Phillies welcome struggling Tigers for two-game set The Philadelphia Phillies are looking for their fourth consecutive victory when they host the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday night. The Phillies won the final three games of a four-game series against the Miami Marlins.Despite scoring 12 runs on Saturday, the Philadelphia offense has been mediocre of late, averaging just 3.8 runs and hitting a collective .228 over its last 12 games.Still, the Phillies have three players with at least 20 RBIs -- Rhys Hoskins (23), Maikel Franco (22) and Bryce Harper (20) -- before May 1 for the first time in franchise history."We haven't been at full strength and our lineup hasn't clicked the way we all know it can," manager Gabe Kapler said. "We got through April, or almost through April, and we've done a good job. But I think there's better baseball to play." The Phillies will hand the ball to right-hander Vince Velasquez, who has been a pleasant surprise with a 1-0 record and 1.99 ERA in four starts. He hasn't allowed more than two runs in any start, but has only lasted at least six innings once.In Velasquez's last start on Wednesday, he allowed three hits in five scoreless innings against the New York Mets. He struck out six and walked three.Since starter Zach Eflin went the distance on Sunday, the Phillies' first nine-inning complete game since Sept. 17, 2016, the bullpen will enter this series very well rested."It's huge. It really is," Kapler said of the bullpen. "It was a huge win for the series, but really a huge long-term win for the Phillies." The struggling Tigers will hand the ball to Tyson Ross, who's 1-3 with a 4.03 ERA.Ross, who has primarily been a reliever before this season, allowed seven hits and four runs in five innings in his last start, an 11-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday."I've got to do a better job and pitch deeper into the game after we had a doubleheader," Ross said. "I feel for them (bullpen). It's not easy, especially after a long day that we had." The Tigers have dropped four in a row and tied a Major League Baseball record by striking out 20 times in a 4-1 loss to the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. The 20 strikeouts were a microcosm of the entire season. Not making enough contact has been an ongoing issue all season."Disappointed is a good word," manager Ron Gardenhire said of the strikeouts. "But like I said, it's not like they're not trying. They're trying. We just didn't put the ball in play and they punched us out." There is good news for the Tigers, who have six players on the injured list. It looks as if shortstop Jordy Mercer will be activated in time for this game against the Phillies.Mercer, who has been on the injured list with a strained right quad, has been on a rehab assignment with Class A Advanced Lakeland.Detroit's Miguel Cabrera recently picked up his 2,700th career hit. He's hitting .283 with one homer and 10 RBIs this season.--Field Level Media
