returned on April 26, when he took the loss after giving up five runs over four innings as the Mets fell to the Milwaukee Brewers, 10-2.DeGrom said he felt fine physically that day but lamented being unable to fix the mechanical issue that's compromised his location during his slump. He has walked eight and plunked two batters in his last three starts. DeGrom had just 46 walks and five hit batsmen in 217 innings last year."I just think I wasn't good," deGrom said afterward.
